“Southwest Virginia has always been a rail area for sure,” said Karina Romero with the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority. A town with a rich railroad history, preliminary construction is currently underway at the old Cambria train station as crews prepare to start work in the coming weeks. “Plans are moving forward, everything is on schedule, and we are thrilled to bring passenger rail service back to the New River Valley for the first time since 1979,” Romero said. Have the day's biggest stories arrive in your inbox every day at 8 p.m. She said people can expect crews out soon, and there is a lot of work to do to bring everything up to standard. “We definitely have to have a platform for safe boarding and unloading, so that’s definitely a priority, along with the track work, the access road so people can actually get to the platform, and then some signaling,” Romero explained. Two local store owners directly across from the future train said they have been keeping a close eye on any updates regarding the train station. “We’ve been paying a lot of attention to it; we’re really excited for it,” said Doug Ashworth, owner of Electrical Supply. “I think it’ll impact the businesses down here just bringing awareness to the community of Cambria withinside Christiansburg,” said Heather Vaughn, co-owner of Cambria Antiques. Ashworth expressed his anticipation for how the new service will affect business. “I don’t think it is going to hurt business,” he said. Vaughn added they believe this will be beneficial for the entire area and local businesses. “I think that’s the hope for all the small businesses down here,” she said. Romero said in the first year the station is open, they are expecting around 40,000 passengers. Copyright 2025 by WSLS 10 - All rights reserved. It was just a good time to be outside and be with the hometown of Christiansburg.” However, in 2024, longtime owner Peggy Beasley passed away, leaving the future of the drive-in uncertain. Now, it’s up for sale. For many folks, they remember going to the Starlite Drive-In throughout their lives. Have the day's biggest stories arrive in your inbox every day at 8 p.m. “Lots of good memories,” said Debbie Wagenbremmer, a Floyd resident. “Waiting in line was fun because you got a car full of family.” “I took my kids there, my grandkids,” said Michael Barbour, a Christiansburg resident. “It’s just a shame what’s happening now.” They said the drive-in has been associated with Christiansburg for decades, and they hope there is a way to keep it going with new owners. “I would love to see it stay,” said Wall. “Maybe a local person is interested in buying it and trying to keep it going,” said Wagenbremmer “I drive by it every day to go to my house, and my wife and I talk about it and say, ‘Wow, what’s next?’” said Barbour Realtor for the drive-in theater, James Craighead said he believes this is a significant opportunity for someone to preserve a local staple. “It’s obviously a fully functioning theater, but it’s also five acres as well, so there is a lot of opportunity to turn the next page in the chapter for whoever wants to take this on,” Craighead said. But no matter who it was, they all hope someone buys the Starlite Drive-In and continues its legacy here in Christiansburg. CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – More than a hundred people gathered at the historic Cambria site Wednesday to witness the groundbreaking ceremony for Montgomery County’s new Amtrak station, marking a significant milestone in Virginia’s passenger rail expansion. The project, which has been under discussion for over a decade, will refurbish and modernize the Cambria train station, with passenger service expected to begin in 2027. “This is a dream that is in progress still that began decades ago,” said Virginia Senator Tim Kaine. “I have been very proud as senator to battle for Amtrak funding to get us to Roanoke and then funding for this particular project to help find the right site for a passenger station here in Christiansburg.” Governor Glenn Youngkin joined local and state officials at the groundbreaking, emphasizing the project’s significance for regional connectivity. “Folks from the greater Montgomery County, Christiansburg, can in fact get real access to the rest of the east coast without going on I-81,” Youngkin said. “It’ll be great to have an alternative to jump on this great rail service.” The station’s location sparked considerable debate before officials decided to return to the historic Cambria site, where the original station once stood. “We had countless meetings with the community, and they were very honest as you may expect with their opinion,” said DJ Stadtler, Executive Director of Virginia Passenger Rail Authority. “They said you know what, the sight by the mall would be great, we understand that’s very very expensive, the site out at cinnabar road, not so good. We really, really want here at Cambria.” Christiansburg Mayor Mike Barber said he’s excited to finally see the project move forward. “It’s been a long effort, a lot of time spent on it, but it’s been time and money well spent,” he said. The new station represents a significant expansion of Virginia’s passenger rail network, providing Southwest Virginia residents with direct access to the Eastern Seaboard’s rail corridor. According to officials, Anthony Hayes, of Christiansburg, is charged with 4 counts of class one misdemeanor sexual battery. The Christiansburg Police Department received multiple complaints of inappropriate sexual contact during massage appointments at Pampered Healing Massage Therapy and Day Spa located in the 100 block of Arbor Drive. An investigation revealed Hayes to be the massage therapist in each of the complaints. He is currently being held in the Western Virginia Regional Jail with no bond. It’s a way to give kids another opportunity to get both meals offered during the school day. “My team brings this cart out every morning after the first class bell rings,” Knotts said. “Primarily for kids that may not have gotten to school timely for whatever reason, kids that just maybe aren’t hungry when they first wake up.” The meal includes an entree, fruit, snack bar, and a milk on the side. Knotts said the idea has been around for a long time, and this year it was put into action. “The first day I think we served less than 10 kids. I think we served 9 kids from the cart,” said Knotts. “It was new, they weren’t sure, and fast forward like I said we are almost doing 100 kids now,” Knotts said. For students like Caleb Haley, it’s an option they didn’t have before this year. Cafeteria manager for the middle school, Theresa Hinkley, said while it’s been a learning curve to get the program running smoothly, she knows how much this helps the students at the school. “The breakfast program here at this school has more than doubled what we normally fed before,” said Hinkley. They said the goal now with the grant money from No Kid Hungry is to expand the program to other schools in the district. Other schools in the region that also received grant money from No Kid Hungry for similar programs are Salem City Schools and Roanoke City Public Schools. Latest Earthquakes Virginia is sensitive to seismic waves generated by large earthquakes that occur around the world This well can be thought of as a natural seismograph: when seismic waves travel past the water levels in this well rise and fall rapidly This well gives us a peek into the ways the Earth beneath our feet is constantly changing Video captured by scientists from the USGS and the Virginia Department on Environmental Quality in November 2012 shows groundwater oscillations in the Christiansburg well following a magnitude 7.4 earthquake in Guatemala This phenomenon of earthquakes affecting groundwater levels was featured on an episode of the USGS podcast CoreCast USGS Geophysicist Evelyn Roeloffs explains more commonly known as the 'Christiansburg Well' is a water quality monitoring well located in Christiansburg What makes the Christiansburg Well interesting and unique is that it is sensitive to teleseismic waves generated by large earthquakes that occur all around the world the water levels in the well will often rise and fall rapidly even if the earthquake in question occurred on the other side of the world Water levels in the Christiansburg well are always rising and falling due to earth tides Earth tides are a phenomenon similar to ocean tides but affect our solid earth rather than ocean water levels Earth tides and even changes in barometric pressure can effect the water levels in some wells the water levels in the Christiansburg well gradually rise and fall just like ocean tides.  sometimes the water levels in this well change not-so-gradually These rapid changes in water level are often due to earthquakes Teleseismic waves are waves caused by earthquakes that have travelled long distances through the Earth's subsurface As these waves travel through rock formations this deformation can rapidly force water in and out of nearby wells The Christiansburg Well draws water from the Elbrook Formation which is a fractured rock aquifer made up of mostly limestone and dolomite that is part of the Valley and Ridge aquifers Water enters the well via fractures or cracks in the rock These fractures compress and expand as seismic waves pass through causing the water to be drawn in and out of the well similar to the way bellows work.  As groundwater moves in and out of the well the water level in the well rapidly rises and falls.   This water-level oscillation is recorded at 5-minute intervals by a pressure transducer and data logger maintained by our partners at the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.  Every hour, these data are transmitted via satellite to USGS servers and are available to view on the Christiansburg Well's site on Water Data For The Nation Below is a list of selected recent visible water-level responses in the Christiansburg Well and large earthquakes that preceded these changes.  Scroll right and left to see all relevant information Click on the hydrographs for larger images The time of CHRISTIANSBURG, Va – Railroad expansion is coming to the New River Valley, with construction starting as soon as next year. the project is part of the Virginia Passenger Rail Authorities’ expansion plan across the state of Virginia and brings the historic Cambria station back to Christiansburg for the first time since the nineteen seventies. “We were able to work with our partners at Norfolk Southern to access what they call the main line to expand service from Roanoke to the New River Valley, as you mentioned we’ll begin construction next year,” said Gerica Goodman, Director of External Affairs and Communications for VPRA. The Virginia Passenger Rail Authorities’ expansion of services is expected to generate over 33,000 jobs and generate over $6 billion in economic output statewide. I got a tour inside of the emergency room, and doctors said everything inside is state-of-the-art and will help to save countless lives. “You got CT availability, X-Ray, a fully functional lab, obviously, a trauma bay and resuscitation room, so, all the great resources that we have at the main hospital we also have here,” Chrisley said. I also talked to the CEO for LewisGale Montgomery, and she said while they have a hospital on the Christiansburg-Blacksburg line, minutes matter in an emergency and this can get care to folks faster on this side of the county. “This is 24/7, 365 days a year, board certified physicians,” said Dudley. “The same ones that we have at the hospital, the same clinicians and care teams. We are just excited to bring the front door of the hospital, which is usually the emergency room, to this community.” They said they can already tell being here will be great for the community.
