First look inside pFriem Family Brewers Milwaukie taproom
Oregon City Brewing struck a deal to by the former Canby Municipal Library building in 2019
when the pandemic struck in 2020 they were on much more sure footing and the cost of construction skyrocketed
After pausing the deal and reappraising the price
the deal got back on track with the city agreeing to a deal that would make the building a community hub rather than counter offers that would see it becoming a call center or a retirement home
The next major delay in construction was in regard to food trucks
Originally the city of Canby only allowed food trucks on a temporary permitted basis
but after numerous requests and complaints the ordnance was re-evaluated to allow them in 2022
Oregon City Brewing’s building plans at the time called for a rooftop patio and no food
but they quickly threw those designs out in favor of a food truck pod model that would have a ground level beer garden for families
lot of the former Canby Library has now been carved up with 6,000 square feet designated for the heated outdoor food cart pod and a permanent roof with skylights covering ample seating options
The food cart pod area has seven food trucks: Adelina’s Mexican Food; Alani Mediterranean; Zula’s Tea & Coffee; Blessing Bites Fish & Chips; Church of Smoke BBQ; Poundtown Smashburgers; and Esan Thai.
The indoor taproom area features 51 drafts
45 of which will pour Oregon City Brewing’s own beers and house-made sodas
The German beer hall style layout features a concrete bar and over a dozen tables on one side
Although the building and design does not resemble a library
their are homages to it’s previous life with book-themed beer display boards and taster trays
and displays of found items like library cards and signs from some of the students who once were there
OC Brewing has also dedicated a section of their merchandise wall to be the ‘Canby Library Book Garden’ Featuring shelves of used books for purchase at discount prices
with all proceeds to benefit Friends of the Canby Library
So you can imagine how they felt when a driver crashed into their downtown Oregon City brewery breaking into their barrel room and exposing precious aging sour beer to elements
and making that corner of the building structurally unsound
Vohden and OC Brewing ended up having to dump around 40 barrels of beer
and a replenished supply of young beers aging in oak
will now have their own home at the new Canby Beer Library
Canby Library taproom is dedicated to the Oregon City barrel-aging program and makes for a natural division of barrels splitting the space
The funky and sour program will now have its own dedicated space
and there are plans to add stainless steel blending tanks and possibly oak foudres in the future
Coming off a stellar Great American Beer Festival showing
Oregon City Brewing will feature over a dozen award-winning beers on tap for the Grand Opening
They include: 2024 GABF Gold Medal winners Doc McLoughlin and My Cerise Amour; Beast of Burton; The Barrel of the Beast; Coming To Fruition: Cherry; Dark ‘Vator; It’s A Trapp!; Lilikoi No Ka `oi; OC Light; Ol’ Beauty; Pipe Dream; Stout Lager; and Temporary Stairs
this project has been funded in part by the Oregon Business Development Department and the State Historic Preservation Office’s Oregon Main Street Revitalization Grant
and the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department

In addition to the high school teams taking the floor
were a few Junior High and Club teams. From Disney Princesses to Justin Timberlake swag
all dance levels and artistic expressions had moments to share with an enthusiastic audience.
entries were divided into three groupings. During this part of the season
some teams use all or part of their Contemporary or Modern routines from earlier in the season and enter them into the Traditional category. Clackamas took the lead for 6A against three other teams: Sprague
and Barlow. Clackamas’ Traditional routine is one of those carryover routines from the Fall Contemporary category
This routine received the highest score of the day with an 83.17

Gresham took the floor again at Canby with a Jazz (6A) entry that received first place and rounded out all of the high school wins for the day.
The unofficial “dance party” win was crowned to the youngsters of the Regeneration Dance Team (with some help from the Forest Grove High School team)
How could they lose with all those amazing little dancers full of enthusiasm and excitement in the mix

New adventures await Jackson Doman once he finishes his senior year at Canby
Shortly after an early graduation in April
he will head off to Brazil for his two-year Mormon mission
he plans to get started on a college football career at Brigham Young
But as the 6-foot-5 Doman prepares to explore those new horizons
he is ending a chapter of his life this week in the OSAA/OnPoint Community Credit Union 5A wrestling championships at Veterans Memorial Coliseum
Coming off a sterling junior season that included a 45-0 record and a state title at 215 pounds
the top-seeded Doman is in position for an encore
advancing to the 215 semifinals with two pins
“It's most likely my last tournament,” Doman said
I've been wrestling ever since I can remember
I've been wrestling longer than I've been playing football
Doman was hopeful of doing both football and wrestling in college
“I think I'm good enough that I could wrestle in college,” he said
“I didn't try to do anything to get recruited towards wrestling
But I wouldn't be opposed if a coach reached out to me to wrestle and play football.”
Doman appears to be on a collision course to face Silverton senior Brash Henderson – last year's heavyweight champion and the No
Doman gutted out a 2-1 win over Henderson at a tournament in Canby on Dec
Henderson got an escape in the second round and Doman scored a reversal in the third round
“I feel like we both went out and didn't really do anything,” Doman said of the match
just seeing how the other person would wrestle
I think it'll be different for both of us.”
Doman was hopeful to meet Henderson in the Reser's Tournament of Champions on Jan
but Henderson was pinned by junior Walter Dahme of 6A Sherwood in the semifinals
Doman pinned Dahme in the final to repeat as Reser's champion
The win over Henderson was Doman's most difficult match of the season
He caught Henderson with a cradle and needed all of his strength and energy to ride him out
he gets that cradle locked up and it's game over,” Canby coach Brandon Harms said
“Brash was able to fight it off and not get to the near-fall criteria
Jackson came off the mat afterwards and said his forearms were numb
We probably won't hold a cradle a whole round.”
“There's not a position he can't get a cradle out of,” Harms said
“I'll be wrestling him and somehow end up cradled on my back
he's able to get that cradle when he's not necessarily in a conventional position to get there.”
Doman believes he is a more powerful wrestler this season
after making a conscious effort to gain weight
so I feel like that's one of my advantages,” Doman said
“And I've been working on overall quickness and speed
Doman and Henderson is among seven reigning state champions to advance to the 5A semifinals
The others are Crater sophomore Jeremiah Oliva (120)
Crater sophomore Aidan Godley (144) and Bend sophomore Leif Larwin (175)
which won the last of its nine team titles in 2017
“That's our goal,” Oliva said of the team title
and building back the reputation of Crater would be awesome
Oliva won both of his Friday matches by technical fall to improve his record to 39-1
He is unbeaten since dropping an 8-2 decision to junior Ryder Sprague of 6A West Linn in his second match of the season
“I'm just trying to prove a point that I'm one of the best in Oregon
Oliva said training against a wide variety of elite wrestlers in Crater's deep room has helped him meet the challenge of defending a state title
“It's pushed me to go harder because I know I have a target on my back.”
West Linn and reigning champion Newberg – teams that held down the top two spots in the last two 6A tournaments – lead the standings heading into Saturday
racked up 74.5 points to own a slight edge over the Tigers (72.5)
West Linn and Newberg each qualified nine entries in the quarterfinals
said his team needs contributions deep into the consolation rounds to overcome Newberg
which is going for a state-record 15th team title
“They have to over-perform to get this team title
I really believe in our team to get the win.”
Doces recorded a win and technical fall Friday to improve his record to 27-4
The champion at 126 as a sophomore and 138 as a junior
he is the only 6A wrestler going for a third title
“You've just got to enjoy it that people come out hard after that first whistle,” Doces said
“This year I'm just trying to enjoy it and take it in
I had some setbacks this year – it's more personal – and I'm just trying to get back from that.”
Five other wrestlers kept their repeat title bids alive by advancing to the quarterfinals: Roseburg junior Drew Dawson (113)
Lake Oswego senior Lusiano Lopez (215) and Nelson senior Dominic Macon (285)
lost in the first round by injury default to Forest Grove senior Preston Vandehey
who won the title at 138 as a sophomore but missed the second half of his junior season after having knee surgery
“I'm just kind of grateful to be wrestling,” Hull said
It's my senior year and I'm just kind of letting it fly
My goal was to be a three-time state champion
his only loss coming against an Idaho wrestler
Dallas senior Polly Olliff and North Medford junior Skyler Hall stayed on course to become three-time state champions
Nine champions from last year earned their way into the semifinals in Olliff
Cleveland senior Isabel Herring (155) and Thurston junior Izabella Castlebery (190)
lost 2-1 in the quarterfinals to David Douglas sophomore Brooklyn Jackson
Olliff believes she has corrected her course after a disappointing 6-3 loss on Jan
the same wrestler who handed Olliff her only defeat last season
and it showed me kind of their game plan,” Olliff said
“It helped me develop better as a wrestler
Olliff has beaten Russell three times this season – twice before the loss and 9-0 in the district tournament
Olliff said she was “better prepared” at district
and I was ready to redeem myself,” Olliff said
Olliff and Russell could meet again in the state final
The fifth-seeded Russell recorded two pins Friday to earn a spot in the opposite semifinal against the No
“I know that she will be in the finals,” Olliff said of Russell
North Medford's Hall sisters – Skyler and Sadie – moved closer to duplicating their titles
but might have to go through undefeated opponents in the finals to do it
Skyler is seeded second to Newberg sophomore Paisley Conway (28-0)
Sadie is on the opposite side of the bracket from Wells' Johnson (27-0)
Mountainside's Morris improved her record to 50-0 with two easy wins
she continues to dominate despite moving up two weight classes
“I feel good about my progress,” Morris said
Morris has not been seriously threatened this season
but I'm here to take what's mine,” Morris said
It feels like a lot of people are out to get me
But I want to be in the bracket with all the tough girls
Redmond (55) and reigning champion Thurston (52.5) top the standings heading into Saturday
Dallas and Redmond have the most semifinalists with five and four
CANBY – Culture and legacy seep through the Canby Lancers wrestling program
It’s evident when you look at the back wall of the wrestling room
which displays the program’s eight state championships
The culture’s foundation was laid decades ago by longtime coach Gerry Gingles
so it’s fitting that the Lancers broke their 16-year state tournament drought this year in his honor
and that’s what I keep telling the kids,” Canby wrestling coach Gary Stoks said
“Look at the wall and look at all he accomplished
It’s just trying to keep our tradition alive and staying to the form of that tradition.”
As a former wrestler for the Lancers himself
Stoks knows all about the program’s tradition
who are also all former wrestlers for Canby
“I love the coaching group I’ve got,” Stoks said
A unique aspect of the coaching staff is that three of the assistants – Deslauriers
Kontz and Baer – were wrestlers on the 2008 squad that was the last team to advance to the state tournament
“That’s what makes it nice,” Stoks added
It helps when they hear it from others besides me saying ‘This is the way it’s done; this is how you have to do it.’ Now they hear it from the other coaches with the same verbiage.”
That 2008 team defeated Madelia/Truman and New York Mills to advance to the state championship bout
where the Lancers came up short against Jackson County Central
For this year’s team to advance to the state tournament
it had to first wrestle its way through the gauntlet also known as Section 5A
“You knew it was going to be a grind,” Stoks said
Canby earned a 40-24 win over Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City on Thursday
The Lancers then defeated Paynesville Area 43-17 in the Final Four on Feb
15 to set up the section championship dual against rival Minneota
with Ryan Meagher earning the Vikings three points in an ultimate tiebreaker over Jordan DePestel
Heading into the section championship’s heavyweight bout
with Meagher and DePestel once again pitted against each other with a state berth on the line
DePestel earned the decisive points to help send the Lancers back to the state tournament
It was a moment of breakthrough for a program that has come up just short many times in recent memory
“We always seem to get there,” he said
“It’s just a matter of getting the kids mentally ready for it
we had a lot of sickness going around at the same time
you have to be ready when it’s time to go and not go by when we’re healthy.”
Stoks agreed that last year’s loss in the section championship served as fuel for the team this time around
‘I don’t care how good teams are
Culture is set through building on repeated success
but it is the upperclassmen that lead the way and help set the tone for how successful the team will be each year
“I have excellent captains this year,” Stoks said
“They’re pushing the younger kids and they’re pushing each other
Our captains made a big turnaround this year
and everybody’s on board with it.”
The team’s seven seniors are Sam Drietz
Seniors tallied 19 of the team’s 33 points in the section championship win over Minneota
“It’s a special group of seniors,” Stoks said
but this one just seems a little different where they have their goals set and it’s big goals
That makes you feel good as a coach that they’re talking like that to all the kids.”
Stoks added that one of the things he appreciates most about the seniors is the approach they bring to the mat every day
“They all show a little part of what it’s going to take to get it done,” he added
“They’ve been right there the last couple years
It’s a special group because they talk it
they don’t get on them in a mean way but they’re saying ‘if we want to do this
Stoks said he knew the group had a chance at a special season with the way the guys were competing in some of the bigger tournaments during the season
Guzman placed third at 114 pounds and Sam Drietz placed second at 160 pounds
“It’s been really cool seeing these kids improve and get better,” Stoks said
That’s been one of the things for me; it’s more about taking care of the kids
Seeing that they’re bonding together is huge and that’s when they become a really good team
which is what I think we’re heading towards.”
5 seed in this weekend’s Class A field
and will open the state tournament against No
2-seeded Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial Area from Section 2A
and random draws LeSueur-Henderson from Section 4A
West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville from Section 6A and United North Central (a Menahga and Sebeka co-op) from Section 8A
Thursday morning’s quarterfinal dual is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m

CANBY — After an offensive lull late in the first half
the Minneota boys basketball team regained its footing out of the break to pick up a road win over Canby on Tuesday night
Despite leading by just 2 points at halftime
the Vikings exploded coming out of the locker room to lead by as many as 20 points before claiming an 84-71 win
Minneota head coach Chad Johnston attributed his team’s shift after halftime to its ability to force turnovers and improved shot selection
Minneota finished the game with a 15-24 advantage in the turnover battle
with Lucas Rybinski accounting for seven of his team’s 24 steals and Hunter Carstensen adding another four
“I think we felt a little bit in that first half where we hit some early shots
and then we started taking some more shots way too early in the offense,” Johnston said
“We slowed down our scoring and they just slowly worked their way back in
Our emphasis at halftime was that we started the game fast
we need to start the second half fast.”
Despite first-half shooting struggles sending Minneota into the locker room with a deflated lead
the Vikings started the second half reinvigorated
Tate Peterson quickly came up with a steal and scored to bring Minneota’s lead back to two possessions and Rybinski followed up with an and-1 layup to keep the momentum flowing
While Rybinski couldn’t get the free throw to go down
the Vikings grabbed the offensive rebound and dished out to Adam Dalager at the top of the key for 3
bringing Minneota’s lead back to double digits at 43-23
The Vikings went on to score 12 unanswered points to start the half before Jack Abrahamson ended the Canby drought with a layup off the glass
Dalager responded with a 3 on the other end to give Minneota its largest lead of the game at the time
Lincoln Jerzak finished the night as the game’s leading scorer
Leo Hennen and Rybinski each also added 18 points
with Hennen shooting 7 of 13 from the field and 4 of 9 from 3
and Rybinski shooting 7 of 16 from the field
The game was the final home game for Canby’s two seniors
The two finished as some of the game’s leading scorers
with Anderson accounting for a team-high 16 points and Jack Abrahamson’s 15 falling just shy of Jace Rangaard’s 15 and just ahead of Will Abrahamson’s 13
“We’re going to miss them next year
They’re the foundation of what we want to do and what Canby basketball is all about,” Canby head coach Ryan Lalim said of his seniors
“They’ve been great seniors so far for us
and I’m hoping when they come back in five years
Jack Abrahamson’s nine rebounds were also a team-high while Anderson’s seven were third on the team behind Rangaard’s eight
Minneota dominated the glass to the tune of a 45-34 margin
The offensive glass in particular was a strong suit for the Vikings
Hennen and Rybinski led the effort for Minneota with nine rebounds each
including six offensive rebounds for Rybinski
Carstensen also grabbed four offensive and seven total rebounds
the Lancers found a rhythm late in the first half to make a game of things heading into the break
Anderson knocked down a putback layup to bring the Lancers back within single digits with four minutes to play
and Owen Peterson was fouled on a made 3-pointer and knocked down the free throw to bring the Lancers within 5
Anderson went on to lead the Lancers in scoring with 16 points while Jace Rangaard and Will and Jack Abrahamson finished with 15
The Canby run continued as Jack Abrahamson hit a pair of free throws to make it a one-possession game
A travel on the other end of the floor gave Canby the ball back with the chance to tie or go ahead
but they couldn’t knock down the shot
Anderson knocked down a pair of free throws in the half’s final seconds to cut Canby’s deficit to 35-32 at halftime
“When you go to the free throw line as much as we did
We just didn’t quit,” Lalim said of his team’s late-half surge
If we just take away those first couple minutes of each half
Long-range shooting was streaky for both teams
with Minneota shooting 9 of 33 from beyond the arc and Canby shooting 7 of 22
Minneota also shot 54% from the free-throw line
where Canby held a stark advantage at 73% on 24 of 33 shooting
Rybinski had the hot hand for Minneota in the game’s opening minutes
knocking down a 3-pointer and grabbing a steal to set up his own layup on the first two Vikings possessions
Hennen converted a 3-pointer and Peterson hit a layup to give Minneota a 10-1 lead through two minutes
Hennen kept the ball rolling with another 3-pointer to cap off Minneota’s 15-1 run through the game’s first three-and-a-half minutes
Canby didn’t get its first field goal until more than five minutes in
Minneota’s lead teetered between 15 and 11 points until Canby started to get in the swing of things with 10 minutes left in the half
Creed Stassen hit a bucket with 10 minutes remaining in the second half to help Minneota bring its lead past the 20-point mark
trimming Minneota’s lead back to 10 points with under six minutes remaining
Rybinski grabbed a rebound and tapped it back into the basket before he landed to bring the Vikings’ lead back to 12 points and the Lancers never got back within single digits
“It’s a combination of a lot of things
and we’ve had it unfortunately too many times this year where we hit spells where shots just don’t want to go in for us,” Johnston said of Canby’s ability to get back into the game
sometimes they’re not the best choice of shots
but [Canby] had a couple big 3s and… it seemed like every time we maybe got something
all of a sudden they’d hit a big 3 that would keep them close.”
Minneota improves to 11-14 with the win and will wrap up its regular season on the road when it takes on Luverne (15-7) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m
Johnston noted that Luverne’s ability to apply pressure creates challenges for how the Vikings play
but said that he hopes that if his team can do the little things right
Canby falls to 1-22 with the loss and will aim to stage a major upset when it goes on the road to face No

Russell-Tyler-Ruthton's Colten Thomsen makes a field goal inside the lane during the first half against Canby Monday night in Tracy
Thomsen led all scorers with 25 points in the Knights 87-25 win
TYLER — The Russell-Tyler-Ruthton boys basketball team controlled all aspects of the game from tip off powered behind Colten Thomsen’s 25 points
The Knights only allowed 10 points in the second half
and the Lancers remain looking for their first win of the season
we want to set the tone on the defensive side
That’s our focus and our goal game in and game out,” RTR head coach Daren Gravley said
“I thought we did a good job of that
I liked the pace of play we had — We try to play a little faster and get out in transition.”
Chase Christianson followed with 13 points and Luke Schreurs added 11
Both Schreurs and Thomsen hit a trio of 3-pointers
Casey Hoiland finished with a team-high 11 points behind a pair of 3s
jump started by a pair of 3-pointers from Schreurs to get the night started
The Knights collected several steals and fast break layups to also set the tone on the defensive side of things early on
and they never lost sight of their double-digit advantage at any point once obtained
“The guys did a good job of getting stops
getting rebounds and then getting out in transition
we were able to knock some threes down early,” Gravley said
“We just grew with confidence from there
and we were able to just keep it going.”
The Lancers have had a troubling start to the season
and four games have been decided by 40 or more points
We played very young tonight,” Canby head coach Ryan Lalim said
The Knights on the other hand are on a good stride
and have only dropped two games at their season opener to No
2 Dawson-Boyd and fell by 10 points to an undefeated Hills-Beaver Creek team on Friday
Canby’s Hoiland hit a jumper and got a steal afterwards in an attempt to start some Lancer spark
12 of them came from four 3-pointers with another two from Juhl Drake
Thomsen and Christianson sank back-to-back 3-pointers to put the Knights up 24-4 six minutes into the game
and one more 3 from Tyler Wichmann forced Canby to call a timeout
“Our motto this year is to get 1% better every day,” Lalim said
we go to games and we get 1% better every day.”
RTR built up to a 30-point advantage at 36-6 after Gavin Schreurs cut inside the lane to receive the inbound pass and went up for a reverse layup
“Don’t let bad habits creep in
and just continue to play hard and have fun,” Gravley said regarding how the team stayed ahead
“We were able to get pretty deep into our bench tonight
and everybody got out and was able to contribute
Thomsen and Christianson were big threats on both ends of the court
to which the Lancers struggled to find an answer to
They both stand at 6-foot-2 and 6-foot-5 respectively
Thomsen grabbed a handful of steals and converted them to fast break layups on a few occasions
and Christianson’s aggressiveness in grabbing offensive boards continued to give RTR second chance points
“Colten works hard on the defensive and offensive end
A lot of points he got tonight were just hustle points — Sprinting the floor without the ball
and had a couple steals,” Gravley said
“He got in the passing lane really well and anticipated and was able to finish at the rim
Gavin Schreurs got in on the defensive action with a steal and broke away for a layup to eclipse an RTR 40-point lead
Canby got into double digits after Hoiland found himself open at the left wing for a 3 to move the score to 53-11
Thomsen went on a 7-0 just himself with a 3-pointer and back-to-back steals and layups
The second half wasn’t any different
as the Knights outshot the Lancers 23-10 throughout it
Christianson opened up the half with another 3-pointer and RTR continued to cruise through the rest of the game with the running clock
Gravley gave some reserve players an opportunity to see the court by putting them into the game midway through the last half
including Tyler Dagel who finished with 10 points
“I also wanted to give Tyler Dagel some credit for coming off the bench,” Gravley said
and we just got to be consistent with our efforts.”
Canby (0-10) has a quick turnaround and will look to get its first win tonight when it travels to take on Minneota (3-6) at 7:30 p.m
The Vikings have dropped five consecutive games
today on the road and tomorrow on the road,” Lalim said
but it will be a whole new team tomorrow.”
RTR (6-2) will next face a strong Murray County Central (7-2) team in Slayton on Thursday slated for 7:30 p.m
“We’re going to have to prepare
They’re going to be a little bigger team with more size
and they’re going to be a lot deeper team,” Gravley said
and if we can knock shots down and get some stops
The driver was able to exit the truck safely and return to his group without suffering any injuries
The vehicle has now settled in approximately 30 feet of water
and recovery efforts are being coordinated
Preliminary investigations suggest that the ice at the location of the incident had been compromised due to the recent warm weather
The area where the vehicle fell through has been clearly marked with traffic cones to alert the public
Authorities remind everyone that no ice is ever completely safe and encourage extreme caution when venturing onto ice-covered lakes
