(KKTV) - An apartment complex was evacuated late Sunday morning
according to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD)
The incident occurred in the 2000 block of South Circle at the Alta Apartment complex
a building that used to be the Hotel Elegante
Police said a man was found dead inside one of the rooms with a grenade in his hand
but the CSPD Regional Explosive Unit was called as a precaution
Police reportedly found two inert grenades in the room and explained to 11 News that inert grenades are shells with no explosives inside
it would be “impossible” for them to go off
Police believe that the man took his own life

trading magic wands for trash bags as they clean up their community
It's about picking up pieces of his life and giving back to the community that helped him
a time when he was fighting to get back on his feet
He had been living in his truck and turned to Westside Cares for help
'What are the chances of helping me get off the street?' And they said it starts right here
So that was the beginning of the beginning of the process
I had to show up for my life," MacNufo said
He quickly found purpose and a family through the OCC Trash Fairies — a group that started in 2016 after a rainstorm washed trash through Manitou
all the trash from upstream came down," Tiffany Scott said
Founders Luke and Tiffany Scott promised to do something about it and have been building community ever since
reminding others that keeping the city clean is a shared responsibility
"Let's treat each other as equals and get together for things like this and have a good time while we're out here," Luke Scott said
from first-timers to regulars like MacNufo
People would pay good money to feel what I'm feeling
and it only cost me to show up for my own life and for my community," MacNufo said
Others say the experience opens their eyes to bigger issues and why small actions matter
it's a little sad seeing everything here," Madison Kitchen said
"You kind of get a picture of how these homeless people have to live
It's good for anyone to come out here and see this and then try to become part of the solution," Daniel Kurschner said
The OCC Trash Fairies aim to do cleanups at least once a month
they met at Vermijo Park to clean up the section they adopted from 25th to Ridge
which they say sees a lot of different traffic
the team picked up almost 2 tons of trash in one morning
now he's the one showing up and showing others what's possible

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KOAA) — According to the US Department of Agriculture, 30-40% of the nation's food supply goes to waste. In southern Colorado
Bella's Bagels is trying to reduce that number
there's something in the air," said Bella's Co-Owner Jason Stele
Stele said Bella's started by donating its day-old bagels to local farms
and now those bagels go to people at a reduced price
"It hurts my soul to ever have to throw out stuff," Stele said
"We can still sell a dozen bagels at a fraction of the cost."
Stele said bagels that are not sold the day of get bagged to keep them fresh
and through a Colorado-based app called Goodie Bag
anyone can pick up the older bagels on a first-come
Goodie Bag's Co-Founder Eddy Connors said the idea came from him and his former CU Boulder roommate
He said they both realized how prevalent food waste is in the United States and wanted to be part of the change
"It's individuals like you and I that are responsible for the most amount of food waste in America," Connors said
Both Stele and Connors said when it comes to reducing your own food waste
be intentional about what you buy and what you sell
"The chefs themselves will know best how they can creatively put to work their leftovers," Connors said
pay close attention to how many items you expect to sell in a day

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - A new study by Apartment Insights shows that the price of apartments in Colorado Springs is trending down for the first time in a decade
"It's a really good time for renters," say Doug Carter
Carter tells KRDO13 Investigates an influx of new apartments has led to lower prices
"Primarily because of all the construction we see everywhere
There will still be a lot of apartments being finished this year
which is a good sign for renters," Carter said
Carter says the supply is finally catching up to the demand
This graph (seen above) shows that rent prices in Colorado Springs have dropped from their peak of around $1,500 in the middle of 2022
about $57 cheaper than this same time last year
and why Carter expects the rest of the year to be good for renters
is a 13.5% vacancy rate for all rentable apartments
Carter says apartment units are flying off the shelves
"There were more apartments rented last quarter than we've ever seen," he says
While Carter expects the rest of the year to be a boon for renters
the more distant future is still a bit uncertain
with all the construction still being completed
renters are getting some relief," Carter said

The Army said their cases will be handled internally and stressed they were “innocent until proven guilty.”
citizens who face consequences as a result of the early-morning raid Sunday that increasingly looks like a broad enforcement of civil immigration laws rather than a police effort to get drugs off the street or arrest dealers
More than 100 people were detained in the raid at an events facility in southeast Colorado Springs
But federal officials acknowledged that almost all were placed in immigration detention for possible deportation in the future
Federal officials took to multiple social media accounts Sunday and Monday
boasting that more than 100 people had been turned over to immigration officials and were inside a party at the facility using drugs and committing sex acts
They furnished no proof of any of those allegations on Monday
But the seemingly small haul didn’t deter some of the nation’s highest-ranking law enforcement officials from going online to tout the effort.
As with a previous DEA raid in January in Commerce City that didn’t result in any criminal charges
DEA Special Agent in Charge Jonathan Pullen said people were “dumping the drugs” when they got inside so it would have been hard to find criminal blame
Videos and statements posted on various X accounts showed dozens of men and women spilling out of an abandoned building at 4 a.m
Some immediately got down on their knees and put their hands behind their heads.
Officials say more than 300 law enforcement officers
Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Drug Enforcement Administration
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said on X that a number of those inside the club were gang member “terrorists” and noted that cocaine
methamphetamine and pink cocaine were seized
no federal or local criminal charges have been filed against anyone
Attorney’s Office declined to comment on the raid
DEA Special Agent in Charge Jonathan Pullen told reporters early Sunday morning that Colorado Springs was safer as a result of his agents’ work
we had active duty service officers running security at the club,” he said at sunrise
“We had more than 100 illegal aliens at the club and they were taken into custody by ICE.”
Pullen, who has previously acknowledged that sending people through immigration proceedings is easier than proving criminal cases in court
said there were “more than a dozen” active-duty service members in the club during the raid -- either as “patrons” of the club or working as armed security
“Only those here illegally or those with warrants were taken into custody,” a DEA statement said later
“Most partygoers were eventually released.”
Army Criminal Investigations officials were on the scene and Emily Peacock
a spokeswoman for Fort Carson Garrison Public Affairs
acknowledged “there were some Fort Carson service members present at the location during the operation.”
“Each person involved in this incident is presumed innocent until proven guilty,” she said in an emailed statement
“We will look at everyone’s situation on a case-by-case basis
Illegal activities of any kind do not represent our military values.”
The building targeted in Colorado Springs is in a strip mall – but isn’t far from a neighborhood.
Erica DeBoer is unhoused and was nearby when she woke up around 4 a.m
to the sound of what she thought was gunfire
seemed like officers were using to black out security cameras
She said it wasn’t the first time people had gathered in the building to party near where she is sleeping.
“Every weekend you’d hear the music,” she said
noting she sometimes heard arguments or fights breaking out late at night in the parking lot.
She was ushered across the street by local police at around 4 a.m
and was able to come back and retrieve her belongings at around 10 a.m
This isn’t the first time a makeshift party was raided by the DEA that resulted in far more deportation cases than criminal charges
In January, the DEA shut down a club on north Federal Boulevard in Adams County, which they said was tied to drug trafficking and narco distribution operations. They also said it was heavily attended by Venezuelan gang members. They never ended up filing any criminal charges on that case
and immigration lawyers have said a number of those detained by ICE and billed as gang members aren’t actually gang members at all
One Venezuelan man who was picked up in that Adams County raid has since become part of a lawsuit seeking to prevent his removal from Colorado to a prison in El Salvador.
A federal judge in Denver has blocked the Trump administration from using the Alien Enemies Act as pretext to remove people from the U.S
That case is on appeal now to the 10th U.S

Authorities across 10 agencies also seize guns and drugs and claim people they arrested are undocumented
More than 300 law enforcement officers from at least 10 federal agencies raided an illegal after-hours nightclub in Colorado Springs early on Sunday
arresting more than 100 people authorities said were undocumented immigrants and seizing guns
More than a dozen active-duty military members were detained as well
The federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) posted a video on X of the post-raid scene, with dozens of partygoers holding their hands up. Another video showed dozens of people fleeing the building through its entrance after federal agents smashed a window
The DEA Rocky Mountain division said agents with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), homeland security, the US army’s criminal investigation division and the Colorado Springs police had joined the raid
“200+ inside an underground nightclub in CO Springs had their illegal party upended this am,” the DEA posted. In a separate post, the agency’s Rocky Mountain division added: “Nothing good ever happens after 3 a.m.”
Jonathan Pullen, the DEA agent in charge, told reporters at a news conference that some detained service members were patrons while others were working as armed security guards at the underground nightclub
the DEA agent in charge of an early morning raid on a nightclub in Colorado Springs
briefed the media on Sunday.Pullen said the nightclub had been under investigation for several months for alleged activities including drug trafficking
most of the drugs hit the floor,” Pullen said
adding: “Colorado Springs is waking up to a safer community today.”
Pam Bondi, the US attorney general, heralded the raid, saying on X: “As we approach his 100 days in office @POTUS Trump’s directive to make America safe again is achieving results!”
Colorado Springs is home to a number of military installations
including the Cheyenne Mountain space force station and the headquarters of US space operations command
Sunday’s raid is the latest DEA crackdown in the area this year
a raid on a “makeshift nightclub” in Adams county
led to the arrests of 41 people living in the country illegally and another eight who had been in the club
David Olesky, a DEA special agent in charge, said at the time that an uptick in enforcement was due to a “renewed sense of purpose” under the Trump administration
After Sunday’s raid, the owner of the building where the party had been held told Denver7 he had no idea an underground nightclub was operating on his property
“I’ve never even seen a lot of trash in the parking lot to even suspect that anything like an after-hours nightclub is going on
Moon said the space is usually rented out for birthdays
They’re not allowed to do any illegal activity,” he told the outlet
In a statement, Colorado Springs’ mayor, Yemi Mobolade, said the investigation and the execution of these warrants were “the result of clear evidence of serious criminal conduct” and that residents deserved “to live in a city where the rule of law is upheld and where illegal behavior is met with firm and decisive action”
— Some active duty military service members were among those detained during a large-scale federal law enforcement operation Sunday morning at an underground nightclub in Colorado Springs
More than 300 law enforcement officers from at least 10 federal agencies

was part of an investigation into drug trafficking
prostitution and crimes of violence at the illegal club
More than a dozen active duty service members were at the underground nightclub
The Army confirms that service members from its base in Fort Carson were present
they will not say how many service members were involved
The United States Army Criminal Investigation Division released the following statement:
“Army CID is aware of this matter and is currently conducting a joint investigation with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)
we are unable to provide additional information at this time,” the statement read
"Colorado Springs is waking up to a safer city this Sunday morning," he said
Officers were seen escorting people from the club in handcuffs
according to the Denver7 Investigates crew at the scene
Law enforcement had cordoned off several square blocks around the club in central Colorado Springs to conduct the operation
The DEA's Rocky Mountain Division said in a social media post that more than 100 people in custody were in the U.S
The agency said it seized drugs and weapons during the operation
Pullen said that many of those detained will face federal immigration charges
and some were arrested on outstanding warrants
he said it is unlikely they will be able to file drug charges because of the difficulty in proving possession during the bust
The owner of the building, Mike Moon, expressed shock after learning that his property was allegedly being used as an illegal nightclub
“I've never even seen a lot of trash in the parking lot to even suspect that anything like an after-hours nightclub is going on
Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade thanked law enforcement and said criminal activity will not be tolerated
“Let me be clear: criminal activity of any kind
This investigation and the execution of these warrants are the result of clear evidence of serious criminal conduct
Our residents deserve to live in a city where the rule of law is upheld and where illegal behavior is met with firm and decisive action
We will continue working together to ensure the safety and well-being of our entire community.”

Colorado Springs police said they were "assisting federal partners on an operation serving a warrant involving criminal activity in Colorado Springs" and that the DEA was the lead agency
coordinated federal operation of its kind in El Paso County this year
comes amid a Colorado crackdown by the DEA
As the agency conducted four Denver-area operations on Jan. 29
special agent in charge David Olesky said an uptick in enforcement is due to a “renewed sense of purpose” at the agency under the Trump administration
“We’re getting absolutely all the resources that we need not only at the federal level but at the local level as well,” he said at the time
that is just one of the tools in the toolbox that we’re going to be able to use to remove those violent criminals and drug traffickers from the communities.”
He said he believes criminals have taken advantage of vulnerabilities and weaknesses in the state
and that the border policies of recent years have been too open and allowed for too many people to cross the U.S
Diversity is critical to the success of America
While the agency touted more than 90 arrests over 12 Colorado operations in less than three weeks between late January and early February
the DEA admitted to Denver7 Investigates that it expected more
5 targeted more than 100 members of TdA but netted just one confirmed TdA arrest
said he believes the targeted criminals were feeling the pressure
“What we found was that they weren't where we expected them to be," he said
“It's likely that the pressure that we've put on these folks over the last several weeks has encouraged them to hide more.”
like Sunday's operation in Colorado Springs
even those who have been arrested haven’t been punished – particularly in drug cases
An event billed as a “TdA invite-only party” in Adams County netted 49 arrests, but none of the suspects ended up facing charges. Pullen said drugs and guns "hit the floor" when officers arrived, making it difficult to pinpoint what individuals they may have belonged to.

More than 100 immigrants suspected of being in the United States illegally were taken into custody early Sunday following a federal raid at an illegal after-hours nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado, authorities said.
Video posted online by the Drug Enforcement Administration showed agents announcing their presence outside the building and ordering patrons to leave with their hands up. Other videos showed dozens of people fleeing the building through its entrance after federal agents smashed a window. Later, dozens of suspects were shown in handcuffs standing on a sidewalk waiting to be transported.
On Sunday in Colorado, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement took the club-going immigrants into custody, said Jonathan Pullen, special agent in charge of the DEA’s Rocky Mountain Division.
“Colorado Springs is waking up to a safer community today,” he said. The city, Colorado’s second largest, lies about 70 miles (113 kilometers) south of Denver.
More than 300 law enforcement officers and officials from multiple agencies responded to the nightclub, which had been under investigation for several months for alleged activities including drug trafficking, prostitution and “crimes of violence,” Pullen said at a news conference. Cocaine was among the drugs found, he said.
“When the cops showed up at the door, most of the drugs hit the floor,” Pullen said.
An undisclosed number of guns were seized, he said.
Trump posted a link to the DEA video of the raid on his social media site, Truth Social. “A big Raid last night on some of the worst people illegally in our Country — Drug Dealers, Murderers, and other Violent Criminals, of all shapes and sizes,” the president wrote.
Pullen estimated more than 200 people were inside the nightclub. Among them were more than a dozen active-duty military members who either were patrons or working as armed security. He said the DEA will consult with the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division to determine the next steps involving the service members. In addition, some patrons were arrested on undisclosed outstanding warrants, Pullen said.
Pullen did not specify the countries where the detained immigrants were from.
This story was first published on April 27, 2025. It was updated on April 28, 2025 to correct comments by Jonathan Pullen. He said the DEA will work with the Army in connection with the service members who were present either as patrons at the club or employed as security. He did not say active-duty military members were among those detained.

(KOAA) — The Trump administration has imposed tariffs on U.S
and coffee businesses in Colorado Springs are expecting an impact
A recent USDA report shows Brazil is the country's top supplier
says his store plans to raise the prices of its coffee beans
"We are going up about 11%," said Anderson

It has to be above 4,000 or 5,000 feet," said Anderson

owner of Carnelian Coffee in Old Colorado City
says he has raised the prices of his coffee drinks
"We tried to absorb as much costs as we can because we don't want to outprice people for drinking coffee," said Klauss
Klauss says he's going to buy as much coffee as possible to protect inventory and product
Both owners say they are figuring out ways to minimize the impact on their customers
the half-mile of 8th Street between Cimarron Street and Motor City Drive becomes one of the city's busiest
with more than 30,000 vehicles traveling on it
Get ready for more congestion during the next year
City officials have announced a $12 million
multifaceted project that will make a number of traffic and safety improvements
One objective is to eliminate a bottleneck northbound at the Fountain Creek bridge
where the right lane becomes a turn lane onto the US 24 Frontage Road to Cimarron and Interstate 25; the project will remove a pedestrian bridge in that area and add a new right turn lane to keep two lanes flowing northbound
"And we're going to do some preventive (bridge) maintenance in order to extend the service life," said Ryan Phipps
"That bridge structure itself is about 74 years old
and the work that we're going to do will allow this bridge to perform for another 30-plus years."
The added lane will include attached sidewalk/trail for improved access to US 24 and the Midland Trail; that project begins later this month and should finish this summer
Another key phase — starting this fall and continuing through winter — will replace a 24-inch water main between Motor City and Vermijo Avenue
"It's between US 24 and Bear Creek is about 60 years old," Phipps said."
curbs and gutters where they currently don't exist on the west side of 8th Street
and has made for messy travel in wet weather for people walking
The project includes improving drainage into Fountain and Bear creeks by installing storm sewers on the Moreno Avenue and Lower Gold Camp Road hills above the street; flash flooding occasionally stalls traffic and deposits large amounts of rock and sediment at those intersections
Traffic signals will be replaced and upgraded at those locations
will happen late next spring or early next summer
For the many business owners along the corridor
the project is no surprise; they've been aware of the possibility since a city study in 2023 that KRDO 13 reported on
is how construction will affect those businesses and their customers
"We definitely think it's going to affect us because it's going to take people more time to get here more time to get here
maybe it's going to change their mind about coming here," said Leo Martinez
but there's construction all over this city and we've had to battle it," she said
Phipps said that access to businesses will remain open
"We've made every effort to reach out," he said
"I know that someone always falls through the cracks
but we've made the effort to reach out to property owners
A lot of times when you're talking about the folks that might slip through the cracks
An employee at the Sugarplum Cake Shoppe & Bakery said that she wasn't aware of the project but is interested in seeing how it turns out
"I actually have a map that goes back to 1907
and it identifies the first time that 8th Street actually shows up and is identified as a wagon trail," Phipps revealed
city officials will host an open house at the nearby Norris Penrose Event Center
to answer questions and provide more information
To learn more, visit: https://coloradosprings.gov/8thStreet
An unknown variable is whether increased traffic congestion on 8th Street could spread to nearby Cimarron Street (US 24) and I-25
Phipps released the following statement Friday:
“We have designed the improvements to limit the impact to Highway 24
we do expect occasional and limited impacts at that intersection
which we plan to communicate ahead of time.“
traffic backups will be inevitable during the summer travel season
and in an area where a busy city street is close to two highways: More reason for drivers to consider alternate routes and have patience during the project period

The Drug Enforcement Administration says a raid carried out with other law enforcement agencies in Colorado Springs on Sunday led to the capture of more than 100 immigrants who are in the U.S
The DEA's Rocky Mountain Division said in a post on X that 114 immigrants were arrested and placed "on buses for processing and likely eventual deportation."
The DEA said in a separate post earlier in the day that the "multi-agency enforcement operation" at an "underground nightclub" early on Sunday had also resulted in the seizure of drugs and weapons
The raid appears to be one of the largest single-day arrests of people without legal status since Trump was inaugurated in January
with a promise to conduct mass deportations
Video posted online by the DEA showed an agent bashing through a glass window on the front of the building before people began streaming out of the front door
where law enforcement authorities were waiting
shouted at the patrons to stop and get down
Many put their hands up or got on the ground
The agency said it gave multiple warnings urging people inside to come out before the raid
Attorney General Pam Bondi said that the club was "frequented by Tda and MS-13 terrorists." That is likely a reference to Tren de Aragua, the Venezuelan gang that has been a target of Trump administration deportations in the U.S
NPR could not immediately verify the legal status of those arrested
and whether there's any evidence of gang membership
Bondi said two people were also arrested on existing warrants
In a video posted online by Denver7 News
DEA Special Agent in Charge Jonathan Pullen said "what was happening inside was significant drug trafficking
crimes of violence — we seized a number of guns in there."
Pullen added that there were over a dozen active duty service members in the club either as patrons or working as armed security guards

recreational marijuana sales will begin in Colorado Springs
City records Friday showed 22 storefronts had secured active recreational licenses for opening day
a Pueblo-based company with one of its seven shops located in the Springs
“It was kind of a make or break for us,” he said of the Springs location
Voters in Colorado’s second-largest city passed a measure allowing retail pot last November
more than a decade after the state became the first in the nation to legalize the drug
City leaders had long fought against recreational sales
They argued it would lead to higher crime rates
increase cannabis use by minors and harm the city’s reputation in the hunt for greater military investment.
City council members attempted to put the issue before voters again this April. That effort was blocked in court.
The new rules allow only existing medical marijuana dispensaries in the city to apply for recreational licenses
Many of the 166 active medical license holders have complained of slowing medical sales in the city for years
Julian said the Springs NuVue location would likely have closed without a recreational license.
“I was actually camping out in front of the city clerk’s office the morning that applications were allowed to be submitted,” he said.
Pure Cannabis has been operating medical dispensaries in the city since 2009
General Manager Karlie Vanarnam said she has hired close to 40 new employees in the last two weeks to prepare for the shift to recreational sales at her three stores.
“It’s a little overwhelming,” Vanarnam said
hard fight and we’re just excited it’s finally coming to fruition.”
Stores may not stock or store recreational marijuana until April 15th as well
While some shops are planning early morning shipments so they can sell as soon as possible on Tuesday
Vanarnam said her team is taking the day to sort through their new inventory before starting their retail sales on Wednesday
“We’ve got a lot of hands to help us receive that inventory
“I don’t want retail customers coming in on Tuesday to an absolute zoo
she’ll expand her stores’ opening hours to 9 a.m
