Metro announced Thursday that nearly seven miles of bus-only lanes near the Silver Spring
and Glenmont Red Line stations will remain until at least December
with bus shuttle operations ending on Saturday
The Takoma station reopened ahead of schedule at the end of June
will still benefit from the temporary lanes
more than 15,000 average daily riders use the Metrobus and Ride On routes on Georgia Avenue and Colesville Road
“Dedicated bus lanes are the most efficient use of existing roadway space, moving the greatest number of people in a bus in the least amount of space (compared to single occupancy vehicles),” Metro said in a press release
“It’s also a safer and low-cost way of moving more people through a corridor without widening roads.”
“I appreciate the extension of the pilot project to allow us to explore options for improved and more equitable access along this corridor,” said Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich
“Bus lanes across the region have increased reliability and decreased travel time for bus passengers
We want to improve the service for our existing riders – many of whom are low income
or have disabilities – and demonstrate to potential new riders that the bus can be an attractive transportation option.”
“The Moore-Miller Administration is focused on moving people not just vehicles and by continuing to study these temporary bus lanes
we are showing our commitment to providing a safe
equitable transportation system for all users,” said Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul J
“These temporary bus lanes are a successful collaboration between the Maryland Department of Transportation
and Metro and highlight a low-cost project that has a high impact on the communities it serves
Extending the pilot through the end of the year will allow us to evaluate the project’s effectiveness and examine opportunities to speed up buses through additional targeted bus lane improvements in Maryland.”
“We are thankful for the collaboration with Maryland and Montgomery County,” said Metro General Manager Randy Clarke
“Dedicated bus lanes are one of the best tools to move many people through a corridor quickly
We are excited to see the results of this pilot and are encouraged by Maryland’s efforts to increase bus speeds.”
Metro said it would work with the Maryland and Montgomery County transportation departments to analyze data
and review the impact of dedicated travel lanes to buses during school sessions and when the region’s workforce returns from summer travels

Nash & Smash has announced a new opening timeframe for its location at the Woodmoor Shopping Center in December
Va.-based chain had experienced unexpected issues with their buildout contractor and apologized for the delay
“We are committed to bringing our restaurant to life and are currently planning to open before [the] end of December,” the company said
A specific opening date has yet to be announced, but a Reddit post suggests the restaurant plans to open before December 15:
Nash & Smash describes itself as the “ultimate destination for fried chicken
and more.” After several years of development
the restaurant opened its first location in Manassas last February and has since opened several other locations in the region
and has partnered with Kallisto Steakhouse
and Peri-Peri Original for pop-up locations
Peri-Peri Original has multiple locations in the area, including one at Colesville Center
“People love our sandwiches,” owner Zayan Abbassi said to MoCo360 in August, noting that he decided to open at the Woodmoor Shopping Center because of the area’s bustling environment, public transportation options, and proximity to other eateries and Montgomery Blair High School.
In addition to chicken sandwiches and smash burgers, Nash & Smash’s menu includes fried chicken tenders and wings, mac and cheese, waffle fries, and mocktails. The restaurant’s menu items are halal, and the smash burgers are available in sizes ranging from 3 to 12 ounces to accommodate individual preferences.

The restaurant at 819 Ellsworth Drive in Downtown Silver Spring closed in late 2019
sold the chain’s 92 locations to franchisee Nicholas Perkins and his North Carolina-based Black Titan Holdings group
a subsidiary of Perkins’ Black Titan Investment Corporation
Luby’s had been working on the sale since late 2020 after shareholders approved the parent company’s dissolution and liquidation
Luby’s said the sale would also make Perkins and Black Titan Holdings the largest Fuddruckers franchise operators
“We’re excited to be purchasing Fuddruckers and look forward to working with Fuddruckers’ many dedicated
highly capable franchisees to further build this brand,” Perkins said in 2021
I have a vested interest in ensuring that all Fuddruckers franchisees have the resources
infrastructure and operational and marketing support they need to maximize their return on investment.”
A specific opening timeline has not been announced. Fuddruckers’ hearing before the county’s Board of License Commissioners is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on November 21.

DC man is $50,000 richer after purchasing a winning lottery scratch-off ticket from a Silver Spring Exxon station
“There are three things he does every day, a Washington, D.C. resident told Lottery officials this week. He drives a taxi, he drives for a ride-hailing service and he plays scratch-offs. All three paid off for him last week, although his $50,000 second-tier $1 Million Royale win topped the list
“I buy tickets when I stop for gas,” the hard-working driver explained
This was the case last week when our lucky winner pulled into Colesville Road Exxon for a fill-up
Deciding to splurge with the unexpected surplus of cash
the driver picked out a $20 $1 Million Royale instant ticket
He immediately ran his scratch-off through the store prize check scanner and was met with a sight he’d never before encountered
“I often see $5 or $50 wins on the scanner
but there were suddenly so many zeros.” Realizing that his excitement was about to get the better of him
the loyal player quickly made himself calm down
I was breathing so fast I felt like I was about to pass out
Our winner described the relief he experienced when the enormity of his win became clear
“There’s a debt that I’ve paid on and paid on
every day and every minute.” It seems that his $50,000 prize will free him of this obligation
a fact that he described as a “life-changer.”
$1 Million Royale still has four $1 million top prizes and two more $50,000 second-tier winners to offer
Our happy driver’s favorite gas station can be found at 8384 Colesville Road in Silver Spring.”
Responding officers found a bullet casing in the restaurant
Police said via email that officers from the 3rd District were sent to respond to a shooting in the 8600 block of Colesville Road at 6:03 p.m. on Sunday. Shortly after the shooting, a man arrived at Holy Cross Hospital with a gunshot wound to the back of his head

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (WJLA)— A black bear was spotted roaming in the Colesville area of Montgomery County this week
Montgomery Parks shared a photo of the bear along with a warning about black bears in populated areas
Most black bear sightings in Maryland happen between May and July when young bears are looking their own territory and food, according to a release from Montgomery Parks, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission
Black bears can cover a lot of territory and move through suburban and urban areas quickly
such as trash or compost bins and even bird feeders
residents should keep their distance; both for personal protection and to keep from risking startling the bear,” said Ryan Butler

“Bears can be observed and enjoyed from a distance with no need for fear or panic
but residents should take responsible actions.”
