Space Coast tourism officials have some concerns about the outlook for their industry in light of the national political climate and proposed legislation in Tallahassee Among those worried is hotel owner Tom Hermansen, who also is vice chair of the Brevard County Tourist Development Council Hermansen has ownership interest in six hotels in Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral He said advance bookings six months out at his hotels are down compared with the previous year at this time Tourism officials say their concerns include uncertainty about the U.S economy; declining consumer confidence; Canadians who are hesitant to visit the United States because of political friction between the two countries; and cutback in budgets for travel by government employees After year-over-year increases in Brevard County tourist development tax collections in the first four months of the county's budget year that began Oct the collections fell by 7% in February — the latest-available figure — compared with February 2024 The county collects a 5% tourist development tax on hotel rooms vacation rentals and other short-terms rentals The figure is viewed as a key economic indicator of the strength of tourism Tourism officials are anxiously awaiting the March and April figures which encompass the historically busy spring break period "We're just cautiously watching what these numbers do," Space Coast Office of Tourism Executive Director Cranis said the Office of Tourism in May will begin its summer marketing campaign hoping to attract more visitors to the area Tourism is a big sector of the local economy accounting for 46,000 direct and spinoff jobs with $1.5 billion a year in tourism-related wages About 30% of the sales tax and 20% of the gas tax collected in Brevard County is paid by tourists according to a study commissioned by the Office of Tourism Tourism officials also are wary about a tax proposal approved by the Florida House of Representatives that would direct counties to give a county's property owners rebates on their property-tax bills equivalent to 75% of what the county collects in tourist development tax on hotel rooms Brevard's tourist development tax generated $25.26 million in revenue in the last budget year. That money is used to market the Space Coast to tourists, as well as for such things as beach renourishment; grants for tourism-related capital facilities; grants for cultural and sports organizations and events; the Brevard Zoo; and ocean lifeguards counties could use tourist development tax revenue for any purpose and tourist development councils would be eliminated "We're all watching what the legislature is doing, and we'll see how that develops," said Tourist Development Council Chair Rob Feltner, who also chairs the Brevard County Commission Dave Berman is business editor at FLORIDA TODAY. Contact Berman at dberman@floridatoday.com, on X at @bydaveberman and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/dave.berman.54 Home » Home » JUST RELEASED: U.S Navy Blue Angels Scheduled to Perform at Cocoa Beach Air-Space Expo Coming April 2026 By  //  May 3 FLORIDA – The United States Navy Blue Angels are officially scheduled to headline the 2026 Cocoa Beach Air Expo bringing their world-renowned aerial performance to Florida’s Space Coast next spring Organizers announced that the elite flight demonstration squadron will perform during the weekend of April 11-12 will once again transform the beachfront into a prime viewing area for some of the most thrilling aviation displays in the world who have thrilled millions of spectators since 1946 will showcase their precision maneuvers in the powerful Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornets Their performance will highlight the Air Expo’s lineup which is expected to feature a range of military and civilian aircraft displays The 2026 show will mark the Blue Angels’ first appearance in Cocoa Beach since 2021 when they participated in the Space Coast International Air Show Thousands are expected to flock to the beaches to witness the high-speed passes and aerobatic feats that have made the Blue Angels one of the world’s premier aerial teams Local officials are working closely with event organizers to coordinate parking Founded shortly after World War II to inspire public interest in naval aviation the Blue Angels have performed for more than 500 million spectators worldwide Their appearance at the Cocoa Beach Air Expo 2026 will celebrate 80 years of the squadron’s history and excellence Click Here to Sign Up for Text Alerts Jury selection began on May 5 in the trial of Karly Anderson, a former elementary school teacher charged in connection to a massive teen party that took place earlier this year Judge Kimberly Musselman and attorneys for the state and Anderson began the process this week of eliminating jurors who may have prior knowledge or not be impartial about the proceedings Defense attorney Kenneth Weaver at the May 5 jury selection emphasized that free speech rights under the Constitution were important to his client’s defense “This case is about free speech. The jury needs to be instructed that everybody has a right to free speech,” said Weaver, who previously told FLORIDA TODAY that Anderson was not present at the home when the party took place but rather out to dinner with Elizabeth Hill-Brodigan then-principal of Roosevelt Elementary School Anderson only arrived at the home after police called Hill-Brodigan to alert her that a party was being held at her residence Weaver filed a motion to dismiss all three charges on April 23, saying body cam footage that showed Anderson admitting to drinking at the party and shouting profanities at a Cocoa Beach police officer was accurate but that Anderson's actions "do not support any of the three charges as a matter of law." Anderson entered pleas of not guilty for all counts Anderson's trial comes less than four months after she was arrested in connection to the alcohol-fueled party at Hill-Brodigan's home was initially charged with child neglect and contributing to the delinquency of a minor The party and arrests garnered national media coverage with body cam footage circulating on social media in the following weeks Following the arrests, both Anderson and Hill-Brodigan were placed on paid administrative leave by Brevard Public Schools. But because Anderson was cleared of felony charges, she was allowed to return to the classroom in mid-April, this time at Saturn Elementary School in Cocoa She worked at the school for two days before being put back on paid leave with School Board Vice Chair Matt Susin saying the district had not previously seen body cam footage showing her shouting profanities at a Cocoa Beach police officer according to BPS Spokesperson Janet Murnaghan Hill-Brodigan was placed on unpaid leave after she was formally charged at the end of March with one count of child neglect five counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and one count of holding an open house party A trial date for Hill-Brodigan has not been set Several of the 24 initial jurors in Anderson's trial admitted to having prior knowledge of the case from consuming news media Multiple jurors said they had seen video of Anderson appearing to be under the influence of alcohol in various news reports and stated that it could impact their impartiality on the case Musselman told jurors she expected the trial to take no more than two or three days Tyler Vazquez is the Brevard County Watchdog Reporter at FLORIDA TODAY Contact Vazquez at 321-480-0854 or tvazquez@floridatoday.com Home » Home » WATCH: Cocoa Beach Weekend Surf & Weather Report with Nikki McCoy Freeman By  //  May 2 ABOVE VIDEO: Cocoa Beach Weekend Surf & Weather Report with Nikki McCoy Freeman Let’s dive into your Cocoa Beach surf and weather forecast for this weekend Friday’s bringing us a mix of clouds and sun Surf’s looking to be in the 1-2 ft range—knee to thigh high Winds will be from the southeast at 5 to 10 mph Saturday’s forecast is partly sunny and pleasant Winds will be from the south-southeast around 15 mph Tip of the day: Grab your longboard and hit the waves early to avoid the chop Sunday brings more clouds with a chance of showers and thunderstorms Morning winds from the southwest around 10 mph will shift to the south-southeast later making for semi-clean conditions early on so you might want to Consider an early session to catch the cleaner conditions before the weather turns That’s your weekend surf and weather update for Cocoa Beach Whether you’re catching waves or just soaking up the sun Don’t forget your sunscreen and stay hydrated And hey — if you’re dreaming of calling the Space Coast home or maybe you’re thinking about selling while the market’s still hot I’m Nikki Freeman with McCoy Freeman Compass — your local real estate expert Let’s connect and make your beachside dream a reality BREVARD COUNTY – A SWAT team struck a home in Brevard County on Friday morning as part of a month-long drug investigation according to the Cocoa Beach Police Department In a release detectives said they worked with the sheriff’s office’s SWAT team to execute a search warrant around 9 a.m a significant quantity of narcotics and drug paraphernalia was discovered inside the home,” the release reads the man living at the home — identified as 40-year-old Scott McElman — was arrested and now faces the following charges: “The arrest follows a month-long investigation by Cocoa Beach detectives who gathered sufficient evidence to obtain the search warrant,” the release continues McElman had previously been arrested by Cocoa Beach police in 2022 on similar drug-related charges though he was out on bond awaiting trial when Friday’s SWAT raid occurred Anyone with more information about this case is urged to contact detectives at (321) 868-3248 Copyright 2025 by WKMG ClickOrlando - In interviews conducted following the party students told police that the party involved underage drinking the use of marijuana and fights between teens seen in Cocoa Beach Police body cam footage was discovered having an alcohol-related medical episode on Hill-Brodigan's front lawn and another was charged with driving under the influence as she left the party Students also said similar parties took place regularly at Hill-Brodigan's home Both women were present at the home, according to court records, and Brevard Public Schools placed them both on paid administrative leave immediately after the incident. Hill-Brodigan's leave was switched to unpaid leave in April after the state attorney's office formally charged her with one count of child neglect with School Board Vice Chair Matt Susin saying the district had not previously seen body cam footage showing her shouting profanities that (footage) was not afforded to us before yesterday afternoon and we accept the fact that we're going to be putting in the investigation," he said at an April 15 press conference "This is deplorable action; the entire thing is not acceptable to BPS standards." Susin added that the district was going to investigate whether or not Anderson took part in the party, something that Weaver has contested, telling FLORIDA TODAY that she and Hill-Brodigan had been out to dinner when police called to alert Hill-Brodigan to a party taking place at the home Anderson didn't supply any alcohol to any juveniles didn't have anything to do with it," Weaver said and the police made all kinds of assumptions." charges," Brevard State Attorney William Scheiner said in a statement issued Tuesday Hill-Brodigan could face up to five years in state prison along with fines of at least $5,000 would face up to 60 days in county jail along with a minimum fine of $500 Hearing dates have not yet been set in the cases director of communications for the district said both women remain on administrative leave "The district is actively reviewing the state attorney’s charges against former Roosevelt principal Elizabeth Hill-Brodigan and teacher Karly Anderson," she said in an statement emailed to FLORIDA TODAY Tuesday afternoon "We take these charges extremely seriously and will continue to closely follow any updates from authorities." The two woman were arrested in January after an investigation into the Jan 19 house party that took place at Hill-Brodigan's home Officers were called to the home multiple times and asked Hill-Brodigan to shut it down repeatedly They arrested a girl leaving the party on a charge of driving under the influence and found a boy having an alcohol-related medical episode on the lawn of the home students from multiple different schools interviewed by Cocoa Beach Police said parties like this occurred once or twice a month at Hill-Brodigan's home adding that some of them showed up early to help prepare for the party They reported alcohol being available in coolers inside the home the use of marijuana and multiple fights taking place A video recorded by a student showed a male juvenile with a mask on taking videos with a firearm Students told police that Hill-Brodigan didn't attempt to stop the party and that she seemed "okay with what was happening," according to the affidavit though they went on to say that she told her son to stop the party No information about her son's age or name was provided Both woman were initially arrested on charges of child neglect without great bodily harm and contributing to the delinquency of a minor with Hill-Brodigan facing an additional charge of open house party Hill-Brodigan and Anderson were placed on administrative leave and an interim principal was placed at Roosevelt Elementary School according to a statement from Brevard Public Schools said she "essentially lost her job," saying the district gave her the option to retire "or else." The issue has previously gone unaddressed at meetings despite members of the public calling on the board to discuss the district's handling of the situation In a January interview with FOX 35, School Board Chair Gene Trent said the incident "isn't anything new." adding that the police report appeared to indicate it was a teenage party "You cannot be a parent and not have seen of "I've read articles (about parties) that have led to students' deaths As far as I know … that didn't happen here." Cocoa Beach has nearly tripled the fees to operate a short-term vacation rental making it the highest such cost of any municipality in Brevard County The beachside city had found itself overwhelmed by vacation rentals with city officials estimating that one in every five single-family homes might be in use as a vacation rental the initial application cost was $525 with operators paying another $525 each subsequent year Now vacation-rental operators must pay $2,500 for the application and then an annual cost of $1,500 per year for single-family homes allowing condo associations to regulate the use of their properties with Mayor Keith Capizzi casting the sole vote against the measure Fines were also hiked for violating the city's rules around short-term rentals including instituting a $1,000 daily fee for every day a rental operates without a permit the city collected $100,306 in vacation rental fees which city officials said is not enough to pay for staff to enforce current rules The city believes many properties are operating without a permit but doesn't have sufficient staff to go after them Increasing the fees could allow the city to hire more enforcement staff in the future Currently the city's estimated cost for unregulated short-term rentals is more than $700,000 annually meaning that permanent residents are paying the difference Vacation rentals: 'Property rights issue'Short-term rentals have proved a controversial subject over recent years as they've become a popular way to generate revenue for homeowners but can have unpleasant effects on their surrounding communities described it as a "property rights issue" with mounting tension between opposing interests "The other side is the property rights of the people who own these vacation rentals to make money off their property," Williams said "But it doesn't always make it neighborly when you have these in a neighborhood." Jim Vadic an Indialantic resident who owns a short-term rental in Cocoa Beach appeared before the commission to describe the policy change as overkill I understand the fees being raised for non-compliance," Vadic said Others like Art Hitch said he moved here with his family decades ago and has always operated family motels "You have to do something to regulate and enforce these," Hitch said "I live in a residential neighborhood and you have some good ones and you have some nightmares and we know some are not registered." "You've got to do something," he added said the registration fees were "exorbitant" while acknowledging funding was needed for enforcement and that fines for violations should go up Capizzi said he didn't want to punish those who were "doing it right." The city of Cocoa Beach this week has been moving into its brand new City Hall Cocoa Beach Mayor Keith Capizzi said the opening of the new City Hall was a step forward and would bring a welcome home for city staff who have been working out of the city's public works building during construction The new facility is on the same site as the former city hall, which was called "undersized lacking necessary spaces and has falling into disrepair" by city staff More: SpaceX pushing boundaries: Fram2 crew launches from Kennedy Space Center to polar orbit The 29,900-square-foot facility features a community room with kitchen according to Rockledge-based W+J Construction The building also features a large outdoor green space with a performance stage for future events City Commissioners approved the $11 million project after a smaller one-story City Hall had been previously considered The process of replacing the old city hall went through years of debate before settling on the new facility City officials and personnel will occupy secure office spaces on the second floor which will also house the Cocoa Beach City Commission chamber "It's nice to just finally get it situated It was confusing for some people with City Hall being in public works and now city staff will have a designated place to work," he said "We're still in the process of moving in," Capizzi said "They're moving different departments in at different times It's nice to finally have the project done It'll be a nice place to hang out for Friday Fest."
