IOWA CITY − When the moment calls for something special, especially at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Caitlin Clark has been known to deliver
Clark put on a dazzling comeback show to steal an in-state rivalry win
With a Big Ten regular-season title on the line in 2022, at the end of Clark’s sophomore year
Iowa sold out Carver-Hawkeye for the first time since 1988
she put on a show to remember – going 8-of-11 from 3-point range and scoring 38 points with 11 assists in a 104-80 rout of sixth-ranked Michigan
Carver’s fans have been emotionally invested in Clark for that reason
She always rose to the occasion when it mattered most
That also included ESPN’s "College GameDay" visit to end the 2023 season (and an unforgettable walk-off 3 to beat No
2 Indiana) and the night she was set to break Kelsey Plum’s NCAA scoring record – and merely scored a career-high (and arena record) 49 points
she put on a show in her first professional game in Iowa City – while simultaneously kicking off her second season in the WNBA
"Something about this gym," Clark would say afterward with a smile
Clark scored on a sweet slide-step 3-pointer 32 seconds into the Indiana Fever’s May 4 exhibition game – from just inside the tip of logo Herky’s beak
six rebounds and five assists in just under 19 minutes of action as Indiana rolled to a 108-44 rout of the helpless but spirited Brazil National Team
Knowing the gravity of her Iowa City return
Clark wore her black-and-gold "Bruce Lee Kobe" Nike shoes "that I would have worn literally for every big game in my career at Iowa," she said
Clark was a blast to watch in her first game in Iowa City in 13½ months
since the Hawkeyes escaped West Virginia in the round-of-32 in the 2024 NCAA Tournament
But one of the cool things about this day evolved at sold-out Carver-Hawkeye was how the fans in attendance roared for all the Fever players
Clark said she told her teammates before the game
“it's going to be the loudest arena you’ve ever played in.”
when Kelsey Mitchell lobbed home a 3 early in the first quarter
the place went nuts – with a reading of 116 on a press-row decibels reader
just a tick lower than 117 for Clark’s first 3
The noise continued as new acquisition DeWanna Bonner swished a deep ball from the left wing
After Clark checked out for the first time
the crowd was still completely engaged for the five Fever players not wearing No
Sydney Colson flipped a behind-the-back pass to Natasha Howard for two
as if Kate Martin had just found Gabbie Marshall for a splashed-home 3-pointer in 2023 or 2024
There is a lot of unfounded talk nationally that all these “new” WNBA fans are all about Clark
While it’s true that Clark is the driving force of exploding interest
the Sunday afternoon crowd at Carver showed by the thousands that these fans (dressed in a pretty even mix of Fever red and Hawkeye gold
which pleased Clark) have become Indiana Fever fans as well – just like they loved Kate and Gabbie and Monika and Hannah and Syd and everyone else along the way
“One of the best parts about the fan base is it’s not a one-player thing,” Clark said before the game
“It was the same thing during my time at Iowa
and they loved every single girl on the team
whether they played 40 minutes a night or whether they never got in the game.”
Bringing this Fever team to Iowa City for a game that doesn’t count in the WNBA standings – the real wins and losses start to get tallied May 17
when the Fever play Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky – was a stroke of genius by new team president Kelly Krauskopf
there was plenty of money to be grabbed here
and those in Iowa happily swiped their credit cards for $60 to $200 face-value tickets that sold out in 15 minutes
But this was a move that demonstrated the passion of Hawkeye fans who have become Fever fans
And a day like this can’t help but keep those folks in the fold going into a WNBA season that should see Clark and the Fever contending for a league title
Indiana at +340 has the second-best title odds behind the New York Liberty’s +220
This Iowa City stage hit the mark for women’s basketball in our state and in the WNBA
the who’s-who turned out Sunday – including Marshall
recent Hawkeye assistant coach Raina Harmon
former coach Lisa Bluder and the current Iowa women’s roster (which was introduced during an in-game break
with Kylie Feuerbach conducting an in-game interview and coach Jan Jensen getting the mic later)
This was another celebration of not only Clark but the impact of Iowa women’s basketball
“These are the moments that you kind of just want to stay in for forever," Clark said
"I'm certain I’ll be looking back at a lot of pictures and videos from today.”
Clark was at the forefront of this fun Fever day
She didn’t plan on playing a ton of minutes
after missing Indiana’s first exhibition game the day before with “leg tightness” – but she looked great against Brazil
completely revved up for her second pro season
she’s been adding muscle to help her prepare for a physical WNBA regular season and postseason
she made sure to give the fans what they wanted in an unbelievably lopsided affair
At one point midway through the third quarter
she launched an attempt from the “22” logo – the spot from which she broke Plum’s scoring record
Clark got an inbounds pass late in the third quarter off a rare Brazil make
She quickly looked at the clock and saw it read 30 seconds
she knew coach Stephanie White was about to pull her for the day
So Clark took three dribbles and just after crossing halfcourt pulled up in front of ESPN's Ryan Ruocco and Rebecca Lobo and probably 3 feet behind the No
"WOW," Ruocco exclaimed as she released the deep shot
"You bet!" Ruocco roared with his signature call
knowing that even in a game that meant very little
she gave her fans (and the ESPN audience) another unforgettable experience at Carver-Hawkeye Arena
that’s like two-for-one range,” Clark said
Might as well launch one.’ That was pretty fun
You don’t always realize how far back you are
I had to give the fans a little something.”

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The fans got exactly what they wanted Sunday at Iowa's Carver-Hawkeye Arena: another vintage Caitlin Clark moment
It came in her Indiana Fever's 108-44 victory over the Brazilian national team in a WNBA exhibition game that was also a sold-out homecoming for the former Hawkeyes star
Clark made an estimated 36-foot 3-pointer from just behind the spot on the court that has her No
That's where she hit the shot as an Iowa senior in 2024 that broke the NCAA women's basketball career-scoring record
"I don't know if I shoot 36-footers every day
but 30-plus for sure," Clark said with a chuckle when asked if she regularly practices shots from that far back
"It was just kind of a spur-of-the-moment thing
with the overwhelming majority of the full house of just under 15,000 wearing Hawkeyes or Fever shirts with Clark's name and No
Clark hit the shot with 26.1 seconds left in the third quarter, knowing she would sit the final quarter. It was her first game action since Sept. 25 last season, when the Fever were swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Connecticut Sun
Clark missed Saturday's exhibition victory in Indianapolis over the Washington Mystics with a lower leg injury
a precautionary decision to help her be ready for Sunday
She finished the game Sunday with 16 points
and said it was just good to be back in action again
Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever beat Brazil 108-44 in a WNBA exhibition game Sunday. Getty Images"I haven't played [a game] in
so I was a little nervous going in," Clark said
"The competitive spirit in me -- you just want to play really good for these fans."
Clark said it is special to her how much the Iowa fans have embraced not just her in the WNBA
"It's hard to put it into words what exactly it means to me," the Iowa native said
I'm just very thankful to come back to a place that continues to support me."
Stephanie White, a former Fever player and coach, has returned to lead the team this season. As a Purdue guard in the 1990s, White played at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, and she has been a television analyst for many games at the venue. But she said it was different being on the sidelines with the support of the crowd.
"I thought it was electric," White said. "To actually feel the energy, it gives you a lift. It's why we all do what we do, to feed [off of] these kinds of environments. Oftentimes, it's difficult for fans to get to a WNBA city, and we have great college basketball fan bases throughout the country that deserve an opportunity to see these women doing what they do at the highest level."
White added of Clark's monster 3-pointer: "That's just who she is, what she does. It was a good momentum builder and, of course, what everybody wants to see from Caitlin, especially in this arena."
Sunday's game followed two college "homecoming" WNBA exhibition games held Friday, at Notre Dame and LSU.
With Caitlin Clark -- the Iowa women's basketball legend who now plays for the Indiana Fever-- back in town
fans wanted to see the star guard play a game at her alma mater
The nostalgia began early as fans took their seats
When Clark was first announced in starting lineups for the Fever-Brazil exhibition contest
the arena noise became reminiscent of a playoff game
14,998 fans attended a WNBA preseason game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday afternoon
There was initial uncertainty as to whether or not Clark would even play. She missed the Fever's game on Saturday against the Washington Mystics due to a leg injury
Clark did not consider it to be a serious issue
The Fever clearly didn't think it was serious either
Clark made her 18 minutes of action count on Sunday
The Fever All-Star scored 16 points while shooting 6-10 from the field and 4-6 from beyond the arc
Her leg issue did not seem to be problematic
Caitlin Clark wanted to give the fans a show at Iowa on Sunday. She delivered on that goal, even connecting on a 36-foot shot from just in front of half-court. After the game, Clark reacted to the turnout of fans at the arena
they always exceed (my expectations)," Clark said of the fans
they were amazing and just really thankful to be able to come back here and appreciate this place and these fans
it was as loud as it gets when we went on that 8-0 run to start the game
Clark was later asked to describe the day in one word
The Fever are focused on preparing for the 2025 regular season
They understand that their 2-0 record so far in the preseason won't mean anything on May 17 when they begin their campaign against the Chicago Sky
Sunday's game at Iowa was clearly special for Clark
She took time to sign plenty of autographs following the win as well
Everyone in the arena was hoping to meet the former Iowa superstar
and is quickly becoming a fan-favorite in Indiana as well
There is no shortage of stars around the NBA and WNBA
but Caitlin Clark may be the biggest draw in all of basketball right now

Of what Clark could get across during the interview was a message to her teammates as well as her WNBA fans in the building
"I'm just glad I could bring them all here
I wouldn't be who I am if it wasn't for them
This is what women's basketball is all about
Sunday's game featuring the Fever and Brazil became the first ever WNBA game inside Iowa's arena
Clark and the Fever will tip-off their regular season on May 17, at home, against Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky
made a triumphant return to Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday
suiting up for the Indiana Fever in a preseason exhibition against Brazil's national team
The game marked her second appearance back in Iowa City since her record-shattering collegiate career at the University of Iowa
Clark sank a deep three-pointer from the very spot where she broke the NCAA all-time scoring record in February 2024
captured and shared by ESPN's SportsCenter
reminding fans of Clark's unparalleled shooting range and flair for the dramatic
"She brought this sport really on the map
she’s going to inspire girls everywhere playing basketball."
"From her own personal logo is wild stuff," another noted
Caitlin is just the GOAT," exclaimed a fan
"Caitlin Clark just took us back to her NCAA record-breaking days with that shot."
Clark's return to her alma mater comes as she prepares for her second WNBA season. After a historic rookie year with the Fever, where she averaged 19.2 points, a league-leading 8.4 assists, and 5.7 rebounds per game, Clark has spent the offseason focusing on strength training to enhance her performance
with teammates and coaches praising her improved physicality and leadership on the court
The exhibition game against Brazil served as both a homecoming and a showcase of Clark's continued growth as a professional athlete
As she gears up for the Fever's regular-season opener on May 17 against the Chicago Sky
fans eagerly anticipate what Clark will accomplish in her sophomore season
Her return to Iowa City was more than just a game; it was a celebration of her journey from college standout to professional star and a testament to her enduring connection with the Hawkeye community

but one three-pointer stood out above all of the four she drained during Sunday's action
Immediately after hitting the ridiculous shot
Clark smiled and pointed at the scorer's table as she ran back up the court on defense

The WNBA tipped off its preseason this weekend
with many of the league’s biggest stars in action
the WNBA televised all of its preseason games for the first time
including an ESPN showcase for Caitlin Clark’s return to Iowa with her revamped Indiana Fever squad
The Fever won their first two exhibition games
even with Clark sitting out their opener against the Washington Mystics
Jewell Loyd and Chelsea Gray took the floor for the first time as a Las Vegas Aces quartet
Paige Bueckers began her career with the Dallas Wings
and Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese returned to LSU in a homecoming
Although only seven of the league’s 13 teams have played
here are six early thoughts on what we’ve seen
It’s hard to draw too many conclusions from the Sky’s 27-point win over the Brazilian national team
but it’s already clear that Chicago’s offense will look different this season
After attempting a league-low 14.9 3-pointers per game last year
the Sky took 12 first-half 3s in their preseason opener and finished with 29 3-point attempts
first-year head coach Tyler Marsh was pleased with Chicago’s shot selection and how players used open driving lanes to score and find teammates for open treys
Almost 60 percent of Chicago’s field goal attempts against Brazil were jump shots
HAD TO WATCH THAT AGAIN🤑#Skytown pic.twitter.com/tJ6gi0In5s
— Chicago Sky (@chicagosky) May 3, 2025
Marsh and his staff have talked about wanting to draw Reese away from the basket
The strategy allows more space for Reese to screen-and-dive while also allowing teammates to attack the rim and avoid facing a crowded paint
Expect Reese to also handle more playmaking
initiating some offense much like Wilson does in Las Vegas
(Marsh was an Aces assistant from 2022 to 2024.) Guard Courtney Vandersloot’s return to the Sky should also pay huge dividends for Reese and fellow second-year frontcourt player Kamilla Cardoso
Vandersloot found Reese for her first basket of the game and finished with five assists in 15 minutes
One field goal came on a hard drive right as she finished over Bonner
Hull and Sophie Cunningham as first-year coach Sydney Johnson tested her against players of various sizes and skill sets
She’ll be a Swiss Army knife for Washington this season
Saturday was the start of what should be a productive rookie season
The Fever had the league’s best offense after the All-Star break in 2024: 109.6 points per 100 possessions
more than 3 points better than second-place New York
In Clark’s first game of the year Sunday against the Brazilian national team (she missed Indiana’s preseason opener against Washington with a left leg injury)
posting an offensive rating of 138.5 in a 108-44 win
Clark was at the center of it all
Despite coach Stephanie White saying that Clark looked like she hadn’t practiced in three days
the Fever star was efficient from the field
hitting 6 of 10 shots and 4 of 6 3-pointers
The ball zipped across the court on offense
as the Fever kept things moving with a series of drive-and-kicks
The team made 12 of 18 3-pointers in the first half
One of White’s offseason goals was to ease the offensive burden on Clark by spreading the workload so Clark wasn’t responsible for creating everything
Clark still took several step-back and pull-up jumpers — to be expected
especially when her own logo is on the Carver-Hawkeye Arena court — but offseason addition Sydney Colson tied Clark with a game-high five assists
Five other Indiana players had at least three field goals in the first half (the competitive portion of the game)
as the Fever generated good shots in various ways
That’s an important first step for Indiana as it prepares for a 44-game regular season and long playoff run
Las Vegas’ star quartet struggled to put together consistent production in an unsuccessful three-peat chase in 2024
Gray never quite looked right after a foot injury sidelined her in the 2023 WNBA Finals
and Young played through an undisclosed injury after her Team USA gold medal contest to play in only six games during the Unrivaled season
Both stars were in fine form in their preseason debuts
Young showcased her trademark bowling-ball style getting into the paint
She had a career night drawing contact and earning foul shots
who was second among rotation guards in free-throw rate in 2024
Young also had nine assists and no turnovers
showing off sterling playmaking in transition; Las Vegas broadcaster Krista Blunk inadvertently attributed one of Young’s outlet passes to Gray out of habit
including two from her sweet spot in the midrange that had to be especially dispiriting for Joyner Holmes and DiJonai Carrington

— Las Vegas Aces (@LVAces) May 2, 2025
As the Aces figure out their second unit with the offseason departures of Alysha Clark
they will need to rely on their elite star power to remain in the championship picture
Wilson and Young were on the court against Dallas (about 20 minutes of game time)
Coach Chris Koclanes said before the game that the Wings knew who their top eight rotation players would be in 2025, but he hoped to use the preseason to sort out Nos. 9 through 12. Those eight include the five starters — Paige Bueckers
NaLyssa Smith and Teaira McCowan — plus Myisha Hines-Allen
Maddy Siegrist and Tyasha Harris off the bench
That leaves four spots for 10 other training camp players
two of whom (McKenzie Forbes and Kiki Herbert Harrigan) were already waived after the preseason loss to Las Vegas
making Aziaha James the first guard off the bench
and the NC State rookie was aggressive immediately
Her first two scores didn’t even require dribbles
as she hit a catch-and-shoot 3-pointer and a layup on a cut
She forced two dead-ball turnovers in one-on-one defense and even had a steal on the reigning MVP
which she turned into an assist to Siegrist
James also gave up her body attempting to take a charge on Wilson; Koclanes said he should have challenged the blocking call
James’ place on the opening night roster is likely already secure
but the all-around effort in her debut should help her earn more minutes
Zaza ➡️ Maddy pic.twitter.com/f2lGu5Xhtz
— Dallas Wings (@DallasWings) May 2, 2025
A rookie who is closer to the roster bubble is JJ Quinerly
Quinerly looked as comfortable as she was on Big 12 courts in her first WNBA action
Quinerly helped James force a travel on Gray and got a stop on Loyd in transition
There are questions about Quinerly’s height; listed at 5 feet 8
she is likely shorter and was blocked on her first rim shot attempt by 6-foot Aaliyah Nye
JJ’s 16 pts had us on our feet 🤩 pic.twitter.com/sfzDPChInu
— Dallas Wings (@DallasWings) May 3, 2025
The Wings likely need more frontcourt depth in their final 12
especially as McCowan and Smith struggled defensively against the Aces
The Seattle Storm played their only official preseason game Sunday afternoon against the Connecticut Sun
2 pick Dominique Malonga — key members of Seattle’s core — were ruled out for rest
Nneka Ogwumike and Skylar Diggins — opened the game with great energy
holding Connecticut to only 12 first-quarter points
Ogwumike’s and Diggins’ efficiency resulted in a combined 27 points on 9-of-14 shooting in Seattle’s 79-59 victory
but the 34-year-old forward also made four 3-pointers in 21 minutes
She has made at least four 3s just three times since being the No
If she steps out and scores from beyond the arc this season
Seattle’s offense should be even more dangerous
Coach Noelle Quinn will have plenty of frontcourt rotation options with Malonga
Add in Li Yueru — who had 15 points and 10 rebounds in her preseason debut with the Storm — and their frontcourt is one of the league’s deepest

This weekend was a homecoming for both Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese
Reese and the Chicago Sky made their 2025 WNBA preseason debut on Friday in Baton Rouge
the Indiana Fever took the court at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday
Both teams took on the Brazilian National Team in their respective exhibition games — and beat them soundly

That homecoming game for Clark sold out 45 minutes after tickets went on sale and were going for hundreds of dollars on the resale market. The arena was packed with Fever and Hawkeye fans who came to watch the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year play ball.
the Sky's game against Brazil on LSU's campus drew a more modest attendance of 6,373
so there were a lot of noticeably empty seats
Several fans on social media pointed out the attendance and ticket sales gap between the two games. So that's when Angel Reese's mom — also named Angel Reese — jumped on X to defend her daughter and to throw shade at Clark's fans
"Aww that certain fan base looking in the stands celebrating ‘attendance’ while others are looking up in the rafters celebrating championship banners
referring to the 2023 National Championship game
where Reese's LSU Tigers defeated Clark's Iowa Hawkeyes
That's when the rivalry between these two hoopers was born
So get the popcorn ready: The Fever and Sky will face off in their regular season opener on May 17 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis

The WNBA season tips off on May 16
and bettors are already diving into which player could be named the league's MVP
In 2024, Vegas' A'ja Wilson won the W's most coveted individual award after averaging 26.9 points
But with the start of the season on the horizon, Indiana's Caitlin Clark — not Wilson — is at the top of the board to win the award in 2025
Let's dive into the latest odds at BetMGM as of May 5
Caitlin Clark is the favorite to be named WNBA MVP in 2025
In 2024 — her inaugural pro season — Clark averaged 19.2 points
But Wilson — a three-time MVP and widely regarded as the league's best player — is not far behind at +210
In addition to adding the W's MVP hardware to her trophy case last year
Wilson dazzled as part of the Olympic team that won Gold in Paris and was also named MVP of the international tournament
Minnesota's Napheesa Collier rounds out the top three at +325
Another name bettors might want to watch is Breanna Stewart at +1200. Stewie has been named league MVP twice in her career — once in 2018 as a part of the Seattle Storm and then in 2023 as part of the Liberty

It’s been a month since I last used my weekly column space to discuss the on-field status of the Orioles
it was too early to make serious judgments
The Orioles are a fifth of the way through the season and … they’re still not a good baseball team
Their .687 OPS is in the bottom half of the league
And it’s unbelievably barely above .500 against left-handed pitching
.502 is actually higher than I expected it to be
The Orioles’ team ERA is worse than every team in the big leagues besides the Marlins
Their opponents’ batting average actually IS worse than the Marlins
although the Rockies and their elevation prevent them from being in dead last
my question was whether the Orioles’ slow start was an extension of their 42-46 slump to the finish line last year
I’m not sure that’s really a question any longer
This isn’t a team that caught in a funk and just needs to snap out of it
It’s a fundamentally flawed team and has been for some time
the Orioles are only 20 percent through the season
they’ll match the 19-31 start the 2019 Nationals famously got off to before going on to win the World Series
Last year’s Detroit Tigers were eight games under .500 on Aug
But just because there’s precedent for teams dramatically turning things around in the middle of the season
that doesn’t mean we can assume this team somehow will
What would make us believe there’s a path to fixing this
Zach Eflin appears to be on the cusp of returning
If Tomoyuki Sugano can sustain his success and Eflin is as good as he was before being sidelined
Dean Kremer’s seven shutout innings against the Royals May 2 were downright miraculous by Orioles standards
Perhaps you’ve heard that Kremer has a history of being a good bit better after May 1 than he is before May 1 …
Dean Kremer is a much different pitcher after April
he has a 3.52 ERA and 1.252 WHIP.If the Orioles get the latter the remainder of the season
it would be a massive boost to the rotation
two and a half starters when Eflin gets back
at least Félix Bautista looks like Félix Bautista again
Jackson Holliday is finally showing prolonged signs of being Jackson Holliday
He is hitting .341/.449/.561 since April 16
Gunnar Henderson is similarly showing signs of being Gunnar Henderson again
Jordan Westburg and Tyler O’Neill are on the cusp of returning
Will any of that fix their grotesque performance against lefties
After the Rangers fired offensive coordinator Donnie Ecker on Sunday
quite a few Orioles fans wondered if perhaps hitting coach Cody Asche might meet the same fate soon
But we know that’s not the scalp the most bloodthirsty of Orioles fans want
Is it time to have the Brandon Hyde conversation? Depends who you ask. And I’m doing lots of asking. CBS Sports MLB analyst David Samson, a former front office executive with the Marlins and Expos, thinks it is
While acknowledging the Orioles’ struggles aren’t Hyde’s fault
Samson is of the belief that they “have to” fire him
“I think this new owner is going to have to make a change,” he told me
“I’m sorry for Brandon because I know him well and I’ve worked with him in my career
But there is something going on in Baltimore that if you’re the new owner David [Rubenstein]
Samson actually thinks the Orioles should do it before Memorial Day because they need as much of the season as possible on the other side of the managerial change
Not everyone agrees. FOX Sports MLB analyst and two-time All-Star catcher A.J. Pierzynski asked the obvious follow-up
“Does firing him change anything?” Pierzynski asked rhetorically
it’s the same position players.”
So what would actually make things any different for a hypothetical managerial replacement
I’m still probably closer to Pierzynski’s opinion than I am Samson’s
despite joining the chorus of confusion as to why Charlie Morton appeared in a two-run game May 4
I’ve thought Memorial Day was the first appropriate time to consider that option and I’m not ready to move off of that
My gut tells me the Orioles are pretty much the same no matter who the manager might be the rest of the way
But I understand this is how baseball works
Hopefully something … anything … changes between now and then

The 23-year-old has turned into a global icon for the sport
and Brazil's head coach Leo Figueiro made sure she knew so during the game:
"You're an amazing player," he told Clark as she walked towards their bench
You've changed the history of basketball."

before asking: "Most people you've played in front of?"
"Yeah," Figueiro answered with a smile
Clark finished Sunday's exhibition with a game-high 16 points that included a ridiculous three-pointer from the same spot where she broke the NCAA's all-time scoring record
Sunday was the Fever's second of three preseason games before kicking off the 2025 regular season
They open their campaign this coming Saturday
and the Chicago Sky from Indiana's Gainbridge Field House
Iowa — A day that started with Caitlin Clark’s triumphant return to Carver-Hawkeye Arena ended with the WNBA basking in the spotlight
No Iowa athlete in the last 80 years can match Clark’s impact
and that was on full display from the parking lot tailgates four hours before tipoff to the 117-decibel explosion when she connected on her first 3-pointer Sunday afternoon
Tickets for Indiana Fever’s exhibition — a 108-44 win against the Brazilian national team — sold out in 24 minutes and nearly every row in the 14,998-seat arena featured a No

“I felt like a Hawkeye today,” Mitchell said
It was good connecting back with college students from walking across the campus yesterday
but they’re also going to be here cheering for you and our entire team
I think that’s what’s so great about these fans
is they really rally around the entire team.”
It’s not an unprecedented move for the WNBA to play exhibitions on college campuses
the Las Vegas Aces and A’ja Wilson played one at South Carolina
the Brazilian national team competed against the Chicago Sky at LSU
which Sky forward Angel Reese led to the 2023 national title
Iowa ranked second in NCAA women’s basketball attendance in each of the last two seasons
and the second of which didn’t involve Clark
the Hawkeyes sold out every home game and nearly every road environment
She became the most popular athlete in college sports and the Hawkeyes’ NCAA championship loss to South Carolina picked up 18.9 million viewers — 4.1 million more than the men’s championship game that year
it’s natural for the WNBA to bring its product to Iowa City
Iowa women’s basketball fans immediately followed the Fever when Clark became the No
Interest in the WNBA soared with fans buying subscriptions to the league’s app to watch the Fever and other teams
summer sports conversations that once revolved around the Chicago Cubs or St
Louis Cardinals shifted to the Fever or Las Vegas Aces
which former Hawkeyes Megan Gustafson and Kate Martin called home last year
Hundreds of Iowa fans traveled to Minnesota last August to watch a Friday-Saturday doubleheader featuring the Lynx playing the Aces and Fever
Many others have made the trip to Indianapolis
But that’s not the same as seeing the teams at home
The Fever coming to Iowa City as a testament to Clark’s popularity acknowledged the interest and can pay major dividends for the team and the league
“We have great college basketball fan bases throughout the country that deserve an opportunity to witness these women doing what they do at the highest level,” said Fever coach Stephanie White
who played at Purdue and has broadcast numerous games at Carver-Hawkeye Arena
“I love these kinds of environments and opportunities for our team
for our league and to bring special talents back home.”
Fever shooting guard Lexie Hull rocked a Clark Iowa No
22 T-shirt to the arena as a nod to her teammate and friend
I was so excited to see it firsthand,” Hull said
you see all the clips or you see the decal on the floor
but being here is a whole different story.”

Clark was the star attraction and hundreds of youngsters mobbed her after the game for autographs just like when she was a student
She scored 16 points and donned the exact Nike brand Bruce Lee Kobes like she did for every big Iowa game
But her Fever uniform contains a splash of red
which serves as a metaphorical connection that the future isn’t just black-and-gold for Iowa’s WNBA fans
“Just the way that Caitlin has not only gotten Iowa people together
it’s just amazing,” Fever forward Sophie Cunningham said
“For us to come back and have them celebrate where she’s at
I think that’s such a smart move for Iowa and the WNBA
but also let’s bring them home so people can celebrate them at the pro level

Caitlin Clark hasn't missed a beat as a long-range shooter at Carver-Hawkeye Arena
The Indiana Fever star made four of her first six attempts from 3-point range Sunday in an exhibition game vs
The fourth 3-pointer ignited the Iowa City crowd as Clark unleashed the shot from beyond the logo − 36 feet away from the hoop
The former Hawkeyes star celebrated near the ESPN broadcast table and acknowledged fans after the shot
The basket was reminiscent of the shot Clark took to break the NCAA career scoring record in 2024
The location of that shot is marked with a "22 Clark" logo on the floor
Clark is battling a left leg injury that kept her out of Saturday's preseason game against Washington
She was cleared to play in Sunday's game and had 16 points in about 19 minutes through three quarters

She was cleared to play Sunday but she's expected to top out around 20 or 25 minutes
A sellout crowd enthusiastically cheered for the Fever during the first half of Sunday's game
Here's a look at Clark's statistics through the first two quarters

Caitlin Clark missed the Fever's exhibition opener Saturday because of a left leg injury
but she is expected to play Sunday when Indiana takes on the Brazil national team at the University of Iowa (4 p.m
Clark initially was listed as questionable for Saturday's game against the Washington Mystics and warmed up before tipoff in Indianapolis
But she was announced as out just before the game started and watched from the bench as the Fever won 79-74 in overtime
Veteran free agent signee Sydney Colson started in place of Clark
and other Fever players spent time at point guard
Coach Stephanie White noted how Clark was very active on the bench talking to her teammates and the staff during the game
"Her communication was outstanding," White said
and I felt like at one point she wanted to go back and put her uniform on and come out and play
she's had a lot of progress in the last 24 hours
We'll see what happens and how she feels after the workouts that she went through today
a first-team All-WNBA pick and Rookie of the Year last season
played in all 40 regular-season games and both playoff games in 2024
Clark never missed a game in her four seasons at Iowa (2020-24)
where she became the all-time Division I scoring leader
More than 13 months after her final game there as a college at Iowa, Caitlin Clark once again got the chance to thrill the crowd at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City
It was the second of three preseason games for the Fever
Clark had missed Indiana’s preseason game Saturday against the Washington Mystics with a left leg injury
but logged 19 minutes and made six of her 10 shots
The reigning WNBA rookie of the year was one of four starters from a new-look Fever team to finish in double figures
Kelsey Mitchell had a game-high 17 points and three steals
Indiana made 15 of its 33 3-pointers (45.5%) and forced 26 Brazil turnovers
The Fever will wrap up its preseason on Saturday with a matchup against the Atlanta Dream before their regular-season opener on May 17 against Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky
Here are updates and highlights from the Fever's blowout victory against Brazil:
REQUIRED READING: 'It sold out in 45 minutes.' Iowa can't wait to celebrate Caitlin Clark homecoming
including a 4-of-6 mark from 3-point range
the Fever looked like a much-improved squad from what it was a year ago when Clark was a rookie
rolling past the Brazilian national team 108-44
Kelsey Mitchell led all players with 17 points and three steals while Clark had 16 points and a game-high five assists in her return to Carver-Hawkeye Arena
While Indiana's win was just an exhibition game against an overmatched opponent
it's worth noting Brazil lost to the Chicago Sky by 27 points on Friday
With Clark likely on the bench for the rest of the afternoon
the Fever is up 90-35 on the Brazilian national team
Indiana has dominated in every facet of the game
holding Brazil to just 25% shooting and forcing its opponent into 19 turnovers
On what was likely her final play of the afternoon
with the Fever up by 52 late in the third quarter
Clark crossed halfcourt and proceeded to pull up to swish a 35-foot 3-pointer from only about a foot behind where she broke the NCAA Division I women's basketball career scoring record in 2024 during her senior season at Iowa
Clark's deepest 3 during her rookie season with the Fever was 32.5 feet
For as much excitement as there was about Clark's return to Iowa
the Fever is having its way with the Brazilian national team
Indiana is 24 of 42 from the field (57.1%)
including a ridiculous 12 of 18 from 3-point range (66.7%)
After grabbing her fifth rebound of the day
Clark immediately turned her eyes up court and tossed an outlet pass to a streaking DeWanna Bonner
who caught it in stride and got a layup to extend the Fever's lead to 40 points
It was the second assist of the day for Clark
Fever up 20 on Brazil at end of first quarterCaitlin Clark and the Fever are having no problems with the Brazilian national team through the opening 10 minutes
A Clark transition 3-pointer pushed Indiana's lead to 20
Clark has six points and has made two of her three 3s in seven minutes
The Fever stretched its first-quarter lead to 15 points in style
with Sydney Colson finding Natasha Howard with a deft behind-the-back pass on a 2-on-1 fast break for an easy layup
In what’s undoubtedly a familiar sight for the thousands crammed into Carver-Hawkeye Arena
Caitlin Clark made her first shot of the day
coming off a screen and appearing to absorb some contact to drain a 3-pointer from the top of the key for the first points of the game
In the hours leading up to the Fever’s game against Brazil
there had still been a question of whether Caitlin Clark’s Iowa homecoming would include her actually playing in the game
On that front, the home fans in Iowa City got some good news, as Clark was listed as available on the Fever’s pregame availability report
Clark missed the Fever’s preseason opener against the Washington Mystics with a left leg injury
something Clark described as “a little bit of tightness.” She went through warmups with the team and wasn’t wearing a brace
"She had a lot of progress in the last 24 hours, and that was our goal," Fever coach Stephanie White said Saturday
"Our goal is to see how she progresses every day
so we'll see what happens and see how she feels after the workouts that she went through today
and then hopefully she'll be ready tomorrow."

2025 8:55 AM EDTCaitlin Clark is hardly the only competitive person in her family
The Indiana Fever star and reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year had her fair share of on-court issues during her rookie campaign
racking up six technical fouls - just one away from a mandatory one-game suspension
As it turns out that competitive spirit might just come from her father
Clark's father admitted in an interview that he
“I was a pretty emotional player,” he said
“I even recall fights in a couple of games
Caitlin and I see a lot of me in her in that way
but I think she does a much better job of controlling her emotion
but she has the presence of mind not to react when someone says something or does something to her
I wish I had a little bit more of that maturity when I was at Simpson.”
Fast forward eight months and the Fever were back out on the court - and Clark's dad was back in the headlines
was interviewed during her game against Brazil back in Iowa City
During his conversation with ESPN sideline reporter Holly Rowe
Clark was asked what her learned about being a WNBA parent for the first time
He immediately called out the officiating from around the league
I think there's a lot of room for improvement there
I've kind of noticed a little bit of a difference [on Sunday]
it looks like they're really officiating the game like it should be officiated," he said plainly
people are going to like the product even more than it is right now."
complained quite about the officiating several times during her rookie campaign
but didn't have any complaints following the team's 108-44 victory on May 4 in the preseason showdown
May 4, 2025 2:00 PM EDTIndiana Fever star Caitlin Clark made it a point to get stronger this offseason after WNBA veterans attempted to bully her during her standout rookie season
I think that was the biggest thing for myself
While she certainly got stronger this offseason, Clark still managed to suffer an injury that kept her out of the team's preseason debut on May 3 - much to the chagrin of WNBA fans everywhere.
The injury announcement seemed like more of a precaution
allowing Clark some grace before her first true game of the season
She and the Fever are back on the court today
for an international friendly against Brazil back in Clark's old stomping grounds in Iowa City
Ahead of the game Clark was spotted in an all-gray outfit that caught the attention of social media
"The fit is [fire emoji]," one fan said
"She looks goooddddd," said another
"The people asking if she is playing need to stop
They held her out of yesterday's game TO MAKE SURE SHE COULD PLAY TODAY IN CARVER
Freak injuries happen and how bad would it be if she played the 1 game they have before the Carver game and she gets hurt and can't play in IC?" offered another
hoping to calm the fears of those wondering if she'll miss another game
Caitlin Clark makes her on-court return to Carver-Hawkeye Arena today as her Indiana Fever plays a preseason game against the Brazilian National Team in Iowa City

one had to look long and hard to identify Zaydrius Rainey-Sale
He was the one guy among the 94 who gathered for last Friday's closing proceedings
who hasn't played a snap of college ball yet
The freshman linebacker was that person in the short hair and thick glasses
which was sort of an conservative if not studious look for him
The 6-foot-3 225-pound Rainey Sale from Bethel High School in suburban Tacoma -- recovering from a schoolboy knee injury and surgery that forced him to miss all of spring ball -- by all accounts is hardly a boring guy
and the room lights up because he’s in it,” UW linebackers coach Brian Odom said
He’s thirsting for knowledge of the scheme
"If he plays half as good as he prepares right now
walking behind quarterback Demond Williams Jr
his spring game appearance was more than a little surprising because during his intense recruitment Rainey-Sale gave off sort of a hipster vibe
his 4-star recruit sneer unmistakable in photos shoots from Florida State to Montlake
While he's bigger than all of the other UW scholarship linebackers and has a reputation for physicality
the newcomer in his bookish appearance at Husky Stadium looked like he could out-study you to death
Or he was doing his best Clark Kent impersonation
/ UW Rainey-Sale was one of about a dozen players who didn't play in the two-hour spring finale
coach Jedd Fsich said he expected each and every one of them
to be ready to go in three months for fall camp
That'll give Rainey-Sale plenty of time to ditch the glasses and resume a somewhat scary personna to match his football reputation

playCaitlin Clark: 'The vibes are really good' with the new coach and teammates (0:56)Caitlin Clark says it has been a learning process with her new coach and teammates
but she highlights the team's strong physicality and pace heading into the season
Given her tremendous college career and record-setting rookie year
will be contending for the league's highest individual honor in just her second season -- but it's her immense popularity with the betting public that truly pushed her to favorite status
a result of massive betting action behind her: Several major sportsbooks report at least 50% of tickets supporting her MVP campaign and a lot of the bigger money is also buying in
with ESPN BET topping out at 77.7% of its MVP handle share backing the Iowa Hawkeyes legend
It's the culmination of years of ardent fan support
which sportsbooks have grown accustomed to and prepared for
"The thing about Clark is that she just draws a lot of money no matter what [odds] we put her up at," DraftKings sportsbook director Johnny Avello told ESPN
so I don't think we're going to get hurt too bad [if she ends up winning]."
Avello acknowledges that the sportsbook's Clark liability could increase as the season goes on and the pot gets larger
Where he and other bookmakers are more concerned is the growing hazard on the Fever as a whole
with ESPN BET director of North American sports trading Adrian Horton previously calling them the book's "biggest liability by a wide margin."
Indiana's ascendency after a big offseason that saw it acquire key players DeWanna Bonner and Natasha Howard
"A'ja Wilson's team won so many games more than the Fever and Clark
I think this year it's just going to be relatively close in the standings
which helps Clark's case," Caesars Sportsbook pro basketball lead David Lieberman told ESPN
"They're expected to be a top-three team in the league
which gives Clark a perfectly good opportunity to snag the MVP."
the preseason favorite has gone on to win the award every season; Clark would have the second-shortest odds to win
Clark won 2024's Rookie of the Year after entering the campaign with astoundingly short -750 odds. The 2025 favorite is significantly longer than that, but is still odds-on, as Dallas Wings first-year player Bueckers shows -225 at ESPN BET
have all been first overall draft selections
While it's not quite as fervent as the support Clark always seems to receive
Bueckers has gotten robust backing at several sportsbooks
with both Caesars and DraftKings reporting heavy action on her
"The bettors know Bueckers and so that's who they're isolating on as the season starts and goes on," Avello said
but at this point it's been all Bueckers."
One player who could provide a real challenge to Bueckers is second overall draft pick Dominique Malonga of the Seattle Storm
skill and professional experience in her native France make her an intriguing flier for many bettors
as ESPN BET reports 44.4% of bets and a huge 70.9% of handle backing her for Rookie of the Year
but maybe Malonga will put up absurd rebound numbers and blocks and stuff like that to inch her a lot closer to Bueckers in the Rookie of the Year race than maybe people were expecting."
Lieberman clarifies that although Chicago Sky star Angel Reese made the 2024 race competitive with excellent defensive metrics
he believes Clark's all-around performance put her over the top
It remains to be seen how that will play out between the top two candidates in 2025
It seems like forever ago since she last played here – even though it’s only been 13½ months, since Iowa outlasted West Virginia in a second-round NCAA Tournament game in late March of 2024.
Now, Clark was set to play as a second-year Indiana Fever guard before a sold-out crowd at Carver-Hawkeye with an ESPN national audience watching her team’s May 4 exhibition game against the Brazil National Team. Indiana opens the regular season May 17 against the Chicago Sky, so this was a tune-up – and Clark’s first exhibition after she sat out the day before against the Washington Mystics.
What did she have in store for her adoring fans at Iowa, where she made four years of memories including two national title-game runs?
“I certainly give the fans something to cheer about. That's my goal. Get them involved. Get them loud,” Clark said. “Because, I told my teammates, it's going to be the loudest arena you’ve ever played in. So, I’ve got to make a few shots and be able to get them on their feet.”
Here are some other topics Clark addressed in her pregame media availability.
“One of the best parts about the fan base is it’s not a one player thing. It was the same thing during my time at Iowa. You go down the roster, and they loved every single girl on the team, whether they played 40 minutes a night or whether they never got in the game.”
“This is an opportunity for us to really work on ourselves and build chemistry and get better.”
What Clark said about her expected playing time“I just love to compete at the end of the day. This is a building that I'm very comfortable playing in, a fan base I love playing in front of.”
“A lot of those games were high-intensity games, I was playing 40 minutes. I won't be playing 40 minutes, shockingly. As a competitor, those are the moments you live for, when the spotlight’s on.”
What Clark said about her new team and coach Stephanie White“Some of the things we do defensively is completely different than how they were taught last year. And that's not a bad thing by any means. It's just you have to break some habits, and that's going to take some time. … So, I think it's just continuing to build chemistry, trying to get lineups on the floor, different lineups on the floor that work.”
(Of note, this was her first full professional offseason after going straight from college to the WNBA last April)
“I think just consistency, that's what it was for me. Like I hadn't had six or seven months to just be consistent in everything that I did, whether that was on court skill development, whether that was how I ate, whether (it was) being in the weight room.
“I think that has led me to look a little bigger. We'll see if it helps, I don’t know, that remains to be seen. But it's worked in our workouts so far. But I think just from a stamina standpoint … it's going to help me feel better by game 40 to 44 and then the playoffs, the most important time of the year. It’s physical, refs tend to swallow their whistle.”
Clark on when she noticed Carver-Hawkeye first really come to life“I would probably say my sophomore year, when we played Michigan, was our first sellout. We're playing for the Big Ten regular-season title. … Nobody really expected us to win the Big Ten that year.
“I think that was probably the real first point. I was like, ‘Wow, this is special,’ and I still have two more years to be here and enjoy this. And we certainly, every year, elevated it and elevated it, even when I didn't know if we could continue to do that with how much success we had and how great our fans were. But they continued to show up.”
“Somehow it feels like the pressure is always taken to another level and another level. But I always remind myself, it’s not a moment I haven’t been in before. I understand the expectations, I understand the pressure, and … I wouldn't want that any other way. I like to embrace that. There's going to be nights that are great. There's going to be nights that you struggle a little bit. It's just how you respond.”
“You live your life completely different than you were in college, like you're a pro. You have to take care of yourself, you have to watch film. You have to get in and do treatment, whatever it is. So I think that was the biggest adjustment in Year 1. ... But really more than anything, just embracing it.”

In the initial moments of her return to Iowa’s Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Caitlin Clark drifted left off a screen and rattled down a 3-pointer from the center court Hawkeye logo. It was her first possession of her preseason debut, and her first shot back inside the arena at which she captivated college basketball as she wrote a new chapter of history for women’s sports.
“I love to compete at the end of the day,” Clark said pregame. “But also, this is a building I’m very comfortable playing in.”
Clark broke the NCAA’s all-time scoring record in Carver-Hawkeye, earning a stamp on the arena’s hardwood in her honor. Her No. 22 sits on the exact spot that she shot the record-breaking basket from – a forever reminder of the one-of-one player that thrilled the sold-out crowds of Iowa City before her Fever career.
Now, back on Iowa’s campus to kickstart her second year campaign, Clark dazzled the crowd once again. She recorded 13 points, five rebounds, and two assists in the first half to lead the Fever to a 70-point total at halftime.
Clark was on a mission to put on a show for her Iowa City fans, stating before the contest that she told her Fever teammates that Carver-Hawkeye would be the loudest arena they’d ever played in. Her first bucket earned a pop of energy from the crowd, and that reaction snowballed with each consecutive basket by Clark.
But those cheers rained down for her teammates, too. Kelsey Mitchell knocked down a 3-pointer directly following Clark’s opening basket, and Carver-Hawkeye erupted with the same enthusiasm it had for Clark.
“I think it’s really good for our fans that might not have a chance to go see us play in the [WNBA],” Clark said of WNBA games played in college arenas. “…I think it gives them a great opportunity to come and cheer for us, and also see a team they’ve probably watched on TV quite a few times.
“I’ve told my teammates they’re going to be here cheering for me, yes, but they’re also going to be here cheering for you and our entire team. And I think that’s what’s so great about these fans is they really rally around the entire team, it’s not just myself.”
Clark finished her preseason debut with 16 points, six rebounds, and five assists. She made six of her 10 shots – 60 percent from the field, including 67 percent from beyond the arc.
But the most memorable of Clark’s moments on Sunday afternoon came at the end of the third quarter as she raced up the floor with under a minute remaining in the period. She took three dribbles, eyed up her signature logo, and launched a 3-pointer from beyond it.
Her 36-footer didn’t touch the rim as it sailed through the bottom of the net.
As she embarks on her second year as a pro, Clark clings to her time at Iowa.
“Those are some of the best memories I have in my entire life,” she said of her days playing in a Hawkeye uniform. “So just soak it in and enjoy it.”
She gave Iowa City something to enjoy on Sunday, leading a ferocious Fever charge to a 108-44 victory in their second preseason contest. The reigning Rookie of the Year returned to her alma mater and gave her fans more memories in the arena that is now synonymous with her name.
Clark sat down on the bench following her final minutes of action, and holding out her hands in a heart, she showed her love to the people that supported her on the campus that built her.
