COLLEGEVILLE — Not many defenses could have stopped Susquehanna's offensive buzz-saw Saturday
Susquehanna sophomore kicker Dominic Bourgeois hit a game-winning 37-yard field goal as time expired to propel the River Hawks to a 41-38 upset over the Johnnies in an NCAA Division III third-round playoff game in front of 4,605 fans at Clemens Stadium
"Every time they had to make a big play against our defense
They exploited our weaknesses on defense."
the River Hawks (11-1) started their final drive at their own 25 with 3:31 left
Susquehanna quarterback Josh Ehrlich hit tight end Michael Robbins for 16-yard passes on two third-down conversions to set up Bourgeois for the walk-off winner
They were Robbins' only two catches of the game
Susquehanna went 10-of-17 on third-down conversions
"Robbins helped us put Hobart (N.Y.) away last week
that was a pretty special moment for all of us
We always say the only people that can stop us on offense is ourselves."
The two biggest problems for the Johnnies' defense were Ehrlich and freshman running back Rahshan La Mons
Ehrlich went 25-of-37 passing for 274 yards with a touchdown while rushing 16 times for 57 yards and a TD
"La Mons and Ehrlich aren't like guys we see (in the MIAC)," Fasching said
"La Mons is a better running back than anybody I've seen
Said Sanders (who led SJU with 11 tackles): "La Mons is very talented
The game swung the River Hawks' way late in the first half after Bourgeois hit a 43-yard field to cut the Johnnies' lead to 17-10 with 2:34 left before halftime
"I thought that stop changed the game," Susquehanna head coach Tom Perkovich said
If we were down two scores at halftime — and then they get the ball coming out of the half — you're probably sitting there thinking that it's not our day."
The River Hawks saw the opening and took advantage
Ehrlich hit wide receiver Kyle Howes for a pretty 46-yard pass to the SJU 23
La Mons scored from 2 yards out to tie the game at 17 going into halftime
Fasching viewed those two drives as the key to the game
"We had a great play called on that fourth down
That was a big 14-point swing in their favor," Fasching said
We might have been up by three touchdowns in the third quarter if we had converted that fourth down."
John's looked like it had the momentum back after scoring on the first drive of the second half
Syverson hit All-American junior wide receiver Dylan Wheeler for a 10-yard touchdown less than three minutes in to make it 24-17
Wheeler made an improbable one-handed catch behind Susquehanna cornerback Dominic Winn's back to haul it in
that's when La Mons went to work on the Johnnies' defense
La Mons scored on a 17-yard touchdown with 8:24 left in the third to tie it at 24
The Johnnies thought La Mons was tackled down on the play
but replays showed his knee never hit the turf
La Mons bounced off an SJU defender who was on the ground
balanced himself with his right hand and ran into the end zone untouched
"I was just playing football out there," La Mons said
"The coaches have put me in positions to be successful as a young guy
The best decision of my life was picking Susquehanna in recruiting
I wouldn't want to do this anywhere else."
The Johnnies went three-and-out on their next drive and the River Hawks kept things rolling and set themselves up for a 4th-and-goal with 1:22 left in the third
Ehrlich hit Howes for a 1-yard touchdown to give Susquehanna a 31-24 lead
Susquehanna defensive lineman Jake Schultes stripped Syverson of the ball for a fumble recovery at the St
John's 40-yard line with 11:21 left in the game to set up another River Hawks' scoring opportunity
La Mons ran in a touchdown from 30 yards away to give his team a 38-24 edge with 9:15 remaining
"Rahshan is the best player I've ever played with
he's the best player in the country," Ehrlich said
as Syverson has shown throughout his career
there was plenty of time to make things interesting
He threw a 16-yard touchdown to tight end Joey Gendreau with 6:40 on the clock to cut the lead to 38-31
John's forced a Susquehanna three-and-out on the next drive and got the ball back at its own 45 following a poor punt by the River Hawks
Syverson connected with senior wide receiver Marselio Mendez for a 19-yard touchdown pass with 3:31 left to tie it at 38
And just like Syverson had plenty of time to tie the game
Ehrlich had just enough to set up Bourgeois for the game-winner
"All week we practiced that situation and running down the clock
I knew they were going to take a timeout before I kicked it
I just stuck with my routine," Bourgeois said
Credit to the offense for getting down the field
I just kicked it like any other field goal."
Bourgeois said it was the first game-winning field goal he's ever made
That fact got a surprised look from Perkovich
I was confident in him to get it there," Perkovich said of Bourgeois
"We beat a hell of a football team at the buzzer
We didn't want to give them the ball back after they tied it
"Their quarterback — I don't think you can ever stop him
Some of the catches they made on us in tight coverage was pure insanity
The River Hawks finished with 490 yards of total offense to St
Syverson finished 37-of-46 passing for 466 yards with five touchdowns
Schwellenbach had a game to remember with nine catches for 167 yards and two touchdowns
Mendez had eight catches for 113 yards and Gendreau had six catches for 98 yards
"This team has been resilient all season and we've never let momentum kill us," Perkovich said
"We bounce back and continue to make plays
This is a big moment for Susquehanna football
To win on the road against a team of this caliber finally shows people where we're at as a program."

The weekly Student Mass at the College of St. Benedict and St. John's University is going to be a little more adventurous this weekend
That's because they're setting up for an "ice mass" Sunday evening atop frozen Lake Sagatagan in Collegeville
Yep -- a Catholic mass for CSB and SJU students on the ice sheet
"It's about 50 feet off the beach from St John's," said Margaret Nuzzolese Conway
and so they're legitimately on the frozen lake."
Conway says the ice mass is a pretty elaborate affair
"We set up an altar and bring all the necessary supplies and vessels
We set up chairs students bring their blankets
We pre-record music so that the musicians fingers don't freeze."
This will be the third time the schools have held mass on the ice
when we were forced to think creatively and innovatively
And this was an exciting way to bring students into a creative and beautiful experience of mass in a place that they love and adore."
Conway says the "ice mass" is a good example of the schools' Benedictine values
"The Benedictines value care for creation and stewardship and liturgy
And so to do a liturgy like this in creation matters to students."
Conways says the schools hold masses outside throughout the year
One in the Clement football stadium and one on the grass outside the church
And CSB and SJU may be the only schools in the world who take mass out onto the ice
"We know of a school in Michigan that builds an ice chapel
but we don't know of any other schools who are doing a mass on a frozen lake
set-up tiki torches and break out the hand warmers and blankets
The mass begins at 9 Sunday evening just off shore on Lake Sagatagan at St
but you're welcomed to attend if you'd like to go
Oh, and air temperature at mass-time on Sunday evening is expected to be a balmy 30-degrees
Conway credits University Chaplain Father Nick Kleespie for making this event happen
"He's extremely dedicated to these students." She said
Ben's because he worked tirelessly to set something like this up
to give us the tools that we need to do something like this really well
and to do it in an exciting and rooted way
Conway -- who is a Minnesota transplant -- says things that happen on ice are very inherent to Minnesotans
"This event makes me always a little bit nervous
even though there's no reason to be nervous
this is as good as it gets," she said
But if there IS concern about ice safey
"Our safety and security team ensured that the lake was at least 20 inches thick in depth."

Although Ursinus students appreciate a good Wismer meal
the on-campus options for dinner can feel limited
Collegeville is not necessarily known for its restaurant culture
sometimes the best places are right around the corner
If you have eaten the same Wismer dinner for days on end and need a palate cleanser
El Gordo Bros is – literally – down the street
tucked inside the Quick Stop just a few blocks from campus
El Gordo Bros has an affordable menu with a variety of options
but at Gordo Bros I find myself torn between too many options
The prices are concentrated around the $10-$15 range
but if you order individual tacos they start at $3.50
The amount of food that comes with each entree is fully worth the price
Pictured on the bottom right is the enchilada platter for $15
My friend raved that this platter was well-balanced between the base of the rice and the enchilada’s variety of flavors
These churros have a cinnamon-sugar coated crunch and the perfect soft inside
you might end up devouring it all in one sitting
their tacos are $1.50 each – making this spot perfect for the broke college student
every entree is served with a bag of chips and a small salsa
the location inside of the QuickStop has its perks
you can easily browse the convenience store
The Arizona Teas are a great complement to the spicy food and are sold for 99¢
the workers are all incredibly kind and helpful
but I would recommend going in and interacting with the staff
and it helps that you can wander around the convenience store while the smell of your food fills the place
El Gordo Bros is the restaurant that will add flavor and vibrancy to your campus life
This restaurant is a unique small business with lots to offer us Collegevill-ians
Whether Gordo Bros becomes your Tuesday night ritual or your once-in-a-while treat
chances are you will be returning again and again

Chris Manning has always been up for a challenge
And knowing this was his class’s year to gather for Reunion Weekend at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University
the 1989 SJU graduate saw a way to truly put himself to the test
Colorado – decided to ride his bike to Collegeville
and I like doing things that are physically and mentally challenging,” said Manning
who has long owned his own business – Tessa Clogs – and also serves as controller of the Antlers at Vail Lodge
Manning departed his home on June 9 and arrived on the steps of the Abbey Church in Collegeville Monday afternoon (June 17) – well ahead of check-in for Reunion Weekend Thursday night (June 20)
His original route consisted of half-gravel and half-paved roads
“What ended up happening in the Sand Hills of Nebraska was that I got so beat up and spanked that I was literally crying on the side of the road sitting behind a storage bin in the middle of ranch country,” he said
he was accompanied by hometown friends Ryan and Michelle Wolffe
who would drive ahead of him and set up their pop-up camper – providing him shelter for the night
