INDIANAPOLIS — Stephanie White knows exactly what it's like to play in front of hometown fans
White played her rookie year in the WNBA for the Charlotte Sting
then returned home to Indiana as she was traded to the Fever ahead of their inaugural season in 2000
And the first game White played in a Fever uniform was at her alma mater
The Fever played their first preseason game at Mackey Arena on May 20
one of White’s franchise players is getting the same treatment
The Fever will play the Brazilian National Team at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, the home of Caitlin Clark’s alma mater
Clark’s trip to Iowa marks the return of a player who not only changed the Hawkeyes’ fortunes but shook up women’s college basketball altogether
“I remember it was so cool for me to be able to play for the Fever in Mackey Arena,” White said
“And I can imagine it's going to be equally as cool for Caitlin to go back and play an exhibition
Tickets for the game sold out in under 45 minutes when they went on sale in February
and resale prices are going for nearly $450
Over 15,000 fans will be screaming for the former two-time National Player of the Year
who captivated the state and nation as a Hawkeye
who brought her hometown team to back-to-back national championship games in 2022 and ‘23 and left as the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer
“I honestly haven't been back to Iowa City a ton since I left a year ago,” Clark said. “I’ve only been back a couple times, once for a football game and once for my jersey retirement
who played for Missouri from 2015-19 experienced that fandom firsthand
even before Clark played her first game in Carver-Hawkeye Arena
Cunningham’s Tigers headed to Iowa City for the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament in 2019
back when Megan Gustafson (now playing for the Las Vegas Aces) was leading the Hawkeyes as National Player of the Year
The Missouri grad has mostly good memories of Iowa City — other than that’s where she ended her college career with a loss to Iowa in the second round
“And especially when you go to a college town like Iowa City
to get behind someone so great like Caitlin Clark
I just think there's a lot of positive and excitement around women's basketball
so I'm not salty or anything,” Cunningham joked
The lack of air conditioning in Carver-Hawkeye Arena
there’s no air conditioning in Carver-Hawkeye
and usually they don't play basketball games there in May,” Clark said
I don't know what the humidity is looking like
especially on the second day of a back-to-back in the preseason
calls for a little extra planning on the coaching staff’s part
“I didn't know there's no air conditioning,” White said
so we're going to have to work through that and make sure that you stay hydrated.”
White and her staff will be prioritizing working out lineups
Neither will other popular Fever players and projected starters like Kelsey Mitchell
“We know what the goal of preseason is,” White said
but it's to see a lot of different players to make sure that we can really evaluate
to make sure that we can start to build our rotations
And so this is more of an evaluating kind of phase for us

IOWA CITY — Caitlin Clark was about to exit
“I’d might as well launch one.”
that last shot — that last moment — came from a step behind the shot in which Clark set the NCAA women’s basketball scoring record on Feb
“It was what everybody wanted to see from Caitlin in this arena,” Indiana Fever Coach Stephanie White said
Clark hadn’t played in the Fever’s first preseason game (Saturday at Indianapolis against the Washington Mystics)
six rebounds and five assists as the Fever routed the Brazil National Team
She connected on 6 of 10 shots from the floor
15,000 Hawkeye-turned-Fever fans went home satisfied
One tailgating crew of eight set up camp in a parking lot
maybe a half-mile from Carver-Hawkeye Arena
Their wardrobe colors ranged from the familiar black and gold
It’s been a Caitlin Clark town for more than five years
It has become a Fever town since the 2024 WNBA Draft
“They’re going to be cheering for me
They’re going to be cheering for the entire team,” Clark said before the game
who are hoping for a whole lot more than a 20-20 record and a first-round playoff exit
Clark is one of only five players on the current roster that played in Indianapolis last season
“Caitlin’s attention to detail has stood out to me,” White said
White played at Purdue from 1995 through 1999
winning three times in four trips to Iowa City
“I have fond memories of this place,” White said
“(Iowa) had a lot of great players ..
a lot of them were from Indiana and the Chicago area ..
Tangela Smith had long arms at the front of that press
It was a nightmare for Boilermaker guards like me.”
The Fever scored the first eight points (in less than a minute)
Clark is hopeful that this Carver appearance is more than a one-time deal
“I’d love to come back here every year,” she said
“I’m thankful to the WNBA and the Fever for wanting to play a game here
“And you’ve got to give the Brazil team credit
Several members of the Brazilian team approached Clark for autographs shortly after the final buzzer
White said that showcases like this “allow people that don’t have access to a WNBA arena to experience WNBA basketball.”
Iowa’s first post-Clark team went 23-11 and reached the second round of the NCAA tournament
Virtually the entire roster was courtside Sunday
“I’m just going to sit back and watch the show,” Iowa Coach Jan Jensen said last week
I’m going to be sitting right behind — my family has seats about three rows behind our bench
so that’s where we kept them for this game
“So it will be kind of fun to just see Caitlin in action and not have to have any say in anything
Just kind of watch and observe and probably just stand in awe.”
The Fever open the regular season May 17 at home against the Chicago Sky
that’s our goal,” Clark told ESPN’s Holly Rowe postgame

In the initial moments of her return to Iowa’s Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Caitlin Clark drifted left off a screen and rattled down a 3-pointer from the center court Hawkeye logo. It was her first possession of her preseason debut, and her first shot back inside the arena at which she captivated college basketball as she wrote a new chapter of history for women’s sports.
“I love to compete at the end of the day,” Clark said pregame. “But also, this is a building I’m very comfortable playing in.”
Clark broke the NCAA’s all-time scoring record in Carver-Hawkeye, earning a stamp on the arena’s hardwood in her honor. Her No. 22 sits on the exact spot that she shot the record-breaking basket from – a forever reminder of the one-of-one player that thrilled the sold-out crowds of Iowa City before her Fever career.
Now, back on Iowa’s campus to kickstart her second year campaign, Clark dazzled the crowd once again. She recorded 13 points, five rebounds, and two assists in the first half to lead the Fever to a 70-point total at halftime.
Clark was on a mission to put on a show for her Iowa City fans, stating before the contest that she told her Fever teammates that Carver-Hawkeye would be the loudest arena they’d ever played in. Her first bucket earned a pop of energy from the crowd, and that reaction snowballed with each consecutive basket by Clark.
But those cheers rained down for her teammates, too. Kelsey Mitchell knocked down a 3-pointer directly following Clark’s opening basket, and Carver-Hawkeye erupted with the same enthusiasm it had for Clark.
“I think it’s really good for our fans that might not have a chance to go see us play in the [WNBA],” Clark said of WNBA games played in college arenas. “…I think it gives them a great opportunity to come and cheer for us, and also see a team they’ve probably watched on TV quite a few times.
“I’ve told my teammates they’re going to be here cheering for me, yes, but they’re also going to be here cheering for you and our entire team. And I think that’s what’s so great about these fans is they really rally around the entire team, it’s not just myself.”
Clark finished her preseason debut with 16 points, six rebounds, and five assists. She made six of her 10 shots – 60 percent from the field, including 67 percent from beyond the arc.
But the most memorable of Clark’s moments on Sunday afternoon came at the end of the third quarter as she raced up the floor with under a minute remaining in the period. She took three dribbles, eyed up her signature logo, and launched a 3-pointer from beyond it.
Her 36-footer didn’t touch the rim as it sailed through the bottom of the net.
As she embarks on her second year as a pro, Clark clings to her time at Iowa.
“Those are some of the best memories I have in my entire life,” she said of her days playing in a Hawkeye uniform. “So just soak it in and enjoy it.”
She gave Iowa City something to enjoy on Sunday, leading a ferocious Fever charge to a 108-44 victory in their second preseason contest. The reigning Rookie of the Year returned to her alma mater and gave her fans more memories in the arena that is now synonymous with her name.
Clark sat down on the bench following her final minutes of action, and holding out her hands in a heart, she showed her love to the people that supported her on the campus that built her.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — As soon as Hadley Carsjohns and Maya Conover heard Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever were coming to Iowa
they were telling their parents to get tickets in any way possible
told IndyStar from the line to get into Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday afternoon
“I was begging my mom for tickets,” Carsjohns
Those tickets immediately became hard to come by. The Fever’s game against the Brazilian National team sold out in under 45 minutes
wasn’t an option either — those ticket prices were sky-high

I can’t remember the first Raymond Carver story I read
when I began dreaming of a writing life in earnest
male millennial with a liberal arts degree) Carver has always been there
emotion and sensation and judgment all happened in the open
For as ‘real’ as Carver’s stories had felt
As quivering masses of protoplasm, we all filter reality through the same set of feeble sensory organs
so any attempt to portray being as we understand it bears intrinsic limitations
the style at issue is merely shorthand for confining a story to reality
universally accessible and recognizable palette with which to paint
Seasoned writers (most of whom are not formal educators) need some kind of durable paradigm within which they can critique writing mechanics
why people participate in formal writing workshops
Any references I make to “Carver” encompass the body of work published under his name
Masterful as Carver’s work is, his mien undeniably reflects dated attitudes, norms, and conventions. Enthusiasm for his writing can, unfortunately, wind up propagating a certain type of unbearable literature bro
realism overall—somewhat easier to dismiss out of hand
To be clear: I am not trying to reduce the importance or beauty of Carver’s work whatsoever; I couldn’t even if I tried
Carver’s oeuvre is a curriculum unto itself
my point is this: if the writers who cut their teeth on Carver want to make a strong case for the enduring relevance
they should consider looking instead to Lucia Berlin
The parallels between Berlin and Carver are striking
Born within two years of one another, both were hetero, goyish, and raised working-class. Before writing landed each a vocation, they both made ends meet by shoveling shit. Both wrote short fiction in the 70s and 80s about life in the 50s and 60s
Both had an affinity for Chekhov’s unsparing interpersonal conflict
Both resided in and wrote about the Pacific coast
Both drank themselves out of happiness and health
Comparing the two writers isn’t novel; they themselves recognized the affinity. “Yes I love Raymond Carver’s work…” Berlin wrote in a letter to her friend, the poet August Kleinzahler. “I wrote like him before I ever read him
Berlin’s stories portray a certain type of lonely
small-city pathos endemic to the 20th century’s back-nine
her characters drink and smoke and fuck and frequently wage quiet war against their own impulses
But whereas Carver uses subtlety and implication to emphasize stories’ negative spaces
Berlin’s characters openly acknowledge emotional damage and struggle and desire
playing with rhythm and fragment and punctuation to mimic the syncopation of thought and speech and memory
Rather than discuss such a specific subject in the abstract
let me illustrate by comparing a short story written by each author
Caver’s “So Much Water So Close to Home” stars Claire
Stuart and his friends found a young woman’s corpse floating in a river
the men waited until their excursion’s end to report the murder
The story begins after Stuart returns home
Claire’s misgivings expose the depth of both her unhappiness and Stuart’s abuse
Berlin’s “Tiger Bites” is the story of Lou
a pregnant young mother visiting family in South Texas for Christmas
her second husband has abandoned her and her toddler son (by another man)
who arranges for Lou to cross the border into Mexico for an illegal abortion
Profoundly affected by her experience at the clinic
Lou reevaluates her life and decisions before returning home
Both are narrated in the first-person by a women (a rare turn for Carver)
Both protagonists are young mothers to boys
Both stories deal with sexual violence against women
Both works conspicuously feature a thematically weighty river
Let’s take a look at three aspects of craft that
Carver: “In a few minutes we cross Everson Creek and turn into a picnic area a few feet from the water
The creek flows under a bridge and into a large pond a few hundred yards away
There are a dozen or so men and boys scattered around the banks of the pond under the willows
Berlin: “We came to the bridge and the smell of Mexico
Oranges and Delicados and urine…Church bells
carrying pinatas and jugs of rum.” (Note: ellipses appear as-written)
Though both renderings of place are delivered in first-person narration
the fragmented nature of Berlin’s has a memetic quality of emerging sensory observation—ironic as Carver’s is the story told in an unfolding present-tense
And whereas Carver restricts setting to visual details
But I don’t think searching for extenuation is as useful for our purposes as evaluating what’s on the page
In “So Much Water…” if we didn’t have Carver’s entire body of work featuring many instances of incredibly similar “dirty realism” detachment
it would be fair to read Claire’s flat affect as her voice
Carver’s protagonist just feels flatter
rendered in a somewhat patronizing manner when viewed next to Berlin’s
I also think it is fair to say that Lou has a much more nuanced sense of interiority than Claire—her voice and what she notices and how she reflects upon her world add up to a richer sense of character
Carver: “Stuart asks [Claire] to see a doctor and she does
secretly pleased at the doctor’s solicitous attention.”
Berlin: “It was his arrogance and authority that labeled him as doctor
Carver: “A door opens at one side of the chapel and I look up and for a minute the parking lot reminds me of a meadow
But the silence in the car was impenetrable
it’s almost impossible to make an apples-to-apples comparison
but each of the above examples is a good representation of the two writers’ respective styles
the protagonist encounters an older woman reacting to her young son
note the two characters’ relative life on the page
She gives me the feeling that she is always judging
judging[…] She looks at me steadily from over her glasses
my little man?’ she stoops and puts her arms around him
She looks at me again as I open the door to leave
She has a way of looking at me without saying anything.”
She had swooped [my toddler son] Ben up in her arms
teetering around with him in the dining room
the two of them crashing against side boards and china closets
and had enough junk on her bed to amuse him for months.”
a certain flatness in Carver’s work is unquestionably purposeful
so a valid reading of the supporting characters’ tonality in “So Much Water…” is that Claire’s depression and anxiety and dissociation alienates her from others
There’s strong evidence for this on the page
if we’re using Carver as a stylistic standard-bearer
I don’t think it’s fair to exculpate him from the responsibility of imbuing supporting characters with dimension; as writer David Gates is fond of saying: Every character should believe they are the story’s protagonist
we find beautiful simulacra of existence as we understand it with virtually no bar for the willing suspension of disbelief
conflicts—we buy it all without question and in doing so
The differing means of accomplishing the feat only proves that there is plenty of room within realism for creativity and imagination and style
what I’ve presented is a false choice: there’s no reason for preferencing one story or writer over the other
especially anyone seeking to improve their writing
We all learn by emulating those we admire and anyone seeking to build a strong foundation would be well served by standing on either set of shoulders
writing this was an exercise in frustration
reading Berlin’s work for the first time almost felt like learning a secret history of the world Carver portrayed—the one where I’d spent so much time when I was young and in love with fiction and just wanted to be a better writer
I had to wait until I was in my thirties and mature enough to recognize the enormity of the bias I brought to bear on what was supposedly real
but the point stands: Carver’s star began rising before he was 30; he enjoyed more of the right attention and access and therefore exposure and resources in his lifetime than Berlin
She’d been dead for over a decade by the time widespread respect was well and truly put on her name
by which point Carver had already been canonized
Who knows how things might’ve been if she’d been mentored by Gordon Lish or welcomed into Iowa’s embrace or found herself the fulcrum of a zeitgeist
As a there-but-for-the-grace-of-God lit bro, Carver was catnip for my younger self. But demographically speaking, MFAs aren’t my territory—women comprise the majority of creative writing BFAs and MFAs
I can only imagine how tiresome it must’ve been for the young women in my early workshops to hear endless Carver evangelism
in rooms where eager writers are beginning to hone their skills in earnest
are getting excited about committing their world to prose
Lucia Berlin is who we talk about when we talk about realism

She was cleared to play Sunday but she's expected to top out around 20 or 25 minutes
A sellout crowd enthusiastically cheered for the Fever during the first half of Sunday's game
Here's a look at Clark's statistics through the first two quarters
More: Caitlin Clark final stats in Indiana Fever game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City
IOWA CITY - Iowa women’s basketball season-ticket holder Bridget Schlegel is due to have a baby on May 9
sat with her two-year-old daughter Jane on the steps of Carver-Hawkeye Arena on May 4 as fans began packing the building to see a preseason game between the Indiana Fever and the Brazilian National Team
"Jane's first Hawkeye game was at five days old
so she's a huge Hawkeye fan," Schlegel said
Schlegel grew up in Iowa City and said she has been going to women's basketball games for years. She said Clark's work off the court, including with the Caitlin Clark Foundation
has reinforced her role as a model for women and girls like her two daughters
we didn't have such big role models," Schlegel said
but it was not nearly the craziness that it is now
They would give these tickets away for free
so it's just insane that you have to fight for tickets."
Schlegel was one of many mother-daughter duos who came to Carver to take in Clark and the Fever
Hundreds of fans eagerly awaited the opening of the doors more than two hours before the game was set to tip
grilled hot dogs and hamburgers and enjoyed a sunny spring afternoon
men's basketball and women's basketball season-ticket holders
came from Cedar Rapids to catch the Fever in action
It was their first professional women's basketball game
"It's exciting to see Caitlin and how much she's improved and what she's grown and how this professional team is different from the college team," Rick Mason said
Clark was a "once-in-a-lifetime player for this university," he said
Mason officiated basketball for years and said every time they came to a game
Clark did something he had never seen before
"There just will never be another Caitlin Clark," he said
traveled almost three hours with her sister from Mason City to see Clark in action in person again
The season-ticket holder and University of Iowa graduate has been coming to games for more than a decade
"It's been so fun to see how Caitlin and all the Hawkeyes over the last few years have really elevated this program," Einertson said
You don't just recruit good players through luck."
Her college roommate even played women's basketball at the university in 1999

Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever played to a raucous Carver Hawkeye Arena Sunday afternoon
Fans had been waiting for months to see the former Iowa legend take the court in Iowa City along with her Fever teammates
How could the game possibly live up to the expectations
Clark hit her first three-point shot of the game to lead a Fever 8-0 run to start the game
Many wondered how Caitlin would look in her first preseason action of the season
became a little nervous when Clark was held out of the Fever's preseason opener Saturday night with what was listed as a leg injury
But there was no doubt the Clark would be ready to roll against Brazil on Sunday
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that Clark played a total of 18 minutes in the 108-44 exhibition win
and 5 assists and shot 4 of 6 from three-point range
But there was one shot that Caitlin took that would leave fans shaking their heads in amazement
Clark pulled up for a three BEHIND the logo that marks where she set the NCAA scoring record on February 15
The Gazette reports that when asked after the game why she took the shot
"Why not?" It was the exclamation point on an amazing return to Iowa City for both Clark her Fever teammates
You can tell this is going to be a special team
Just look at the way her teammates join her during the postgame interview
The Indiana Fever have one more preseason game this Saturday in Atlanta
They tip off the regular season on May 17th as they host Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky in Indianapolis
Clark's return to Iowa City lived up to the hype!\nRead More

The Gazette reports that when asked after the game why she took the shot
The Indiana Fever have one more preseason game this Saturday in Atlanta
but Carver Caitlin was Carver Caitlin and 15,000 fans joined the Indiana Fever in having a great Sunday afternoon
treasonous people in Carver-Hawkeye Arena Sunday
Navy blue and bright red shirts with Caitlin Clark’s name and No
22 were as prevalent as the black and gold attire representing the Iowa Hawkeyes
and brought thousands of longtime Indiana Fever fans with her to replace her old
Many of the 15,000 in attendance who attended the Fever’s 108-44 win over the Brazilian national team are Iowa fans who have made room in their wardrobes for a piece of Fever garb or five
“I didn’t know what the percentage of the Fever gear and the Hawkeye gear would be,” Clark said
At least a few folks wore shirts proclaiming their allegiance to the Indiana franchise starting Feb
That happens to be the day Clark announced she was declaring for last year’s WNBA draft
and Iowans started making mental plans to become tourists in Indianapolis
“My wife and I have half-season tickets for the Fever,” said Jason Thomas
He and wife Stephanie Thomas traveled all the way to Iowa City for Sunday’s game from … Swisher
Nancy Hanson was wearing an especially sparkly Fever shirt that looked homemade
She got it at a craft sale in … Cedar Rapids
Nancy and her husband Bob Hanson went to Las Vegas last summer on their honeymoon
Guess who they saw play basketball while they were there
there were plenty of people here who did come a great distance to see Clark fill Carver’s baskets with bombs once more
A woman from Atlanta got on a plane for Cedar Rapids Saturday
and will be back at Eastern Iowa Airport Monday for a 5:30 a.m
on Long Island said “This is amazing
Carlsen isn’t an Iowan or Iowa graduate
Nor is she a fan of the reigning WNBA-champion
“I’m a Fever fan,” she said
Carlsen does hope to get Liberty tickets this season
But it’s for when the visiting team is … you know
it was an exhibition rather than a competition
This wasn’t the best Brazil could offer
since the first player drafted after Clark last year was 6-foot-7 Kamilla Cardoso of South Carolina via Montes Claros
had 15 points and 17 rebounds against Iowa in her team’s NCAA championship-game win last year
It was kind of a shame it wasn’t another WNBA team that supplied Indiana’s opponent
just to show fans at their first ‘W’ game the depth of the league’s talent
Given how many Fever games people here watched on television last season
it probably wasn’t an education they lacked
with her perennial flair for the dramatic in this gym displayed even in a game decided by 64 points
Her 36-foot shot with 26 seconds left in the third quarter pleased everyone in the arena immensely
why not?” Clark told ESPN’s Holly Rowe after the game
Clark left the game nine seconds later when new Indiana coach Stephanie White called a timeout to give her the curtain call that perhaps was louder than her pregame introduction
several Brazilian players got autographs from Clark and had her pose for photos with them
not bright red or navy blue or black-and-gold
They had never seen another player with such a passionate following
“I think it’s hard to put into words,” Clark said
“It’s almost overwhelming to a point
very thankful to come back to a place that continues to support me.”
a what should be a very exciting second pro season starts for Clark and her fans
She has a better coach and better teammates than she did as a rookie
The TV ratings for her games don’t figure to drop this summer

IOWA CITY − When the moment calls for something special, especially at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Caitlin Clark has been known to deliver
Clark put on a dazzling comeback show to steal an in-state rivalry win
With a Big Ten regular-season title on the line in 2022, at the end of Clark’s sophomore year
Iowa sold out Carver-Hawkeye for the first time since 1988
she put on a show to remember – going 8-of-11 from 3-point range and scoring 38 points with 11 assists in a 104-80 rout of sixth-ranked Michigan
Carver’s fans have been emotionally invested in Clark for that reason
She always rose to the occasion when it mattered most
That also included ESPN’s "College GameDay" visit to end the 2023 season (and an unforgettable walk-off 3 to beat No
2 Indiana) and the night she was set to break Kelsey Plum’s NCAA scoring record – and merely scored a career-high (and arena record) 49 points
she put on a show in her first professional game in Iowa City – while simultaneously kicking off her second season in the WNBA
"Something about this gym," Clark would say afterward with a smile
Clark scored on a sweet slide-step 3-pointer 32 seconds into the Indiana Fever’s May 4 exhibition game – from just inside the tip of logo Herky’s beak
six rebounds and five assists in just under 19 minutes of action as Indiana rolled to a 108-44 rout of the helpless but spirited Brazil National Team
Knowing the gravity of her Iowa City return
Clark wore her black-and-gold "Bruce Lee Kobe" Nike shoes "that I would have worn literally for every big game in my career at Iowa," she said
Clark was a blast to watch in her first game in Iowa City in 13½ months
since the Hawkeyes escaped West Virginia in the round-of-32 in the 2024 NCAA Tournament
But one of the cool things about this day evolved at sold-out Carver-Hawkeye was how the fans in attendance roared for all the Fever players
Clark said she told her teammates before the game
“it's going to be the loudest arena you’ve ever played in.”
when Kelsey Mitchell lobbed home a 3 early in the first quarter
the place went nuts – with a reading of 116 on a press-row decibels reader
just a tick lower than 117 for Clark’s first 3
The noise continued as new acquisition DeWanna Bonner swished a deep ball from the left wing
After Clark checked out for the first time
the crowd was still completely engaged for the five Fever players not wearing No
Sydney Colson flipped a behind-the-back pass to Natasha Howard for two
as if Kate Martin had just found Gabbie Marshall for a splashed-home 3-pointer in 2023 or 2024
There is a lot of unfounded talk nationally that all these “new” WNBA fans are all about Clark
While it’s true that Clark is the driving force of exploding interest
the Sunday afternoon crowd at Carver showed by the thousands that these fans (dressed in a pretty even mix of Fever red and Hawkeye gold
which pleased Clark) have become Indiana Fever fans as well – just like they loved Kate and Gabbie and Monika and Hannah and Syd and everyone else along the way
“One of the best parts about the fan base is it’s not a one-player thing,” Clark said before the game
“It was the same thing during my time at Iowa
and they loved every single girl on the team
whether they played 40 minutes a night or whether they never got in the game.”
Bringing this Fever team to Iowa City for a game that doesn’t count in the WNBA standings – the real wins and losses start to get tallied May 17
when the Fever play Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky – was a stroke of genius by new team president Kelly Krauskopf
there was plenty of money to be grabbed here
and those in Iowa happily swiped their credit cards for $60 to $200 face-value tickets that sold out in 15 minutes
But this was a move that demonstrated the passion of Hawkeye fans who have become Fever fans
And a day like this can’t help but keep those folks in the fold going into a WNBA season that should see Clark and the Fever contending for a league title
Indiana at +340 has the second-best title odds behind the New York Liberty’s +220
This Iowa City stage hit the mark for women’s basketball in our state and in the WNBA
the who’s-who turned out Sunday – including Marshall
recent Hawkeye assistant coach Raina Harmon
former coach Lisa Bluder and the current Iowa women’s roster (which was introduced during an in-game break
with Kylie Feuerbach conducting an in-game interview and coach Jan Jensen getting the mic later)
This was another celebration of not only Clark but the impact of Iowa women’s basketball
“These are the moments that you kind of just want to stay in for forever," Clark said
"I'm certain I’ll be looking back at a lot of pictures and videos from today.”
Clark was at the forefront of this fun Fever day
She didn’t plan on playing a ton of minutes
after missing Indiana’s first exhibition game the day before with “leg tightness” – but she looked great against Brazil
completely revved up for her second pro season
she’s been adding muscle to help her prepare for a physical WNBA regular season and postseason
she made sure to give the fans what they wanted in an unbelievably lopsided affair
At one point midway through the third quarter
she launched an attempt from the “22” logo – the spot from which she broke Plum’s scoring record
Clark got an inbounds pass late in the third quarter off a rare Brazil make
She quickly looked at the clock and saw it read 30 seconds
she knew coach Stephanie White was about to pull her for the day
So Clark took three dribbles and just after crossing halfcourt pulled up in front of ESPN's Ryan Ruocco and Rebecca Lobo and probably 3 feet behind the No
"WOW," Ruocco exclaimed as she released the deep shot
"You bet!" Ruocco roared with his signature call
knowing that even in a game that meant very little
she gave her fans (and the ESPN audience) another unforgettable experience at Carver-Hawkeye Arena
that’s like two-for-one range,” Clark said
Might as well launch one.’ That was pretty fun
You don’t always realize how far back you are
I had to give the fans a little something.”

Former Iowa star did not play in Saturday’s exhibition opener due to an injury to her left leg
For the first time her six seasons as a collegiate/professional basketball player
Caitlin Clark has missed a game due to injury
On the day before her much-awaited game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena
Clark was scratched from the Indiana Fever’s preseason opener at home against the Washington Mystics
Clark is dealing with an injury to her left leg
Clark initially was listed as questionable
but was announced as out just before the game started
The Fever face the Brazil National Team at 3 p.m
Clark was the WNBA Rookie of the Year last season
playing in all 40 regular-season games and both playoff games
She played in all 139 of Iowa’s games during her collegiate career
Fever beat reporter for the Indianapolis Star
said Friday that Clark “(had) been practicing as normal throughout the week
“She participated in the portion of practice open to the media Friday afternoon
competing in the half-court shot contest and getting some extra shots up after practice
She did wear sweatpants during Friday's practice
so it's unknown if she was wearing a brace or any protection on her leg.”
IOWA CITY — Aliyah Boston sees a change in Caitlin Clark
“The biggest difference in Caitlin ..
it’s her strength,” Boston said Wednesday about her Indiana Fever teammate
Boston and the Fever will make their long-awaited appearance at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday
The WNBA team will face the Brazil National Team
The exhibition game has long been sold out
“My biggest focus of the offseason was to get stronger,” said Clark
who led Iowa to the NCAA tournament final in 2023 and 2024
“It’s going to help both offensively and defensively
I shouldn’t get as tired during a game.”
Only five players remain on the roster from last year’s team that went 20-20 — including 9-5 after the Olympics break — and reached the WNBA playoffs for the first time in seven years
Indiana native Stephanie White has returned home to coach the Fever; she spent the past two seasons head coach of the Connecticut Sun
trying to figure out my new teammates and figure out a new system,” Clark said
“There’s so much personality on this team
That’s what fans are going to love about us
We’re going to have a lot of fun playing basketball.”
In her Rookie of the Year campaign in 2024
She shot 41.7 percent from the floor (34.4 percent from 3-point range) and 90.6 percent from the line
“Caitlin loves to play such a fast-paced game,” Boston said
and it helps my mindset at where I need to be (on the floor).”
Sunday marks their second exhibition in two days; they host the Washington Mystics at noon Saturday before flying to Iowa
Clark transitioned immediately from the college game to the pros
she was able to rest (and strengthen) her body somewhat for seven months
“The rest aspect got my body where it needed to be
and that was super important,” she said
Being on the 18th green on Sunday at the Masters was one of the coolest things ever.”
