May 5, 2025Prince William and Kate Middleton's children made a surprise appearance at the VE Day celebrations on May 5, but their youngest son — Prince Louis — stole attention with his adorable antics
During the royal family's first event of the week-long celebrations
the 7-year-old prince was spotted tugging on the Prince of Wales' RAF No.1 uniform while he conversed with the person next to him
Prince Louis was also spotted playfully blowing at his bangs and enjoying other parts of the ceremony
which included military proceedings that went through the Queen Victoria Memorial
According to The Sun
Prince Louis shared some "cheeky" comments about the proceedings with his father
where he asked him “Wasn't this supposed to be fun,” which Prince William responded with "It is son."
Prince William then explained the parade route to Louis before adding that "You will never forget this..
It's not going to be long and I want you to be taking an interest."
The event marks the first public appearance of the year for Prince Louis along with his siblings Prince George, 11, and Princess Charlotte, 10. They joined their parents and their grandfather King Charles, Queen Camila
The military proceedings are the first of many events this week that set to honor those who served during World War II
This year's celebrations also commemorate 80 years since King George VI announced the end of the war in Europe over radio broadcast on May 8
The working royals are set to make several more appearances throughout the week
with Prince George joining William and Kate on their duty — a move to introduce him and his siblings to their royal duties
hundreds of Ohio State University students of color have gathered on the eve of spring commencement each year to be recognized for their academic achievements at the Afrikan American Farewell Celebration
That's because when Ohio State announced in February that it would sunset the Office of Diversity and Inclusion
which had long been a sponsor of the event
The celebration itself was also under review as part of the university's audit of programming
initiatives and projects that have traditionally been considered diversity

The news reverberated across Ohio State's vast alumni network
many of whom participated in the event themselves as students and understood the weight this event holds for OSU's Black community
we needed to come up with creative solutions," Chibundu Nnake
president of the Ohio State Black Alumni Society
Months of planning, fundraising and compromise culminated on Saturday
inside the Ohio Union's Archie Griffin Ballroom for the 33rd annual event
now called simply The Farewell Celebration
The name change was one of the university's recommendations to allow the event in order "to be clear that the event is open to all students," said OSU spokesperson Chris Booker
the National Pan-Hellenic Council took the lead in hosting the event
in partnership with Ohio State's Sorority and Fraternity Life and the Black Alumni Society

Nnake said The Farewell Celebration has always been open to all students
but it is encouraged that students who participate have a connection or some type of understanding of African or African American culture
About 200 graduates of all levels filed into the packed ballroom to the cheers of their loved one. Most came dressed in their graduation robes, and many had stoles draped across their necks representing one of the nine historically Black, Greek-lettered fraternities and sororities, better known as the Divine Nine
senior vice president for student life at Ohio State
thanked the team who made the event possible and said the celebration is "indeed a point of pride" for the graduates and their families
Most speakers at The Farewell Celebration were not shy when it came to addressing the changing landscape of higher education and the politics behind those changes
an Ohio State junior and president of the university's National Pan-Hellenic Council
said the road to graduation has not been easy for many of this year's seniors
When the spaces created to uplift this community — like the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the Center for Student Belonging and Social Change — sunset
it's moments like this that remind them of the obstacles in their path
And you're not standing by any accident," Ratcliff said
even when the world made you question your own worth
you accomplish this because of the unique ability that only you possess."
president of Ohio State's Black Student Association and the event's senior student keynote
told the audience that she couldn't give her remarks without naming what many in the room were feeling about attacks on DEI work in higher education
Middleton said she and her peers are "the living legacy of those who made DEI a movement before it had a name." As they graduate and leave the university
she said they will continue to serve the Black community
and "every student who dares to take up a space in the classroom that was not designed for us."
"I am my ancestors' wildest dreams," Middleton said
Nnake said he relished in the small part that he and his fellow OSU Black Alumni Society members had in making sure that this event actually happened
In an open letter in early March
Nnake made a promise on behalf of the alumni society to the Class of 2025
vowing to raise the money necessary to ensure that the Afrikan American Farewell Celebration could take place this year and for years to come: "We will not allow this cherished tradition to be another casualty of these short-sighted decisions
Your achievements deserve to be celebrated
Nnake said the graduates before him represented a resilient generation
regardless of DEI rollbacks and a renewed fight for civil rights
diploma-earning testament to that enduring spirit," Nnake said
no matter how the legal changes and the societal obstacles or the circumstances that have been — yes
and let's be real — and will continue to be
Farewell Celebration centers joy for Ohio State graduatesDespite decisions that could've ended The Farewell Celebration
the event was still a celebration of students' accomplishments
diplomas within reach because we stand on the shoulders of giants," Nnake said
"We stand on the shoulders of our ancestors."
The audience rose and joined the OSU African American Voices Gospel Choir to sing a rendition of Lift Every Voice and Sing
Unlike a typical Ohio State commencement ceremony
where only doctoral students have their names read at graduation
every student attending the Farewell Celebration has their name read
Family members and friends in the audience cheered for their graduates from the crowd
Students of all academic levels were given a Kente stole
a symbol of achievement and overcoming hardship that pays homage to the ancestors' sacrifices
red and green fabric matches that of the cloth worn by kings during the Ashanti Empire in the 17th century in what is now Ghana
Many graduates involved in Greek life received their stoles stepping across their stage as their fraternity and sorority brothers and sisters cheered them on

Ohio (WKEF) -- A celebration of life honoring 25-year-old Trenton Ladd who passed away in January was held by dozens of his closest friends and family
addressed the crowd of people gathered to remember her son
saying his death was the hardest thing she has ever experienced in her life
Good Shepherd Ministries of Dayton hosted the memorial just feet away from where Trenton Ladd was found on January 5th
About 5 months later his mother shared words of encouragement for the addicts in attendance and their families
You just don't know how much our hearts break to see you suffer and not be in recovery," said Jackson
Ladd was found dead outside Clearview Treatment Services in Dayton
The Montgomery County Coroner ruled his death accidental hypothermia
Kierstyn Crawford who attends meetings with families of addicts and is a counselor in the community said the lives of addicts and anyone in recovering mean something
just like Ladd's life meant something
And really just get the message out that people who are in recovery
people who are struggling have a right to expect safe treatment
They certainly shouldn't freeze to death," said Crawford
Others in attendance remembered him as a light
someone they could drive around and listen to music with
and someone that gave them a laugh in dark times
Always had a smile no matter what the struggles he was going through," said Amy Dunkin
Dayton Site Director for Families of Addicts
He hadn't given up on himself," added Crawford
“It was unfortunate to lose a life this young
and we just don't want what happenedwe want to be the voice for the people that can't talk anymore," said Shawn Trapp

The Warriors had been kept afloat by Buddy Hield (33 points on the night) and the combined efforts of the other Golden State players through three quarters
But when the Dubs entered the fourth quarter up by eight
The superstar shooter scored 14 points in the final frame
and hit a pair of classic Curry three-pointers
he found Hield in the corner for one last three with about three minutes remaining
putting GSW up by 20; the shot effectively served as the final nail in the coffin for Houston

This spring has been a long celebration—one after another
It’s the season when the energy around town reaches a fever pitch
and there’s a sense that winter is finally behind us
It’s loud and joyful and chaotic in the best ways—a fitting kickoff to what has turned into one of the most celebratory seasons of my life
I headed across the Atlantic to begin the first of six RSJ Yonderlust Tours
I hosted my guests on a 10th-floor rooftop during Las Fallas
Valencia’s biggest and boldest celebration
Las Fallas traces its roots back to the old tradition of carpenters burning leftover wood scraps as winter ended
it evolved into a city-wide festival with massive
intricate sculptures—called fallas—paraded through the streets before being set ablaze
and it felt like the entire community was connected by tradition and sheer joy
Standing there watching this citywide party unfold
it was impossible not to get caught up in the beauty
we made our way to Tuscany to host three groups
Easter in Tuscany is something everyone should experience at least once
and Easter brings it all together in a way that feels like a personal celebration of life itself
We celebrated at our friend Marina’s house
at a long lunch—with people from three continents at the table
It was an Easter rooted in simple pleasures—good food
a moment that cast a bittersweet reflection over the holiday
It was a reminder that even in seasons of celebration
The next stop was Amsterdam— to join my fourth group on a trek through The Netherlands and Belgium— perfectly timed for King’s Day
King’s Day celebrates the birthday of King Willem-Alexander
but it’s really just a nationwide excuse for pure
The Dutch dress in orange—the whole country does
and canals all glow in shades of bright orange as music blares and parties unfold
instead of watching from a rooftop like we did in Spain
weaving our way through the bumper-to-bumper traffic of other boats packed with celebrants
I thought we might be stuck for good in a floating stalemate
mixing the soundtrack to our own little floating party
I’ve never seen anything like it—the whole city laughing
unforgettable celebrations I’ve ever witnessed
It will be my first Mother’s Day without my mother
and though that reality carries a quiet weight
I’ll honor my wife and all that she has done for our family
and celebrations of love and family carry an even deeper meaning
and it’s worth saying how much I love this part of my work
have traveled with me a combined total of 114 times
and that’s not something I ever take for granted
These travelers aren’t just guests—they’ve become dear friends
and witnessing their own celebrations along the way
is one of the most rewarding things I get to do
This has also been one of the longest periods I’ve been away
I will have been on the road for over two months
England and Scotland are still ahead for one last group this spring
I also look forward to getting home—to my family and restaurants
where one new project is under construction and others are on the drawing board
Our latest documentary at the Institute for Southern Storytelling—on Eudora Welty—was just nominated for five Southeast Regional Emmy Awards
Hopefully there will be more celebrating to do in June
I also received word about a few other upcoming honors that I’ll be able to share soon
2025 has been a year of celebrations already
But in all these celebrations—Mardi Gras beads flying
orange-clad boat parades in Amsterdam—one moment stands above them all
I can still see my daughter and her new husband on stage at the end of their wedding night
The band had called them up for the final song
and shining with a kind of pure joy that I will never forget
My daughter has always been full of light—joyful
it struck me how quickly the years had passed
how all the little moments that made her who she is had led to this beautiful
No celebration this spring—or any spring—could ever come close to matching that
In the American South we eat shrimp and grits
In the small hilltop village of Montefioralle
the village’s only restaurant serves ribs cooked over a wood fire and seasoned only with salt and pepper
That preparation is nice if all one is eating is ribs
This is a typical Italian home-style preparation of ribs
These ribs are baked in a hearty tomato stock and are perfectly matched with polenta
sliced into individual pieces¼ cup House seasoning blend (see recipe)¼ cup Extra virgin olive oil2 cups Yellow onion
minced¼ cup Tomato paste2 cups Dry red wine1 – 28 oz
with juice2 tsp Kosher salt1 tsp Fresh ground black pepper1 recipe Polenta (see recipe)
Season the ribs with the house seasoning blend
Heat the oil in a large roasting pan over high heat
sear the rib pieces on each side until browned
set the ribs aside and lower the heat medium-low
about 4-6 minutes. Add the tomato paste and stir constantly for 5 minutes so as not to scorch
Deglaze the pan with the wine and reduce by half
salt and pepper and continue cooking for 5 more minutes

(I get a kiss from the lovely Leigh Ann after Sovereignty wins the 151st Kentucky Derby…please click on the link below)
Derby 151 Gene Wins
There are very few things in this world that I enjoy more than the Kentucky Derby
It’s more than just 2 minutes in time
It’s more than just the clothes and the hats; the ample food and the sampling of drinks
all the prep races and how the horses are progressing
It is the hours dedicated to the handicapping and the work doing all of the analysis and homework to try and pick a horse who you think can win
It is the weeks of celebration that penetrates more than just Louisville in this Commonwealth and touches more than just the sleeve of the garment
It is the pride the swells in the hearts of us Kentuckians
we are known around this entire world as the best in the business of breeding
It is the overwhelming feeling of camaraderie that overcomes the head and floods the heart
and makes all of us reach out to friend and foe to sing one more song
“Weep no more my lady,” while all the time fighting back a tear that wells in our eyes and
It is what makes us smile when we are in a foreign land and someone asks where we are from
It is what makes us angry when fools like the Courier-Journal’s Joe Gerth and other minions like him try to destroy our heritage and our sport in the name of stupidity
It is what makes us defend the sanctity of our event; our race; our Derby with all our fiber against those that have cheated before and may think they can ever try to cheat us again
and remain standing until every last one of those 20 cross the finish line
It is the bind that ties us all Kentuckians into a human ball of love — for the moments leading up; for the friendships that it bonds; for the hugs that it forges; for the memories that it carves and saves
Kentucky Derby 151 was one of the best ever for Gene McLean
Partly because of the fact that we picked the winner; we touted the winner; we never wavered from the winner; and we bet and WON on the winner
It was standing side by side with friends and family throughout the week leading up and through the big race
It was watching with anxious times and butterflies
It was watching and waiting for the right time for horse and human to move into contention
Until it all erupted into that moment in time when you and the people at the table next door
were now holding onto each other and cheering with everything you’ve got for more; for more; for more
just imagine if I ever were to be so lucky to have my own horse in a race like this
Go ahead Churchill Downs and build that next phase of construction
The Kentucky Derby — no matter who tries to bring it and us down — will always stand tall like those Spires that reach to the heavens
I just got to think that among those 100,000 people that came on Friday for the Kentucky Oaks and the 150,000 or so people that came on Saturday for the Kentucky Derby there are more of them that love these days like me
Go ahead Churchill Downs and celebrate what you have already built
The greatest day in the life of Kentucky and most Kentuckians
one of the greatest days of the year for me — each and every year
It is why we come to May with love in our hearts each and every year

"It's OK for people to go out and have a good time on a holiday like Cinco de Mayo — at least they have some sense that it's some kind of a Mexican holiday," García said
We should have Cinco de Mayo events that go beyond partying and drinking

While some major U.S. cities canceled planned events because of immigration crackdown fears, Detroiters went ahead with the city's 60th annual parade on Sunday

Here's what to know about Cinco de Mayo in 2025
although many cities hosted celebrations over the weekend
Why people celebrate Cinco de Mayo?Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army's victory over the Second French Empire
The Battle at Puebla occurred more than 50 years after the country broke free of Spanish rule
The reason the battle happened in the first place was because French Emperor Charles-Louis Napoléon Bonaparte wanted to claim Mexico for himself
The French sent troops to force President Benito Juárez and the government out of Veracruz
The Mexicans prevailed at the end of the day
He was elected President of the French Second Republic in 1848
He turned his presidency into an imperial title thanks to a coup on Dec

"There is nothing to celebrate,” Hector Escobar, president of Casa Puebla and the Cermak Road Chamber of Commerce told the Chicago Sun-Times. “People are afraid
Additionally a celebration in Flint was canceled due to inclement weather, according to MLive
despite the political climate and rainy weather

We have not canceled and a cancellation has not gone through our mind
and so that's something they've asked us to continue," Elizabeth "Lisa" Gonzalez

the volunteer group behind the Cinco de Mayo Parade told the Free Press
but said he believed it was because of bad weather

Iowa — A day that started with Caitlin Clark’s triumphant return to Carver-Hawkeye Arena ended with the WNBA basking in the spotlight
No Iowa athlete in the last 80 years can match Clark’s impact
and that was on full display from the parking lot tailgates four hours before tipoff to the 117-decibel explosion when she connected on her first 3-pointer Sunday afternoon
Tickets for Indiana Fever’s exhibition — a 108-44 win against the Brazilian national team — sold out in 24 minutes and nearly every row in the 14,998-seat arena featured a No

“I felt like a Hawkeye today,” Mitchell said
It was good connecting back with college students from walking across the campus yesterday
but they’re also going to be here cheering for you and our entire team
I think that’s what’s so great about these fans
is they really rally around the entire team.”
It’s not an unprecedented move for the WNBA to play exhibitions on college campuses
the Las Vegas Aces and A’ja Wilson played one at South Carolina
the Brazilian national team competed against the Chicago Sky at LSU
which Sky forward Angel Reese led to the 2023 national title
Iowa ranked second in NCAA women’s basketball attendance in each of the last two seasons
and the second of which didn’t involve Clark
the Hawkeyes sold out every home game and nearly every road environment
She became the most popular athlete in college sports and the Hawkeyes’ NCAA championship loss to South Carolina picked up 18.9 million viewers — 4.1 million more than the men’s championship game that year
it’s natural for the WNBA to bring its product to Iowa City
Iowa women’s basketball fans immediately followed the Fever when Clark became the No
Interest in the WNBA soared with fans buying subscriptions to the league’s app to watch the Fever and other teams
summer sports conversations that once revolved around the Chicago Cubs or St
Louis Cardinals shifted to the Fever or Las Vegas Aces
which former Hawkeyes Megan Gustafson and Kate Martin called home last year
Hundreds of Iowa fans traveled to Minnesota last August to watch a Friday-Saturday doubleheader featuring the Lynx playing the Aces and Fever
Many others have made the trip to Indianapolis
But that’s not the same as seeing the teams at home
The Fever coming to Iowa City as a testament to Clark’s popularity acknowledged the interest and can pay major dividends for the team and the league
“We have great college basketball fan bases throughout the country that deserve an opportunity to witness these women doing what they do at the highest level,” said Fever coach Stephanie White
who played at Purdue and has broadcast numerous games at Carver-Hawkeye Arena
“I love these kinds of environments and opportunities for our team
for our league and to bring special talents back home.”
Fever shooting guard Lexie Hull rocked a Clark Iowa No
22 T-shirt to the arena as a nod to her teammate and friend
I was so excited to see it firsthand,” Hull said
you see all the clips or you see the decal on the floor
but being here is a whole different story.”

Clark was the star attraction and hundreds of youngsters mobbed her after the game for autographs just like when she was a student
She scored 16 points and donned the exact Nike brand Bruce Lee Kobes like she did for every big Iowa game
But her Fever uniform contains a splash of red
which serves as a metaphorical connection that the future isn’t just black-and-gold for Iowa’s WNBA fans
“Just the way that Caitlin has not only gotten Iowa people together
it’s just amazing,” Fever forward Sophie Cunningham said
“For us to come back and have them celebrate where she’s at
I think that’s such a smart move for Iowa and the WNBA
but also let’s bring them home so people can celebrate them at the pro level

Hundreds of people gathered Saturday at Bethany Park in Kansas City
for the Central Avenue Betterment Assocation’s annual Cinco De Mayo celebration
the event has been a chance for Mexican residents of the Kansas City metro to celebrate their culture and share it with others outside their communities
Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials among the area’s Latino population
making many afraid of attending public events
executive director of the local organization
said those fears led to a significant drop in vendor applications for this year’s event
the group decided to expand this year’s celebration in a different way
“We are suffering because our families are being separated
because our loved ones are being arrested,” Galicia said
most importantly we want to show ourselves
In addition to its live music and dance performances
the celebration also included a two-hour rally
including immigration attorneys and advocates
all of whom had strong ties to the KCK Latino community
“We wanted to invest time in bringing a message to the community of hope
“Understanding our strengths will give us the opportunity to continue working on ourselves and invest in ourselves.”
The speakers largely focused on the resilience of the area’s large Mexican-American community in the face of a more hostile political climate
but many also brought their own individual messages to those gathered
a Latino community advocate and small-business owner
focused her message on a popular saying in American Latino communities: “No soy de aquí ni soy de allá.” It means
“I’m not from here and I’m not from there.”
She said the phrase has resonated with many of the people she’s met during her time working for groups like the Guadalupe Centers
It's also a saying she believes needs reframing to help those who identify with it remember the power and joy that can be found in their heritage
“I think we've slightly forgotten that because of the fear that this new presidential cycle has brought upon us.”
Palacios also had a message for those who do not have this shared cultural heritage
they are the people best able to help those gripped by fear
“It’s important that people outside of our communities who enjoy our food
who enjoy the essence that we bring,” Palacios said
“remember that they also have a part to play in ensuring that we can live and grow in the same space and benefit one another.”
The rally’s keynote speaker was Earl Watson Jr., a KCK native, former NBA player and first Hispanic head coach in the history of the NBA
the person he credits with instilling in him the pride he has in his heritage
“I've been on stages in these types of environments my entire life,” Watson said
“My mom used to make me go on stage when I was in grade school to dance
To have an opportunity to come back and actually reflect on my culture
the representation of my family… I think it’s a beautiful moment.”
Watson focused much of his personal message on the need for Latinos in all spaces to recapture the national narrative about themselves in this moment
that the demonization of Latinos and immigrants is not new
“We can't let others capture our narrative and put it on a platform with no response,” Watson said
“I especially want to encourage all elected leaders who have Latinos in their staff or in their workplace to uplift these Latino soldiers
We have to represent all and not just the elite.”
As the region’s Latino population continues to grow
organizers with CABA hope these events continue to grow with it
that hope is still heavily mixed with fears for what the future under the current presidential administration holds for her community
she finds comfort in events like Saturday’s rally – if only because they remind her she and her family are not alone
Mexican-heritage individuals in this country than there ever have been,” Palacios said
then it behooves us to remind ourselves of how many we are

There is a synthetic turf and high school-sized soccer field
The total cost of the project was $3,951,964
with Sarasota County contributing $500,000

STAFFORD — A very important question to ask a venue when you are enjoying their establishment: “Would you share your favorite thing about your venue?”
Jordan has found that the guides are stumped for a few seconds and then come up with very interesting things like:
• A program from Ford’s Theatre the night Abraham Lincoln was killed — with President Lincoln’s blood on it
Our’s here at the library would have to be the stained glass window of Nora Larabee
with the evening sun making it turn sparkly and throwing rainbows all through the library
Our Kansas Celebration Friday night had many highlights:
• Janet Hardin singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and then leading us in “Home On the Range.”
• Jordan Roemerman sharing unique places to visit in Kansas
• A fantastic meal provided by the Culinary Class of Stafford High School
• Sharing an evening with 50+ friends and family

Some of you might be eagerly looking forward to the holiday
and others might be awaiting festivities without really knowing why you are partaking in them
In case you’re unaware of the significance of the day and why it occurs annually
here’s a quick refresher on the basics of Cinco de Mayo so you and your friends have information about how to observe the holiday in a respectful way
Cinco de Mayo, which translates to the fifth of May and is celebrated on May 5, is a holiday recognizing when the Mexican army claimed victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War on May 5, 1862, according to History
After defeating the Spaniards in 1821 and losing the Mexican American War in 1848
French Emperor Napoleon III sent his troops to Mexico to force President Benito Juárez and the government out of Veracuz so he could claim Mexican territory for himself
Charles Latrille de Lorencez set out to attack Puebla de Los Angeles
Juárez was able to round up 2,000 loyal men for the cause and sent them to Puebla
Ignacio Zaragoza were able to hold off the French from daybreak until evening and eventually came out victorious
This victory boosted the Mexican army’s morale and national pride
resulting in Juárez later declaring May 5 a national holiday once he resumed his presidency

When is Mother's Day 2025?: Here's some help in finding the ultimate gift
including people of Mexican American heritage
Cinco de Mayo is not to be confused with Mexico’s Independence Day
Mexico’s Independence Day (Día de la Independencia) is celebrated on Sept
16 and is the anniversary of the revolutionary priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla’s famous “Grito de Dolores” (“Cry of Dolores,” referring to the city of Dolores Hidalgo
The “Grito de Dolores” was a call to arms that led to a declaration of war against the Spanish colonial government in 1810
parades and reenactments of the 1862 battle
Most of the rest of the country does not recognize the holiday
Although margaritas have since become synonymous with Cinco de Mayo, the first celebrations on the anniversary didn’t include margaritas, which weren’t invented until the 1940s, according to the Smithsonian Institution
In the mid-20th century United States, Cinco de Mayo celebrations were established among Mexican immigrants as a way of encouraging pride in their heritage. Enthusiasm for the holiday among other demographics did not increase until Cinco de Mayo began to focus on the promotion of Mexican alcoholic beverages, according to Britannica.
festivities related to Cinco de Mayo tend to promote excessive drinking and perpetuate negative stereotypes of Mexicans
Mexican folk dancing and traditional foods like mole poblano and tacos
particularly in areas with large Mexican American populations
Houston and Los Angeles are cities hosting a few of the largest festivals in the country
Aside from Mexican American populations wanting to share information about their heritage and celebrate their culture
Cinco de Mayo was widely discussed by Chicano activists in the 1960s
Chicano activists typically identified with the victory of Indigenous Mexicans over European invaders during the Battle of Puebla
Celebrating Cinco de Mayo can be a fun celebration for people of all backgrounds
but it is important to recognize that commemorating Mexican culture and heritage — the true meaning of the holiday — is very different than culturally appropriating it
cultural appropriation is the “adoption of certain language
clothing or tradition belonging to a minority culture or social group by a dominant culture or group in a way that is exploitative
Actions like wearing a feathered headdress to a festival
a cultural action for Native American and Indigenous peoples
or wearing a culture’s traditional garb as a Halloween costume
are ways a group’s culture can be appropriated
cultural appreciation describes a care and interest in respecting a culture
Examples include wearing traditional clothing to an Indian wedding or dressing up to participate in an authentic event celebrate the heritage of a group
Cultural appropriation in relation to a holiday like Cinco de Mayo includes wearing a sombrero or other Mexican cultural garb in a way that mocks or is a caricature of those with Mexican heritage
mimicking stereotypes of Mexican people or contributing to prejudice against those of Mexican descent in any way
If you would like to honor Cinco de Mayo differently this year on Sunday
consider learning more about traditional Mexican cuisine and trying some out for yourself
supporting local Mexican-owned businesses or attending local cultural events
Reminder: If you do partake in drinking activities on May 5
do not drive under the influence or get in a vehicle driven by someone under the influence
Rideshare services such as Lyft and Uber are widely available and often offer discounts or emergency rides on holidays
where there is a large increase in drinking
