Fish and Wildlife Service proposed to list the Clear Lake hitch as threatened under the Endangered Species Act
the Service is proposing a 4(d) rule for activities that will have a conservation benefit for the species
Critical habitat will be proposed at a later date
The Clear Lake hitch is a large freshwater minnow found only in Northern California’s Clear Lake watershed
The silver fish is an important species to local Tribes who call it “Chi” and historically relied on it for food
degradation and modification throughout the Clear Lake watershed are the leading threats to the species
and invasive carp and other non-native fish also contribute to the species’ decline.
“The survey data in Clear Lake has shown a decline in the hitch population over an extended period
but there’s a lot of variability in the population numbers year-to-year due to changes in environmental conditions,” said Michael Fris
field supervisor of the Service’s Sacramento Fish and Wildlife Office
“We will continue to look at all potential factors that could be contributing to the decline of this culturally important species and invest in projects that support the recovery of the hitch.”
the Service determined that proposing the hitch as threatened was warranted
While the species is not currently at risk of extinction
populations of the hitch are likely to continue to decline
putting the species at risk for extinction in the future.
“The Service is committed to helping the Clear Lake hitch recover,” said Fris
we have been working with local partners and agencies to monitor the species and work collaboratively on projects that help restore habitat.”
The Service is also committed to completing a conservation strategy for the hitch
objectives and actions that are needed to improve the species’ habitat
This strategy was developed alongside many partners
federal and local government agencies.
the Service also is proposing a 4(d) rule for the hitch that provides exceptions to the prohibition of take under the Endangered Species Act for activities associated with habitat management and restoration
non-native plant and animal species removal
These activities can prevent further declines in habitat conditions
preserve or improve the resiliency of the remaining populations
or only have negligible impacts to the fish.

The water quality of Clear Lake — California’s largest natural freshwater lake — suffers from low-to-no-oxygen conditions that contribute to harmful algal blooms (HABs) and other issues, according to a report from the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center and the U.S
Clear Lake has long suffered from environmental challenges associated with mercury contamination
which threaten aquatic and human health and the community’s cultural
recreational and economic activities.
The report, submitted to the Blue Ribbon Committee for the Rehabilitation of Clear Lake, outlines the primary causes of deteriorating water conditions at the 63-square-mile lake
It also applies newly developed predictive tools to test restoration strategies and offers actionable recommendations
These include installing a hypolimnetic oxygenation system
a technology that has been used nationwide and in California to enhance oxygen levels at the lake bottom.
conditions near the lake bottom are created by seasonal temperature stratification
where a warm layer of water on top of the lake prevents oxygen from reaching the bottom.
“This anoxic bottom layer is triggering the bad mechanisms in the lake,” said Alicia Cortés
lead UC Davis TERC project scientist for the Clear Lake project
“These conditions cause lake sediments to release nutrients — particularly phosphorus — which can trigger adverse outcomes like HABs
Low oxygen may also harm fish habitat or produce methylmercury — a highly toxic form of mercury.”
TERC recommends implementing hypolimnetic oxygenation systems
These systems aim to enhance oxygen levels in deeper waters to reduce the release of phosphorus from the sediments
reduce methylmercury production and improve overall aquatic health

TERC researchers partnered with the USGS to conduct a multi-year study to understand the dominant processes in Clear Lake and its watershed that are diminishing water quality.
with strong currents that quickly move particles between its basins and frequent mixing events that alter the vertical distribution of temperature
nutrients and harmful algal blooms,” said Alexander Forrest
interim director of TERC and a UC Davis professor in the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
“These water movements need to be accounted for to make any rehabilitation strategy feasible and sustainable in the long run.”
TERC researchers developed a continuous and multidisciplinary monitoring program
with measurements collected every hour for five years
Researchers installed sensors to track water temperatures
oxygen levels and real-time meteorological conditions
TERC researchers also collected hundreds of water samples to quantify nutrients and phytoplankton concentrations
and created a high-resolution bathymetry map of the lake bottom.
Researchers at USGS quantified nutrient and sediment loads entering the lake from the watershed via streams
This is a crucial component of understanding the full system that can influence water quality
These on-site measurements were essential to developing predictive models for Clear Lake and its watershed
These models help reveal the processes degrading water quality
They show how the lake and watershed respond to changing environmental conditions and future restoration strategies
TERC received a $1.1 million grant from the California Natural Resources Agency to support the planning and permitting phase for a prototype of the hypolimnetic oxygenation system and for community outreach
on-site dissolved oxygen measurements near the lake bottom in the Oaks Arm.
The 15-member Blue Ribbon Committee for the Rehabilitation of Clear Lake was created by state legislation in 2017 to propose effective solutions to the decline of water quality at the lake
It includes representatives from local Indigenous tribes

Endangered Species Act Protection Proposed for California’s Clear Lake Hitch
CLEAR LAKE, Calif.— In response to a 2012 petition by the Center for Biological Diversity, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today proposed to protect the Clear Lake hitch — a large minnow found only in Northern California’s Clear Lake and its tributaries — as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act
Clear Lake hitch numbers have declined precipitously as their habitat has been degraded and destroyed
“I’m relieved that strong protections are on the way for these iconic fish who embody the hope for a restored Clear Lake
and whose persistence is so meaningful for indigenous cultures,” said Jeff Miller
a senior conservation advocate at the Center
“The hitch need immediate emergency actions if they’re going to survive
Endangered Species Act protections can help ensure that happens.”
when adults make their way into the streams that connect to Clear Lake to spawn before returning to the lake
Millions of hitch once crowded into the lake’s tributaries during spectacular spawning runs
These masses of hitch were a vital part of the Clear Lake ecosystem and an important food source for numerous birds
Hitch were also a staple food and a cultural mainstay for the original Pomo inhabitants of the region
Now just a few thousand adult fish spawn in a good year
with numbers dipping much lower in recent years
The primary threat to Clear Lake hitch is a lack of water flowing in the tributaries during their spring spawning
that is being worsened by climate change-driven drought
The hitch are also threatened by fish-passage barriers
and predation and competition from invasive fish such as carp and bass
The hitch need emergency action to survive
controlling invasive predatory fish and maintaining adequate water flows
The Clear Lake hitch’s closest relative was the Clear Lake splittail
a fish driven to extinction by the 1970s because of habitat alterations that dried out spawning streams and barriers that prevented their spawning migrations
“Unless stream and wetland habitats are restored and the fish reintroduced into former spawning tributaries
Clear Lake’s hitch may go extinct like the lake’s former splittail population,” Miller said
Clear Lake hitch have adapted to a very brief period of suitable stream conditions for their annual spawning run
the species can’t survive numerous consecutive years of failed spawning
Suitable hitch habitat has been significantly degraded
with an 85% loss of former wetland habitat around Clear Lake critical for juvenile rearing
a 92% loss of historical stream spawning and rearing habitat
Clear Lake Tribes have been leading efforts to restore the hitch and protect their spawning streams and were the first to begin scientific research on habitat conditions and threats to the fish
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife and U.S
Geological Survey now conduct regular hitch surveys
Several fish passage projects have been completed in spawning tributaries and invasive carp are being removed
The Tribes pushed the State Water Resources Control Board to review excessive creek water pumping and groundwater resources in the basin
Tribal and state biologists have been rescuing spawning and juvenile hitch stranded in drying streams
In 2012 the Center petitioned to protect the Clear Lake hitch under both the federal and state endangered species acts
In 2014 the hitch was designated as a threatened species under the California Endangered Species Act
The Center for Biological Diversity is a national
nonprofit conservation organization with more than 1.7 million members and online activists dedicated to the protection of endangered species and wild places

There haven't been many returning Drake Relays champions who have been considered underdogs in their careers
However, that's the exact position Clear Lake senior long jumper Reese Brownlee found herself in against Linn-Mar junior Abby Mecklenburg on April 24
Mecklenburg came to the Relays with an all-time Iowa record of 20-8 1/4
the only Iowa high school girl to ever leap over 20 feet
It was over a foot longer than anybody has reached in 2025 in the field
it was Brownlee who rose to the occasion in Des Moines
securing her second career Drake Relays white flag in the long jump with an 18-10 leap
one-quarter of an inch farther than Mecklenburg
It's the third Drake Relays title of her career
with her previous long jump title and a win in the 400-meter hurdles in 2024
Brownlee had the white flag locked up before her final jump
raising her hands in the air and smiling wide to the cheering crowd inside the Blue Oval before taking one last flight into the sand
Joy was what Brownlee said was key for this monumental win
living by a motto she thinks about while she competes
but finding the joy is the best thing," Brownlee said
'Happy girls run fast and they jump far.' That's what I go by."
She was also quick to point to her competitor
she's done so much for long jump in this state," Brownlee said
Iowa long jump is on the rise because of her."
More: Miciah LeLaCheur's comeback from injury leads to Drake Relays high school long jump title
The Kansas State commit's emotions were high after the win
but for the struggles that came in doing so
She has been battling a hamstring injury all season
jumping only once this year before the Drake Relays
she put her sweatpants over her injured leg
trying to keep her ailing hamstring warm throughout the event
Brownlee has more still in front of her at the Relays
giving her the opportunity to earn as many as six Relays flags in her career by weekend's end
More: Here are the Olympians you'll see compete during the Drake Relays
and being surrounded by Clear Lake fans in the stands and her dad coaching alongside her
it made her third Drake Relays flag that much more special

Clear Lake’s Langston Lee is congratulated by teammates and coaches after scoring during the fourth inning against Clear Creek at Clear Lake High School in Houston on Tuesday
Clear Lake’s Clayton McDonald makes the tag at first base on Clear Creek’s Tyler Sauers during the fifth inning at Clear Lake High School in Houston on Tuesday
Clear Creek’s Cooper Simonds is swarmed by teammates in the dugout after hitting a home run during the second inning against Clear Lake at Clear Lake High School in Houston on Tuesday
Clear Lake baseball players cheer in their batter from the dugout during the third inning against Clear Creek at Clear Lake High School in Houston on Tuesday
The Clear Creek Wildcats missed a chance to put the home team on their heels early
and the rest of Tuesday night’s District 24-6A baseball contest went largely in favor of the hosting Clear Lake Falcons
we didn’t hit well enough,” said Clear Creek head baseball coach Brent Kunefke
whose Wildcats (6-3 in District 24-6A) fell two games back of Clear Lake (8-1) in the league standings with the loss
“A lot of that credit goes to their guy on the mound and their lineup
Clear Creek left two runners stranded in scoring position with one out in the top of the first inning when Tyler Sauers hit a bunt single and Caden Schindler beat out an infield single in consecutive at-bats
and then both runners moved up a base on a balk
and the Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first — successfully taking advantage of a leadoff walk to Zach Tuxhorn
Tuxhorn’s courtesy runner Cameron Nelson went to third base on a Langston Lee double
and then scored on a grounder hit by Clayton McDonald
The Wildcats were able to get the game-tying score with one mighty swing of the bat from Cooper Simonds
who led off the top of the second by drilling a 2-2 offering over the left-field wall
the Falcons were able to pull ahead for good with a two-run bottom of the third that featured a pair of RBI singles from Alex Ervesun and Nolan Klinger for a 3-1 lead
Clear Lake’s biggest offensive inning — a three-run bottom of the fourth — came by way of a massive two-out rally
which started by Tuxhorn extending the inning with a walk
Then came three straight RBI base hits on singles from Lee and Ervesun and a towering double to deep center field from McDonald to make it a 6-1 game
The game’s final run was tallied in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double from Lee
Clear Creek seemed to have the makings of a potential rally in the top of the sixth after Colt Ferraro hit a one-out single and Simonds followed with what appeared to be a double lined fair down the left-field line
Falcons starting pitcher Lance Kenney picked up a complete-game win on the mound with six hits
two walks and five strikeouts in seven innings of work
Offensive standouts for Clear Lake were Ervesun (3-for-4
who reached base in all four plate appearances with a single
Nelson scored four times running the bases for the catcher Tuxhorn
“We’ve got to come out and prepare a little better
We’ve got to have a little more focus — all those things that come into play with sports

DES MOINES — MOC-Floyd Valley made their fans sweat during the Class 3A state championship game at the Iowa boys state basketball tournament Friday
The Dutchmen nearly let a 23-point lead slip away against No
claiming the second state championship in program history with a dramatic 58-57 victory
but I know it will," said MOC-Floyd Valley forward Owen Vander Pol
It's been 20 years to the year that we (last) won it
MOC-Floyd Valley used a blistering shooting performance to build a 47-24 lead during the third quarter
The Dutchmen shot 74% from the field in the first half and they opened the second half on a 10-2 run
But Clear Lake had come back from double digits to defeat Adel-Desoto-Minburn
More: Iowa high school boys state basketball tournament 2025: Scores, bracket updates daily
The Lions ramped up an aggressive full-court press
got clutch 3-point shooting from Carson Riser and Trevor Theobald
and another electrifying performance from all-state forward Thomas Meyer to quickly start chipping away at MOC-Floyd Valley's big advantage
Riser hit a 3-pointer with 3:22 left in the fourth quarter to get Clear Lake within eight points
the first time the Lions had been within single digits since late in the second quarter
Titan Schmitt hit 1 of 2 free throws and then Jaxson McIntire scored off a steal to suddenly close the gap to one possession
After Carter Van Gelder hit two free throws with 23 seconds left
Meyer answered with a pair of foul shots and then Theobald drained a 3-pointer in the final seconds to pull Clear Lake within one
MOC-Floyd Valley got the ball to its star player — senior guard Blake Aalbers
Aalbers was the quarterback on the MOC-Floyd Valley football team
and he instinctively chucked the ball down the floor to run out the final seconds and bring home the school's first state championship since 2005
"It was just kind of instinct," Aalbers said
so I better just chuck it down court.' It was perfect because it stayed in bounds and it just kind of ended the game."
Aalbers was named the 3A all-tournament team captain
averaged 21 points for the tournament and hit the game-winning 3-pointer in the final seconds during MOC-Floyd Valley's 44-41 semifinal win over Cedar Rapids Xavier on Thursday
it was a total team effort that got the job done for the Dutchmen
who finished the season 23-4 and claimed the state title as the No
Vander Pol had 13 points and five rebounds in the title game before fouling out
Ahman Langton and Draeden Punt each added 11 points and Van Gelder finished with six points and four rebounds
"We have talked about every day that each individual give their best so our team can be our best
and maybe it would result in being the best," said legendary MOC-Floyd Valley coach Loren De Jong
who also coached the school's 2005 state championship team and now has 616 victories in 35 years of coaching
MOC-Floyd Valley's win prevented Clear Lake from finishing undefeated
the Lions did not have any reason to hang their heads
Their comeback attempt was one for the ages
Meyer finished the championship game with 19 points
Riser hit 4 of 8 3-pointers and totaled 14 points
Theobald posted six and Max Larson added four to go along with five rebounds
"I'm just really thankful to have this time with these guys," Meyer said

Thomas Meyer refused to let top seed Clear Lake lose during its Class 3A semifinal game against Adel-Desoto-Minburn at the IHSAA boys state basketball tournament Thursday
Meyer led Clear Lake on a 27-8 run during the fourth quarter to overcome a 10-point deficit and advance to Friday's 3A state championship game with a 66-57 victory over the Tigers
"We've got one more and hopefully we can win that too."
Meyer scored 12 of his game-high 31 points during the fourth-quarter comeback
He opened the quarter with a dunk and added 10 more points
including a big three-point conversion to pull his team within five with 5:03 left and a basket with 1:14 left that gave Clear Lake its first lead since 23-22 early in the second quarter
"This could've been my last one," Meyer said
Meyer ended up 13 of 17 from the field and 5 of 7 from the line
Max Larson also played well during Clear Lake's decisive run in the fourth quarter
Trevor Theobald hit a 3-pointer and Larson followed with a basket to cut ADM's 51-41 lead to five early in the quarter
Larson scored a basket off a feed from Meyer to tie the game at 57-57
and his offensive rebound led to Meyer's go-ahead basket with just over one minute left
Larson also hit two big free throws with 31 seconds left to put Clear Lake up 63-57 and help ice the game for the Lions
Larson had eight points and four rebounds in the game
Titan Schmitt seven and Theobald five to help keep the Lions undefeated at 26-0
The Tigers did what they wanted for most of the first three quarters
but they could not solve Clear Lake's defense over the final eight minutes
"They were playing harder than us," said ADM point guard Trey Bryte
They were getting offensive rebounds and pressuring us up on offense
We kind of just fell apart and their players made plays."
Hudson Lorensen and unsung hero Cade Fisher did a great job setting the tone for ADM until the fourth quarter
The Tigers used a 17-4 run to move in front in the third quarter
They led by eight at the half and by as many as 11 points in the third quarter
ADM still held a 10-point lead following a Lorensen basket off an inbounds feed from Bryte early in the fourth quarter before Clear Lake went on its big run
For the game Clear Lake shot 56% from the field to 46% for ADM
The Lions had nine turnovers to the Tigers' 12
and they held a 25-24 rebounding advantage
An 8-4 advantage in 3-point baskets and 17-12 edge in free-throw attempts helped ADM control the game until the fourth quarter
The Tigers finished runner-up to Ballard in the Raccoon River Conference and knocked off No
5 Storm Lake and standout recruit Jaidyn Coon
"At the beginning of the year I don't think anybody thought we were going to make it this far
It was something special just making it (to state) and having a crowd behind us to beat Storm Lake to make it all the way here."

CLEAR LAKE — Anglers hope fish are biting again on Clear Lake for the 38th Annual New Ulm Area Sport Fishermen Ice Fishing Contest Sunday
“The DNR (Department of Natural Resources) stocked the lake with sunfish
People have seen crappies in the lake,” he said
Hulke said he feels pretty good about ice thickness this year
“The Brown County Sheriff said lake ice was at least 17 inches last week
but people should wear ice cleats or ice grippers,” he said
the lake ice was not nearly as thick so the event was held on land
a large crowd of people fished within the first hour of the contest and many fish were caught including perch
Hulke said contest-goers can park on the lake
along the road to it or on one side of the nearby township road
“Some people may come just for the food
“We stress catch and release after fish are weighed,” said Hulke
the New Ulm Area Sport Fishermen has been committed to improving water quality and fish habitat within 50 miles of New Ulm
The Sunday weather forecast calls for sunshine with a high of 27 degrees

Winward's approach to waste management wasn't all fun and games
He wants to bring waste management efforts into the digital age and bring education to residents' fingertips

Winward's proposed app could also help city operations
The fifth grader wrote the proposed app would notify city workers when recycling bins are full

HOUSTON – As wildfire season ramps up throughout Texas
firefighters in Houston are looking to get ahead of the flames by burning a 50-acre park on purpose
It’s called a controlled burn or a prescribed burn
This is when firefighters intentionally set parts of grassy or wooded areas on fire to rid the area of fuels that would allow a wildfire to expand
The Houston Fire Department Wildland team spent Thursday in the Clear Lake area at Sylvan Rodriguez Park
they conducted systematic burns across 50 acres of grassy prairies
“We did have a naturally occurring fire here last year,” said Justin Huddleston
the Wildland Fire Coordinator with the Houston Fire Department
There was already a concern with the area of experiencing fires in the parks.”
Houston Firefighters invited KPRC 2′s Gage Goulding for an up close and personal look at how they light these controlled burns and help protect homes and buildings
“We’re just going to do a strip plant fire
We’ll see how our fire behavior is,” Huddleston told his crew during a morning safety briefing under a pavilion
Firefighters use these by spreading the flaming fuel onto the grassy prairie and start a fire
rather than walking through there with a lighter and just lighting that you’re able to lay down constant fire
It’s almost like a big kind of cup with a straw in it,” Huddleston said
The result: roaring flames that tower over you
the Natural Resources Manager with Houston Parks and Recreation
“It only takes about a week for the green to start coming back
And in a month it will be very difficult to tell that we even had a fire out here.”
Benefits from the fires extend months or even years after the burn
Firefighters start the burning by creating buffers
These are places where the fire will stop if the wind drives that direction
“I’d like for all of it to burn,” Huddleston said
they don’t have to worry about it re-burning
If we have that look across the entire unit
that’s what we would consider a textbook burn.”
The prescribed burn comes at a really good time
