A wave of new stores are planned to arrive at the Cherry Hill Mall, including one that would have customers climbing the walls
The mall's owner, Philadelphia-based PREIT, on Thursday said it's "targeting" a 2026 debut for Dick's House of Sport. The 120,000-square-foot store is to replace a nine-story office building
Security measure: Cherry Hill Mall policy limits access for unaccompanied minors
"These moves reflect PREIT’s strategy of transforming key assets into dynamic lifestyle destinations," the company said in a statement
Dick's House of Sport will offer experiences that include a climbing wall
a sport cage is to be available for baseball
It's intended to provide the opportunity for customers to try products "while measuring and tracking their performance," PREIT's statement said
The fenced field and track would be accessible only from inside the store
according to information provided to members of Cherry Hill's planning board
The two-story sporting goods store also would offer a new entrance to the nearby mall
PREIT added that the demolition of the One Cherry Hill office building reflects "a focus on repurposing underutilized real estate and increasing consumer engagement."

A local mall will now be enforcing a new, strict policy for unaccompanied teen shoppers on a certain day and time, according to a report from Patch.com.
There's been a real problem with unruly teens in malls
and in other public places around the Garden State
Back in 2017, there was a huge disturbance in Cherry Hill Mall involving hundreds of teens when the mall was packed with people, the article says.
That incident led to a ban of teens without supervision in the mall the day after Christmas that year
More recently, just a few weeks ago (March 22, 2025), there was a fight involving two groups of mostly teens at the mall, reports say.
In fact, 6abc reports that two people were hurt in the scuffle and had to be treated at a local hospital
None of the minors involved live in Cherry Hill.
If you are under the age of 18, you must have a parent or legal guardian with you, who's 21 or older on Saturdays, after 4pm, according to the mall's updated code of conduct.
If you're spotted in the mall after 4pm, security may ask for your ID (if the age of the teen or guardian isn't easy to tell)
there does not have to be a parent present when arriving at the mall
but the teen must show proof of employment
The new restriction is in effect for the mall itself

Over the weekend of April 5-6, Cherry Hill Mall implemented a new parental supervision policy that mall officials said would address teens fighting and police being called to the mall
states that mall security will begin monitoring people entering the mall beginning at 4 p.m
Youth not accompanied by an adult parent or guardian older than 21 will be asked to leave
Or they will be asked to return with an adult

But they'll have to show proof of employment and report immediately to their place of employment

FOX 29 News spoke with several mall customers who reported mixed feelings about the mall's new policy.
"Parents used to drop their kids off at the mall and pick them up
Can't do that anymore because they travel in groups and shoplift
They're harassing people," said Randi Freedman from Cherry Hill
they need to find something for the teenagers to do
Teenagers have money; they have their own money
They can't go spend it in the mall?" asked Cheryl Washington from Camden

A new policy at Cherry Hill Mall prohibits unaccompanied minors from being there after 4 p.m
maintains that "minors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is 21 years or older."
The change comes two weeks after Cherry Hill police responded to a fight involving two groups at the shopping center at Route 38 and Haddonfield Road

NJ — Cherry Hill Mall's ban on unaccompanied minors now extends past the holiday season
Visitors under 18 now must be accompanied by an parent or legal guardian who's 21 or older after 4 p.m
In recent years, the mall has banned unaccompanied minors on the day after Christmas — following a 2017 incident when hundreds of teens became unruly in the crowded shopping center
The updated parental-supervision policy came two weeks after a fight at Cherry Hill Mall
Two people were injured in the altercation between two groups of primarily minors
security will require photo ID "if the age of the youth and/or parent or legal guardian is not easily determined." This applies to visitors entering the mall after 4 p.m
Saturdays and those inside the mall after the cutoff time
Youth who work at the mall can enter without an adult
go directly to their workplace and leave the mall when their shift ends
The policy extends to the entire mall including the parking lots
and any corridor leading to the mall except stores with exterior entrances
Despite juvenile offenses trending downward nationally, incidents of unruly behavior have prompted a number of malls around the nation to prohibit unaccompanied minors. In South Jersey, Deptford Mall bans unaccompanied youth on weekends

A Dick’s House of Sport will bring a large expansion of experiential retail to the northeast corner of Cherry Hill Mall in 2026
and batting and soccer cages to the 1.3 million-square-foot shopping center
The Inquirer reported in November that a 120,000-square-foot
two-story sporting goods store with interactive elements would be replacing the 57-year-old office tower that currently occupies part of that corner of the site
is officially revealing other new retail tenants they are welcoming to Cherry Hill Mall while highlighting the new capstone tenant
“In the other malls where they’ve opened [Dick’s House of Sport]
we’ve seen increased traffic flow” to the rest of the property
“It’s a great catalyst and anchor for the asset.”
Cherry Hill Mall also will add retailers including the luxury fashion brand Coach
But the House of Sport is PREIT’s headline acquisition
The company frames it as a new front door to the mall
offering not just retail but an array of interactive experiences that encourages shoppers to linger
“If we can get people to spend more time at the property
then they’re more likely to have a better shopping experience,” Aristone said
Attractions include a climbing wall and Trackman golf simulators that will allow players to practice indoors
An 18,000-square-foot outdoor track and field space will allow customers to try equipment before they buy
Multisport indoor cages will allow visitors to practice baseball
and soccer — and give another opportunity to test the sporting goods
PREIT hosts a House of Sport at its Viewmont Mall in Scranton
and the company has been impressed by its ability to attract shoppers beyond what might be imagined as Dick’s core customer base
That made it an even more attractive tenant to replace the faded office tower in Cherry Hill
where the costs of rehabilitation wouldn’t have been worth the rents PREIT could command post-pandemic
House of Sport is also an example of a broader kind of interactive retail that has been attracting users since the pandemic
(DICKS was represented by Brian Bruzek of CBRE for the deal with PREIT.)
As traditional retail faces competition from online sellers
storefronts in downtowns and malls alike have been courting businesses that offer the kinds of in-person interaction that can give property owners a competitive advantage against internet-based sellers
These are the kinds of businesses that help traditional retail centers offer an alternative that “the Amazons of the world are unable to compete with,” said Eric Flocco, executive vice president of Wolf Commercial Real Estate, in an interview with The Inquirer last year
Many malls have struggled in recent years, and PREIT itself suffered two bankruptcies and now has new owners
But the Cherry Hill Mall remains the crown jewel of the company’s business and the premier shopping center of South Jersey
Aristone says that these acquisitions ensure that Cherry Hill Mall will continue its preeminent position with top-of-the-market traditional and experiential retail
He said the South Jersey property is well positioned to attract shoppers from Center City
especially as it loses traditional retailers like Macy’s and as the Fashion District
“You are going to see the growth of that Center City customer to our mall,” Aristone said
and I think that customers who lose the experience of shopping at the Macy’s downtown will probably migrate over to Cherry Hill.”

Not by a long shot.Cherry Hill is almost synonymous with its mall
but the people who live there know this former farming community is a treasure — even without a cute shopping street
Does Cherry Hill — a town with so many commercial hubs and no apparent walkability between them — have a center of gravity

So is the once-vaunted Cherry Hill Mall — the first indoor mall east of the Mississippi — the beating heart of the township
whereas before it basically changed the game.”
So it’s not surprising that pretty much every resident I spoke with rejected the mall as the core of Cherry Hill
even if that’s what most outsiders identify the town with
that’s where that famous mall is,’” said Elias Bitar
whose family moved from South Philly to Cherry Hill when he was 8
the mall might be more of a net loss for Cherry Hill residents
“It doesn’t enhance our way of life,” he said
Barclay Farms is far from the only shopping center in this sprawling township
Some are home to well-funded chains like Dunkin’ and Honeygrow
but you can find plenty of treasures scattered amid the nail salons and phone stores
“Strip malls in Cherry Hill are home to some of the most extraordinary cuisine that any American could ever dare to dream for, and that counts for a lot,” said Lassiter, a liberal activist and Jersey politics writer who moved to town in 2004
“These restaurants and business owners are thriving and succeeding in spite of the local government
Because that money would go right back into the community
They would actually be hiring local people.”
Ejaz also thinks Cherry Hill could do more to celebrate its diversity
“We’re not utilizing it well to bring communities together in a creative way — which
it can really be very flourishing.” (Her first idea
“Maybe if we start doing some fun food festivals that will connect the community better.”)
It’s tons of families,” says chef Josh Lawler
who lives in Cherry Hill and co-owns Farm & Fisherman
“Everyone I talk to is running around with lots of activities
“We really wanted a city experience — food and cocktails from scratch
well-sourced — that didn’t exist out here for the most part," Lawler said
“And we knew Cherry Hill had a great population density of people that were going into the city anyway
Why not save those people a trip into the city and open a place that they can also bring their kids?”
The concept took a couple years for residents to fully embrace
but it’s a now a town treasure (and a rare
independently owned full-service restaurant)
Go on a weekday afternoon or evening and it’ll be noisy with customers
Cherry Hill’s most obvious drawback is needing a car for almost everything
Elias Bitar considers Lawler and company “cup-of-sugar-type friends,” but they’re located on the other side of Route 70
“There’s no way that I could get there without driving,” he said
“There’s at least one jughandle or U-turn involved.”

Saldutti chipped away at the idea that people can’t get around on foot in Cherry Hill
When I run in the morning I easily do a 6½-mile loop,” he said
“I live next to a gentleman who’s in his late 80s
He walks to Christ Our Light [Catholic Church] every Saturday night
Saldutti’s morning loop runs through a leafy section of town known as the Hunt Tract
Jay Lassiter and his husband live near this part of town
in a “mid-century modern ranch house on three wooded acres,” Lassiter said
Cherry Hill had a chance to develop a downtown
“When work began 15 years ago to transform the 226-acre former Garden State Park racetrack site into what was touted as a transit-oriented walkable community of stylish residences
it seemed that Cherry Hill would finally get a heart,” Inquirer columnist Kevin Riordan wrote in 2017
The site wound up home to a Costco
but the concept that you’re going to have that mass of people
like you’re going to have a thousand people go down to Haddonfield and shop for clothing — it’s a nice thought
“All these other towns around us have a little downtown
but they come over here to do their shopping,” he said

CHERRY HILL — A landmark office building at Cherry Hill Mall is to be demolished to make way for a sporting goods store with its own athletic field
The replacement of One Cherry Hill with an unidentified retailer should be completed in 2026
according to an application before the township’s zoning board
will raze the nine-story office building in the near future
120,000-square-foot store with a 10,300-square-foot turf field and track
Labor of love: How a mall creates its holiday display
“In addition to the typical sporting goods merchandise
the interior of the store will also include a rock-climbing wall
and other sporting services,” the application said
It added that the field “will be part of the store where customers can try out their purchases
The fenced field would be accessible only from inside the store
is expected to have approximately 40-45 employees
Workers currently are gutting the building's interior
a $630,000 project intended to prepare for demolition
The change comes as office buildings have lost their appeal in several long-developed towns across South Jersey
The office space vacancy rate was 18.5% in the Cherry Hill area in this year’s third quarter
according to a recent report from Newmark Real Estate
This rate was even higher at 22.3% in Moorestown and 25.6% in the Voorhees/Gibbsboro area
One Cherry Hill was built between Route 38 and Church Road in the late 1970s
The neighboring mall opened in 1961 as the first large indoor shopping center on the East Coast
The development would occupy approximately 2.3 acres at the 80-acre mall property
Zoning board members are to consider the application at their meeting Dec

“One of the elements here that we pride ourselves in is the restaurant row,” Ventresca said
“We worked hard to bring that to the asset.”
“The mall business is a capital-intensive business,” Ventresca said
The common thread that ties each of its malls together is how they must adapt
introduce new concepts — and spend more money to keep consumers interested
“Foot traffic is what it’s all about,” he said
Something about the idea of a crowded mall lights a fire in his eyes
Industry experts believe the mall is not extinct
there is a difference between the institution and a beloved small town mall like Granite Run
An amusement park is a tough act to follow
developers erected the Willow Grove Park Mall on its grave back in 1982
“I think the 90s are really ‘peak mall,’” Lange said
“It was a time of great economic expansion in the U.S
People who were building new malls to serve those suburbs.”
The mall became the backdrop of many iconic movies and television shows
It supported many small businesses and provided a generation of young people with their first jobs
spent his youth at the Plymouth Meeting Mall in the 1980s
“Willow Grove actually has a special place in my heart,” Ventresca said
“My parents met on the site of the former amusement park that was subsequently turned into the Willow Grove Park Mall.”
has traveled around the globe to 91 countries across all seven continents
Woodin can vividly remember shopping there with his wife and children — making pit stops at the WHYY Store of Knowledge

It was a warm hub to your senses,” Woodin said
it’s like a ghost town,” Woodin said

Meanwhile, PREIT is still trying new ways to improve Willow Grove. Tilted 10
all of the new experiences malls are banking on to lure in new customers
However, there’s some credence to Woodin’s observations. Some things have changed. Willow Grove’s iconic fountain is gone. Many of the old anchors have bid farewell. Some of the lights are often switched off. The community fashion shows are no more
Ventresca declined to comment on Willow Grove’s fiscal health
Woodin feels a sense of sadness and nostalgia for how it used to be
The restaurants with outward-facing entrances might get his money
but he has a hard time setting foot inside the mall itself
“I don’t see myself going to Willow Grove Mall at any time in the near future unless it drastically changes,” Woodin said
I’ve been to the Cheesecake Factory — but like I never even walked in or out of the mall.”
If someone closes their eyes and lists the defining features of the quintessential mall
the fountain would likely be near the top of the list
It is what inspired the namesake of Lange’s book
“Meet Me by the Fountain: An Inside History of the Mall.”
“It’s an amenity for our guests to sit and relax,” Putt said
it’s enjoyable to watch if you’re just sitting there dazing out or just relaxing
It just provides just that little bit of something to add to the environment and hopefully further appeal to some of our shoppers and make them more comfortable.”
The Cherry Hill Mall still has its fountains
Ventresca declined to answer why PREIT stripped Willow Grove Park of its iconic fountain
“I think removing the fountains is a sign of not caring,” Lange said
it’s about the fountain as something that needs daily maintenance that is pleasant for free
that is a place that you can meet at the mall.”
These days, Woodin finds himself at the Promenade at Upper Dublin
The 25-acre mixed-use complex is the modern-day successor to the outdoor shopping center
It blends 128,000 square feet of retail space with 400 apartment units to compel nearby residents to spend their dollars
“This reminds me of a European town,” Woodin said
Lifestyle centers such as the Promenade at Upper Dublin are a growing share of the retail space. BET Investments, which operates numerous Promenade-style properties across the country, did not respond to multiple requests for comment. The Promenade at Upper Dublin opened in 2020
In some cases, lifestyle centers spring up from the graves of dead malls — a second chance for cultural relevance. The Promenade at Granite Run, which opened in 2018, is one such example
professor of marketing at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business
said these types of centers can be more effective than the average mall
“It tends to be closer and there’s parking right up to the door,” Kahn said
“So one of the things that we also seeing in some of these regional malls was the configuration or reconfiguration of their space.”
She said if you want to see the future of malls
you really have to look at it from the consumer’s perspective
“There has to be something in the mall that makes it worth your while,” Kahn said
he’d rather spend an extra 15 minutes driving to the King of Prussia Mall
He said the retail giant has “anything you need” and is worth paying the tolls on the Pennsylvania Turnpike
and the King of Prussia Mall was the mall with stores,” Woodin said
“It didn’t have the warmth of Willow Grove.”
Lange said the mall was intended to solve the problem the mall’s inventor
She believes the next phase of the mall’s existence — whether they remain shopping malls or become something else — has to be seen as a problem that can be solved
malls are throwing everything at the wall to see if it sticks
PREIT anchored the Plymouth Meeting Mall with a Whole Foods
The company brought a Cooper University Health Care campus to the Moorestown Mall
Ventresca said PREIT is experimenting with constructing apartment units at some of its other properties. The company wants to bring 275 units in Plymouth Meetings’s parking lot.
and we review the portfolio on a regular basis to try and advance that effort,” he said
Lange said that what the mall was supposed to be and what the mall turned into are two different things.
“People need a social outlet and a social outlet that is low cost
I think a lot of municipalities need to think about expanding their community centers
expanding their parks to offer some of these services,” Lange said

Plans for the proposed retail store adjoining the mall and the athletic turf sports field
An advertisement in the Courier-Post newspaper in 1967 soliciting tenants for the new Cherry Hill Mall office building
Earlier versions of this story incorrectly reported when the office building first opened
The misinformation came from the Township Department of Community Development review of the application
An iconic nine-story office building — known for its giant sign of a cherry and leaves near the roof — would be demolished on the Church Road side of the Cherry Hill Mall to make way for a sporting goods store and artificial turf playing field
The One Mall Drive building was opened in the late 1960s
The sporting goods store would be just over 58 feet
two-story sporting goods store with an attached 10,300-square-foot outdoor athletic field would be built next to the mall
"A synthetic turf athletic field will be part of the store where customers can try out their purchases
In addition to the typical sporting goods merchandise
the interior of the store will also include a rock climbing wall
and other sporting services," the developer states in the plan's operations report on file with the Township
But the zoning board wants to know more details about how the athletic field would be used
of Mount Laurel and the zoning board's engineer noted in his review letter: "The applicant should provide testimony regarding the use of the proposed athletic field
If these fields are to be used by local sports teams
Discussion should include staffing and parking expectations for the use this field and any impact to traffic and parking at the mall."

NJ — Cherry Hill Mall will prohibit unaccompanied minors for part of Thursday
keeping up with the shopping center's post-Christmas protocol
Anyone 17 and younger must be with a parent or supervising adult age 21 or older from 4-7 p.m
Proof of age will be required for admittance
who will increase their presence at the mall
"Parents and guardians should not be dropping off their children unsupervised at retail shopping centers," the police department said Thursday morning
"Juveniles not acting responsibly will be escorted from the property and those engaging in criminal behavior will be arrested and prosecuted."
A parent or supervising adult can accompany up to four youths
In recent years, Cherry Hill Mall has prohibited unaccompanied children during peak hours on the day after Christmas. The policy stems from a Dec. 26, 2017, incident in which hundreds of minors became unruly inside the crowded mall
Five of them were charged with offenses including disorderly conduct and resisting arrest
The day after Christmas is one of the busiest shopping days of the year
belated holiday shopping and gift card spending contributing to an influx of retail traffic
Almost all schools are also off for winter break during that time

An office building that promised “every conceivable ultra-modern convenience” when it debuted behind the Cherry Hill Mall in 1968 is being torn down to make way for a sports-themed “experiential” retail complex
An application before the township zoning board proposes replacing the nine-story One Cherry Hill building with a two-story
The store would also have a 10,300-square-foot outdoor “synthetic turf athletic field” connecting it with the mall
“It’s a very exciting and creative use of the property ..
and this proposed project will continue to make the mall a destination for our region,” Mayor David Fleisher said in a statement
PREIT, the Philadelphia company that owns the mall, declined to comment. The Dick’s Sporting Goods chain, identified by the 42 Freeway website as the prospective tenant of the property
The website reported that a Dick’s House of Sport
including retail space and active indoor and outdoor recreational facilities
The application is scheduled for review by the Cherry Hill zoning board on Dec
The proposed new use for the site is permitted
but redrawing of lot lines will require approval
Eric Flocco, executive vice president of Wolf Commercial Real Estate in Mount Laurel
was not familiar with the Cherry Hill proposal
but he described “experiential” retail as a viable format for repurposing vacant big box stores
as well as for new facilities to draw more potential shoppers to malls and other retail locations
Stores that attract customers by offering active recreational opportunities are something “the Amazons of the world are unable to compete with,” Flocco said
A few miles east on Route 38 from Cherry Hill Mall, an entertainment center called Parky’s, featuring a go-kart racing track and axe-throwing, has been proposed for a former Moorestown Mall department store
immediately eclipsing Camden as South Jersey’s downtown and drawing customers from Philadelphia as well
It has been substantially renovated and expanded twice
It has weathered the consolidations and closings in the department store industry as well as dramatic changes in shopping culture
While some other Philly regional malls have withered or closed — and as PREIT has emerged from bankruptcy with new owners — the Cherry Hill Mall remains the company’s showcase property
with three department stores and 1.3 million square feet of space

The new store has arrived as Columbia Sportswear is trying to boost its finances
Columbia announced a 6% decline in net sales
for the first nine months of its fiscal year
It predicted a drop of approximately 2% in the current quarter
Net income for the nine-month period fell to $120.7 million
said warm weather has curbed demand for cold-weather products
but predicted gains from a growth strategy "to elevate the brand and attract younger and more active consumers."
Columbia Sportswear is the latest of several newcomers at the mall
opening shortly after the debut of jeweler Kendra Scott
the Alo yoga-wear chain and a Lacoste fashion shop

Columbia Sportswear has opened a new “brand store” in the Cherry Hill Mall which is one of only two in New Jersey and the only one in South Jersey. Columbia also has Factory Outlet stores at the Gloucester Premium Outlets and in the Fashion District Mall in Philadelphia
The new Columbia Sportswear brand store opened last week carrying innovative outerwear
footwear and accessories for outdoor enthusiasts of all levels
The store also includes men’s and women’s insulated winter jackets
hiking boots and beanies to keep you warm throughout the season OK
It’s a nicely designed store featuring a full outdoor adventure “vibe” and offering the full Columbia collection including the latest innovative technology
some of which you will not find in the factory stores
Omni-Heat is new technology designed to keep you extra warm with options such as Omi-Heat Arctic which mimics the fur of a polar bear and other Arctic animals
engineered to keep you warm in the coldest of conditions
The Omni-Heat Infinity technology is a lining which uses thermal reflective gold dots to reflect body heat

LesbiVeggies Relocating To Downtown Woodbury (Relocating from Audubon)
Shoppes at Gloucester Township (Blackwood) Construction – Tenants
The nine story tall One Cherry Hill office tower which is located adjacent to the popular Cherry Hill Mall
Construction fencing surrounds the building today and demolition workers are inside the building demolishing the interior aspects. The more impactful full building demolition is set to start after the important holiday shopping season
The building is located in the back of the mall… not connected to the mall
The office tower is positioned in the “L” that is formed by the two wings of the mall
At the very top of the office tower it still features the signature large lettering for “One Cherry Hill” and it’s logo depiction of two cherries… but soon that will all be gone
The office towner opened in 1968 with over 25 office tenants and approximately 10 other retailers in the lobby including a bakery
For over 50 years the building was home to hundreds of South Jersey workers who had the advantage of being just 40 feet from the mall entrance
who after work or for lunch had quick access to all of the mall’s stores and restaurants
The One Cherry Hill office building thrived for decades with dozens of tenants who provided gainful employment to hundreds of South Jersey residents
In recent years though the building has seemed somewhat quiet
At the beginning of September I was in the rear parking lot of the mall behind the office tower, covering the temporary installation of FUNBOX inflatable bounce park… and the one Cherry Hill office tower caught my attention
I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before but for about 14 years I worked for Yorkship Business Supply
who in the 1980s and 90s was South Jersey’s largest office products distributor with over 200 employees
And while working there I got to know likely every single office building in Camden and Gloucester counties
So absolutely as I was standing in the mall parking lot in early September
that One Cherry Hill office tower caught my eye “are there still people working there?”
My research led me to review Cherry Hill permits
and I found that last year a permit was issued to “decommission all three elevators” in the building
I’m not an engineer but it would seem kind of tough to operate a nine-story office building if you don’t have elevators
so that raised some flags for me. But I wanted to do more research
Then I noticed that last month additional permits were filed
with the latest permit very clearly saying “Interior Demolition – Preparing for building demolition”
That in itself is enough proof that One Cherry Hill office tower is coming down
but in my years of writing 42 freeway I’ve made many contacts in the construction industry… and several others confirmed the plans
I did stop in at the Cherry Hill Mall Management Offices today
and later in the afternoon received a call from their media contact who said that the mall and its owner (PREIT) had no comment at this time
Regarding future plans for the soon to be cleared space
Just my opinion but I don’t think owner PREIT would spend the money right now to tear the building down
unless they had something lined up to go in its place
That being said industry contacts have shared with me one likely possible candidate
but I need to wait for additional confirmation
The Cherry Hill Mall opened in 1961 as the first enclosed shopping center east of the Mississippi
The mall proved to be very popular and almost immediately had several additions
Opening with 74 shops and a Strawbridge and Clothier’s department store
a year later they added eighteen more stores and the Bamberger’s department store
Would you believe in 1964 a smaller professional wing with offices was opened as well as a 3,200sf ice skating rink?
does anyone else remember the little indoor children’s party area that had small kids rides?
This success of the early malls caught on in America and through the 1960s and 70s
enclosed shopping malls popped up all over country and were seen as the new “Town Center” for America’s communities
many projects were developed that also included residential and commercial office space
A 1966 article in the Courier-Post describes the plans for the one Cherry Hill office tower which would include 100,000 square feet of rentable space
Another local example of the multi-use development around mall centers was over in Voorhees where the Echelon Mall was developed by the same developer
The series of related projects included the mall
the County Library with community meeting spaces
Absolutely the Cherry Hill Mall is thriving and is likely one of the top performing malls in the country but we all realize that as a whole
the brick-and-mortar retail sector in America is significantly reduced from where we were say… 30 years ago
I can absolutely connect the time frame within the lifespan of my daughter because I remember telling coworkers in the mid-90s that I was buying her Christmas toys online from a brand new website called Amazon (who had partnered with Toys-R-Us). It was something that was just completely unheard of
and people thought I was risking my entire financial security by putting my credit card info into a website
And look where we are today with internet shopping
Now we are in the second wave of internet impacts
as I don’t think anyone realized how much the Internet and remote working capabilities would impact the commercial office sector
With a big boost from the pandemic’s need to “work from home”
many more companies have permanently shifted to a remote work environment… which is reducing the need for expensive office space
Moody’s Analytics recently announced that for the very first time the office vacancy rates in the top major metro areas was greater than 20%
Compare that to the financial boom year of 2007 when the vacancy rate was around 13%… And then with 2000 when it was under 10%
These changes have led to a significant amount of unused commercial office space in America
with considerable projects taking place to either repurpose the buildings for new uses or even demolish them
The large former headquarters for PHH Mortgage in Mt Laurel was approved to be demolished… for warehouses
And that eight story office building in Voorhees next to the Echelon Mall (Voorhees Town Center)? It is going through the approval process to become senior housing

Social media was alight with rumors of a shooting at the Cherry Hill Mall on Saturday after an altercation between juveniles caused panic
A mall representative said the rumors were unfounded
an individual falsely yelled "gun," causing shoppers to evacuate the area
"After a thorough review of events and surveillance
no evidence of a firearm was found," the spokesperson said
Facebook and Instagram have been circulating
incorrectly contributing the panic at the shopping center to an active shooter or gun threat
Videos posted of the incident showed a number of people running away from an area of the mall
members of the Cherry Hill Police Department responded to the incident and cleared the scene at the time
the mall announced that its parental escort policy would be in place the day after Christmas
requiring juveniles to be accompanied by a parent or guardian from 4 p.m
"Juveniles not acting responsibly will be escorted from the property and those engaging in criminal behavior will be arrested and prosecuted," a post from the Cherry Hill Police Department said
Last year, the Deptford Mall gained attention for its parental chaperone policy

If you've ever been to the Cherry Hill Mall you've definitely seen this building
located in the back parking lot of the mall
It's been around since the 70s and from a distance
you could always tell you were getting close to the mall parking lot when you would see the 9-story office building
It will soon be taken down for the new store and field to possibly be built at that location
According to the Courier Post, “In addition to the typical sporting goods merchandise
The space will also apparently be used for community/vendor events and sports clinics
If you're wondering when all this will be completed
I was just at the Cherry Hill Mall recently for the first time in a long time
It's always been a very popular mall and the day I was there was no different
It was very crowded and still has a lot of great stores and restaurants
and I’m hopeful this new store will be a success
the zoning board is expected to consider the application at their meeting this week

NJ — Local officials have approved plans to replace the longstanding office building on Cherry Hill Mall's lot with a sports megastore
The sporting goods retailer will feature a rock-climbing wall
batting cage simulator and other indoor recreation inside the two-floor store
It will also have an adjoining outdoor turf field
The store will replace One Cherry Hill — the nine-story office building in the mall lot
Cherry Hill's Zoning Board approved the development plans during Thursday's meeting
PREIT — Cherry Hill Mall's parent company — has not publicly revealed the store's name. But multiple news outlets have reported that Dick's House of Sport has been planned for the location
Dick's House of Sport is part of Dick's Sporting Goods
But each House of Sport is about twice as the normal locations and features recreational areas for testing out equipment and holding events
42Freeway first reported the plans to bring Dick's House of Sport to Cherry Hill Mall
It's unclear when One Cherry Hill will get demolished and when the new store might open
A spokesperson for PREIT told Patch that more information will be shared on a later date
Dick's Sporting Goods did not immediately respond to Patch's request for comment
The new store will have a footprint of 60,000 square feet
A synthetic surf field surrounded by a track will add 18,500 square feet
Customers will be able to test out their purchases in the outdoor area

One of New Jersey’s largest shopping malls is getting ready to welcome a slate of new tenants
located across the Delaware River from Philadelphia
has announced three apparel stores that will be coming to the 1.35 million-sq.-ft
and also shared new details on when a number of previously announced tenants will finally open their doors
Lacoste, Columbia Sportswear, and Mango have all signed leases at the center. Lacoste, known for polo shirts and casual wear, is expected to open this winter, with Columbia Sportswear projected to open before the holiday shopping season. Meanwhile, Spanish fashion brand Mango is expected to make its debut in summer of 2025
“We are excited to introduce these highly sought-after brands to Cherry Hill Mall,” said Paula Charles, first VP of leasing at PREIT
Cherry Hill Mall is positioned as a key destination for retailers entering or expanding in the region
This ongoing leasing momentum reflects our commitment to evolving with consumer preferences and maintaining our position as a premier shopping destination
We look forward to offering our shoppers an even more diverse and high-quality shopping experience.”

Previously announced store opening updates include the following retailers and restaurants
The owner of malls in Cherry Hill and Moorestown has sold a shopping center in suburban Philadelphia
PREIT said it transferred Exton Square Mall for $34.2 million to Abrams Realty
which emerged from bankruptcy under new management in April 2024
has been selling properties to reduce its debt and bolster its ailing finances

The company in 2023 shed Cumberland Mall in Vineland and its 50% interest in Gloucester Premium Outlets in Gloucester Township.

The Philadelphia-based firm has cited challenges from the trend toward e-commerce
rising interest rates and restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020
An announcement March 20 described Exton Square as an "underutiltzed mall" in West Whiteland Township
expects to develop the site "into a walkable
The property was not among PREIT's "core malls," which include its remaining South Jersey properties
it listed Cherry Hill Mall as its top-performing property
Fashion retailer Forever 21 is closing many stores across New Jersey and the nation
including locations in the Deptford and Cherry Hill Malls
Media outlets such as Pix 11 in New York are stating that 15 locations in New Jersey are set to close with that list including other South Jersey locations in Atlantic City and Hamilton Mall Mays Landing
Additionally there have been reports of the stores closings planned in the Fashion District in Philadelphia and the Franklin Mall… and very recently there have been reports of closing the Forever 21 in the powerhouse King of Prussia Mall
While I was in Deptford and saw the signage for myself that the location is closing
confirming the full list has been difficult for all media as Forever 21 has not published a press release regarding their plans nor an official list of store closings
Forever 21 was one time a retail powerhouse with a huge presence in American malls.
In September of 2019 during the pandemic they filed for bankruptcy protection
and were acquired a few months later by a company formed via a joint venture of Authentic Brands Group
mall owner Simon Property Group and real estate company Brookfield Property Partners
Lately they have been seen increased sales pressure from online retailers
with many industry experts noting that Chinese online discount retailers Shein and Temu as being very impactful
USA TODAY is reporting that Forever 21 is shutting down its Los Angeles headquarters
This is all part of an effort to reduce costs and optimize the store footprint… A similar statement to what Joann fabrics stores recently made before very soon after deciding to close all locations
But even in that USA Today article from just Friday even though they have spoken to representatives of Forever 21
the newspaper describes details on stores closing as information that is “trickling in”
So it seems that this point we really have no idea how many of the 540 Forever 21 locations are actually closing
or if it really is 15 New Jersey locations set to close
signs were clearly displayed announcing the store closing sales. Reports from others online such as TikTok video show similar closing signs have been in place for over a week also at the Cherry Hill and Hamilton Mall (Mays Landing) locations
It has been a tough first two months of 2025 for area retailers with several closings announced. In the Deptford retail area Party City, Joann, Shoe Carnival and now Forever 21 are closing
we reported that Boot Barn has signed on for The Court at Deptford
and I am hearing another retailer is close to taking over the final large space at that center
The large “Bed Bath and Beyond” has been closed a few short years
Recently a new real estate sign appeared at the property announcing a new development effort which is likely a remodel to meet the specs of newly signed retailer(s)

FUNBOX is the World’s Biggest Bounce Park and they have set up at the Cherry Hill Mall
Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday during that time frame, they highly recommend buying tickets in advance online as sessions regularly sellout
Located in the rear parking lot of the mall along Church Road (closest to the food court and JC Penney’s)… FUNBOX is a large
colorful and fun bounce house park featuring dozens of really amazing inflatable structures to explore
Honestly while I heard that this was coming to the area I really knew nothing about it until a few days ago when I found myself driving through the Cherry Hill Mall parking area (for the upcoming Kooma restaurant) and noticed the large colorful structures
From my drone photos (taken at a very safe distance from off to the side) It’s clear to see that this is an impressive array of fun and exciting bounce house structures
It seems like the park offers two different (equally sized) sections with the first half having self-contained individual inflatable fun houses
The fun really escalates in the second half where the ground is fully covered with connected bouncy inflatable fun structures.
Any of the individual segments alone would be incredibly impressive at any event
but having 10 or more in the same place and all connected for one long continuous bounce house fun
This is one of those adventures where after you bring the kids home
you know it’s going to be nap time for the kids… as well as Mom and Dad
And it’s not all just about bouncing at FUNBOX
as one of the signature attractions is a 23-foot high inflatable slide
Another unique adventure is the Mountain Challenge which is like a fun and inflatable “King of the Hill” attraction where you climb up the side of the sloped mountain
The chill zone offers a relaxing and colorful break from all the bouncy fun exit
Visitors can enjoy the massive bounce park in 80 minute sessions
Hours of operation are Fridays 3:00 to 7:00 PM

The dwindling restaurant chain has closed its eatery along Route 38 across from the Cherry Hill Mall. This shutdown of the decades-old eatery is the third Fridays to close in this area since 2021

CHERRY HILL — The day after Christmas
police released a statement informing the community about Cherry Hill Mall’s supervision policy involving minors
“The Cherry Hill Police Department and Cherry Hill Mall Management want everyone to have a safe shopping experience

Juveniles not acting responsibly will be escorted from the property and those engaging in criminal behavior will be arrested and prosecuted.”
The parental escort policy was implemented on Dec

NJ — IKEA is planting its flag in South Jersey
with a concept store planned for Cherry Hill
The furniture giant is bringing a "plan & order point" store to the Ellisburg Shopping Center
The concept stores are a fraction of the typical IKEA size
allowing customers to meet with staff to plan out purchases for delivery or scheduled pickups
Cherry Hill's store is slated to open this summer
IKEA has introduced the new format to various locations in recent years
Cherry Hill's will take up around 1,900 square feet
making it one of the smaller establishments in the shopping center
Customers will also be able to pick up online orders at the new location
the plan & order point stores don't sell food
So you'll still need to travel to South Philly for the meatballs
Although South Jersey doesn't have a traditional IKEA
Cherry Hill Mall has an IKEA Kitchen Planning Pop-Up Shop
where staff help customers design a custom kitchen
The pop-up, which opened in 2023
the Ellisburg Shopping Center store will not impact the pop-up shop
