The University is currently operating under normal conditions Graduate student Marissa Carmi is co-president of the First Nations Graduate Circle which supports and advocates for American Indian graduate and professional students on campus Graduate student Marissa Carmi is a citizen of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin — and as an American Indian — she’s brought her life experiences and perspective to serve graduate and professional students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Before pursuing graduate school, Carmi worked for theAdministration for Native Americans, part of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, where she saw empowerment in action among American Indians around the country. Her doctoral work in theDepartment of American Studiesis inspired by her time with ANA and focuses on Oneida intellectual history and efforts to build a sustainable Oneida future “I was so fascinated by all of the different things that Native organizations were doing with their federal awards,” Carmi said communities are designing programs to secure their sovereignty and their futures,” she said She’s brought that sense of advocacy and belonging to Carolina as co-president of theFirst Nations Graduate Circle advocacy events and building a sense of community Its membership — around half a dozen people — is also open to non-Native people who want to advocate on campus and beyond and we support and take care of one another,” Carmi said “We refer to each other as family; I think that’s probably the most important thing.”  whose doctoral program is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences is part of a working group on global indigeneity and American Indian studies which is charting the future of the Native studies curriculum “I feel really privileged to be tapped to be a part of it,” she said “It’s a hands-on experience in learning how curriculums are built and what it means to be a program.”  For graduate students who come to the University with a variety of life experiences communities like the graduate circle foster connection there’s sometimes a feeling of invisibility As much as it’s important to connect with people unlike you there’s a certain comfort to know that people understand your experiences.”  As a current graduate teaching assistant in a Native studies course Carmi hopes that students realize the humanity of Native people and come away feeling challenged to explore misconceptions they might have held “The diversity of ideas supports our campus community,” she said “I think that’s the benefit of a liberal arts education—it ultimately makes us better people.“ The dean of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy talks about her research The Well compiled all the details you need before attending UNC-Chapel Hill’s May 10 graduation The Well newsletter updates Tar Heels on UNC-Chapel Hill’s top stories NC Children’s will be North Carolina’s first freestanding hospital dedicated to caring for kids The Carolina sophomore shares her life through her poems © 2024 The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Carmi Thiessen who passed away while surrounded by her loving family on April 17 She was a happy and fun-loving person who made many good friends over the years She is survived by her four children: Mitchell (Donna) Shivak and Delores (John) Chandler; 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren They quickly grew their family to 4 children in 5 years and created a loving family home It was Carmi’s dream to be a mother and to raise a family – and she accomplished that with flying colours the Thiessen kids had many adventures together some of which were no doubt challenging for Carmi They had adventures like painting the outside of the house and lawn in different colours of oil-based paint and like opening and sampling the Christmas gifts intended for their grandparents A favourite memory of Carmi’s was the time the kids got up in the middle of the night and ate the chocolate cake she had baked for the next day They even took baby Angie out of her crib and put her in the high chair Jack and Carmi heard the noise in the kitchen and when they saw the 4 of them eating cake The highlight of family life had been the annual camping trips to Nicola Lake where they created many happy memories with family and friends Jack and Carmi continued to go to Nicola Lake They also enjoyed many cruises and several trips to Hawaii they enjoyed 10 years of travel to California and Nevada with fellow RV’ers who became great friends Retirement years were spent visiting family and friends and continuing to travel until health issues caught up with them Jack passed away in December 2023 and Carmi dearly missed him and the life they had together she was able to take a trip to the Coast for a reunion of her high school friends and made 2 more trips to California before her own health challenges set in thank you for the many sacrifices you made for our family No words can express how much you will be missed and how much you will always be loved you always pushed through and laughed that big laugh of yours While it was heartbreaking to see this new pain win and your laugh fade away we are comforted knowing you are now resting in peace and dancing in Dad’s arms” In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society can be made in Carmi’s name please scroll down the page to the area call “Condolences” Carmelita “Carmi” Kathleen is scheduled for Monday Below you will find the map for the service location and the contact information should you have any questions » Condolences sent through this page can be seen by the public.
