“I went into Petco to grab some stuff on sale and the employee told me they are closing if I needed more stuff for my setup I should come in soon as they are closing January 11 along with DSW.”
DSW opened there back in 2012. A bird got stuck inside the following year…
Petco opened here back in 2013. In 2015 3 Month Old Kittens were stolen there
A second sobering and stabilization center is scheduled to be completed in 2026
Those who live in the area are questioning why they weren’t included in the decision-making process
was taking out her trash when The Wash asked her how she felt about the stabilization and sobering center opening next door to her
She said she had no idea such a project was happening
As the District grapples with an escalating substance abuse crisis
city officials are preparing to open a second stabilization and sobering center in Columbia Heights
While the facility aims to reduce the amount of substance abuse in the District
I think it should be somewhere else in a bigger building
This is just not a good neighborhood for it,” Ortiz said
In February, Mayor Muriel E. Bowser opened the first of two sobering centers at 35 K St. in Northeast D.C.
aimed to redirect substance users from jail or emergency room check-ins
In less than a year over 5,000 people have been admitted to the facility
“There is a big issue with opioids and opioid fatalities in D.C
But alcoholism is the biggest substance use disorder social workers are seeing at Columbia Heights Civic Plaza,” Ward 1 Councilmember Brianne Nadeau said in an email response to The Wash
The $9.5 million project will replace the historic Old Engine Company No
The 24/7 center will offer a range of medical services at no cost
comprehensive bio-psycho-social assessment
a kitchen and nurse station and observation rooms
“While patients will come from anywhere in the city
the location in Columbia Heights will help serve some of the people struggling with substance use disorders at Civic Plaza
Many of them have expressed interest in getting sober and this is now an extremely low barrier for getting the help they need and in many cases desire,” Nadeau said
City officials are eager to move the project forward quickly, but residents still need time to digest what’s being added to their neighborhood.
The project has moved fast with little to no communication with residents on Park Road
Two residents down the street said the most information they’ve received in the past four months was a flyer from the ANC
Other residents on the opposite side of the road said they hadn’t received a flyer or any information about the project
“Residents just wanted to feel heard at the planning stage and oftentimes in the district
a lot of discussions happen after the fact,” said Anthony Thomas-Davis
Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner representing part of the Columbia Heights neighborhood
Ortiz said the lack of communication makes her feel like residents’ voices don’t matter to officials
Two houses down from the facility Gabrielle Rodriguez said he wasn’t notified about the stabilization center until his neighbor told him about the project
Rodriguez said many residents — like his neighbor who has lived in Columbia Heights for 30 years
strongly oppose the sober center on a residential street
“I think people do understand that it’s a great idea but they don’t think it’s the best place for it … I think people don’t feel like the program will have enough funds to sustain it,” Rodriguez said
adding that residents are concerned people will loiter around their homes
Other longtime residents have gone to Reddit to discuss their concerns
“I’m just doubtful the city will prioritize something like this.” Another resident commented
“I’m not hopeful about the city’s likelihood to execute something like this in a thoughtful way that integrates the concerns of everyone that lives in the neighborhood
while also assessing the needs of the people for whom this is intended
Especially given the lack of transparency so far.”
said while he would like to support the development
he’s conflicted with how successful it will be
His concerns are that the facility is too small to tackle the large numbers of those experiencing substance abuse and that the center should be located in neighborhoods which have experienced higher drug fatalities from the opioid crisis
“I am proud of the fact that we have a resource like this available
based on what I’ve heard from the community
based on what I know has not happened up to this point
I oppose it being on a residential street like Park Road,” he said
a resident who has lived in the neighborhood since the ‘90s
said he’s witnessed substance abuse as an issue on their streets making the stabilization center a necessary addition for Columbia Heights
he and his wife Tony are nervous about the unknowns of what the facility will bring
The D.C. Stabilization and Sobering Center, operated by Community Bridges in partnership with the DC Department of Behavioral Health
serves adults 18 and over experiencing substance use disorder at no charge
The Wash reached out the DBH to address neighborhood concerns regarding location and lack of communication
The agency said it had held two meetings open to the public to inform residents about the center
”We’ve shown our commitment to keeping the community informed and engaged,” said Phyllis Jones
“We started our engagement at the early days of the project and were going to continue to do that because we think it’s very important that the community has information they need to raise any concerns that they have.”
Individuals in need of the center’s care can visit or be transported to the center if they require stabilization support
Individuals can be referred by the Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department
When a patient checks in they will receive a medical screening and clearance before trained medical staff can address any immediate care
From there the individual will be connected with a peer counselor or recovery coach
administer crisis stabilization and support services
and coordinate continued care and support upon discharge
The stabilization center can support up to 22 individuals at one time
The center features 16 recliners for people staying up to 23 hours
and 6 patient beds for individuals staying up to 72 hours with acute substance use disorder needs that need to be observed and monitored
The Park Road stabilization center has completed the first part of the reconstruction
but there are three other phases it must undergo before a Spring 2026 completion
This includes designing structural preservation plans
and developing concept design to minimize impact on residential areas
which is funded through the $9.5 million from city funding
While the development is slated for a Spring 2026 completion
the site itself will not open for operation until funds are properly allocated

Every concern the community has raised at either of these meetings (the first one was labeled as having a zoom option but no one on zoom could hear anything given DBH didn’t properly set up the necessary technology
by the way – you should ask them about that as most of the people couldn’t participate and couldn’t hear) has been dismissed by Jones or CM Nadeau
Jones claiming they’ve engaged the community from the very beginning as laughable as Nadeau herself
at the meeting on Nov 25 (there should be a recording you can review)
admitted that the community WASN’T engaged prior to the site selection and that she and the mayor made the decision unilaterally and it wasn’t until AFTER the site selection had been made was the community informed

I’m wondering if anyone else who lives in Columbia Heights and has AT&T as their cell phone/wireless carrier is having signal issues
I live at 14th and Girard and I haven’t had cell phone signal in several days (I get a perpetual SOS icon)
This persists as I walk up to Irving and 14th
I wonder if it’s related to the new buildings going up between Girard and Harvard
Curious if others are experiencing the same
Update: I wasn’t able to log into my AT&T account on account of not having cell service to do two-factor authentication
but I was just able to log in at work and there is indeed a reported service outage til Friday

chef James Wozniuk’s Eater 38 spot and its sibling bar Thirsty Crow will shutter this month
Columbia Heights’ five-year-old destination Makan and its downstairs bar, Thirsty Crow, announced on Instagram this weekend that the dual dining destinations will close for good on Sunday
Chef and owner James Wozniuk cited a slowdown in customers
as well as an uptick in crime in the neighborhood
Despite the bad timing of opening his restaurant during the dawn of COVID-19 in March 2020
who formerly worked at Spoken English and Maketto
has garnered praise and a loyal following for his deeply flavorful dishes and bright ingredients at the Malaysian-influenced neighborhood restaurant and its subterranean sports bar (3400 11th Street NW) known for its royal blue pool tables
The last day of service coincides with the Super Bowl
The chef and owner told Eater that weathering the pandemic was “a wild ride” for the new restaurant but things were looking up in 2022 and 2023
when the Eater 38-designated restaurant was awarded Bib Gourmand status in the Michelin Guide
Wozniuk says it’s “that kind of perfect storm” of the building’s high rent
and a slowing trickle of customers that made him decide to close his beloved bar and restaurant
He also cited crime in the Columbia Heights neighborhood
which he says has gotten worse in the past few years
“Columbia Heights is really just kind of going through it
the amount of crime that we’ve dealt with in the last three years..
“We get a lot of emails saying the two big complaints are just
there’s no parking and guests just don’t feel safe coming to that area.”
Wozniuk referenced how Makan has been “burglarized four times” and recently had a stray bullet come through a window
While he loves the area and neighbors like El Chucho and Queen’s English
he’s seen the Northwest strip “going downhill” as spots like local hangout Room 11 and award-winning Bad Saints shuttered during the pandemic
He gave his team at Makan and Thirsty Crow their notice a few weeks ago and is now helping staff to find jobs throughout the city
while he tries to find someone to take over the lease on the 11th Street and Park Road corner
He’s already had an influx of familiar faces coming in for Makan’s last week
“It really just shows the impact that we did have and how much people cared about us..
it really makes us feel like we were appreciated.”

The developer of a 373-unit apartment building next to the Columbia Heights Metro station has yet to pay back its loan after it matured in July
At least two securitized pieces of Donatelli Development’s $146M loan on the Highland Park building at 1400 Irving St. NW were transferred to special servicing in October, according to December servicer commentary in the Morningstar Credit database
Donatelli didn't respond to a request for comment. The special servicer, CBRE Loan Services
The property was refinanced for $146M in July 2022
and two pieces of that loan totaling $74M and $30M were sold into commercial real estate collateralized loan obligation pools
The property was 85% occupied when the loan was issued
but it appears the landlord hasn't hit targets for rent increases
The issuer projected the net operating income would reach roughly $9M at stabilization
but the property's latest reported NOI was $7.2M
“It looks like it’s not hitting its plan, and trying to refi in this environment but with this amount of debt was always going to be a challenge,” Morningstar Credit Head of CRE Analytics David Putro told Bisnow
The presale report said Donatelli planned to “increase the multifamily rents
and back-fill the dark Wawa commercial space.”
Highland Park was appraised at $204M when the loan was originated
The property doesn't appear to have any more recent appraisals
Donatelli completed the project's two phases in 2009 and 2013. The development cost was $70M
according to D.C.'s Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development
which said 20% of the apartments were reserved as affordable

Do you have any updates on Lou’s in Columbia Heights?
It was completely closed on Saturday afternoon
right before the NFL games were about to start
I’ve heard from other friends they’ve been closed a lot recently (or perhaps closed permanently?)
It’s one of my favorite bars in the area so hoping it’s only temporary.”
Another reader writes: “Is it permanently closed
I walk past it many nights coming from the Metro and it seems to be done for
I first noticed when it was closed on MNF nights and how its google map location says “temporarily closed” seem as though a sports bar would wait until after the Super Bowl for simple renovations.”

Columbia Heights is likely one of the most famous streets in Brooklyn Heights — once home to Walt Whitman and Norman Mailer
The Civil War–era rowhouses on the avenue look out over the promenade
with views extending from the East River all the way to the Statue of Liberty
and perfectly lit art visible from the street
The massive four-story brownstone is the sickly shade of green mold
except in the places the façade has chipped off completely
its Italianate finishes scuffed and rotting
trash littered the steps leading down to the garden-level entrance
and a red Nike shoebox sat abandoned in a stone planter
I could see piles of what looked like old furniture and debris
The neighborhood association has long been frustrated with the situation
194 is the ultimate street-level mystery: In the most real-estate-obsessed city in the world
it seems incomprehensible that anyone would let a house like this rot
Let’s start with the owner of 194 Columbia Heights: a man named Austin Moore
a psychiatrist who for years practiced out of an office on Henry Street and bought the historic house
from the previous owner in 1969 for $140,000
may still live at the address where he once kept an office
at least according to tax records.) His trouble with the house started early: By 1986
Moore was already facing the threat of foreclosure by the city due to unpaid property taxes but was able to cover enough of the balance to stave it off
Documents about the foreclosure proceeding note that the building had been vacant since 1983
though neighborhood watchers like Porter say it was closed up long before that
records from the Department of Housing Preservation and the Department of Buildings show 32 complaints and 17 violations
from open and broken windows to a failure to comply with changes to its certificate of occupancy
Moore’s unpaid property taxes continued to pile up
He owed another $40,000 in 2009 and now owes nearly $250,000
Which is part of the intrigue: Why keep up such a money pit when selling would be so lucrative
When I asked around the neighborhood (and the mailman
they all had heard the same rumor: Moore was keeping the house in order to spite an ex-wife
A woman whose name was also listed on property records never responded to my inquiries
there are two main engines of redress for a house that’s fallen into disrepair: intervention from the various city agencies that have jurisdiction over housing and vocal
it’s both.) Both have so far failed in the case of 194
“I think the whole thing’s about to come down,” another property manager of a nearby apartment building told me
who claims that a rat infestation from the house has impacted his buildings and tenants
But the Department of Buildings seems to disagree: Though the agency can make an emergency declaration to demolish a building if it’s deemed a hazard
a spokesperson told me that the department sent inspectors to 194 in February and found the house properly sealed to the public
which at the very least means that doors and windows on the first level were properly locked
The house also wasn’t at any risk of collapse or fire
its very difficult for a city agency to step in physically,” Andrew Rudansky
the spokesman for the Department of Buildings
it could typically force a house like 194 into a tax lien sale
a spokesperson confirmed that Moore was on a payment plan
the house “may be subject to a lien sale in 2025.”
the Landmarks Preservation Commission could deem the property at risk of “demolition by neglect” — but it too has so far not chosen to act
A Landmarks spokesperson said that Moore has been issued summonses for failing to comply with landmark rules as recently as June
but has apparently made adequate fixes to the home’s roof and cornices that placated the department
which “continues to work closely with the owner to make additional necessary repairs
including an upcoming on-site visit,” per a statement
the property manager who said Moore once had a tenant
is the only person I spoke to who actually knows the man
“He calls me from time to time,” Younger told me
“to ask about vendors to do the things the city makes him do
to keep the city off his back.” Occasionally
As for why he thinks Moore has kept the house despite everything — the windfall that surely awaits if he does
and letting someone put some use to the space — Younger says he’s not sure
“He has only ever been cordial with me,” he said

Prosecutors are seeking to certify a 16-year-old accused of fatally shooting a man as an adult
A court filing from Tuesday shows Anoka County prosecutors requesting the court certify the juvenile as an adult offender for the crime of second-degree manslaughter
The filing is in connection with a shooting that killed 20-year-old Faisal Dabarani of Minneapolis in Columbia Heights on March 1
RELATED: 16-year-old in custody in connection to Columbia Heights homicide
According to a statement of probable cause
Dabarani and another man picked up the suspect and went to McDonald’s in Columbia Heights
they picked up another person from a different vehicle and drove to a nearby business
the car found a parking spot on the 4200 block of Central Avenue Northeast
according to the statement of probable cause
The suspect allegedly left with the firearm as the other occupants of the car brought Dabarani to the hospital
“Looks like DSW in Columbia Heights is officially closing on the 25th
Originally we were told the DSW would be closing the same day as the Petco

In order to preserve vending in Columbia Heights
vendors are going to have to move to new zones
The smell of fresh fruit among the crowded street of customers is hard to avoid
Street vending in Columbia Heights and Mount Pleasant has been the heart of its neighborhood for decades
But why is preserving its long history getting complicated
When you jump off the Columbia Heights Metro station you’re automatically thrown into a congested corner where vendors overcrowd the streets
customers don’t want to see it go away and vendors don’t want to lose their jobs
In an October Advisory Neighborhood Commission meeting, District Bridges
a nonprofit organization that invests and supports local businesses
informed the council of its status for a new vending zone site plan
The nonprofit received a grant from the Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection (DLCP) to develop a vending zone project to “create a safe
vibrant space for the area,” Carolina Buitrago
director of programming at District Bridges
Existing problems with the vending system include lack of communication and trust from vendors
has to develop and get approval for 54 vending sites around the Columbia Heights and Mount Pleasant neighborhoods
Establishing zoning is the first phase of the Street Vendor Advancement Amendment Act of 2023
which began this fiscal year and softened many restrictions around street vending
It’s a plan that sounds vaguely promising to some, but the vending map still requires approval from the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and the Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection; however
and the zoning manager isn’t clear on what’s next
ANC commissioner for 1A04 and committee chair for Small Business and Economic Development
said it’s important to continue vending in the neighborhood as it creates job opportunities and entrepreneur opportunities for small businesses
but the way vending zones currently operate isn’t sustainable long term
“There’s not enough space on the sidewalk where the street vendors operate
a family with little kids walking to get by,” Sherman said
“We need a structure to create specific designated sites where vendors can and cannot operate.”
almost all of the vendors operate on one block
who has lived in the Columbia Heights neighborhood since ‘86
but even he agrees there has to be more space for vending
“The vendor community has a responsibility to give people an opportunity to make a living [from street selling]
and the vendors have a responsibility to respect the community that they’re operating in,” Jordan said
The slow process of implementing zoning sites for vending is becoming an issue for all
vendors are uncertain of their potential relocation and neighboring residents are complaining the current space for vending is an eyesore
If the DLCP and DDOT can agree on the proposed vending map
only selected vendors who have been pre-approved by the District Bridges will be relocated to one of their top three zones
The next phase would ensure vendor licenses
permits and health certifications compliance
people could vend in Mount Pleasant Street Park
Street vending has a long history in the D.C
specifically in the Columbia Heights and Mount Pleasant areas
This neighborhood is historically known for vending by Black
introduced by Ward 1 Councilmember Brianne K
an individual and a vending zone manager license
Council unanimously voted to pass the Street Vendor Advancement Amendment Act
Sherman said the future of vending doesn’t seem to be going anywhere
the vending plan will operate a pilot project to determine if the site plan has potential success
and we’re going to test it out if something is not working we’re going to make readjustments … if we need to move the sites we can discuss it with DLCP and make the changes on the permit and the site plan,” Buitrago said
There is no required date of when the phase must begin at this time
Has to go away from Columbua Heughts where stolen goods are sold
I can’t get thru the street walking and feel unsafe
Try to avoid going to the area as much as possible
“Street vending in Columbia Heights and Mount Pleasant has been the heart of its neighborhood for decades.” This is simply false
I’ve been in this neighborhood for almost 15 years and we went from having one or two vendors in the entire neighborhood
to a complete free-for-all when council decriminalized street vending
This is about circumventing regulations for some at the expense of everyone
The quality of our streetscape has suffered – as a result
ultimately the neighborhood is rapidly losing it’s appeal as our councilmember sits on her hands and takes no concrete action to solve the problems created by the lawlessness that has been allowed to proliferate on 14th street

Two chilled bars come to a container ($10)

It’s the chocolate bar that “took over the world,” according to the New York Times
Next came the Dubai strawberry cup ($11.99)
which breaks the candy bar out of the mold and turns it into a parfait studded with fresh fruit
the pistachio-coated bits of phyllo give a light and crispy little pop to every chocolaty bite

The cousins' intention with the Golden Nuts (4801 Central Av. NE., Columbia Heights, thegoldennutsmn.com) was simply to provide a fun and tasty place to stock up on sweets, similar to businesses that their family runs back home, in Jerusalem.
“It’s an idea that’s not existed in Minnesota, so we thought of something new for the state, for the neighborhood, for the community,” Asmar said. “The location is the center for the Muslim communities; it’s max 30 minutes for everyone to come visit.”
And, Asmar added, everyone is welcome. “We have all types of guests,” he said.

WASHINGTON (7News) — 7News On Your Side is getting answers for seniors who have been stuck in their Columbia Heights apartment building for three weeks and counting
and the management company has been quiet until Monday
7News' Lianna Golden tracked them down in Bethesda
Maryland to hear how they are helping these residents
"Hi, how are you? My name is Lianna Golden. I’m a reporter with ABC7. I’ve been trying to reach out about one of your properties in DC. I was wondering if anyone’s gotten my calls or emails," Golden said at Quantum Real Estate Management's door at 5101 River Road Monday evening
This comes one week after Golden spoke with 91-year-old Harriet Lowery at Victory Heights apartment on Irving St
"I can’t walk up and down steps," Lowery said then
She's been cooped up in her one-bedroom unit since December 11
not only causing a mess in her unit and dozens of others but also blowing out the elevators
"I had to cancel my doctor's appointment
Golden reached out to Quantum Management via phone and email
She didn't hear back and reached out again days later
Monday evening was the first she'd heard from the company
The company's president and senior vice president invited Golden in to talk
They walked Golden through what was being done to help Lowery and her elderly neighbors
and then we want the apartment back like it used to be," Lowery said on December 23
7News will keep you posted on the repair timeline

A man was killed early Christmas Eve morning after a fire erupted inside a house in Northwest D.C.
according to the city’s fire department
Fire and EMS received reports of smoke and fire just before 1 a.m
Tuesday on Ogden Street in Columbia Heights
they found a man inside showing no signs of life
according to the department’s Chief Communications Officer Noah Gray
The fire started while the man was using his fireplace
which fire officials said appeared to be self installed
debris got onto the floor and ignited combustibles inside the house
we just want everybody to understand fire safety in the home,” Kauffman said
to make sure that they are taking care and servicing their fireplaces properly
so that they are clean and in proper working order.”
the fire stayed contained to the first floor of the house around the fireplace
but was significant enough to kill the man
No one else was inside when the fire erupted
members of the department went door to door in the neighborhood as part of its “return to scene initiative.” Members of the fire prevention division performed home safety inspections in the area and made sure homes have working smoke alarms
it’s Christmas Eve morning and we lost a life in a fire
and we don’t want to see that happen anymore,” Gray said
