State and local officials celebrate the new Claiborne Public Boat Ramp on the Alabama River
representatives from the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) and state and local officials took part in a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the reopening of the recently renovated Claiborne Public Boat Ramp on the Alabama River in Monroe County
Highway 84 approximately 14 miles west of Monroeville
The boat ramp was temporarily closed in September 2024 for a major renovation that included a new two-lane launching slab that was constructed directly into the river channel to alleviate siltation issues experienced at the previous boat ramp
the parking lot was expanded by approximately three times its previous size to provide increased access to the Alabama River
The facility is also Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessible
“Quality access to outdoor recreation is important to all Alabamians and those who visit our great state to enjoy excellent boating and fishing,” said Chris Blankenship
“This updated facility will benefit the local community and surrounding areas by providing improved access to the Alabama River as well as supporting the state and local economies
We are grateful for the partnerships that made this project possible
and I especially thank Governor Kay Ivey for supporting our efforts throughout the state.”
Probate Judge and Chairman of the Monroe County Commission
said the newly renovated boat ramp will have a positive impact on communities in Monroe County and the surrounding areas
“The Monroe County Commission is proud to partner with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to make significant improvements to the Claiborne Landing,” Judge Stinson said
“It is vital that our residents and visitors have access to one of our county’s greatest natural resources
The improvements will give Monroe County a much needed economic boost.”
Alabama State Senator Robert Stewart and State Representative Thomas Jackson
praised the partnerships that made the Claiborne Public Boat Ramp renovation possible
“The Claiborne Public Boat Ramp is an important asset to the people of Monroe County and south Alabama,” Sen
“The renovation of this facility will provide better access to boating and fishing on the Alabama River for years to come
I want to thank Commissioner Blankenship and Governor Kay Ivey for their efforts to get this project completed
Projects like this show what is possible through the power of partnerships
We encourage everyone to visit the new Claiborne Public Boat Ramp and experience the excellent outdoor recreational opportunities that Monroe County has to offer.”
“We extend our gratitude to Commissioner Blankenship
Governor Ivey and everyone involved in the Claiborne Public Boat Ramp renovation,” said Rep
“This project demonstrates the importance of collaboration in the effort to increase access to outdoor recreation for our community
We truly appreciate the dedication and hard work that went into this project
and look forward to this new facility benefiting Monroe County residents and visitors for years to come.”
The Claiborne renovation is part of a series of boat ramp improvement projects currently in progress throughout the state
This boating access improvement project was completed through a partnership between ADCNR and Monroe County
Funding for the project was provided through the Sport Fish Restoration Program
which is supported through excise taxes on the sale of outboard motor fuel
fishing equipment and the sale of Alabama fishing licenses
Additional funding was provided by Innovate Alabama
a statewide public-private partnership focused on entrepreneurship
technology and innovation with a mission to help businesses grow roots in Alabama
Monroe County provided the services and labor to expand the parking lot
a new two-lane launching slab and 170-foot floating access pier was constructed at the Mount Vernon Public Boat Ramp in Mobile County
Mount Vernon’s parking area was also expanded and a new weigh-in pavilion was constructed for fishing tournaments
The Mount Vernon project was completed through a partnership between ADCNR
the Town of Mount Vernon and Mobile County
The project was funded by ADCNR from Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GOMESA) funds
The facility features a new two-lane launching slab that was constructed directly into the river channel

Start Your Plant-Based Journey For $8/month* With The Forks Meal Planner! Get It Now
By Courtney Davison,
58Jenné Claiborne was 8 years old when she cooked her first meal (Szechuan chicken)
and she’s rarely put down the spatula since
when the Atlanta native embraced veganism and started sharing vibrant
inventive recipes on her Sweet Potato Soul YouTube channel
she became a sought-after personal chef for vegan and whole-food
plant-based clients while continuing to grow her online community
Now, as a mom balancing a busy life, she knows firsthand how challenging it can be to get healthy meals on the table every day. “I don't spend a lot of time in the kitchen if I'm not working, because I'm busy, just like everybody else,” Claiborne says. “If I'm cooking just for my daughter and me, it's going to be something quick and easy.” That ethos inspired her latest book, Sweet Potato Soul Vegan Vibes
The gorgeous collection of 100 recipes is all about creating big flavors with minimal effort
showcasing Claiborne’s imagination and resourcefulness as a chef
We caught up with Claiborne about the new book, her ingenious oil-free granola recipe
Jenné Claiborne: When I first became vegan
and they never told me to stop eating dairy
I stopped experiencing all of my gastrointestinal issues
JC: I left Atlanta for college in '06 and I didn't move back until 2021
I had been living in Los Angeles for four years
looking for inspiration for my second cookbook
I was reminded of how diverse this place is
… I go to the grocery store and I see produce from all around the world
and I drive down the street and there are 10 different restaurants from 10 different parts of the planet
I very rarely bought produce at the grocery store in those four years
so the variety [of produce] is not as robust
… They [illustrate] the bounty and the abundance of eating plants
My first time ever going to a farmers market was when I moved to Boston for college
and that's kind of how I started eating plant-based
I didn't like 90% of the fruits I had been exposed to
But when I started going to farmers markets
I’ve never seen this!” That totally changed my life
JC: Tahini is one of my top-three favorite ingredients (Broccolini and sweet potatoes being the other two) because it is so versatile and it tastes amazing. I remember I lived in New York at the time when I first made that recipe. It was kind of a spinoff of my tahini cookie recipe, which is in my first cookbook, and it's also on the blog
I'd been making that recipe for a long time
and I realized that you don't have to form it into cookies
You can just sprinkle it on the tray and [bake it as] granola
JC: I love the essence of rose just in anything
I've got some tea blends with mint and rose
You could use rose powder—which is just ground up dried rose petals—to color an icing
I recently [did that] because I don't use artificial dyes in our food
and my daughter and nieces and I were making cupcakes
JC: One of my favorite recipes in the cookbook is the Perfect Pea Pesto Pasta
and frozen peas that you thaw and blend into a pesto
I always do a nice short pasta like gemelli
And the Za'atar Cauliflower Steaks would be perfect for Valentine's Day
They would be really nice served with that pea pesto pasta
because the za'atar has all these herbs in it
and that pea pesto pasta has basil and mint
so those would really complement each other
Or you could serve the pasta with the Simple Oyster Mushroom Steaks
If you are doing a Valentine's Day dinner after work
and you need to put something together in under 30 minutes
You wouldn't have to make anything in advance
so the tahini keeps them really nice and moist
And mushrooms don't require any oil to cook at all
Sometimes I'll sauté garlic in a little bit of oil before adding mushrooms to the pan
but the mushrooms themselves don't need any oil because they’re full of liquid on their own
Mushrooms are amazing if you're doing whole-food
What I mean by highly processed is stuff you could never make at home
Same with tempeh—super easy to make at home
and all of these replicas of meat and dairy
We're going to reserve that for 10–20% of the time
The reason I advocate this is I think it's helpful for people to transition into eating healthier
understanding that your diet doesn't have to be perfect right away [or ever]
But I do want to encourage people to keep doing better and better
I also like to mention that if you have a health condition and your doctor has told you you need to avoid all oil
And you can easily fall into the trap of going to Costco
You can tell yourself you’re just stocking the freezer for when you don’t feel like cooking and you’re only going to have it once a week
you're eating it every day because you have a container of 20
wholesome food that takes no more than 20 minutes
you don't have to rely on those highly processed foods as much
"I'm going to meal prep!" But I don't actually reliably do that on a regular basis
For example … I always have [cooked] brown rice in the fridge
so I might steam some frozen spinach and peas together
and then put that all in a bowl and top it with tahini sauce straight out of the jar
I'll make a tahini dressing with lemon and miso
she doesn't even want to slice her own apples
Her favorite thing to do in the kitchen is just mix stuff
… I don't throw away outdated spices anymore
JC: I'm glad you asked me about the adaptations for oil-free
because almost all the recipes in the cookbook
I've got these chocolate sweet potato muffins—maybe just use a little bit more sweet potato in that recipe instead of the oil
This cookbook definitely fits in that 80–20 philosophy of mine
where 80% to 90% of these recipes are more wholesome
… There is a balance of recipes in this cookbook
because I really wanted it to be for everybody

Terence Richardson and Ferrone Claiborne are coming home after President Joe Biden granted them clemency
The pair spent decades in prison despite being found not guilty of the 1998 murder of a Virginia police officer
After decades in prison, two men found not guilty of murdering a police officer but sentenced to life anyway are coming home. On Jan. 17, President Joe Biden commuted the sentences of nearly 2,500 people convicted of nonviolent drug offenses
including Terence Richardson and Ferrone Claiborne
“This moment underscores the urgent need to reform a system that too often denies fairness and truth,” Jarrett Adams, co-founder of Life After Justice and lead attorney for both men
“Life After Justice is committed to ensuring that Terence and Ferrone receive the support they need to address the trauma and lifelong impact of wrongful incarceration following their imminent release.”
Adams said that while the commutation allows Richardson and Claiborne to return to their families
the legal battle to exonerate them is not over
A state appellate court is still considering Richardson’s innocence petition
Richardson and Claiborne insist they did not kill Gibson
But as poor Black men accused of killing a white police officer in the South
they feared they could be sentenced to death if they went to trial and lost
both men pleaded guilty: Richardson to involuntary manslaughter and Claiborne to acting as an accessory to the crime.
But Gibson’s family decried the plea deals and sought harsher punishment. In response, federal prosecutors hit the pair with additional charges
alleging Richardson and Claiborne sold crack cocaine and murdered a police officer during a drug deal gone wrong
Last week, Biden commuted the drug conviction that led to Richardson and Claiborne’s life sentences. The state can now release the pair from prison. They are expected to get out in July
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin and state attorney general Jason Miyares said Richardson and Claiborne’s release outraged them.
Youngkin incorrectly stated that both men had “admitted to being responsible for the brutal killing of Officer Allen Gibson.”
“If the Democrats intend to build their vision of social justice on a pile of dead law enforcement officers
they could send no stronger message than the one they sent today,” Miyares said in a statement.
Richardson and Claiborne’s attorney rebuked Youngkin and Miyares
“We invite the public to take a closer look at the facts for themselves,” Adams said. “We encourage everyone to review all the filings
and make an informed decision about what is true and what is not
Transparency and accountability are essential in uncovering the full truth
and we believe the evidence speaks for itself
In 2021, former Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring’s Conviction Integrity Unit determined that law enforcement officials withheld evidence from Richardson’s defense attorneys
The agency said courts should grant Richardson a writ of innocence
“It is clear from the record that some information and evidence presented in Mr
Richardson’s federal trial was unavailable to him when he pled guilty in state court
including information that a key witness lied to state investigators and lied during the preliminary hearing,” Herring wrote.
But within a month of taking office in 2022, Miyares—a tough-on-crime Republican—reversed course. Miyares’s office has fought to keep the two men incarcerated
“The clemency decision is a vital step toward correcting a grave injustice,” Virginia NAACP President Rev. Cozy Bailey said in a statement
“The Waverly Two are not just a statistic; they are individuals whose lives were shattered by a flawed legal system.”
it called out Youngkin and Miyares for “politicizing” the case
“Instead of focusing on justice and truth,” the NAACP wrote
“they have chosen to manipulate facts for their political agenda.”

College Football Hall of Famer Jerry Claiborne gave Maryland football a new life from 1972-81
He also championed developing his student-athletes into men of good character.
the Terps had won just nine games in five years
he had already produced a winning program in his second season
His teams made six consecutive bowl games from 1973-78
with wins in the 1975 Gator Bowl and 1977 Hall of Fame Classic
Sporting News named Claiborne the nation's Coach of the Year
He achieved a 77-37-3 record during his decade in College Park and is undoubtedly one of the greatest coaches in Maryland football history.
In an effort to honor the legacy of the late Maryland Hall of Fame coach
many of his former letterwinners suggested creating a scholarship in his name
The initiative is already more than halfway through its goal of raising $250,000 for the Jerry Claiborne Scholarship Endowment.
“In addition to his on-the-field greatness
he instilled a set of principles that we didn't necessarily understand then,” Robert Schwartz
“He taught us the importance of commitment
… He was a guiding light and a surrogate dad.”
“I have more dreams about Maryland football than anything else,” Lorton said
Lorton and Schwartz partnered with the M Club Foundation to collect the initial pledges needed to establish the scholarship with the University of Maryland College Park Foundation
They quickly surpassed their initial goal of $50,000
17 former players and supporters have committed to the scholarship
“The M Club is proud to have played a small role in establishing this scholarship for Coach Claiborne,” said Laura Chiriaco
a single donor is needed to establish an endowment at $50,000
a group of former athletes can collectively establish an endowment
This is a great way to pay tribute to a coach or teammate or celebrate milestone anniversaries while benefiting future generations of student-athletes
Alumni like the Claiborne men truly embody our mission of ‘Athletes Helping Athletes.’”
The scholarship will be preferred to student-athletes who have used up their eligibility but have yet to finish their degree
“These guys would use their eligibility up but didn't have a degree
why don't you be a grad assistant or something so you can get your degree.”
The letterwinners came up with the idea of honoring their former coach after honoring another individual who left an impression on them during their time at Maryland
they lived in the Ellicott Hall dorms and had a resident assistant named James Merkel
who doubled as a football academic counselor.
Merkel was diagnosed with stage four stomach cancer and was given six months to live
Several people who knew him well got together
and Lorton proposed honoring him with a scholarship in his name
They successfully raised $100,000 to create the Jim Merkel Endowed Scholarship for Football
and others met each other for the first time
everyone connected over two individuals — Merkel and Coach Claiborne.
“Guys came for Merkel’s party that I had never seen or met,” Lorton said
I was taking the lead with trying to get people to give and whatnot
it would be nice if we did this more often.’”
Merkel ended up making an incredible recovery
and many of Claiborne’s former players have since hosted more reunions
They even nicknamed themselves the “Claiborne Men.” The collective brought them to seek a way to honor their former coach.
“Your teammate was your roommate when I was a student
and I think there was a bond established there,” Schwartz said
“The reason I think our players are still united 50 years later is because we grew up together.”
The former student-athletes recently attended a reunion in College Park on Sept
The Jerry Claiborne Scholarship Endowment was also announced during the first quarter of Maryland’s game against Michigan State on Sept
while many Claiborne-era players were recognized as honorary captains.
The Claiborne Men aim to achieve their $250,000 fundraising target by the end of this fiscal year — June 2025
seeing others come together in support of his father means the world.
Jonathan lettered under his father from 1975-77
He also previously served as president of the University of Maryland’s Young Alumni Organization and M Club and as a board member of the University of Maryland Educational Foundation
“It makes me happy that he had a positive influence on a lot of people
… This is a group that has a beyond normal level of camaraderie
and everybody seems to share a common positive experience.”

She hopes others will pursue careers in military—and civil—aviation.
Before retiring from United as a captain in the Boeing 787
Theresa Claiborne was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S
Claiborne would become the first Black woman to command and instruct in the Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker during her seven years on active duty and another 13 years in the Reserves
becoming the carrier’s second Black woman pilot
Claiborne wrapped up her career as a captain in the Boeing 787 Dreamliner
Her last duty as a pilot took place on May 20–23
She has logged more than 23,000 flight hours
safely carrying millions of passengers around the world from Cape Town to Tokyo
With the goal of inspiring a more diverse generation of aviation professionals
Claiborne serves as president of Sisters of the Skies
Claiborne recently spoke with Air & Space Quarterly senior editor Diane Tedeschi
It all started with me deciding I wanted to go into the military
I was attending California State University at Sacramento
and part of the program was to attend a six-week training camp
I went down to Vandenberg Air Force Base for my six weeks
and that was the time for the Air Force to look at me and for me to look at the Air Force
I had flown on airliners before but had never actually been in a small airplane—so this was just huge for me
You’ve probably heard this story from many people
Two Cessna T-37 Tweets fly in formation over Texas
The T-37 was the Air Force’s primary trainer for decades until its retirement in 2009
An ROTC familiarization flight in the Tweet is what got Claiborne excited about pursuing a career in military aviation
What can you tell me about the flight in the T-37
I can’t imagine it lasted more than 30 minutes
and went up to an area and did all kinds of acrobatics
But five minutes would’ve been enough to get me stoked
I found out I was the first Black woman pilot in the Air Force
I believe it was Ebony magazine that published an article that said: “Hey
the United States Air Force has its first Black woman pilot
Here she is.” The Tuskegee Airmen organization had a big chapter in Sacramento
and they saw the article and welcomed me with open arms
thank God I don’t have to endure the things they had to do
I had role models when I started my career in commercial aviation
Captain Bill Norwood was the first Black pilot at United
After you graduated from United’s training program
they said: “You’ve completed all this book learning
we want you to go out in the real world and sit on the flight deck to see how the crew acts
and I reached out to shake his hand and said: “Captain Norwood
I’d like to do my over-the-shoulder with you.”
Another role model at United was Captain Pat Palazzolo
He was a 747 captain whom I flew with on numerous occasions
and I’ll never forget how I would look at him and think: “This is the kind of captain I want to be.” And Pat was another one who came with me on my final flight
I found out from a woman who was an instructor at Laughlin Air Force Base in Texas that some of the guys were saying: “Well
she’s too short.” (I’m 5’2”.) This woman was my angel
She did everything she needed to do to get here
whenever we had mass briefings with the fighters (if we were going out on a joint mission)
it was very common for the commander to walk in and start the briefing by saying: “Good morning
But even if there were other women in the briefing
they would still address the group as if it was men only
there were so many wonderful male pilots—I’d fly with them any day
A General Dynamics F-16 takes fuel from a Boeing KC-135 in 1981
Claiborne perfected the art of flying the KC-135 smooth and steady during refuelings
Did it sometimes feel like a burden to be the Air Force’s first Black female pilot
we knew at that point that I was the first Black woman pilot in the Air Force
Yet they would not allow any reporters onto the base to cover it
What I was told by a secretary was that the command structure said: “Hey
she’s no more important than anyone else in this graduating class
therefore I won’t have any reporters on my base.” Instead
they told the public affairs office to issue a press release
and many other publications wanted to cover the story
But since reporters weren’t allowed on base
we don’t want your story.” But Ebony magazine said: “This is important
We’ll take whatever you can give us.” Ebony published the story a few months later
my instinct was to just be real quiet about my breakthrough in the Air Force
and I remember when the Ebony article came out
a few people found out and it was like: “Whoa
many people did not know about my accomplishments until probably the last five years I was there
Because I didn’t walk around with that on my sleeve
I’m just now getting to the point where I’m realizing that I do have a responsibility to continue what we started
How much say did you have in what type of aircraft you would fly for the Air Force
Claiborne learned to fly jets in the Northrop T-38
so there were only about five different airframes we could choose from
There were a couple versions of the KC-135
and there was at least one model of the C-130
My first choice was a C-141 and then a C-5
because it was part of Military Airlift Command at the time
We had what we called “assignment drop night,” and I remember getting the KC-135
Some of the guys in my class got assigned to the B-52
and the commander looked at a bunch of us who were complaining that we got a KC-135
and he said: “What’s wrong with y’all?” And I said: “I wanted a -141.” “Me too,” said a few of the other pilots
The commander looked at us and said: “You know what
And now you’re complaining because you got a KC-135.” We all looked at each other and said: “He’s got a point there.” The KC-135 wasn’t my first choice
it’s a beautiful airplane—one of the most gorgeous airplanes
and when I got off active duty and went to the Reserves
there was not one airplane at my reserve base that was younger than myself
We’ve got the KC-10—we did do that—and now they transitioned to the military version of the 767 that’s a tanker
What qualities are required to be a good tanker pilot
it’s not like being a fighter pilot—we used to call them good sticks
you fly up to altitude where you’re a platform for the receiver
heavy airplane so it’s important to fly smooth and pay attention to details.
Did you fly a refueling mission that was particularly challenging
I can’t think of anything specific that was really harrowing
I was on my share of missions where we’re dragging fighters
that’s what we call it—“dragging”—when we’re traveling with a group of fighters
They don’t have the fuel to make it all the way across
This capability is what made the United States Air Force such a great warfighting machine
The tanker community had a little saying: “No one kicks ass without tanker gas.”
I need this much fuel,” and I wouldn’t say we were stingy
There was always a plan of how much fuel each fighter got
but there were times when people would burn more fuel than they expected
and you had to take them a little further—you had to give them a little extra gas
I need to make sure that I’m going to have enough gas
I also lost water-injection back in the day—on the runway for takeoff
so I can’t say there was ever a time when I was petrified and didn’t know how to handle the situation
I can remember doing a refueling at a very low altitude
When you were refueling aircraft flying into combat
how much did you know about the missions they were about to fly
But during times of conflict—Desert Shield
but we get briefings about the threats that are out there and what our forces are doing
I’m not going to say we were briefed on specifics
But we knew enough to know what the importance of our mission was
And then they’ll be coming back to the tanker to top off
Of the commercial aircraft Theresa Claiborne flew
How can we get more diversity in the ranks of both military pilots and airline pilots
There’s a lot of noise out there about people not being qualified
We all have the same instructors; we have the same evaluators
My job is to make sure that young girls—and young men—know that aviation is an opportunity for them.
I never felt like I had any reason to fly Airbus
Although I did think that the Airbus A350 is a nice-looking airplane
After completing her final flight for United Airlines on May 23
Claiborne was celebrated by friends and co-workers at a retirement party at Newark Liberty International Airport
I must’ve had at least 20 friends and family on the flight
and a lot of my Sisters of the Skies were there—people whom I’ve mentored
and we had two days on the ground in Lisbon
And then the flight home will be my last hurrah
and I felt like there really wasn’t a whole lot more I needed to do to prove to anyone that I deserved to be there
Although it was a proving ground every time I went on a flight
you need to be safe.” And of course the entire way home
You better make a nice one because mom is on the airplane.” Normally
you have an airplane with 300 passengers who don’t know you
I have a lot of folks on this airplane that know me
so I was determined to make a smooth landing
and my landing was beautiful—absolutely beautiful
Sisters of the Skies organizes outreach events such as Girls Rock Wings to educate young women of color about career possibilities in aviation
did you acknowledge the finality of the moment
there were little pangs of: This is your last time
I don’t remember any tears except for when I walked into the airport and people were cheering me
We appreciate everything you’ve done for us
There were also a few tears at the beginning of the trip
There was a large entourage of military people that came for that final push-back out of Newark on the way to Lisbon
and there was a young man who is a junior ROTC student
I could see him standing in the terminal through the glass as we were getting ready to push back
this young man snapped to attention and saluted me
because I’m looking at this kid and I’m thinking
and other benefactors to share the history and impact of aviation and spaceflight
and inspire future generations. With your help
we can continue to preserve and safeguard the world’s most comprehensive collection of artifacts representing the great achievements of flight and space exploration

An undertold portion of Duke basketball’s history will be put to the silver screen for the first time
Dr. Javier Wallace, postdoctoral associate of African and African American studies, hosted a pre-screening Feb. 12 of “C.B.: Power to the Player,” a film he produced celebrating the life and struggles of Dr. Claudius “C.B.” Claiborne, the first African American basketball player at Duke
A select group — including Emmy-nominated producer and editor Funmi Ogunro and Martin Paul Smith
executive producer and an assistant professor of the practice of education at Duke — joined Claiborne to view the film.
Wallace and I met when we were in elementary school … He hit me up and said he wanted to tell the story of C.B.
and he wanted to tell it in the film format,” Ogunro said
I said I would love to make a movie about C.B.”
Claiborne first joined the program during the 1966-67 season under coach Vic Bubas
graduating in 1969 with a degree in mechanical engineering
While he had plenty of success off the court after graduation
the film largely centers on his story as it relates to basketball and his time at the University — which was as much about fighting for civil rights as it was bouncing a ball.
“I just wasn't satisfied with the story I was hearing about Dr
Claiborne and his contributions to the University
The three-pillared academic movement aims to critically evaluate how race and identity affect the politics of collegiate athletics.
The roughly 16-minute documentary runs through Claiborne’s upbringing in Danville
featuring him returning to his old high school and speaking to the staff there.
There are a variety of other interviews beside the namesake throughout the piece
Claiborne’s best friend on the basketball team
All set behind a jazz soundtrack from a hired composer
Claiborne’s journey is spelled out in a sequence of interviews coupled with archival photos and videos
The pioneer details his process of being recruited to Duke and its significance at the time before going into his experience as a student at the University.
While time is given to his successes on the court
mixed in with game footage and interviews with Lind
the majority of the film discusses Claiborne’s greater societal impact on campus.
This document came about during one of the most influential moments in school history and Claiborne’s life. The Allen Building takeover, which happened 56 years ago to the day from the screening
is the key emotional segment of the documentary
With a backdrop of intense shots and footage from the event
Claiborne recounts his experience as part of a group that fundamentally changed how Duke operates.
because this University was not the same University pre-1969 that it became … The difference between what happened before Allen Building
segregated regional University — and who it had the opportunity to become afterwards
when it decided that it wanted to do something,” Claiborne said to the audience
it ended with a reflection from Claiborne and others about his life and a shot of him patrolling the floor at his former stomping ground of Cameron Indoor Stadium
acknowledging his role as a foundational piece of Duke’s storied history
The event also coincided with the program’s celebration of Black History Month; general manager Rachel Baker helped to moderate the event
the team wore Claiborne-inspired warmup shirts before their game against Cal that evening and Claiborne himself was brought out to shoot a free throw for charity.
Among the crowd were members of the Duke basketball community, professors at Duke, members of the Durham Success Summit — a initiative put on by the city to mentor young Black men — and family members of Claiborne that accompanied the esteemed guest
Despite the accomplishment of creating a documentary
plans are in the works to make a full-length film about Claiborne’s life
diving more into his life before and after Duke
and he talks a lot about his upbringing in Danville
We wanted to include all of that in his film
but we had a time limit of about 14-16 minutes,” Ogunro said
“Our next step in this phase of telling C.B.’s story is to produce a feature-length version of the film where we can get into the nitty-gritty.”
The guests did not leave empty handed either; Claiborne graciously signed a limited-edition poster of the film for all moviegoers to commemorate the occasion.
The film is not yet available to the public but will soon go on a festival tour before distribution is permitted to general audiences
The most notable of these stops is the Oscar-qualifying Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival August 1-9.

Prince of Monaco will stand for $30,000 in 2025 | Sara Gordon
Two new stallions with powerful partnerships behind them will begin their stud careers at Claiborne Farm in 2025
Prince of Monaco
and Bright Future
a Grade I-winning son of Curlin
will bring the Hancock family operation's roster up to 11 members
a third newcomer joined Claiborne when Jacob West toke on the role of stallion seasons and bloodstock manager
who continues to manage his company West Bloodstock
has been busy ahead of his first breeding season with Claiborne
One of his initial undertakings was overseeing the installation of a walking ring inside the farm's iconic stallion complex
The new investment has seen plenty of use as breeders have dropped in to visit the latest stallion recruits over the past several months
“With the history and the tradition that is associated with Claiborne and the way they do things around here
there's no excuse for the success,” said West
I get to be a part of something that's been special for a long time.”
One of West's longstanding bloodstock clients Mike Repole co-campaigned Claiborne's new addition Bright Future was a $350,000 yearling for Repole Stables and St Elias Stables and he went on to collect just under a million in earnings
“There's a reason why he's standing here and it doesn't have anything to do with my association with the horse,” West explained
“Walker [Hancock] and Bernie Sams were believers in the horse before I even came on board
When it came time to negotiate a stallion deal
they were the first phone call that we made.”
A winner on debut by nearly five lengths early in his sophomore season
" class="horse-link" target="_blank">Bright Future's signature win came the following year in the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes
where he battled to deny Grade I victor Proxy (Tapit) by a nose at the wire
The Todd Pletcher trainee later claimed the GIII Salvator Mile Stakes
West said that Bright Future's active family was another boost to his stallion credentials
His half-sister Musical Mischief (Into Mischief) claimed this year's GII Locust Grove Stakes and his half-brother Booth (Mitole) was a 'TDN Rising Star' at Keeneland last October
“Grandview and Repole Stable just bought his yearling half-brother by Maxfield at Keeneland September for $800,000
so we're big believers in the family,” noted West
“We feel like he's a horse that fits what American breeders are looking for
He was a son of Curlin with speed and he was able to carry it over a route of ground.”

" class="horse-link" target="_blank">Bright Future will stand for $12,500 in 2025 and owners Repole and Vincent Viola of St
Elias have retained an interest in the new sire
“He's been a popular horse amongst breeders,” said West
“We see the likes of Good Magic and other sons of Curlin that have gone on
He's got the pedigree backing and he's got the support of his owners
The best day for this horse was when the ticket was signed for him as a yearling by Vinnie and Mike because they're going to support him and they're going to give him every chance that he can get.”
Another stallion with an active ownership group

A $950,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling bred by Stonestreet
the son of Speighstown was at the head of his class in California last year as a juvenile for Bob Baffert
earning the 'Rising Star' nod when he broke his maiden on debut by eight lengths and then scoring in the GIII Best Pal Stakes and the GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity
He closed the season with a fifth-place finish in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile
“Prince of Monaco came onto our radars right after the Best Pal
when he earned a 103 Beyer,” said West
“It showed how brilliant he really was and being a son of Speighstown
it kind of picked everybody's heads up around here
He stacked up against some of the best 2-year-olds in the country.”
" class="horse-link" target="_blank">Prince of Monaco put in two runner-up performances against Grade I company behind Book'em Danno (Bucchero) in the Woody Stephens Stakes and Domestic Product (Practical Joke) in the H
" class="horse-link" target="_blank">Prince of Monaco will stand for $30,000 in his debut season
“He's been incredibly popular since we got him in,” West explained
“For breeders to see a son of Speighstown out of a Medaglia d'Oro mare
it's the perfect blend of speed over distance
He's an outcross for a lot of different mares that are here in Central Kentucky and around the world
you think he's good looking and then when you show up here

a vegan chef and content creator known for her YouTube channel SweetPotatoSoul
recently shared the five vegan food essentials she and her daughter eat daily
who has been vegan since 2011 and raised her six-year-old daughter on a plant-based diet since birth
uses her platform to show how vegan living can be practical
you can find them anywhere,” Claiborne says
is to help people who are new to plant-based eating – or those who want to incorporate more whole foods into their diet – start with ingredients that are accessible and nutrient-dense
Here are the five vegan foods Claiborne eats every day and why they’re worth considering for your own routine

sweet potatoes are a staple in Claiborne’s home
She describes them as her favorite food and highlights both their flavor and nutritional value
“Sweet potatoes are so nutritious,” she says
giving your body energy that you need to think clearly
Sweet potatoes are complex carbohydrates that contain fiber
beta-carotene (a powerful antioxidant that converts to vitamin A)
Claiborne notes that vitamin C “is also great for something else: collagen production.”
sweet potatoes are easy to cook and can be used in both sweet and savory dishes
Claiborne has published recipes on her website ranging from sweet potato pie to air-fried wedges and even a sweet potato latte
Another daily essential for Claiborne is lentils
“There’s nothing you cannot do with lentils,” she says
Lentils are a type of legume and are rich in plant-based protein
Claiborne pointed out that lentils are convenient and affordable: “You can cook lentils in the Instant Pot in just 10 minutes.”
She emphasizes that healthy eating does not have to be expensive
noting that lentils are widely available and budget-friendly
Claiborne and her daughter consume flax seeds daily
“Omega-3 fatty acids are necessary for brain
Flax seeds are among the best plant-based sources of these fats
Claiborne recommends purchasing whole flax seeds and grinding them at home in small batches to retain freshness and nutrient content
“You need to grind them to be able to digest and take advantage of the nutrients inside,” she explains
Flax seeds are a regular addition to her morning oatmeal and smoothies and are also used in baking as an egg replacement
She notes that they are “available everywhere” and can be incorporated into a variety of dishes

Cruciferous vegetables – including kale
and collard greens – feature in Claiborne’s meals every day
“This category of foods is incredibly nutritious in so many ways,” she says
These vegetables contain sulfur compounds that are beneficial to health but can produce a strong smell when overcooked
Claiborne suggests lightly steaming or roasting cruciferous vegetables to preserve nutrients and avoid bitterness
She also notes that while these vegetables are common
“This is your reminder to eat them every day,” she says
a process that can make bread easier to digest
making it less processed than many shelf-stable loaves
Claiborne stores it in the freezer to extend its shelf life
She also highlights sourdough-based products such as pasta and crackers
which are now available from online retailers
“The gut bacteria in your belly love sourdough,” she adds
and sourdough bread – form the foundation of Claiborne’s plant-based routine
They also serve as a starting point for anyone looking to eat more whole
plant-based foods without overcomplicating their meals

Christmas has come early for Deacon fans this year, as junior running back Demond Claiborne has announced that he will return to Wake Forest for his senior season
Turtle Race pic.twitter.com/zDsbrNiNDJ
All of that combined to give Claiborne the 4th most all-purpose yards in the ACC with 131.7 yards per game
Getting Claiborne back for his senior season is huge for Wake Forest
as it gives the Deacs a reliable playmaker in pretty much every facet of the offense
With the Deacs losing both quarterbacks and their top two receivers from this season
having a workhorse like Claiborne that can be the focal point of the offense and dominate in so many different ways is going to make things so much easier on a young quarterback (assuming Hecklinski is the starter
as he has every year that he has been at Wake Forest
I don’t think 1,500 rushing yards is out of the question next season
The 2025 football season is already off to a good start for Wake Forest
