a massive slugger in their organization is hitting the cover off of baseballs at the Triple-A level and there's no obvious reason why he shouldn't be in Minnesota's lineup right now He was a four-year player at Oklahoma State (2018-2021) who only hit 23 home runs in just shy of 600 NCAA plate appearances but it wasn't enough to get him drafted So McCusker suited up for the Tri-City ValleyCats (based in Albany he eventually started to tap into more power he hit .433 with 17 home runs and a 1.302 OPS he signed a minor league contract with the Twins McCusker hit 14 homers in 46 games in the low minors in '23 hit 19 of them across Double-A and Triple-A last year and has gotten off to a red-hot start to 2025 McCusker is slashing .326/.394/.629 for the St He's also among the leaders in average exit velocity using his large frame to crush the ball to all fields This is now a @carson_mccusker stan page. He hits his first ever grand slam. It's his 6th home run of the season for the man that came in 2nd in Triple-A in exit velo at 95.9. (home run was 102.6). He came in 2nd in the IL in slugging (.673) & OPS (1.073) & T3rd in HR. McCusker turns 27 this month and isn't considered a prospect strike out a fair amount (30 percent K rate this season But with the Twins' offense struggling the way it has there isn't any strong argument against adding him to the 40-man roster and giving him an opportunity in the big leagues McCusker isn't some savior who will fix Minnesota's season but it's hard to see the downside of giving him a chance to provide a potential spark having lost four in a row after a four-game winning streak indicated signs of life When Matt Wallner suffered a hamstring injury in mid-April it was understandable that the Twins didn't turn to McCusker It was still rather early in the Triple-A season at that point it becomes less and less defensible that McCusker hasn't gotten a call-up especially when you consider some of the players that are on the roster instead of him Willi Castro) have forced the Twins to call on reinforcements multiple times They called up star prospect Luke Keaschall They've had to turn to Triple-A players like DaShawn Keirsey Jr as well as trading for a couple players (Jonah Bride and Kody Clemens) who had just been designated for assignment by their previous big-league team Keirsey and Clemens are the two outfielders currently on Minnesota's roster instead of McCusker has gone 2 for 29 at the plate this season Clemens is 1 for 8 with three strikeouts since being acquired a week ago Because Keirsey at least has value defensively and as a pinch runner Clemens is probably the most egregious example of a player who should not be blocking McCusker from the big leagues He turns 29 shortly and has a decent-sized track record of not being an MLB-caliber hitter Clemens has hit .195 with a .606 OPS and 105 Ks to 22 walks he has the versatility to play both outfield and multiple infield spots but there's no reason why the Twins should've traded for him instead of simply promoting McCusker Rocco Baldelli could undoubtedly make the lineup work with McCusker in right field or at DH Wallner is expected to remain out for much of May with his hamstring strain The Twins have a guy who looks a lot like a right-handed version of him down in Triple-A and they've decided to dig in the MLB scrap heap instead Carson McCusker's MLB debut becomes more and more overdue The content on this site is for entertainment and educational coordinator and outside linebackers coach in 2022 That very quickly changed for Schwesinger once the new Bruins assistant started watching him "Any chance he had to basically prove me wrong told the Beacon Journal in a phone interview on May 2 'I'm not even sure what that kid is doing on that side of the ball That player who annoyed Malloe the special-teams coordinator went on to become one of the best players for Malloe the defensive coordinator two years later finally got his starting opportunity as a senior That starting opportunity turned into an All-America season, which turned into Schwesinger being drafted in the second round (No. 33 overall) of the NFL draft by the Browns said the player he is as he embarks on an NFL career is the same pain-in-the-rear-end scout teamer who was blocking all of "damn kicks" three years ago The only difference between the two is opportunity "That's something that I think I knew two years ago Schwesinger spent two seasons as essentially still a special teams star and part-time linebacker only 83 of his 306 total snaps in 2022 were on defense and only 17 of 213 were defensive snaps in 2023 The breakthrough finally arrived in Schwesinger's final season who was promoted to UCLA's defensive coordinator by new coach DeShaun Foster when he replaced Chip Kelly in 2024 finally getting tired of having him standing next to him on the sidelines 'Why is this guy standing next to me on the sideline?" Malloe said "So we started to create packages [for him] but we eventually moved [Oluwafemi Oladejo] to get Carson on the field I think what everybody had the pleasure of watching was just how instinctive he is and how smart he is." The move paid off for both Schwesinger and Oladejo Both ended up as second-round draft picks in April with Oladejo going 19 picks after Schwesinger at No led the Big Ten in tackles (136) and the Bruins in interceptions (two) he credited Malloe for much of that success "I think all of that helped grow my game and get me better at football," Schwesinger said really gave me my opportunity to play that I’ve been waiting for Just having the belief and faith in me to be the player that they knew I could be." Malloe refuses to take credit for Schwesinger's talent although it was he — as both outside and inside linebackers coach during his time with the Bruins — who provided him with the opportunity He said the real reason for Schwesinger's success is something that can't be taught — instinct Malloe said Schwesinger fine-tuned that instinct which he believes will help his former player with the Browns as well by coupling it with an acute understanding of what teams are doing before the snap but he understood where his assets were," Malloe said So what he tried to do was study so much of the pre-snap I want to say there's a TikTok of [former NFL All-Pro linebacker] Luke Kuechly and he's talking about if you can study just formations you can actually call the play out before the play So what I think of instinctual football player I would attribute some of that to film study and being a student of the game So he was looking halfway there before the play even started." That included a wreck with Ryan Preece. One of the favorites to blame in the NASCAR Cup Series now Ryan Preece was not happy with Carson Hocevar after being wrecked out of the Texas race He called him out in his comments after leaving the infield care center “I apologized to him and his guy, same with my guys, right?” Hocevar said to Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports. “Just got in there and started to slide up, and he got to the right rear, and I was already crossing somebody’s wake and got tight from him on my door and the car in front. “I mean I’m out of the gas and have wheel, and I just didn’t predict to be in that spot, to panic, or to have to change directions, you have to predict it, and I didn’t, I just didn’t predict he would get there if I’m being honest. That’s on me, I wrecked myself, right?” I mean, what more can he say in this situation? The wreck happened, and he has to live with the consequences of that, as far as how Ryan Preece and other drivers treat him now. A couple of years ago, it was all about Ross Chastain. Now, Carson Hocevar is the new driver everyone points at when things go wrong. In this case, Preece has a right to be upset, but it’s just the usual cycle of a young driver making young driver mistakes and being called out. Another disappointing finish today. Carson Hocevar has had five finishes of P30 or worse this season and six finishes of P24 or worse. Today, he was P24 coming off of a top-10 at Talladega. Hocevar is showing speed. He won the pole for the race earlier in the weekend. That has to count for something. We know his raw speed is excellent. He still has to work on his overall race craft and awareness in the Cup car, though. He has to start getting better finishes. Hocevar only has two top-10s on the year. Honestly, he’s underperformed. I still think he has a chance to really improve this season. The pole award surprised me a lot since it happened at Texas and not a superspeedway. Carson Hocevar will be fine. But if he wants to salvage this season, he has to start getting better finishes. Little and big mistakes are holding him back from getting the finishes he deserves. That didn’t stop GM Andrew Berry from selecting two defenders with the team’s first two selections. DT Mason Graham was considered by almost everyone among the top five prospects in the draft (top 3 for many) Only once was Schwesinger selected in a mock draft (collected by Mock Draft Database) before the 4th round The hope is that Schwesinger will join Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah to give Cleveland one of the most dynamic linebacker pairings in the NFL We will have to wait to find out the future of JOK but Schwesinger will help with some of the problems on the defensive side of the ball with or without Owusu-Koramoah Pro Football Focus had the Browns as the worst tackling team in the NFL last year. (News 4 & Fox 11) — The suspect in a deadly shooting at a Carson City bar on Wednesday night has been identified. De Lecs Smith, 26, has been charged with open murder, carrying a concealed weapon without a permit and battery with a deadly weapon. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) received 911 calls of a shooting on Telegraph Street between Carson Street and Valley Street around 9:45 p.m. on April 30. On arrival, deputies located a victim in the street outside of a bar. Paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene. The victim has been identified as a man who was born in August 1978. His name has not been released. Preliminary information indicated the victim and suspect may have exchanged words in the bar, however, no physical altercation was reported. Authorities say both the suspect and the victim exited the bar into the street where the suspect shot the victim multiple times. Authorities say Smith initially ran from the scene before police arrived, but he called the 911 Center and turned himself in just before 10:30 p.m. Smith is being held without bail and is expected in court on Monday, May 5. a United States Army post in Colorado Springs The FBI arrested an Army infantryman stationed at Fort Carson on federal cocaine distribution charges Wednesday evening The arrest comes four days after a federal raid early Sunday on an underground Colorado Springs nightclub that authorities said resulted in more than a 100 people detained on immigration charges According to a federal criminal complaint, Juan Gabriel Orona-Rodriguez, an Army staff sergeant, appears to have an “ownership/leadership role” in a company called Immortal Security, which provided security for nightclubs, including Warike, the underground nightclub raided on Sunday when Orona-Rodriguez’s superior officer learns he is running the side security business and tells him to stop unless he has approval Authorities were able to get a search warrant for Orona-Rodriguez’s text messages and assembled several conversations he had they allege were related to dealing in cocaine and a gun was one of 17 active-duty soldiers present at the time of the Sunday raid.  “So you need a whole full and the 7 g right?” reads one message to Orona-Rodriguez from an unnamed contact — and Orona-Rodriguez responds The criminal complaint says that in drug transactions controlled substances are often referred to by weight when ORONA-RODRIGUEZ refers to ‘two half’ he is referring to two half ounces which I know to be a common measurement of cocaine,” reads the complaint.  the unnamed person offers to deliver an ounce of cocaine to the Warike Many of the amounts outlined in the criminal complaint deal with relatively small amounts of cocaine Colorado Springs Police were aware of the club having generated "numerous" 9-1-1 calls The text messages indicate Orona-Rodriguez was both a buyer and seller of cocaine at different times At one point a customer messages Orona-Rodriguez to purchase a half ounce “likely at Warike” where he was providing security for $500 and Orona-Rodriguez writes back “Your [sic] killing me smalls,” according to the complaint an undercover DEA agent purchased half an ounce of cocaine from Orona-Rodriguez near his residence in Colorado Springs 2024 outline proposed firearms transactions with people without legal status to be in the U.S including pistols with extended clip magazines It’s unclear from the criminal complaint if the transactions were completed The purchaser was trying to pay with cash and cocaine which Orona-Rodriguez indicated would not work Orona-Rodriguez appeared briefly in federal court Thursday afternoon Dressed in camouflage cargo pants and a light green t-shirt he was advised of his rights and answered a series of yes or no questions and have a detention hearing on Tuesday. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted on all charges The raid on Warike was a joint effort by local and federal agencies Attorney General Pamela Bondi said the underground club was frequented by “Tda and MS-13 terrorists,” referencing South and Central American gangs.  Authorities said cocaine and methamphetamine were seized Photos posted on social media by the DEA show several weapons and drug paraphernalia the DEA says were seized at the club The paperwork in Orona-Rodriguez’s case is the most thorough accounting yet made public appears to be the only person facing charges from the Sunday raid though scores were taken into immigration detention Orona-Rodriguez is assigned to the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team He’s been in the service for nearly nine years Colorado Postcards are snapshots of our colorful state in sound. to change directions “I just didn’t predict that he would get there Hocevar would finish 24th after earning his first career Cup Series pole When asked to describe their college experience in one word “Adventurous.” It’s a word that captures not only her academic journey but also the intentional way they navigated spaces that once felt out of reach I’ve tried to branch out of my comfort zone and do things that I couldn’t afford growing up,” she said and sexuality studies (GWSS) major with a concentration in digital studies has spent her time on campus driven by both bold exploration and deep community connection From studying abroad across multiple continents to interning with a drag storytelling organization Carson has sought out experiences that have allowed her to build Carson created a self-designed internship with Drag Story Hour an international organization that uses drag performance to inspire children to read and embrace diversity “I reached out to all of the Drag Story Hour chapters and I found one that aligned with my goals,” she said took her on as a curriculum development intern “That was a really important moment for me,” she said “It kind of changed the trajectory of what I was going to do after college.” One of Carson’s many academic interests lies in children’s literature specifically its intersections with accessibility and working-class representation I want to study how working-class representation is constructed — and how it’s coded a lot of times within nationalistic rhetoric,” she said “I would like to go out and create books that working class children and families desire and enjoy.” As a student leader with the Office of Accessibility and Disability Resources made campus digital content more accessible and worked to ensure that posters and social media posts included proper alt text and image descriptions They also advocated for accessibility as a core design principle “Accessibility is for everyone,” she emphasized “The best philosophy is to look at the person who has the most needs and build around that — then everyone ends up being accommodated.” Her passion for disability justice emerged through personal experience and I realized I was disabled in a couple different ways,” she said “Through my own experience and learning from my friends who are also disabled I was able to advocate more in the classroom.” That advocacy extended beyond campus — while working for the Iowa Black History Research Collective Carson made accessibility training resources for her team ensuring that their work was inclusive of Black disabled communities But Carson’s time at Grinnell hasn’t just been defined by advocacy or academics — it’s also been full of unexpected joy One of their favorite discoveries was learning to play the harp “I’d never taken a musical instrument lesson before,” she said They also found joy in creative hobbies like crocheting and bedazzling tote bags with friends in the Stonewall Resource Center It’s been a while since I’ve done anything other than scarves I’ve pretty much been making scarves as a way of fidgeting and focusing in class.” Their time at Grinnell also gave them a chance to reconnect with and deepen their Jewish identity — something they didn’t  have access to growing up but I didn’t really get to explore what Judaism meant to me culturally Through Grinnell’s Jewish student community and mentorship from Rabbi Sarah Brammer-Shlay participating in holidays like Rosh Hashanah but I can read it — and I just find it joyful to sing with other people and set a good intention for the week.” they found a profound extension of this exploration in GWS295: Love Lust & Laughter: Jewish Life in Vienna “We visited synagogues in three different cities including the Dohány Street Synagogue in Budapest which was absolutely stunning,” Carson said “It was cool to see one that was visible from the street and loud and proud about Jewish identity Carson’s intellectual curiosity has led her far beyond Iowa They entered the Grinnell College Global Entry Program and studied abroad their very first semester in Costa Rica specifically a culture that is really near to my family Carson has been involved in multiple organizations and initiatives and conducting research on Black churches and community activism in Iowa Black history isn’t centered in classes,” she said “I really wanted to engage critically with Black history.” Her coursework in GWSS has helped her develop a framework for justice grounded in care “It encouraged me to interact with the world lovingly,” she said drawing from authors who imagine new futures grounded in mutual aid “Learning from different feminist authors has encouraged a lot of optimism in me,” she said “You can make a kinder world by practicing now.” When asked what advice they would give her first-year self then smiles: “Anything you’re curious about — try it.” That spirit of curiosity has guided her through four years of exploration “I’ve gotten more comfortable expressing myself,” she said “And I think I’ve learned to help other people fulfill their goals and dreams Carson plans to pursue a master’s degree in Children’s Literature They are already imagining what comes next — and dreaming up a future that makes more space for care The Independent Student News Site of Grinnell College 'Today' show host Daly dated Jennifer Love Hewitt in
