consumers an unforgettable high may profit from a continued ban on recreational marijuana The Hemp Spot and Chillum Mushroom & Hemp Dispensary all expanded in the last year More than 9,500 Florida shops from gas station convenience stores to smoke shops are licensed to sell marijuana-like products derived from hemp plants Others purchased by reporters were revealed to contain harmful levels of mold and pesticides the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Safety has uncovered more than a million hemp products on store shelves that violated state law hemp shops would have faced overwhelming corporate competition Florida’s massive medical marijuana companies which abide by strict product safety regulations would have been able to sell pot to consumers without requiring a medical card The amendment “gave all the control to huge companies,” said Micky Morrison The hemp industry lobbied fiercely against Amendment 3, alleging that it would create a corporate monopoly among the 28 companies already licensed to sell medical marijuana in the state a partnership between “strange bedfellows,” cannabis attorney Zack Kobrin said “It was less to do with hemp and more how to kill Amendment 3,” he said But business owners wonder how long the freewheeling industry will escape federal or state regulations that could threaten their livelihoods And health experts wonder about consequences for consumers who can easily purchase marijuana-like products — without the same safety regulations imposed on medical marijuana companies Consumers looking for a marijuana-like “high” in Florida have two options seek a medical card if they have a qualifying condition — think cancer post-traumatic stress disorder or comparable ailments These cards allow consumers to shop at licensed marijuana dispensaries like Trulieve and Surterra consumers can walk into a smoke shop and find joints and edibles that contain similar intoxicating chemicals derived from hemp plants Pete 420 have capitalized on that easy access declaring “no medical card needed” on storefronts So what’s the distinction between hemp and marijuana must contain less than 0.3% of the specific intoxicating substance rich in marijuana plants — delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol Any higher percentage makes it a marijuana plant Both hemp and marijuana are cannabis plants Delta-9 THC isn’t the only chemical hemp producers can harvest and replicate to create intoxicating products Popular variants like delta-8 and delta-10 THC — considered less potent but still psychoactive — are legal in larger concentrations A state bill would have banned the sale of delta-8 THC But DeSantis vetoed that bill earlier this year arguing it would devastate the thousands of small businesses that sell those products — and cementing his alliance with the hemp industry Hemp businesses fear that a repeat of this year’s legislation could reemerge next year The hemp industry has aggressively organized, hiring influential lobbyists like Republican Party of Florida Executive Director Bill Helmich his advisers are partial to hemp’s interests “The hemp industry realized if they don’t organize Republican state legislators will also likely wait for the White House and Congress to weigh in on hemp’s legality nationwide Congress is poised next year to update the farm bill The possibility of federal regulations has owners like Morrison and Jordan Meservey of Tampa Bay Hemp Co “A (restrictive) federal law would effectively shut down anything,” Morrison said Florida’s medical marijuana laws exclude all but the largest operators That’s because medical marijuana companies must grow An application to obtain a license already costs $146,000. And the state has so far distributed only 28 licenses — soon to be 50 — to companies with the cash to operate Florida’s rules favoring large operations likely would have remained founder of the Medical Marijuana Business Association of Florida But the Legislature could have changed the laws to allow small businesses to enter the marketplace The Trulieve-sponsored amendment that failed on this year’s ballot had to be narrow to pass state Supreme Court review It couldn’t have added opportunities for small businesses even if its authors wanted to But the message that Amendment 3 was a cash grab by the state’s largest medical marijuana vendor at the expense of small businesses resonated with voters like Carlos Hermida’s Chillum Mushroom & Hemp Dispensary are already shifting from exclusively selling knockoff pot He thinks he could have remained afloat with the sales of other products A jar of Hillbilly Mushrooms — a legal variety of magic mushroom that does not contain psilocybin — is displayed at Chillum Mushroom & Hemp Dispensary in St Selling a variety of products could help shops like Carlos Hermida's recover from future bans on substances like THC CLIFFORD | Times ]Morrison thinks Amendment 3 could have been fatal for her business “We’d be lucky to still be in business a year from now Medical marijuana companies abide by strict product safety regulations that help protect consumers and limit improper access a marijuana researcher at the University of Florida Product labels must include detailed testing information and a recommended dosage By contrast, hemp products are required to display a certificate of analysis which includes independent lab test results and confirmation that the product does not contain contaminants like mold or pesticides. The Times/Herald investigation found that the labels provided for hemp products were inaccurate in shops across the state. Few large-scale studies have explored how chemicals that act as alternatives to marijuana, like delta-8 THC, affect the body, Goodin said. “It’s hard to provide guidance to the general public if we just don’t know,” she said. Think of it as a small, simplistic gateway into the wide and weedy world of cannabis gear. On that front, make sure you're entering the game with the right knowledge (We got you.) and the best recs (Believe us: We got you.) Without further ado, the best one-hitters that really make that single puff count. This iridescent twisted glass one-hitter by Cannastyle—which they refer to as both a one-hitter and chillum on their website (we explain more down below)—has a satisfying texture in the hand and a glossy borosilicate glass sheen that’s irresistible to some people and most crows. I found the Cannastyle one-hitter to be a good visual fit with my colorful collection of modern cannabis accessories so it'll be sticking around for sure. Stoneware has a quiet class that House of Puff has captured well in their four-inch one-hitter, available in nine colors. It’s been treated with a food-safe glaze but should still be hand washed only. Its slightly longer length was a conscious design choice to cool the smoke so it doesn't burn your lips, but it's still compact enough to tote around easily and discreetly. Pack it, light it, tap it out, and store it away for next time. Get lit with one of the most attainable items from Weedie Parker, Edie Parker’s line of cannabis accessories. This birthday candle-shaped one-hitter. The brand makes a ton of great pipes and fun weed accessories, but there's something funny about carrying around a candle that's actually a pipe. It’s crafted from 100% borosilicate glass, is just over five inches long and comes in a few colors in case you actually want to stick this in a birthday cake. Jaunt’s one-hitter comes with a waxed leather sleeve for safely and easily carrying the pipe wherever you need. Aside from the travel accessory, the Stem is a great pipe, because of its longer length (it's five inches), was ingeniously designed with a flat mouthpiece so that it won't roll around when you put it down, and has a matte finish so that it's grippy and won't easily slip out of your hands when in use. This matte silver one-hitter is made from aircraft-grade alloy that is very sturdy making this an appropriate unit to accidentally spill onto a sidewalk It comes with a silicone end cap to keep in the smell its bowl is larger than comparable one-hitters which means you can get around four to six draws compared to just a couple The terms “chillum” and “one-hitter” are sometimes used interchangeably A chillum is a traditional smoking pipe originating from India sometimes resulting in more of a conical or “bat” shape that’s wider at one end and allowing for more than one or two inhales smoking device designed for single-use sessions They’re usually smaller and more uniform in width than chillums and made from materials like metal or glass Some models can be used with carrying and loading accessories called “dugouts,” which have space for the one-hitter to tuck into as well as a spot to store and then load your ground flower Chillums also require a certain level of dexterity to use in the traditional sense which involves cupping the hands together to form a sort of palm pipe and then inserting the lit chillum vertically in between the ring and pinkie finger Because one-hitters are so simple in design with your mouth inhaling from one end and the weed filling the other yours probably isn’t going to come with a manual when you buy it pack it tightly into the tip or bowl of the device The trick is to get the grind and pack density just right The grind should be fine enough to let the air through but coarse enough not to get sucked down into the pipe And the bowl should be packed tight enough to not spill out when smoked horizontally but loose enough to draw the flame through You’ve been warned: Get this wrong and risk tasting your weed or its ash in the literal sense and a crowded market makes it easy to get lost in the weeds when shopping for one the ones we knew were the most popular with potheads and evaluated them based on the smoothness of the pulls The ones were didn't personally test were vetted based on other users' reviews and their popularity amongst the hobbyist community The Best Jeans for Men Under $100 The Best White Sneakers for Men Will Really Tie Your Wardrobe Together The Best Hoodies for Men Look As Good As They Feel The Best T-Shirts For Men The Best Men's Swim Trunks Are the Only Shorts You Really Need Get important news about your town as it happens Get the top stories from across our network Are you sure you want to unsubscribe from daily updates Two teens have been charged in connection to the fatal midday shooting of a 19-year-old Chillum man in Prince George's County earlier this year officers were called to the 500 block of Chillum Road where they found Carlos Hernandez-Ortiz suffering from multiple gunshot wounds where he was later pronounced dead from his injuries According to a GoFundMe campaign set up by his brother following Hernandez-Ortiz's death "he was innocently shot from bullets that were intended for someone else."  the Prince George's County Police Department announced that two 17 year olds - one from Hyattsville and one from Arlington - have been charged in connection to the shooting it is believed that the shooting was part of an ongoing dispute among teens and the shooters were familiar with Hernandez-Ortiz Both are being charged as adults with first- and second-degree murder Want breaking news in the DMV as it happens, or want to contribute? Hermida says the strict laws in the cannabis industry can make it a very long and expensive process to obtain the necessary licenses and pay for the costly operational costs. For this reason he decided to open Chillum Glass Gallery and CBD Dispensary, in historic Ybor City, to help companies desiring to get into the cannabis industry by distributing their products and educate people on the benefits of cannabidiol or CBD. Although cannabidiol is present in the cannabis plant, it is not cannabis. It is derived from the industrial hemp plant and lacks tetrahydrocannabinol, better known as THC, which is the component of marijuana that gets people high. In addition, CBD is legal in all 50 states, it offers many of the same medical and therapeutic benefits that the cannabis plant can, it relieves stress and anxiety, increases focus, but dispensers don't have to follow some of the strict regulatory guidelines and patients do not need a medical identification card. CBD Chillum Glass Gallery and CBD Dispensary distributes products from Florida-based companies such as Provida and Mindful Medicinals such as hemp powder, hemp joints, hemp blunts, coffee, tea, cough syrup, lotions, dog treats and more. The glass gallery side displays functional glass art from local artists, which means the hemp flower can be placed in the glass and smoked. "Chillum Glass Gallery and CBD Dispensary is a celebration of alternative culture," said Hermida in a press release. "We want people to understand this is art, this is culture." Art from the glass gallery ranges anywhere from $1 to $800 and products from the dispensary can range anywhere from $4 to $200. Chillum held its grand opening Friday (June 29). The dispensary operates from 12 to 11 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 12 p.m. to 1 a.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, and from 12 p.m. to 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and is located at 1717 E 7th Ave in Ybor City.
