Company building 90,000 sq ft facility in Carol Stream
Construction has started on a new data center in the Carol Stream area of Chicago
The Village of Carol Stream this month announced the area’s first data center
Carol Stream is a village in DuPage County
Located at 245 Kehoe Boulevard, the site previously housed the Henkel adhesives company. The Henkel building was demolished in 2022, and the site is currently being prepared for a 90,000 sq ft (8,360 sqm) data center. Power Construction is developing the site
According to the Daily Herald
Carol Stream received the building permit application in April 2024
and issued permits for the single-story facility in September
but a further three acres may be acquired in the future for further development
Carol Stream Community Development Director Don Bastian told the publication Oppidan is bound by NDAs and can’t disclose the intended end user
Its Carol Stream building was demolished in 2022
and the site underwent soil remediation in May 2022
The previous building was a 50,300 sq ft (4,675 sqm) single-story facility built around 1971 for the Pierce & Stevens Chemical Corp
and adhesives for the graphic arts and book/magazine publishing industries
Henkel had owned the site since 2005 after acquiring Sovereign Specialty Chemicals
which had taken over Pierce & Stevens in the 1990s
Minnesota-based Oppidan is a property development firm
Its data center clients in the past have reportedly included Oracle
Data Centre Dynamics Ltd (DCD), 32-38 Saffron Hill, London, EC1N 8FH Email. [email protected]DCD is a subsidiary of InfraXmedia
The Rustic Fox in Carol Stream will offer an outdoor market starting this May
The “Farmer & Artisan Market” will be held in the parking lot at 570 S
beginning May 3 and running through to Oct
Granted special event approval by Carol Stream’s Administration Department in late February
it’s believed to be the first large-scale outdoor market in the village
“It’s kind of like an extension of what we have inside
but then we offer things that just are better suited for a pop-up market
so the customer has the opportunity to meet the people behind the stuff they’re buying and they can create a relationship with them,” said The Rustic Fox’s Nicole Kolosowski
Not the conventional market offering vegetables and fruit
The Rustic Fox market will showcase baked goods
and other items from curators and creators
a partner in the business with Lisa Asturrizaga and Martin Bernal
Kolosowski said she hopes the Carol Stream market will attract 3,000 people on any given Saturday
Starting with its October 2024 proposal to Carol Stream
The Rustic Fox worked with the village and police department to alleviate public safety concerns
including possible obstruction to businesses by holding the market in the parking lot
“We’re certainly looking forward to the traffic that it’ll bring to the area,” said Carol Stream Community Development Director Don Bastian
maybe it’ll draw people to Carol Stream that haven’t been here before
The Rustic Fox celebrated its grand opening in Carol Stream on Aug
Twenty-five of them had to deal with a break in a water pipe that forced The Rustic Fox’s closure in January and February
but “things are back on track,” Kolosowski said
The Rustic Fox started at 1790 Towne Center Drive
in September 2020 as an outlet for small businesses displaced by the COVID-19 pandemic
It currently also has about 130 permanent small businesses
A farmers and artisan market debuted in North Aurora in 2022 on the second and fourth Saturdays
starting with about 30 vendors and since growing
It’s definitely our most popular event of the year
so it’s a very large market,” Kolosowski said
“It’s a fun day out for people because there’s so much to shop and so much to see
it’s just a great morning to spend there,” Kolosowski said
She’s known as “Crime Free Carol” around town
but Carol Stream police officer Carol Cadle has a new title to go by this year: Illinois’ top cop
The Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police has chosen Cadle as winner of its James J
given annually to the state’s Most Outstanding Officer of the Year
It’s an honor as unexpected as it is deserved for the 26-year veteran of the Carol Stream force
I asked why,” Cadle said when she learned she was up for the honor
“I’m not pulling babies out of a burning building.”
But the fact Cadle won the award without headline-grabbing heroics is a tribute to her work as the department’s crime prevention and community relations officer
“We have 68 sworn officers to serve a community of about 40,000
and that requires trust and legitimacy,” Chief Don Cummings said
“The work that Carol does allows us to establish that trust and legitimacy.”

seniors and community groups such as Rotary and the park district
Cummings told us that under Cadle’s leadership
attendance at the town’s National Night Out event every August has quadrupled to about 2,000
“It’s become an unbelievable success,” he said
“It’s all about relationships,” Cadle said
She also credits Cummings and her previous chief
for giving her the freedom to be innovative and grow the programs she leads
“I’m so thankful to be in this position,” Cadle said
adding that her faith is a big part of what drives her
Cadle’s nickname is a nod to the #CrimeFreeCarol hashtag department civilian employee Dino Heckermann created to accompany social media posts highlighting her work in the community
who formally nominated Cadle for the ILACP award
Cadle will receive the award April 25 at the ILACP’s annual banquet at the Lincolnshire Marriott Resort
The ILACP’s Chief of the Year award also is headed to the suburbs
as Evanston’s Schenita Stewart — previously deputy chief in East Dundee — captured the award this year
the association said her commitment to officer well-being
transparency and community engagement “has set a new standard in policing.”
Stewart took the top job in Evanston in 2022
after serving about 18 months as East Dundee’s deputy chief
she spent more than 20 years with the Lincolnwood Police Department

Kane County State's Attorney Jamie Mosser is set to release findings of an investigation into that day’s events
Mosser and Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain will discuss the investigation during a 1 p.m
Deputies killed James Moriarty about 3 p.m
after a chase on Randall Road ended when the Aurora man crashed into a car at the Fabyan Parkway intersection in Batavia
Hain said at the time that when a police dog was sent to apprehend him
Moriarty's family and Aurora police have contended he likely could have been arrested peacefully a day earlier
The 38-year-old was wanted on warrants for several cases involving high-speed chases
Aurora police say their undercover officers were watching his parked car the night before and planned to arrest him when he came out of his apartment
but Kane County deputies interfered by coming on the scene and seizing the car
Hain denies being told about Aurora's plan
but also criticized Aurora police for their actions
saying they were being “reactive” for just “sitting on it (the car)” while his department is “proactive.”

Carol Stream trustees adopted a 1% grocery tax during Monday’s village board meeting
Carol Stream approved the grocery tax in response to the loss of proceeds from the statewide 1% grocery tax Gov
which is when the Carol Stream tax will go into effect
Illinois communities seeking no interruption in collecting these taxes need to adopt an ordinance and file it with the Illinois Department of Revenue by Oct
Carol Stream joins other suburbs such as Algonquin
and Wheaton in recently approving grocery taxes
Burlington and Palatine got a head start filing the paperwork
adopting ordinances last year after Pritzker’s action
Indications that Carol Stream would adopt a grocery tax were there in a budget workshop held after the Feb
“We have no choice but to put it back on or we’ll have another … hole in our budget,” Mayor Frank Saverino Sr
Carol Stream Finance Director Jon Batek estimated that without replacing the statewide tax the village could lose $550,000 to $600,000 in revenue
Batek’s memo said eliminating the tax also would disrupt a redevelopment agreement with the developer of an Angelo Caputo’s Fresh Markets store at 550 E
A portion of the development incentives are paid directly from grocery taxes
While Carol Stream and other municipalities may adopt their own grocery taxes
distributed and enforced by the Illinois Department of Revenue
we need to take 40% of that 1% because we’re collecting it for you?” he asked rhetorically at Monday’s meeting
“They’ve figured out a way to give us the responsibility
but then we have no way to stop them from taking the money away,” he added
The niece of a man killed during a confrontation with Carol Stream police last year has pleaded guilty to making threats against officers during a protest over the deadly shooting

Barnes will enter a pretrial diversion program
If she completes it successfully by April 16
she will be allowed to withdraw her plea and prosecutors will dismiss the charge
Barnes also must perform 12 days of work in the Sheriff’s Work Alternative Program

and write a letter of apology to the Carol Stream Police Department
mob action also were dropped as part of the plea agreement
Authorities say Barnes made the threat June 26 while she and others protested the killing of Isaiah Goodlow III along Gary Avenue
about a mile south of the police department
DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced he would not prosecute the officer who shot Goodlow
During a detention hearing after her arrest
prosecutors told a judge Barnes said “I'll blow this building up
as police were investigating a domestic abuse complaint
Police said he was behind the bedroom door when police entered the dark room and saw him with a raised arm
Believing he was armed or reaching for a weapon
Berlin said he did not have sufficient evidence to charge the police officer with a crime
but also declined to say the shooting was justified
Two people were taken to a hospital after a crash Tuesday afternoon in Carol Stream
at the intersection of North Avenue and County Farm Road
according to Carol Stream Fire Department Battalion Chief Chad Grandgeorge
Both vehicles — a semitruck and a box truck — were traveling east on North Avenue at the time of the crash
No further information was immediately available
including the two people’s conditions or the cause of the crash

Four men have been charged with stealing items from three Home Depot stores in Carol Stream
DuPage County prosecutors say it happened in February
appeared Tuesday in First Appearance Court
They were released pretrial because burglary and retail theft are not detainable offenses
Criztobal Alvarez-Olivera and Flores stole merchandise worth $698
including a wall-mount garage door opener and a portable car charger
from the Home Depot at 2000 Butterfield Road
Authorities say that on March 31 the duo stole $676 worth of items from the store located at 475 S
The stolen items included two air compressors and two multi-tools
all four men went into the Home Depot at 7200 Woodward Ave
in Woodridge and took $4,482 worth of power tools
they took $6,638 worth of power tools from the Carol Stream store
The men are charged with felony burglary and felony retail theft
Alvarez-Olivera is also charged with misdemeanor resisting a peace officer on an allegation he ran away from a Carol Stream detective trying to arrest him
The case was investigated by Downers Grove police
A 29-year-old Carol Stream man is facing multiple child exploitation charges following a monthslong investigation by police
is charged with indecent solicitation of a child-aggravated criminal sexual abuse
He was arrested Tuesday following an investigation that began in November 2024
The investigation began after a citizen familiar with Rai “witnessed suspicious public behavior” between Rai and a 13-year-old girl
One of the girl's parents eventually sought an order of protection for the child
the parent wrote a neighbor had reported suspected abuse to police based on their doorbell camera showing the defendant kissing the youth and touching her buttocks
Court records indicate Rai and the girl had communicated for several months via Instagram messaging
Rai filed a response denying the allegations
Rai was granted pretrial release Wednesday and ordered to stay away from the girl
His next court date is slated for March 24
Possible human remains have been discovered near Carol Stream
DuPage County Coroner Richard Jorgensen confirmed that his office responded to the scene Tuesday morning and an investigation is underway
Multiple DuPage sheriff and unmarked vehicles were parked in the lot of the Ozinga concrete business
The investigation site was roughly midway between the business and Schmale Road
The Great Western Trail was still closed Wednesday at the Schmale entrance by a gate
The sheriff’s office is handling the investigation
a spokesman for the sheriff’s office declined to provide any information
“Unfortunately this matter is still under investigation as of this email and I am unable to share any information at this point,” the spokesman wrote
As Carol Stream resident Chuck Drungelo laid in a hospital bed in April 2020
hooked up to machines that were keeping him alive
COVID-19 had sickened everyone in Drungelo’s household but hit him the worst
leaving him with multiple organ system failures
One critical care specialist at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield said Drungelo’s odds of survival likely were less than 10%
“It almost doesn’t seem real,” the now-59-year-old Drungelo said of the life-threatening experience
The four members of the Drungelo family contracted COVID-19 in quick succession just as the pandemic was starting to ravage the U.S
Diane and Jordan were in Central DuPage Hospital’s intensive care ward simultaneously
Drungelo’s asthma made him more vulnerable to severe complications
His lungs became inflamed with infection and his case became the most critical in the hospital
When traditional treatments proved unsuccessful, doctors tried a form of artificial life support called extracorporeal membrane oxygenation
They connected him to a heart-lung bypass machine that funneled his blood out of his body
warmed it and then pumped it back into him
Drungelo was heavily sedated and medically paralyzed to keep him from moving
“Some of them were hard to put together — what was real
Diane Drungelo remembers the frustration and uncertainty she felt as her husband and his medical team waged a battle for his life
“The doctors knew so little about COVID at that time
They just couldn't answer the questions I had,” she said
“When Chuck finally came home … we were surrounded by ICU nurses from CDH who
were not seeing many people survive,” Diane Drungelo said
“Many nurses had taken care of all three of us at different times.”
Drungelo returned to his job as a supervisor at a South Elgin plastics company in fall 2020
“I wanted to try to get back to as normal a life as possible.”
Drungelo processes and remembers information differently now
and he has food sensitivities that didn’t exist before he got sick
Drungelo also struggled with survivor’s guilt
wondering why he lived while many others — especially children — didn’t
He said he worked with a therapist to overcome those feelings
Carol Stream’s first data center is being constructed in an industrial area north of North Avenue
The installation of precast concrete wall panels started Nov
single-story data center developed by Oppidan Holdings LLC of Minnesota
The building will sit on an 11.41-acre industrial property at 245 Kehoe Blvd.
the previous home of the Henkel Corporation business manufacturing and supply company
That building was demolished in 2022, and the site underwent soil remediation in May 2022
Data centers house information technology for building, running and delivering applications and services, and storing and managing associated data, according to IBM.
Modern data centers may be used as remote facilities or networks owned by cloud service providers for shared use by companies and customers
The village of Carol Stream received the building permit application and building permit plans on April 19
With the developer bound by a nondisclosure agreement
the village has not been provided with the name of the end user of the facility
said Carol Stream Community Development Director Don Bastian
“The nature of these places is they store a lot of data and data quite often contains sensitive information or personal information
so they tend to be secure facilities,” he said
An 8-foot-tall fence will be installed along the perimeter of the building for added security
The property also will include 28 parking spots in front of the building’s Kimberly Drive entrance
there will be a stormwater drainage pond in the southeastern corner of the site
Bastian said a 3-acre parcel to the west of the retention pond may be sold for additional development
the data center will need to be filled with the computer servers and technology necessary for its operation
Bastian said it’s not expected to be operational until 2026
“Municipalities view data centers as positive economic development projects because they can generate significant municipal utility taxes while placing very low demand on municipal services,” Bastian said
A year after Isaac Goodlow III was shot to death by a Carol Stream police officer called to a domestic dispute
his family and their lawyers continue to say an injustice has been done
“We need Carol Stream police held accountable for what they did to Isaac,” Kennetha Barnes
She and Goodlow’s mother, Bonnie Pigram, have filed a federal lawsuit against the village and the police officers involved
They allege officers unlawfully entered his apartment without a warrant and used excessive force in the deadly shooting
Family attorney Steven Hart called the village's account of the shooting 100% false and has accused the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office of making false statements about the killing
“They don't prosecute police in this county
State’s Attorney Robert Berlin fired back when asked about those comments
“My decision not to prosecute the officers involved was based on evidence, facts and applicable laws,” he said. “All findings from the investigation have been released, unaltered, to the public and are available to the public on the Village of Carol Stream’s website
Hart has every right to discuss the civil case he has filed on behalf of Mr
baseless and outright false claims to advance that case and no basis to question the integrity of myself and my office.”
Authorities say the shooting occurred in the early morning hours of Feb
after Goodlow's girlfriend called police to report she’d been attacked
Police say they tried to contact Goodlow inside his apartment for about 50 minutes
When the girlfriend gave them permission to go in
Goodlow was shot several seconds later when
he stepped out from behind a door and raised a bent arm
Pigram insists police body-camera video viewed by the family shows Goodlow was in bed when he was shot
saying there was no blood found on Goodlow’s bedding
The family also maintains Goodlow’s girlfriend had no right to authorize police to enter the apartment
Lawyers for the family and the village are still arguing over deposing the officers
and whether the plaintiffs can view unredacted copies of documents from a village-hired attorney’s internal investigation of the shooting
Roselle police officers went to a townhouse Oct
to help firefighters check out a reported gas leak
Spotting a 1-inch opening in a chained and locked kitchen cabinet door
officers peeked inside and found suspicious items that turned out to be marijuana and 37 bags containing residue of heroin
More than six years later — after townhouse occupant Casey Robert Hagestedt was convicted on a felony drug charge and sentenced to 6 months in jail — the state's highest court has thrown out the case
The Illinois Supreme Court ruled unanimously last week that police conducted an unconstitutional search and reversed Hagestedt's conviction for unlawful possession of a controlled substance
Prosecutors argued before the court that officers didn't conduct a search at all
They just spotted suspicious items “in plain view” through the open gap between the cabinet and cabinet door
They noted that after seeing the cabinet door slightly ajar
officers pried it open further and used a flashlight to snoop inside
“While the cabinet itself was in plain view
The cabinet was secured with a chain and a padlock
and the chain was wrapped tightly around the cabinet handles,” Justice Mary Kay O'Brien wrote in the 8-0 decision
watch out for people who will not only break your heart
but empty your wallet and steal your identity
The Better Business Bureau says reports of romance scams are surging
Most start with fake profiles on online dating sites created by scammers stealing photos and text from real accounts
The person claims to live in another part of the country or overseas
They suggest moving the relationship to email or a chat app
to test the waters and then an “emergency” pops up that requires your financial assistance
and they’re often left feeling betrayed because they believed they’d found a good partner,” Bernas said
To avoid a broken bank with your broken heart
the BBB recommends: Don’t give money or personal information to a stranger; do a reverse-image search of any photos they post in their profile; research dating websites before you sign up; and if someone wants to get serious very quickly without first meeting in person
If you have encountered a scam, even if you didn’t lose money, report it to BBB Scamtracker
Office sought: Carol Stream Elementary District 93 board (Vote for 4)
Is there a particular issue that motivates you
I am running because I believe in the power of education
and what fostering an equitable and quality environment means to both our community and our children
I want to contribute to a future where every student has the resources
and opportunities to reach their fullest potential; and based on my interaction with the community thus far
I feel one of the best ways to go about that is by bringing the topic of the district's budget to the forefront of the discussion
What is the role of the school board in setting and monitoring the curriculum
The board has a responsibility to establish broad policy guidelines that outlines a path to success for our students
and that includes approving a curriculum framework
This means working with both district and educator leadership such as our superintendent and CSEA (our educators’ union) respectively
Ultimately it is the school board's role to provide oversight
and to advocate for a curriculum that supports the academic
and emotional growth of every student in our schools
including those with diverse learning needs
Are there curriculum issues within the district that you feel need particular attention from the board
we are outperforming the state average in math proficiency
Our district has a policy of staff reviewing curriculum for changes on a rotating basis
and I would look forward to supporting any changes they suggest in math
I believe we should strive to meet and beat the proficiency averages of our neighboring districts
How do you view your role in confronting policy or curriculum controversies: provide leadership even if unpopular
give a voice to constituents — even ones with whom you disagree
I believe it is the obligation of an elected official to always listen to the concerns of those they represent
it is the duty of the board of education to always do what you believe will benefit the students
it is the responsibility of the board to communicate with their constituents why they made the decisions they made
Describe your experience working in a group setting to determine policy
What is your style in such a setting to reach an agreement and manage school district policy
Explain how you think that will be effective in producing effective actions and decisions for your school board
we were under pressure from a client as we had to keep delaying completion of our work
there was disagreement between the engineers and technicians on what the issue was
and how best to move forward; when in a meeting I stopped the discussion and reminded everyone that our goal was to complete the contracted work
while taking into consideration our technicians safety
The solution we arrived at wasn't necessarily in line with the client’s original projected timeline for completion
but it was one that allowed our company to complete the work with integrity
while ensuring the client had all the documentation needed to protect themselves should any issue arise in the future
I would bring the same commitment to integrity
What is your assessment of the school district's diversity and equity efforts
Do you support the continuation or enhancement of such programs
I support all diversity and equity efforts and the continuation of
Diversity and equity is about ensuring that all students — especially those from historically marginalized communities — receive the support they need to thrive
Research supports that diverse and inclusive school environments benefit all students by fostering empathy
It is important for students to feel like they have a trusted adult they can confide in
that means an educator with a similar upbringing as themselves
What makes you the best candidate for the job
I have a younger sister who has Down syndrome and I see the sacrifices my parents have had to make in an effort to provide her a better life
particularly in regard to securing her a quality education
My wife’s father immigrated to this country looking for a better life for himself and his future children
getting to know him allowed me a perspective I otherwise would not have had
My wife is an educator in her hometown of Carol Stream; a place where we wanted to start and grow our family
we were comforted by the support of our family and friends
many of whom are educators with District 93; highlighting the importance of our community and the desire to one day contribute more to making it a great place to raise our children
I understand more than most the difficulties some of our families have experienced and the sacrifices they have made for their children
I will let these experiences guide me in my decision-making that I pledge will always be student focused
What’s one good idea you have to better your district that no one is talking about yet
Our district budget has a $3 million deficit this year
on top of a seven figure deficit last year and for many of the previous years
This worries me as there aren't any big construction projects happening beyond our normal maintenance
Our buildings are going to need a lot of maintenance and upgrades to stay competitive
we all heard about how our student population has drastically decreased
The budget needs to be a topic of concern for our district before we have to make drastic changes like Evanston and other districts
I believe we need to have an open conversation about if we still need six elementary schools
Cloverdale and Heritage Lakes are built to hold over 500 students
I would be in support of closing one of our smaller elementary schools and giving Cloverdale and Heritage an extra assistant principal
This would provide support for our students
while being fiscally responsible to our taxpayers
The Carol Stream Citizen of the Year awards
It started with a robust 35 nominees for the three award categories
Several individuals were nominated by more than one organization
“It was a great mix of organizations that nominated people," said Carol Stream Trustee Mary Frusolone
in her 15th year on the Citizen of the Year Committee
"We had some organizations that had never nominated people in the past
So it was great to see other organizations look within their volunteer base and nominate them."
Held March 8 at St. Andrews Golf and Country Club, the Carol Stream Citizen of the Year awards honored men and women in three different categories:
• Citizen of the Year for village residents who volunteered for one or more Carol Stream organizations in 2024;
• Special Citizen of the Year salutes residents who have volunteered for five years;
• Judges Recognition Award recognizes volunteers who live outside Carol Stream
who worked with the Carol Stream Woman’s Club and the Bags-for-Life Committee and was nominated by both
The male Citizen of the Year was Don Sutenbach of Girl Scout Troop 56610 and Benjamin School District 25 PTA
Jenny Foxe was chosen as the female Special Citizen of the Year for her work for Violet’s Kitchen
The male recipient was Eric Ehn of the Carol Stream Police Department
Seven people received the Judges Recognition Award: Bob McNees
“They’ve all done exemplary work within the community
I know all of them and am proud to live in a community that takes volunteering so seriously,” said committee member and past recipient Rick Gieser
a former village trustee serving his first term as a DuPage County Forest Preserve District commissioner
Nomination forms are available at citizenoftheyear.com.
Gieser said the exceptional showing for 2024 “just proves what a wonderful community Carol Stream is
and a giving community — that residents are willing to give time to volunteer to the many organizations throughout the community.”
When Bill Cleveland started with Carol Stream as assistant village engineer in 1990
he figured after about five years he’d move on
and it’s because of the stability that Carol Stream has,” Cleveland said during the village’s Dec
having served the last five years as Carol Stream’s director of engineering
“The political structure has been very supportive,” said Cleveland noting
there have been only two mayors during his tenure
Ross Ferraro and 18-year incumbent Frank Saverino Sr
“A lot of towns have turnover and everybody comes in with their new ideas
That can sometimes throw a wrench in the works,” Cleveland said
Instead Cleveland and his predecessor as director
aligned with the village leadership on major projects
a five-year reconstruction of the original footprint founder Jay Stream created
Armstrong Park and the Carol Stream Water Reclamation Center
costing $20 million — about $38 million in today’s dollars — included a new water main
who earned degrees at the Milwaukee School of Engineering and the University of Illinois-Chicago
A main item was a $12.5 million flood relief project of the village
Completed in 2015, it created the Armstrong Park Reservoirs within the Klein Creek Watershed
The dual reservoirs’ capacity of 37 million gallons alleviated flooding of 60 neighborhood homes
Klein Creek bank stabilization and a Gary Avenue improvement project also came under Cleveland’s tenure
“Building all the bike trails all over town seemed to be very popular,” he added
“All the things that got built for the residents and the businesses.”
Village Attorney John Rhodes and trustees praised Cleveland’s skill in writing grants
his plain explanations of complicated projects
“You’ve made Carol Stream a much better place
who read a resolution commending Cleveland’s 34-year career
“More than anything you’ll be missed,” said Trustee Matt McCarthy
An Algonquin resident and 1976 graduate of the former Dundee Community High School
Cleveland likes Frisbee golf and pickleball
introduced to the latter by his 85-year-old mother
“I’m going to teach skiing lessons up at Wilmot Mountain this winter
and scratch some things off the ‘honey-do’ list,” Cleveland said

Wheaton and Oakbrook Terrace are being closed as part of a restructuring plan announced Thursday by the Joliet Diocese
John the Apostle in Villa Park will amalgamate into St
Luke in Carol Stream will amalgamate into Corpus Christi in Carol Stream
Ascension of Our Lord in Oakbrook Terrace will merge with Christ the King in Lombard to form a new parish with a new
an amalgamation is when one parish is eliminated and joins another parish
A merger is when two parishes are eliminated to form a new parish
according to Bishop Ronald Hicks’ announcement
All the DuPage parishes being merged or amalgamated were founded during the post-World War II population spurt in DuPage County
according to newspaper articles at the time
The diocese governs Roman Catholic parishes and missions in DuPage
The diocese began what it calls a targeted restructuring process in June 2022
Thursday’s announcement signaled the end of the process
the diocese closed the elementary school at St
Charles Borromeo parish in Bensenville and Sacred Heart Catholic School in Lombard
one of the Joliet parishes appealed the decision to church officials in Rome
who overturned the diocese’s decision and allowed the parish to remain independent
there are about 520,000 Catholics in its boundaries
As a parent of a past and current student in District 93
I am interested in understanding the challenges and achievements of our school district and the decision-making process for a few years now and what really piqued my interest was my involvement in the “Portrait of a Graduate” work
and as we innovate and bring a STEAM focus to our schools
I want to lend my expertise in enhancing our move in this direction
I bring a unique perspective to help ensure alignment with our “Portrait of a Graduate” and strategic plan to ensure our students are better equipped to successfully navigate school/college/career transitions through the foundation we lay in these formative years
Areas of my interest include ensuring that we are listening to the voices of students
bringing further transparency to our efforts
making data-driven decisions while maximizing our resources
social media/technology and mental health challenges and that we are supporting all our students with research-backed methods to enhance their well-being and educational prospects
in setting our strategic goals and policies and a curriculum that aligns with our priorities for the coming years
My strong research background and professional experience will allow me to work closely and effectively with the administrators
staff and other board members in identifying areas of strength and improvement
and monitor our progress while ensuring that our resources are maximized for the benefit of all our students
I will proactively partner with stakeholders to ensure that our curriculum is set to challenge and encourage the growth of our students
support data-driven decisions and implement learnings in real-time to ensure we are meeting the desired learning objectives to promote student progress for today and their tomorrow
I believe that we are a diverse and growing community with a strong appreciation for producing responsible and successful global citizens
and this was reflected in the “Portrait of a Graduate” efforts by students
In the school board meetings that I have attended and through the broader school district communications
I see that our decisions are student-focused
we hold each other accountable on the delivery of positive outcomes for all our students and celebrate our achievements
Some of the challenges that I noted are transitions from elementary-to-middle and middle-to-high school for students
enhancing student and staff safety and well-being
and maximizing our limited resources in the areas of greatest need while ensuring the greatest impact
My view on policy and curriculum matters will always be dictated by the voices of the stakeholders involved — students
Before forming my own thoughts on any particular topic and taking any action
weigh the benefits and risks and the needs and desires of those involved
In a world that is increasing focused on data-driven decisions
it is also key to focus on the narratives of those in the community
I intend to lead while keeping this balance in mind
and communicate clearly and objectively to promote a solutions-based approach in achieving our common goal(s)
I stand strongly for collectively-made decisions and am open to reassessing these based on the needs of those involved
very adept in working in a global team setting to achieve common goals
I will bring the same work ethic to my role as a school board member with a focus on ensuring the well-being and success of the students in our district
it is essential for me to consider various perspectives before policy decisions are made
and I intend to work transparently and encourage engagement from students
parents and the broader community to ensure the public education of our students is in line with what we all value for today and tomorrow
As someone who doesn't specifically come from an education background
I will bring a diverse and real-world perspective to the school policy decisions in our district
I believe the district and schools has made huge strides in supporting diversity and equity for our students and community
In a world that is becoming increasingly globalized
it is essential that we prepare our children for this
Diversity and equity comes in many flavors and some of the areas the district has been focused on are offering a variety of foreign languages and cultures for students to be immersed in
additional support and resources for our English-language learners
STEAM opportunities and career exploration
I support efforts to be inclusive to all our students and community members
I am a district mom and professional bringing a very unique skillset — a proactive listener and solutions-oriented team-player
who is bringing a fresh perspective and is vested in the success and well-being of our all students
One good area of focus could be helping our kids build a holistic “success” skillset
particularly to support them better during transitions that lie ahead (move to high school/college
The whole health of a child is foundational for their academic success and there are many areas of challenge that are emerging — physical and mental well-being
social interactions and relationship building
based on the needs identified while maximizing our limited resources can have significant impact
The Village of Carol Stream is awaiting permits for a new Chipotle restaurant approved for 114 S
the restaurant will offer indoor and outdoor seating and feature a drive-through lane
It is anticipated to open in the second half of 2025
The “Chipotlane” will allow customers to pick up digital orders from their vehicles rather than ordering them at a typical outdoor menu board and paying at a drive-through window
customers place their digital orders through the Chipotle website or application with payment made during the initial transaction
A development of Chicago-based GW Properties
the restaurant was approved by the Carol Stream Village Board Oct
Proposed hours of operation are 10:45 a.m.-11 p.m
because it’s another restaurant option at the Carol Stream Marketplace shopping center,” said Tom Farace
Carol Stream’s planning and economic development manager
1-acre outlot within the planned development
anchored by Caputo’s Fresh Markets and LA Fitness
“Hopefully we’ll have the permits for this soon,” Farace said
The same holds for the anticipated new Jack in the Box restaurant taking residence in a former Arby’s
Less labor-intensive than the new Chipotle
Jack in the Box requires retrofitting the former Arby’s with interior remodeling and some exterior upgrades
One of a reported eight new Jack in the Box restaurants planned by the San Diego-based chain for the Chicago area
the Carol Stream location also should open in 2025
“They should probably be ready sooner than Chipotle,” Farace said
“I think I was maybe 2 or 3 when they left the Illinois area,” he added
Remains recovered near Carol Stream late last year were in fact human
According to DuPage County Coroner Judith Lukas
the remains have been identified as human and have been sent out to a forensic lab for DNA testing
“This is a lengthy process and may take months to receive the results
I have no other identifying information at this time,” Lukas wrote in an email earlier this month

it clearly was the right time for Mae Wee to open Lasa Filipino Café
is in the former space of 206 Brewing Company
next door to Hong Ning Filipino Restaurant & Grill
Hong Ning has been in the retail center at Schmale Road and North Avenue since 2015 after 19 years in Glendale Heights
The two eateries are a family operation. Wee owns and manages Lasa and her parents, Ernie and Marilou Wee, do the same at Hong Ning
though they can all step in to help customers at both places
a great second stop for sweet baked goods to take home
“I think we’ve always wanted to continue expansion, and we’ve explored opening something closer to downtown Chicago. But I think we kind of just wanted to stay close to each other,” said Mae Wee, who celebrated Lasa’s official grand opening on Sept. 14
“It seemed much more economical or easier to just be like
do you have extra sugar?’ And it’s really like that,” she said
moving with her parents to the United States from the Philippines when she was 8 years old — “café” means bakery
Items are made daily using fresh ingredients and no preservatives, with several gluten-free selections on the concise menu
“It’s like that corner bakery that you would walk to,” Wee said
Wee and her two bakers create Filipino-style bread rolls and rice cakes
rotating different flavors of “bibingka,” a traditional Filipino rice cake made with rice flour
Customers’ favorite is the Ube Cheese Pan De Sal
so most likely you’re able to probably get something that was just out from the oven within the last hour or two,” Wee said
Lasa also offers specialty items such as the rich Champorado chocolate rice pudding and other dessert items like coconut macaroons
Wee grew up surrounded by family in her grandfather Jose’s restaurant
opened Hong Ning in Glendale Heights before moving to British Columbia and opening a Pinpin restaurant there
Mae Wee also attended the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and before opening Lasa returned to the Philippines to study under a master baker
She believes her strongest influence comes from her family
and that’s made it so much easier to kind of put something together,” she said
Open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m.-6 p.m.
the café’s relaxing interior features painted earth tones
Wee hopes to expand the menu and add seating to the current three small
“I am trying to make this space really nice
so that people feel welcome to sit and stay,” she said
“And that is something that I think Filipinos inherently look for
Carol Stream residents can look forward to two new restaurants coming to town
Fozzy’s Bar & Grill and Barrio Taqueria & Cocina restaurants have signed leases to occupy space at The Fountains at Town Center
owner of Indvestia Real Estate Partners in Downers Grove
Indvestia closed on a purchase of the approximately 27,000-square-foot retail space along Lies Road at 1021 Fountain View Drive
built by Town and Country Homes in conjunction with the retail space
With only a liquor license and minor renovations for a cosmetic update
a stage for live music and a dining area to handle at the former Bulldog Ale House location
Mehta anticipates a November opening for Fozzy’s in the nearly 7,000-square-foot space
watched the Chicago Cubs win the 2016 World Series at the Bulldog Ale House
“It’s the first thing I think of when I go there,” Mehta said
“I felt like it was a good value-adding opportunity for the real estate,” he said
retail shopping centers — looking to improve or redevelop shopping centers that are underperforming or with vacancies and bring new life to them.”
Mehta said The Fountains at Town Center had 12,081 square feet of vacant space
The projected occupancies have since reduced vacancy to 4,196 square feet
Mehta hopes the new restaurants can increase the retail center’s profile and appeal to people throughout the village
“Without Carol Stream having a true downtown central business district and this property’s proximity to the (Fountain View) Recreation Center
I just feel like it’s going to become a place for the community to come together to gather

IL — The DuPage County Coroner has identified human remains that were found on the Great Western Trail near Carol Stream in November 2024
The remains were identified as that of a 59-year-old man from Carol Stream
Lukas wrote that the decedent's family asked that his identity remain private
In December, Lukas facilitated DNA testing to identify the remains
Lukas shared the following statement Friday
"It is important for the families to have answers and know that their loved one has been treated with dignity and care
Our deepest condolences go out to this gentleman’s family and friends
The DuPage County Coroner’s Office remains committed to supporting the living and honoring those who have passed."
The man's cause of death is still undetermined
Previous offices held: District 93 board member since 2023
I am deeply invested in the success of our district
I have been actively involved in school activities and served in leadership roles
including as PTA president and treasurer and as a parent representative on the PBIS committee
I was discouraged by the lack of open discussion and the high number of appointed members
I ran to help ensure our district had a fully elected board of individuals committed to improving our schools
I am even more keenly aware of the importance of the position and would like to continue the great work we have started
and there is still much more I would like to accomplish
such as pushing the board more into the public sphere
The role of the board regarding curriculum is laid out in our board policy
The superintendent has the responsibility to establish a curriculum review program that monitors the current curriculum and suggests changes to enhance its effectiveness
It should also incorporate improved teaching methods and materials
while remaining responsive to social changes
The board’s role is to ensure that the superintendent is carrying out this important responsibility
The board also adopts curriculum based on the superintendent’s recommendations
I believe the board should ensure that curriculum review committees have access to the necessary resources for reviewing and piloting new curricula
the board should place significant trust in the expertise and recommendations of our educators as the subject matter experts
The district has a curriculum review cycle in place that appropriately evaluates our curricula in a regular and timely manner
I think the board can make a difference by pushing for a review of our various specialty programs
the board established committees to review the dual language program
and we need to periodically do the same for our gifted and other specialized programs to ensure that we evaluate their efficacy and keep up with new research and best practices
I am obligated to listen and try to understand the perspective of all constituents
my primary responsibility is to make informed decisions that serve the best interests of our students and district
In cases where an unpopular decision must be made
it is our duty to communicate transparently and compassionately and clearly explain the reasoning behind our decisions
that does not mean we must passively accept them if they do not align with our district’s needs
working with policymakers to push for policies that better serve our schools
and advocate for what is best for students
An essential part of decision making is doing the work before meetings — reading materials
and seeking clarification — to ensure productive discussions
Policy decisions aren’t made in a vacuum; they are rooted in state law
This framework guides decisions within a board of seven distinct individuals
My fellow board members and I share a common goal of making decisions in the best interests of students and the district
this shared purpose allows me to approach differing viewpoints with an open mind and seek common ground
Many of my fellow board members have backgrounds in education
whereas my path to the board was through volunteering in schools and PTA leadership
This naturally positions me more as a representative of parents and the broader community
During recent boundary changes affecting middle school assignments
I listened to concerns from parents and students and advocated for key concessions
While some board members initially viewed these as unnecessary
they ultimately eased anxiety for impacted families
Our district’s educators and staff should reflect the diversity of our students and the community
Closing this diversity gap is a priority that the district has been actively working to improve and should continue to address
By expanding our search for candidates beyond our usual avenues
we can access a larger pool of highly qualified and diverse professionals
I recently had the honor of representing the board at middle school student council meetings
and inclusion are core values for the board and also communicated our commitment to making schools welcoming and supportive for all students
and inclusion should look and feel like in a school setting
and I expressed to students that administrators and the board want to hear from them if we are falling short
and dual language advisory committees as well as the district leadership team
This has provided valuable insight into the district’s needs and challenges
resulting in uneven enrollment across our schools and difficulty in distributing resources equitably
We addressed this issue with a boundary change that took effect this year; however
The budget is another concern as we operate at a deficit
we must learn from the experiences of other school districts and be proactive in taking deliberate actions now so we can avoid rushed measures in the future
especially during this time of uncertainty regarding the future of federal education funding
We tell our students that “attendance matters,” and we must practice what we preach
I take this responsibility seriously and have never missed a meeting and always come prepared to discuss the issues
If given the opportunity to serve another term
I will continue to work diligently to make informed decisions that benefit our students
Inspired by my recent visits to middle school student councils to talk about diversity
I would love for the board to launch a Student Ambassador program to enable students to become more involved in the decision-making process and allow them to express their opinions on matters like curriculum
This initiative would empower middle school students to take on leadership roles and give them more responsibility and connection to their education
It would also provide the board with valuable student perspectives on decisions we make that directly impact their learning experiences

Previous offices held: District 93 board member
I’ve seen firsthand the challenges and shortcomings that public schools face on a daily basis
I’ve worked alongside teachers and staff who are deeply committed to their students
but who are often held back by barriers that impede their ability to deliver the best education possible
I’ve experienced the frustration of raising concerns or requesting resources only to see these requests be delayed or not addressed
I’m running for school board because I believe I can help remove these barriers and create a more supportive environment for students and staff
I know that when teachers and staff have the tools
I have and will continue to work to ensure that the needs of those on the front lines are heard and acted upon
so that decisions can be made more quickly and effectively to improve student outcomes
A school board member plays a crucial role in setting and monitoring the curriculum to ensure it aligns with the community’s vision and values
I take seriously my role of approving educational programs that reflect the priorities and expectations of the families we serve
This includes educating myself on curriculum materials
ensuring our programs meet state standards
and providing oversight to guarantee the students in our community receive a well-rounded
By actively reviewing and assessing curriculum effectiveness
we as school board members can help maintain academic excellence while also ensuring that local values and community input are considered in educational decisions
It is essential that we as board members continuously monitor the effectiveness of our curriculum
committees of educators complete scheduled reviews of our programs to ensure that our instructional materials remain rigorous
and aligned with both state standards and the needs of our students
as state laws evolve and stakeholder values and concerns shift
the board must remain proactive in making necessary adjustments to ensure our curriculum continues to reflect the priorities of our community and provide the best possible education for all students
I love hearing from all members of our community on all topics related to the district
One of my favorite parts of being a board member is the opportunity to represent all stakeholders — students
and community members — ensuring that everyone has a voice in the decisions that impact our schools
committed to listening with an open mind and engaging in meaningful discussions
While difficult decisions must sometimes be made
my approach is always to consider all perspectives and make choices that best support our students and the future of our district
I have extensive experience working in group settings to determine policy
particularly through my background as a school social worker
where I have seen firsthand how policies impact students
This experience allows me to bring a valuable perspective to policy discussions
helping to identify potential concerns and ensure decisions are practical and student-centered
My approach in a group setting is to listen actively
and engage in open discussions to foster collaboration among board members
I use my background knowledge to raise important considerations
encouraging productive dialogue that leads to well-informed decisions
I believe this approach helps create policies that effectively support student success and align with the needs of our district
I support the district’s diversity and equity efforts because they play a crucial role in ensuring that all students receive the resources
A strong commitment to equity helps create an inclusive learning environment where every student
it is important to continually assess and enhance these programs to meet the evolving needs of our students and community
we are investing in the success of all learners and fostering a school culture that values and respects diversity
I believe I am the best candidate for this position because of my experience in education
my deep commitment to representing all members of our community
and my dedication to student success and wellness
I have seen firsthand how policies and procedures impact students
giving me valuable insight into the real-world effects of board decisions
I am an advocate for all stakeholders and welcome diverse viewpoints
using open discussion to ensure policies reflect the needs and values of our community
and working with others to find solutions that serve all students
I am dedicated to making informed decisions that promote excellence in our schools
One idea is to expand community partnerships to help students access mental health resources more easily
Strengthening relationships with local organizations can provide additional support for students who may not otherwise have access to the services they need
I believe the school board can build stronger connections with the community by expanding our listening post opportunities to occur at the public library or a local park instead of the district office
Another valuable initiative would be developing an online forum where community members can submit suggestions or thoughts for district improvement
fostering more engagement and transparency
implementing an MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) process for staff — similar to what we have for students — would provide tiered levels of support to educators and staff when needed
and effectiveness which would positively impact students
we can enhance both student and staff success while strengthening our district’s connection to the community
