to the Carlstadt Council in 2020 and elected to full terms in 2021 and last November Assemblymen Clinton Calabrese (D-Cliffside Park) and Gary Schaer (D-Passaic City) represent the 36th district The What started as an ordinary summer day for Pete and Jackie Miragliotta quickly spiraled into a nightmare when they found out their daughter, Michele Sabia, had been killed in a murder-suicide shot her on the front lawn of their Union Avenue home in Carlstadt on July 6 He barricaded himself inside the house while their three children hid in neighbors' homes But their tragedy turned into resilience and a dedication to help others recognize the signs of domestic violence while providing help for people affected by it Pete Miragliotta has dedicated a huge portion of his time to working with Center for Hope & Safety in Bergen County He first became acquainted with the center and its work when he donated Sabia's clothes and then offered pro bono services as a consultant He has served as the president and vice president of the board and is chair of the golf and governance committees He has also run several wine tastings to help raise money for the center Miragliotta even turned to writing a memoir to help process his feelings surrounding Sabia's death He said he was inspired after reading a book written by Sheryl Sandberg about the sudden death of her husband: "Option B: Facing Adversity Building Resilience and Finding Joy." He said Sandberg wrote about the challenges she faced with two young children to raise and the adjustments that had to be made He said it was then that he thought he should begin writing everything down Miragliotta didn't know if there was enough to fill an entire book but he continued to receive encouragement from Jackie and other people His therapist also thought it was a good idea "So I just started writing," Miragliotta said "I sat down at my computer and started writing with no particular sense of order at all The manuscript is currently with an editor Miragliotta began writing in April 2021 and plans to use the title "It's Like Trying to Eat Soup With a Flat Spoon." He said it was a saying that his daughter and some of her friends in school had tried to make popular and though it didn't stick in popular vernacular saying it starts with Sabia's killing and his getting a call from his sister about something happening at the house The book also speaks about what it was like when the children went back to school that September and the adjustments they all faced He said there were times he would be crying as he wrote it's been cathartic to get it down on paper and I hope it's worthy of people reading it and that they might learn something from it," Miragliotta said he goes into a discussion about domestic violence and how much he and Jackie had misunderstood "because Michele wasn't anyone that you would ever think of being a victim of domestic abuse." He said Sabia was the primary breadwinner in the family Miragliotta said his son-in-law had lifelong depression and his daughter was "sort of anchored to him" because Scott Sabia feared what might happen to him if she left "She felt a great sense of responsibility for taking care of him and she never really felt like she did enough," Miragliotta said He noted that those feelings were brought up when he watched the Netflix docuseries about Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie Petito went missing in 2021 while on a cross-country van trip with Laundrie Petito placed blame on herself for Laundrie's abuse and Miragliotta said that when looked at objectively "But you know she's not dealing with it that way," he said "What we didn't know about domestic abuse when [Michele's killing] happened would probably fill volumes And we've certainly learned more since then." He said that when most people think of domestic abuse He said he never saw signs of physical abuse but knew Scott Sabia would lose his temper and break things in the house Miragliotta said Sabia felt it was "her duty as a Christian woman to stick with" her husband and provide as much support as she could "I think the only [thing] that would have driven her away from him was if she felt that his behavior was harmful to the children," Miragliotta said And although he and Jackie don't know what led Scott Sabia to kill their daughter and then himself he said they have a "strong sense" she may have decided that what was happening was too harmful for their three children and it was time for them to go their separate ways Michele Sabia and the kids came to live with them Miragliotta said that when he spoke to her during that time "I felt like dirt for even suggesting that we were just getting coffee in the kitchen and she just said she had something to tell me," Miragliotta said "She and the kids were moving back that day." He said he was "floored" by her decision and that Sabia told him she had prayed and read her Bible and "felt that she did not have the right to not be supporting him anymore." Miragliotta said he can't remember if he meant this or was just trying to get her attention but he told his daughter that some women who went back to relationships like hers and Scott Sabia's ended up dead Miragliotta and his wife were responsible for caring for their grandchildren but they're on their way to becoming empty-nesters again Their oldest grandson lives in Florida and works as an electrician their middle grandson is a student at Bergen Community College and their granddaughter just started at the University of Tampa He said her chapter is called "I'll Look for You in the Waves" and talks about her memories of hunting for sand dollars with Sabia at the beach Center for Hope & Safety is facing some difficulties since it lost federal funding for its legal program But CEO Julye Myner said the center is grateful to the community "We've had eight years of incredible impact with our legal services and we went to people who helped us develop seeing how we've extended that and the difference that it made," Myner said we were able to raise significant funding to reduce our reliance on federal dollars Myner said the funding loss was not due to the Department of Government Efficiency's cuts in federal funding but because grant funding was opened up to other organizations creating more competition for the limited funds "What we learned quickly is that our community really wanted to invest in those legal services," Myner said "They know its impact and put us in a much better place." Myner said the center is grateful to the community for the donations and support because they continue to allow the center to provide lifesaving services Miragliotta said both men and women use the center's services but they tend to have more financial resources Women are less likely to have stable finances while escaping dangerous situations "They really start their lives all over again," Miragliotta said that takes an awful lot of guts and courage to pull away from a situation like that and start all over again A nurse charged with the care of a Morris County man with muscular dystrophy and autism has been sentenced to 90 days in jail after the 19-year-old’s death on a school bus will surrender his nursing license after his guilty plea to charges of endangering another person and neglect of a disabled person the Morris County Prosecutor's Office said Monday handed down Friday by state Superior Court Judge Ralph Amirata The charges followed the 2023 death of Matthew Rossi of East Hanover who died after his airway was obstructed with mucus during a bus ride home from school said a lawsuit filed by his family against Rivera and the bus company Rossi was in good health when he headed off to school the morning of Feb But he suffered respiratory distress on his ride home that afternoon that authorities said was not adequately addressed by his nurse “Rivera was legally responsible for the care of Matthew and neglected to perform certain acts necessary for the victim’s care which created a substantial risk of serious bodily injury,” said the joint press release from the Prosecutor’s Office and the East Hanover Police Department Police and emergency personnel were called to Rossi’s home “on a report of an unconscious male,” who had “just arrived home on the bus from his school EMS personnel and East Hanover Police officers attempted CPR and other lifesaving intervention The victim was subsequently pronounced deceased,” the statement reads Up to 45 days of Rivera's sentence may be served as part of the Morris County Sheriff’s Labor Assistance Program; he was ordered to have no contact with the Rossi family More: School bus safety bill focused on special education students clears NJ Senate There has been a heightened focus on improving transportation safety for students with disabilities in the wake of Rossi's death and other recent tragedies on New Jersey school buses The state has introduced a new training program for school bus drivers and aides and proposals in the state Legislature seek further reforms Assembly bill A-5142, currently under review by the chamber's Education Committee, would require the installation of video cameras and GPS units on buses and would make it mandatory for staff to call 911 during an emergency. And now there’s a new restaurant elevating the New Jersey hot pot experience to a new, futuristic level. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lauren Musni (@laurengisellemusni) the couple wanted to bring a new hot pot concept to New Jersey “Revolving hot pot is very popular in China but there isn’t really anything like that here.” Yomi Zeng told NJ Advance Media “There are dozens of ingredients for hot pot and people often don’t know what they are people can see what it is and then choose what they like.” Thinly sliced meat at Meet Hot Pot & Cajun Seafood in Carlstadt At Meet Hot Pot & Cajun Seafood, guests seated at tables next to the belt may simply grab the hot pot ingredients themselves. The novel concept is similar to conveyor belt sushi, which is also rising in popularity in New Jersey tofu and much travel through the restaurant on the conveyor belt in bowls and plates covered in plastic wrap which has to be ordered and delivered to the table by the wait staff New seafood is plated every 30 minutes and all other ingredients every two hours All the plates are added up and calculated at the end The process of watching the conveyor belt and grabbing ingredients without the hassle of ordering was certainly entertaining it was tedious waiting for plates to come back around if I missed them There are also tables that aren’t next to the conveyor belt — these guests just order everything off the menu and have it brought to them like at a typical hot pot restaurant items can still be ordered if guests don’t feel like waiting for the ingredients they want to come back around Dipping sauces at Meet Hot Pot & Cajun Seafood in Carlstadt The broth for the hot pot comes in six flavors — original The original was light and savory while the tomato was rich and slightly tangy — both serving as a perfect base for all the fresh ingredients starting at $6 each or share a big pot in the middle with two different broths ($16) or three ($21) Each customer is also given six different dipping sauces The hot pot itself was excellent with tender meat The sauces given also gave everything an extra layer of flavor My favorites were the nutty sesame sauce and the smoky dry cumin spice seasoning While the conveyor belt makes for a fun dining experience The plates on the belt are for one person only I grabbed two vegetables and a plate of noodles from the belt ordered two plates of meat and had two broths and it didn’t feel like I got all that much food An all-you-can-eat price model would be more effective here Big sharing hot pot at Meet Hot Pot & Cajun Seafood in Carlstadt While it’s not an elite hot pot restaurant (I still prefer Garden Shabu in Little Ferry) Meet Hot Pot & Cajun Seafood’s conveyor belt makes it one of the most unique hot pot restaurants in the state It is exciting to see new hot pot methods coming here Please subscribe now and support the local journalism YOU rely on and trust Lauren Musni may be reached at lmusni@njadvancemedia.com. surrounding industrial buildings date to the 1960s and 1970s “There are currently over 30 million square feet of active requirements in the market and over half of the industrial product under an intriguing place to call home Carlstadt was formed as a village within the Lodi Township But the origin of town's name name isn't as easy to discern Most believe the name is a tribute to Dr a leader of the early group which established Carlstadt in Lodi township was comprised of a group of German immigrants living in New York who fled to America seeking political liberty and craving city of Karlovac in Croatia which was known as “Carlstadt” in Germany The Borough of Carlstadt was declared an independent entity on June 27 1894 during a period in New Jersey sometimes referred to as
