Chaska Police released body camera video from an April encounter with a driver who took off from officers alongside the road
It’s a rare look into the split decision whether police should chase after a driver who runs from officers
“It spells out what I call a balancing test—the officer has to ask themselves what is the greatest danger—is it the pursuit itself,” said Chaska Police Chief Ryan Seibert
“Or is it delayed apprehension of the offender?”
The video shows Chaska Police officers responding to a suspicious vehicle call in a neighborhood on April 13th at 3 p.m
when they questioned him alongside the road in his car
After officers ran the name the driver gave them into their system
but the Chaska officers did not give chase
“We don’t have that violent felony
nor do we have egregious driving conduct,” Chief Seibert said
The chief says this encounter did not meet the department’s policy to give chase
“Public safety is paramount in every decision that we make—in whether to engage,” said Chief Seibert
“A vehicular pursuit is no different.”
It turns out that the driver was arrested by the police at a later point
The vehicle in the video was later found abandoned in a different city
Chaska Police said the driver called the department and tried to get his vehicle
he ended up getting arrested by the police
The 33-year-old male driver in the video had outstanding warrants in Ramsey County

An Eden Prairie woman who teaches kindergarten in Chaska is facing a gross misdemeanor charge after allegedly using excessive force to restrain a 5-year-old student at a local elementary school last fall
in Carver County District Court with one count of malicious punishment of a child
She is not in custody and is scheduled to make her first court appearance on May 16
A school staff member reported seeing Swirski-Lubin carry a student in her arms and then slam a door when told to put the child down
Surveillance footage reviewed by the school’s principal and police appeared to show Swirski-Lubin grabbing the child by the shoulders in the gym
and using her arms to hold the student across the chest
The footage also showed Swirski-Lubin crossing her legs over the child’s body as other teachers ushered students out of the gym
she continued to restrain the student on the ground for an extended period of time
She was later seen picking the child up and carrying her through the building – up stairs
down multiple hallways – and into a classroom
prompting Swirski-Lubin to toss her upward to maintain her hold
The school principal told police the student was not acting out or posing a threat and that the holds used by Swirski-Lubin are not permitted by school policy
She is not certified in Crisis Prevention Intervention
a training program for safe physical interventions
is not on an individualized education plan and has no known behavioral or mental health diagnoses
Swirski-Lubin declined to give a statement to law enforcement through her attorney
she faces up to 364 days in jail and a $3,000 fine
The Salisbury Zoo will soon bid a heartfelt farewell to one of its most cherished residents
will be relocating to the Alexandria Zoo in Louisiana in early May as part of a carefully planned move to support her long-term care and the future of Andean bears at the Salisbury Zoo
In honor of Chaska’s many years in Salisbury
the Zoo invites the community to a special celebration during Earth Day on Saturday
This event will feature special enrichment activities for Chaska and opportunities to learn about Andean bears and their conservation
Chaska came to the Salisbury Zoo in 2013 from the Smithsonian’s National Zoo
she has been a significant part of the Zoo’s animal family and breeding efforts
Chaska has been housed with two different male bears and is the proud mother of four cubs — two singletons and a set of twins
Her cubs have been placed in zoos around the world
contributing to the genetic diversity of the species in human care
Chaska is no longer recommended for breeding under the Andean Bear Species Survival Plan
This decision is based on her lineage being well-represented in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ population
To ensure her comfort and safety during the transition
has been hired to carry out her relocation
Chaska’s move will make way for the construction of the zoo’s new Andean bear exhibit
a major development that will occupy the current Andean bear and former North American otter exhibit space
All resident bears are being relocated to facilitate demolition and construction for this upgrade
Chaska has played an important role in the Salisbury community and has left a lasting impact on zoo guests and staff
"but it marks an exciting new chapter as the zoo looks ahead to continuing its commitment to Andean bear conservation and education."
Ponzetti's Pizza to close permanently: Beloved Salisbury restaurant Ponzetti's Pizza to close permanently at end of April
All about Andean bearsAndean bears (also known as spectacled bears) are the only bear species native to South America
inhabiting the Andes Mountains and surrounding ranges from western Venezuela to Bolivia
and are known as the most arboreal of all bears — often building nests high in treetops
The Salisbury Zoo partners with Andean Bear SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction) and remains committed to global conservation efforts for this vulnerable species
as classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature
Their primary threats include habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict
Zoo visitors can help support Andean bear conservation in a simple yet impactful way: by purchasing Bird Friendly certified coffee
which is grown using methods that preserve habitat for bears
This eco-friendly coffee is available in the zoo’s gift shop
The Salisbury Zoo encourages the public to visit in the coming weeks to say goodbye to Chaska and take part in her farewell celebration

Monday’s overnight shift was coming to an end for Chaska Police Sgt
Kyle Hance when a fire call came across the scanner
Hance’s body camera captured him running past flames on the side of a home on Judith Drive one moment and then going inside the smoky home to try and find 79-year-old Joyce Maxine Adams
“Thank god,” said Joyce Adams when she thought back to seeing Sgt
Joyce said she heard the smoke alarms going off as she got to her walker and tried to get out
she probably couldn’t make it down the steep front steps that she normally uses a life chair to go down
from my perspective,” said Scott Adams
Scott said he was at work at the time of the fire
called 911 and used a fire extinguisher to try and knock out some flames while waiting for help
“It was all really heroic thing to think about
I’ll be honest with you,” Scott said
“It’s emotional if wasn’t for my wife
I’m so thankful everything turned out the way it did.”
Joyce and her family are figuring out where she’ll stay once she’s out from the hospital after the fire

The top-seeded Eden Prairie girls basketball team saw its season end unexpectedly Saturday with a 66-64 overtime loss to unranked Chaska in the sectional tournament at Eden Prairie High School
The loss marked a stunning turnaround from the teams’ previous meeting
when Eden Prairie defeated Chaska by 31 points
and we shot the ball very poorly,” said Eagles head coach Ellen Wiese
The Eagles struggled offensively throughout the contest
shooting just 37% from the field and making only one of 10 attempts from 3-point range
Wiese attributed some of the shooting woes to the pressure of being the favorite
you get tight as the game progresses and you are not pulling away as expected.”
Senior captain Tori Schlagel led the Eagles with 23 points on 7-of-21 shooting and a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line
Fellow senior captain Rae Ehrman added 16 points
and had a chance to win the game in regulation with 1.2 seconds remaining and the score tied at 57
Senior captain Vanessa Jordan contributed 11 points in the loss
Eden Prairie completed a strong regular season with a 21-5 record that included an exciting overtime battle with Hopkins and victories over Lake Conference rivals Minnetonka and Wayzata
Wiese emphasized that the unexpected sections exit shouldn’t overshadow what the team – particularly its senior class – accomplished this season
“This group of seniors were exceptional role models for our youth,” Wiese said
They approached everything they did with class
Wiese acknowledged the challenge facing returning players
“Their legacy at EPHS is secure,” Wiese said of the departing seniors
“and all I will say about those returning is that they have huge shoes to fill

Brainerd’s Allison Thomes scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds
but the Warriors shot 33.3% from the field
Brainerd head coach Troy Nelson still feels good about his team finishing sixth at state
“I told the girls that today did not turn out how we were hoping,” he said
“We would’ve loved to come out with a win today
but if I would’ve told them the first day of practice that we were going to finish sixth place at state
but I’m super proud of our effort and our seniors.”
Senior Mya Tautges recorded eight points and seven rebounds on 4-19 shooting
including a last-second 3-pointer in the second half for the Warriors’ last basket of the season
Autumn Schiller was the third senior for the Warriors and played the last 1:14
“All of them bought into the program and what we do,” Nelson said
They wanted to win and did what it took to win
Chaska went on a 15-7 run to end the first half and take a 34-25 advantage
She scored eight of Chaska’s first 10 points of the second half

but 11 Chaska players found the scoring column in the win
“They had a special bond and we got along super well
I’m going to remember all the history they made and the relationships we made.”

Chaska senior Ella Keenan has spent more time in doctors' offices than on the court this season but her buzzer-beater and determination led the Hawks to the state tournament.
The score was tied in overtime with only a few seconds remaining. The moment was tense but also stunning, considering the Chaska girls basketball team had lost to Eden Prairie by 31 points in December. Now the Hawks had a final shot to upset the No. 1 seed in the Class 4A, Section 2 semifinals March 1.
In the timeout huddle, senior Ella Keenan told a teammate not to even look for her because she figured she would be blanketed by two defenders. But when Eden Prairie switched on a screen, Keenan raced to an opening in the lane.
She grabbed a pass, turned, shot … and touched off a celebration.
“That was such a cool moment for Ella,” Chaska coach Samantha Canter said. “Just with everything that she has gone through.”
Keenan’s journey to that game-winning shot and the Class 4A tournament that starts Wednesday has been marked with setbacks and frustration, countless doctor visits and scary episodes on the court.
She wouldn’t have even been on the floor in the final seconds of that Eden Prairie game if she hadn’t begged her coaches to put her back in. She went to the bench before halftime after feeling disoriented.
Keenan has been diagnosed with a condition called autonomic system dysfunction that causes her to experience vertigo symptoms during practices and games.
She becomes lightheaded, pale, trembly. Sometimes her vision goes dark for a few seconds, or her eyes will cross without her knowing it.
“I’m in my own little bubble almost,” she said.
One game, she lunged on the court for a loose ball and couldn’t get up. It was if she was frozen, still conscious but just “stuck” in place.
On Senior Night, she was running down court to play defense, began stumbling and fell into the arms of a referee, who caught her before she hit the floor.
That was the final day of January. Her season came to a halt. Finding answers to her health problems became the only priority.
“We got home and said, ‘This is not normal,’” her dad Brad said.
The timeline of Keenan’s health challenges began during her freshman year when a case of COVID-19 led to a discovery of vestibular system dysfunction. Essentially, her inner ear network was not functioning correctly, which caused vertigo symptoms. Physical therapy helped her feel normal again.
She began her senior year healthy and hopeful. A series of ankle injuries in recent years had provided clarity: Keenan is a standout post player who dreamed of playing college basketball, but she decided her body could not handle the physical rigors. She planned to make the most of her final season.
“I just realized I had to prioritize my health and my mental health, too,” she said.
A bout of pneumonia in the fall caused her vertigo symptoms to return. Physical therapy helped again. She felt normal for the most part but occasionally experienced symptoms in practice.
A case of strep throat in December exacerbated her symptoms. She’d lose her balance. She suffered migraines. Her vision became impaired for a few seconds at a time.
The assumption was that everything was linked to vestibular dysfunction and feeling sick. She would pause basketball activities, feel better, return and experience symptoms again.
Her parents, Brad and Jen, kept a close eye on her on the court.
“I’m usually watching the ballgame,” her dad said. “Now I watch her. Just to make sure she’s all right.”
The near-fall on Senior Night made it clear that something more was happening than vestibular-related vertigo or lingering illness effects.
The family already had appointments scheduled with specialists. Keenan underwent blood work, a brain scan, heart ultrasound and electrocardiogram. She wore a heart monitor for two weeks.
She spent more time in doctor offices than classrooms in February.
“Pretty much every test imaginable,” she said.
Her cardiologist delivered the diagnosis: autonomic system dysfunction.
The best news: She is not in danger of experiencing a catastrophic event. Keenan was cleared to return to basketball.
Said Jen: “[The cardiologist] said, ‘You’re not limited by me. You’re limited by symptoms.’”
Keenan’s mom noted that Ella has a “mixed bag” of medical conditions intertwined to form a complex diagnosis. The family has been told it could take months for her body to completely regulate itself.
Her recovery time after an episode has considerably reduced. Sometimes she feels better after a few minutes of rest.
“We’re happy that her symptoms are not lasting quite as long,” her mom said, “but it’s still frustrating that they’re there.”
Keenan eased back into basketball in late February under restrictions that limited her to only a few minutes on the court at a time. Assistant coach John Thompson sits next to Keenan on the bench and looks for cues when she’s on the court to detect if she is struggling. She gives him a thumbs-up or thumbs-down signal.
“I may not have a full-blown episode, but I don’t feel like my normal self [when playing],” Keenan said. “That’s just kind of my new normal.”
“It’s worth it to play,” she said. “I love playing with my team.”
That’s why she pleaded with coaches to let her back on the court in the second half against Eden Prairie in the section semifinals. She told Thompson that she felt great and that “if this is the last game of my season, I’m not going out sitting on the bench.”
She got back in and made a shot that kept the team’s season alive. That was a thumbs-up moment.

The Chanhassen Storm won on the road at Chaska Community Center on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2025, handing the Chaska Hawks a defeat 4-1.
The visiting team took the lead early in the first period, with a goal from Logan Smith. Jack Gleason and Ryan Mcpartland assisted.
Nolan Warner scored late in the second period, assisted by Logan Smith and Ryan Mcpartland.
The Hawks narrowed the gap to 2-1 early in the third period when Donovan Madsen netted one, assisted by Tyler Schmieg and Bridger Kolesar.
Quinn Reding made it 3-1 with a goal nine minutes later, assisted by Theo Koubeck and Grayson Endres.
Jack Gleason also increased the lead to 4-1 with a goal two minutes later, assisted by Ryan Mcpartland and Nolan Warner.
The teams meet once more at Victoria Ice Arena on February 3rd.
The Hawks will play the Orono Spartans on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2025 at Crookston Pirates while the Storm will face Benilde-St. Margaret's on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025 at Victoria Ice Arena.
Quinn Meyer kicked two field goals in the third quarter and an all-important point after in overtime for Chaska.
A pair of kickers decided an overtime result in Tuesday’s Class 5A, Section 2 football quarterfinal at Waconia.
Chaska, boosted by Quinn Meyer’s two field goals and a point after that made the biggest difference of all, defeated Waconia 13-12.
With its victory, No. 5 seed Chaska (5-4) advances to the semifinal scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at defending Class 5A champion Chanhassen. Chanhassen, as the section’s top seed, relaxed through a first-round bye. Waconia (4-5) was the fourth seed.
Hawks quarterback Matthew Welter ran for the overtime touchdown. Meyer, a three-year kicking veteran who kicked two field goals in the third quarter, added the point-after attempt to seal the outcome.
”He can do the job; he’s been kicking since sophomore year,” Welter said. “He’s probably the best Chaska’s ever had. He’s stone cold.”
Waconia freshman Elijah Seim’s failed field-goal attempt ended the first half and two failed point-after attempts later played a large role in the Wildcats’ loss. His coach, Corey Shea, spoke well of Seim and his effort.
”I told him he basically saved our season because we didn’t have a kicker coming in,” Shea said. “He is an all-star on our soccer team, and he really helped us this year. There’s some work to do, but he’s a big part of our plans in the future.”
Chaska battled throughout a scoreless first half, ensured in part by a fierce wind blowing out of the north that kept the striped shirts of game officials billowing. But credit was also due to the Waconia defense, which turned back a promising first-quarter Chaska drive on fourth down.
The second half revealed neither team would be able to do its part to equal the combined 56 points scored in their regular-season meeting. Points were at a premium Tuesday. Even Meyer’s successful kicks came from distances of 51 and 26 yards out — hardly chip shots for a high school kicker.
Nickolas Theis dashed 26 yards in the fourth quarter and finally crossed the goal line for Waconia with 7:46 remaining. But Seim’s point-after attempt failed, and the score remained 6-6. Theis scored again in the extra session, but Seim couldn’t extend the Wildcats’ season.
