It's not normal to be a head coach in the NFL at the age of 73 It is perhaps unprecedented for a franchise to hire a head coach who will turn 74 during the season after said coach took one year off from coaching everything about him that makes him not normal it's the exact thing the Raiders have been missing since the early 2000s and that's why he's not the right man Carroll has been teaching at USC, the school he won National Championships with and Rich Eisen got a chance to sit in on one of Carroll's final lectures Eisen said Carroll's classroom brought him to tears "I have never witnessed in two hours what I witnessed in Pete Carroll's class Eisen stated that Carroll's class was about teaching "being true to one's self and being open and sharing with others about your world and your abilities to connect with yourself and show emotion and being comfortable with knowing who you are it can be a powerful way to connect with other people and create a team environment." Eisen went on to say that students spoke about their experiences in this class One student stated that he was the victim of a car accident that likely should have taken his life that student stated the class changed his life as he was struggling with reconnecting with the world Another student stated the class helped him find his love for music again as he had lost it while being a musical major on the verge of graduation All those lessons Carrol taught, those are the one's he's teaching the Raiders right now Congratulations Raider nation, you have found your head coach. responsibility to carry that name in a way that would make my family proud they can say my name without it triggering a connection to something awful This is why you have not met anyone named Adolf Hitler Smith If your daughter told you she was engaged to a guy named Ted Bundy you would insist on a serious background check the name Hussein means “good” or “beautiful.” But in 2003 Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was convicted of crimes against humanity and was sentenced to death by hanging Obama’s political opponents would often refer to him by his full name hoping the “Hussein” baggage would influence voters Back when the United States of America was still somewhat united parents would frequently name their child after a popular president My grandfather was Grover Cleveland Norris I knew some men named after Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt I can’t say that I’ve met anyone named after Lyndon Baines Johnson Richard Milhous Nixon or William Jefferson Clinton Nor does it seem that are very many Georges or Baracks these days According to recent surveys of popular baby names Joe and Donald are not high on the list either Names are also important if you are selling a product and compiled a list of the most trusted brand names the top-ranked brands are generally believed to be the actual product how many times have you asked for a Kleenex instead of a facial tissue I’m sure the company that makes Puffs fights that battle every day Kleenex is said to be the most trusted brand name in the nation Customers believe they can always count on it My dermatologists have recommended Vaseline for healing skin for many decades I’ve never heard them use the term “petroleum jelly.” The pain relievers ibuprofen and acetaminophen come in various forms and brand names But some marketing geniuses have done their jobs We are far more likely to ask for an Advil or a Tylenol Coca-Cola committed one of the most notorious marketing mistakes in history The company basically trashed one of the most successful trusted brands in the world and tried to convince us that “New Coke” was better than the original We voted “NO” with our taste buds and within months plain old “Coke” resumed its rightful place on top of the cola world Sometimes I have a craving for a grape Coke Also high on the trusted brands list are Band-Aids and Scotch tape is transparent adhesive tape Seattle Seahawks head coach, is now the head coach with the Las Vegas Raiders a franchise that has a ton of ties to the USC football program Pete Carroll is set to continue teaching his class there at the university Then you factor in the amount of USC players that have played for the Raiders over the years and even the guys that are on the roster right now like Isaiah Pola-Mao The Raiders have a few USC players on their rookie mini-camp invites and even some UDFAs that they have signed Defensive backs Greedy Vance and John Humphrey played at USC last season and are joining the Raiders as UDFAs being given a chance at a roster spot for the 2025 season Raiders invite USC WR Kyle Ford to rookie minicampKyle Ford was a wide receiver for the USC Trojans and had a notable six-year college football career Ford was a five-star recruit from Orange Lutheran High School Ford joined USC in 2019 but faced challenges with injuries and limited playing time in a competitive receiver group Ford accumulated 88 receptions for 1,190 yards and nine touchdowns Ford didn't play in 2020 due to the COVID season but played enough football in the other five seasons to have some pretty good experience entering rookie minicamp and could serve as a weapon on the practice squad if all goes well He has some tools that Pete Carroll and the Raiders coaching staff likely love Even though the Raiders are in Las Vegas, and were in Oakland before that, it still feels like they have more ties to USC than both the Los Angeles Chargers and the Los Angeles Rams (WZTV) — A former FBI electronics technician has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for sexually exploiting minors McGuire announced Monday that Justin Carroll was convicted by a jury of one count of sexual exploitation of a minor one count of coercion and enticement of a minor two counts of receipt of child pornography and three counts of transferring obscene material to a minor under 16 Carroll engaged in sexually explicit online conversations and exchanged images with three 14-year-old girls he met through social media and chat platforms Prosecutors said his crimes came to light after one of the victims mailed him a Valentine’s Day package at the FBI office where he worked Authorities later uncovered explicit images on Carroll’s social media accounts and cellphone as well as images of him on devices belonging to the minors Despite receiving an email from one girl’s mother alerting him to her age Carroll continued to communicate with the victim FBI Special Agent in Charge Joseph Carrico added you will be Toby Olynyk had the other goal for the Cavaliers Join senior media production & journalism major Christy Hall "Turning the Page: The History of the Camden-Carroll Library," at 5:30 p.m in the Adron Doran University Center (ADUC) Theater This compelling documentary delves into the nearly 100-year legacy of Morehead State’s Camden-Carroll Library highlighting its architectural evolution and the dedicated individuals who have shaped its role as a hub of learning and community I am driven to note — for my own peace of mind for the possibility that it may resonate with some readers — how terribly predictable this century of days has been Donald Trump campaigned on a platform that made it clear to all who were willing to listen that he would rule in a lawless He talked about retribution against anyone who had ever tried to hold him to account from politicians and reporters to government servants; he and his allies lied that the United States was being invaded by immigrants and that all manner of cruelty was justified in repelling them; he literally vowed to rule like a dictator his first term had demonstrated his complete and unalterable obsession with his narrow personal interests as opposed to anything resembling the public good — the most catastrophic example being his willingness to cause excess deaths in the hundreds of thousands because he thought that sounding the alarm on covid and taking appropriate precautions would hurt his re-election chances though: Trump’s 2024 campaign and his many declarations of war against democracy and the rule of law were themselves rooted not simply in his first presidency and a desire for re-election but very much grew out of his January 6 insurrection and related illegal efforts to overthrow the 2024 election results and our democratic order he spent the last four years both in fear of being punished for his crimes against the nation and doing everything he could to subvert our politics and our justice system to prevent being brought to justice he pressured most GOP elected official to accept the Big Lie that Trump had actually won in 2024; that Democrats had stolen the election through suborning millions of illegal immigrants to cast votes; and that January 6 was not an insurrection but a completely legal and justified effort to make good his claim on the presidency he didn’t run a campaign so much as continue his insurrection with the goal not to govern as a president to transform the Oval Office into an anvil against which he could smite his enemies while corruptly hoovering up billions of dollars from corrupt dealings Donald Trump could not have made it any clearer that he was an unrepentant enemy of the United States that he would not hesitate to act illegally to maximize his personal power over the federal government and that undermining and destroying the rule of law was essential to his vision for America Flash forward three months and change from his inauguration and the pace of his attack on America democracy and freedoms has been as frenzied as it has been wholly predictable he pardoned the January 6 insurrectionists thereby endorsing their criminality and insurrectionary spirit as his own and unleashed the Department of Justice to drum up false charges against those he considers his enemies He has blackmailed leading law firms into committing to the MAGA cause and leading universities into complicity with a right-wing cultural purge The DOGE initiative led by Elon Musk has wrecked vast segments of the federal government that had been put in place on behalf of the American people by previous democratically-elected governments Trump has decimated much of what the citizenry had built for itself to advance the common good from a Department of Education that helped children otherwise left behind by their local school systems to the capacity to serve veterans who have protected our country to medical research and institutions that safeguard the public health more examples of his assault on the country we have all collectively built as if they were actual enemies of America; crucially he has denied them due process rights in a way that directly threatens the rights of every American citizen against arbitrary punishment by the government so that his war on immigrants has become inseparable from a larger war on the rights of Americans he has set about wrecking our NATO alliance while taking the side of Russia in its genocidal war against Ukraine by deranged talk of annexing that country and making it the 51st state He has threatened our collective and individual wealth by implementing a chaotic extremist tariff regime that has severely undermined the world’s faith in the U.S.’s role atop the world financial system and raised the prospect of recession if not a far more dangerous destabilization of the world economy and other influential members of civil society directly in the line of fire of Trump’s authoritarian onslaught began to exhibit a strange and sinister disposition Rather than calling out the utter predictability of Trump’s actions and condemning them as a breach of his pledge to uphold the Constitution — the insane executive orders security by siding with Russia against Ukraine and our European allies — they instead began endorsing the supposed inevitability of Trump’s successful seizure of illicit power They began to behave as if he were already more of a dictator than a president that such a state of affairs was simply to be endured the rest of us) had best accommodate themselves to this new reality They both tacitly acknowledged the primary lesson of the last several years — that Trump is a man who wants to be a dictator and will try to be a dictator — and skipped right ahead to assenting to Trump being a dictator Close the Camps Protest, San Francisco. July 2, 2019. Photo: Thomas Hawk/Creative CommonsThis piece was previously published at The Hot Screen I am driven to note — for my own peace of mind for the possibility that it may resonate with some readers — how terribly predictable this century of days has been as opposed to anything resembling the public good — the most catastrophic example being his willingness to cause excess deaths in the hundreds of thousands because he thought that sounding the alarm on covid and taking appropriate precautions would hurt his re-election chances though: Trump’s 2024 campaign and his many declarations of war against democracy and the rule of law were themselves rooted not simply in his first presidency and a desire for re-election he didn’t run a campaign so much as continue his insurrection extremist tariff regime that has severely undermined the world’s faith in the U.S.’s role atop the world financial system and raised the prospect of recession and other influential members of civil society directly in the line of fire of Trump’s authoritarian onslaught began to exhibit a strange and sinister disposition Rather than calling out the utter predictability of Trump’s actions and condemning them as a breach of his pledge to uphold the Constitution — the insane executive orders security by siding with Russia against Ukraine and our European allies — they instead began endorsing the supposed inevitability of Trump’s successful seizure of illicit power They both tacitly acknowledged the primary lesson of the last several years — that Trump is a man who wants to be a dictator and will try to be a dictator — and skipped right ahead to assenting to Trump being a dictator If you wanted to be extremely charitable, you could say that a desire to protect what they had, avoid provoking Trump, and batten down in the hope of better times motivated the collaborationist spirit (M. Gessen has an insightful column drawing from their experience of the Putin regime in Russia of what motivates people to go along with a corrupt government) But no such charity should be extended to those in the Democratic Party who not only counseled accommodation but talked about the U.S.’s alleged hard shift to the right and about a non-existent massive defeat for the Democrats as if everything the party stood for had been fully rejected by the American people some even argued that the Democrats had spent too much time emphasizing the defense of democracy and demonizing Donald Trump’s authoritarian aims when in reality the only failure in this regard was the failure to make concrete for the American people how much they stood to lose — in terms of freedoms in terms of personal security — if a confirmed insurrectionist like Trump were to assume the Oval Office It was jaw-dropping for high-ranking Democrats to view the victory of a man who literally tried to overthrow the U.S government — including by the incitement of a violent mob whose members likely would have killed many of said Democrats had they been able — as a time for compromise rather than unbending resistance to the lawless regime that was so obviously about to erupt The horror of such political misjudgment registers even more powerfully today when Trump has for a hundred days acted exactly like that man who tried to overturn the election results more than four years ago and whose goal is clearly to attain dictatorial power over the American government But while many of our elites have failed us miserably ordinary Americans have not been nearly so quick to accept Trump’s misrule as normal Recent public opinion polls that show sharply declining support for Donald Trump — including in the areas of immigration and the economy which have arguably previously helped provide a floor to his popularity — are deeply heartening particularly so early in his administration and in the face of so much elite-level surrender While I would not go so far as to say that Americans have collectively awakened to the full scope of his authoritarian ambitions I would say that they are starting to notice and object to their consequences The more that Americans can see the through-line between the reality of Trump’s first term and his return to the White House to seal the authoritarian deal the faster and more effectively will they be able to organize and act to counter him We are not starting from zero here; we can look at Trump’s history to grasp how much danger we’re in; we are under no obligation to give him the benefit of the doubt Trump tried to overthrow our democracy and the rule of law four years ago; unchanged and now unchained he has returned to office to finish the job Subscribe now Fordham University will award honorary doctorates of humane letters to two transformative Catholic higher education leaders: Joseph M president emerita of Dominican University and president of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU) The commencement speaker award-winning film and television actress and Fordham alumna Regina Hall will receive an honorary doctorate of fine arts at the ceremony Commencement will be a homecoming for Father McShane who served as the 32nd president of Fordham and ushered in a new era for the University through his inspired leadership He was a tireless ambassador for Jesuit education who boldly pursued his ambitions for Fordham while remaining personally humble and focused on students. the number of endowed chairs more than tripled the University established more than 400 new scholarship funds His legacy of new construction projects at the University is exemplified by the Joseph M which formally opened at the Rose Hill campus in early 2022 and by the new Fordham Law School building and residence hall—McKeon Hall—that opened in 2014 at the Lincoln Center campus His presidency saw Fordham grow from a respected regional institution to a national university with a strong international reputation Father McShane served in leadership roles for 25 years at Fordham including his 19 years as president and his previous six years as dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill He also served on the religious studies faculty at LeMoyne College in Syracuse he spent five years as president of the University of Scranton where today he serves as superior of the Scranton Jesuit Community Father McShane has served on the boards of numerous civic and educational organizations and Jesuit universities Carroll served for 27 years as the first lay president of Dominican University in Illinois providing leadership that propelled dramatic change throughout the institution: a doubling of the full-time faculty a four-fold increase in the operating budget and the creation of a state-of-the-art science building Carroll also led the process of adopting the current name of the university News & World Report for social mobility as Carroll bolstered the university’s commitment to educating first-generation students nationally recognized advocate for the rights of undocumented students and the cause of immigration reform Earlier in her career Carroll worked at Fordham before going to Dominican as president in 1994; it’s sounding like he was the right person for the job The Raiders are a franchise that has been begging for someone to come in and change the culture and few have shown the ability to lead a locker room like Carroll over the course of his college and professional coaching career As many are aware, Carroll still teaches a college course at the University of Southern California and NFL Network’s Rich Eisen shared a story last week about a class of Carroll’s he recently attended Eisen raved about the class and described it as something like he has never seen “I’m telling you… [the kids] were all giving testimonials to Pete who probably doesn’t want this to be said about him that he has changed their lives,” Eisen said “And I know we’re talking on Raider Nation Radio in Las Vegas if the Raiders are buying what Pete is selling like these kids in class…” “Here is a man we’re talking about how old he is I can tell you he related to a group of 20 because he was talking about how they have helped him learn more about his mantra… They were a connected body I can’t recall the last time I was in room where there was over 100 people and we were all connected,” Eisen continued Eisen said the Raiders have someone to lead the organization Maxx Crosby is just playing for one guy after another after another All the other Raiders who have been there through the churning and have been looking for somebody to sell them something worth buying and they know it’s going to last and if you want a culture changer which the Raiders were in desperate need of x: @raidersbeat Rich Eisen select one team with the most individual draft picks that got me excited, the Raiders would be in the running for that distinction." Wrote Edholm. "Running back Ashton Jeanty should be a star Don't be shocked if receiver Jack Bech follows suit and perhaps quicker than you might think." "The Darien Porter pick was a home-run swing at attempting to address the cornerback need Caleb Rogers and Charles Grant help the O-line Even a few of the Day 3 picks -- such as JJ Pegues and two FCS standouts Tommy Mellott and Cam Miller -- had me clapping at home." Dating back to July 7, 2024, Carroll has gone deep 25 times Carroll has done that in 85 games -- which roughly extrapolates to a 47-homer pace over the course of a full season And Carroll is swinging much faster than he did the past two years (Bat-tracking data is available starting in the second half of 2023.) Granted, Carroll’s bat speed prior to 2025 was nothing to sneeze at. His average swing was north of 73 mph in both 2023 (73.2 mph) and 2024 (73.7 mph) But he’s gone to another echelon this year bumping his average bat speed up to 75.2 mph which puts him in the top eight percent of MLB hitters That’s a particularly notable figure given that Statcast defines a “fast” swing as anything 75 mph or above Exactly half of Carroll’s swings this season have met that threshold Carroll has sacrificed some contact to achieve that result -- his whiff rate has spiked to 28% after sitting at 21% across 2023-24 -- but he’s more than made up for it … the ball is jumping off his bat like never before Carroll’s average exit velocity, hard-hit rate and barrel rate have skyrocketed, with the outfielder ranking in the 93rd percentile or better in all three categories While those metrics can be quite noisy in small sample sizes it’s easier to buy into the improvement knowing that his surge began last year Carroll’s batted-ball breakdown since 2023Average exit velocity // hard-hit rate // barrel rate The fact that Carroll has generated multiple batted balls with exit velocities north of 115 mph an area to which most hitters rarely -- if ever -- venture Carroll’s 115.7 mph lineout on March 28 exceeded his previous career high by nearly 2 mph He topped that with a 115.8 mph triple on April 6 Carroll also hit the two hardest home runs of his career (111.8 mph and 110.7 mph) on April 4, both off the Nationals’ Hardest-hit batted balls of Carroll’s career: Max exit velocity can be incredibly telling revealing a lot about a player’s raw power in a single batted ball If a hitter is suddenly pushing their max exit velocity to new heights it’s usually an example of real physical improvement -- because that kind of jump doesn’t happen by accident It’s not just how Carroll is hitting the ball that’s making a difference Carroll has embraced a similar approach. In 2023-24, the outfielder’s rate of pulled air contact (fly balls, line drives and popups) sat around 16%. This year, it’s up to 24.4%, as you can see on Baseball Savant's new batted ball profile leaderboard it’s another tweak that has carried over from the second half of last season when his pulled airball rate soared to 23.9% -- up from 11.8% prior to the All-Star break Carroll hasn’t lost his ability to fly on the bases -- he’s still one of the fastest players in the game Ky) - Motorists should expect a rolling roadblock on Interstate 275 eastbound (from Indiana to Kentucky) near the Carroll Cropper Memorial Bridge on Monday the rolling roadblock will take place between the hours of 7:00 p.m switching traffic from the left lane to the right lane at the bridge approach to the main span to provide a safe working area for crews to switch traffic The majority of T-1 steel repairs have been completed on the bridge This traffic switch will allow crews a safe area to continue working on the expansion joint repairs KYTC will provide further updates once the floor beam repairs begin Aligned with Team Kentucky’s mission to ensure a safe transportation system for the traveling public the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) began steel repairs in mid-January on the Carroll Cropper Memorial Bridge which spans the Ohio River between Kentucky and Indiana Motorists should expect lane closures through late summer 2025 This bridge repair project follows a federally required inspection of older bridges across the country built with “T-1” steel – a high-strength quenched and treated steel known for being highly amenable to welding and machining Potential issues had been found in other states with certain types of welds During a 2023 inspection on the Carroll Cropper bridge engineering firm Michael Baker International tested 600 welds and identified 15 locations that would need future repairs but posed no immediate safety issues Consultants and KYTC engineers collaborated to create a repair plan to prevent potential fractures and address these findings These repairs will ensure the bridge can be safely traveled well into the future KYTC bridge engineering analysis showed that other repairs – unrelated to T-1 steel issues - would be needed for an expansion joint and floor beam A reduced weight limit and lane restrictions were put in place as a precaution and to prevent further damage The expansion joint and floor beam repairs have now been added to the T-1 steel project to expedite those repairs An expansion joint is a component of the bridge deck that allows for thermal expansion and contraction due to changes in weather to prevent concrete from cracking KYTC will lift the emergency vehicle weight limit imposed last December A reduced speed limit of 55 miles-per-hour is in effect within the project area until repairs are finished Overweight and over-dimensional vehicles remain prohibited due to current lane restrictions is contracted to perform the $3.6 million project on behalf of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet the overall project has an expected completion date of summer 2025 KYTC implemented weight limits for emergency vehicles and temporary lane restrictions on the I-275 Carroll Cropper Memorial Bridge While the bridge remains safe for passenger vehicles a recent inspection found deterioration in some of its steel The weight reduction will not impact commercial vehicle traffic due to semi-trucks having more axles to distribute the weight Overweight Over-Dimensional vehicles are not permitted on the bridge at this time due to current lane restrictions and duration of work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur. The program provides grants to Rising Sun-Ohio County School Corporation teachers Eighteen students statewide will serve on the committee Your Hometown Radio Station playing Collin Raye -
