the decision to go to college or get a credential hinges on one critical factor: whether they can afford it
Programs like the Washington College Grant and the College Bound Scholarship are meant to make that decision easier
by covering some or all of tuition or more for thousands of low- and middle-income students
These constitute what is widely regarded as the most generous state financial aid program in the country
Washington has one of the lowest FAFSA completion rates in the country
remains a concern as industries across the state report a growing need for skilled workers with college degrees
We want to understand better how Washingtonians are thinking about college
and the role that financial aid plays in that decision
or gave up on school or training altogether
your experience can help shed light on what’s working and what’s not in Washington’s financial aid system

SUNY Westchester Community College saw increased academic achievement after adopting the CUNY ASAP model
Jacob Wackerhausen/iStock/Getty Images Plus
Providing students with wraparound support is one evidence-based practice that has demonstrated impact on student credit accumulation
the City University of New York created a model of student support that has been duplicated at dozens of colleges to improve outcomes; now the State University of New York system hopes to build on this success on its own campuses
despite headwinds from remote instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic
The background: CUNY created Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) in 2007 as a comprehensive initiative to address barriers to student retention and completion
The core components of ASAP are personalized academic advising
specialized enrollment options and financial aid for course material and transportation costs for three years
ASAP-inspired programs have been implemented at over a dozen institutions in seven states
WCC president Belinda Miles was a part of the ASAP replication initiative in Ohio in 2014
“it wasn’t too long before I ran into ASAP,” she said
Arnold Ventures and MDRC, along with an anonymous donor to the WCC Foundation, provided financial support for the launch of Viking ROADS
In 2023, SUNY chancellor John B. King Jr. announced the system would implement ASAP at 25 of its 64 campuses starting in 2024
results from a three-year MDRC evaluation of Westchester Community College’s program offer guiding principles to peer institutions scaling their own efforts
“We’re delighted to be that pivot campus and a leader amongst our peers,” Miles said
The study: MDRC’s study followed WCC staff and students from 2018 to 2021
Viking ROADS requires WCC students to be enrolled full-time in an eligible major
meet with a dedicated counselor and use college support services monthly
a first-time college student and only enrolled in one developmental education course
A majority of students involved in the Viking ROADS study were traditional college students
with about one in five identifying as a nontraditional student (defined as someone who is older than 24
has children or does not have a high school diploma)
One adaptation of ASAP that Viking ROADS staff implemented was to offer a transportation stipend
rather than a prepaid MetroCard; WCC is a commuter campus and students utilize both their own cars and public transport to reach campus
so having flexibility in how they addressed transportation barriers was key
program participants were more likely to have higher enrollment rates over time and complete more credits
20 percent of program participants had earned degrees
compared with 13.3 percent of control group students
35 percent of program participants had completed an associate degree
compared to 23 percent of the control group
Researchers theorized this gap could be tied to the specialized course enrollment options and academic advising Viking ROADS participants receive
which could help students meet their course requirements and reduce their risk of earning excess credits that don’t support degree completion
“It’s critical that students begin with a person and a plan
here are the steps you take.’ But having a person that’s reliable is something that is critical for students
particularly first-generation students,” Miles said
because some learners may not have supporters at home who understand the bureaucracy of higher education
Program staff also reduce barriers to applying for graduation and making degrees official; among nonparticipants who earned 60 or more credits
compared to 83 percent of Viking ROADS students
“Despite the challenges that were posed by the COVID-19 pandemic
Viking ROADS still had large effects on three-year graduation rates
confirming the strength and adaptability of the ASAP model,” according to the report
“Viking ROADS not only helped students navigate the immediate disruptions that were caused by the pandemic but also supported their continued academic progress and degree attainment.”
What’s next: In the same way Miles brought her work with ASAP to WCC
she and her staff plan to contribute to a community of practice for the other SUNY campuses joining these efforts
“I’m happy to share with colleagues what our story is and how we keep it going and how we keep expanding
Funding and providing resources for wraparound services can be a barrier to scaling initiatives
but reallocating and redesigning existing services to better address student needs is one way Miles said she is looking to expand student success efforts at WCC

Only three active college football coaches have won a national championship
Each member of that championship trio is in the top three of our USA TODAY rankings of the nation's top 25 coaches
The rest of the top 10 includes coaches who could conceivably capture a national championship one day
based on their winning track records and presence at programs with enough clout to thrive
The Big Ten leads all conferences with eight coaches ranked in our top 25, followed by the SEC's seven
Those two conferences account for nine of the coaches ranked within our top 10
These rankings reflect an aggregate of the ballots of five USA TODAY sportswriters who each voted for their top 25
Here are our USA TODAY top 25 college football coaches:
with an SEC championship and a College Football Playoff berth
He raised Georgia’s bar to annual expectations of a national championship
Smart remains an elite recruiter and developer
Beating Notre Dame in January for his first national title as head coach launched Day into the elite tier
Day enters his seventh year as the full-time coach with an overall record of 70-10 and a 46-5 mark in Big Ten play
If he maintains this pace through his 10th year
Day’s winning percentage of 87.5% would rank second all-time among FBS coaches
LOOKING AHEAD: Big Ten leads too-early Top 25 after spring
Dabo Swinney (Clemson)Swinney will not go quietly from his perch atop the ACC
Just when you think he might be slipping in this evolved college football world
And his roster this season is in better shape
Swinney’s aversion to transfers will be a hurdle to winning a third national championship
develop and retain mantra keeps Clemson as the ACC’s most consistent force
He’s the rare coach who rivals Smart’s recruiting chops
and he’s an excellent quarterback developer
was re-instilling the beef and toughness at the line of scrimmage the Longhorns lacked for too many years
Sarkisian has instituted the ingredients necessary for Texas to hunt national titles
James Franklin (Penn State)A national championship continues to elude Franklin and the Nittany Lions
though last year’s team notched a pair of playoff wins to reach the semifinals
While detractors will focus on what he isn't
Franklin has returned Penn State to national prominence and crafted a Hall of Fame-worthy résumé
a title would force a drastic re-evaluation of Franklin's career
Lanning is one of the biggest names among the next wave of coaches
Freeman seems to have cracked the code at Notre Dame after a bit of an uneven start to his time as head coach
though early growing pains were expected after the school promoted the then-35-year-old defensive coordinator late in the 2021 season
After the Irish suffered some head-scratching losses in 2022 and 2023
last year's team lost just once in the regular season before topping Indiana
Freeman's program stands poised to annually compete for the playoff and the national title
Kalen DeBoer (Alabama)DeBoer’s Alabama career endured a bumpy debut
but didn’t we all expect that replacing Nick Saban would be a challenge
DeBoer has proven himself a winner at one coaching stop after another
Pencil him in for at least nine wins annually
his team must play with more discipline and consistency
9. Lane Kiffin (Mississippi)Kiffin once envied the coaches' statues at Alabama. Now, he says, he’s less consumed by the idea of a statue
If he keeps winning like he has at Ole Miss
He’s the Rebels' best coach since Johnny Vaught
He keeps crushing the transfer portal and developing good quarterbacks
Kelly quietly turned LSU into Quarterback U
with Garrett Nussmeier following Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels
he hasn’t found the right formula for LSU’s defense
Kelly showed a warmer embrace to transfers this offseason that might fix the defense
Kelly remains an indefatigable force for posting at least nine wins
It's easy to forget where Iowa State was when it hired Campbell
The Cyclones had three consecutive seasons of at least nine losses and just one finish in the coaches' poll since the 1991 season
Campbell has turned the Cyclones from an afterthought to a team that has seven bowl trips in eight seasons
He's the winningest coach in school history with 64 victories and led ISU to its first double-digit win total last year
Campbell has been mentioned as a candidate at larger programs
but he has stayed and made this one of the country's biggest overachievers
Kyle Whittingham (Utah)It's hard to envision the Utes rising to become a premier program before Whittingham took the baton from Urban Meyer before the team's 2004 bowl game
he has positioned a program with limited history into a perennial contender for conference titles behind a consistently stingy defense
The highlights include 167 wins in Whittingham's tenure with 16 bowl appearances and Pac-12 titles in Utah's final two seasons in the league
Whittingham is expected to step down in the coming seasons with assistant Morgan Scalley due to take over the job
Curt Cignetti (Indiana)All Cignetti does is win
Last year’s team was the feel-good story of the Power Four after losing just once in the regular season and booking a playoff berth
Whether or not that’s sustainable is moot: Cignetti has worked wonders at every stop along the way in a head coaching career that began on the Division II level
He's 130-37 overall across four college stops
The longest-tenured coach in the FBS and the dean of the Big Ten coaching community continues to stack winning seasons
Iowa has won at least eight games in every non-COVID season since 2015 and has posted a losing record just once since 2006
While his preferred style of play has its detractors
you can’t argue with the Hawkeyes’ consistent success punching above their weight and annual push for a major bowl
An old-school approach has helped Klieman lead his teams to winning records every season but one since he started at North Dakota State in 2014
with the 2020 campaign impacted by COVID-19 the only year they missed a bowl game
Kansas State still won at least nine games the past three years
He’ll make sure you’re punching at or above your weight
Now that the Louisville native is home coaching the Cardinals
he should settle in for a consistent run of ACC relevance
Josh Heupel (Tennessee)If Tennessee didn't hit rock bottom after firing Jeremy Pruitt amid an NCAA investigation
it at least could reach down and touch the bottom
Then Josh Heupel arrived and pulled the Vols out of peril
He jolted Tennessee’s offense to life with his warp-speed system
he made the playoff by building a good defense
Rhule is starting to pull Nebraska back toward relevancy
just as he did during previous stints at Temple and Baylor
His disciplined approach should yield a breakthrough for the Cornhuskers in 2025
After turning the Owls into a Group of Five power and cleaning up a messy situation with the Bears
performing a third FBS turnaround would bolster Rhule’s case for being seen as one of the top rebuilders in the sport
Bielema and his meat-and-potatoes style has yielded another Big Ten winner at Illinois
the Illini head into 2025 with a major shot at the playoff with one of the most experienced rosters in the Power Four
He’s clearly back in his comfort zone in the Big Ten after a failed five-year run at Arkansas
Bielema won 68 games and led teams to three Rose Bowl appearances in seven seasons at Wisconsin
Sitake took over his alma mater when it was operating as an independent
He raised BYU's profile with a pair of double-digit win seasons prior to joining the Big 12 for the 2023 season
the Cougars went 11-2 last season and were just a few plays from being in the playoff
as it has seven bowl appearances in Sitake's nine seasons
Lance Leipold (Kansas)Leipold is one of the rare examples of a coach rising from outside Division I to a job at a Power Four conference
He won six national titles at Wisconsin-Whitewater before giving up the comfort of being one of the dominant Division III schools to take over at Buffalo
The Bulls went to three bowl games in a row at the end of his six-year tenure before arriving at Kansas in 2021
Leipold's success is modest by some standards with 22 wins and two bowl appearances in four seasons
But when you consider the Jayhawks had nine victories in the previous six years
this is clearly one of the great rebuilding jobs in recent history
the Mustangs made a breezy transition from the American Athletic Conference to the ACC
His teams consistently beat up on most of their conference opponents
a handy trick considering in-conference excellence provides an avenue to the playoff
Lashlee elevated SMU to a level of relevance not seen since its rule-flouting Pony Express days
Riley’s reputation has suffered with the Trojans' 13-11 mark over the past two years
marking the first major test of a coaching career that had gone extremely well through his first six seasons in charge at USC and Oklahoma
That's led to some doubts over whether his offensive style is suited to succeed in the Big Ten
But Riley went 11-3 in his debut at USC and made three playoff appearances at Oklahoma
where he went 55-10 overall with four top-six finishes in the coaches' poll
He's also the only coach in FBS history to coach three different Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks
Drinkwitz made winning 21 games the past two seasons look much easier than it’s historically been for Missouri
His best move was surrendering play-calling before the 2023 season so he could focus more on being the program’s CEO
Missouri packs a punch in the portal sweepstakes
Mario Cristobal (Miami)Recruiting is Cristobal’s super-skill
He’s a consistent force in assembling talent
which remains the surest path to success in this sport
He’s proven himself as a recruiter of both high school prospects and transfers
Cristobal must develop his game-day coaching chops
Miami flubbed a playoff opportunity last season by losing winnable games
Jeff Monken (Army) and Kenny Dillingham (Arizona State)
Members of the College Football Playoff Selection Committee are charged with creating the official CFP Top 25 rankings and then appointing the final 12 teams to be included in the playoff.
“We are pleased to have Troy and Jeff join the committee,” College Football Playoff executive director Rich Clark said in a statement.
“Troy berings a long commitment to college athletics to our group and previous experience as a member of the FCS Selection Committee, while Jeff, as the first chairman of the CFP selection committee (2014-15) will step in immediately and provide an experienced voice in the room.”
Dannen previously served as a member of the NCAA Constitution Committee and the Division I Transformation Committee, and was the former chairman of the NCAA Football Competition Committee and a member of the Football Oversight Committee.
Long has a 40-year experience working as a former coach and administrator, including a 22-year stretch in tenures as the athletic director at Kansas, Arkansas, Pittsburgh, and Eastern Kentucky.
He also served on the NCAA Management Council, the NCAA Sports and Wagering Task Force, and the NCAA Championships/Sports Management Cabinet.

BY BRUCE CRUMLEY @BRUCEC_INC
As a recent Inc. article noted, a rising number of college graduates have doubts about the “wage premium” their diplomas were expected to provide by commanding better than average starting pay—especially compared to the levels of student debt they assumed to pay tuition
But recent data shows their disgruntlement is likely rooted in the specific of kinds degrees those employees chose while in school
instead of alternative that command up to double the amount of early- and mid-career salaries
while members of the latter cohort were paid about $80,000
Graduates who studied any kind of engineering—computer
and others—fared much better than most peers by earning median entry salaries of $70,000 to $80,000
Those rose to $115,000 to $125,000 by mid-career
That compared to social services and general education majors who tend to start work at around $42,000
and take in $49,000 to $54,000 midway through their professional lives
“Majors providing technical training—that is, quantitative and analytical skills—earn the highest return
and business and economics,” the authors of a New York Fed report said of current today’s “wage premium” dynamics
and leisure and hospitality earn relatively low returns.”
But the study didn’t find everyone who chose degrees commanding lower early salaries wound up being stuck there forever
the mean starting wages of people who studied anthropology began at $42,000 before rising to $60,000 mid-career
Those who chose foreign languages and performing arts progressed from $40,00 and $42,000 respectively to $70,000 later on
often reflected how—and for whom—people decided to put their acquired knowledge to work
Graduates with general education degrees taking jobs with nongovernmental organizations or charities
do so knowing they’ll almost certainly be paid less than if they pursued corporate work
So what’s the New York Fed’s verdict on the value of a college degree for both former student workers and their employers
“After rising significantly in the 1980s and early 1990s
the return (on) college (tuition) has held between 12 and 13 percent for the past three decades and was 12.5 percent in 2024—easily exceeding the threshold for a sound investment,” the report said
it also pointed to an earlier part of the study homing in on the 25th percentile of graduates whose degrees fetched the lowest starting salaries
That analysis found most of those people wound up making about as about as much in mean mid-career salaries as workers who had stopped studies after high school
“There is very little difference between the two groups
with an annual college wage premium of well under $10,000,” the authors said
we estimate a 2.6 percent rate of return for the 25th percentile of college graduates in 2024
making college a questionable investment for this group… (Meaning) for at least a quarter of college graduates
college does not appear to pay off.”That would help explain the Indeed survey that found a third of college graduate employees viewing their degrees as a waste of time and money
the choice of major is a decision that students alone control—as are both the types of jobs they decide to take afterwards
and foreign language diplomas may well never command the bigger salaries that trained engineers do
But the ultimate value of those former degrees will depend largely on how well the people who earned them put them to work for their employers
and use them to contribute to the business’s success

College Baseball, MLB Draft, Prospects – Baseball America
In a season defined by volatility at the top, Georgia is the latest team to ascend to No. 1 in the Baseball America College Baseball Top 25
becoming the fifth program to hold the top spot after Texas A&M
Arkansas and Texas all took turns in pole position
Georgia’s rise under head coach Wes Johnson has been nothing short of transformational
When Johnson took over ahead of the 2024 season
the program had failed to make the NCAA Tournament in six of its previous nine years and hadn’t advanced past the regional round since 2008
Johnson has rewritten expectations in Athens and the Bulldogs’ surge to that point mirrors the aggressive strategy that has come to define their coach’s tenure
After guiding Georgia to its first Super Regional appearance in 15 years last spring
He re-recruited key returners and mined the transfer portal for instant-impact talent
building a lineup overflowing with firepower
have both emerged as Player of the Year contenders
Nolan McCarthy (Kentucky) and Devin Obee (Duke) added much-needed outfield depth and thump
Returners like Slate Alford and Kolby Branch have been key as well
providing steady infield production and leadership on a roster that has come together quickly
The result is a Georgia offense that leads the nation in home runs and isolated power (ISO)
That offensive dominance has helped compensate for a pitching staff that ranks outside the top 100 nationally in both team ERA and starting pitcher innings
While Georgia has struggled to find balance on the mound
the Bulldogs have dropped just two weekend sets all season
That consistency—paired with their explosive offense and top-ranked RPI—made them a logical choice to rise to No
the honor represents more than just a temporary perch atop the rankings
It reflects the speed with which he has elevated Georgia from somewhat of an SEC afterthought to a national contender
Already the program record-holder for wins in a head coach’s first two seasons
Johnson has proven that he can build quickly and sustain success in one of the sport’s most cutthroat environments
1 predecessors have all stumbled not too long after earning the top spot with the average stay atop the rankings just three weeks
Tennessee owns the season’s longest reign at five weeks and Arkansas the shortest after bowing out just one week later
If the Bulldogs want to hold onto their place atop the rankings
they’ll need to do so on the road this week at No
before closing the regular season at home against former No
In a year where staying power has been rare and expectations have proven fragile
Georgia now carries the weight of being the best team in college baseball

Genth propelled himself to the top of NCAA D-III
“Harry’s always worked to try to find out how good he can be,” Haverford coach Dave Beccaria said
he wanted to find out if he’s good enough to play after college
I think the numbers show that he’s capable of doing some pretty great things

It’s no easy chore for BYU basketball players to escape the program’s soaring expectations
Whether it’s Joe Lunardi’s projection as a No
2 seed for next year’s NCAA Tournament or CBS Sports ranking BYU No
No one in Senegal or Mali is spending the summer worrying about whether BYU can reach the Final Four
They have weightier issues and fellow countrymen Keita and Mboup are returning home to lighten their load
“Those boys come back and give back at these (basketball) camps,” Utah businessman Carlos Iglesias told the “Y’s Guys” podcast recently
Iglesias supports the camps for Mike Clayton
who formed the non-profit Mali Wellness Foundation in 2016
“Even the schoolteachers and staff look at these young men and how they have really grown up with their opportunities.”
The initial goodwill missions by the foundation provided Mali with medical and dental services and health education
They also built their first basketball court
Iglesias and his team mixed the cement by hand using shovels and sticks
“Having kids come to those courts to play basketball gives them a reason to come to school,” Iglesias said
“Most of these courts are at school and school isn’t necessarily mandatory for them
We have to do something to keep these kids in school — so
earned opportunities to come to the United States to attend high school
Iglesias and his wife Kari are Keita’s American parents
They also assist other players who come to the U.S
“We do this to help these young men have a future,” Iglesias said
“Their parents are giving up these children for the future of their families and their villages and communities and we are seeing the fruits of our labor that we started in 2016 — to have college graduates start giving back to their communities.”
his motivation to assist in Mali and Senegal stems from his own childhood
in the inner-city neighborhoods of Los Angeles
‘If there was a way that I could give back one day
if I could just make enough money to make ends meet
“There is nothing better that touches the human heart than serving others
there are other people dealing with way more.”
There is no guarantee that the Cougars’ preseason hype won’t follow Keita and Mboup halfway around the world and they might even get asked a question or two about the globe’s top recruit AJ Dybantsa
This is indeed a different time for BYU basketball and for two weeks in June
these two Cougars are pausing on the present to go back in time to inspire the future — mentoring starstruck kids who will stand and shoot at the same baskets where they used to play before someone came to help them

Home / News / Arts & Humanities / Florida State University’s College of Music and School of Theatre collaborate for ‘Preview @ FSU’ series
Florida State University recently showcased the second annual “Preview @ FSU” series, a unique collaboration between the College of Music and the School of Theatre through the Music Theatre Program
“Amelia and Me,” written by Stacey Luftig and Phillip Palmer
tells the story of pioneering pilot Amelia Earhart and her friendship with fellow aviator Jackie Cochran
the musical explores the events leading up to Amelia’s final flight and highlights the bond between these two remarkable women
The series is a new works initiative that provides a platform for students to work closely with professional writers and composers
offering the students hands-on experience in the early stages of musical development
we aim to provide our students with the opportunity to be part of a new musical in its early stages,” said Alisa Hauser
assistant professor of music theatre and program director
“This experience is crucial for their professional preparation
as it mirrors the work they will do in the industry after graduation
The series not only benefits the students but also provides invaluable support to the writers and composers.”
Developing a new musical theatre production takes a lot of resources
This program gives students the chance to build their skills by participating from start to finish in the process
student stage managers and assistants,” Hauser said
and it is something that writers are hungry for.”
The performance was held at the Augusta Conradi Studio Theatre
providing an intimate setting for this powerful story
“One of the most heartwarming moments during the performance of ‘Amelia and Me’ was when
we unexpectedly discovered that members of Amelia Earhart and Jackie Cochran’s distant family were in the audience,” said Chari Arespacochaga
associate professor at the School of Theatre and director of the MFA Directing program
“It was such a surprise and added a special connection to our performance
knowing that we were sharing this story with people who have a personal link to Amelia’s legacy.”
Arespacochaga said students contribute significantly to the developing production
highlighting strengths of the interpretive vision and helping identify areas for potential improvement
“The experience gained through the ‘Preview @ FSU’ series is invaluable for our students
It prepares them to face real-world challenges in music theatre
They leave the program not only with a deep understanding of their craft but also with the confidence to navigate the complexities of the professional world.”
“The experience gained through the ‘Preview @ FSU’ series is invaluable for our students,” she said
“It prepares them to face real-world challenges in music theatre
BFA Music Theatre senior students Teegan SinClair
learned to pivot and trust the creative process
“It’s a special process because things change and pivot as we go
and we get to know the people who have created the piece,” Ennen said
“This is the perfect opportunity to do it first at school
and I have my trusted teachers by my side to help me through it.”
The students’ unique opportunity to perform “Amelia and Me” and their dedication have showcased the benefits of having hands-on experience in musical theater
“Being part of ‘Amelia and Me’ has been transformative for me as a performer,” SinClair said
“The process of taking notes and adjusting our performances to better align with the vision of the writers has taught me so much about adaptability and collaboration
I’ve learned to trust my instincts while also being open to feedback and changes
This hands-on experience has truly broadened my understanding of the complexities involved in bringing a new musical to life.”

At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles
Benita Fitzgerald Mosley won the gold medal in the 100-meter hurdles by 4/100th of a second over the favorite
Olympic gold medalist and visionary executive Benita Fitzgerald Mosley says it has been her lifelong mission to help people win gold medals in business—and in life
“My gold medal is the gift that keeps on giving,” Fitzgerald Mosley says
Fitzgerald Mosley highlights five “Olympic rings” to help people achieve their goals: Have a good start
power through hurdles and have a strong finish
“Why can’t I be the best in the world at what I do?”
From becoming the first African American woman to win the 100-meter hurdles at the 1984 Olympics to her current role as chief executive officer of Multiplying Good
Fitzgerald Mosley has persistently broken barriers and advanced the idea that sport has the power to inspire and change the world
Her enormous impact as a results-oriented leader in the Olympic, non-profit, and corporate worlds is why Dean Jeremy Jordan asked Fitzgerald Mosley to be the keynote speaker at the Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics Convocation at 12:30 p.m
“Benita’s ‘why not me?’ message encourages us to challenge societal expectations and embrace our potential
while Multiplying Good is helping people bring about positive change and inspiring them to do more,” Jordan says
“The life lessons and insights that Benita will share May 10 will provide valuable inspiration to our graduates and all of us.”
Using Fitzgerald Mosley’s five Olympic rings
Fitzgerald Mosley often uses a quote from former American politician and motivational speaker Les Brown
“You don’t have to be great to get started
Fitzgerald Mosley started running track in the seventh grade and soon became a star hurdler
were both educators and they encouraged Fitzgerald Mosley to get started in as many extracurricular activities as possible in their hometown of Dale City
Fitzgerald Mosley discovered what she loved and was good at and where to focus her attention
“They were very supportive and stood by me in every aspect of my life,” Fitzgerald Mosley says of her parents
While she became the first chair flute for the Gar-Field High School symphonic band
Fitzgerald Mosley says she wasn’t very good at softball and grew too tall to be a gymnast
But middle school physical education teacher
family friend and gymnastics coach Gwen Washington was also the coach of the track team and when it became obvious that Fitzgerald Mosley had outgrown gymnastics
Washington suggested she join the track team because she had seen Fitzgerald Mosley outrun the boys in gym classes
“So I went out for the track team and started winning races from the very beginning,” Fitzgerald Mosley says
“It wasn’t until I was 12 years old and in the seventh grade that I even discovered my athletic prowess.”
As a high school freshman sprinter and hurdler
Fitzgerald Mosley helped the track team win its fourth consecutive Virginia state championship
who represented the United States in the high jump in the 1976 Olympics and qualified for the team in 1980
also led the girl’s gymnastics and basketball teams to state championships
During a visit to Falk College in early April
Benita Fitzgerald Mosley met with students to share her experiences in the sport industry
you can be an Olympian someday just like Paula,’ and I looked at her like she was from Mars,” Fitzgerald Mosley says
“But having a coach believe in you and say that to a youngster at 14 years old
Fitzgerald Mosley was 18 and already a track star—and an industrial engineering major—at the University of Tennessee
where she would become a 14-time All-American and four-time NCAA hurdles champion
she made the 1980 Olympic team but didn’t participate because the United States led a boycott of the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow to protest the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan
she was still in college and had the benefit of having access to coaching
training equipment and the highest level of competition in college
This was a time when Olympic athletes were strictly amateurs who couldn’t make money off their athletic achievements
and many athletes who qualified for the 1980 Games
people didn’t have these long careers spanning three and four and five Olympic Games that started with my generation because they started to allow us to make money while we were competing,” Fitzgerald Mosley says
“The two other hurdlers that were on the Olympic team with me in 1980 didn’t make it again in 1984
so that was their one and only chance to be an Olympian.”

An Assembly committee on Monday advanced a bill supported by NJBIA
to modernize county college contract law to ensure the lowest bidder does not automatically win a contract if the college has had a prior negative experience with that contractor
sponsored by Assemblywoman Heather Simmons (D-3)
was unanimously released by the Assembly Higher Education Committee
The bill is also strongly supported by the New Jersey Council of County Colleges
which testified in support of the legislation
The bill would update county college contracts law to align with changes made recently to state college procurement law
including allowing for the automatic disqualification of bidders whom the college has had a negative experience with in the prior 15 years
such as defaulting on a prior contract or providing unsatisfactory service delivery
the disqualification process would include written notice to the bidder and an opportunity for a hearing where mitigating factors could be considered
such as the business being under new ownership
NJBIA Vice President of Government Affairs Althea D
Ford said the bill would enable the community college procurement process to run more efficiently and cost-effectively

What a weekend we just got on the diamond. With just two weeks now remaining until the regular season ends, every game feels like it’s worth even more this time of the year. That was on display this past week, and there are notable changes throughout D1Baseball’s top 25 rankings because of it.
There were five series between ranked teams over the weekend. They were No. 1 Texas at No. 11 Arkansas, No. 3 Clemson at No. 5 Florida State, No. 10 Auburn at No. 12 Tennessee, No. 18 Alabama at No. 15 Vanderbilt, and No. 23 Ole Miss at No. 21 Oklahoma.
While No. 1 Texas being swept by No. 11 Arkansas is the story of the weekend, they weren’t the only top team to go down. No. 2 LSU and No. 3 Clemson both lost their weekend series, too. 12 teams entered their series finale in a rubber game, needing a win to avoid the series loss.
Once again, the top five looks very different and that’s far from the only change in this week’s D1Baseball top 25 rankings. Here’s how the full rankings look.
Previous Ranking: No. 1Weekly Record: 1-3Overall Record: 38-8 (19-5 in SEC)
Texas kicked off its week with an 11-2 victory over Prairie View on Tuesday, and then hit the road for a pivotal SEC series at No. 11 Arkansas. There, the Longhorns struggled immensely, especially in Thursday’s opener, losing 9-0. Texas went on to lose 6-1 on Friday and 13-8 on Saturday, suffering a sweep. Still, the Longhorns hold firm at No. 1 in D1Baseball’s top 25.
Previous Ranking: No. 5 (+3)Weekly Record: 2-1Overall Record: 33-10 (14-7 in ACC)
Florida State hosted No. 3 Clemson over the weekend, a massive series with big implications on both the ACC standings and the D1Baseball top 25. The Seminoles came away with a 6-5, extra-innings win on Friday to start the series, but fell 6-3 in the first game on Sunday. That set up a rubber game in the finale, where FSU erupted with a 20-9 victory.
Previous Ranking: No. 2 (-1)Weekly Record: 2-2Overall Record: 38-11 (15-9 in SEC)
LSU’s week started with a 15-2 midweek win over Southeastern Louisiana, entering the weekend at Texas A&M with momentum. While the Aggies won 3-1 in the first game on Saturday, the Tigers bounced back in the second game of the doubleheader with a 2-1 win to set up a decisive rubber game on Sunday. There, LSU fell again, 6-4, to drop the series.
Previous Ranking: No. 4Weekly Record: 2-0Overall Record: 35-10 (15-9 in ACC)
While North Carolina did not have a series over the weekend, they did have a pair of midweek games on Tuesday and Wednesday. Against George Mason on Tuesday, the Tar Heels won 13-4. They then dominated again on Wednesday, defeating Queens 14-3 to end a short week.
Previous Ranking: No. 6 (+1)Weekly Record: 3-1Overall Record: 33-13 (16-8 in Big Ten)
Oregon’s week started at No. 7 Oregon State, the fourth consecutive game between the two rivals. The Ducks again had the last laugh, winning 8-4 to take all four games. They then traveled to Michigan State over the weekend, falling 2-0 in Friday’s opener. Oregon won 13-5 on Saturday to even the series, forcing a rubber game on Sunday. There, Oregon prevailed with a 3-1 win to take the series and enter the top five in this week’s D1Baseball top 25.
Previous Ranking: No. 9 (+3)Weekly Record: 4-0Overall Record: 39-11 (15-9 in SEC)
Georgia’s week got underway on Tuesday, earning a 9-2 midweek victory against Kennesaw State. The Bulldogs then traveled to Missouri over the weekend, winning 9-2 on Friday and 5-2 on Saturday to clinch the series. Georgia wanted the sweep on Sunday, and got it with a 4-2 victory.

Arkansas entered the week with three consecutive series losses
but that didn’t stop them from playing exceptionally well against No
6-1 on Friday and 13-8 on Saturday to finish off the sweep
and have soared back up in D1Baseball’s top 25 rankings
10 (+2)Weekly Record: 3-1Overall Record: 33-15 (13-11 in SEC)
Auburn kicked off its week against Samford
Tennessee responded with a 5-4 win in the second game
one that was suspended and completed on Sunday
Auburn prevailed with a 8-1 win to take the series
3 (-6)Weekly Record: 1-2Overall Record: 37-12 (14-10 in ACC)
Clemson did not get in a game during the midweek slate
but had a massive series over the weekend at No
FSU won the opener 6-5 in 11 innings on Friday night
but Clemson won 6-3 on Sunday in the front end of a doubleheader
where Clemson fell 20-9 to lose the series and drop in D1Baseball’s top 25
7 (-3)Weekly Record: 2-2Overall Record: 34-12
Oregon State fell 8-4 against Oregon on Tuesday
They then won 3-2 on Saturday to secure at least a series split
The third game of the series will be played Sunday night
USC is the only entrant into this week’s D1Baseball top 25. They replace Kansas, who was No. 25 last week.

consumers are stocking up on household items

You would think that all of this would scare high-earning parents into socking money away
especially since many forms of financial aid for college are for students who can demonstrate financial need
I have found that most of my peers (including high earners) with teenage kids aren't in a hurry to worry about college costs
so earning a lot and having more assets will not help my kids qualify for considerable (or any) financial aid for school
If our household income and assets are going to hold my kids back from receiving many types of financial aid for college
then it seems crazy to act like I am off the hook for all college costs
I'm not saying all high-earning parents should agree to pay for college in its entirety
but I am saying that most of us could save something for school during the 18-year period before our kids leave the nest
The average student loan debt most borrowers carry scares me
especially since many repayment plans for federal and private student loans last for up to 20 or 25 years
Setting them up to make student loan payments until they're well into their 40s
but I absolutely hate the idea of my kids beginning their adult lives with a considerable debt burden
this is a time when they might want to start a family or begin saving up to purchase a home of their own
I've heard the argument that some parents worked and paid for college as they went
in-state school was $11,610 for the 2024-2025 academic year
and it doesn't include the average annual cost for room and board ($13,310)
This means the average cost for a four-year degree from a public college is currently around six figures
While it's possible for students to work during school
most can't juggle earning that much and excelling in their studies
compared to $1,543 for those with a bachelor's degree and $1,840 for graduates with a master's degree
I plan to urge my kids to attend one of our excellent state schools for more affordable tuition and to help them find a degree program that applies to the actual workforce and provides a solid foundation for their financial future
This means no "feel-good" degree programs that don't apply to real-world jobs or industries
We have already started that conversation in our household
I cannot think of a better investment I could make than paying for my children's undergraduate education
they're going to need all the help they can get
Ohio — Belmont College and WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital have announced a partnership aimed at enhancing the college's radiology program
which promises to bring significant improvements for students and healthcare services in the region
"Having this partnership will allow our students to have the opportunities for more clinical sites
There's so much demand for radiologic technologists right now that we are having a hard time keeping up with the demand," said Carrie White
vice president of academic affairs at Belmont College
will undergo a transition this summer with an updated curriculum and a new interim director
who is also the Radiology Director at Wheeling Hospital
"My biggest priority for them [students] right now is to just make sure they can achieve their graduation goals for 2026
We want to make sure they will be able to sit for their registry and make sure they meet all their criteria," Bond said
Paul Gasparro emphasized the importance of the partnership
but when you come up with a partnership with a major hospital in your area you're ensuring the future success of the program
Students will be training in one of the major locations where they will be working
You can't beat that," Gasparro said
Local career opportunities were a focal point during the announcement
with the partners aiming to ensure that local students have job opportunities to meet healthcare needs in the area
radiology is one of the key components we provide at the hospital and making sure that we have a stable workforce
a development of individuals going into the field
is vitally important for us," said David Phillips
vice president and COO of WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital
"So whenever we can help out in the field
we're going to make sure we do that."
