Tommy Williams is known around Northern Nevada as one of the state's top athletes with college options in football and basketball.
After originally committing to Nevada football to walk-on as a quarterback, Williams had a change of heart and decided basketball was his future. And he told NSN on Friday he's headed to Division II school Chico State.
The three-sport athlete led Incline teams to state title games in football and basketball with the Highlanders claiming the honor on the hardwood for the first time since 2019. Williams also solidified his name in Incline and state history, becoming the lone Highlander to surpass 2,000 career points. He ranks first in state history in career steals and top 10 for a multiple other categories.
Williams said his decision stemmed from basketball being his stronger passion.
Nevada head coach Jeff Choate spoke glowingly about Williams during Nevada's signing day in February, saying the Wolf Pack became interested in him after a local high school recruiting camp, which ultimately put the Incline-star on the map.
"He's a winner," Choate said. "Winners win, man. That's what you want. You want guys like that in your program. He's got that infectious personality. If you're around him, you want to be around him. He's just a fantastic person who happens to be a tremendous athlete. I think he's a guy that's got a big ceiling here."
William's decision to pursue basketball comes after months after winning a state championship after a runner-up finish during his junior year.
"I had a lot of awesome opportunities come up for basketball over the past couple months that I just felt wanted," Williams said. "I felt like I could go make an impact there. So really, like at any level, I'm just happy to play basketball. I decided that I need to stop worrying about what other people think and just kind of do what makes me happy."
The support for Williams continued after his commitment to Nevada but his passion for basketball reigned supreme after being named the MVP of the North's All-Star game in back-to-back years.
Williams rounded out his high school career playing baseball this season with the Highlanders and will continue his basketball journey in California as a Wildcat.
Head coach Tim Kelly, who predicted Williams would bring Incline a state title when he was just 6 years old, said looking to get to as many games as he can to support his player.
You can watch our full interview with Tommy Williams below.

This story is one in a series spotlighting nine exceptional faculty members who were recognized with 2024–25 Outstanding Faculty Awards
selected by the University’s Faculty Recognition and Support Committee
These awards—among the highest honors at Chico State—celebrate faculty excellence in the categories of Outstanding Professor
Lecturer in Bringing the Profession to the Classroom
As a professor in the Child Development Department and research associate at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health
Her passion for the healthy development of children
“Relationships are the key to almost everything I do,” Hart says
“I’m lucky enough to be in a position where I can really build relationships with my students and my colleagues
and that brings me to work every day.”
Hart played a critical role in post-Camp Fire trauma response and continues to work closely with organizations like First 5 Butte County and the Juvenile Justice Commission to support vulnerable children throughout the region
service is at the heart of her work—on campus and beyond.
She has published 31 peer-reviewed articles (with two more under review)
along with 28 non-peer-reviewed articles and editorials
she has presented 51 times at state or national conferences and delivered 17 invited seminars on topics ranging from emotional well-being and crisis prevention to early-onset mood and eating disorders
as well as the lasting effects of early adversity on development and parenting
both in my research and in the community,” said Hart
Hart has brought that same passion and hands-on experience to Chico State
preparing students to become compassionate professionals ready to serve their communities
holding a master’s degree in the field from Sacramento State and a PhD from UC Santa Barbara.
“I get energy from our students—they truly are so fun and funny
“The world can be difficult—but when we are connected to others and can find enjoyment and validation even in the hard moments
we find the strength to keep working so hard,” she said.
Shelley Hart elevates the voices of her students and the community—proving that “Hart” is far more than just her name.
What inspired your passion for child development
Was there a particular moment or experience that lit the spark?
I was completely enthralled by watching the amazing things that happened as she experienced the world
It was fascinating to imagine seeing the world through her eyes.
slow-to-warm child who tended to sit back and observe rather than dive into new experiences
I didn’t fully enjoy the wonder of childhood when I was young—but through my daughter
Watching her grow allowed me to truly savor and appreciate those early experiences in a way I hadn’t before.
my PhD is technically in psychology rather than child development
and when I joined the child development faculty
I was thrilled to find a place where I could continue my research
and service—with flexibility and strong encouragement to bring my professional experiences into my coursework.
I’ve come to deeply appreciate both the similarities and differences between my training and that of my colleagues in child development
I have always been a developmentalist—someone who is truly focused on the context of growth and development
I really found “my people,” both in my colleagues and my students.
You’ve worked closely with some incredible organizations
Is there a moment from that community work that really stuck with you or changed how you see your role?
I had the opportunity to join a Butte County Office of Education team developing a Center for Resilience
housed in the old county courthouse near Chico Junior High
focused on breaking down silos between agencies and creating services that truly centered children and families
with the goal of improving access to resources.
Although the vision hasn’t fully materialized
many of the ideas we developed still influence community work today
I built strong relationships with people dedicated to making a difference
and those connections have been invaluable both professionally and personally.
We leaned on each other during the Camp Fire—when my parents
those connections aren’t just important—they’re essential.
If you could assign everyone in the world one book to read about emotional well-being
I would recommend Born for Love: Why Empathy is Essential—and Endangered by Bruce Perry and Maia Szalavitz
While it’s not strictly a “well-being” book
Perry and Szalavitz are perhaps best known for The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog
which is an amazing book that I assign in my Risk and Resilience course (CHLD 321—everyone should take it!)
using compelling case studies to explain brain development and behavior
but it places a deeper emphasis on the essential role of relationships.
The book speaks to a broader audience about the importance of empathy
especially as we move further into a technological world that can leave people feeling more disconnected
As rates of mental health challenges continue to rise
Born for Love reminds us why understanding
and connection are critical to emotional well-being.

3 RWR/Parts Plus/Latus Motors Harley-Davidson XG750R) 2025 Progressive American Flat Track season
has quickly transformed from a feel-good story to an epic tale of domination as he stormed to a third consecutive convincing Mission AFT SuperTwins victory in Saturday’s night’s Silver Dollar Short Track
even amidst the transformation of the Harley-Davidson XG750R from a winless racebike to a week-in
the feel-good story behind it remains; Bauman and wife
made the announcement that they are expecting their first child earlier this morning at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico
That news didn’t inspire any of his rivals to take it easy on him in the evening
32 Estenson Racing Yamaha MT-07 DT) and the emerging James Ott (No
19 G&G Racing Yamaha MT-07) took the early initiative in the premier-class Main.
Those two waged a contest of contrasting lines and styles aboard their respective Yamahas
with Daniels locked down low and Ott railing up high as they shook free from the pack
Ott’s bolder approach eventually gave him the upper hand
as he assumed the lead some three minutes into the eight-minute and two-lap affair
Daniels’ subsequent experiments with a higher line only resulted in him getting swallowed up by a charging Bauman
who would also go on to overwhelm Ott less than a minute later.
67 Rackley Racing/Bob Lanphere’s BMC Racing KTM 790 Duke) was the next to power up the outside of Daniels
The Estenson Racing star regrouped and responded
and their fight saw them track Ott back down and flow past him to turn their scrap into one for second.
Fisher seemed relatively safe in that position late
but one last charge from Daniels made it interesting – to the tune of a 0.061-second differential at the flag
the Rackley Racing rider managed to hold on to earn his best result of the year after earlier finishing third at Daytona
While Daniels upped his podium streak to 18
he also saw his championship deficit expand as Bauman powered on to stack a third successive victory on his pair of opening week seconds
the Rick Ware Racing pilot now leads by ten points (107-97) with five races down and 11 to go.
Asked to explain his seeming return to peak Grand National Champion form
“Getting back with Dave (Zanotti) and Michelle (Disalvo)
and Rick Ware Racing this opportunity… Look
I know how incredible Dallas is and all of these guys are
I spent the last two years on the downer a little bit; we had a couple wins
“I’m going to ride this high for a little while
and I know what it feels like to not be in this position
And to announce that we’re having our first child this morning…
Thank you so much to my whole team for everything
and I’m not going to take it for granted
The fast-starting Ott lost one additional position – that to fourth-place finisher Jarod VanDerKooi (No
20 Fastrack Racing/Wally Brown Racing KTM 790 Duke) – to close out the race’s top five
44 Mission Roof Systems Harley-Davidson XG750R) just another 0.180 seconds in arrears at the stripe.
62 Memphis Shades/Vinson Construction Suzuki GSX-8S) continued to demonstrate the promise of his developing Suzuki platform in seventh while Max Whale (No
18 Moto Anatomy X Powered by Royal Enfield 650)
14 Schaefer’s Motorsport KTM 790 Duke) and Nick Armstrong (No
160 Competitive Racing Frames Yamaha MT-07) rounded out the top ten just behind.
288 Old Oak Ranch/Roof Systems KTM 450 SX-F) became just the fourth rider in AFT Singles presented by KICKER history to win in his debut
the big question coming into this weekend was what he might possibly do for an encore at Silver Dollar Speedway
The answer was emphatic: Tadman became the first to ever immediately back up that debut victory with another triumphant performance.
his unprecedented feat was even more impressive in action than the record books will ever show
Tadman isn’t just two for two in AFT Singles Main Events
he’s six for six in Progressive AFT races of any type
standing undefeated following a second consecutive event in which he swept the heat
he did so in loose style and breakaway fashion
rendering the competition one for runner-up honors less than a minute into Saturday’s Main.
Tadman admitted to having exploited something of a home track advantage in Ventura
There was none this time around at what was an unfamiliar circuit and surface to him
I’ve never been here and don’t really ride these types of tracks much
But I was just trying to get used to it and adapt to the size of the track and the dirt
And I was able to pull off a good win.”
While Tadman again commanded the spotlight
the six-rider battle for second behind him was hugely entertaining as well
Once it became evident this was another one-rider race for victory
21 American Honda/Mission Foods CRF450R) defended second position vigorously with Australian Tom Drane (No
59 Estenson Racing Yamaha YZ450F) initially in pursuit
24 Vinson Construction/Reel Medics Yamaha YZ450F) slung his way around the high line and into the catbird seat
even displacing Brunner in second for a brief spell.
Once Brunner re-established himself in second
Drane slotted back up to third and the two stayed in that order to the checkered flag
The runner-up was Brunner’s first podium since returning to both the AFT Singles category and the American Honda-backed Turner Racing outfit.
Despite finding himself in the midst of his longest winless streak since going seven races before earning his first-career AFT Singles victory
Drane also finds himself even more solidly in control of the points race with finishes of 2-3-2-4-3 to kick off his ‘25 campaign.
Today’s third edged him three points further ahead of rival Chase Saathoff (No
who finished in fifth just behind Bauer.
Ventura podium finisher Tarren Santero (No
75 Mission Roof Systems Honda CRF450R) came home sixth
despite finishing closer to Brunner on track than Brunner did to Tadman
with Brunner still within striking distance at 70
followed by the night’s seventh-place finisher
26 FRA Trust/ATV’s and More Yamaha YZ450F) (52)
who stands side-by-side with three-time class king Kody Kopp (No
1 Bob Lanphere/KTM/Fastrack Racing KTM 450 SX-F)
who similarly boasts 46 points for going two-for-two in ‘25

LIVE UPDATESChico State's Beta Theta Pi alumni reunite
celebrate legacy and future return in 2025by Hannah Gutierrez
— Alumni of Chico State's former Beta Theta Pi fraternity gathered at their former home
this was our house for a year and it was amazing
Everyday you’d come home and there was 20 of us in this house
and there was always something to do," said Todd Chronert
More than 525 members participated in annual philanthropic events
held positions within the Associated Students Student Government
served as captains and athletes on Chico State's sports teams
alumni tell KRCR their favorite memories of their time in the fraternity have been the relationships they've developed with one another
Brothers also reflected on the lessons they learned while in the fraternity
the fraternity is set to make its return to campus in the fall of 2025 with its first pledge class since disbandment
Renowned for fostering 'Men of Principle,' the fraternity is committed to community service and campus stewardship
The Betas eagerly anticipate future reunion events and look forward to witnessing the successes of the new classes to come, while fostering the pillars the fraternity was built upon: 'mutual assistance, intellectual growth, trust, responsible conduct, and integrity.'
“It’s going to be fun to see the process of the torch passing to the next generation," Scott Shaughnessy concluded
Members from the national Beta Theta Pi organization will work directly alongside the new class through the fall semester to guide them along before taking a step back and letting members 'run the show' in the spring of 2026

From left: Oziel Magana, Josie Ensley, Jess Lopez, Garrett Duarte, and Ellen Falltrick are among the MBA students who passed the CAPM exam.
In December 2018, seven MBA students from California State University, Chico, enrolled in the MGMT 644 ("Seminar in Project Management") course and subsequently took the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) certification exam. They achieved a 100% pass rate, significantly surpassing the national average of 61%.
The CAPM certification is a valuable credential that distinguishes professionals in the job market, enhancing credibility and effectiveness when working with project teams. It is particularly beneficial for those with less project management experience, as it demonstrates a solid understanding of project management fundamentals.
Chico State's MBA program offers a Project Management option that prepares students for both the CAPM and Project Management Professional (PMP) certification exams. This option is especially attractive to students from engineering and construction management backgrounds, as both certifications are recognized for their value and potential to increase earning potential.
The success of Chico State's MBA students in achieving a 100% pass rate on the CAPM exam underscores the program's quality and the dedication of its faculty and students. Such certifications not only open doors to increased job opportunities but also equip graduates with the skills to lead projects that meet organizational goals effectively.

Budget Planning 2025–26As our campus faces a projected $32M structural deficit for the next academic year
we want to share an overview of our comprehensive and evolving plan to address these fiscal challenges
ensuring transparency with our campus community and inviting continued collaboration to meet our budget needs while continuing to serve our students
our projected $32M deficit reflects more than 10 percent of our annual operating budget and is comprised of:
These impacts create a $39.2M deficit that would be offset by a projected $7M tuition revenue increase— based on a 6% tuition increase and 2% increase in full-time equivalent status student numbers
This results in a combined projected $32M deficit
In the 2024–25 budget cycle, the University utilized a collaborative shared governance budget process involving education and planning sessions with the University Budget Committee (UBC) and regular communications with campus that culminated in a multi-year plan for the University budget
Recognizing a structural deficit going into 2024–25
the University Budget Committee recommended a plan to achieve budget reductions over three academic years
Our University’s reserves have been and will continue to be utilized to methodically and strategically achieve reductions to reduce negative impacts to the greatest extent possible
This approach also allowed division vice presidents time and autonomy to plan reductions in the most efficient ways for their individual areas
We acknowledge this is incredibly difficult
We’re grateful to fiscal prudence in prior years that has built our reserves in a way that we can address this through a phased approach
it is essential to align our operations in accordance with our financial resources
What follows is a four-part plan for achieving a permanent $32M reduction in recurring expenditures
This deficit is based on projections as of January 2025 for where we will be with enrollment and budget in 2025–26
As we work to address these changes together
we will use an iterative process incorporating the University Budget Committee with continuous and recursive feedback loops informing each successive step of the plan
the University Budget Committee presented its recommendation to President Steve Perez: A three-year plan to eliminate the projected potential $32M deficit by reducing allocations by $12.8M in 2025–26 and in 2026–27
This reflects a 40%-40%-20% allocation of the deficit over three years
with the recommendation to follow the percentages regardless of the deficit dollar amount
We remain committed to transparency with the campus community
The University Budget Committee will hold a forum on Monday
where the University Budget Committee's recommendation will be discussed
