We are saddened to share that Doug Clute began his heavenly journey on April 23
Doug was a chemical dependency counselor(LICDC) in the 1980s at Edwin Shaw Hospital working with adolescents
He then went to Oriana House where he spent a couple of decades changing lives
He was a sponsor to many and a leader of hundreds of meetings
We are grateful for the many sweet memories he leaves us with
He is survived by his loved ones: Simone Clute
To share a memory of Douglas or leave a special message for his family

In an Oregon track and field outdoor debut that didn't feature any of the names that helped the Ducks win the women's indoor national title last week
one familiar face made her return to the track for the Ducks
Katie Clute ran her very first steeplechase at the Oregon Preview at Hayward Field to open the outdoor season following a stellar prep career in Ohio and a strong start during cross-country and indoor track season as a college freshman
Clute took to Hayward Field for the first time once again Friday in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the same meet and won in dominant fashion
sporting a pink top while running unattached
24.09 seconds to win her very first race of the academic year after sitting out both the cross-country season in the fall and the indoor season
but she was excited to return to the track under the lights at Hayward
especially it being my first steeple in a little bit
But I felt more and more comfortable as I was doing it and I think my water jumps got better and I just got a little more comfortable."
the 2022-23 Gatorade State Athlete of the Year in Ohio for cross country and a seven-time state champion at Olmsted Falls High School
ended her freshman year strong during outdoor season last summer
The rookie finished second at the 2024 Pac-12 Championships in the steeple and sixth in the 5,000
ran a personal-best 9:56.99 steeple at the NCAA Championship meet to finish 13th
and won both the 3,000 and steeplechase at the 2024 USATF U20 Championships in June
Clute later ran at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima
Clute says she wants to keep the same joy she ran with last season while she was learning the steeplechase for the first time
"I'm trying to really approach it as having fun with it," Clute said
"That's something that really helped me last year and I was just really excited to try something new and I want to keep that with me."
Oregon hammer record-holder Shelby Moran returned to Hayward unattached over the weekend
The school record she set at Oregon last season was 229-8
Moran had a strong final season with the Ducks in 2024
finishing fourth at NCAAs and participating in the U.S
The Ducks' next scheduled meet is the Battle at the Beach in Long Beach
and their next home meet is the Oregon Open and Team Invitational April 18-19 at Hayward Field

Watkins Glen Village Mayor Laurie DeNardo said a ribbon cutting event at the ADA accessible playground is tentatively scheduled for May 20 at Clute Park

View Before and After Photos of the Harborside Village Apartments & Renderings of the Clute Park Playground
Mosley today announced significant progress on the Watkins Glen Downtown Revitalization Initiative with the completion of the Harborside Village Apartments and a groundbreaking for the ADA accessible playground at Clute Park
The Village of Watkins Glen has now completed seven of its DRI projects
and an additional 16 projects have been completed with over $1.9 million from the Village’s DRI multi-site/small project fund
Once construction of the Clute Park Playground is complete
Watkins Glen will have implemented its full DRI award of $10 million
these projects further the goal of Watkins Glen’s DRI to capitalize on the Village’s assets and create a vibrant year-round economy
“The Village of Watkins Glen started its DRI with a clear vision and goal of capitalizing on historic assets to create a thriving year-round economy and public spaces for all to enjoy,” said Secretary of State Walter T
Mosley. “It’s exciting to see all the progress that has been made so far with the completion of the Harborside Village Apartments and the groundbreaking for the Village’s final DRI project – the Clute Park Playground
I look forward to returning to Watkins Glen in the near future to see the complete transformation of this booming community.”
The Harborside Village Apartments project transformed a formerly vacant medical office into five market rate apartments
The former Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) building located nearby was also renovated for use as a fitness center with four upper floor residential units as part of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative; these renovations were completed in 2022
These projects received a combined $250,000 through the DRI
approximately $2.5 million in EPF Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) funds and $415,000 in New York State Office of Parks
The Village of Watkins Glen was named the Southern Tier Downtown Revitalization Initiative winner for Round Two
other projects that were awarded DRI funding include developing a new mixed-income housing and childcare center; redeveloping Captain Bill’s Port of Seneca Lake; installing new lighting on Franklin Street and gateway and wayfinding signage throughout the Village; and upgrading Lafayette Park
“Governor Hochul remains committed to supporting the communities selected as beneficiaries of the transformative Downtown Revitalization Initiative
The focused investments in the Harborside Village Apartments and Clute Park Playground projects are essential in bringing new life back to the Watkins Glen community
we are reinforcing our commitment to our neighborhoods and to families for generations to come."
State Parks Commissioner Pro Tempore Randy Simons said
“Thanks to Governor Hochul’s commitment to Watkins Glen and the entire Southern Tier
This playground is a great complement to the village and each of these DRI projects strengthen the link between Watkins Glen State Park and Seneca Lake waterfront
Our State Parks and Historic Sites are year-round destinations
and these projects enhance this effort for the entire Southern Tier.”
Village of Watkins Glen Mayor Laurie DeNardo said
“Watkins Glen has exceeded all expectations with each of our DRI projects
Thank you Governor Hochul and the state agencies who supported all of our projects
The new ADA playground will be our final DRI project in the Village and while it's bittersweet
the accomplishments will provide years of enjoyment for the future that we all should be proud of."
Chairman of the Schuyler County Legislature
“The DRI program has been transformational for both the Village and the County
We appreciate Governor Hochul’s continued support for this program as it has catalyzed redevelopment of buildings
and provided 17 new or renovated apartments for new residents.”
Governor Hochul announced in August the availability of another $100 million for Round 8 of the DRI
as well as another $100 million for Round 3 of NY Forward
which the Governor created in 2022 to serve New York’s smaller and rural communities
Round 8 applications were due October 18; the Regional Economic Development Councils are currently reviewing those applications
the State has committed a total of $1.2 billion to both programs
The State has already awarded $800 million to 81 communities throughout the State in the first 7 rounds of the DRI and $200 million to 43 communities in the first two rounds of NY Forward.
About the Downtown Revitalization Initiative
The DRI was launched in 2016 to accelerate and bolster the revitalization of downtowns and neighborhoods in all 10 regions of the State to serve as centers of activity and catalysts for increased local investments
DRI communities benefit from partnerships with and coordinated technical assistance provided by the Department of Housing and Community Renewal (HCR)
Empire State Development (ESD) and the New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA)
The DRI represents an unprecedented and innovative "plan-then-act" strategy that couples strategic planning with immediate implementation.

Clute won the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 10 minutes

She shattered the previous meet record of 10:14.67
After running stride-for-stride with North Carolina State's Angelina Napoleon for the entire race
Clute uncorked a blistering final 100 meters to propel herself to victory
"I honestly didn't really have a plan coming in," Clute said
"I was just gonna roll with the punches and see what happened; if I needed to take it

I didn't want to start too far out and not be able to hold it
Last weekend at Hayward
Clute placed 13th at the NCAA Championships in 9:56.99
It was just the fourth time in her life that she had run the event
Although she was a seven-time state champion during her prep running career at Olmsted Falls High School in Ohio
it was a different skillset that sparked UO distance coach Shalane Flanagan to test Clute in the steeplechase this spring

"It's just been about handling it better mentally — barrier by barrier

Ed Clute’s relationship with this paper goes back about as far as is possible
and that album featured in my very first column of reviews
All that press on our fledgling website sent a flood of the curious our way when a video of Ed Clute playing “Sweet Georgia Brown” went viral
garnering millions of views and inspiring people to learn more about the genius at the piano
It was well before that overnight success (of the kind decades in the making) and an appearance on America’s Got Talent that followed
Clute returned to Rivermont to record the tracks that appear on Shadows on the Moon
Released this year these gems were recorded in late 2017
the same year A Summer Night’s Magic was released
I am uncertain why this album was held off until now
I have been enjoying this record since December
having received a copy before its release this spring
Somehow anticipating his appeal to a broader audience the album includes a few widely known popular hits
opening with “When You Wish Upon A Star,” and hopefully that accessibility will trigger new public attention
Rivermont squeezes 27 tracks on the disc because most barely break two minutes and yet each feels like an experience
The notes describe it as music that is like “aspirin” for your worries and that is how the album has served me over many months as winter snow turned to summer heat
says these songs are Ed Clute’s “lifelong companions,” many of us will feel the same way about them
There is an attempt to connect all the tracks with a moon and night theme; “Shadow Waltz,” “Russian Lullaby,” “Midnight
and You,” “In the Still of the Night.” Amid the melancholy there is joy
“Dream a Little Dream of Me” had me almost dancing
The standout track for me is “Deep Night,” he pulls more depth from the title as a piano solo than most bands can with these slight emotional catches that sound almost like they will jump to a happy rag
Every time I play the album that track jolts me into focus
unbridled skill but not overt showiness when it isn’t needed
Arranging on the fly he stays close to the melody and lets the music speak
your troubles soothed in empathy for the human experience as conveyed by the immortal classics
This is even more remarkable since many of these titles are usually supported by lyrics to gain that resonance
Ed Clute was recorded for this album at home on his 1912 Mason and Hamlin Grand Piano
surrounded by his immense collection of 78s
A video of him testing out the piano at a B & B after tuning it brought him briefly into the homes of millions
The true fans of his classic piano style will want to bring this album into their homes and spend some quality time alone with Ed Clute at the piano

(WENY) -- Crews are moving into the final few weeks of construction for the ADA playground coming to Clute Park in Watkins Glen
Village of Watkins Glen Mayor Laurie DeNardo posted on Facebook on Sunday a picture showing the pirate ship-themed playground equipment has been installed
The new playground is set to be a space accessible to all
with different equipment for children with disabilities
This includes a swing set that can be used by children in wheelchairs
I think they're excited to see movement
it's really coming along," said Mayor DeNardo
we have to reseed and get the surroundings all back together but
the community and people that I've talked to they're very excited about it."
Construction for the new playground started in November after the village held a groundbreaking event for the project
Mayor DeNardo also said this addition to Clute Park is the final project as part of the $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative awarded to Watkins Glen in 2017
The new playground is expected to open in mid-April
but an official opening date has not been released
