the Chatsworth High star and crown jewel of USC’s incoming recruiting class
was involved in a serious Cybertruck accident on Thursday morning
a person familiar with the situation who was not authorized to discuss it publicly told The Times
Arenas was in a Tesla Cybertruck early Thursday morning when the vehicle lost control near the corner of Corbin Avenue and Blythe Street in Reseda
when the Cybertruck struck a fire hydrant and tree
The 18-year-old driver was pulled from the wreckage and taken to a hospital where he was stable
according to LAPD Officer Rosario Cervantes
A source told The Times that drugs and alcohol were not involved in the crash
A tree and caution tape remain at the scene of a Cybertruck crash involving Chatsworth basketball star Alijah Arenas on Thursday. (Handout) Arenas was placed in a coma, a person with knowledge of the crash told The Times. ESPN’s Shams Charania was the first to report the crash and Arenas’ condition
Photos of the crash site obtained by The Times show the silver Cybertruck wrapped around a tree hours later, with a “no parking” sign crumpled between the two. The windshield and both driver’s side windows were shattered and a piece of hydrant was lodged underneath the broken wheel well.
Hours after the crash, the Cybertruck was taken from the scene and burst into flames at a tow yard. According to a source, the Los Angeles Fire Hazard Mat responded to the ensuing hazardous materials incident.
Alijah is the son of former NBA player Gilbert Arenas, who canceled plans to stream a new episode of his online show Thursday. His mother, Laura Govan, posted on Instagram shortly after asking for “all your … prayers.”

For USC, Alijah Arenas’ commitment marks the biggest recruiting victory of the Musselman era, the first five-star prospect to endorse the coach’s vision in L.A.
A top-10 recruit in the 2025 class, Alijah Arenas led Chatsworth High to the CIF Division II state championship game in March. He left Chatsworth as the all-time City Section scoring leader, with more than 3,000 points, and recently competed in the McDonald’s All-American game.
Arenas was slated to play a major role as a freshman at USC after choosing the Trojans over more established basketball powers such as Arizona, Kansas and Kentucky.
USC coach Eric Musselman, in a statement on social media, said that “our thoughts and prayers are with Alijah and his family following this morning’s accident. Please keep him, his teammates and friends, and the entire Arenas family in your prayers.”
Chatsworth students had the day off from school Thursday in observance of Armenian Genocide Memorial Day.

The video, recorded by a bystander, shows the officer stepping on the chicken's neck, causing the animal to flap uncontrollably.
A Chatsworth police officer is under fire after a video surfaced of him killing a chicken in the street, sparking outrage among community members.
Julie Wooten, founder of Waddle On Inn Rescue, condemned the officer's actions as inhumane.
"It was gut-wrenching," Wooten said. "This went on for over 15 minutes, and that should have never happened."
The video, recorded by a bystander, shows the officer stepping on the chicken's neck, causing the animal to flap uncontrollably.
Wooten described the scene, stating, "He was literally crushing trachea on this chicken. It was a slow and very painful death."
Wooten, who has operated her rescue for nearly a decade, noted that she has never seen a chicken treated so poorly.
"Even chickens in Georgia are protected under animal cruelty laws, and that is a clear case of animal cruelty," she said.
Wooten believes the chickens may have fallen off a truck before the incident, which occurred in a public area where families and children were present. "Families and kids saw this in real-time," she added.
In response to the outcry, Wooten met with Chatsworth Police Chief Josh Ethridge to discuss measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
"When I spoke to him, he was remorseful. He plans to retrain not just that officer, but all of his officers on proper protocols," Wooten reported.
We reached out to Chief Ethridge for comment, but he has not yet responded,
Wooten emphasized that while many people view chickens as a food source, they should never be killed in such a harsh manner.
"It's not okay for those who had to witness it, and it's not okay for people like us who dedicate our lives to saving animals," she said.
The incident has ignited discussions on animal welfare in the community, with residents calling for accountability and education on the humane treatment of animals.
At this time, the officer has not been identified, nor have any charges been brought up.

holding back tears and feeling miserable after missing all seven of his shots in the fourth quarter on Saturday in a 66-53 loss to Carmichael Jesuit in the state Division II championship game
stood in the middle of the court embracing every Chatsworth teammate as their names were read
The emotion and disappointment were visible at Golden 1 Center
and yet he stood his ground in his final high school game that saw him finish with 3,002 career points but back-to-back defeats in state finals
This is an example of leadership. Alijah Arenas embracing every teammate while feeling miserable after loss to Jesuit in state finals. All-time City scoring leader. Remember the moment. pic.twitter.com/goS3rziNRW

supported by a loud contingent of students from its nearby campus

“I feel more of the story was effort on both ends,” Arenas said. “They had more heart.”
Freshman Maison Phillips made three threes and finished with 19 points to lead Jesuit to its first state title. Jesuit had lost twice to Crenshaw in the 1990s in state finals.
Headed to USC, Arenas decided to attend Chatsworth despite numerous other opportunities from more publicized schools known for basketball excellence. Through his own perseverance and leadership, he helped the Chancellors make history.
“We took neighborhood kids from Chatsworth to back-to-back state championship games,” Harris said.
The tears Arenas had were because it was tough to say goodbye to his teammates. They had become some of his best friends. He tried his best to deliver a championship, but sometimes it doesn’t work out. That’s why embracing each one for a final time was telling them he would be friends for life. One of those was center Taj Unuakhalu, who had 10 rebounds, nine points and was one of the most improved players.
It was Arenas’ final game putting on a Chatsworth uniform. He leaves quite a legacy, from being the all-time City Section scoring leader to being chosen a McDonald’s All-American.
The next time you’ll see Arenas’ No. 0 jersey will be when it’s framed on the wall of Chatsworth’s gym, because that’s going to happen one day for his many contributions over three seasons of basketball excellence.

“We have to recruit L.A.,” Musselman said after a game in December. “And not just recruit them a little bit. We have to recruit them relentlessly.”
That unrelenting approach on the recruiting trail had yet to fully resonate until Thursday, when five-star Chatsworth guard Alijah Arenas, one of the top uncommitted prospects in this year’s class, committed to the Trojans.
Arenas’ commitment marks the biggest recruiting victory of the Musselman era, the first five-star prospect to endorse the coach’s vision in L.A.
was listed as a junior before it was announced he’d be part of the Class of 2025
the son of former NBA player Gilbert Arenas
10 recruit in this year’s class and the second-ranked prospect in the state
“It felt like the best fit,” Arenas said while announcing his commitment on his father’s podcast
Gilbert Arenas attended Grant High and Arizona, so USC’s success in recruiting Alijah might come as a surprise considering his father’s Arizona ties.
USC struggles mightily at the free-throw line in its 82-76 men’s basketball loss to UCLA, leaving players and coach Eric Musselman searching for answers.
Arenas gives USC a trio of prospects in this year’s class, alongside top-50 guard Jerry Easter of Missouri and four-star St. John Bosco guard Elzie Harrington. They’ll join a roster next season that will look decidedly different. More than half the team will have exhausted its eligibility, making it even more critical that Musselman establish a foothold in Southern California.
With Arenas’ commitment, he’s on the right track.

The 2024 Chatsworth Cranberry Festival was held on October 19th and 20th in the tiny Pinelands town of Chatsworth
My wife and I make it part of our October festival tour every year
Part street fair, part food fest, part flea market, this is a must visit for any New Jersian or lover of Autumn. Of course if you are a fan of cranberries, well that helps too! As I wrote about before last year's festival, they have EVERYTHING cranberry! From wine, to hot sauce (my favorite), to cakes. pies, and breads. They even have cranberry chili!
I snapped some photos of this year's Chatsworth Cranberry Festival, along with some of the items I enjoyed.

The ensuing free kick from the 20-yard line was made off the ground, not on a tee, and the ball caromed laterally out of bounds without touching a player, resulting in a five-yard penalty. No time went off the clock and the Chancellors were awarded the ball at the 15, setting up the winning field goal.
“I didn’t think I’d get a chance to kick it there, but I was ready for the moment,” said Velazquez, who had made one field goal all season, in a league game against Granada Hills. “I’m always composed. Confidence is key. I knew it was good right away … it came off my foot perfectly.”
Velazquez was given the game ball and did not let go of it through the trophy presentation.
Sophomore Eric Myers carried 20 times for 143 yards, including a 17-yard run to cap the Rams’ first touchdown drive and a two-yard run to end an eight-play, 76-yard march that gave South Gate a 36-33 lead with 5:51 remaining.
Leon rushed for 141 yards and a touchdown for the third-seeded Chancellors (9-5), who lost to Fairfax in overtime last year in the Division II final at Valley College.
It was Chatsworth’s third section title and its first since claiming the Division II title in 1998.
South Gate (7-7) was seeking its first City title since 1988 when it won the 3A crown.

DALTON, Ga. — A 53-year-old Chatsworth man faces several charges after police say a woman who was doing community service claimed he touched her inappropriately.
Philip Kevin McKinley turned himself in at the Whitfield County Jail to be booked on March 4th, according to the Dalton Police Department.
A release says back in February, a woman who was performing community service at the Dalton Convention Center as part of her probation told police McKinley "touched intimate parts of her body without her consent while she was at work."
At the time, McKinley was working as the maintenance and janitorial services supervisor.
The woman also told police McKinley "proposed paying off probationers' fines and reporting increased amounts of community service hours in exchange for sexual favors."
McKinley is now charged with 2 counts of sexual batgtery and one count of sexual assault by a person with supervisory or disciplinary authority.
Dalton Police say they're looking for anyone else who might have had a similar encounter with McKinley.
