Jennifer.Garay@wbd.com The Residents of Carmichael Road on Sunday got together at a meeting to chalk out a plan to save a privately-owned green cover plot from going under development the residents of Malabar hill came together to discuss the fate of a lush green plot on Carmichael road which was initially earmarked as a children park but later changed to residential purposes in the development plan 2034 as it was sold by its Parsi owners to Mah-hill properties (Photo by Anshuman Poyrekar/ Hindustan Times) (Hindustan Times) The residents claim that over one acre of land which houses several trees was originally reserved for a children’s park the Brihanmumbai Municipal corporation (BMC) had to pay a conveyance to the owner and build a park The land parcel has been sold by the Parsi owners to Mah-hill properties we are not sure what will happen to the land but there should be a children’s park here if this was the designated spot The Carmichael road and the surrounding places do not have a designated open space in the area,” said Pervin Sanghavi a resident association which advocates for open spaces as per the development plan 2034 made under Maharashtra regional town planning act the plot’s status was changed and earmarked as a residential place The residents are concerned about harming the biodiversity they also highlighted the hazards of construction taking place in a landslide prone area “When a landslide took place five years back a survey was conducted which said more trees should be planted to hold the land together If they tear down so many trees and take up construction it could cause more hazards,” said another resident “We will find documents about the history of the plot and how the status of the plot was changed The plot comes under the coastal regulatory zone so there are several implications We will try to find a solution,” said Zoru Bhathena Carmichael provided the offense and Crossland delivered a quality start as the Sooners beat Ole pic.twitter.com/lLMK2AjzhA Carmichael blasted his 11th home run of the season as part of a three-run first inning it took Crooks coming on to pitch a scoreless ninth to secure the victory Crooks recorded his 12th save of the season with the tying run at second base Trey Gambill opened the Sooners’ side of the first with a one-out triple to the gap in right-center field Carmichael the hammered a 2-1 pitch from Riley Maddox over the wall and just inside the left field foul pole for a 2-0 OU lead Jaxon Willits followed that with a single to left and Kyle Branch came through with a single through the left side After Scott Mudler walked to load the bases Mason Hamlin grounded into a fielder’s choice at third base as Willits raced home for a 3-0 lead The Rebels cut it to 3-1 in the second when Austin Fawley hit an 0-1 pitch from Crossland over the left field fence The Sooners extended their lead to 5-1 in the fifth — with two completely different types of ball Carmichael led off with another homer off Maddox to make it 4-1 Mudler greeted Walker Hooks with a single to right Hamlin then walked to load the bases again Dawson Willis drew a walk that brought Branch home and put grade when she went on a field trip to the courthouse Even though she didn’t fully understand the proceedings “it just fascinated me to see the courtroom and to see this person in a black robe,” she said Carmichael didn’t realize until years later that the attorneys and judge were all men that was something I wanted to do,” she said Carmichael has done a lot of work with families and advocated for problem-solving courts to better support people experiencing substance use disorder or who need mental wellness resources She studied pre-law at Michigan State University for a time before returning home to attend IU Southeast and law school at the University of Louisville She started her career as a staff attorney at the Kentucky Supreme Court and in 1989 became the chief public defender in Clark County She recalls some women attorneys taking her to lunch to advise her on how to respond if she was treated negatively Carmichael said she didn’t feel she was treated unfairly by male colleagues but she never forgot the lesson on being prepared “And that's the way I always practiced,” she said “I wanted to know as much as I could — more than I needed to know in a lot of situations about the case — so that when I got into court Carmichael spent six years as the chief public defender and practiced privately She ran unsuccessfully for judge of the now-abolished Jeffersonville City Court before winning that seat in 1999 She served nearly two terms before voters elected her three times as a Clark County judge She retired in late December and Republican Judge Lisa Reger was sworn into Clark County Circuit Court No Carmichael said she’s seen a “monumental shift” for the better in the way courts handle defendants with certain charges or who need mental health or substance use support “When I started practicing criminal defense ‘what's the best deal I can get for my client?’” she said “It wasn't ‘let's treat their mental health It’s a change Carmichael has been instrumental in implementing in Southern Indiana. She’s been a proponent of growing the area’s problem-solving courts along with others in the local judicial systems and the support of the state and Indiana Chief Justice Loretta Rush Carmichael handled a lot of the county’s higher level felony and murder cases juvenile and Children in Need of Services (CHINS) cases When she started the Clark County Family Recovery Court in 2011 she said it was to help families confronting substance use disorders “I saw parents who were losing their kids because of addiction issues and I said ‘There's got to be a better way she and her staff didn’t see the successes they were hoping for They heard the parents wanted options for things including longer-term treatment We didn't think about those issues,” she said “What we’ve found over the years is we don’t fix people We give them tools and resources and the ability to help themselves.” In 2023, Carmichael talked with LPM News about the county’s work to start a mental health wellness court She’s also done work with Veterans Court of Southern Indiana — the first veterans court in the state — which was started more than a decade ago by Floyd County Superior 3 Judge Maria Granger Carmichael said some of the most fulfilling work has been in helping juveniles and children and mentoring other judges and attorneys She also appreciates when she hears from people who say she helped improve their lives “‘I maybe gave you the tools but you did it.’ That’s rewarding when people thank me for doing my job.” She said she hopes she’s made an impact in the area “I think my interest in helping people — in solving the problem rather than just putting a Band-Aid aid on it — has made a difference in how we do things,” she said She also talked about some of the cases that stand out to her. She presided over the extensive murder trial of Joseph Oberhansley who was ultimately convicted of killing his former girlfriend six years prior In another case, Brian Williams pleaded guilty in 2023 to the 2021 killing of 67-year-old Melody Gambetty at her Clarksville home she said it’s always been important to treat people with respect regardless of why they’re coming before her colleagues and friends gathered for a send-off for the judge There was a large cake with her photo and the words “What’s next?” and wants to keep giving back to her community Though she won’t be behind the bench in Clark County she’ll be working part time in the Clark County Public Defender’s office She’ll be a senior judge in Floyd and Scott counties She also has her eyes on the mayor’s seat in Jeffersonville in 2027 Republican Mayor Mike Moore was just elected to a fourth term after running unopposed in November “I’m not done giving back,” Carmichael said “I grew up here and I think that Jeffersonville is a wonderful place [and] we have so many opportunities to make it better.” She said although she thinks Moore has done a great job “I think that I could present a different vision for the future of Jeffersonville.” and the Caesars Foundation of Floyd County.  Louisville Public Media depends on donations from members – generous people like you – for the majority of our funding You can help make the next story possible with a donation of $10 or $20 We'll put your gift to work providing news and music for our diverse community daughter of the late David and Betty (States) Carmichael Jeff Lefchick of East Freedom; two daughters: Ashley Shiffler of Hollidaysburg Nolan Stahl and wife Avery of Erie; fourteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two sisters: Tara Welt and Heather Keefer; and two brothers: David and Scott Carmichael  Teresa graduated from Hollidaysburg High School and worked as a server at the Chuckwagon restaurant for many years and spending time with her family and her cat Friends will be received from 1 to 4pm Tuesday 2024 at Sorge Funeral Home & Crematory Inc. Great American Songbook] we’re paying tribute to songwriter and jazz legend Hoagy Carmichael became one of the most beloved entertainers of the early 20th century and also wrote some of the most beloved American songs like “The Nearness of You,” “Skylark,” and “Georgia On My Mind.” This hour hearing those songs performed by Frank Sinatra It’s Star Dust: The Hoagy Carmichael Songbook Louis Armstrong live at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1957 with “Lazy River,” written in 1930 by New Orleans clarinetist Sidney Arodin and songwriter Hoagy Carmichael MUSIC CLIP - ARTIE SHAW & HIS ORCHESTRA we’re exploring some of the best entries in the Hoagy Carmichael songbook We’ll start with a song that he wrote in his hometown of Bloomington just a few blocks from the WFIU studios where I’m recording this episode and has since gone on to become his most famous and most widely recorded song despite the complexity of its melody and harmony There are over 1000 versions of this song in existence I’m talking about “Stardust.” The legendary story of “Stardust”’s genesis goes that Hoagy was walking around Indiana University’s campus one night in 1927 looking up at the starry sky and thinking about a past love He stepped into the downtown coffee house known as “The Book Nook,” sat down at the piano inside he had probably been tinkering with the melody for a year or so And the title “Star Dust” was dreamt up by his pal Stu Gorrell not necessarily inspired by Hoagy’s own glances skyward It’s an instrumental melody—intricate and serpentine—and although Carmichael tried his hand at some lyrics early on he ultimately didn’t think of it as a love song with words publisher Irving Mills asked lyricist Mitchell Parish to pen some lyrics to “Stardust,” which became the song we know today.  It’s been a standard among vocalists since it was first performed in recordings by both Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong back in 1931 Let’s hear a popular version from 1940 now This is the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra featuring Frank Sinatra and the Pied Pipers with Hoagy Carmichael’s “Stardust,” on Afterglow Two early songs written by Hoagy Carmichael we heard “Georgia On My Mind,” written in 1930 by Carmichael with lyrics by his close friend Stu Gorrell That was performed by Billie Holiday in 1941 Carmichael’s enduring standard “Stardust,” whose title was created by Gorrell but whose lyrics were written by Mitchell Parish That was performed by Frank Sinatra and the Pied Pipers along with Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra in 1941 Hoagy Carmichael worked with many lyricsts over the years he had landed a job at the film studio Paramount as a staff songwriter and the studio would often assign him a staff lyricist to work with that lyricist was a man by the name of Frank Loesser who later went on to become a notable composer in his own right penning things like the musical Guys and Dolls but they have gone on to become enduring classics Here is Mel Tormé in 1951 with the most enduring song by the duo of Hoagy Carmichael and Frank Loesser “Heart and Soul,” on Afterglow Two standards from 1938 written by Hoagy Carmichael and lyricist Frank Loesser we heard Julie London in 1959 with “Two Sleepy People,” first sung by Bob Hope and Shirley Ross in the film The Big Broadcast of 1938 the song “Heart And Soul,” performed there by Mel Tormé for Capitol Records in 1951 Even though the majority of Hoagy Carmichael’s songs were written in the first half of the 20th-century his songs still continue to be performed today I’m going to play now a few versions from here in the 21st century This first one comes from singer Kurt Elling from his 2001 album Flirting With Twilight The song is a curious one in Carmichael’s catalog “I Get Along Without You Very Well,” a lovely tune about the attempt at perseverance after a broken heart Carmichael based the song off of a poem he read in Life magazine titled “Except Sometimes,” written by a mysterious author who went by the initials J.B still had the copyright on the original poem The call went out on Walter Winchell’s radio show a 71-year-old woman living in Philadelphia but it’s very likely that Thompson passed away before she heard it performed on the radio in 1939 This is Kurt Elling with “I Get Along Without You Very Well,” on Afterglow “I GET ALONG WITHOUT YOU VERY WELL” and the 1937 Hoagy Carmichael and Ned Washington song “The Nearness of You.” Before that with the 1939 Hoagy Carmichael and Jane Brown Thompson song “I Get Along Without You Very Well.” We’ll hear more of the Hoagy Carmichael songbook in just a bit “I GET ALONG WITHOUT YOU VERY WELL“ We’ve been sampling from the Hoagy Carmichael songbook this hour Carmichael’s birthday is on November 22nd Carmichael was an excellent composer and occasional lyricist more often working with wordsmiths like Ned Washington or Frank Loesser One of his most celebrated collaborators was a fellow singer–songwriter Johnny Mercer Mercer was 10 years younger than Carmichael and being from Georgia and Indiana (respectively) they had a more folksy approach to songwriting than many of the more urbane songwriters working in Tin Pan Alley.  and worked together several times over the decades Carmichael gave Mercer a melody he had on hand called “Bix Lix,” named after his old friend Carmichael and Mercer crafted that melody into a song This is Carmen McRae with Hoagy Carmichael and Johnny Mercer’s “Skylark,” on Afterglow Two songs by Hoagy Carmichael and lyricist Johnny Mercer we heard Dean Martin in 1951 with “In The Cool Cool of the Evening.” That song was originally intended to be in an unproduced Betty Hutton film in 1959 but later reworked into the Bing Crosby film Here Comes The Groom in 1951 and later won an Academy Award for Best Original Song we heard their celebrated song “Skylark,” written in 1941 and performed there in 1959 by singer Carmen McRae While Hoagy Carmichael’s songs became fixtures in Hollywood in the 1930s the man himself also became a fixture on screen as an actor His first main role was in the 1944 Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall film To Have And Have Not Carmichael plays a few of his original songs in the film The lyrics here are by one of his great collaborators who understood Carmichael’s folksy charm inspired in part by Jewish cantor melodies although it was deemed too difficult for Lauren Bacall to sing in the film which is why it ended up as background music.  This is Hoagy Carmichael’s “Baltimore Oriole,” on Afterglow Singer Teddi King in 1954 with Hoagy Carmichael’s “New Orleans,” one of the few songs where he wrote both melody and words in1957 singing “Baltimore Oriole,” a song written in 1944 with lyricist Paul Francis Webster.  There are entries in the Hoagy Carmichael songbook that are somewhat problematic here in the 21st century I don’t feel entirely comfortable playing songs like “Hong Kong Blues” or “Doctor Indian Chief,” with the stereotypes that they portray And even beloved songs like “Rockin’ Chair” and “Lazybones,” as catchy as they are A common occurrence in pop tunes from the late 1920s and early 1930s it’s not the racial politics that are the issue And it’s not that they are offensive The dated lyrics here are by Harold Adamson but Carmichael’s melody is timeless and infectious Here is singer Kay Starr in 1950 with Hoagy Carmichael and Harold Adamson’s “A Woman Likes To Be Told,” on Afterglow Kay Starr with an instruction manual for clueless 1940s bachelors That was Hoagy Carmichael and Harold Adamson’s “A Woman Likes To Be Told.” To close off this episode on Hoagy Carmichael’s songs I want to feature a performance from the man himself Hoagy is often considered to be one of the original “singer-songwriters” in American pop music Right outside of our radio studio here at WFIU in Hoagy Carmichael’s hometown of Bloomington and you’ll often find someone has placed freshly picked flowers in one of his hands The statue is lifesize and incredibly lifelike: a gaunt but handsome figure sitting at a full-size Steinway Grand Piano cast in bronze with his sportcoat strewn onto the piano frame Hoagy is permanently tinkling away at his original tune “Memphis In June,” the sheet music sitting in front of him.  from the 1956 album Hoagy Sings Carmichael with “Memphis In June,” on Afterglow performing his own song “Memphis In June,” with lyrics by Paul Francis Webster Thanks for tuning in to this Hoagy Carmichael songbook edition of Afterglow MUSIC CLIP - LESTER YOUNG WITH THE OSCAR PETERSON TRIO just a few blocks from the WFIU studios where I produce this show And the title “Star Dust” (originally two words) was dreamt up by his pal and fellow IU student Stu Gorrell (Gorrell also wrote the lyrics to Carmichael's early tune "Georgia On My Mind"—it was his only credit as a songwriter While Hoagy Carmichael occasionally wrote his own lyrics he mostly collaborated with other lyricsts over the years known today as “Skylark.”  Their collaboaration also turned into critical success they wrote a song called “In The Cool Cool of the Evening” for a Betty Hutton film so it was reworked for the Bing Crosby film Here Comes The Groom in 1951 Carmichael had landed a job at the film studio Paramount as a staff songwriter Hoagy and Frank only wrote a few songs in 1938 but each of those songs have gone on to become enduring classics including "Heart And Soul" and "Two Sleepy People." One of the more curious collaborations in Carmichael’s catalog came with a song called “I Get Along Without You Very Well,” a lovely tune about the attempt at perseverance after a broken heart like  “Baltimore Oriole” were used as background music The lyrics to “Baltimore Oriole” were written by one of his great collaborators who co-wrote songs like "Memphis In June," and understood Carmichael’s folksy charm Kurt Elling recorded “I Get Along Without You Very Well” on his 2001 album Flirting With Twilight and Norah Jones recorded his song “The Nearness of You,” which he wrote with lyricist Ned Washington in 1937 on her Grammy-winning 2002 album Come Away With Me there are some entries in the Hoagy Carmichael songbook that are somewhat problematic here in the 21st century This was a common occurrence in pop tunes from the late 1920s and early 1930s Even a song like "A Woman Like To Be Told," first performed by Kay Starr Hoagy Carmichael was more than just a songwriter. He is often considered to be one of the original “singer-songwriters” in American pop music Carmichael sang this tune in the 1945 film Johnny Angel and "Memphis In June" was also one of the many songs featured on the 1956 album Hoagy Sings Carmichael why it showed up as his song of choice on the IU statue—instead of the more appropriate "Stardust," which he wrote in Bloomington—remains unclear My colleague David Brent Johnson and I even reached out to Carmichael's son was a song about the south and what it felt like living there I can't remember my father ever talking about that song and certainly not in a tone that would place at the top of his list I think someone there at IU decided it was Carmichael-like Afterglow is a weekly program of jazz and American popular song hosted by Mark Chilla and produced by WFIU Public Media in Bloomington, Indiana. These findings contradict a previous 2012 report on "masking," which suggested earthquake signals could not cover up explosion signals The idea of explosions being masked by natural seismic signals will be a source of concern to scientists tasked with monitoring nuclear testing around the world Under the terms of the 1996 Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), all nuclear explosions are prohibited whether for military or peaceful purposes Carmichael warned that his findings suggest that "background seismicity in regions where there's any sort of seismicity at all is going to measurably and substantially reduce the probability that we can detect signals from an underground explosion at a test site." Carmichael noted that in countries like North Korea where six nuclear tests have been conducted in the past 20 years an increase in regional seismic instruments indicates "there's been a lot more low-magnitude seismicity in the vicinity of test sites than we initially realized." North Korea's nuclear program was recently described as being "completely off the charts," with South Korea already being prepared for a potential attack The review also highlighted how the natural signals from earthquake swarms and other repeating seismic events could also be hidden within overlapping waveforms the masking effect could potentially lead to a drop from 92 percent to 16 percent in detection rates Carmichael said: "This may mean that we probably underestimate a lot of the low magnitude seismicity that is sourced during a swarm or an aftershock sequence." we could be largely undercounting the number of earthquakes that occur in these swarms or in certain aftershock sequences." The theory of explosion masking has proven to be difficult to prove in practice This is largely down to a lack of explosions to examine as well as limited data containing both natural seismic signals and explosions Rather than simulate explosion data to reach their findings Carmichael and his colleagues utilized data on explosions and natural seismicity at the Nevada National Security Site Scaling down the amplitude of the explosion data they then mixed this waveform with earthquake signals to try and determine if the two could be differentiated by detectors It's important to note that a coinciding earthquake alone would not be enough to cover up an explosion even of this kind Multiple factors go into effective nuclear test monitoring such as looking for the presence of certain radionuclides in the atmosphere Newsweek has contacted Nuclear Security Technologies a company at the forefront of detecting and verifying potential nuclear tests worldwide through seismic data Do you have a tip on a science story that Newsweek should be covering?
