MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The recent storms that took out power for nearly half of the Morgantown area have apparently led to representatives at Chestnut Ridge Park to cancel reservations scheduled for the upcoming weekend.
“The two cabins that were damaged, we’re not going to be able to rent them out this weekend,” said Hoban. “We’re going to provide refunds to those who have booked them, and we do have a good bit of reservations this weekend, but we are hoping, as long as everything goes according to schedule, we won’t have to cancel any other reservations.”
“The main thing is a lot of large trees are down and blocking roadways; they took down power lines; one of our cabins had a tree land directly on top of it, as I mentioned already; and another one had a tree land on the backside of it,” said Hoban. “With some damages that are yet to be fully assessed.”
“They say it’s going to be a month or more before we can reopen Klaer, and we’ve got to see how much damage is done to the roof and get some windows replaced, and other things at least,” said Hoban. “For Pine Cabin, I’m not sure we’ll be able to reopen; it might be done for.”
Chestnut Ridge Park intends to remain fully open despite the damage that took place during the strong Saturday storms. That includes continuing to operate the remaining five cabins and lodges that are regularly open during the spring and summer months. While refunds will be issued for both the Klaer Lodge and Pine Cabin for the duration of their closure, Hoban expects the rest of the park to recover and remain open for business.
“We are waiting for some of the higher-ups in the facilities and maintenance department to get up here and help us assess the damage,” said Hoban. “They’ll probably bring an excavator up and some other big tools that can help us get some of this stuff out of the way.”

Pa (WJAC) — Two local high school sisters are taking the wrestling world by storm
but on the national and international stage
Undefeated and now headed overseas to represent Team USA
In a sport traditionally dominated by boys
Violette Lasure and Juliet Alt are proving that they are not just keeping up
their bond is as strong as their takedowns
is right behind her at Chestnut Ridge with an impressive 37-4 record
Violette recently earned a spot on the U.S
national team and will wrestle in the Pan-American championships
with her eyes set on gold at the world championships in Greece this summer
It means so much because I get to go out of the country and get to see other countries and it's just really awesome experience to wrestle other people,” Violette says
Both girls found wrestling through their brother
as her very first match was a national tournament where she placed second
Juliet picked it up during the COVID shutdowns
She says what began as boredom turned into a state title
And Violette and Benton were always wrestling at home and practicing because there were no practices
‘well I got nothing better to do,’ so might as well try something new out,” Alt explained
The sisters credit each other for pushing to be better
saying the toughest part of competing at their level isn’t just the training
it’s the mental preparation and the discipline to maintain weight and focus
but eventually it got easier and the boys started to realize that we belonged in the room too and that we had a spot there,” Violette added
While they’re fierce competitors on the mat
Violette and Juliet are showing the world that girls not only belong in wrestling

Chestnut Ridge Park is beautiful. There are a ton of things to do there. But one simple change would make a huge difference
There are trails to hike. There are picnic shelters. There's even a disc golf course sprinkled in the trees and fields there. Chestnut Ridge Park is awesome. That should be established before anything else
we realized a small change could make it even better
Line more of the tennis courts for pickleball
there are 8 tennis courts in one section and then another 4 in the section next to it. They're really nice courts. However
We went last night to enjoy the perfect fall weather and play a little pickleball and unfortunately
there were people waiting in line in front of us
They say that pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the country and it's easy to see why. It's easy to learn. It's a good way to get a little exercise if you want to take it easy
it can get your heart pumping. It's started to get a reputation as an "old person" sport
but that doesn't seem to be the case with just about everyone I've seen playing since I started. Don't knock it until you've tried it
I understand that you wouldn't want to line every court for pickleball because that could cause a problem for the people who come to play tennis. But from what I saw last night
pickleball seems to be your more popular sport right now. You don't have to take the tennis courts away from them
but by simply adding lines to a couple more of the courts you could make more choices available

Five was the most significant and operative number Friday night as undefeated Bishop Guilfoyle Academy cruised to a 47-7 Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference mercy-rule victory over Chestnut Ridge at Mansion Park.
BG senior star Hamilton Gates scored five touchdowns — two rushing, two receiving and one on a fumble recovery and 55-yard return — and Chestnut Ridge turned the ball over five times, four on interceptions. Two of the turnovers directly produced BG touchdowns, while three others paved the way for three more scores in the game for the Marauders, who scored 27 points in the second quarter to build a 34-0 halftime lead.
“I thought that we played a pretty complete game,” said BG coach Justin Wheeler, whose Marauders improved to 8-0. “Our offense moved the ball, our defense created turnovers, and our special teams units played well, except for a couple unsuccessful point-after-touchdown plays.”
After Braden Reilly’s interception set up a 2-yard Gates touchdown run with 2:36 left in the first quarter, the Marauders blew the game open in the second quarter.
Defensive end Jake Kissell read a pass by Chestnut Ridge starting quarterback Cale Harrison perfectly, picked it off at the Ridge 40 and ran untouched to the end zone 9 seconds into the second period to give BG a 14-0 advantage.
“I thought that Jake’s pick-6 gave us a lot of energy and really kind of got us rolling,” Wheeler said.
Kissell, a junior, was in the right place at the right time, and made a big play.
“I was playing defensive end, I read their screen pass, the ball was thrown my way, and I took it to the house,” Jake Kissell said. “I’m glad that I could do it for my team.”
Following that play, BG immediately executed an onside kick and senior Nick McCloskey recovered it at the Ridge 45, setting up a six-play Marauders’ scoring drive that was capped off by senior quarterback Chase Kissell’s perfect 20-yard scoring pass to Gates in the left corner of the end zone.
On Ridge’s ensuing possession, Gates, playing defensive back, stripped a Ridge back of the football at the BG 45, and took the fumble recovery down the left side of the field for a touchdown with 7:28 left in the first half, giving the Marauders a 28-0 lead.
“Their running back was running the ball, our whole team had him held up, and I stripped the ball loose,” Gates said. “Although we definitely have room for improvement, we’re clicking on all cylinders as a team right now, with the postseason approaching.”
Ridge senior quarterback Cale Harrison left the game with an ankle injury while being tackled on the Lions’ next possession, and BG got the ball back and covered 51 yards, with Chase Kissell’s 25-yard pass to Gates setting up Gates’ 1-yard TD burst with 2:43 left in the first half.
The Marauders kicked the mercy rule into play on Chase Kissell’s 11-yard touchdown pass to Gates in the third quarter, following an interception by Tyson Lestochi.
Plays of the game: Two stood out, both on defense, and both in the second quarter, for BG. They were Jake Kissell’s interception return for a touchdown and Gates’ fumble recovery and touchdown run.
Unsung heroes: BG’s first-team defense kept Ridge off the scoreboard and came up with five turnovers, all of which factored in touchdowns.
Most vital statistics: Ridge turned the ball over five times while BG did not commit a single turnover. BG racked up 303 yards in total offense — 156 through the air and 147 on the ground — while limiting Ridge to a total of just 111 yards.
Wheeler on Gates’ performance: “He gets (touchdowns) offensively and defensively. He’s a pretty special player.”
Chestnut Ridge coach Max Shoemaker: “It’s kind of obvious what the storyline was tonight — with four picks and a fumble, and a minus-five turnover ratio, you’re not going to win any games. Hats off to BG. They’re an outstanding team with athletes that we couldn’t match up with — athletes that a lot of teams cannot match up with — and those athletes accounted for several big plays tonight.”
Notable: Carolyn Maguda was crowned BG’s homecoming queen, while football player Isaac Yeskey was named BG’s homecoming king … Jake Kissell, backing up his brother Chase at quarterback in the fourth quarter, ran 8 yards for the Marauders’ final touchdown following a McCloskey interception … Ridge averted a shutout on Owen Claycomb’s 6-yard touchdown run with 6:31 left in the game against BG’s defensive reserves.
Records: Chestnut Ridge (4-4); Bishop Guilfoyle (8-0).
Next week: Bishop Guilfoyle travels to Philipsburg-Osceola; Chestnut Ridge hosts Richland.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WKBW) — After being lost for four hours in Orchard Park, the Erie County Sheriff's Office says deputies were able to rescue three hikers early Saturday morning.
They first became aware that the hikers were lost at around 3:30 a.m. One hiker called and told dispatchers he only had 2% battery on his phone and the other two hikers did not have their phones.
“The teamwork demonstrated by our dispatch and patrol units this morning was exemplary,” said Sheriff John Garcia. “With time a factor, they worked quickly, efficiently and diligently to assist these three individuals.”

A Spring Valley man was convicted in the armed home invasion robbery of a marijuana dealer in Chestnut Ridge, during which a young man visiting the house was beaten, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced.
A federal jury in U.S. District Court in White Plains on Wednesday found 34-year-old Thierry "Gutta" Antoine guilty of robbery, conspiracy and the use of a firearm in a violent crime following a five-day trial.
According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, Antoine and five others went to the home of the marijuana dealer on Dec. 16, 2019, with a gun, a small bat and a knife. When they encountered a young man there who was visiting a friend, they beat, him, put a gun in his mouth so hard that it broke one of his teeth, and tied him up, before breaking in and stealing cash, marijuana, clothes and shoes.
Antoine and Carlens Paul were indicted in the case last year. Paul pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery in March and is awaiting sentencing, according to court records.
Antoine faces a minimum of five years and a maximum of life in prison on the firearm charge. That would run consecutively to any sentence he receives on the other charges, which each carry a maximum prison term of 20 years.
U.S. District Judge Nelson Roman scheduled sentencing for April 4, 2025.

An office building in the affluent suburb of Woodcliff Lake sold this week for $9.8 million — a nearly 19% increase over what it sold for 10 years ago — potentially bucking the trend of companies giving up suburban office space for more urban parts of the country
which oversaw the sale of the property at 470 Chestnut Ridge Road
touted the site’s proximity to a nearby Whole Foods store
as well as building upgrades in the lobby and common area
The property and its 53,730-square-foot building are leased entirely to engineering and construction firm Kiewit for its regional Northeast headquarters
Kiewit did not respond to several emails on Tuesday seeking comment
The property was sold to an investment firm based in Monsey
the building sold for $8.25 million to Keystone Property Group
which is based in Morristown with a Pennsylvania headquarters

“470 Chestnut’s location in one of New Jersey’s premier towns coupled with Kiewit’s recent upgrades to the lobby
common areas and building systems made this an attractive opportunity for the buyer,” CBRE Vice Chairman Jeff Bunne said in a statement
Suburban office complexes and suburban-based corporate headquarters have become less common amid work-from-home trends coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic
more businesses have been flocking to urban centers like Hoboken and Jersey City
which sit across the Hudson River from Manhattan
when companies fled cities for suburban areas
including stretches of Bergen County and the Interstates 80 and 287 corridors in Morris County
But the recent past has seen accounting giant Deloitte and drugmaker Sanofi moving into smaller office space in Morristown, the largest city in Morris County, along with the Valley National bank headquarters, in what’s known as the M Station project
And former office complexes across North Jersey are being converted into warehouses or a combination of housing and retail
Still, some corporate headquarters are sticking it out in suburban offices. Electronics giant Samsung will move its North American headquarters from Ridgefield Park, off the New Jersey Turnpike, to Englewood Cliffs next summer
Party City based its headquarters in Woodcliff Lake since a tax break announcement with the state in 2021. Financial technology company Fiserv recently moved 2,000 employees to a headquarters in Berkeley Heights
And earlier this year, the maker of Tylenol, Listerine, Neutrogena, Band-Aids and Benadryl announced plans for a global headquarters in suburban New Jersey with over 3,000 scientists and other employees over the next few years
Kenvue — a Johnson & Johnson spinoff — is moving its Neutrogena employees from California to Summit in 2025
It will occupy a sprawling 290,000-square-foot headquarters and research and development facility on a 46-acre campus formerly occupied by the pharmaceutical company Celgene
