Piedmont first baseman Jordan Vo (12) catches a throw to retire Castro Valley's David Colon (23) during the Trojans 5-0 win on April 23
The Highlanders returned the favor with a 3-2 win at Castro Valley on April 25
Piedmont High School’s baseball team handed powerful Castro Valley its first loss of the West Alameda County Conference Foothill division season with a 3-2 road win on April 25
That earned the Highlanders a split of an important two-game series
Pitcher Jack Meyjes helped the cause early
Meyjes got an infield grounder by Braden Spade
allowing a run to score but getting a key second out
David Colon was then thrown out trying to steal home to kill the threat
The Highlanders took immediate advantage of three consecutive one-out walks from Owen Seidel in the second
An error brought home one run and a bases-loaded walk brought home another
A wild pitch by reliever Ryan Thanos with the bases loaded in the fourth brought home a third run for Piedmont
The Highlanders managed just six hits against five Trojan pitchers but nine walks proved fatal for Castro Valley
allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with six strikeouts and a walk
Diego Delventhal pitched the seventh for the save
going two innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit with four walks and two strikeouts
Seidel hit a home run leading off the fifth for Castro Valley’s other run
getting a strong pitching performance from Scott Baldwin
scattering seven hits and a walk and striking out four
Braden Spade came on to get the final two outs
William Ferreira started and took the loss for the Highlanders
going 3 2/3 innings and allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits with two walks and a strikeout
allowing two runs on two hits with three strikeouts and one walk
Piedmont had two huge chances against Baldwin
Jordan Vo singled to lead off the bottom of the third
Markos Lagios hit a grounder to third but Vo was caught to end the inning
a Will Parker double followed by a hit by pitch and an error loaded the bases with nobody out
Meyjes and Vo then struck out and pinch-hitter Mike Martin grounded out to end the threat without a run scoring
2-0 game if we play defense and run the bases,” Highlanders coach Eric Olson said
“They pitched a hell of a ball game and got the hits when they needed it and beat us in all three phases
Gilbert Seidel singled in one run and Spade followed with a sacrifice fly
Anthony Mares doubled in a run in the fourth
Spade and Owen Seidel doubled in runs in the fifth for the final margin
Parker and Vo both went 2-for-3 for Piedmont
Owen Seidel was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored for Castro Valley
“They have a fairly senior-heavy lineup and that matters in high school baseball
They’ve got nine seniors in their top nine hitters
They’ve got guys (who will) play in college throughout their lineup.”
Olson said he was excited to see how his team came back in the rematch
The Highlanders next play a home-and-away with Berkeley

CA — As spring break travel slows and fuel demand dips
drivers in Castro Valley and across California are getting a break at the pump
the state’s average gas price has dropped in the last two weeks
That’s nearly 60 cents below the average at this time last year
“The current soft demand for fuel is providing a much-needed relief for drivers,” said AAA Northern California spokesperson Doug Johnson
here are the average gas prices calculated last week:
California still tops the list of states with the highest fuel costs
followed by Hawaii ($4.50) and Washington ($4.31)
Mississippi offers the lowest average at $2.68 per gallon
Hawaii tops the list at 55 cents per kilowatt hour
while Kansas is the least expensive at 22 cents
AAA recommends using the AAA Mobile App, now available on CarPlay, to find the latest fuel and EV charging prices along your route. More information is available at GasPrices.AAA.com

UPS on Tuesday announced it is planning to cut 20,000 jobs this year
part of a cost-cutting effort that's linked to fewer deliveries from Amazon
The shipping company, which operates in over 200 countries, currently has around 490,000 employees. The layoffs will impact slightly over 4% of its workforce. This follows an announcement from UPS last year that it would cut 12,000 positions
The move is part of the company's plan to consolidate UPS's facilities and workforce
the company announced it will also close 73 of its buildings by the end of June 2025 and said that it may target additional buildings for closure

CA— Residents of Castro Valley may want to book a day off work or school on March 14 so they can stay up the night before and drink in the “blood moon” — a full lunar eclipse
In a total lunar eclipse
the moon moves into the inner part of Earth’s shadow
some of the sunlight passing through our planet’s atmosphere reaches the moon’s surface
A partial eclipse occurs when only part of Earth’s shadow covers the moon
The moon will look dark red or orange for about 65 minutes
but the entire event will last just over six hours
Residents of Castro Valley— all of North America
in fact — will be able to see it from start to finish
Penumbral phase: The moon enters Earth’s fuzzy outer shadow and loses brightness
Partial phase: The moon begins to enter Earth’s darker umbral shadow and begins to turn red from 1o:09 m.m
Totality: The entire moon is within Earth’s shadow from 11:26 p.m
Partial phase: The spectacle reverses with another partial phase from 12:31 a.m
For the best views of the total lunar eclipse
get as far away from urban light pollution as possible
The entire eclipse is visible with the naked eye
but backyard telescopes and binoculars help skywatchers see the movement of Earth’s shadow across the surface of the moon
Another total lunar eclipse will occur overnight Sept. 7-8, 2025, with the full corn moon, but most people in North America won’t be able to see it, according to NASA
2026 total lunar eclipse will be visible across the western U.S
The blood moon offers a rare opportunity for photographers to capture moonshots that are sure to flood social media feeds. A cellphone can take a decent shot, but won’t capture super-detailed images of the subterranean surface of the moon
you’ll need more sophisticated camera equipment
but the 600mm-800mm lenses professional photographers use aren’t in most people’s camera bags
Neither are lenses with massively wide-open apertures of f/1/4
A 300mm lens with a low aperture setting will deliver a sharp
Shoot with an ISO of 400 and an aperture setting of around f/2.8
You should shoot in manual mode and use the raw setting
When using a cellphone to photograph the blood moon
Because cellphone cameras don’t have apertures
adjust the phone’s camera to pro mode and change the exposure settings yourself
The longer the shutter is open the more light will be captured
Don’t digitally zoom in on the moon so it will fill more of the frame
keep the moon relatively small and frame it against the landscape
for example with significant buildings or structures in the foreground
It’s possible you may see worms wiggling out of the ground as the eclipse ends. The full worm moon is one of many monikers used to describe Earth’s satellite at this phase in its orbit
Indigenous tribes named the full moons to keep track of the passing year
choosing the names to reflect the tribe’s customs and culture
Many people believe the full worm moon was so named because it’s the time of year when earthworms
awoken by the vibrations of spring raindrops on the soil surface
the captain of a Massachusetts colonial unit
visited Native American tribes in North Dakota
he wrote that the term “worm” referred to beetle larvae that emerge from the thawing bark of trees as spring nears
2025 at 9:20 am PT.css-79elbk{position:relative;}Watch for the full moon this weekend
CA — The weather forecast this weekend looks to be favorable to see the first full moon of spring as it rises over Castro Valley Saturday evening
April’s full moon is known as the pink moon
It’s named after the pretty pink ground phlox that signals the arrival of spring
It will peek over the eastern horizon at about 6:45 p.m
The full moon occurs far enough in advance of the Lyrid meteor shower peak that it could allow for a decent show
It’ll be about 50 percent illuminated at the April 21-22 peak
One of the oldest recorded meteor showers with observations dating back to 687 B.C.
the Lyrids are known for luminous dust trains that last for several seconds
the Lyrids offer about 18 shooting stars an hour
The ancient Eta Aquariid meteor shower gets started around April 19 and runs concurrently with the Lyrids
This shower is the more prolific of the two
These fast meteors also leave glowing trains that can last anywhere from several seconds to minutes
The shower peaks overnight May 4-5 and rambles on until month’s end

(Shutterstock)CALIFORNIA — The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is exploring opportunities to expand its management of the state's growing gray wolf population
While it's been well over a century since gray wolves roamed the Bay Area
the fascination with wolves has remained ever since a wolf pack with pups was found in Lassen County in 2017
seven known wolf packs are living in California
mainly in the northeastern part of the state
with one pack residing in the southern Sierra Nevada
Five of the seven packs are breeding pairs
Fish and Wildlife is taking further steps to ensure the population can thrive; while taking the communities they live near into consideration
The first order of business is to gather details about the packs
Fish and Wildlife's valuation of the status of California's wolf population may include collecting data on wolf behaviors
environmental factors and potential impacts as the population grows
Fish and Wildlife will evaluate legal pathways to potentially issue permits to allow for what it calls "less-than-lethal harassment" to address wolf activity near livestock or human population
Tools might include nonlethal ammunition or motorized equipment to follow or pursue wolves
Fish and Wildlife plans to release an online tool providing the location of GPS-collared wolves
which can report when populations are near livestock
Fish and Wildlife is also releasing its first annual report about the gray wolf population in the state
These actions are in addition to other activities Fish and Wildlife has taken regarding the wolves
including compensation payments for livestock producers that have had confirmed injured or killed livestock by wolves
Fish and Wildlife continues to explore ways to protect livestock
staff spent over 200 days in the field monitoring wolves with the goal of capturing and collaring wolves with GPS trackers
Fish and Wildlife also has jurisdiction to investigate California wolf deaths

Eden Housing has donated 3 acres of creek land in Castro Valley to a trust for Native American tribes after winning approval for a controversial plan to build 72 affordable homes
The Hayward-based nonprofit developer gave the riparian land next to its Crescent Grove complex at 22447 Crescent Grove to the Sogorea Te’ Land Trust, the San Francisco Chronicle reported
It’s the first waterway to be returned to the trust
according to trust co-founder Corrina Gould
a spokeswoman for the Confederated Villages of Lisjan and Ohlone tribes
The trust has worked with governments and nonprofits since 2015 to rename parks and return East Bay land to Indigenous stewardship
“We are blessed to have this piece of our creek return to us,” Gould said at a news conference
“We’re going to be able to care for this land and this waterway as we dream and pray for our salmon to come back home.”
The 3-acre property along San Lorenzo Creek in the unincorporated neighborhood south of Interstate 580 is part of a 6.3-acre parcel that Caltrans sold to Eden Housing in 2019
It had sat vacant for years after plans to build the Hayward Bypass, a proposed four-lane freeway east of Highway 238
according to Caltrans and Eden Housing officials
saying it would displace wildlife and destroy what locals dub Ruby Meadow
Three of the 6 acres couldn’t be developed
and Eden Housing tried to find a party to take the land as a gift
A neighbor who opposed the development connected Eden to the Indigenous trust

It also plans to restore the area by reintroducing native plant species and restoring the habitat along the creek
