"A Conversation with Liz Cheney" at Anchorage's Atwood Concert Hall
speaking at an Anchorage event on Thursday
had harsh words for much of her Republican Party but praise for a rare GOP member who
is willing to criticize President Donald Trump: Alaska’s senior U.S
“I can’t be here in Alaska and not mention the incredible courage of Sen
Lisa Murkowski,” Cheney said near the start of her event
held at a packed theater in the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts
There are very few Republicans who will be consistently counted on to do the right thing
And she’s one of a very small group,” Cheney said
House member from Wyoming — and daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney — spoke at a lecture hosted by the University of Alaska Anchorage and Alaska World Affairs Council
She took questions from veteran journalist Elizabeth Arnold
Cheney voted to impeach Trump for his attempts to overturn the 2020 election and opposed him in other ways
who was reelected in 2022 over a Trump-backed challenger
Cheney lost her seat in the GOP primary to a Trump loyalist
who now represents Wyoming’s single House district
That was after Cheney co-chaired the congressional committee that investigated the Jan
and after she had been stripped of her GOP leadership role by fellow House Republicans because of her opposition to Trump’s actions
including those who attacked police officers — and that Republicans in office have gone along with those pardons
saying that they are the party that supports law enforcement
please go back and look at the videos of Jan
Remind those Republicans that Trump watched the events unfold on television for three hours without trying to stop the riot
“He watched police officers get brutally beaten by people who were carrying his flag; they were doing it in his name … And then
he pardoned all of those people,” she said
The Republican Party as a whole — with a few exceptions like Murkowski — has betrayed its convictions and even the U.S
Constitution to become “a personality cult” loyal only to Trump
Today’s GOP is “something we haven’t seen in this country before,” she said
“The party has walked away from the Constitution,” said the former House member
who noted that she grew up as a Republican and cast her first vote for President Ronald Reagan
Cheney spent much of her speech calling out House Speaker Mike Johnson and other Republican leaders of Congress who she said have enabled Trump’s attacks on the rule of law and other bad actions
“The problem with Mike is that he’s fundamentally dishonest,” she said
And they have enabled rank incompetence and corruption in the Trump administration
the most serious of which is Trump’s attack on the rule of law
Voters should take action to counter the cult-like devotion that has given Trump and his administration ”carte blanche,” Cheney said
“That’s why it’s crucially important that in 2026
the Republicans lose the majority in the House and the Senate,” she said
She also called on the audience and public at large to continue protesting Trump administration actions
contacting members of Congress and state legislators and even consider running for office to replace bad officials
It was a message embraced by the event audience
Many of those attending Cheney’s address had walked over to the theater after attending a May Day anti-Trump protest held a few blocks away on downtown Anchorage’s Park Strip
the audience erupted in applause and cheers
Cheney herself has continued to be politically active since losing her House seat
She started a political action committee and has been supporting candidates she believes will counter the Trump movement — most notably
who wound up losing the 2024 presidential election
titled “Oath and Honor,” that details the confrontations she had with fellow congressional Republicans over the efforts to overthrow the 2020 election results
She has also been teaching at the University of Virginia and traveling the country to speak at events like that held Thursday in Anchorage

as political tensions reach a boiling point and democratic norms continue to erode under what many now call an “authoritarian administration,” an unlikely voice is calling for a new kind of resistance
renowned for her conservative views and fierce independence
has issued a blistering open letter to the Democratic Party
Her message is clear: stop fundraising and start fighting
once a Republican insider and now one of the most vocal critics of the MAGA movement
delivers a searing critique not just of the GOP
but of Democratic leadership’s failure to meet the moment
In a statement that reads like both a battle plan and a warning
Cheney lays out seven concrete steps she believes must be taken immediately to preserve American democracy; from empowering whistleblowers and leveraging international watchdogs
to creating state-level resistance networks and joining the International Criminal Court
From Liz Cheney:Dear Democratic Party,I need more from you.You keep sending emails begging for $15
while we’re watching fascism consolidate power in real time. This administration is not simply “a different ideology.” It is a coordinated
authoritarian machine — with the Supreme Court
and the executive pen all under its control. And you
You’re still asking for decorum and donations
That won’t save us.I don’t want to hear another polite floor speech
I want action so bold it shifts the damn news cycle — not fits inside one.Every time I see something from the DNC
Those of us who donate don’t want to keep sending money just to watch you stand frozen as the Constitution goes up in flames — shaking your heads and saying
He has the majority.” I call bullshit. If you don’t know how to think outside the box…If you don’t know how to strategize…If you don’t know how to fight fire with fire…what the hell are we giving you money for? Some of us have two or three advanced degrees. Some of us have military training. Some of us know what coordinated resistance looks like — and this ain’t it.Yes
Now we need action. You have to stop acting like this is a normal presidency that will just time out in four years
So here’s what I need from you — right now:
civilian-powered investigative coalition.I’m talking experts
Make it unshakable.Let the people drag the rot into the light. If you can’t hold formal hearings
let the country act. This isn’t about optics — it’s about receipts.Because at some point
these people will be held accountable. And when that day comes
every act of silence—documented. You’re not just preserving truth — you’re preparing evidence for prosecution. The more they vanish people and weaponize data
Call their bluff. You cannot control what the other side does. But you can control your own integrity. So prove it
Prove that your party is still grounded in law
and ethical leadership.Join.If you’ve got nothing to hide — join.Show the world who’s hiding bodies
and buried bank accounts.Force the GOP to explain why they’d rather protect a war criminal than sign a treaty. And while you’re at it
borders.Make this administration explain — on camera — why they’re terrified of international oversight.3
Fund state-level resistance infrastructure.Don’t just send postcards
Send resources.Channel DNC funds into rapid-response teams
and digital security training. If the federal government is hijacked
build power underneath it.If the laws become tools of oppression
and boldly. This is not campaign season — this is an authoritarian purge.Stop campaigning.Act like this is the end of democracy
because it is.We WILL REMEMBER the warriors come primaries.Fighting this regime should be your marketing strategy. And let’s be clear:The reason the other side always seems three steps ahead is because they ARE.They prepared for this. They infiltrated school boards
and police unions. They built a machine while you wrote press releases. We’re reacting — they’ve been executing a plan for years. It’s time to shift from panic to blueprint. You should already be working with strategists and military minds on PROJECT 2029 —a coordinated
long-term plan to rebuild this country when the smoke clears. You should be publicly laying out:• The laws and amendments you’ll pass to ensure this never happens again• The systems you’ll tear down and the safeguards you’ll enshrine• The plan to hold perpetrators of human atrocities accountable• The urgent commitment to immediately bring home those sold into slavery in El SalvadorYou say you’re the party of the people? Then show the people the plan.4
Use your platform to educate the public on rights and resistance tactics. If they’re going to strip us of rights and lie about it — arm the people with truth.Text campaigns
not soundbites.We don’t need more slogans.We need survival manuals.5
Leverage international media and watchdogs.Stop hoping U.S
cable news will wake up.They’re too busy playing both sides of fascism.Feed the real stories to BBC
leak them to anonymous dropboxes if you have to.Make what’s happening in America a global scandal. And stop relying on platforms that are actively suppressing truth.Start leveraging Substack
Use Bluesky. That’s where the resistance is migrating
That’s where censorship hasn’t caught up.If the mainstream won’t carry the truth — outflank them.Get creative
Go global. If our democracy is being dismantled in broad daylight
make sure the whole world sees it — and make sure we’re still able to say it.6
Create a digital safe haven for whistleblowers and defectors. Not everyone inside this regime is loyal. Some are scared
Some want out.Build the channels.Encrypted
Protected.Make it easy for the cracks in the system to become gaping holes. And while you’re at it?Stop ostracizing MAGA defectors.Everyone makes mistakes — even glaring
critical ones.We are not the bullies. We are not the ones filled with hate. And it is not your job to shame people who finally saw the fire and chose to step out of it.They will have to deal with that internal struggle — the guilt of putting a very dangerous and callous regime in power. But they’re already outnumbered
Don’t push them back into the crowd. We don’t need purity. We need numbers. We need people willing to burn their red hats and testify against the machine they helped build.7
Study the collapse—and the comeback. You should be learning from South Korea and how they managed their brief rule under dictatorship. They didn’t waste time chasing the one man with absolute immunity. They went after the structure. The aides
it ROARS with pressure that will cause change. We need to be deafening. You still have a chance to do something historic. To be remembered for courage
not caution. To go down as the party that didn’t just watch the fall — but fought the hell back with everything they had.But the clock is ticking. And the deportation buses are idling

On Location at Tianguis Turistico: Interview With Miguel Aguíñiga
Committee on House Administration's Subcommittee on Oversight Chairman Barry Loudermilk (GA-11) released the following statement."Liz Cheney and Bennie Thompson are trying to say that my investigation has disregarded the truth of January 6
pointing to their Select Committee’s 'tremendous weight of evidence'," said Chairman Loudermilk. "We evaluated that exact weight based on their records and found it slimmer than claimed."Cheney claims the Select Committee's report was based on the testimony of hundreds of witnesses
However, Cheney and Thompson did not make ALL transcripts public
They hid transcripts of first-hand witnesses who directly refuted their 'star witness' Cassidy Hutchinson's sensational story
which Cheney had personally procured."Americans can see the facts for themselves
That is why I have always released first-hand accounts and evidence
where I am releasing the transcripts from the interview of USSS employees who directly refute Hutchinson's story. Cheney and Thompson's Select Committee conducted these interviews and had this information but chose not to release it publicly."Former Chairman Thompson might not be aware of these transcripts
which refute the narrative put forward by his committee
I encourage him to read these transcripts taken by his select committee."I also invite Chairman Thompson to explain why the Vice Chair of his committee
was having secret conversations with the committee’s “star witness”

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Kamala Harris teamed up with Liz Cheney on Monday to make a bipartisan appeal to Republican voters uneasy about Donald Trump
describing the former president as a malignant force that needs to be removed from American politics
The Democratic vice president said at an event in the Philadelphia suburbs that Trump “has been using the power of the presidency to demean and to divide us” and “people are exhausted with that.”
“People around the world are watching,” Harris said
“And sometimes I do fret a bit about whether we as Americans truly understand how important we are to the world.”
said her background as a conservative means she prioritizes the Constitution over her political party
and she was concerned about allowing a “totally erratic
completely unstable” Trump to run foreign policy
WATCH: Brooks and Capehart on if Liz Cheney’s support will help Harris with independent voters
“Our adversaries know that they can play Donald Trump,” she said
“And we cannot afford to take that risk.”
Trump has frequently tried to paint Harris
but she struck a moderate tone during her appearance with Cheney
Harris promised to “invite good ideas from wherever they come” and “cut red tape,” and she said “there should be a healthy two party system” in the country
“We need to be able to have these good intense debates about issues that are grounded in fact,” Harris said
“Let’s start there!” Harris said as the audience clapped
“Can you believe that’s an applause line?”
Harris had two more events with Cheney on Monday
the former South Carolina governor and U.S
ambassador to the United Nations who ran against Trump for the Republican nomination
Their next stop is Oakland County in suburban Detroit and their third is Waukesha County outside of Milwaukee
With just over two weeks to go before the presidential election and the race a dead heat
the Democratic nominee is looking for support from every possible voter
Her campaign is hoping to persuade those who haven’t made up their minds
mobilize any Democrats considering sitting this one out
and pick off voters in areas where support for Trump may be fading
A few votes here and there could add up to an overall win
Haley won more than 9,000 primary votes even after she dropped out of the race
Wisconsin was decided for President Joe Biden in 2020 by just 20,000 votes
In-person early voting in the state starts Tuesday
Cheney says she endorsed Harris because of her concerns about Trump
She lost her House seat after she co-chaired a congressional committee that investigated the Jan
That’s when a violent mob of Trump supporters broke into the building and bloodied law enforcement in a failed effort to stop the certification of Biden’s 2020 presidential win
Trump lashed out at Cheney on social media on Monday
calling her “dumb as a rock” and accusing her of being a “war hawk.”
Cheney is not the only member of her party to back Harris
More than 100 former Republican officeholders and officials joined Harris last week in Washington Crossing
George Washington led hundreds of troops across the Delaware River to a major victory in the Revolutionary War
Cheney told Republican voters that the patriotic choice was to vote for Democrats
the vice president has increasingly focused on Trump’s lies around the 2020 election and his role in the violent mob’s failed efforts
She says Trump is “unstable” and “unhinged” and would eviscerate democratic norms if given a second White House term
“I do believe that Donald Trump is an unserious man,” she says at her rallies
“and the consequences of him ever getting back into the White House are brutally serious.”
Trump has been trying to minimize the violent Jan
claiming it was “a day of love from the standpoint of the millions.”

Former GOP Representative Liz Cheney issued a new rebuke of Donald Trump on Wednesday after the president signed an executive order launching an investigation into Chris Krebs
Newsweek reached out to the White House for comment on Thursday
Trump's order marked an intensification of his efforts to use presidential power to punish critics and perceived enemies. He vowed repeatedly during his presidential campaign to target his critics and political rivals and has taken several actions in recent months to do so
Cheney, who represented Wyoming, became one of Trump's most prominent critics following the 2020 election and the January 6, 2021, pro-Trump riot at the U.S. Capitol. She voted to impeach Trump along with nine other Republicans afterward
Cheney re-posted a clip of the president's remarks about his new action
"In a special mix of incompetence and evil, Trump has combined his disastrous implementation of 1930s tariff policies with Stalinesque targeting of political adversaries. The 2020 election wasn't stolen and speaking the truth is only a crime in countries ruled by tyrants," she wrote on X, formerly Twitter

Trump described Krebs sarcastically as a "wise guy," claiming that the 2020 election was a "disaster."
Krebs served as the director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) in Trump's first administration and worked to counter the president's false claims that he won the 2020 election
saying "the November 3rd election was the most secure in American history."
Trump fired Krebs a few days later and continued to insist that the election had been "stolen" in favor of Joe Biden
Numerous independent audits and reviews in critical swing states have consistently countered Trump's characterization. Dozens of legal challenges brought by Trump and his allies also failed in court, including when reviewed by judges appointed by the Republican president
On January 6, 2021, hundreds of Trump's supporters rioted at the U.S. Capitol, believing that the election was stolen. While the riot temporarily delayed the 2020 election's formal certification, Biden was inevitably confirmed as the winner in a joint session of Congress
Trump was impeached on January 13, 2021, by the House, with Cheney backing the effort. The Senate ultimately acquitted Trump
falling short of the two-thirds majority required for a conviction
Cheney went on to be one of two Republicans who served on the House select committee that carried out an investigation of the events of January 6
as well as Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election
Cheney endorsed and campaigned for former Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election
"Our nation's democratic system functioned last night and we have a new President-elect
as citizens of the greatest nation on earth
to do everything we can to support and defend our Constitution
and ensure that our institutions hold over these coming four years."
Republican political strategist Sarah Longwell to MSNBC on Wednesday on Trump's executive order: "This is some of the most insane authoritarian stuff we've seen out of him."
Chris Krebs wrote in a December 2020 op-ed in The Washington Post: "The 2020 election was the most secure in U.S
This success should be celebrated by all Americans
not undermined in the service of a profoundly un-American goal."
on MSNBC on Wednesday: "Trump wants to continue to argue that he really won in 2020..
He's going after Chris Krebs for doing his job the right way."
Trump's executive order on Wednesday followed a string of orders by the president targeting law firms and individuals involved in investigations or legal actions against him
including revoking security clearances and suspending federal contracts
setting the stage for a broader legal and constitutional clash

Vice President Kamala Harris and former U.S
Liz Cheney returned to Wisconsin Monday night
making an overt appeal to Republicans and undecided voters in the heart of the suburbs
The event was part of a series of “moderated panels” between the two over the course of one day in three swing states
with stops earlier in Michigan and Pennsylvania
The Wisconsin event was in Brookfield, a Republican-leaning city in Waukesha County, the largest of the so-called WOW counties in southeast Wisconsin that have historically been critical to GOP success in the state
The moderator was none other than Charlie Sykes
the former conservative talk show host and Republican kingmaker turned “Never Trump” commentator
who introduced Harris as “the next president of the United States.”
a Republican who is the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney
lost her GOP primary two years ago after criticizing former President Donald Trump and his influence on the GOP
she has endorsed Harris as a “reasonable” candidate that non-Democrats should support
and denounced how Trump responded to the riots at the U.S
“What undergirds everything that we are as a nation is the rule of law,” Cheney said before a crowd of a few hundred at the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts in Brookfield
“When you look at what Donald Trump did after the last election
when you look at the cruelty that’s involved in someone who watches the attack on the Capitol … that’s depravity,” she said
It was the second time Cheney and Harris had campaigned together in Wisconsin in just the past month. They first appeared together in Ripon
using the birthplace of the Republican Party to frame Trump’s candidacy as a threat to democracy that transcends party
on a stage flanked by signs reading “Country Over Party.”
that the vast majority of us have more in common,” said Harris
Harris argued that Trump poses a danger to American security interests, pointing to a letter signed by about 700 national security leaders
that described this election as “a choice between serious leadership and vengeful impulsiveness.”
but the consequences of him ever being president of the United States again are brutally serious.”
a teacher from Waukesha who described himself as a lifelong Republican
told Harris and Cheney that politics feels toxic
Cheney said that voters should strive to be worthy of the sacrifice that military members have made
and to support candidates who take seriously the role of commander in chief
“The decision to give somebody the power of the presidency means that you’re handing someone the most awesome and significant power of any office anywhere in the world,” she said
“You have to choose people who have character … and Donald Trump has proven he’s not one of those people by his actions.”
“I would differ from her when it comes to policy
really admire … her principles,” she said
“I admire all she’s given up in order to take a principled stand.”
Behling and her partner volunteer with Braver Angels
an organization that aims to decrease partisanship and increase civil conversations
spent the last several years living in an RV and traveling the U.S
“That reignited my love for the country and appreciation for its incredible diversity of people and topography,” she said
“I was also just horrified at the extent of our divide
Mary Miske and Pamela Taylor drove up from the northern suburbs of Chicago for what they described as a chance to see Harris in an intimate venue
I really appreciate her positive and bipartisan approach,” said Miske
Taylor said she was excited to see a candidate from her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha — part of the “Divine Nine” historically Black fraternal organizations — at the top of the ticket
“There’s nothing that I would not do to help ensure the fact that she becomes our 47th president,” Taylor said
“For Liz Cheney to come across the aisle and to offer her hand and to help guide the way forward is really the opportunity for all of us to follow the same precepts,” she said
the Republican Party of Wisconsin said that Cheney’s support for Harris amounted to a flip-flop
Liz Cheney warned voters of Kamala Harris’ extreme agenda,” said Wisconsin GOP chairman Brian Schimming
But the facts about Kamala Harris remain the same: she is too extreme for Wisconsin.”

In an election that’s expected to be decided by thin margins
Democrats are trying to persuade enough people to cross the aisle to nudge Harris over the finish line
It’s a strategy that goes against longtime political doctrine that suggests candidates must tend to their ideological base above all else
sometimes to the detriment of reaching out to swing voters
said Harris would “lead this country with a sincere heart.”
“We might not agree on every issue,” she said at the third event of the day in Brookfield
It’s not the only issue where Cheney has broken with her party
Even though she considers herself to be “pro-life,” she said abortion restrictions have gone too far since the U.S
deeply troubled by what I have watched happen in so many states,” Cheney said
her comments over the course of the day amounted to an extraordinary attempt to roll out the welcome mat for Republican voters to back Harris
a politician that Cheney herself once described as a “radical liberal.”
“This is not a normal election,” said Charles Sykes
a conservative commentator who moderated the Wisconsin event
talked about Trump as a cruel figure who has exhausted Americans with his divisiveness
“He tends to encourage us as Americans to point our fingers at each other,” she said
The vast majority of us have so much more in common than what separates us.”
Harris and Cheney spoke wistfully of a time when Democrats and Republicans could argue about their differences without the country’s constitutional foundation at stake
“The strength of our democracy requires a strong two-party system,” Harris said
All three of the counties visited by Harris and Cheney on Monday — Chester County in Pennsylvania
Oakland County in Michigan and Waukesha County in Wisconsin — were won by Nikki Haley
Trump lashed out at Cheney on social media
Cheney reminded people that “you can vote your conscience and not ever have to say a word to anybody.”
“There will be millions of Republicans who do that on Nov
5,” she predicted during the second event of the day in Royal Oak
Harris referenced a report in Bob Woodward’s latest book that Gen
the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
She also said voters should take Trump’s rhetoric seriously rather than write it off as a “sick sense of humor.”
“Some people find it humorous what he says and it’s just silly,” she said
The more intimate settings Monday were a shift for Harris
whose campaign has mostly focused on rallies with thousands of people
The audiences listened intently to her and Cheney
During Harris’ story about a young boy who was afraid of a school classroom where there wasn’t a closet to hide from a shooter
but she struck a moderate tone during her appearances with Cheney
Harris promised to “invite good ideas from wherever they come” and “cut red tape.” She also said “there should be a healthy two-party system” in the country

WASHINGTON - Committee on House Administration's Subcommittee on Oversight Chairman Barry Loudermilk (GA-11) obtained never-before-seen correspondence between January 6 Select Committee Vice-Chair Liz Cheney and Cassidy Hutchinson and in 2022
while Hutchinson was still a subject of the Select Committee’s investigation
In the months prior to Hutchinson’s explosive private and public testimony
both directly and through an intermediary—Alyssa Farah Griffin—while Hutchinson was represented by her attorney
The Select Committee conducted six transcribed interviews of Hutchinson in total
Passantino represented Hutchinson for the first three interviews.
Cheney began communicating with Hutchinson in April 2022
Hutchinson reached out to Farah Griffin following Hutchinson’s second transcribed interview
Farah Griffin and Hutchinson knew each other from their time working together in the White House
Farah Griffin was one of the first former Trump administration officials to publicly criticize Trump in January 2021
and was publicly working with the Select Committee on its investigation
When Hutchinson reached out to Farah Griffin
she invited Hutchinson over to her Georgetown townhome to talk on April 26
Hutchinson told Farah Griffin she had more information she could provide to the Select Committee
according to statements by both Hutchinson and Farah Griffin
Farah Griffin agreed to “[contact] Liz Cheney on [Hutchinson’s] behalf about scheduling another interview.” Hutchinson’s new testimony would include her never-before-heard story that alleged that President Trump agreed with rioters chanting “Hang Mike Pence.” According to text messages
that appear to be from the encrypted messaging app “Signal,” between Hutchinson and Farah Griffin obtained by the Subcommittee
Cheney agreed to communicate with Hutchinson through Farah Griffin. However
it appears that Cheney knew communicating with Hutchinson while Hutchinson was represented by an attorney and a subject of the Select Committee’s investigation
without going through Hutchinson’s attorney
would be unethical. This is evident by Farah Griffin’s text to Hutchinson that Cheney’s “one concern was so long as [sic] you have counsel
she can’t really ethically talk to you without him.”?
Farah Griffin acted?as an intermediary between?Cheney and the Select Committee
Farah Griffin helped coordinate Hutchinson’s third transcribed interview—without Hutchinson’s lawyer
Farah Griffin and Hutchinson discussed the optics of Hutchinson leaking her “new information” to the press instead of providing it directly to the Select Committee
Hutchinson and Farah Griffin also colluded to create a false story about why Hutchinson needed to do a third transcribed interview for the Select Committee to feed to Passantino
Presumably this was done at Cheney’s direction because it was Cheney herself who led the third transcribed interview with Hutchinson
Cheney knew that Passantino represented Hutchinson leading up to and during this third transcribed interview with the Select Committee on May 17
transcribed interview Hutchinson testified to a series of uncorroborated and unverified stories that conveniently fit the Select Committee’s narrative that President Trump is dangerous and solely responsible for the events of January 6. Despite already testifying to the Select Committee twice
Hutchinson never previously mentioned this “new information.”
After her third transcribed interview Hutchinson reached out to Cheney directly
While Hutchinson revealed the general timing of these conversations in her book
the extent and content of their communication was never previously disclosed. When Hutchinson texted Cheney
she was still represented by Passantino which
Cheney and Hutchinson communicated directly for days without Passantino’s knowledge
Cheney provided Hutchison with new attorneys from Alston and Bird—pro bono.
Days after Cheney began communicating directly with Hutchinson
Hutchinson fired Passantino and hired Cheney’s recommended attorneys
who agreed to represent Hutchinson pro bono
Cheney brought Hutchinson in for a secretive fourth transcribed interview
only Cheney and one other Committee counsel were present
in addition to Hutchinson’s new counsel
During this fourth transcribed interview Hutchinson testified to some of her most outlandish new claims. The Subcommittee was only able to obtain a limited number of text messages from Hutchinson and Farah Griffin
but Cheney’s influence on Hutchinson is apparent from that point forward by her dramatic change in testimony and eventual claims against President Trump using second- and third-hand accounts
Hutchinson claimed that Anthony Ornato told Hutchinson that Trump lunged toward the driver of his car after he was denied his request to go to the Capitol
This story has never been corroborated and was directly refuted by both USSS agents in the vehicle with Trump that day. In her book
Cheney wrote that it would compromise the Select Committee’s investigation to be seen advising witnesses and suggesting new legal representation. However
Cheney failed to acknowledge in her own book that she herself provided Hutchinson with new attorneys who would represent Hutchinson pro bono (see below)
Hutchinson told a conflicting account of Cheney’s role in her legal representation
she wrote that Cheney herself advised Hutchinson to change attorneys and even provided a list of recommendations
It is apparent that Cheney knowingly communicated with Hutchinson—without Hutchinson’s attorney’s knowledge—and by doing so finally revealed the flawed process and alleged findings of the Select Committee.?Cheney had an ethical responsibility to only communicate with Hutchinson with her attorney present
Hutchinson’s sensational testimony was essential to the Select Committee’s inquisition of President Trump
Cheney apparently defied her ethical responsibilities and communicated directly with Hutchinson behind Passantino’s back
and even assisted Hutchinson in obtaining new representation
Cheney and Hutchinson Attempted to Disbar Passantino
After Hutchinson switched attorneys at Cheney’s direction
the Select Committee needed to ensure Hutchinson’s credibility as a witness and explain away her changed testimony
the Select Committee needed to create a new narrative that would make Passantino the scapegoat
They manufactured the story that Passantino gave Hutchinson faulty advice — such as instructing Hutchinson to withhold information
and even that Passantino implied he would help Hutchinson with employment in return for favorable testimony
Contrary to the Select Committee’s and Hutchinson’s narrative
the Subcommittee obtained messages between Farah Griffin and Hutchinson where Hutchinson admits that Passantino was acting in her best interest and that she agreed with his counsel. The Subcommittee has reviewed relevant documents revealing that both bar complaints filed against Passantino in Washington D.C
and Georgia were “dismissed” without imposing any penalties against Passantio. Instead of Cheney facing scrutiny for unethically communicating with Hutchinson behind the back of her legal representation
Cheney used the weight of the Select Committee to pressure the D.C
Bar to investigate her star witness’s scapegoat
This was all to make Hutchinson seem credible while destroying the credibility of any dissenting voice
and that meant attacking the career of anyone who stood in the way of the Select Committee’s narrative.
The Select Committee was in possession of these accounts but chose to hide them
and instead promoted Hutchinson’s scandalous narrative

the Subcommittee urges the FBI to investigate Cheney for the crime of witness tampering (p
it is not the legal ethics violation that the House report focuses upon
That accusation is based on a selective quotation of the anti-contact rule
leaving out the very words that prove that it does not apply
The effect is to create a public show that may well serve political purposes
but should be a complete nonstarter under any bona fide legal review
in which Hutchinson was represented by Passantino
Cheney secretly contacted Hutchinson through an intermediary
The House report quotes excerpts from both Hutchinson’s and Cheney’s memoirs about what transpired
Hutchinson told her she was inclined to represent herself going forward
but Cheney cautioned her to get independent legal advice
Hutchinson’s version is that she asked Cheney if she could recommend a lawyer
Hutchinson fired Passantino and retained counsel recommended by Cheney
Hutchinson’s subsequent testimony was very damaging to Trump
One might quibble with these facts about the communications between Cheney and Hutchinson or add more to them
but I assume they are generally correct for the purpose of this analysis
The House report explains what the supposed ethics problem is for Cheney: a violation of the bar’s rule on communicating with a person represented by counsel (D.C. Rule 4.2(a)):
It is unusual – and potentially unethical – for a Member of Congress conducting an investigation to contact a witness if the Member knows that the individual is represented by legal counsel
and an attorney who circumvents an individual’s legal representation would violate well-established attorney ethics standards and the Washington D.C
Bar would apply this rule to an attorney who also sits as a Member of Congress
its rules state that “a lawyer shall not communicate or cause another to communicate about the subject of the representation with a person known to be represented by another lawyer in the matter ….” This appears to be precisely what Representative Cheney did at this time
and a 2011 case that “bears a striking resemblance to Representative Cheney’s communications with the represented party Hutchinson.”
because the rule applies only to lawyers who are representing clients – which Cheney was not
Both the House report and the America First Legal complaint conspicuously lop off the first seven words of the sentence they quote from Rule 4.2(a)
which make it clear why the rule doesn’t apply:
During the course of representing a client
a lawyer shall not communicate or cause another to communicate about the subject of the representation with a person known to be represented by another lawyer in the matter
unless the lawyer has the prior consent of the lawyer representing such other person …
The House report and the bar complaint similarly fail to mention Comment [7] to the D.C. Rule:
[7] This rule also does not preclude communication with a represented person who is seeking advice from a lawyer who is not otherwise representing a client in the matter (emphasis added)
Cheney was not “otherwise representing a client in the matter.” Whatever else you may think of her communications with Hutchinson
Only lawyers representing another person in the matter are bound by the anti-contact rule; lawyers “not otherwise representing a client in the matter” are not
This distinction is not a mere technicality – it’s a vital protection of the client’s right to seek a second opinion
Suppose you are unhappy with the way your lawyer is representing you
you suspect they aren’t acting in your best interests
Maybe they haven’t moved on your case for six months
Or maybe you think they have a conflict of interest
You want to do a reality check with a second lawyer – a friend
perhaps – to confirm or allay your suspicions about your lawyer
you don’t want to ask your current lawyer’s consent to that reality check
It’s not simply that they might not consent
It’s also that you don’t want to tip your lawyer off that you don’t entirely trust them
Construing the anti-contact rule the way that the House report and the America First Legal complaint do would strip away the client’s right to get a second opinion about her lawyer without that lawyer’s permission
No wonder one has to perform cosmetic surgery on the rule to reach their conclusion
Passantino (according to her testimony) reassured her that “[t]he committee doesn’t know what you can and can’t recall.” These would be good reasons to want independent advice without having to ask Passantino’s consent – and Comment [7] to the anti-contact rule makes it clear that the rule does not take away her right to speak to another lawyer
As for the disciplinary case that the Report says “bears a striking resemblance to Representative Cheney’s communications with the represented party Hutchinson,” it is this:
Bar Counsel issued Hovis an informal admonition
Hovis inappropriately communicated about the subject of the representation with a party she knew to be represented by another lawyer in the matter
It seems that the only pertinent legal ethics rule might be the prohibition on frivolous complaints (D.C
Rule 3.1) – and it could well apply to America First Legal’s complaint
A lawyer shall not bring … a proceeding … unless there is a basis in law and fact for doing so that is not frivolous
which includes a good-faith argument for an extension
Perhaps America First Legal has a good-faith argument for extending the anti-contact rule to limit clients’ right to obtain advice without clearing it with the very lawyer the client mistrusts
their complaint doesn’t offer it – perhaps because then they would have to admit that they didn’t quote the existing rule correctly
Upping the Stakes: The Accusation of Witness Tampering
As I mentioned, the report recommends that Cheney be investigated by the FBI for witness tampering, in violation of 18 USC §1512
The relevant clauses of §1512 make it a crime to knowingly and corruptly persuade or attempt to persuade someone
with intent to influence their testimony in an official proceeding (§1512(b)(1))
The question is what makes Cheney’s contacts with Hutchinson “corrupt.” Here is what the Report says (p
Evidence uncovered by the Subcommittee revealed that former Congresswoman Liz Cheney tampered with at least one witness
by secretly communicating with Hutchinson without Hutchinson’s attorney’s knowledge
but it appears that the ethics violation – the violation of the anti-contact rule – is what makes Cheney’s contact with Hutchinson “corrupt.”
The report also accuses Hutchinson of perjury
The accusation against Cheney would have merit only if Hutchinson did perjure herself
These are matters of fact (or fiction) that I cannot comment on
that might provide an independent reason to suppose that Cheney contacted Hutchinson “corruptly.” But if they are false
then there is no basis for any criminal accusation against Cheney
The House Subcommittee would be doing exactly what they accused the January 6th select committee of doing: weaponizing the justice system for low political gain

a "radical war hawk" and described putting her in front of a firing squad
During an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson in Arizona
former President Donald Trump on Thursday suggested that former Rep
Liz Cheney — one of his highest-profile Republican critics — should be shot for being a “radical war hawk.”
“But the reason she couldn’t stand me is that she always wanted to go to war with people
we would be in 50 different countries.”
Let’s see how she feels about it when the guns are trained on her face,” he said.
Cheney likened Trump’s comments to a death threat.
“This is how dictators destroy free nations. They threaten those who speak against them with death. We cannot entrust our country and our freedom to a petty, vindictive, cruel, unstable man who wants to be a tyrant. #Womenwillnotbesilenced #VoteKamala,” Cheney posted on X
Cheney lost her seat in Congress in 2022 after becoming an outspoken Trump critic
She was the top House Republican on the committee investigating the January 6 Capitol insurrection.
Former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head and critically injured in 2011 while meeting with constituents in Arizona, condemned Trump’s comments on Friday. She previously condemned “all political violence” following one of the assassination attempts against Trump
describing the incident as an “indefensible act of violence.”
Giffords similarly denounced Trump’s suggestion that Cheney should be shot.
“Declaring that a person should be shot and killed simply for supporting a different candidate is un-American
Any Republican who claims to respect the constitution and rule of law has a responsibility to speak out against Donald Trump’s dangerous comments immediately,” Giffords said in a statement

Harris said that she was honored to have the endorsements from the Cheneys
calling them “well respected” leaders who had put loyalty to their country above their party
“It’s time to turn the page on the divisiveness
chart a new way forward,” Harris told reporters traveling with her in Pittsburgh
where Harris has been preparing for her Tuesday night debate against Trump
Following the Cheneys' voice of support for Harris, Trump wrote on Truth Social that the former vice president was an "irrelevant RINO," an acronym for "Republican in name only," and that his daughter was as well
Liz Cheney became an outspoken critic of Trump after the Jan
Her opposition to Trump ultimately cost her her congressional seat
she said she was voting for Harris because of the grave threat that Trump poses to the country
Her father has also been critical of Trump following Jan
Dick Cheney appeared in a TV ad for his daughter's campaign
calling Trump a “threat to our republic” and a “coward."
The Cheneys are not the only Republicans to come out in support for Harris. Former Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger; Olivia Troye, a former Trump White House national security official; and Stephanie Grisham, a former White House press secretary and aide to former first lady Melania Trump — all spoke at the Democratic National Convection last month
describing disillusionment in Trump's leadership
Former Congresswoman Liz Cheney revealed she will vote for Vice President Kamala Harris at a Wednesday Duke event titled "Defending Democracy."
professor of political science and director of the Duke Program in American Grand Strategy
asked Cheney if she wanted to “make news” by endorsing a presidential candidate
Cheney had previously not weighed in on which candidate she would be supporting in the 2024 presidential election
I think it is crucially important for people to recognize … that Trump poses something that should prevent people from voting for him
but I don’t believe we have the luxury of writing in candidates' names — particularly in swing states,” she said
and someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution
I have thought deeply about this and because of the danger that Donald Trump poses
Her comments elicited a standing ovation from the audience
Cheney spoke in Page Auditorium at a Sanford Distinguished Lecture
where she shared her experience as vice chairwoman of the United States House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol and gave insights into election security in advance of this November
Moments after expressing her support for Harris
has “an obligation to make sure that this election is not close” to show the world “who we are.”
Cheney spoke on the importance of voting for serious candidates and “[committing] ourselves
to having substantive debates and discussions
“We have to defeat election deniers … Here in North Carolina
that means defeating the Republican candidate for governor,” she said in reference to N.C
After the Jan 6. insurrection, Cheney became a staunch critic of Former President Donald Trump
Unlike many of her fellow Republican politicians
she publicly and consistently denounced Trump’s actions
Cheney explained that when Trump returned to the White House from speaking to the mob of his supporters at the Capitol on Jan
he watched the violence unfold on his television
She said he refused to heed pleas from his staffers and family members to call off the violence
even ignoring a note informing him that a civilian had been shot amid the chaos
he tweeted about then-Vice President Mike Pence’s apparent lack of courage
which Cheney said effectively “poured gasoline on the fire of the attack.”
“That’s a man who can never again be entrusted with power,” she said.
Cheney claimed that many members of Congress told her they would have voted to impeach Trump if it was a “secret ballot.”
When asked by Feaver why so many Republicans went back on their private commitments to break with Trump
Cheney gave a one-word explanation: “cowardice.”
Cheney also recalled a conversation with then-Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy a few days after the election
where he shared that he had met with then-president Trump who “knew he lost.”
Cheney witnessed the “breadth and the depth” of Trump’s plan to “overturn the election.” He went from pushing state legislatures to throw out their electoral votes for Biden to pressuring the vice president and Department of Justice
“Each time something was tried and failed … he would move on to the next piece of it,” she said
Cheney also spoke of McCarthy’s visit to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort after Jan
many of the largest corporations in the country announced they would not be donating to Republicans … So [McCarthy] needed money
and he needed access to Donald Trump's donor lists,” Cheney explained
Cheney saw McCarthy’s actions as enabling other Republicans “to bring [Trump] back into the fold in exchange for access to those lists.”
She recognized the “courage” of others who stood up to Trump
former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson
former Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Matthews and Russell Bowers
“[If] Vice President Pence had not withstood the pressure from Donald Trump to act in a way that was illegal and unconstitutional
we would have been in a very much more serious constitutional crisis.”
Cheney pointed out that Trump’s current running mate
repeatedly that he will not do what Mike Pence did
She believes that the Republican Party is no longer characterized by “substance” and “policy.”
“I don't know that the current Republican Party can be resuscitated,” Cheney said
“I think that there's going to have to be very
Cheney called upon young people to “step up” and “get to the polls.”
“Much of the work that we're going to have to do sort of post this election cycle is getting back to a place where this country has two strong political parties that embrace the Constitution and where we can have substantive debates,” Cheney said

“Harris is standing in the breach at a critical moment,” the former GOP congresswoman told the crowd

In the symbolic birthplace of the Republican Party
Vice President Kamala Harris campaigned Wednesday alongside former GOP Rep
Liz Cheney — a display of political unity with little modern precedent as Harris continues her effort to win over moderate and Republican voters ahead of Election Day
“Vice President Harris is standing in the breach at a critical moment in our nation’s history
She is working to unite reasonable people from all across the political spectrum,” Cheney told the crowd in Ripon
“I know that she loves our country and I know that she will be a president for all Americans.”
6 attack featured prominently in Cheney’s remarks on Wednesday
where she said Trump’s support for the insurrectionists should disqualify him from the presidency.
“What January 6 showed us is there is not an ounce of compassion in Donald Trump
And Donald Trump is not fit to lead this great nation,” she said
surrounded by banners reading: “Country Over Party.”
Harris’ appearance with Cheney in Wisconsin — one of the states that could decide the presidential election — shows an aggressive effort to court moderate Democrats and Republican voters who may be hesitant to vote for the GOP nominee
Her campaign has also touted endorsements from former Arizona Sen
and a host of former Trump White House officials.
“Through all my decades in law enforcement I never asked a victim or a witness
‘Are you a Republican or a Democrat?’ The only question I asked is
‘Are you ok?’ And that is the kind of president you deserve
and I pledge to you that is the kind of president I will be,” Harris said

(AP) — Donald Trump is suggesting that former Rep
one of his most prominent Republican critics
should have rifles “shooting at her” to see how she feels about sending troops to fight
It was his latest suggestion that his rivals should be targeted with violence
Cheney responded by branding the GOP presidential nominee a “cruel
unstable man who wants to be a tyrant.”
WATCH: The potential economic impact of Trump’s mass deportation promise
The Republican presidential candidate has been using increasingly threatening rhetoric against his adversaries and talked of “enemies from within” undermining the country
Some of his former senior aides and Vice President Kamala Harris have labeled him a fascist in response
At an event late Thursday in Arizona with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson
Trump was asked whether it was strange to see Cheney campaign against him
The former Wyoming congresswoman has vocally opposed Trump since the Jan
Capitol and endorsed Democrat Kamala Harris
joining the vice president at recent stops as they try to win over Republicans disaffected with Trump
Trump called Cheney “a deranged person” and added
“But the reason she couldn’t stand me is that she always wanted to go to war with people
If it were up to her we’d be in 50 different countries.”
The former president continued: “She’s a radical war hawk
Let’s put her with the rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her
“You know they’re all war hawks when they’re sitting in Washington in a nice building saying
well let’s send 10,000 troops right into the mouth of the enemy,” Trump said
Cheney responded Friday in a post on X: “This is how dictators destroy free nations
They threaten those who speak against them with death
We cannot entrust our country and our freedom to a petty
after Harris’ campaign and other Trump critics on social media had pounced on his comment
Trump’s campaign said he “was talking about how Liz Cheney wants to send America’s sons and daughters to fight in wars despite never being in a war herself.”
his campaign said Trump “was clearly describing a combat zone.”
The campaign said his comments were about his message that Harris and Cheney would lead to war and young people dying in conflict
He has claimed that if elected president again
he will “prevent World War III” and has falsely claimed that Harris has spoken about reinstating the military draft
But Trump’s comments seeming to suggest Cheney face a firing squad sparked alarm from his critics
Trump has been fixated on the Americans he believes have wronged or betrayed him
He has portrayed them as worse than the United States’ foreign adversaries
referring to them as “enemies from within.”
He’s threatened to use the federal government
And he has repeatedly threatened “long term prison sentences” for those “involved in unscrupulous behavior” this election
He said people he labeled as “the enemy from within” should be “very easily handled by
Some of Trump’s supporters have said his talk of vengeance is either justified or hyperbole

Liz Cheney’s campaign came to an end in January 2014
citing serious health challenges in her family
During her time in Congress, Cheney served on the House Rules Committee, Natural Resources Committee, and Armed Services Committee. In 2018 she was elected chair of the House Republican Conference, effective 2019, making her the third-ranking Republican in the House. Cheney largely voted in step with the agenda of the Republican president, Donald Trump (2017–21)
when the House held a vote to impeach him in 2019
she voted against the two articles of impeachment
in May 2022 Cheney announced that she was running for reelection
the Select Committee’s televised hearings began
with Cheney taking a prominent role in the proceedings
Her term in Congress ended in January 2023
Cheney remained a vocal opponent of Trump, especially after he entered the 2024 presidential race. She campaigned for the Democratic nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris
In 2025 Biden awarded Cheney the Presidential Citizens Medal
The statement announcing her selection stated:
Biden issued preemptive pardons to Cheney and others who were believed to be targets of Trump’s incoming administration; Trump had vowed “retribution” against those he perceived as his enemies
The issuance of these pardons should not be mistaken as an acknowledgment that any individual engaged in any wrongdoing, nor should acceptance be misconstrued as an admission of guilt for any offense. Our nation owes these public servants a debt of gratitude for their tireless commitment to our country
Cheney wrote three books with her father: her father’s autobiography
My Time: A Personal and Political Memoir (2011); Exceptional: Why the World Needs a Powerful America (2015); and Heart: An American Medical Odyssey (2013)
which was also written with her father’s heart surgeon
In 2023 she published Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning

Harris’ campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon said in a statement Wednesday night: “The Vice President is proud to have earned Congresswoman Cheney’s vote
She is a patriot who loves this country and puts our democracy and our Constitution first.”
Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung responded: “Who is Liz Cheney and what does she do?”
Cheney was in House Republican leadership at the time of the Jan

She lost her leadership post and was one of the few Republicans willing to serve on the Jan
which was appointed by Democrats who controlled the House at the time
About Search
just think that we're sitting around the kitchen table and we're jamming about all kinds of stuff
That's the feeling I want to have at this —
CHENEY: This is like a Kennedy family kitchen table
this is — I was saying before both of you walked out
this is historic — so I hope everybody takes this in for a minute — to have a leader of the Republican Party and the vice president of the United States
Did you ever think in your wildest dreams that you would be running for president alongside Liz Cheney
campaigning for you — a member of a opposing party putting herself on the line for you
Thank you all for taking time out of your busy lives to be here and have this conversation
And I think we are all here together because we have many things in common
and most of my career has been spent outside of Washington
It never would have even occurred to me to ask that
having taken the oath of office to the Constitution of the United ta- — States at least six times
I believe what is at stake in this election is so fundamental for us as Americans
And it is about: Do we take seriously the importance of a president who obeys the oath to be loyal to the Constitution of the United States
Do we prioritize a president of the United States who cares about rule of law
much less the spirit with which they approach this most powerful position
There's so much about this last era — when I talk about "turn the page," that's what I'm referring to
like the last decade — that has been about some powerful forces suggesting that the measure of the strength of a leader is based on who you beat down instead of what I think most of us believe
that the real measure of the strength of a leader is based on who you lift up
I'm not surprised that Liz Cheney and I are on the same stage 15 days before the election
SHRIVER: And I think a lot of people are surprised
Are you surprised that you're out here campaigning for a Democrat
against the party that you've been a part of your entire life
is we all know — everyone who watched January 6th knows
and then he sat in his dining room and he watched the attack on television
People pleaded with him to tell the mob to leave
And he watched law enforcement officers be brutally beaten
I think to anyone who's taken the oath of office
makes someone absolutely unfit ever to be president again
Now — (applause) — I — I could have just said
I'm going to do everything I can to work against Donald Trump
and there are a lot of Republicans who have said that
CHENEY: I have decided — and I am very proud and I'm honored to have made the decision — to endorse Vice President Harris
And — and I have gotten to spend time with Vice President Harris
I have had the chance to talk with her about how important it is that we have two strong parties in our country
about the kind of president that I know she'll be
And I think all of us — it doesn't matter what party you're in — we all know this is a good and an honorable and a great nation
and we have to have leaders — you might say
"I'm not going to agree on every issue" — but we have to have leaders who take that seriously
We have to have leaders who are going to be sincere
I want my children to know that there is someone sitting in the Oval Office that they can look up to
And I'm incredibly proud and I know that Vice President Harris will be that
I have seen a lot of Republicans go up to Liz Cheney and thank her
And they may not be doing it publicly — they may not be doing it publicly
where there's something — an undercurrent that is violent in terms of the language and the tenor
And for her to show the courage she has shown is extraordinary
But she's — I've seen Republicans come up to her and — and I — from my vantage point
because there are a lot of people who are scared
What has been the personal cost for you to do so
CHENEY: It — it was not — it wasn't scary at all
because when I look at the — the nature of the threat that Donald Trump poses and — and
Donald Trump is doing everything he can to try to get people to forget about what he did — what he did on January 6th
And — and when you think about that level of instability
that's not someone that you can entrust with the power of the Oval Office
I — I think that we are facing a — a choice in this election
It's not about party; it's about right and wrong
And — and I certainly have many Republicans who will say to me
"I can't be public." They do worry about a whole range of things —
And I would just remind people: If you're at all concerned
you can vote your conscience and not ever have to say a word to anybody
(Applause.) And there will be millions of Republicans who do that on November 5th — vote for Vice President Harris
I — I love that you said you weren't scared at all
because most people will talk today about "I'm afraid to say anything on social media." "I'm afraid to speak in my place of worship." "I'm aprai- — afraid to speak where I work." "I'm afraid."
I think that — that the point you're making is a really important one
Think about what's happened in our country
when — when Donald Trump says that his political opponents are the enemy within and when he contemplates deploying force against them
the response that we all have should not be to be so afraid we don't act
THE VICE PRESIDENT: I — I would add to that an additional point
which is — and don't think it's a sick sense of humor and relegate it to simply being that
I do believe Donald Trump to be an unserious man
but the consequences of him ever being in the White House again are brutally serious
And — and take it from the people who know him best: his former chief of staff when he was president; two former Defense secretaries; his national security advisor; and
who have all in one way or another used the word that he is "unfit" to be president again and is dangerous
Listen to the report that — what his former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
said about him: that he is "fascist to the core."
And these are people who were in his administration
who worked closely with him in the Oval Office and the Situation Room
because some people find it humorous what he says and — and think it's just silly
(Applause.) (Laughs.) We'll take care of November
that he would terminate the Constitution of the United States should never again stand behind the seal of the president of the United States — never again
I wanted to ask you — several people that I talked to in preparation for this — when I asked them
but I don't have a feel for her." What are three things you can tell this audience about you that aren't in your ads
that people aren't telling people on the robocalls
that perhaps they just wouldn't know that might give them a feeling for who you are as a woman
THE VICE PRESIDENT: How much time do we have
THE VICE PRESIDENT: I — I have lived a full life
in large part — there are many reasons but one very fundamental is
she has to come live with us," and she did
And I decided I wanted to take on a career and a life that was about protecting the most vulnerable
I served as attorney general of California two terms
I was the — the top law enforcement officer of the biggest state in the country
it included prosecuting transnational criminal organizations for the trafficking of guns
I did the work of taking on the big banks during the foreclosure crisis and delivered $20 billion for homeowners who had been targeted with predatory lending practices
(Applause.) I took on the big pharmaceutical companies on behalf of consumers
the work that you and I have done over the years focusing on women's health
One of my priorities is — has been maternal mortality
But I — I have only had one client in my career: the people
And my belief is that there is great nobility in public service if one understands that they hold the office in the public trust
It is about what you can do that lifts up the condition of people
And there is so much about how I think about my responsibility
and I am here to ask for your vote — is that I do — I intend to be a president for all Americans
understanding that the vast majority of us have so much more in common than what separates us
And this era that was kind of initiated by Donald Trump has not only been exhausting
The notion that a president of the United States would encourage Americans to point fingers at each other
that — that there would be a suggestion that we are a divided country
that — instead of knowing we have so much more in common than what separates us
My most recent overseas trips as vice president — which were relatively close to
the election — our allies have expressed real concern
when we walk in a room representing the United States of America
knowing that we have the self-appointed and earned authority to talk about the importance of democracy and rule of law
But the thing about being a role model — it's all role models who are here — people watch what you do to see if it matches up to what you say
People around the world are watching this election
And my — one fear I have is I hope and I pray that we
understand not only what is at stake for us in this election but how much we mean to the rest of the world
There is so much at stake in this election
tell us real quick — I want to get to our first question
But you've been traveling with the vice president
Tell the audience what you see that perhaps
the camera doesn't get or the ads don't get so that they can get a sense of her that you have
I — I think that what I can tell you is that what the vice president is saying about wanting to be a president for all Americans
those are things that — that come across very
The very first campaign I ever volunteered in was for President Gerald Ford in 1976
the — the fact that — that I — I believe so strongly that in this election — in this election
we need to elect the person who is the responsible adult — (laughter and applause) — and — and we need —
And — and there is a lot — both parties do it
There is a lot of vilification that goes on
CHENEY: And — and I think it's really important for people to — to think very carefully about the power that we're going to invest in the president of the United States and what it would mean to — to give that power to Donald Trump
who are opposing him are the people who know him best
the people who worked most closely with him
I would just say I — I know that the vice president has had the range of experience
She is supremely qualified to be president of the United States
I think there — there — sometimes there are some men who suggest that she's not
And that she's somebody that I know I can count on who will put the good of this country first
I want to go — I want to go over here to Cecelia
which was a Republican stronghold as she grew up
and she's here with a question for the vice president
Q: Thank you both for coming to Michigan today for this important event
for — to you and your father for exemplifying putting country over party
I hope you had a wonderful birthday yesterday
Q: From the shootings at Oxford High School to my alma mater
to an attack at a kid's splash pad this summer just a few miles away from here
the issue of gun violence hits very close to home for our community
I learned from our school district that my preschooler will be going through his first active shooter drill
Q: As a gun violence survivor and mother of two young children
the issue of gun violence and the safety of my children in their schools and in our community is my top priority
if you are elected president and there is a Republican majority in Congress
how will you work with them to make impactful and immediate progress around gun violence
And thank you and — for your courage to speak up about this
We had a bipartisan group of — of folks in Congress who came together for the Safer Communities Act
which is the first meaningful piece of gun safety legislation in 30 years
and it really does tell us that we have a will within the United States Congress to work in a bipartisan way
And — and then-Congresswoman Cheney was one of those Republicans that actually voted for it
And it is through the — the lens of many experiences
including act- — I'm so sorry about your kids going through active shooter drills
It's traumatic that our children — you know
Our children are now learning how to keep themselves safe if there's an active shooter at their school
I did a tour last year of — of colleges — with college-aged kids
And I would ask the room — the auditorium would be packed — college-age kids — and I'd ask them
"Raise your hand if at any point between kindergarten and 12th grade you had to endure an active shooter drill." Almost every hand went up
Our kids are growing up where they are learning that they may be unsafe in the classroom where they should be absorbing the wonders of the world
"Yeah" — we were talking about this — and said to me
that's why I don't like going to fifth period." I said
Why don't you like going to fifth period?" "Because in that classroom
we must also consider the trauma that is the trauma of — the direct trauma for those who have been directly affected by gun violence
including that to our kids who are in schools across our country doing this — not to mention their teachers
who want to teach and not also have to worry about will they be able to physically protect a child from a bullet
Here's how I think about it in terms of the macro point
a false choice that suggests you're either in favor of the Second Amendment or you want to take everyone's guns away
I have talked about the fact both Tim Walz and I are gun owners
I also believe we need reasonable gun safety laws
(Applause.) And — and reports say that the majority of NRA members agree on
Here's what it is: You just might want to know before someone can buy a lethal weapon whether they've been found by a court to be a danger to themselves or others
(Applause.) We need commonsense gun safety laws
And I will continue — I've done it throughout my career — work with all of our colleagues across the aisle
But this is not — I'm not trying to take anybody's guns away from them
I want to come back to the issue of public safety in a minute
He's a former Republican member of the Michigan House of Representatives
and he's here with a question about national security
thank both of you for being here this afternoon
I really appreciate your coming to the state of Michigan to — to be here
or militarily to deter Russia from continuing its war on the independent nation of Ukraine while simultaneously strengthening our own U.S
I was actually in Munich at the Munich Security Conference delivering a speech when I first met with President Zelenskyy of Ukraine
and it was just days before Russia invaded
because the United States has rightly taken a position as a leader — a global leader on international rules and norms — that we must stand in support of one of the most important international rules and norms
which is the importance of protecting sovereignty and territorial integrity
the importance of standing strong in opposition to the notion that
Russia would attempt to change borders by force
to invade another nation — a sovereign nation by force
there is a huge difference between my opponent and me on this very fundamental issue
Back to the conversation about — there was a time when we used to — there was a phrase that I'll paraphrase that
that there are certain things — in particular
the matters of national security — where it's not about partisanship; it's about where should America stand in terms of supporting our allies and standing for certain principles
as a — as a point of reference for me in terms of how I feel about this
I — for the four years that I was in the United States Senate
my favorite committee was the Senate Intelligence Committee
and we would meet in a room that's called a SCIF
And it's — it's basically a — (laughs) — it's a very secure room
Everyone has to leave their cell phone outside
and we would go in that room and receive classified information from America's intelligence community
about hot spots around the world and threats to our national security
And when we went in that room — and this is why it was my favorite committee — people would take off their suit jacket
And we weren't Democrats or Republicans; we were Americans
And that is so important on a number of issues we are discussing this afternoon but
has made it a thing of his to admire dictators and autocrats around the world
He exchanged love letters with Kim Jong Un
He has openly praised the president of Russia
in the height of COVID — remember everyone was scrambling to get their hands on COVID tests
Remember when Americans were dying by the hundreds every day
And Donald Trump secretly sent COVID tests to the president of Russia for his personal use
He has said — Donald Trump — "I will solve the matter of Ukraine and Russia in a day." Read through and understand what he is saying
He would have Ukraine surrender its fight against an aggressor violating its sovereignty
And understand what that would mean for America and our standing around the world
there has been bipartisan support — and to your point of what — where you stand — on this very fundamental issue
But this is a — this is a very vivid example of what is at stake in this election
Because Donald Trump has been very clear: He would give away the shop
He has been manipulated and is so clearly able to be manipulated by favor and flattery
including from dictators and autocrats around the world
And America knows that that is not how we stand
We fight in favor of our strength and our role as a leader in bringing the Allies together and standing for foundational and fundamental principles
SHRIVER: Congressman Cheney — (applause) — I know
the issue of national security is one of the big reasons you're here and supporting the vice president
Can you expand on that answer and add your thoughts to it
I think that if — if you look at where the Republican Party is today
there's been a really dangerous embrace of isolationism
he heaps praise on the world's most evil people while he attacks
the — the reality is that since the end of World War II
And we've led — and that has been necessary to defend our freedom
And when Donald Trump says that he's going to withdraw from NATO
when he invites Vladimir Putin to invade NATO
when he suggests that it is Zelenskyy's fault that Ukraine was invaded
For anybody who is a Republican who is thinking that
they might vote for Donald Trump because of national security policy
America will find our very freedom and security challenged and threatened
And one final point on this: Don't think that Congress can stop him
because Congress will step in." All he has to do is what he's doing — is say
"I won't fulfill our NATO treaty obligations," and — and NATO begins to unravel
it is — it is an incredibly dangerous thing to think about a foreign policy
a national security policy led by somebody who is — is as unstable as Donald Trump is
And it's a risk we just simply can't take as a nation
THE VICE PRESIDENT: And I'm going to add for emphasis that — let's also be clear about on the subject
Donald Trump's approach would be to surrender
That is signaling to the president of Russia he can get away with what he has done
Understand — look at the map — Poland would be next
are — the reason that they have been so thankful for the position of strength we have taken in bringing the Allies together is because they are fully aware of and remember — to the congresswoman's point — World War II
this — this concept of isolation — we were once there as a nation
and it is because America jumped in that we were ultimately able to win that war
and it should be a constant reminder to us — we have to remember history — that isolationism
which is exactly what Donald Trump is pushing — pull out of NATO
abandon our friends — isolationism is not insulation
It will not insulate us from harm in terms of our national security
I say that to emphasize a point that the congresswoman made
and the other point I'd make is also check out where he's been on how he thinks about America's military and service members
He said he didn't like him because he got caught
You look — he's called members of our military "suckers" and "losers." And then look at how some of the highest-ranking members of our military
the chairman — the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
leader in our mil- — in America's military
how he has assessed Donald Trump — fascism "to his core."
SHRIVER: There are your talking points for the kitchen table
Courtney is — Courtney Gabbara Agrusa is a wife
Madam Vice President Harris and Representative Cheney
and I am a first-generation Chaldean American
Chaldeans are Indigenous Iraqis who are Catholic
and we are predominantly in the metro Detroit area
but the recent political climate has really begun to divide us
Q: While I know that you have discussed several bipartisan proposals over the course of your campaign
what would you say to people like myself who are part of these traditionally conservative communities who want to move forward
but are feeling the pref- — the pressures of the political divide
And I've actually met with — with members and leaders in the Chaldean community
I think that there is something at stake that is about core values
as well as what is at stake in terms of the risk and the danger
And I would offer you an example of what I think would be an important issue that would affect the Chaldean community and all Americans
the issue of — of how we think about health care in America
I know enough about the culture and to know that it is reflective of who we are as Americans in general
We respect our elders; we take care of them
I will share with you a specific proposal that is an extension of how I think about things
I took care of my mother when she was sick
And for anyone taking care of or who has taken care of an elder relative
It's about trying to cook something they feel like eating
It is trying to find clothes that don't irritate their skin or help them put on a sweater
It's about trying to figure out something you can say that will bring a smile to their face or make them laugh
a lot of people doing that and also raising young kids
And the way the system currently works — well
you may have to spend down all of your savings to be able to qualify for Medicaid or you may have to quit your job to be able to do what you need to do to take care of your children and take care of your relative — your older relative
part of my proposal and the plan is that we're going to now reconfigure so that Medicare covers home health care for our seniors
in addition to everything that we've discussed already about national security
because I absolutely do believe America is ready for a new generation of leadership that is taking on issues clear-eyed about what is going on that affects everybody — it doesn't matter their political party; issues that are fundamentally about dignity
also about economic issues; and taking it on in a way that we relieve the American people of the burdens that get in the way of productivity and a certain quality of life
I believe we need to have an economy that I call an opportunity economy
where everyone has the opportunity to thrive — not just get by but get ahead
And this is one example I would offer under the broader point
taking on problems from a commonsense approach that is about just practical work
I will work as I have with the private sector
I believe we have to invest in America's economy and in America's industry and America's entrepreneurs
take care of those that are the most in need of just a little support to be able to not just get by but get ahead
I just want to — we have two minutes left — (applause) — and when you hear the phrase a "new way forward," when you hear "country over party," what does that mean to you
what does a new way forward mean for families like everybody here
when you think about America and — and the beacon of hope that we have been for so many years for so many communities
also how tremendously enriched we have been by communities — immigrants who want to come here and build a life
all of that depends upon fundamentally defending the rule of law
That's — that's what makes all of our opportunity and our freedom possible
And — and at the same time that we're that beacon for the world
it's also because — because we're a good nation —
CHENEY: — and because you know when — when you — when you look at who our leader is going to be
what — what Donald Trump represents is — is
just cruel and — and not — not the kind of dignity and — and the kind of person that we all want to be able to look up to
But — but what I would say is that if people are uncertain
I don't know that I can support Vice President Harris," I would say I don't know if anybody is more conservative than I am
(Laughter.) And — and I understand the most conservative value there is is to defend the Constitution
And if we don't come together to do that then — (applause) —
a new way forward is this: It's what you're seeing up here
necessarily sure I agree with you on this issue or that issue
Why do you believe that?" Someone who is willing to honor and respect all perspectives and points of views
And there's only one candidate in this race who does that
a lot of polling of undecided voters who call themselves "the exhausted majority" said
I just want leaders who speak respectfully to one another
that's considered a new way forward as the — as Representative Cheney —
I wake up in the middle of the night usually these days
I — I think that's really important to just kind of — you know
and I make sure that I talk to the kids and my husband every day
We've been — Doug and I've been kind of tr- — you know
so we're not with each other every day these days
if I can just speak to the — what people are feeling
the nature of a democracy is such that I think there's a duality
there's an incredible strength when our democracy is intact
an incredible strength in what it does to protect the freedoms and rights of its people
as long as we can keep it — in our democracy
every individual has the power to make a decision about what this will be
and that's — and so let's not feel powerless
Let's not let the som- — and I get it — overwhelming nature of this all make us feel powerless
and that's not our character as the American people
and we stand on broad shoulders of people who have fought this fight before for our country
let us look at the challenge then that we are being presented and not be overwhelmed by it
The baton is now in our hands to fight for — not against
be joyful in what we will do in the process of owning that
which is knowing that we can and will build community and coalitions and remind people that we're all in this together
Let's not let the overwhelming nature of this strip us of our strength
I want to — I want to thank everybody here
I think you got a great glimpse into who this woman is
And I want to leave you with this quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson that I think speaks to this moment
there is always someone to tell you that you're wrong
There are always difficulties arising which tempt you to believe that your critics are right
To map out a course of action and follow it to the end requires great courage."

The town known as the birthplace of the Republican Party is an unlikely campaign stop for a Democratic presidential candidate
But on Thursday, Vice President Harris rallied in Ripon, Wis. — home to the Little White Schoolhouse
where an 1854 meeting led to the formation of the Republican Party
It was the backdrop for a speech from former GOP Rep. Liz Cheney, who endorsed Harris last month
Cheney laid out her own history with the Republican party
from volunteering as a young person to serving in Congress
I am proudly casting my vote for Vice President Kamala Harris," Cheney said
and I know that she will be a president for all Americans," Cheney added
I am honored to join her in this urgent cause."
Cheney spoke at length about why she thinks Harris' opponent
though she backed him in both 2016 and 2020
She said he broke his oath of office by attempting to stay in office after losing the election
taking actions that led to the violent riot at the Capitol on Jan
"What January 6th shows us is that there is not an ounce of compassion in Donald Trump
and Donald Trump is not fit to lead this good and great nation," she said
Cheney herself was a member of the Congressional committee that investigated Trump for his actions on and leading up to January 6 — and she voted to impeach Trump
She later lost her bid for reelection in 2022 to a Trump-backed candidate
Asked about the Ripon event during an appearance on Fox News
Trump attacked Cheney as a "stupid war hawk" and predicted she would hurt Harris' campaign
she thanked Cheney for her courage and said it was a "profound honor" to have her support
and we are going to get back to a healthy two-party system
where we will have vigorous debates," Harris said to Cheney
Harris talked about her commitment to the Constitution and to upholding democracy — an issue that is a deciding factor for a majority of voters this year
"I believe that anyone who recklessly tramples on our democratic values as Donald Trump has
anyone who is actively and violently obstructed the will of the people and the peaceful transfer of power as Donald Trump has
'termination of the Constitution of the United States' as Donald Trump has
must never again stand behind the seal of the president of the United States," Harris said
Harris' campaign has worked to highlight support from more than 200 prominent Republicans as she works in swing states like Wisconsin to win over more independents and Republicans disaffected with Trump
Dick Cheney said in a statement last month that Trump "can never be trusted with power again" because he “tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him.”

dozens of prominent security and military officials and Republican politicians have come out against Donald Trump
Way out in front of this movement was Liz Cheney
she was the third-ranking Republican in Congress
but after the January 6th insurrection she voted to impeach Trump
She then served as vice-chair of the House Select Committee on the January 6th attack
She must have expected it would cost her the midterms and her seat in Congress
which ended up being the case when Wyoming voters rejected her in 2022
campaigning forcefully on behalf of Vice-President Harris
David Remnick spoke with Cheney last week at The New Yorker Festival
“It absolutely proves the danger of Donald Trump,” Cheney said
“When you have Jeff Bezos apparently afraid to issue an endorsement for the only candidate in the race who’s a stable
that tells you why we have to work so hard to make sure that Donald Trump isn’t elected,” Cheney told Remnick
“And I cancelled my subscription to the Washington Post.”
