community and dignitaries honored the life of Molly McGovern
Bernard's Catholic Church of Our Lady of Providence Parish on May 3 that “losing a child is cruel
But there was an overriding sense in the stories shared by McGovern
funny and had developed a vast network of friends that spanned the globe
“She was bright and beautiful,” said McGovern
choking back tears from the church lectern
Elizabeth Warren and Edward Markey in attendance
“Molly made the world a better place and she made us better
Molly died April 23 while visiting family friends in Assisi
She contracted a rare form of cancer in 2019
was in treatment through a clinical trial at New York Presbyterian Hospital
and set to graduate this month from Northeastern University
where she studied political science and international affairs
Molly never let her illness stop her from living life on her terms
citing her decision to study abroad last semester at Bond University in Queensland
Lisa McGovern shared her daughter’s lifelong love of water
Molly luxuriated in water and was known to take long showers and baths
She watched many television shows and movies with water themes
her favorite being “Aquamarine,” about a teenage mermaid
that it rained May 2 when a line of well-wishers extended for many blocks at St
Bernard’s Church to pay their respects to the family
“There was an incredible rainbow (that day)
I know that was Molly,” said Lisa McGovern
Irreverent and funny and a passionate fan of the Boston Bruins were some of the descriptions Patrick used to describe his sister
while making a point to express his gratitude for the years he had with his sister
He visited her in Australia and said Molly awoke at 5 a.m
and took a two-hour bus ride so she could meet him at the airport
She showed him around her college campus and they explored the island of Tasmania off the coast of Australia
with Molly making friends with everyone she connected with along the way
“She made everything a party that everyone wanted to be a part of,” said Patrick
Jonathan Slavinskas met Molly was in a hospital room at UMass Memorial Health after she was diagnosed with cancer
and recalled getting a phone call from Molly at 1:30 a.m
when she told him she had been drinking with friends
"A girl at her age should never have to ask that question," said Slavinskas."Her life was shortened
McGovern shared stories from the lectern that drove home that point
She never wanted to acknowledge odd numbers
toasting twice at parties and pressing the electronic lock on her car eight times
"We do that now," said McGovern rather incredulously of the eight clicks to lock the car
McGovern recalled Molly as a child who wanted to go to the center of the earth after reading Jules Verne's "Journey to the Center of the Earth." So McGovern did his homework
found a cave in West Virginia and had trepidation about the moment when they arrived and saw how small the cave was
'Let's do this.' Her sense of adventure made life so much better."
and McGovern said his daughter was a big fan of Hillary Clinton
McGovern shared a light-hearted moment when Molly met President Barack Obama during his years in the White House
she turned to her father and said Hillary would be a better president
even when she received her cancer diagnosis and barely had enough energy to leave the house
Outside the church as the line grew longer to enter the service
several people spoke of Molly's wonderful life that ended much too soon
and she brought out the best in people," said a man who declined to give his name
He wore a Boston Bruins pin on his sport coat lapel and said he was Molly's neighbor when she lived in Washington
They must be watching the Bruins together."
Lopez of Worcester said she has known the McGovern family for more than 30 years
adding her thoughts while she waited in line
It's absolutely tragic just to be so young."
bowls filled with colored sea glass were stationed near the exits so guests could take one as a reminder of Molly’s love of the ocean

LAFAYETTE — Clinton Prairie senior guard Jake McGraw desired to be recognized as the best small schools basketball player in the Lafayette area
After 43 years of stumbling in the IHSAA sectional round
Clinton Prairie didn't just breakthrough — the team led by McGraw made history
Clinton Prairie made its first state championship appearance
won its first semi-state and regional titles and captured its first sectional title since 1982
the little boy who first set foot in that gym as a 7-year-old became an icon in the town of Frankfort and the connected communities of Mulberry
More: Journal & Courier 2025 Small Schools Boys Basketball All-Area team
McGraw led Clinton Prairie with 22.9 points
4.5 assists and 2.6 steals to be voted the 2025 Journal & Courier Small Schools Player of the Year
McGraw will play basketball at IU-Kokomo next season
McGraw also wanted to be the best basketball player in his family and surpass his older brothers Merrick
He did that too and became the leading scorer at Clinton Prairie with 2,064 pts scored in his career
McGraw is the only player in Clinton Prairie history to score over 2,000 points
you're trying to be the best player you can be," McGraw said
that meant being the best brother out of them all
I accomplished that and I wanted to be one of the best players in the area
Getting to both his desired destination and achievement took the fibers of his competitive will to be tested
Clinton Prairie's season seemed on the brink after finding itself confounded by Central Catholic
Central Catholic had become a gatekeeper for McGraw
having knocked Clinton Prairie from the 2024 sectional playoffs and would go onto win the sectional title itself
More: Guards Jake McGraw and Alex Farley form basketball Gopher Gang at Clinton Prairie
with essentially a home game at Case Arena in Frankfort for the IHSAA regional title
Central Catholic's defensive pressure was getting to McGraw again
He was held scoreless in the first half and another upset for the Knights — who had been favored to lose — seemed to be brewing
The aggressive nature of McGraw began showing after a heart-to-heart discussion with coach Chad Peckinpaugh
McGraw scored 17 points and behind a career high 28 points by junior Nick Curtin
Clinton Prairie had finally beaten Central Catholic in the playoffs
The reverberations of cheers and jeers alike created a lasting memory for McGraw at Case Arena
"We played them three years straight," McGraw said
junior year we lost and that really made me upset
boosted me and I wanted to beat them no matter what in that game
they held and their focus was to guard me for Alex (Farley)
We wouldn't have won that game without Nick Curtin."
McGraw and Clinton Prairie shined during the IHSAA semi-state round and took out Triton who had the No
1 ranked defense in the state and Kouts who had the No
He tore through Triton with 17 points and 11 rebounds and then after another slow start with six points in the first half
scored a team high 24 points to beat Kouts 73-59 after trailing 32-31 at halftime
McGraw reflected on his four years and how the presence of his teammates pushed him to grow
the kid who got the nod from Peckinpaugh to join the varsity team as a freshman would become the leader himself
trash talk and then the times spent afterwards sipping on an occasional Dr
games won and lost start and end with the connectivity and brotherhood he gained in practice
We'd have team dinners and it was always great
Mostly because you get four years in high school
you get all these friends and to bring in all those young juniors and sophomores that were practicing with us and to spend all that time to laugh

— As the weather warms up NBC Montana ventured up to Rock Creek outside of Clinton to fish the lower section of the river
Warmer weather means Rock Creek and other rivers around Montana are starting to rise-- making conditions fast and dirty
That's why John Staats, the owner of Rock Creek Fishermans' Mercantile says he recommends sticking to slow
shallow water this time of year as a safety precaution
"Minimize your wading to just going over marshy side channels or anywhere it gets wet just to get to the main stem of the river and don't get in the river itself," Staats said
River conditions can change fast-- that's why John recommends checking the USGS Flow Chart for the spot you plan to fish before heading out
This time of year-- most of the action is going to be sub-surface with nymphs and streamers
Here's a look at what we used up Rock Creek:
NBC Montana did see some fish rising for March Browns and Blue Wings-- but with the river hovering around 1,000 cubic feet per second and rising-- the best shot at fish will be getting a nymph in deeper holes
“If you know how to get to those fish and how to put the flies on them
but it’s definitely more work at this time of the year," Staats said
Don't let all this muddy water get you down though-- hit the vise-- tie up some salmon flies and remember those big bugs will be the first thing you throw when the water levels out
UNIVERSITY PARK — As part of an effort to bring a youth perspective to high-level government discussions
four Pennsylvania 4-H members attended the National 4-H Conference

Since Trump returned to the White House, he has talked with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, met twice with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and made frequent public comments on the war
How does Trump’s mediation effort stack up historically? I’m a scholar of the presidency
and while we don’t yet know the outcome of the Trump-led negotiations
we do know one thing: He’s not conducting them in the ways presidents – including Trump himself – have conducted them in the past
There are several examples of presidents who attempted to play a mediating role in foreign conflicts
Theodore Roosevelt: Roosevelt won a Nobel Peace Prize for his contributions to ending the 1904-05 Russo-Japanese War, fought over control of Manchuria and Sakhalin Island. Roosevelt had been asked to mediate by Japan, and Russia agreed. In many ways, this episode marked the beginning of the role of the U.S. president as a world leader
Jimmy Carter: Carter’s greatest presidential success arguably came in the Camp David Accords, the framework for peace negotiated in 1978 between Israel and Egypt after decades of conflict. Carter did not win a Nobel Prize for his accomplishment, but Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin did
Bill Clinton: Clinton made two ambitious attempts to broker peace between old adversaries
Clinton’s envoy, former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell, mediated an accord between the British government, the Republic of Ireland and the warring factions in Northern Ireland that was signed on Good Friday 1998
Dealing with a third situation – the wars set off by the disintegration of Yugoslavia– the Clinton administration also obtained an agreement over Bosnia in the 1995 Dayton Accords when the parties were sufficiently exhausted
attacks on Israel by Hamas may have been an attempt to stop subsequent efforts to extend the Abraham Accords to Saudi Arabia.)
Although all of these examples involved presidential leadership and involvement
Roosevelt never attended the peace negotiations over the Russo-Japanese War in Portsmouth, but he actively offered proposals through intermediaries before and during the conference
The final stages of negotiation were held on his yacht
Carter’s breakthrough came when he engaged in intense personal diplomacy at Camp David, where he, Sadat and Begin were sequestered for 13 days. To complete the deal, Carter had to shuffle back and forth between the principals and at one point had to make a frantic appeal to Sadat not to leave
Clinton’s unsuccessful efforts to broker an agreement between Arafat and a succession of Israeli prime ministers extended over the duration of his two-term presidency and frequently involved personal meetings and exchanges
On the other hand, Clinton’s involvement in the Northern Ireland resolution did not primarily come in the form of personal diplomacy at the end of the process. Rather, he set the conditions for a settlement earlier when he approved a visa for Irish Republican leader Gerry Adams to enter the U.S.
against the wishes of Britain and Clinton’s own advisers
When Clinton went to Belfast for a Christmas tree lighting in 1995, he brought together Catholic leaders committed to the unification of Ireland and Protestant leaders loyal to Britain
First lady Hillary Clinton also contributed by meeting with Irish women’s organizations on both sides
In contrast, in the Dayton process Clinton was later portrayed by chief negotiator Richard Holbrooke as essentially disengaged
where sensitive issues of land possession were involved
many of the negotiations benefited from privacy in the process
Second, successful mediations came most often when the U.S. was neutral, such as in the Portsmouth negotiations, or friendly toward both parties to some degree, such as with the Camp David, Good Friday and Abraham negotiations. Dayton was the exception in that the U.S
This is a highly controversial and risky strategy that has damaged relations with U.S. allies and cost the U.S. moral capital in pursuit of an uncertain peace
Whatever success Trump ultimately achieves
which has been pursued over a period of six months so far
has been more difficult than he anticipated

We need a new road.” Jewell has already replaced a car due to the road conditions and recently bought a new tire
“I’m not buying a new car because why should I just for it to get messed up?” said Jewell
Clinton Township recently held a forum to discuss the funding needed to address the poor condition of subdivision roads
and nothing seems to get done,” said one resident
According to the PASER study, 59% of neighborhood streets in Clinton Township are rated as poor or failed
The study defines “poor” as requiring major overlay
Roads needing reconstruction are rated as “failed.”
The jurisdiction for these roads falls under Macomb County
“Here’s the problem: the funding formula is called Public Act 51 of 1951
It has not substantially changed since 1951,” he said
Gieleghem said funding comes from the state through gas taxes and car registrations
which are pooled in Lansing and distributed according to this outdated formula
Residents are concerned that the situation is worsening
They’re urging residents to contact their state legislator by signing this online form.
Even for people who don’t live in the community, the township is also encouraging Michiganders to copy and paste the form to send to their state lawmakers to advocate for necessary changes.

As far as Stacy London and Clinton Kelly are concerned
instead of being ambushed for their fashion choices after being nominated by friends and relatives
participants share their vision for a "fantasy look" with the hosts
who gently guide them through a warehouse decked out with duds they might like
(Items featured in each episode are available for purchase on Amazon.) In the premiere episode
hopes to shed her youthful wardrobe because she's mistaken for being a kid
she says she "got stuck in whatever's comfortable: leggings
I feel like I've never really invested time in myself."
says he came up with the idea for the series when asked to bring back “What Not to Wear,” which ran from 2003–13
‘I don't own that show,’” he says with a laugh
and I said: ‘Any show that I would ever do right now would have to be called ‘Wear Whatever the F You Want,’ because that's what I honestly believe
“It is contemporary to what we need to see in terms of makeovers
because there are no rules anymore,” London says
“To apply the same kind of framework of ‘What Not to Wear’ to a show like this makes no sense
here's this leopard toe shoe.’ Instead of hearing what people actually wanted
London has seen the clips of “What Not to Wear” on TikTok critiquing the hosts’ feedback and wanted to avoid providing more fodder
“She loves telling me that we've been ripped apart on TikTok,” Kelly says with a laugh
“Somebody said I was the OG mean girl,” London says
answer questions like dance partners rarely out of step
“From the second I sat next to Stacy during my audition (for 'What Not to Wear,') we had an instant chemistry,” Kelly says
It was like that for 10 years of ‘What Not to Wear.’ And it was like that for eight episodes of ‘Wear Whatever the F You Want.’ When we got back into the studio together
camaraderie supporting each other and our client.”
It’s hard to believe the two ever had a falling out
after he published a collection of essays in 2017
“Why did I love and loathe Stacy?” Kelly wrote in “I Hate Everyone
I’ve met few people so good as she at making others feel decidedly special
… I loathed Stacy because … well … maybe there was some jealousy on my part
and I felt that she was almost constantly jockeying for it.”
'What Not to Wear' co-hosts Stacy London, Clinton Kelly reunite after 10-year feud
The hosts credit their new show with bringing them together
“Clinton talks about the fact that we really challenge anybody to sit next to somebody for 10 years every day
day in and day out and get along just fine,” London says
it's like a brother and sister on a long car trip.”
And a lot of people don't like to hear that
Because when you have strong feelings in the positive towards somebody
you're going to have some negative feelings about them as well
That's just the way we are as human beings
“But it is much more fun to work together than not work together,” London adds

William Jefferson Clinton
served as the 42nd President of the United States from Jan
His proponents contend that under his presidency the US enjoyed the lowest unemployment and inflation rates in recent history
They give him credit for eliminating the federal deficit and reforming welfare
despite being forced to deal with a Republican-controlled Congress
After the Apr. 19, 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, an act of domestic terrorism that killed 168 people (including 19 children), the country rallied behind their president as he comforted them and acted decisively to deal with the tragedy. [56]
In Sep. 2000, a six-year $50 million investigation into the Clinton’s Whitewater real estate deal ended when an independent counsel was unable to find sufficient evidence to file criminal charges. [68] Two months later, Hillary Clinton was elected as a US Senator representing the state of New York. [61]
The crime rate fell every year that Clinton was president and was at a 26-year low by the end of his two terms. He got funding for 100,000 new police officers nationwide. He signed the 1993 Brady Bill requiring a waiting period and background check to purchase handguns. Clinton’s 1994 Crime Bill included a ban on assault weapons, and there was a 40 percent decline in gun crime by 2001. [8]
Clinton’s Goals 2000 program distributed two billion dollars between 1994 and 1999 to set uniform standards in US schools. His 1994 Improving America’s School Act (IASA) received support from Republicans and Democrats and from the education and business communities. IASA required that standards and accountability be the same for economically disadvantaged students as for other students. [12]
Clinton was aware of the threat of Al Qaeda and authorized the CIA to kill Osama bin Laden. He sought to hunt down bin Laden after the Oct. 12, 2000 attack on the USS Cole, but the CIA and FBI refused to certify bin Laden’s involvement in the terrorist act. “I got closer to killing him than anybody’s gotten since,” Clinton said in a Sep. 24, 2006 interview with Chris Wallace. [27]
The number of federal prisoners doubled under Clinton, and 58 percent of them were serving time for drug-related offenses. Resources were geared towards incarceration instead of rehabilitation or crime prevention. [29] Clinton’s 1994 Crime Bill was filled with “pork spending” that distributed $10 billion to states and special interest groups. [30]
Clinton was unable to fulfill his campaign promise to repeal the ban on homosexuals serving in the military. Faced with strong opposition from conservatives early in his presidency, Clinton settled on a compromise policy referred to as “don’t ask, don’t tell,” which allowed gays to serve in the military if they did not disclose their sexual orientation. Neither conservatives nor liberals were satisfied by the outcome. [24]
Clinton gets too much credit for the good economy of the 1990s, which was already growing when he took office. The Republican-controlled Congress helped improve the economy by exercising fiscal restraint. [31] Clinton’s failure to regulate the financial-services markets enabled the bad lending and Wall Street scams that led to the 2007 banking crisis. [32]
Clinton’s Goals 2000 program did not ensure uniform quality of standards among all the states because he compromised on oversight to get the program passed. The impact therefore varied by state and Clinton never fulfilled his goal of equalizing education standards and improving results for all students. By 2000, six years after IASA was implemented, only 17 states were in full compliance with the standards. [12]
Clinton cut NASA’s budget by $715 million in 1995 (about 5%) and did not restore the bulk of the money until three months before he left office. The result was a space program struggling to operate with less money for most of Clinton’s time in office. Some blame the 2003 Space Shuttle Columbia explosion on Clinton’s decision to slash NASA’s budget by an aggregate of $56 million over his presidency. [39]

Bianca Gomes open up on creative freedom in Samantha Ruth Prabhu backed ‘Subham’
May 5 (SocialNews.XYZ) Music composer duo Clinton Cerejo and Bianca Gomes
under the creative partnership Shor Police
have made their debut in Telugu cinema with ‘Subham’
The duo said that they were given complete creative freedom on the project
The film is bankrolled by actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu
who are known for their experimental style and emotionally rich soundscapes
adding their signature boldness and freshness to the film’s musical narrative
“This is our first venture into the South industry as composers
although we’ve both sung in South films before
What excited us most about the Subham album was the creative freedom to explore an eclectic soundscape
ranging from R&B and rap to nostalgic TV serial vibes
Working with Samantha was a great opportunity
especially since it’s her maiden production”
“Telugu audiences are incredibly open to diverse genres
and that gave us the chance to step out of our comfort zone and tell this quirky
and it allowed us to play with musical ideas that we don’t often get to experiment with in traditional film soundtracks”
The album perfectly captures the energy and mirrors the narrative arc of ‘Subham’
It reflects the film’s quirky horror-comedy tone through an eclectic blend of genres
ranging from R&B grooves and Telugu rap to hip-hop
and experimental contemporary electronic textures
the lineup already promises variety and punch
"There’s nothing an artist loves more than being given a blank canvas to work on
and that’s exactly what we got with this film
When you work with a director or producer for the first time
the creative process naturally takes a little time as you try to understand where they’re coming from
But we were fortunate to find that understanding early on
which helped bring out the best in the music”
it’s so important to stay true to the characters and the mood of the story
it’s about communicating the narrative to the audience
everything needs to come together cohesively
I think that freedom really allowed us to craft a strong musical statement with these songs”
Shor Police have another Bollywood release in the pipeline in the form of ‘Pune Highway’
and features a stellar lineup of artists like Sunidhi Chauhan
‘Subham’ is set to arrive in cinemas on May 9
Pune Highway will arrive on screens on May 16
adding another feather to the duo’s bold musical journey

Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has once again sparked rumors she has undergone a facelift
The internet was soon awash with scores of comments about her surprisingly youthful looks, with many people speculating that she'd had a facelift.
Now top plastic surgeons have weighed in on the debate.
'She's doing maintenance for sure,' Colorado-based Dr Chris Thiagarajah told the Daily Mail.
'A little bit of filler in the cheeks, laser skin resurfacing or other skin work. I'm seeing that and think it's possible — but that's it.'
This type of cosmetic work differs from a facelift because patients do not have incisions or need their skin pulled back.
Dr Michael Niccole, from CosmetiCare in Newport Beach, California, added: 'There's no question Hillary Clinton has had some form of non-surgical facial rejuvenation.
'Her skin appears smoother, and the fine lines are significantly reduced, which is typically the result of either a chemical peel or skin resurfacing treatment.'
Hillary, 77, looked remarkably taut faced and wrinkle free in the new pictures
Chemical peels are when chemicals are used to exfoliate the skin to improve its appearance, while laser resurfacing is when concentrated beams of light are targeted at specific areas to minimize fine lines, wrinkles and pigment issues.
Both surgeons caveated their claims by stressing they have not examined Clinton in person and could only base their opinions on photos.
Clinton's representatives had not responded to the Daily Mail's request for comment at the time of publication
When comparing Wednesday's photo to a picture of Clinton from 2023
the experts pointed specifically to the lack of lines on her forehead and around her eyes
could have been achieved with Botox in these areas
They added that she may also be using microneedling
which can give the appearance of tighter skin
This is a minimally invasive procedure that involves puncturing the skin with very fine and sterile needles to stimulate its natural healing process and the production of collagen
The procedure typically costs between $200 and $700 per session
make-up and camera angles could also be distorting the appearance of Clinton's face
a top plastic surgeon who has carried out more than 1,500 facelifts and teaches other surgeons the technique
said he does not believe Clinton has had a recent facelift
I can tell she definitely did not have surgery,' he claimed
Clinton pictured above at the DNC convention in August
'She still looks age appropriate; her cheeks are more drooped
a heavy neck and elongated upper lip — which would be reduced by a facelift,' he continued
'But she has most definitely had some type of skin resurfacing done by a laser or chemical peel
which creates smoother skin and eliminates creases
her skin looks as though she has lived in Iceland all her life — and had little sun damage.'
This is not the first time Clinton has faced speculation over potential tweakments
Rumors that she'd had a face have been reported as far back as 2015
Journalist Edward Klein claimed Clinton set up a 'mini-operating room' in her home in Chappaqua
to get plastic surgery done ahead of her run for president
He continued: 'If it had started to make her look weird
It was a pretty big deal and required multiple visits.'
Her spokesman denied the allegations at the time
saying: 'Someone should do a book about Ed
"Bulls**t: The Problem With Anything Ed Klein Writes'
Dr Thiagarajah suggested that Clinton had received surgery to open up her eyes
or an operation to tighten the muscle that lifts the upper eyelid to give eyes a more open
which is when skin is removed from above the eyes to enhance their appearance
'This kind of surgery can be done medically
Rumors of plastic surgery resurfaced again in 2019 after she appeared looking particularly youthful at an event on Broadway
Journalists reported how her glowing skin was noticeably smoother and her cheeks more defined than earlier that same week
said at the time that Clinton had been 'genetically blessed' with good skin - but claimed it could also be a result of Botox
injectable dermal fillers and Blepharoplasty
Clinton's appearance at the Democrat National Convention in August last year sparked yet more rumors
One viewer wrote online: 'Me Googling deep plane facelift after seeing Miss Hillary Clinton looking absolutely snatched at the DNC'
A second said: 'Is this really Hillary Clinton
Clinton's team did not respond to a request for comment
Clinton said in response to a poke at her blonde hairdo: 'All our presidents come into office looking so vigorous
And then we watch their hair grow grayer and grayer
I may not be the youngest candidate in this race
but I will be the youngest woman president in the history of the United States
And one additional advantage: You won't see my hair turn white in the White House.'

A fatal accident in Clinton County Thursday evening claimed the life of a Tennessee woman.
Kentucky State Police say 21-year-old Kayelyn Garrett of Livingston, Tennessee, was traveling west on KY 558 in a 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe. Police say Garrett entered the 127 intersection and collided with a 1999 Dodge Dakota traveling north on US 127, operated by Derek Guffey, 18, of Albany.
Garrett was transported to the Medical Center in Albany, where she was later pronounced dead by the Clinton County Coroner.
Guffey, along with a juvenile passenger in Garrett’s vehicle, were transported to the University of Kentucky Hospital with serious injuries.
Two additional passengers in Garrett’s vehicle, 23-year-old Sierra Fulton of Monticello and a juvenile, were transported to the Medical Center at Albany for treatment of minor injuries.
The accident is under investigation by Kentucky State Police.

A federal judge ruled Friday that President Donald Trump's executive order targeting the law firm that represented political foe Hilary Clinton was unconstitutional and permanently blocked his administration from enforcing the order, said media reports.
The executive order, which Trump issued against four law firms, called for the immediate suspension of any active security clearances held by Perkins Coie law firm employees.
It directed government agencies to require contractors to disclose any business with the firm and agency leaders to review all contracts with the company or entities doing business with it. The order also limited access by the law firm's employees to federal buildings and government workers.
"Using the powers of the federal government to target lawyers for their representation of clients and avowed progressive employment policies in an overt attempt to suppress and punish certain viewpoints, however, is contrary to the Constitution, which requires that the government respond to dissenting or unpopular speech or ideas with 'tolerance, not coercion,'" US District Judge Beryl Howell wrote in her ruling.
Howell noted that Trump's directive sought to punish Perkins Coie and sent a message that "lawyers must stick to the party line, or else." The judge also found that the executive order violated the first, fifth and sixth amendments to the Constitution.
Perkins Coie represented former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential election, which she lost to Trump. The company hired a research firm that retained former British spy Christopher Steele, who produced the Steele Dossier, which alleged misconduct, conspiracy and cooperation between Trump's campaign and the Russian government leading up to the election.
The decision from Howell is the first in one of four cases brought by law firms that have been targeted and penalized by Trump because of their associations with people and political causes that the president disfavors.
The other three firms -- Jenner & Block, Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr and Susman Godfrey -- have filed lawsuits challenging their respective executive orders.
At least nine other law firms, however, have reached agreements with the White House to avoid being penalized by the president. The deals, announced by Trump on social media, include commitments to provide between $40 million and $125 million in pro bono legal work.
Howell referenced the nine firms in her ruling and said they appeared to have received Trump's suggestion that they may be subject to punishment unless they agree to his terms.
Howell added that the executive order targeting Perkins Coie "presents an unprecedented attack" on the principles of the American judicial system and "stigmatizes and penalizes" the firm and its employees because of its past and current representation of clients that take positions that the president disfavors.
"If the founding history of this country is any guide, those who stood up in court to vindicate constitutional rights and, by so doing, served to promote the rule of law, will be the models lauded when this period of American history is written," said Howell.
