Kate Schweitzer typically gets better as she gets deeper into a game
And as her first season as Commack’s starting pitcher has progressed
The junior struck out 11 and allowed no earned runs in a one-hitter to lead visiting Commack to a 10-2 win over Northport in Suffolk League III softball Tuesday
Schweitzer had three strikeouts entering the fifth inning
She reached back for something extra on her fastball and worked the outside corner to perfection to strike out the side
She struck out eight of the final 10 batters she faced
“The whole year she’s gotten better as the game goes on,” coach Harold Cooley III said
“I think that’s a credit to her being able to mix up pitches and keep batters on their heels and make them chase out of the zone.”
Schweitzer is taking over in the circle for Kayla O’Boyle
who spent the last three years racking up strikeouts
She was a Newsday All-Long Island first-team selection in 2023 when she broke her own school record for strikeouts in a season
I played with her for three years and I’ve known her since I was so young
so having to fill those shoes has been so much fun,” Schweitzer said
“I text her all the time and she’s always supporting me.”
Kylie Balvin drove in Madison Johnston on a single to rightfield for the first run of the game in the second inning
Maggie Schumacher hit a two-run double later in the inning
Penelope Suarez scored from third as Commack attempted to catch Lily McCabe stealing second to cut Northport’s deficit to 4-1 in the third inning
Commack answered with four runs in the fourth as Amanda Sackstein hit a two-run single
Schweitzer had an RBI single and Sophia Emanuel had an RBI groundout
sending Schweitzer back onto the field with an 8-1 lead
“She could be throwing strikes right down the middle and no one is hitting it
we can all field the ball and make the plays for her.”
Seniors Balvin and Emily Kraus each went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run
The win gives Commack (11-0) a two-game cushion atop Suffolk III with Northport (9-2) in second place
they’ve really executed on every game plan we’ve had to start the year,” Cooley said

Commack midfield Zachary Fishman drives to the net as Riverhead midfield Jacob Ohlbaum stays close during a Suffolk lacrosse game
Zachary Fishman and James Pagano have been playing lacrosse with each other since they were around 5 years old
Those little kids have grown into high school seniors and their connection for Commack after all this time is undeniable
“You can tell we’ve been playing together our whole lives,” Fishman said
“This is our last chance and we’re going to make it count.”
They took turns setting each other up over the course of the Suffolk I boys lacrosse game Tuesday at Riverhead’s Pulaski Sports Complex
They also scored without each other’s help and set up others
Fishman finished with five goals and five assists and Pagano delivered four goals and four assists
and the Cougars rolled past the Blue Waves 16-3
“They’re really strong players for us,” coach Billy Grant said
“They’re the foundation of our offense and for our team
really strong personalities and really good lacrosse players.”
Pagano has committed to Richmond and Fishman to Geneseo
the two attackmen/midfielders and captains are committed to helping Commack (3-5
“That’s kind of always been the question with Commack
but how are we going to do in between the lines and on the defensive end?” Pagano said
He saw those other facets shine on this day
fed Fishman for a shot up top from almost 20 yards out — 1-0
Then Fishman fed Pagano for a goal a minute later
After Logan Dempsey scored for Riverhead (3-6
13-2 after three and 15-2 after Pagano assisted on two Fishman goals in the first four minutes of the fourth
“Just our connection together has really fired on all cylinders this year,” Pagano said
Riverhead went 14-4 last year — the best record in program history — and eliminated Commack in the first round
But the Blue Waves lost a lot of offense on graduation day
“A learning year,” coach Vic Guadagnino said
We can’t compete at that level right now.”

Update: The new RH Outlet in Commack is now expected to open Thursday
A brand-new RH Outlet — the discount retailer for the company known as Restoration Hardware — is eyeing an opening date for its new Commack gallery
Occupying part of the space previously held by a Target store that closed in 2019
The targeted grand opening date is March 27
The Town of Smithtown last year approved plans for the RH Outlet at 4 Henry St.
which is in the sprawling Commack South Shopping Center
The outlet will cover nearly 41,000 square feet
RH’s expansion to Commack aligns with its strategy to offer discounted merchandise through its RH Outlet stores
discontinued and overstocked items outside of RH’s core sales channels
RH operates 38 such outlets across the U.S., Canada and Europe, including one in Tanger Outlets in Riverhead
There’s also an RH gallery store in East Hampton
Founded as Restoration Hardware in 1979 in California
In addition to its outlet stores, the retailer counts 71 RH Galleries and has other ventures, such as the RH Guesthouse in Manhattan (pictured below) and Waterworks Showrooms for bath and kitchen products

It was an amazing atmosphere for a playoff game
All the boys from school showed up to support us
5 Huntington (16-5) will play top-seeded Brentwood in a semifinal at 7 p.m
“We talked about being in control of what we could control,” Huntington coach Perry Marinelli said
When we learned that [Sofia] Vasselman was allowed to play
we had to make adjustments to our defensive game plan
But we play five as one and we have athletes that scramble and rotate on defense to help each other out.”
Commack’s leading scorer and the two-time League II MVP — who was ejected from the regular-season finale against Bay Shore and received a one-game suspension — was cleared to play in the Suffolk Class AAA girls basketball playoffs
Vasselman petitioned for a temporary restraining order and it was granted by Suffolk State Supreme Court Justice C
Stephen Hackeling on Monday at the Riverhead courthouse
allowing her to be eligible for Thursday’s game
“I was happy I was able to play and could finish my career on my terms,” she said
“Huntington came out with a fire and they’re very well-coached and prepared
And I knew the crowd was going to be into the game
I just blocked out the noise and didn’t let it get into my head
who averaged 20 points per game this season
was harassed all game by a suffocating Blue Devils defense and finished with a team-high 12 points
“When we heard that Sofia was going to play
we made some quick adjustments,” Huntington point guard Ava McDonald said
The passionate crowd was deafening throughout the contest
The atmosphere was electric with both student sections packed
“Both school districts communicated a great game plan and we capped the attendance at 400,” said Pat Friel
the director of athletics for the Commack School District
“Social media was all over the court case and the decision and we understood it was a hyper-sensitive situation for everyone involved
We were very happy with our security and the school spirit

Commack took the lead with a 15-7 third quarter and led 36-35 with 1:40 left in the game
Donaghy’s step-back three-pointer gave Huntington a 38-36 lead
"It was all about the defense,” McDonald said
Grace Gordon and Madyn Kalb were all over Vasselman and they had no other answer.”

Angry Shrimp in a spicy red sauce over zucchini linguine at Patrizia's Marquee in Commack
Since 2016, Patrizia’s, the family-owned spot from Naples-born brothers Gennaro and Giacomo Alaio that launched in the Bronx in 1991, has had a presence on Long Island. The restaurants in Hicksville, Massapequa and Hauppauge are known for reasonably priced, oversized portions and the boisterous belting of everyone-knows-the-words, celebratory anthems in the dining rooms
The recent opening of Patrizia’s Marquee in Commack brings a more intimate
less family-style — devoid of the napkin-waving tradition that the other locations are famously known for
manager of the Hicksville site and one of the many family members involved in Patrizia’s explained
"not everyone likes shaking the napkins on a Saturday night
so we were considering what the next step was for growing Long Island."
Patrizia's Marquee in Commack is a more intimate offshoot of the original Long Island locations in Hicksville
a partner in the other Long Island locations
"Mike brings that younger mindset to Patrizia’s," Luisi said
Whereas the Hicksville spot is filled with long tables
with Friday and Saturday night disco parties capping dinner service
"Its success made us think we needed a more ‘marquee’ spot in Commack
that leveled up what we were doing in Massapequa."
Patrizia’s fans will be happy to see that the menu still includes Italian American family-style veal and chicken favorites from Marsala to Parm ($28-$42)
Pastas from carbonara to Bolognese ($27-$39)
There’s baked clams ($16-$32) and calamari ($20-$30); traditional meatballs ($18-$34)
but also veal meatballs with a white wine truffle sauce ($20-$36) and housemade sausage ($22-$32)
Veal chops ($72) are prepared Valdostana — topped with Prosciutto di Parma and melted mozzarella in a creamy wine and mushroom sauce — or Parmigiana
There’s a chicken Carbone in spicy vodka sauce ($32 — $42)
loaded with hot cherry peppers and mozzarella ($32 — $42)
Pastas like Patrizia’s moneybags — stuffed with cheese in a mushrooms
guanciale and cognac sauce ($32-$39) — have some new neighbors on the menu
too: squid ink linguine loaded with shellfish
and a porcini mushroom and truffled champagne paccheri (both $32-$39)
Forty- to 50-day dry-aged steaks include a bone-in rib-eye ($99) and 18-oz bone-in NY strip ($55)
studded with leather banquettes and neon lighting or the less flashy dining room
with its glass front room that glitters nicely
the community has already embraced this new kid on the block

Commack will be home to the largest South Asian grocery store in Suffolk County
Sanjha Bazaar is opening in the former Ace Hardware location at 2160 Jericho Turnpike
catering to a community that currently has to travel farther west for these items
The endeavor is led by Long Island entrepreneur Mohinder Pal Singh
who owns 17 Dunkin’ and two Pizza Hut locations on the Island
“The South Asian grocery store business has been on my mind for many
many years — specifically in Suffolk County
because currently most of these kinds of stores are in Nassau County,” said Singh
While the store previously advertised it would open in “early October,” it now plans to open its doors toward the end of the month
A large channel letter sign was added to the storefront in recent weeks
taking the place of a “coming soon” banner
Raza Dastgir, a Dix Hills resident, has already toured the soon-to-open grocery store. Dastgir is the co-founder and CEO of “The Halal Guide,” an online community that boasts over 110,000 followers on Instagram
Dastgir said the store’s offerings seem comparable to large South Asian grocers in Hicksville, like Maharaja Farmer’s Market
He noted seeing fresh juice machines as well as small restaurant-style takeout options during his visit
“It’s the little things that they’re adding in there that are going to make it a one-stop shop and very convenient for the community here,” Dastgir said
Commack was chosen as the store’s location due to its presence in the “center” of Suffolk County
Sanjha Bazaar fits neatly between major roads Jericho Turnpike and Veteran’s Memorial Highway
Although there are some South Asian grocery options in Suffolk — particularly in Selden — they are far and in between
Sanjha Bazaar stands out among them in size
“And sometimes it’s not because I want to – sometimes it’s because I have to.”
Singh had leased the property early this year
joining the existing co-tenants PetSmart and Applebee’s
While he did not provide a fixed date for the store’s opening
Singh said he is “working on opening as soon as possible.”
Singh emphasized that Sanjha Bazaar will welcome communities from across Long Island and beyond
“Our goal is to give the communities a very new and unique experience in South Asian foods and
keep the needs of all people in mind,” Singh said

The luxury home furnishings retailer formerly known as Restoration Hardware plans to open two Long Island stores
including a discount outlet in part of the space that an “underperforming” Target vacated six years ago
An RH Outlet is planned for part of a former Target store in Commack
according to building plans submitted to the Town of Smithtown
an RH Gallery planned for Manhasset is one of seven full-price home furnishings stores that RH will open in North America in 2025
according to the retailer's third-quarter earnings report
Two international galleries in London and Paris also are planned for this year
which also includes introducing almost an entirely new product lineup starting last summer
helped turn around a sales slump last year
as high interest rates dampened sales of new homes — and the need for new furniture industrywide
"We believe the important investments we are making during this depressed housing cycle are creating a level of strategic separation in our industry that rivals the most important brands in the world,” Gary Friedman
told analysts during an earnings call in December
the Town of Smithtown issued a building permit for interior alterations for the approximately 41,000-square-foot RH Outlet planned for 4 Henry St

RH’s outlets “provide an efficient means to sell primarily returned merchandise and
discontinued and overstock merchandise outside of our core sales channels,” according to RH's 2023 annual report
RH’s 38 discount outlets lack the opulence of the retailer's full-price furniture galleries

The Cosentino Realty Group in Islandia owns the Commack South Shopping Center
RH did not respond to a request for comment
so it’s unclear when the Commack store would open
As for the retailer’s other new location slated for Long Island
a 19,410-square-foot store would open in the high-end Americana Manhasset shopping center
according to plans submitted to the Town of North Hempstead for approval
applications for a building permit for interior alternations and other work were submitted by Fifth Avenue of Long Island Realty
which owns Americana Manhasset and is an affiliate of Castagna Realty Co
The RH store’s future address is listed as 2128 Northern Blvd
but a Brooks Brothers men’s clothing store is currently located at that address
Castagna confirmed that RH will open at Americana Manhasset this year but declined to provide more information
Brooks Brothers did not respond to a request for comment
so it is unclear whether the clothing store would close
relocate in the shopping center or downsize to make room for RH
an RH Outlet opened at the Tanger Outlets Riverhead in 2008
and an RH Gallery opened in East Hampton in 2011
which was known as Restoration Hardware until 2012

they’ve migrated to this gallery strategy of freestanding
much larger stores … to display products in a more elegant
The luxury furniture and home décor retailer has 71 RH Galleries
and 38 RH Outlet stores in the United States

While lower-end retailers have been more affected by the slowdown in furniture sales
RH is more resilient because it is a luxury lifestyle brand built around furniture
who cited as an example the RH restaurants and wine bars
which are in 19 of the retailer’s furniture galleries
RH’s “customer is a much higher-income consumer
That’s not someone who’s making a choice between paying the rent and buying a new sofa,” he said
