CAVE SPRING, Va. – It’s been the question around the area and on social media: “Is there really going to be a Starbucks moving in?”
10 News got an exclusive sneak peek at the construction site at Cave Spring Corners on Friday, and a contractor confirmed the suspicions. We also hit the streets of Cave Spring to find out what people thought, and reactions were mixed.
“I’m definitely going to Starbucks and getting me a coffee.”
“Oh never mind, we got too many; we don’t need no more.”
“I don’t drink coffee, so it’s a waste for me.”
Construction is expected to wrap up in June, with the store slated to open this summer. 10 News reached out to Starbucks for comment, and we’re still waiting to hear back.

(WDEF) – A weekend cave expedition in Middle Tennessee turned dangerous for a Nashville man
prompting a successful multi-agency rescue mission
The Chattanooga-Hamilton County Rescue Service joined forces with the Sparta-White County Rescue Squad and White County Emergency Management to assist a Vanderbilt University student who became trapped deep inside Blue Spring Cave in Sparta
Officials say the student was on an overnight research trip with classmates when he got sick roughly three miles into the cave system on Friday
Though he initially struggled to move due to weakness
he was later able to crawl out on his own with assistance from rescuers
White County EMS evaluated him on Saturday
and he did not require further medical transport
The group had entered the cave on Friday afternoon
including the injured student and his classmates
Captain Brandon Powers with the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Rescue Service credited the collaboration among agencies for the positive outcome
Our main task was to establish communication with the patient and determine if a carryout would be needed,” Powers said
“While we were ready to assist with a carryout through some tight passages
the student’s condition improved enough for him to crawl out
Blue Spring Cave is a privately owned cave network in Middle Tennessee that spans more than 37 miles
Known for its complex underground passages
the cave is gated and only accessible with permission
“We’re thankful for the teamwork that led to a successful outcome.”

Chrystal has been making literature leap off the page for the better part of two decades in Roanoke County schools. Her creativity knows no bounds, and her classroom success doesn’t either.
“I’m going to really try to find a way to make it as enjoyable as possible. If that’s teaching ‘Wuthering Heights’ like it’s a soap opera or making them get up and count out rhythms and do rhyme schemes certain ways—as long as they have a little bit of enjoyment, that’s my goal,” Ms. Shawn explains.
“We read through the nominations, and we look at them very closely and we’re looking for the story and she’s a storyteller, right? That was even said about her. She’s teaching the kids how to be storytellers and be able to put it in writing,” Blue Eagle Credit Union Chief Talent Officer Diane Smith says.
Cave Spring Principal Haley Deeds had a vision for journalism at the home of the Knights when she took the helm more than three years ago. Chrystal has helped feed that vision, and it has evolved into a multimedia presentation called ‘Knightly News.’
“We sat down, and I shared the vision I had for the journalism program to go more digital, to go streaming, to have the students interview new teachers, highlight things happening—what we have going on too. To really make it personal to them and to ignite a passion, and so Ms. Shawn jumped right on board with that,” Deeds says.
Blue Eagle Credit Union awards $250 to both Chrystal and Cave Spring High. Her students are rewarded with skills that carry far beyond the Cave Spring walls.
“That’s the biggest love for me is when they’re done here they’re not just closing it off. They’re able to take what they learned and it helps them,” Shawn says.
Chrystal credits Northside High School advanced English and Literature teacher Martha Moseley as the inspiration behind her career. She described her journalism elective class as chaotic and creative, among other things. Our staff at WSLS 10 can certainly relate!

– There are a number of reasons things may catch our eye when scrolling social media--a funny video
a great play or just a viral sensation that has drawn huge numbers
That’s the case for a recent TikTok video I recently came across with millions of likes
Big dawg bidnis #wrestlingtiktok #wrestler #fyp
The viral female wrestler in the video is Mary Smith who happens to be a senior in our neck of the woods at Cave Spring High School.
“I just think it’s kind of insane that my video got that many likes and views,” Smith said. “I never expected it, especially from a video of me wrestling boys.”
The power of social media. The senior’s viral moment is just a snapshot of what it’s like being a female wrestler in Southwest Virginia. Mary was one of three girls at a midweek practice in the Cave Spring wrestling room.
She’s not treated any differently than her male peers. If you’re there to work hard, you’re an equal.
“The guys in the room have definitely warmed up to us being there,” said Smith. “I would say it’s not as accepting outside of teams that have girls that wrestle with them.”
The ratio is slowly changing after the Virginia High School League made girls wrestling a sanctioned sport two years ago. At Cave, it was important for head coach Mike Noell to bring in a female coach, not only to bring more girls to the sport, but mentor wrestlers like Mary.
Enter Katrina Anderson, a former Ferrum College wrestler who, until college, was the only girl wrestler in the room.
“Just seeing no female role models, not seeing female coaches, it just meant a lot to me to be that female role model for these girls,” said Anderson. “Because I know just being surrounded by guys all the time, they don’t know the struggles that girls deal with. They’re like, yeah, wrestling’s hard, but just because you’re a girl, it means you can still do it.”
The back-to-back state qualifier is shining a spotlight on a sport still dominated by boys by showing girls can compete too.
“I think they should 110% go for it. It’s the best decision I ever made,” Smith said. “I’ve made countless friends and I consider the guys and the girls on my team to be my family.”
From power moves on the mat through the power of social media, the sport continues to grow.
Brooke Leonard is the newest addition to the 10 Sports team, joining in June 2019.

The Cave Spring Community Coalition (CSCC) founding committee for the Northwest Georgia Charter Academy announces that the City of Cave Spring has offered two adjoining properties as a location for the future public charter school proposed to open in fall 2026
“We are delighted to announce our partnership with the City of Cave Spring,” stated Judy Taylor

The Academy will serve students who live in Floyd and Polk counties and attend any school in the area (private or public)
including three local public school systems: 1) Floyd County Schools; 2) Rome City Schools; and 3) Polk School District
The Academy plans to provide transportation services
The lease agreement will become effective in 2025 when the CSCC expects to be authorized as a public charter school
The agreement will allow the Academy to renovate and use the current Community Center for classrooms and another building for offices and ancillary services
The Academy will cover all expenses for renovation and all facility costs (such as utilities)
thus relieving the city of that responsibility while providing a site for the school at minimal cost compared to average costs for school facilities
Chair of the Academic Committee is a local educator with over 30 years of teaching and administrative experience
“I am excited to be involved in designing this new public school,” she said
“The academic model is based on the Expeditionary Learning (EL) framework which was established over 25 years ago via a partnership between the Harvard Graduate School of Education and Outward Bound
The model has been proven to improve student performance and includes a national network with more than 700 schools and districts in 46 states serving 1.3 million students
This will be a game-changer for K-12 education in northwest Georgia.”

Roanoke County Police said they responded to a robbery at the Stop In on Electric Road around 9 p.m. on Wednesday after reports of a robbery. They were told two people with partial face coverings threatened the clerk with a firearm and demanded money. The suspects left the store with around $1,000.
RCPD said they managed to track the suspects to Windy Hill Key Apartments, and had enough probable cause to execute a search warrant at the suspected apartment complex on Thursday. The suspects were not in the apartment, however, the police found evidence of the robbery.
Authorities said later that evening, they received reports from a neighbor stating that the two suspects were back at the apartment. Upon the police officers’ arrival, the two suspects fled the scene. One was apprehended and identified as 18-year-old Tatiyanna Briggs. She was arrested for the following:
