As state lawmakers are once again set to debate school funding
many North Texas districts are grappling with multi-million dollar deficits – and considering difficult cuts to balance their budgets
Cedar Hill ISD interim CFO Amy Drozd this week laid out several potential measures to fill the district’s $7 million shortfall
including consolidating two middle school campuses
leaving some security guard positions unfilled and eliminating some teaching and administrative positions
“Trying to come up with $7 million in the time frame that we need to
we’ve got to look at these drastic measures,” she told trustees at their meeting Monday
she said Cedar Hill ISD has faced declining enrollment
the loss of COVID-era funding and growing inflation
we gotta get to the bottom line where that dollar is concerned
but the kids are collateral damage at this particular point,” she said
The plan is to close the budget gap in two years
Board secretary Carma Morgan said they’ve known about the funding challenges for years
not for right now but for our future,” she said
The district will continue discussing its options ahead of adopting a budget in June
Meanwhile, Northwest ISD is also planning on eliminating more than 100 teaching positions to help fill its $16 million deficit

The nearly 141-year-old Civil War Sentry Monument has returned home to Cedar Hill Cemetery in Fredericksburg
Disassembled in October for restoration by Lebanon-based E&E Fabrication Inc.
was re-installed in about four hours on a warm and cloudless day in March
“Not only is he watching over the village of Fredericksburg (again)
president of the Cedar Hill Cemetery Association
There are 68 Civil War veterans interred in Cedar Hill Cemetery
according to cemetery association treasurer Rita Christ
E&E sales representative Al Billig said the process of returning the monument went smoothly
It was just great that everything fit together like it should
Billig noted the event drew about a dozen interested onlookers
this day was sunny and warm as work progressed and the sun rose in the sky
the restoration work performed over the winter months was a first-time experience and one they’ll never forget
the work to secure the monument’s base and statue
and paint the entire structure was completed in about five
A new foundation was also built to make the monument more secure
since it was constructed on a stone-based foundation.
The primary reason for repairing the statue was it had shifted over time and was leaning backwards
Cemetery officials were afraid it might fall from its position around 24 feet in the air
“It was great that we had the capability to do a project like this
to take it on in the first place and be able to do it,” Billig said
but the more research we did the more we realized that
Between now and a planned re-dedication ceremony later this month
there remains what Klahr calls a few cosmetic odds and ends to complete.
Billig noted that workers need to finish bolting down the base and clean up the finish
there’s a plan to insert a time capsule within the monument before the access door is reattached
those associated with it said it was only made possible by the local community
which rallied to help once it was publicly announced in March 2024
Klahr said the Eagle Hotel held two fundraising events to help raise money for a project originally estimated to cost around $120,000
The hotel donated 10 percent of all proceeds from two dates towards restoration efforts.
First Citizens Community Bank officials approached the cemetery association about holding its own fundraiser
If you rely on us for your Lebanon County news
“We were extremely pleased that they reached out to us
as many people in the community did,” Klahr said
“They reached out to us and said we want to do something
So everyone on the committee was very happy about that.”
with the food coming from local donations.
The chicken was provided by local poultry producer Bell & Evans
Womelsdorf-based Diffenbach’s Snacks supplied the potato chips
and Lebanon’s own Swiss Premium Dairy donated beverages
according to FCCB fundraiser committee chairman Melissa Daub
there was a conversation in a car from a corporate board meeting one day and one of our executive staff members
They were having a conversation and talking about the statue,” Daub said
How can we put in the time and effort to contribute to it?”
Daub said an eight- to ten-member volunteer committee of bank personnel was formed
and the decision was made to sponsor a chicken BBQ fundraiser
“In three weeks we had thrown it together,” she added
Daub said other community members pitched in as well
noting the financial goal was met and only 25 chicken dinners remained because Bell & Evans supplied more product than was requested
“We had so many people tell us this was a great idea and were asking if we could do it again,” she said
adding that the cemetery is special to her because her parents and other family members are interred there
“When management gives us a path to do something
it appeared that the project might derail when a restoration company backed out of it
Following a site visit and a quote that was good for 90 days
cemetery officials asked for an extension since the down payment was half of the total bid.
‘Can we have an extension?’” Klahr recalled
what we would do is we would recall rather than give this quote an extension because the cost of materials or things might change.’ And I said
cemetery officials learned the sales rep for the Ohio-based company had retired and they would no longer handle the project
That announcement left the committee scrambling to find a company to do the work
since few are versed in the restoration of zinc-based statues
“That kind of put us in a scramble mode and we kind of were brainstorming around the round table of the cemetery association of like
we got this monument that needs repair.’ And we were just kicking around different ideas and the name of E&E came up,” Klahr said
The initial meeting went well and the local relationship that was built became a win-win for E&E and for cemetery officials
“A big part of the savings was we didn’t have to pay for crews to come from Ohio and pay for transportation and lodging and all that kind of thing,” Klahr said
Al looked at it when we were doing the estimating
‘I need a crane,’ and got on his mobile phone and made a phone call and 45 minutes later the owner of the crane company was there.”
Having local business ties among numerous companies benefited the project.
“He (Dickinson Crane owner) looked at it and said
‘And I would use so-and-so for riggers (C&D Rigging).’ So they got on the phone and got them out
the rigging company to handle the monument bought all new rigging straps to ensure that they wouldn’t damage it
I can tell you those straps are a substantial expense.”
As the committee lined up potential businesses to perform the work
many gave back some of their services to the project.
“When we talked to businesses and they heard what we were doing
they volunteered some of their services as a donation,” Klahr said
“It was more or less when you talked to people and said
‘This is what we’re doing,’ then the response was
‘I could do this for you.’ That’s how it kind of came along.”
Klahr said Boger Concrete donated the concrete
Funk Construction provided engineering design services
V&S Galvanizing collaborated with E&E since neither had done this kind of work before
Eastern Atlantic States Regional Councils of Carpenters volunteered labor and experience to build the form and pour concrete for the foundation
“We were very happy because all the people that we hired or were hired were our local people,” Klahr said
“So the jobs and the money stayed right here in our neighborhood and we were happy about that
And of course you talked with Al at E&E so you know how his people felt and how they
Word of mouth was integral in all aspects of the project
“We would receive donations that were just very generous
I don’t want to be mentioned.’” Klahr said
and you’d talk to one person and they would network with some of their friends
… That’s kind of how it happened – the networking of other people outside of the cemetery association where the big helpers
Klahr said remaining monies will be used for future maintenance and repairs to the monument since people who donated funds intended their contributions to be used for that purpose
Klahr said he appreciates the community’s overwhelmingly positive response given the nature of the project
“I’m pleased that we could do it and maintain the monument for future generations
It’s an important thing to me that we don’t forget about those that served
especially during that horrible conflict or any conflict where we’ve asked soldiers to stand up for our rights
That’s a very important thing to remember,” he added

When workers set out to refurbish the Sentry Monument from Cedar Hill Cemetery in Fredericksburg
they never dreamed a mystery would be revealed to them.
Lebanon-based E&E Metal Fab Inc. was hired by the cemetery association last year to restore their Civil War monument
which included securing the statue and its base as well as cleaning and repainting it
it became apparent that additional historical markings were etched on the monument
The monument pays tribute to local residents who fought in the bloodiest war in U.S
the Union soldier has stood guard over Fredericksburg in Bethel Township for nearly 141 years

a date and other markings were etched onto the top portion of the monument’s base
It’s possible that the etchings were done in 1915 during what would have been a 50th anniversary commemoration of the end of the Civil War
according to Fredericksburg history writer Kathy Bicksler Stouffer
She is the co-author with her siblings of the 2021 book
Pennsylvania,”which contains a chapter on Fredericksburg-area churches and cemeteries
Bicksler Stouffer and LebTown researched extensively in newspaper archives seeking more information about a possible 50th anniversary ceremony at the cemetery
but no further details were revealed.
a newspaper article that discusses an Appomattox Day Gathering – a ceremony that’s still held today in the town where Ulysses S
Lee agreed to end the war – that may have happened at Cedar Hill Cemetery around the 50th anniversary
She said she also possesses the names of 17 local Civil War veterans who were still alive in 1915
and it’s possible some of those survivors wrote on the monument on April 8
She noted the words “Hand Cock ends the war 1865” were written on the monument adjacent to the date “April 8
The only local mention of the Civil War around its 50th anniversary is a page one photo in the Lebanon Daily News of generals Grant and Lee on Apr
The photo is accompanied by a caption noting the day was the golden anniversary of the war’s end
Bicksler Stouffer isn’t sure why someone wrote that comment about Winfield Scott Hancock (spelled as Hand Cock on the monument)
but some research sheds light on why it was possibly signed that way
She noted that Hancock commanded troops after General John F
Reynolds was killed during the Battle of Gettysburg
Hancock’s corps thwarted Pickett’s Charge
with Hancock risking his life while personally leading his troop’s charge
Hancock was wounded when a bullet ricocheted off his saddle and went through his thigh.
but he later participated in the Battle of the Wilderness
which is also noted on the monument,” said Bicksler Stouffer
“His corps also fought at the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse
so the ‘Hancock ends the war 1865’ doesn’t make much sense.”
While it doesn’t make much sense given his backstory
she offered an educated guess as why someone may have felt compelled to honor Hancock
“I’m guessing the writer is crediting Hancock for the win at Gettysburg
which many consider the turning point of the Civil War. Of course
weakening Lee’s army by splitting it in two was quite an accomplishment as well,” Bicksler Stouffer wrote in an email to LebTown
“He (Hancock) later ran for president as the Democratic candidate
losing by a slim margin to Republican James Garfield
his nickname was ‘Hancock the Superb.'”
E&E workers also discovered another name inscribed on a metal plate that helped to hold the Civil War sentinel in place.
Workers found the name “Owens” etched on the bottom of that metal plate
neither LebTown nor others associated with the project had consulted with Bicksler Stouffer about her prior research
At that time it was believed that the statue may have been removed since a circular hole was drilled into the metal base after it had been signed as what appeared to be “JJ Owens.”
“It looks like a W,” said E&E sales rep Al Billig to LebTown while initially trying to decipher the signature on the metal base despite the hole drilled through Owen’s name
who has been following the renovation project since it was announced
asked Cedar Hill Cemetery secretary Rita Christ if she had an Owens in a cache of paperwork concerning the cemetery’s history.
Christ had shared some of that paperwork with LebTown during the first story written about the cemetery association’s fundraising efforts
and eventual re-dedication ceremony once the statue is returned
She texted information that was contained in a document circa 1887 that she said was found in the Newberry Library that identifies the Owens in question.
has put up a Soldiers Monument on Cedar Hill Cemetery
no other records concerning a “JJ Owens” or another iteration of that name were found via an internet search
no details about his life were found during an exhaustive search that would indicate why he was involved in this project.
“That’s great info,” Billig wrote to LebTown about the confirmation of Owen’s identity
she shared additional information about Owens
Owens of Lewisburg was the agent for Monumental Bronze Company,” she wrote in an email along with a photo of an ad concerning his Connecticut-based company
That company was responsible for erecting thousands of monuments across the nation.
it appears an A is written above the hole … I know there are many typos in the papers
automatic readers can mistake initials,” she wrote
noting that the process of automatic readers reading old newspaper articles to digitize them is an imperfect science.
The identities of other initials etched on the monument’s base may never be solved.
What was initially believed to be the signature of Col. John H. Lick doesn’t seem to be the case upon further research. It seemed possible that he may have signed it because Lick was a local businessman whose mausoleum is located in Cedar Hill Cemetery and since he commissioned the Civil War monument’s construction in 1884.
Christ sent Billig a photo of Lick’s signature on a program so that he could compare the two signatures. (While Lick may have signed the monument before 1915, he couldn’t have that year because he passed away on Oct. 22, 1891, at his Lebanon residence.)
“As much as I want to match it up, I cannot,” wrote Billig to LebTown after the statue had been lightly power washed and prior to Bicksler Stouffer weighing in on the multiple signatures. Following the initial dead-end lead, company president Willie Erb did some research and he believes the one signature may possibly belong to Frederick Jacob Light.
Later, when a photo of those initials was sent to Bicksler Stouffer, she wrote this response to LebTown.
“The first initials attached below could be Percival L Strauss. I thought at first that the first initial was an ‘F’ due to the horizontal arrow-looking stroke. However, I also noted a similar-looking item on one of the other signatures and think it may be a symbol for the unit (maybe a sword?) You may note that there is a ‘P’ looking letter above that.” In a later email she wrote that “Percival Strauss owned the Strauss House (Hotel) from 1869 to 1895.”
Today, the Strauss House is the Eagle Hotel in downtown Fredericksburg. (At LebTown’s request, Bicksler Stouffer also conducted research on Light but did not find any details on anyone with that name with connections to Fredericksburg.)
Another etching on the top portion of the statue’s base looks like a tiny heart along with other markings that are unidentifiable even after it had been lightly power washed. Billig noted that what appears to be other markings, possibly signatures, were also found after cleaning off over a century’s worth of grime from the monument. Unfortunately, those markings are illegible, including one on the front of the monument’s access door.
Cedar Hill Cemetery was created in 1869 and the first person was buried there in 1870. After the monument was added in 1884, families were given the option to re-inter their loved ones who were Civil War veterans in the cemetery near the statue or throughout the graveyard, according to Christ. Fifty-six Civil War veterans are interred in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Christ added, of the 192 veterans buried there.
Another set of initials identifiedOne set of initials with other writing may have been solved
She wrote to LebTown about a signature and verbiage she discovered when she visited the cemetery about two years ago that contain the initials “GH” and the words “battle of G.”
One of the most recognized Lebanon County Civil War Regiments is the 93rd. George W. Howard was a part of Co
1863 at the age of 17 (he turned 17 in June)
Maryland on July 1st when they received word at 8 p.m
of the fighting at Gettysburg. The regiment led the 6th corps on a 37-mile march in 19 hours to reach the battle the evening of the 2nd as Longstreet’s attack threatened Little Round Top
They participated in the Battle of the Wilderness and the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse
Both these battles were led by General Hancock. So George Howard is a contender for writing
‘Hand Cock ends the war 1865’. The Regiment was present at Appomattox Court House on April 9
That would make Appomattox Day very special for George W. Howard
The ‘G.H.’ initials with ‘the battle of G?’ written above them would be George Howard
George was a tailor in Fredericksburg after the war
I am continuing to research the 17 Veterans
but I thought this was an interesting story with the 19-hour march to Gettysburg. I also liked that he was at Appomattox and that his initials are on the monument
Several of the veterans were 16 to 17 years old when they mustered in
which explains why they were still alive in 1915

The then 6-foot-1, 200-pound youngest son of Deion Sanders played for his Hall of Fame dad — the offensive coordinator — at Trinity Christian in Cedar Hill (Texas)
where he couldn’t have been more productive
Shedeur threw for 12,627 yards in a four-year career
completing 805 of 1,238 passes (65%) for 166 touchdowns while leading the Tigers to three state championships in TAPPS
the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools
definitely owns a stepchild reputation to the UIL
perhaps the most competitive top-to-bottom football state in the union with approximately 1,300 schools
Although he surely faced lesser competition to his public school Texas brethren
skill and highly competitive nature were obvious
He received 3-star status from 247Sports
which takes into consideration other recruiting services Rivals.com and ESPN
National 247Sports recruiting analyst Greg Biggins compared him to career NFL backup Jacoby Brissett and projected him as a round 4-7 NFL draft pick
heading into Thursday’s first round of the NFL Draft
Shedeur was projected as a first-round pick
In one of the more shocking developments in NFL Draft history
Sanders for some reason dropped to the 144th pick
“(Sanders is) highly productive and a winner with a pair of state championships to his name,” Biggins wrote in March 2020
Does a nice job making that initial pass rusher miss
doesn’t panic and shows poise and calmness in the pocket
“Has dual-threat ability and can pick up big chunks of yards with his legs but doesn’t take off and run as much as you would expect
Has enough arm strength to get the ball down the field and shows nice touch on his deep ball
“Can tighten his release a bit but has some solid tools that project well to college
Upside is an impact upper tier Power 5 starter and potential NFL draft pick.”
As a kid, Shedeur’s upbeat personality somewhat mirrored his dad’s as revealed in the MaxPreps documentary series “The Truth about Trinity.”
Shedeur was just a high school freshman at the time
and it offered a window into his relationship with his father
one of the nation’s most visible and vocal athletes of this or any other generation
It’s important because the two have been hooked together on the gridiron for eight seasons
as after high school son followed dad or father followed son to Jackson State and the University of Colorado
Before kickoff of each game in high school
Deion and Shedeur always took a stroll to the end zone
“We always exchange thoughts and things we want to do and accomplish and what to expect,” Deion said in the documentary
Off the field, Shedeur and his dad had a unique, playful, competitive relationship, shown in a fun, revealing fishing expedition
it’s always a competition between him and me,” Shedeur said
Said Deion: “Competitive is what the Sanders are
(Shedeur) is walking around the house like ‘I’m the smartest one in here
I got all A’s and one B.' That’s how he is
USA; Colorado Buffalos quarterback Shedeur Sanders (2) against the Arizona Wildcats at Arizona Stadium
Rebilas-Imagn Images“You know how blessed you are to coach your kid in high school
I get to pass on everything I’ve learned," Deion said
Sometimes he sees me as Dad and not Coach during the heat of the battle
and third of all I kind of know what I’m doing
I got a gold jacket (NFL Hall of Fame) and blue one from college (Hall of Fame)
But in the heat of the moment he kind of forgets he sees Dad sometimes and not Coach
“He’s going to learn to mature out of Daddy’s mold.”
his dad was a first-round pick of the Atlanta Falcons
he tweeted Sunday a five-word prediction to his NFL career that no doubt came straight from his father:
