A Ventura County raspberry producer has paid $8,000 to two harvesters to resolve charges of unfair labor practices
The California Agricultural Labor Relations Board said Marz Farms
agreed to pay the workers the lost wages and offer them their jobs back in a settlement with the board reached in March
The board enforces the Agricultural Labor Relations Act
which addresses collective bargaining rights for agricultural workers in California
The charges allege that the Camarillo grower retaliated against the workers because they reported concerns about waiting too long to have their harvested boxes examined
failure to receive credit for the harvested boxes and management personnel's alleged mistreatment of workers
according to a news release the board issued April 25
The business disputes there was any retaliation
He said the workers alleged they were owed back pay because they were not rehired for a number of months
"We negotiated a settlement to cover the back pay claimed
minus any wages paid by another employer," he said
Roy said the grower chose not to litigate the issue before the board for financial or other reasons
Marz did not admit to any violations of the labor relations act connected to the charges
State officials said Marz agreed to respect the rights of farmworkers to join together and speak up to seek improvements in working conditions without retaliation
Marz also agreed that the board's agents would visit the worksite to read a notice to agricultural workers about their rights under the act
The notice is due to be posted and mailed to current and former employees

A mountain lion led authorities on a chase around a suburban Camarillo neighborhood Wednesday afternoon
Authorities received a report of a mountain lion sighting at 8:42 a.m
in the backyard of a house in the 2400 block of Lomita Street
The animal was initially spotted sitting underneath a backyard playset
The site is on the north side of Daily Drive
Sheriff's officials requested Ventura County Animal Services monitor the mountain lion until California Department of Fish and Wildlife officials could arrive to capture the animal
An initial shot by wildlife officers around 1 p.m
The mountain lion was spotted moving along Ponderosa Drive and into a nearby neighborhood
ultimately stopping in front of some bushes near Pheasant Hill Road
The area is roughly a half mile from the home where the animal was first seen
A sheriff's helicopter assisted with the response
Helicopters from TV stations also buzzed overhead
to nearby residents and businesses to shelter in place near the intersection of Deerhunter Lane and Pheasant Hill Road
authorities shot the animal with a tranquilizer to sedate and capture it in the 2500 block of Pheasant Hill Road
The mountain lion was hauled from the scene in the back of a pickup by Fish and Wildlife personnel shortly before 2 p.m
who lives in the gated Rancho Tomás Citihomes development where the lion ended up
described the big cat's unexpected presence
He and his wife had been out walking their Australian shepherds earlier in the day
they had noticed a helicopter hovering in the general area of their residence
but figured it was looking for something at the nearby bank or Vons grocery
When they later returned home to the complex
Chifos' wife saw on the Nextdoor app that a mountain lion had been seen earlier in Camarillo
but the original sighting was far enough away they weren't worried
Then he saw a sheriff's deputy apparently trying to keep the mountain lion from wandering into the complex
"I see this cat with his head stuck between the rebar" in the gate
The lion appeared to pause for a moment and assess the situation
"He just jumped over the gate," Chifos said
Many people have kids and pets in the community
and he felt ready to protect them if need be
But a large number of deputies quickly rolled in
and the lion apparently hid in bushes until it was successfully tranquilized by Fish and Wildlife officials
it's a miracle no one got hurt," Chifos said
He gave a wave and called out thanks to a sheriff's sergeant standing nearby
"We’ll give it a health check up and tracking collar before releasing it back into the wild," Gonzalez said in an email
Gonzalez said it's not unusual for mountain lions to wander into a town or community
they move along a natural or manmade corridor
Healthy lions prefer to be in the wild where they have access to their main food source: mule deer
"Young lions can sometimes get lost looking for their own territory," Gonzalez wrote
"That’s probably what happened in this case."

The children's museum is still accepting donations and plans to open doors to its refurbished facility by the end of the year

A 22-year-old Oxnard man allegedly in violation of his parole
led authorities on a pursuit Monday morning that started at a Camarillo-area cemetery and ended 14 miles away with them in custody
deputies with the Ventura County Sheriff's Office received a request to assist in the arrest of a man at the Conejo Mountain Funeral Home
The cemetery is located outside of Camarillo just below the Conejo Grade
The 22-year-old reportedly entered a vehicle
after refusing to surrender to authorities

A vehicle pursuit ensued westbound down Pleasant Valley Road
and the driver was seen weaving into opposing lanes of traffic to avoid authorities
Deputies chased the vehicle deep into Oxnard where it eventually stopped on Escalon Drive
The three men exited fled from the vehicle at approximately 9:19 a.m.
Authorities chased the three suspects with two of the men jumping fences and entering nearby backyards
deputies took the trio into custody after a six-minute foot pursuit
The men were reportedly unarmed during the encounter
and there was no damage to property or injuries
The sheriff's office later said that the pursuit from Camarillo had its origins in an alleged home invasion-style burglary in Hollywood Beach home shortly before 2 a.m
Sheriff's deputies responding to that incident reportedly identified the 22-year-old man driving away and pursued his vehicle until the circumstances were deemed unsafe to continue
working with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s Adult Parole Unit
found their suspect at the Camarillo cemetery where the second pursuit kicked off
the 22-year-old parolee was arrested on suspicion of a host of felonies and misdemeanors
He is being held on $500,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court Wednesday
The 19-year-old faces charges for carrying a concealed knife
He is being held on $25,000 bail and is also expected to appear in court Wednesday
The 25-year-old was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest and conspiracy to commit a crime
He was released on $40,000 bail with a court date set for Jan

a professor of sociology and comparative studies in race and ethnicity (CSRE)
“I cannot think of anyone who was more universally respected and revered as a scholar
Albert Camarillo, a professor of history, founded the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity (CCSRE) in 1996
Camarillo also founded the Stanford Center for Chicano Research and the Inter-University Program for Latino Research
serving as the first director of both his endeavors
Camarillo has produced valuable research on the topics of race and ethnicity
establishing these areas of study as not just areas of student interest
but as “important and legitimate scholarship,” according to professor of history Gordon Chang
Camarillo lived in a segregated Mexican-American neighborhood in Compton
He said most of his childhood was “seeing but not understanding the legacies of racial discrimination and structural racism.” It was not until he took his first ethnic studies course at the University of California
Los Angeles (UCLA) that Camarillo began understanding and articulating his experiences
After graduating in 1970 with a degree in history
Camarillo continued his graduate education with a Ph.D at UCLA before coming to Stanford to teach in 1975 as an assistant professor of history
who worked closely with Camarillo over the past three decades
said when Camarillo first came to Stanford
the studies of race and ethnicity were not as well established as they are today
Camarillo became a pioneer on an institutional level
becoming a valuable mentor to colleagues and students through his work
“He always knew how to work with faculty and the administration to develop a step-by-step strategy to advance what we all saw as the common good,” Chang said.
Fellow professor Jiménez first met Camarillo while being recruited to teach at Stanford
Camarillo took Jiménez out to dinner with both of their partners.
Aron Ramirez ’19 studied with Camarillo during his last years of teaching
While working on his undergraduate thesis in history
Ramirez said Camarillo considered him “seriously as a thinker.”
“I never had a shortage of things to ask him
and he never made me feel like any of my questions were dumb,” Ramirez wrote in an email to The Daily
Camarillo has supported the larger Stanford community in social justice work
like advocating for Latino alumni across institutions

Camarillo’s latest book, “Compton in My Soul,” is a memoir of his life
race and ethnicity in the context of education.
He partly wrote the book to inspire his current students to pursue higher education
He had hoped that the book could fill in the generational space for his grandchildren
who are far removed from his immigrant experience

readers from immigrant families have reached out to him
sharing how his writing resonated with them
“There are some universal things in there [the book] about growing up as an ethnic person in America,” Camarillo said
“You don’t even know what you’re dealing with
On a larger scale, Camarillo hopes his account can “open people’s eyes to things that we take for granted but are under assault right now” in the context of recent political policies laid out by the Trump administration
Despite current challenges in racial equality
Camarillo is hopeful about the open doors for the younger generation.
“The beauty of people is to break historical barriers and understand themselves across ethnic
racial and other kinds of division,” Camarillo said
he hopes to unshackle “the America we had hoped to build.”

A 40-year-old Oxnard man died in a crash on northbound Highway 101 in Camarillo early Tuesday
and the driver of a second vehicle who fled on foot hadn't been found
The accident was reported shortly before 1 a.m
according to the California Highway Patrol
A black 2007 Lexus IS 250 had been traveling northbound at high speed
when it made an "unsafe" turning movement to the right and hit a concrete wall
a gray 2010 Ford Mustang traveling northbound hit the disabled Lexus
The Mustang then struck the guardrail in the center divider
The Lexus driver was taken by ambulance to Ventura County Medical Center
His name was not released pending notification of family
The driver of the Mustang left the scene on foot and hadn't been found as of 9:30 a.m
The CHP's log indicates authorities checked with local hospitals in search of walk-in patients
CHP investigators don't yet know whether drugs or alcohol were a factor
The incident closed northbound lanes for hours
The freeway was fully reopened around 9 a.m
Anyone who saw the crash or has information is asked to call the CHP's Ventura office at 805-662-2640
Parachute canopies are about to become a regular sight over the west side of Oxnard
iSkydiving has served recreational skydivers out of the Camarillo Airport
dropping customers off in tandems with instructors over a landing zone in Somis
But after a month of test jumps that began in February
the company is shifting the bulk of take off and touchdown operations to the Oxnard Airport
said the move allows more efficient flights and gives customers better ocean views on their five- to seven-minute fall toward the earth
"When you're 2 miles up and the shore is a mile away
it feels like you're right over it," Kurtz said
Kurtz said that parachuting back to the airport makes it easier for family and friends to watch a jump and allows for the company to fit more flights into a day at more competitive rates
The switch to the new digs was not without a little difficulty
a spokesperson for the county airports department
said the skydiving company had to change its flight pattern and relocate its landing zone to the south side of the airport after noise concerns during the test period
"We understand our stakeholders are not just pilots and businesses
It also includes the community," Jauregui said
The county airports department launched its Fly Friendly Ventura County program in 2022
providing pilots with alternate flight patterns out of the Camarillo and Oxnard airports in an effort to minimize air traffic and noise over surrounding residential neighborhoods
"We really want to be good neighbors," Kurtz said
iSkydive is going full time at the Oxnard Airport
operating six days a week with jumps every 30-45 minutes from 8 a.m
the company will shift back to its former route between the Camarillo Airport and Somis
Standard prices for a tandem jump with iSkydiving out of the Oxnard Airport start at $229. The company has 12 locations across the U.S., including a second California location in San Diego. More information is available at iskydive.com/losangeles

the longest-serving city council member in Camarillo's history
died Tuesday in a crash while on his way to Nevada and his wife was taken to the hospital
a Camarillo city councilman who served with Morgan on the council for 22 years
"Mike was a larger-than-life person," Kildee said
"He had the best interests of Camarillo at heart
and he was very passionate about Camarillo."
Morgan was elected to the Camarillo City Council in 1980 and reelected nine more times
helping to lead the city through most of four decades
He was also served as mayor multiple times throughout his time on the council
Morgan was unseated from the Camarillo City Council in 2018
in an election that make it much harder to break his record for longevity
since voters also approved a measure limiting council members to no more than three consecutive four-year terms
The only interruption in his 38 years of council service came when he couldn't run for council and county supervisor at the same time in 1996; he won back his council seat six months later in a special election
moved to Camarillo as a teenager and graduated from Camarillo High School
He was a probation officer with the County of Ventura and later with the federal government before retiring from that job in 1998
He helped pass a ballot measure in 1981 that limited residential development
but his tenure saw him lead Camarillo through a period of substantial growth in its economy and population
as did the city's modern public library and its main park
Morgan helped oversee the renovation and revitalization of Old Town Camarillo
and he helped the city recover financially when risky investments its treasurer made in the 1980s turned bad
"Mike and some of the other council members of that time had a vision in terms of where they wanted the city to go," said Camarillo Mayor Tony Trembley
whose first two years on the City Council overlapped with Morgan's last two
"I think we have an excellent City Council now
but we stand on the shoulders of Mike and others."
Morgan was an active philanthropist and volunteer
He held leadership roles in the local Rotary and Lions clubs
and he was also a board member with Camarillo Fiesta
Morgan stayed active in the community and the nonprofit world after leaving the City Council
He was also an active member of Padre Serra Parish
"Mike was a big part of the fabric of our community here
and he's really going to be missed," Kildee said
"We're all in a state of shock over what happened
You lose a community member of that magnitude
Kildee said there will be a public memorial of some kind for Morgan
but the city has not made any plans for one yet

Sheriff’s Capt. Cyrus Zadeh said a homeowner in the 2400 block of Lomita Street called the dispatch center shortly before 9 a.m. to report that a mountain lion was in their backyard. Zadeh said deputies were dispatched to the home, where they spotted the mountain lion in the backyard resting under a playground set.
The deputies kept an eye on the cougar as they waited for Ventura County Animal Services, who took over the incident and requested assistance from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Zadeh said it was shortly before 1 p.m. when deputies were called to assist after a fish and game warden tried to tranquilize the big cat. The officer had fired a dart — but missed. And the wildcat took to its heels.

A 500- to 600-pound bear has moved into the crawl space of a Pasadena fire victim’s home and wreaked havoc in the neighborhood
“It did run through residential and business areas and jumped on the rooftops,” Zadeh said
He said the Sheriff’s Department provided traffic control while animal services and fish and game officers tracked the mountain lion for at least an hour
Zadeh said the cat eventually came to rest in the 2500 block of Pheasant Hill Road
and Zadeh said it would likely be returned to the wild
mountain lions have managed to make their way into Camarillo’s neighborhoods before
Two years ago in February, a mountain lion was spotted at Pleasant Valley and Pancho roads. The cat was caught on a resident’s home surveillance camera. That incident, however, did not require the assistance of fish and game wardens.
Zadeh said it was unclear if Wednesday’s mountain lion is the same as the one from two years ago or if the animal had a tracker.

Opponents of a planned Costco Wholesale warehouse store and gas station in Camarillo are appealing a county judge's January rejection of their lawsuit against the project
Ventura County Superior Court Judge Mark Borrell denied arguments by the grassroots Ventura County Citizens Against Mega Gas that Camarillo didn't do enough environmental analysis of the proposed Costco
15 decision that the city had met state requirements when it found the additions Costco proposed to an earlier development plan were not significant enough to trigger a new environmental impact report
The citizen's group — a coalition of environmentalists
community members and business owners — filed an appeal in March in California's 2nd District Court of Appeal
"The project approval process had issues," said Tal Finney
one of the attorneys brought on to file the appeal
with its fuel station and expanded parking
would bring substantial changes from the project covered by the city's original environmental review
"(An environmental impact report) was not done and should have been done," Finney said
The 20-acre parcel is on West Ventura Boulevard next to Home Depot
between Highway 101 and the Camarillo Airport

The Ventura resident is part of the Ventura Audubon society and drives by the property regularly
The citizens' group harbors concerns about the increased traffic and the implications of the planned gas station for air quality and local small businesses

Two deadly incidents Thursday — one in Camarillo and a stabbing earlier outside Oxnard — were the work of the same individual
The complex case involved crime scenes miles apart
Two people were killed and two others injured
The fatal victims were identified Friday as 75-year-old Marilyn Gallagher and 33-year-old Ricardo Juarez
according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office
42-year-old Alvin Otis Johnson of Camarillo
was arrested Thursday night outside Gallagher’s residence after a search effort was launched in the wake of the earlier stabbing
On Thursday afternoon, shortly after 1 p.m., deputies responded to a stabbing near Rice Avenue and Channel Islands Boulevard
The site is in an agricultural area just east of Oxnard city limits
had been taken by ambulance to Ventura County Medical Center
He was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly before 2:40 p.m
The stabbing had been reported by multiple people at the time
launching a search that involved multiple sheriff’s divisions and a helicopter
The search continued until Johnson was later located at the Camarillo crime scene
Johnson and a 43-year-old woman had all been driving in the victim’s car before Johnson allegedly stabbed Juarez inside the vehicle
Johnson then drove away alone in the victim’s vehicle
The woman identified Johnson as the suspect to sheriff’s investigators
in the 3400 block of Huerta Court in Camarillo
The sheriff’s office is contracted to provide police services in the city
The 911 call came from inside the residence concerning an assault with a deadly weapon
a 47-year-old man showed up at the Camarillo police station on Las Posas Road
reporting an assault at the Huerta Court residence
The man had been pistol-whipped by the suspect at the home before heading to the police station
Deputies found Gallagher inside the house with severe head trauma
They performed life-saving measures at the scene
Her wounds were initially thought to be from gunfire
it still wasn’t clear whether she had been shot
Gallagher was taken to Los Robles Regional Medical Center and later pronounced dead
Johnson was found in front of the residence holding a handgun
He was taken into custody without incident
The two victims who had been pistol-whipped weren’t seriously hurt
Johnson was an acquaintance of those in the home and had apparently been to the residence before
Neighbors in the area had been advised to shelter in place for a time due to the police activity
which included a large response on the ground and helicopters overhead
no evidence of the previous night’s activities was visible on the tree-lined residential street
People seen grieving on the lawn of the home
A neighbor described the area as a normally wonderful place where everyone takes care of each other
The motive for the crimes remained under investigation Friday
Witness descriptions at both scenes indicated the suspect was possibly under the influence of drugs
Johnson was booked into the county’s main jail in Ventura
He had been arrested on suspicion of two counts of murder
false imprisonment by violence and firearms violations
Prosecutors hadn’t yet filed formal charges as of Saturday
An arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon in room 13 of Ventura County Superior Court
