I grew up in the shopping centers of the San Gabriel Valley, their bright lights and maze-like parking lots serving as the colorful backdrop of my Chinese American childhood.
My mother once chased an unruly grocery cart that held me in its front basket as it rolled through the parking lot of the Victorian-looking strip mall at the corner of San Gabriel Boulevard and New Avenue. I remember racing my younger sister up and down the stairs of the Atlantic Place Shopping Center while we waited for a table at my grandmother’s favorite dim sum restaurant.
There were countless days spent as a child under the care of my uncle and grandmother, who brought us along to three, sometimes four strip malls in a day to find the various ingredients needed for that evening’s dinner, beauty products, the Hello Kitty pencil box I desperately needed and egg tarts.

‘When it came to setting the show somewhere
It was the same story for countless Asian Americans growing up in the San Gabriel Valley, where 13 of the 14 Asian-majority suburbs in Los Angeles County are located
These strip malls were a way for residents to create a stronghold in their communities
markets and other businesses that catered to an Asian clientele
a gleaming display of resilience that often functions as its own ecosystem

a multistory strip mall adjacent to the Hilton Hotel on Valley Boulevard in San Gabriel
a wooden trellis that lines the second and third floors of the complex and a fountain in three of the four corners of the center
The parking lot upstairs is a war zone I tend to avoid because of its sharp turns and car horns
the spaces are larger and the tempers milder
The Hilton Plaza is a one-stop destination for soup dumplings
nightlife and an outpost of one of L.A.’s most celebrated ramen restaurants
The spicy chicken burger from Macho Burger in San Gabriel. (Jenn Harris / Los Angeles Times) If you’re curious about the wave of chicken burger restaurants that have opened in the San Gabriel Valley over the last few years
It’s a chain with multiple locations in California
with a chicken-centric menu of chicken burgers
fried fish sandwiches and beef wraps that look a little like a Taco Bell Crunchwrap Supreme
Its red and yellow color scheme is reminiscent of the most recognizable American fast food chains
only the mascot is a cartoon character with buff arms and a sesame seed bun on top of its baseball cap
There is no ground chicken patty involved in the sandwich
a fried chicken thigh with a circumference consistently greater than its bun serves as the burger
The bun is a soft potato roll and the chicken has a thick
craggy crust heavily seasoned with black pepper
A few bites in and the chicken burger craze starts to make sense
Fish congee from Huo Zhou Wang in the Hilton Plaza. (Jennelle Fong / For The Times) It’s difficult to find congee that competes with the stuff my grandma Tina makes
But the porridge at Huo Zhou Wang may be in a category all its own
You can order the porridge studded with dried scallops
silky nuggets of fish nestled into the rice
There is no shortage of deep-fried delights to dip into your porridge
with fried rolls like mini coconut-scented doughnuts and red bean-filled sesame balls
And don’t overlook the complimentary side dishes
marinated radish that arrives mere seconds after you reach the table
Grilled fish with two flavors from Liu Roast Fish at Hilton Plaza in San Gabriel
(Jenn Harris / Los Angeles Times) The dish in front of every party is a raised platter of fish
its body submerged in a bubbling liquid that sputters all over the table
Faces are momentarily obscured behind extravagantly scented walls of steam
The fish on my table is typically black cod
with one fillet trembling in a “golden soup garlic,” and the other in “Lius homestyle.” The golden soup is savory and pungent with an astonishing amount of garlic
humming with the flavor of mellow toasted chiles
You scoop spoonfuls of the fish and sauce over white rice
with cumin-rubbed mutton and spiced quail eggs you may want to eat by the dozen
feature a sunshine yellow hue just below the wrapper
The pork filling is infused with the salty
making them about five times more satiating than your average dumpling
A bowl of noodle soup from Potato Powder Love Noodle in the Hilton Plaza in San Gabriel
(Jenn Harris / Los Angeles Times ) Each order of noodle soup arrives in its own pot
The potato noodles that bob across the top are pale and round
almost too slippery to catch between your chopsticks
the noodles may be tangled with ribbons of beef and bok choy alongside a handful of cilantro
The noodles themselves are unlike any other
with a singular texture that’s at once chewy and bouncy
There are fried mushroom skewers to round out the meal
and each order of soup or rice bowl comes with a free beverage
This is a tea shop where the most popular drink on the menu is a concoction called the Tiramisu milk tea
It’s a robust black tea mixed with milk and topped with something called tiramisu puff cream
this is the place to go for a brown sugar latte with boba after lunch
or for a cocoa drink with cheese foam and crushed Oreos after dinner
sautéed cabbage and skewers from Tang Dynasty
one of the many restaurants at the Hilton Plaza in San Gabriel
(Jennelle Fong / For The Times) I don’t know that I crave a single dish in Los Angeles more often than the stir-fried cabbage at Tang Dynasty
It’s seasoned with just the right amount of what could be black vinegar
as the main attraction or as a side dish intended to offset the meat skewers that are likely to accumulate on the table
Tang Dynasty is a restaurant that feels like a peaceful respite during the day and a roaring party when the sun goes down
with dishes and elaborately presented beverages that are meant to be shared
the glass containers filled with pink peach wine
osmanthus rice wine and whatever other flavored low A.B.V
The skewers range from garlic vermicelli scallops to Taiwanese sausage
And the salted egg yolk crab is a must order
with the fried crab enveloped in a buttery salted egg sauce you can suck from every crevice

people with best friends seem to have more fun than those without
In my twenties I chased the thrill of a big sweeping romance
to finding the peak book boyfriend; a good romance novel was my ultimate read
I’ve started to pay more attention to the female friendships in books
are usually nothing more than sub plots: the voice of reason in the narrator’s ear
or a necessary distraction from the heartache of the ensuing love story
these friendships that have the more real-life appeal for me now
A platonic female friendship comes without the baggage of sex
The companionship of a reliable female confidante seems far more likely to survive the test of time than settling with a romantic partner where the story arc was based purely on sexual chemistry
But the usual romance tropes could apply to stories of friendship too: Enemies to Friends
is something more believable and achievable in the real world
It is this particular kind of kinship that intrigues me; finding the right set of women to surround myself with
the joyful denouement of finding the friendships that become integral to life
What I need now is an Emily Henry for female friendships
Elena Ferrante, My Brilliant Friend
this modern masterpiece is the perfect example of the female friendship novel
motherhood are themes that play in the backdrop
while putting the friendship between Elena and Lila centerstage
Their shared story begins from age six all the way into adulthood
while they battle social prejudice and life’s many roadblocks
Their relationship evolves through the years
and is built on the foundations of deep affection
It is one of those books that I believe will affect me differently every time I read it
depending on which phase my own life is in
Catherine Newman, We All Want Impossible Things
The forty-year friendship between Edi and Ash is the kind of relationship we all want at death’s door
If terminal cancer is the diagnosis I am saddled with
but I hope I have a best friend there to make me laugh and remind me of a lifetime of inside jokes
Newman successfully captures the essence of what true friendship looks like
and she made me laugh out loud and sob in the same paragraph
An emotional release no romance novel has been able to achieve
RF Kuang, Yellowface
the bad girl is someone you have your guard up against
This is a far more realistic lesson to learn from a book
than pining for a soulmate who will probably never meet all your emotional needs
Their friendship is based on intense rivalry and envy
and their dynamic felt so real while I read this book
that it seemed like only a heightened version of what most women have experienced in their own lives with their female friends
There is something delicious about rooting for the un-happy ending of all the characters in a book
Sally Rooney, Conversations with Friends
this is one of those books that saddles the fence between a romance and a friendship novel
While the plot seems to center around college student Frances’ affair with married man Nick
I was more interested in her relationship with best friend Bobbi
The plot is further complicated by the fact that Frances and Bobbi used to be lovers
but this was the dynamic that kept me most engaged
Something a lot of readers experience after reading any of Rooney’s work is: seen
which this novel in particular seems to effortlessly achieve
I believe this has less to do with Frances’ affair with a married man
and more to do with her complex friendship with Bobbi
Kristin Hannah, Firefly Lane
Kate and Tully’s friendship is the central plot of this rare kind of novel
and has the same emotional bulk of any romance drama
A journey that takes us through the lives of these two women over three decades
this was an accurate depiction of friendship
the kind all of us would be blessed to have
Many non-romances have historically been marketed as coming-of-age novels
it might be time now to give them the pride of place as a female friendship novel

The Grainger College of Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is launching a center to develop new additive manufacturing methods for large metal parts
The center will have a $9.06 million budget
including an $8.15 million award from the U.S
The new methods and technologies developed will allow the military to quickly manufacture large parts as needed for its fleet of ground vehicles
Under the leadership of Illinois Grainger Engineering mechanical science and engineering professor Bill King, university researchers will work with the U.S. Army through the DEVCOM Ground Vehicle Systems Center (GVSC) and the Rock Island Arsenal Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center (RIA-JMTC)
They will answer fundamental questions about large metal parts manufacturing with additive methods
and they will develop industrial processes for implementing the technology at scale.
“We are building the world’s first university research center focused on large metal additive manufacturing,” King said
“We will conduct fundamental research on material properties and part quality
and we will have a factory demonstration facility to develop new processes and technologies
Grainger Engineering is uniquely positioned to lead this center with our expertise across multiple engineering disciplines and our proven track record of delivering working solutions.”
Army’s interest in partnering with Illinois Grainger Engineering stems from its ongoing commitment to maintaining readiness and resilience through cutting-edge technologies like advanced manufacturing
As the operational landscape grows increasingly complex
the ability to manufacture large metal parts at the point of need will significantly enhance supply chain agility
and improve vehicle uptime across Army formations
the Army aims to accelerate the adoption of additive manufacturing methods that support distributed production
and integrate advanced design methodologies for faster
we remain at the forefront of advancing Army readiness by pushing the boundaries of Advanced Manufacturing
Partnering with Grainger Engineering gives us access to world-class research that will help us answer fundamental questions about large-scale metal additive manufacturing and bring those answers to bear on real-world applications,” said David Gorsich
“This collaboration is a game-changer for our capabilities at both GVSC and RIA-JMTC
It enhances our ability to produce certified
while integrating new materials and advanced design tools that reduce vehicle downtime and streamline the logistics chain,” Gorsich said.
Illinois Grainger Engineering Dean Rashid Bashir added
“The launch of this new manufacturing center
marks a significant step forward in our commitment to transforming technologies that serve our nation's defense and manufacturing sectors
we are tackling the most pressing challenges in advanced manufacturing and engineering the future through innovation
Beyond the Army and Illinois Grainger Engineering
the initiative will directly support the economy of the Quad Cities Region of western Illinois and eastern Iowa surrounding RIA-JMTC by expanding manufacturing capabilities
It is expected to positively impact the region’s small businesses and large companies.
“With today’s announced funding
the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign will be at the forefront of cutting-edge education
and development that fortifies our national defense,” U.S
“By supporting large metal additive manufacturing research in collaboration with Rock Island Arsenal
dependence on foreign manufacturing for metals
contribute more resilient ground vehicles for the Army in the future
I will continue to push for federal funding that supports national defense operations in our state.”
“It’s wonderful that this area of manufacturing strength within Illinois Grainger Engineering has connected so well with RIA-JMTC and GVSC,” University of Illinois System Vice President for Economic Development and Innovation Jay Walsh said
“This project will create huge impact for manufacturers connected to the Army’s supply chain
drive innovation in manufacturing and expand economic opportunities across the state.”
Additive manufacturing represents a paradigm shift from traditional manufacturing methods
in which parts are mass-produced in large batches then stored until needed
Traditional processes are slow and ill-equipped to respond to evolving conditions
the design is built up by continuously layering materials
and the same machine can be reprogrammed to build many different parts.
imagine that a vehicle breaks down and needs a new part which is not available in your warehouse,” King said
you would need to build a production process from scratch
Two years can pass from the order to the delivery of the first part
it prints off the part right then and there
and you know exactly where it came from and how it was made.”
While additive manufacturing has been used to manufacture metal parts in the medical and aerospace industries for years
it has only been well-studied for parts that are relatively small – typically a few inches or less
parts sized 3 feet or larger need to be made
Much less is known about how to make these larger parts
and there are open questions that need to be answered before the Defense Department adopts the technology.
The goal of the new center is to provide definite answers about the material properties and quality of large metal parts made with additive methods
The researchers will also study how to operate the machines in a way that creates high-quality parts in addition to developing support technologies related to sensing
material characterization and analysis software.
A key component of the center will be a factory demonstration facility to be constructed in the Research Park at Illinois
It will consist of two large metal printers for research and development
materials and processes to be tested in a controlled setting.
“It’s exciting that we’re going to have this capability because the costs involved in high-end manufacturing don’t often leave room for R&D,” King said
discovery and development while also addressing important
practical questions for the military.”
The center will be led by King and co-led by Sameh Tawfick, an Illinois Grainger Engineering mechanical science and engineering professor, and Magdi Azer
the associate director for manufacturing science of the Applied Research Institute in Illinois Grainger Engineering.

Returning to Feinberg’s campus brought back fond memories of her medical school experience for Carol B
which is also where she met and fell in love with her late husband
“Northwestern was a big part of my happiness,” Stelling said
“I went to Northwestern undergrad for two years and then right into medical school at the age of almost 21
I’m back here to visit friends and practice traveling and getting my wings under my feet again.”
Stelling, who currently lives in Houston and is a member of Feinberg’s Half Century Club
which recognizes alumni who graduated from Feinberg more than 50 years ago
practiced diagnostic radiology at university hospitals across the U.S
Stelling and her late husband established the Carol B
MD Scholarship Fund to support medical student scholarships at Feinberg
“I loved being at a university and teaching and having residents and fellows
and so I’m very particularly supportive of university medicine,” Stelling said
More than 480 alumni and guests returned to Feinberg’s campus on May 1-3 to reconnect with former classmates
reminisce about their medical school experiences
and learn about the medical school’s latest developments and achievements at this year’s Alumni Weekend celebration
The weekend also featured educational forums delivered by Feinberg faculty exploring the contribution of sleep health to chronic disease
neural mechanisms underlying motor deficits following unilateral brain injury
and new techniques and technologies to improve the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer
Alumni and current medical students also connected to discuss career paths during a mentoring lunch organized by medical specialty.
“I really enjoyed talking with first-year students and reminding them that research should start from an observation
that it starts in the exam room,” said Jeanne Novas Busano
who spoke with current medical students about founding and owning her own practice in obstetrics and gynecologic surgery for more than 30 years
In the afternoon, alumni joined the Northwestern Alumni Association for a live recording of Northwestern Intersections, the Northwestern Alumni Association’s podcast

psychiatry has become medicalized in a good sense,” said Gary Rusk
who participated in the podcast recording and is also chair of Feinberg’s Half Century Club committee
“Taking a history from a patient doesn’t mean going down a checklist
it means talking to the patient and eliciting how you’ll cross off that checklist but doing it in a conversational way
and if it’s a good medical school like Feinberg
that’s how you should teach students to approach patients.”
Eric G. Neilson, MD
vice president for Medical Affairs and Lewis Landsberg Dean

The company declined to answer why it decided not to continue to serve the Cleveland County jail
Cleveland County Sheriff Chris Amason said he was already planning to seek new bids for the contract before receiving the letter from TK Health
“There was some talk about the price last year — the price of the service,” Amason said
“And I think this was just the perfect opportunity for both of us to kind of evaluate what’s best for each of us.”
Amason said his office is also looking at ways to improve access to mental health care and medications at the jail
There has been a history of deaths and complaints about access to health care at the Cleveland County jail
Cleveland County District Court Judge Michael Tupper wrote to detention center officials in January after hearing complaints about poor living conditions at the jail
Two detainees complained to Cleveland County District Court Judge Thad Balkman of long waits to see a medical provider
One man told the judge he requested an appointment for a problem with his knee and waited three weeks without seeing a doctor
Amason said jail staff investigated and found the complaints to be unfounded
TK Health said it couldn’t comment on the care of individuals
The Frontier and The Marshall Project published an investigation in July 2024 that found TK Health employees didn’t send people to the hospital in dozens of cases when they were in crisis, catatonic or refusing to eat or drink
The company staffed mental health and other medical positions with low-level nursing assistants trained to perform basic tasks like taking vital signs
but not to diagnose or assess medical conditions
The investigation highlighted the 2022 death of Shannon Hanchett in the Cleveland County jail after her arrest during a mental health crisis
It took 10 days for a doctor to consult on Hanchett’s care at the jail while she was in psychosis
Hanchett’s death was caused by complications from a heart defect
with contributing factors including psychosis “with auditory and visual hallucinations” and dehydration
At least six detainees have died since the beginning of 2024 at the facility
The Cleveland County Commissioners hired a consultant last year to identify the root causes of deaths at the jail
County officials announced in March that a preliminary report would not be released publicly
claiming it was protected by attorney-client privilege

Virginia is known as the 'Data Center Capital of the World.'
WASHINGTON, May 5, 2025 — Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) has vetoed a bipartisan bill that would have added new oversight requirements for proposed data centers in Virginia
rejecting calls for increased environmental and community protections
aimed to require developers to conduct impact assessments on water resources
It also called for noise studies for schools and homes located within 500 feet of planned data center sites
“This bill limits local discretion and creates unnecessary red tape,” Youngkin said in a veto statement
the legislation imposes a one-size-fits-all approach on communities that are best positioned to make their own decisions.”
The veto drew swift criticism from residents and lawmakers
said data center noise and environmental strain have already disrupted many communities
“It’s just a shame both parties have failed the residents of Virginia on this one,” she said
Delegate Thomas also criticized the governor’s decision
accusing him of siding with corporate interests
“Glenn Youngkin has once again prioritized big tech profits over the well-being of Virginia residents,” Thomas said in a statement
which Youngkin referred to as the “Data Center Capital of the World,” is home to a large concentration of data centers
with state officials touting their economic benefits — including an estimated 74,000 jobs
rapid expansion has sparked growing concerns over land use
opponents of the veto say they plan to reintroduce the legislation in future sessions and make data center regulation a key issue in the upcoming gubernatorial election

WorldPride organizers say they decided to move events out of the Kennedy Center after the venue became inhospitable
“We saw the writing on the wall,” Capital Pride Alliance Executive Director Ryan Bos told The Advocate
With WorldPride just days away from kicking off in Washington, D.C.
Capital Pride Alliance organizers are pushing back against misinformation — and clarifying what really happened with the Kennedy Center
Capital Pride Alliance Executive Director Ryan Bos told The Advocate that organizers proactively pulled events from the "inhospitable" environment once it became clear the venue would not be a safe or inclusive space
“We would not be allowed to have any official drag programming,” Bos said
“That defeats the purpose of Pride — in terms of creating a welcoming and safe environment for anybody to feel comfortable being their true
“If someone doesn’t feel comfortable being their true
then that’s not the venue or space where we want to have an event.”
In a widely circulated April 25 story, the Associated Press reported that “organizers and the Kennedy Center have canceled a week’s worth of events” tied to the Tapestry of Pride program
Some artists and producers told the AP their events were abruptly dropped
Bos says that the organizers decided to move three WorldPride events
The Kennedy Center has not responded to requests for comment from multiple news organizations
Trump loyalist and former ambassador Richard Grenell
who is gay and currently appointed as interim executive director of the Kennedy center
of lying in a social media post tagging this reporter’s inactive account
But you don’t care about facts,” Grenell tweeted after the story was published
and visitor info in partnership with Destination DC
Bos told The Advocate that relocating events was also about protecting that visibility
“Just because we’re having a concert and parties does not mean we’re not protesting,” he said
“These are all forms of protest because our community continues to be told we’re not of value
So anytime we can create a safe space for members of our community to be their authentic selves and do it — it’s a form of defiance.”
Organizers say the June 8 International March on Washington will move forward as planned
on the National Mall and marching through downtown D.C
“This is the only venue we removed events from,” Bos said
“And the ability to move things says a lot about what truly makes D.C
Bos kept it simple when asked what allies can do to support the community during WorldPride: “Show up
It’s for everybody to come to a space that is created to allow people to be their authentic selves
data center site applicants would have to perform and submit site assessments to examine the noise impact on residents and schools located within 500 feet of the property
It would also allow local governments to require site assessments from applicants to examine the effect of the data center on water and agricultural resources
Del. Josh Thomas (D-Prince William County), introduced HB1601 which he designated as Virginia’s first data center reform bill
“It’s incredibly disappointing to see Governor Youngkin ignore our community’s concerns in favor of rapid
unconstrained data center development that threatens our homes and schools
and our way of life,” Thomas said in a statement
In his explanation for the veto
Youngkin said the bill limits local discretion and creates unnecessary red tape
the legislation imposes a one-size-fits-all approach on communities that are best positioned to make their own decisions,” Youngkin wrote
Rapid growth of cloud computing and artificial intelligence has caused demand for data centers to balloon in recent years
Northern Virginia alone houses more than 300 data centers in the area’s westernmost counties
Thomas said he’s going to continue to fight for the issue
“Today is not the end – it’s only the beginning
we succeeded in bringing a bipartisan majority of Virginia legislators together to pass real data center reform
and that is a victory we can build on in the future
I remain wholly committed to fighting for western Prince William County on this issue,” Thomas said

Billy Idol annihilated Moody Center with his signature sneer during a stopover in Austin supported by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts Sunday
the king and queen of choosing distinct punk hairstyles in the early ‘80s and sticking with them for decades to come
brought back the hits for the third stop on their It’s A Nice Day To… Tour Again
Here are five things that impressed us at the show
The set list gem was her cover of “Androgynous” by the Replacements
so I’m going to sing it for you now,” Jett said
Jett’s a pro. She's all business when executing live shows. That comes with being a career rock star. At one point, she closed her eyes, listened for the cue and then a grin spread across her face before she launched into “Bad Reputation” (1980)
She gave us a wink before her hallmark guitar solo
He still throws his fist in the air as the big riff comes during each song
Billy Idol trotted onto the stage clad in a red leather jacket
silver chains and a sick sneer stapled to his face
The English singer’s massive visage towered over the stage on LED screens like Big Brother
and the 69-year-old was already peeling off his shirt
"We've got a new album out at the moment," Idol told the audience
"It's number two in the album charts in Germany
You never know when you're making an album what the (expletive) gonna happen with it
You just got to do what you think is good."
He wore black leather pants and his silver lip ring shimmied as he chewed gum throughout the set
Both Billy Idol and his guitarist for three decades were nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year but didn't make the cut
Stevens has played for the likes of Michael Jackson
Stevens claimed center stage with some Spanish style guitar
As his fingers ran along the neck of his guitar like a stallion on a racetrack
He gave us a little tease of the guitar riff from Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" as a joke
sticking his tongue out to the crowd before going back to shredding
Smoke billowed out around Stevens as he strummed faster and faster
You could almost imagine the smoke emanating from his fingers
Idol pulled out a couple covers for his Moody Center setlist. He included his 1981 cover of "Mony Mony" by Tommy James & the Shondells, but the duet between Idol and backup vocalist Kitten Kuroi on Rose Royce's "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" really stole the show
"Last year, we put out a Rebel Yell extended that had a few tracks that didn't make it to the original," Idol said
"One of them was a cover of a Rose Royce song
a soul ballad from the '70s that I heard one day
thinking it would go on the Rebel Yell album
but then I found out that Madonna was doing it on her 'Like A Virgin' album."
So I thought we would leave it and come back to it another time
The only thing that was missing was a bit of a guitar solo
but Steve put a blistering one on at the end
who is mostly known for backing up Elvis Costello
Kuroi tore up those soul vocals with a force I've never heard before
closing the show with "Rebel Yell," with "Dancing With Myself" and "White Wedding" saved for the encore
The savvy concertgoer knows you should never leave a show early
Those of us who stayed after the house lights came on were treated to a surprise for Steve Stevens
The crew brought out a cake with candles for the guitarist to blow out onstage
singing "Happy Birthday to You" for Stevens before he embraced Idol
and the performers gave one final wave goodnight

Insight and analysis on the data center space from industry thought leaders
Pairing small modular reactors with natural gas generators could deliver reliable data center power in just 24 months
and you can’t build data centers without access to power
Traditionally, data centers have relied on the grid for primary power and Tier II diesel generators for backup. However, grid power is becoming a bottleneck due to the combination of current load growth and the anticipated increase in data center demand
backup diesel generators face mounting challenges from increasingly strict air quality regulations
particularly on large data center campuses
One solution is to combine the advantages of small nuclear power plants, known as small modular reactors (SMRs)
with the speed and operational flexibility of reciprocating natural gas generators (RNGG)
these technologies give data center developers power in 24 months and a clear path to long-term
Lower Upfront Costs: SMRs are less expensive to build and involve lower capital risk compared to traditional large-scale reactors
Speed to Market: SMRs can be deployed within 3-4 years
Enhanced Safety: SMRs are designed to cool themselves without the need for external power
High Reliability: Utilizing multiple reactors provides greater reliability and redundancy
Flexibility: Their smaller size allows for the synchronized development of energy infrastructure alongside digital infrastructure
Compact Footprint: SMRs require only 3-4 acres of land per reactor
making them suitable for space-constrained sites
Related:Welcome to the Era of the Nuclear-Powered Data Center
Reliable and Cost-Effective: RNGGs are reliable
Lower Emissions: RNGGs produce more than 98% fewer emissions compared to traditional Tier II diesel backup solutions
Rapid Start Capability: RNGGs offer fast start times
and provide diesel-like transient response
Supply Chain: In contrast to large-frame natural gas turbines
which are currently experiencing supply chain delays that extend into 2029
RNGGs (ranging from 3 MW to 20 MW each) offer modular scalability to achieve installations of several hundred megawatts
with commercial operation timelines as short as 18 to 24 months
Fuel Efficiency: RNGGs boast a superior fuel efficiency profile compared to simple-cycle gas turbines and avoid significant performance degradation in high ambient temperatures
Cleaner Energy Transition: RNGGs represent a substantial step toward cleaner power solutions
Related:Nuclear-Powered Data Centers: When Will SMRs Finally Take Off?
Combining RNGG and SMRs gives data centers a faster path to revenue
Based on a data center signing a power-purchase agreement to get access to power on an agreed schedule
here’s a phased plan to achieve 1 GW of power infrastructure on 60 acres:
Phase 2 (48 months): Add two SMRs (capacities range from 50 to 100 MWe each)
Phase 3 (60+ months): Continue adding SMRs until reaching 1 GW of capacity
the RNGG becomes the resource that provides both load following
needed capacity back to the local community
The small size and modularity of RNGGs and SMRs enable data center developers to synchronize energy infrastructure with digital infrastructure
making projects less risky and more capital efficient
Alternative approaches to powering the load growth fall short for reasons that are well understood
Related:Data Centers Bypassing the Grid to Obtain the Power They Need
Other industry leaders think the solution is to build new wind and solar plants
Wind turbines and solar panels don’t produce emissions while operating
But there are at least three problems with wind and solar:
The places that are rich in wind and solar resources are located far from the places where developers want to build data centers
Bridging the distance will require new transmission lines
and building those lines will likely take much longer and cost much more than many developers want
Wind and solar plants require huge amounts of land
they destroy natural habitats and spark community backlash
Wind and solar are intermittent power sources
wind and solar cannot supply the 24/7 power that the data center requires
Large nuclear plants could solve the problem
and produce less waste than the alternatives
The challenge is that large nuclear projects typically take 10 plus years to build and require tens of billions of dollars in capital
regulated utilities have been the main entities developing nuclear power plants
Few CEOs are willing to bet their companies – and their jobs – on that kind of project
the race for AI supremacy has already begun
The combined strengths of SMR and RNGG enable speed to market and clean
Whoever embraces this strategy first will win the race
