but it’s made a little easier when a community comes together and bonds together to support each other,” the Rev
Phil Zilinski said during the funeral service at Fox Valley Baptist Church
stuffed animals and Easter baskets adorned the church in memory of the three boys their maternal grandfather called his “little birds.”
The maternal grandfather described the children as curious
and he was convinced they were teaching their younger brother
They often explored kitchen cabinets and emptied the contents
coming home to them was my instant cure,” the grandfather said
The paternal grandfather said the boys were the light of family members' lives and told his son and the boys’ mother that they would not be alone as they grieved their loss
“We will carry their love forward together,” he said
recalling a trip to the Lincoln Park Zoo just days before the fire
they were so beautiful,” she said of her young children
“I loved every single one of them with my whole heart.”
She thanked the community for its support and took special note of those who tried to save her sons from the fire
she wrote that Jayden was happy and energetic and “loved to run around no matter the place or time.” Kayden “was shy but loved everyone.” She said Xander was happy and caring and would say “thank you as he gave you everything he saw.”

A former Carpentersville firefighter pleaded guilty Friday to possession of child pornography
Christopher Scholl was sentenced to 180 days in jail and four years of specialized sex offender probation
He faced 40 counts of child pornography crimes
including dissemination and possession of videos
The charges stated the crimes occurred on Oct
was given credit for 14 days he spent in jail awaiting trial
Scholl was a firefighter with the Carpentersville Fire Department from 2005 until 2023
Village President John Skillman said Scholl had been placed on unpaid leave
Village records indicate that its firefighters’ pension board approved a disability pension for Scholl in February 2024
The village also paid a $150,000 settlement of a workers' compensation claim in August 2024
Scholl is to undergo sex offender and mental health treatment
allow probation workers to monitor his internet access
and have no unsupervised contact with anybody under the age of 18
A Kohl’s store on the Carpentersville side of the all-but-shuttered Spring Hill Mall will close by April, the Wisconsin-based retailer announced
The store is among 27 in 15 states that will cease operations
A Kohl’s store in Plainfield is the only other one in Illinois on the list
“While Kohl’s continues to believe in the health and strength of its profitable store base
these specific locations were underperforming stores,” the company said in its announcement Thursday
Employees have been informed and offered a severance package or the ability to apply to other open roles at Kohl’s
More than 1,100 other Kohl’s stores are unaffected
“As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy
it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams,” CEO Tom Kingsbury said in the announcement
Spring Hill Mall straddles the West Dundee and Carpentersville border
Although the Kohl’s store has a West Dundee address
Carpentersville Village Manager John O’Sullivan called Kohl’s “a great partner.”
Village officials understand the pending closure is a business decision that’s larger than just the Carpentersville location
The pending closure will leave a Walmart store as the only big-box retailer in the village
“Now we have to work on next steps,” he said
West Dundee spent $7 million to complete its purchase of the mall
which closed in March after 44 years in business
The village earlier had spent more than $3 million to buy the former Macy’s and Sears spaces there
Village officials plan to demolish the 500,000-square-foot structure and redevelop the land
The separately owned Kohl’s store and a Cinemark movie theater remain open for business
The movie theater space was part of the purchase and now is owned by the village
The village had agreed to build a new exterior wall for the Kohl’s space once the rest of the mall is demolished
West Dundee Village Manager Joe Cavallaro said
“Kohl’s has given us no indication that there’s any intention (to sell) the property,” he said
2025 at 2:14 pm CT.css-79elbk{position:relative;}Three children have died after a house fire in Carpentersville
IL — A third young boy has died following a weekend fire in Carpentersville
Carpentersville Fire Chief William Anaszewicz confirmed early Monday morning the young boy had died
which broke out in the 1700 block of Kingston Circle in Carpentersville Sunday morning
The identities of the boys have not yet been released
Office Sought: Carpentersville village president
Previous offices held: Current village trustee
Is there a particular issue that motivates you
what makes you the best candidate for the position
I am running for office because I believe Carpentersville needs change
I would like to see more diverse representation and fair leadership
I am a daughter of Carpentersville and want the best for my neighbors and our future
What is the most serious issue your community will face in coming years and how should leaders respond to it
The most serious issue still facing our community is the lack of diverse representation
It needs to start from the top with all levels of government and village administration seeking a more inclusive community input and involvement
How would you describe the state of your community's finances
What should be the top priorities for spending during the next few years
Are there areas of spending that need to be curtailed
Carpentersville's finances are currently in a good spot
We have not needed to raise taxes but have still been able to improve the infrastructure village wide
What do you see as the most important infrastructure project you must address
what project(s) can be put on the back burner
The most important projects that need to be addressed are on the east side of Carpentersville
We have already budgeted for the 2025 projects that need our immediate attention
Some of these projects relate to the common flooding areas around town
In the coming years I would like us to focus on adding more streetlights to the east side for better visibility and safety
Describe your leadership style and explain how you think it will be effective in producing effective actions and decisions with your village board
My leadership style is an open-door policy
I like to hear ideas and input from various sources to ensure that we have the best data to make informed decisions
I will ask them to bring a possible solution as well
Inclusive leadership that listens to employees and residents alike from all walks of life will guide our village in the right direction
What’s one good idea you have to better the community that no one is talking about yet
Open transparency from our board meetings to foster community engagement and promote participation
Some ways we can do this is by sharing the board meeting recordings via YouTube
as so many other government entities are already doing
This way the residents will still know what is happening in Carpentersville even if they cannot attend the meetings in person

In light of the recent fire deaths of three small brothers in Carpentersville
please check your safety exit windows and the grates covering the window wells to make sure they are not rusted shut and are functional
my husband and I were trying to move garden equipment from the basement to the patio via the safety window
The window was very hard to open due to corrosion and the hinges of the outside grate covering the window well were covered over by new siding
Make sure older children know how to use the safety window

Emergency personnel responded shortly after 9:30 a.m
Two children estimated to be under 5 were trapped and died

The deceased children’s identities were expected to be released by the county coroner
county and state officials were investigating the incident Sunday
The Fox River will soon flow freely from Algonquin to Elgin
Crews will begin work on a $1.2 million project to remove the Carpentersville Dam this month
will create a 10.2-mile unimpeded flow of the Fox River — the longest free-flowing stretch through Kane County
“May this be the model and lead domino in a movement that carries river restoration efforts progressively downstream,” said Friends of the Fox River President Gary Swick at a ribbon-tying event Wednesday to celebrate the start of the project
Friends of the Fox River representatives joined officials from the Kane County Forest Preserve District and the village of Carpentersville in a ribbon-tying ceremony to signify the upstream and downstream flow of the Fox River coming together with the dam’s removal
Officials said a free-flowing river will lead to its improved health
have seen an increase in the number and species of fish in the river
“All the science shows us that by putting it back the way it was
it actually is better for everything overall,” said Kane County Forest Preserve Commissioner Jarett Sanchez
who kayaked from a boat launch upstream to the event
Removing the dam will also allow people to kayak or canoe safely without worrying about portaging around a dam
Kane County forest preserve officials outlined the project
which involves building a causeway to divert the river’s flow to the eastern edge
Crews will then take out the 10-foot-tall dam sections at a time
allowing for short breaks for the river to settle as it adapts to the new flow
The dam is not going to come out in one day,” said Jen Rooks-Lopez
director of planning and land protection for the Kane County Forest Preserve District
Carpentersville Village President John Skillman welcomed the dam’s removal
noting the village is building a new park along the riverfront near Washington Street south of the dam
The 3-acre park will be completed in the fall of 2025
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Kane County Forest Preserve District approved a contract for the dam’s removal in July
The forest preserve district owns the dam and the entire shoreline on both sides of the river for two miles upstream
the IDNR and forest preserve district entered an agreement to remove the Carpentersville Dam and the Fabyan Causeway at the Fabyan Forest Preserve in Geneva
IDNR agreed to pay the cost to remove the dam and the causeway
Removing the Fabyan Causeway was completed in November 2019 for $1.4 million
Work on the Carpentersville Dam was to follow in 2019

It's important to find common ground in order to reach a consensus
One must take into account other's perspectives and opinions
Compromises are sometimes necessary to move forward to solutions that can be mutually agreed upon
What makes you the best candidate for the job
I have had a long-standing commitment to making a positive impact and have consistently demonstrated dedication to the betterment of our community
I have lived in Carpentersville for over 25 years
I was appointed to the village of Carpentersville Special Events Commission in late 2020
I have been involved in bringing events to the community such as Fall Fest
As a passionate advocate for community service
I have been actively involved in volunteer work and have always put people first
I was honored by the village of Carpentersville as the Community Service Volunteer of the Year
I will continue to prioritize the values that matter most to us: fostering strong community bonds
and ensuring that every resident’s voice is heard
I believe in building a future where everyone in our village feels connected
I would like to have a town-hall meeting with residents to hear their ideas as to what they would like to see in the village
Input from the community can help inspire projects that can benefit the village
No injuries were reported from a vehicle fire inside the attached garage of Carpentersville house early Tuesday morning
Firefighters were able to keep the blaze from spreading to the main residence of the home after they were called to the one-story
single-family house on the 100 block of Carpenter Boulevard just before 4 a.m
Firefighters were able to help residents and a dog exit the house safely
The residents were allowed to return to their home after the fire was extinguished and investigators cleared the scene
Dundee Township's 21st annual Shop With a Cop event at Walmart in Carpentersville provided underprivileged children the opportunity to have presents
53 families and 155 children were able to participate in the event
Children could shop for presents totaling $150
and if they needed warm clothing they were provided with coats
in addition to a gift card to Village Fresh Market in Carpentersville
said the event can make a big difference for families during the holidays
“We know that it touches them in ways that exceeds our expectations sometimes,” Hernandez said
and Harper College police departments and civilian volunteers participated in the event
Office sought: Carpentersville village board (Vote for 3)
Occupation: Retired Postmaster; also working part-time at Ace Hardware in Carpentersville
Previous offices held: Currently serving on the village’s audit and finance committee as well on the planning and zoning commission
I see the most serious issue are jobs in our community
Our malls are disappearing because of Amazon
so we need good jobs in manufacturing as well as stores
Our village needs to look to where we can build nice medium to small manufacturing jobs
And hopefully manufacturers can look at our community to build here
and bring a future to our youths in our town
That they can make a living and hopefully a home here in our community
I do sit on the audit and finance committee
and Mayor Skillman has our village in good shape financially
I was totally impressed when we had our audit and finance meeting back in November
I know we have been spending moneys in the community I live in
also in the area of Old Carpentersville as well
I believe we should stay the course and finish these areas that are older
to do the repairs and help our homeowners out
to keep them updating and repairing their homes
you tend to get more involved in your community
I believe I have answered this question in my statements above answers
and the studding in the homes are not up to code
the electrical wiring is totally out-of-date
and old fuse boxes need to be updated to breaker boxes
I believe our village may look at contractors
that can give the homeowners a break in price
if we can assure the electrical contractors to get more homes for work
The contractor would get security of a high volume of homes
plus give the citizens a price they can afford to update their homes
The greatest commodity of a village is the people that live there
I would ask for a few days before handing out my decision
This way I could go through the pros and cons
I would rather see as much information I can before jumping in
This has been working as well already in my role in planning and zoning
I have had the experience in union matters
I was a union rep before I became a postmaster
because not everyone sees the situation from the same angle
And sometimes you have to make an equitable decision for both sides to be comfortable
I have love for this town to be successful
you have to love this town and put the time into it
Nor is it a steppingstone to proceed into a bigger picture to get into politics
By helping the citizens with upgrading their homes
Everyone probably wants to bring in more businesses for our town
and their frame of mind or their thoughts of the bad things of the city erase
We gave them a helping hand to improve what they see every day
not some water fountain in a park somewhere

To maintain a balanced budget without raising taxes
Taxes haven't been raised in over eight years but with rising costs that will become a challenge to keep them low
especially when we are investing in infrastructure upgrades
I will fight to keep taxes low because the last thing our residents need
Carpentersville is currently in a good financial position
When I first moved here I lived on the east side and later moved to the west side
It became very clear that the east side doesn't get the same services as the west side
We need to invest in better infrastructure to make our roads safer and address the flooding issues while maintaining a high level of public safety
Sometimes it could pay off if we hire specialized external contractors who can do certain jobs faster and cheaper
Residents need basic services like clean water
and public safety more than aesthetically pleasing spaces
the village board should prioritize infrastructure assessments and plan for sustainable investments in maintenance and upgrades
This could include seeking state and federal grants for infrastructure
implementing preventative maintenance programs
and collaborating with engineers to ensure long-term
In my 30-year career in the private sector
I've held several management positions where I used a democratic leadership style
I believe honest discussions will lead to the best decisions
There are rarely open discussions at the village board meetings
A culture of respectful debate with inclusive decision making and transparent communication will help improve our community
with my roots in the Netherlands where I grew up in a blue-collar family
I have a different view on many things including politics but am very open-minded
I am more of a listener than a talker and value everybody’s input
Carpentersville is our home and I want to make it better for all of our families
I think it would be a good idea to divide Carpentersville into districts for board representation
It’s quite possible that after the election four trustees live in the same west side subdivision and one in a neighboring division
we run the risk as a village of becoming stagnant if the current leaders are in their positions too long
Local politics isn't a place for career politicians
The Fox River is adapting to a new flow through Carpentersville as crews continue to work on removing a dam
Work crews are expected to be out of the river and the dam removed by Halloween or Nov
director of planning for the Kane County Forest Preserve District
“We’re to the core of the dam itself,” she said
Work on the $1.2 million project to remove the dam
funded by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources
The dam’s removal will create a 10.2-mile unimpeded flow of the Fox River
the longest free-flowing stretch through Kane County
Time-lapse videos of the dam removal can be viewed on the Kane County Forest Preserve District’s YouTube channel
Officials have said a free-flowing river will result in an improvement in its health
Rooks-Lopez said crews removed the concrete portion of the dam sections at a time and allowed the river to settle in between
which officials believe was built between 1839 and 1850
is constructed of river stone and braced with timbers
“That’s made it a little more difficult to clean it up,” she said
ranging from small pebbles to larger boulders
Rooks-Lopez said some of the larger boulders will be incorporated back into the river
The forest preserve district is also looking for other district properties where the stones can be used
The forest preserve district will pay to extend a canoe and kayak launch north of the dam along the eastern edge at Fox River Shores
Volunteers also have relocated about 1,000 river-filtering mussels that were stranded as crews disassembled the dam
She said crews should be finished before the Stratton Lock and Dam at the Chain of Lakes is open later this fall
“We want to make sure we are out of the way before those water levels start to come back up,” she said

died at Loyola Medical Center at 12:36 a.m
according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office
The Kane County Coroner's Office on Monday announced it is conducting an independent investigation into the causes and manners of death for the children
"We are conducting further tests and toxicology
which will take a minimum of several weeks to yieldresults
We are working closely with the Carpentersville Fire Department and affiliated local andstate agencies to gather all relevant facts," said Kane County Coroner Monica Silva
said she was with Kayden when he died and "felt his heart stop and watched as he took his last breath," according to NBC Chicago
"... (I) had to sit there and listen as the doctors told me that they wouldn't be able to save him anymore," she told NBC Chicago

Previous offices held: Village president since 2017
My vision for Carpentersville includes improving aging infrastructure
I am dedicated to advocating for and representing all residents
ensuring everyone has a voice in shaping the future of our community
As village president over the past eight years
I have been driven by a vision to improve efficiency and accountability in local government
We have strived to effectively service all of our residents — prioritizing community investments
and I remain committed to building on this momentum
I remain committed to making our village the best it can be
I proudly served over 30 years with the Carpentersville Fire Department
My education includes a Master’s degree in Management and Leadership
a Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science Management
and a graduate of the National Fire Academy Officer Program
Our greatest challenge in the coming years is the need to develop long-term economic development that will support the future needs of the village and its residents in the areas of infrastructure improvements
and the increasing demand on village services such as public safety needs
The key issues I see in Carpentersville include infrastructure upgrades
with ongoing road and utility projects like the village’s recently completed lead pipe replacement program in Old Town
ensuring business growth beyond retail while using incentives responsibly; and the development of affordable housing
alongside fostering community inclusivity in a diverse population
Leaders should respond with proactive infrastructure planning
prioritizing funding for roads and utility replacement
Balanced economic policies can attract businesses while maintaining responsible land use
including our partnership with Habitat for Humanity
such as increasing the number of police and firefighters on the street each day
The village of Carpentersville maintains a structured
The Audit and Finance Commission meets bimonthly to oversee fiscal matters and ensure responsible management of the village’s finances
Carpentersville has maintained a balanced budget with no tax increases
Staff was directed to keep the tax levy flat once again and we are reducing the property taxes for over $2 million
directly saving Carpentersville residents and businesses money in fiscal year 2025
Local governments rarely return money to taxpayers
but through careful planning and sound fiscal management
Carpentersville also maintains a modest reserve fund to offset major capital expenses
such as large infrastructure or facility upgrades that have been ignored for far too long
These reserve fund reduces financial strain on residents when these projects arise
we proactively secure state and federal grants
such as funding for the lead pipe replacement in Old Town the last few years which made Carpentersville one of the first 100% lead-free communities in Illinois
The village is currently focusing on several critical infrastructure projects to enhance community well-being and support growth
The most important project that we are in the planning stages for is the installation of a redundant water supply system to supply our residents on the west side of the village
all residents and businesses on the west side will be affected
This project is going to take a lot of time and resources to execute
but we must ensure our residents have the ability to have a safe
and uninterrupted supply of drinking water throughout all areas of the village
We are currently working hard on our Old Town Area Improvement Project
Besinger Drive Reconstruction project which is funded partly by a $1.8 million federal grant
aims to resurface and reconstruct sections of L.W
My leadership style has always been transformational leadership
I think this style is well suited for a village president as this approach allow me to focus on inspiring and motivating the community
and other elected officials toward a shared vision
which fosters a sense of unity and progress
This allows me to communicate a clear vision for the village’s future and works to engage all those involved toward a common goal
I pride myself on receiving input from diverse group of people and ensuring our village’s actions reflect the needs of the community
I work hard to be empathetic to the needs of our residents and our business owners
I am extremely open to innovation and change and to do what is best for our community and our village to bring us into the future
I pride myself on holding myself and village staff accountable
I want our residents to know that their goals are my goals and together we will make the future Carpentersville even better for generations to come
East Side Revitalization Program: The village is undertaking a revitalization project along the Route 25 corridor
This project will enhance the area with upgraded roadway lighting
and improved landscaping throughout the corridor
we will also add new sidewalks and crosswalks to better serve the east side of Carpentersville
we expect new developments at the Meadowdale Shopping Center
bringing fresh business and dining options to residents
Our goal is that this investment in the Route 25 corridor will foster collaboration with existing businesses
helping them grow and improve their own businesses as well
the iconic Carpentersville water tower will receive an artistic makeover
featuring contributions from local artisans
The design will include significant symbols of Carpentersville’s history
and memorials to the Korean War and President JFK.
