Te-Biasu had to learn English in her journey to become a star
The clock ticked as Sarah Te-Biasu’s college career inched closer to its potential finish
Maryland women’s basketball had one chance to stay alive
the ball found its way into the graduate guard’s hands above the 3-point line
The climax of Te-Biasu’s journey sent College Park into a craze
a later steal helped send Maryland to the Sweet 16
Terps advance. pic.twitter.com/q9ck4AchLG
But her path to get there was far from linear
basketball wasn’t at the top of Te-Biasu’s mind
and I just ended up playing basketball with my friend at the park
and I just fell in love with the sport,” Te-Biasu said
Ending up in the United States — whether at VCU
or Maryland — once seemed unfathomable to her
She faced a language barrier; Te-Biasu’s native language is French
“I started to take an English class and watching TV or videos in English
Te-Biasu became a high school standout and committed to VCU
She now had to balance tougher competition on the court
while also dealing with the challenges of being in a new environment off it
“The English in Canada and America is similar
just with the accent and all that,” Te-Biasu said
but I was in an environment [where] all people were speaking English
so I had to – I forced myself to just speak English.”
standing out on the court and improving her confidence to communicate with her teammates
the transition to VCU was easy because of the help she got
They were helping me in school and all that basketball
The 5-foot-5 guard spent four seasons with the Rams
appearing in 107 games and starting in 103
Te-Biasu was selected to the All-Atlantic 10 Rookie Team and her 37.9% shooting from 3-point range led VCU
Te-Biasu followed that season up with back-to-back All-Atlantic 10 third team selections
She was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Year in her final year with the Rams
and lift … getting big with my physicality
and they helped me to just get stronger and all that,” Te-Biasu said
they helped me to understand the game a little bit more.”
The competition was harder and the expectations were higher
“The [Atlantic 10] and Big Ten is different,” Te-Biasu said
taller [in the Big Ten] and so I had to adjust with that.”
The Montreal native had a slow start to her only season at Maryland
She couldn’t manage to stand out among a highly talented roster
Te-Biasu was a mainstay in the starting lineup
I was shooting with confidence and playing with confidence and really aggressive on defense too,” Te-Biasu said
“But that really helped me to just believe in myself and just say
and it just helped me to be confident for the rest of the season.”
That confidence made her an X-factor when others were plagued with injuries down the stretch
“That’s who Sarah [Te-Biasu] is,” head coach Brenda Frese said
really taken over and commanded — just her presence
You saw the aggressive mentality … and the awareness and the time to be able to go score the basketball.”
The Terps faltered early in conference play
It all came to fruition in the final game of the regular season
the game was tied with seven seconds remaining
Te-Biasu got the ball and charged up the court
Teammate Shyanne Sellers — who was selected No
17 in the WNBA draft — counted that win as one of her favorite moments at Maryland

Georgia detained Charles Read for felony assault charges
alleging that he kicked down his ex-girlfriend's door and attempted to strangle her
Read is paraplegic—and has been for more than 20 years
police officers still handcuffed Read and tried to take him to jail
even as the same officers seemed unsure if it was physically possible for him to have committed the crime in the first place
So now that's gonna be up to you and the courts and your lawyers and her to establish your innocence," Officer Mark Belotte told Read in body camera footage obtained by Reason
It don't look like you could kick anything
a woman named Katherine Jensen called police and reported that Read
whom she claimed she had broken up with a few days prior
Jensen told police that she didn't want to press charges
officers obtained an arrest warrant for Read
It's unclear why it took police so long to detain Read
who said he had been in contact with police for more than a month before coming to the station
When Read arrived at the police station on March 20
Officer Mark Belotte—the same one who originally responded to Jensen's call in June—read Read his Miranda rights and began questioning him
Belotte asked if Read knew anyone named "Katherine Elizabeth Jensen," and Read replied that he had an old ex-girlfriend "from like 20 years ago," with that first and middle name
He also asked how long Read had been in his wheelchair
and Read said he had been paralyzed since he was 18
you forcefully entered her home and attacked her," Belotte said
I certainly didn't force my way into anybody's house," Read replied
Read insisted that he had no idea why he was being accused of forcibly entering Jensen's home and strangling her
pointing out that he had been paralyzed for the past several decades and was married
Belotte told Read that he was being arrested
Is this a joke?" Read said as Belotte handcuffed him
Read—who had told Belotte he had limited muscle control—fell out of his wheelchair and onto the floor
where officers left him for more than three and a half minutes
When Belotte later told another officer about this incident
footage captures the other officer assuming Read faked the fall: "it's a ruse
it's an obvious attempt not to go to jail," he said
a third officer expressed misgivings about Read's arrest
somebody must have made a mistake," the officer said to Read
that officer told Belotte that Read's legs looked similar to the limbs of some of his own family members who were paralyzed
indicating that Read wasn't lying about having been paralyzed for decades
"I would suggest calling the district attorney's office
let them know what you got," the officer told Belotte
"Because now it's looking like she might have made a false report."
Police may have had more reason to doubt the veracity of Jensen's claims had they conducted a brief internet search. Last year, Jensen was criminally charged after she made false allegations that Airbnb guests stole her property
Belotte insisted that Read would have to go to jail
and that it would be up to him to come up with the documentation proving his innocence at a later court hearing
argued with officers that his complex medical needs made taking him to the Fulton County jail particularly dangerous for his health
Read convinced officers to let him go on the promise that he would eventually turn himself in
he still had a felony arrest warrant out against him
In an email sent this week to the College Park Police Department obtained by Reason
"It has been brought to my attention that my mental state and physical trauma in that moment worked to confuse me into providing information that needs to be edited," she wrote
"Will you please contact me at your earliest convenience so I can edit the information in the report and clear the name of an [sic] innocent man." Still
while it was reasonable for police to critically examine whether Read could have committed the crime—say
if he had become paralyzed in the several months between the alleged incident and the detainment—it was their lack of curiosity about his claims of obvious innocence that troubled him
"It's not so much that they should have just said
he didn't do it.' But they should have been like: 'Let's not get the warrant yet
Let's do some more investigation because I'm not sure.' That's really what was missing," Fleischman says
part of a police officer's duty is not just to find probable cause
That's part of what they're supposed to do
And to do it in a reasonably prompt manner."
Fleischman tells Reason that police informed him the warrant was dismissed on Friday

Replacing some significant losses to the NFL Draft and in the transfer portal
head coach Mike Locksley is in desperate need for a season that will satisfy the fanbase
This week, CBS Sports released it's Post-Spring Big Ten Power Rankings and it's clear that there isn't much belief in the Terrapins at this moment
Maryland is currently sitting near the bottom at No
Here's what CBS had to say about the Terps at No
CBS Sports CFB Post-Spring Power Rankings / CBS"A recent recruiting surge indicates better days might be ahead for Maryland
The key is for Mike Locksley to do well enough to keep his job and reap the rewards
How impatient will the fanbase become if the Terrapins underwhelm like they did in a surprisingly poor four-win campaign last fall
Another low finish in the Big Ten standings is possible as Maryland effectively starts from scratch and relies on promising young talent after it saw six players drafted last week
Give blue-chip quarterback Malik Washington time to develop
and the Terps could be onto something."
It certainly sounds like a fair assessment of the current outlook for the program
but there's some new (and unproven) pieces to be excited about
But the prospect of future success won't be enough for Locksley to remain in his current position if the Terps have another underwhelming season in 2025
but the program needs a successful season now

A deadly scene shut down part of the Capital Beltway before dawn Monday after a man ditched his car and ran across I-495 in Prince George’s County — only to be fatally struck by a passing driver
The crash happened shortly before 3:15 a.m
Troopers from the Maryland State Police College Park Barrack were called to the inner loop of I-495
a Honda Civic was parked on the left shoulder of the outer loop
when “for unknown reasons the driver fled the vehicle and attempted to cross the lanes of the inner loop of I-495 on foot.”

In a somewhat shocking development, former Maryland star Shyanne Sellers was recently waived by the Golden State Valkyries
The Valkyries selected Sellers with the No
17 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft back in April
but apparently they didn't see enough from Sellers to keep their second-round pick on the roster

Sellars put together an impressive four-year career at the University of Maryland
becoming the first player in program history with 1,500 points
WNBA teams are limited to 12 players on the regular season roster
Valkyries head coach Natalie Nakase recently told reporters that Sellers was cut due to a lack of space
"She picked up everything we asked her to, did everything we asked. It's just that I have to choose the best 12 that are going to fit. Doesn't mean it's the most talented, it means it's the best 12," Nakase said, viaESPN's Kendra Andrews
it seems reasonable that another WNBA team could come calling for Sellers in the very near future

Queen consistently got better and better as the season went on
and Queen sent Maryland to the Sweet 16 after a buzzer-beating win over Colorado State in the Round of 32
and while the rest of the roster either transferred or were out of eligibility
Some analysts view Queen as high as fifth overall
it appears Queen is a lottery pick come draft night
In the latest mock draft, CBS Sports has the Portland Trailblazers taking Queen at 10th overall
Two centers in two consecutive drafts may seem duplicative after selecting Donovan Clingan in 2024 -- but in reality
Queen's game in Portland would help bring out some bright spots in Clingan's game
He's an old-school big who is a tremendous passer for his size and position
and could serve as an offensive hub to facilitate out of the painted area
With Maryland football kicker Jack Howes entering the transfer portal back in April, the Terrapins were left without a full-time kicker. But that changed when Richmond transfer Sean O'Haire committed to Maryland

he went a perfect 12-for-12 on field goals and 9-for-9 on PAT attempts
Even after playing in only four regular season games
O'Haire was the Spiders' third-leading scorer on the team
The Terrapins have had some struggles with the kicking game in the past two years
but if 2024 was any indication of the type of player O'Haire could be
this was a massive pickup for Mike Locksley

and he was responsible for a whopping 15 double-doubles during the season
Queen was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year

(Atlanta News First) — A metro Atlanta police department is under scrutiny after arresting a man for a violent home invasion
despite evidence casting doubt he could have committed the crime
Charles Read has been paralyzed for 25 years
He said he and Katherine Jensen dated at one time
but haven’t had contact with each other for 20 years
But according to a June 15, 2024, complaint, Jensen told College Park, Georgia, police that Read broke into her home
saying it’s not physically possible for him to do what she claimed he did
“She said I kicked in the door,” Read explained
“I’m in a wheelchair and have been for 25 years.”
Body camera footage shows Katherine telling police his name and date of birth
describing him as medium height and wearing all black
“She never mentioned he was in a wheelchair,” said Andrew Fleischman
especially if they’re running away on foot.”
He said College Park officers never called
or verified Jensen’s claims before charging him with aggravated assault
Read said he was at a dinner party with friends the night of the alleged incident
had no idea there was a warrant for his arrest
He only learned of it when the federal government alerted him during a passport renewal process
Read then contacted College Park Police officer Markenley Bolette - who originally responded to Jensen’s home - and agreed to meet at the police department this past March
“I essentially surrendered myself because I was that innocent,” Read said
he was questioned and then arrested in the lobby
Bolette is seen on body camera video placing handcuffs on Read despite his protests it could cause him to fall
“[Officers] literally sat there,” Read said
“They just watched me writhe on the ground.”
It’s an obvious attempt not to go to jail.” But another officer pushed back: “You may want to call the district attorney’s office
Body camera video later showed Bolette acknowledging doubts about Jensen’s story
“Now it’s looking like she made a false report,” he said on camera
Records obtained by Atlanta News First Investigates show Jensen was arrested in 2023 for a different case, by Newnan Police
information Fleishman said was available in a statewide database
but never mentioned in the College Park incident report
“I’ve never seen a case where somebody was so clearly innocent
and it would take so little work to establish it
and nobody was willing to do the work,” Fleischman said
In an email sent to a College Park detective this week
“My mental state and physical trauma in that moment worked to confuse me..
please contact me… so I can edit the information in the report and clear the name of an innocent man.”
Jensen has not been arrested for filing a false report in Read’s case
Fleischman said a Fulton County district attorney’s representative has indicated the charges against Read will be dropped
Read said the College Park Police Department has not apologized for the incident
“Not a single bit; I haven’t heard a word from them,” he said
“We’ve been trying to get into communication with them repeatedly
Jensen did not respond to requests for comment
but her mother said Jensen now acknowledges Read did not attack her
The City of College Park is currently looking into this matter with care and consideration
We understand the importance of resolving this situation and appreciate your patience as we conduct a thorough investigation
A representative from the City of College Park responded saying they are “conducting a thorough investigation.”
a representative from College Park confirmed the district attorney has dropped the charges against Read
