Department responded around 1:20 a.m 26 to a shooting at the southwest side of the South Hill park ski masks and a silver Jeep that had barreled into a neighboring fence was found unconscious and covered in blood spatter with a gunshot wound to his head Police have not publicly updated the conditions of the teens who were shot Aaron Kirby wrote in court records dated Nov 5 that “he does not know why they were shot” and “no one has come forward,” although the circumstances led him to believe two groups of teens were engaged in some type of illegal activity Initial information led police to believe the two teens were shot inside the crashed Jeep had run from the car and hopped the fences to escape police discovered a .45 caliber pistol with the serial number scratched away another pistol on the floor of the passenger side and a full mask that was believed to have covered the teen’s face which indicated to police that the injured teenager was wearing it when he was shot The Jeep was also littered with bullet holes in a linear pattern so police concluded the person shooting was chasing the car as it was attempting to drive away Another ski mask was found behind the home where the silver Jeep crashed affirming law enforcement’s belief that a third person had run from the scene They also found discarded clothing and alcohol containers in the area a place that is a “known location” for underage drinking and party activity at night the 15-year-old boy with the injured hip was being loaded into a red Jeep by some friends when police responded and stopped them The friends told police they didn’t know what happened and had only shown up to help the boy police note that the owner of the red Jeep is known to police because she has been “contacted before” at a shooting this summer and during a homicide investigation earlier in the year There is no indication to believe anyone was arrested yet in connection with the shooting Give directly to The Spokesman-Review's basket junior Matt Jones had two choices: raise his arms in defense to block the ball from getting into the basket or be less aggressive and allow the student to make a shot.  “We were just out there trying to have some fun,” said Matt who is part of the high school’s Unified Recreational Basketball team “Wiping the floor with someone is not fun and not the purpose.” Matt’s actions fit the goal of Unified Champion Schools, a Special Olympics program that promotes social inclusion by fostering interactions between students with and without intellectual disabilities The program is designed to create a sense of belonging through activities like unified sports youth leadership and whole-school engagement said special education teacher Danelle Hovenkamp I like being a part of it because it gives me a chance to promote inclusion in a different setting than school,” said social worker Kendra Beasley While she still wanted the team to win — they actually won all three games at the January Comstock Park invitation — the more important piece is that it builds students’ confidence and allows them to find joy and make friends Hovenkamp brought the Unified Champion Schools program to Comstock Park High School this school year I asked about bringing the program to the school,” said Hovenkamp who helped develop the program at her previous district “It is important for the students,” Hovenkamp said of the program’s promotion of inclusion “I have seen gen-ed students go into the special-ed (classrooms) because of being part of this program and I have seen special-ed students popping in to visit friends in other classrooms.” Programs are planned by the student-led Youth Activation Committee or as more commonly called by the students The committee has worked on inclusion events it hosted a photo contest called “Be the I in Kind,” where the letters “K,” “N” and “D” were on a wall and students took pictures of themselves and each other being the “I.” The students also decide on the sports activities it was the Unified Bowling Team and for the winter the basketball program.  Practices are during the school’s flex time Practices during school give students the chance to try a sport they may not have had access to before or conflicts with another sport’s schedule Jones said he had always wanted to try basketball but his schedule did not offer the opportunity After learning a friend was participating in the recreational basketball program he was partnered with senior Cameron Dykhouse who has played basketball since elementary school.  “I had friends with special abilities who were participating so I thought let’s give it a shot,” Cameron said with a smile adding he has enjoyed connecting with other students and felt more a part of the school with perhaps only his family cheering louder than everyone else when he made a basket.  It was ninth-grader Jesus Quiroga who suggested the basketball program for the winter said he made the suggestion because he thought it was a fun sport that anyone could play “I enjoy being with my teammates because they are my close friends in class and at lunch,” Jesus said “We get to know each other more and do stuff together.”  Read more from Comstock Park: • She wants students to have ‘every opportunity’ and ‘learn in the best ways they can’For this grad, it is all about turning negative energy into positive Park had an elusive all-state quarterback and a dominant running back that could make the Panthers’ young linemen look good But Donovan Cummings and Easton Hood are off playing college football leaving big shoes to fill in the backfield that offensive line returns four starters and should allow Comstock Park’s new skill players to get acclimated to the varsity level or at least not get hit in the backfield very often “We return a lot of experience in the trenches,” Comstock Park coach Doug Samuels said “I think that’s where we need to hang our hat this year with some big question marks in the other spots I think our offensive and defensive lines should be our strength this year.” Ryan Jenkins and Santos Ramirez and junior Daquan Carpenter are the veteran blockers up front with Jenkins and Ramirez entering their third year as starters Martinez emerged as a key cog on the line last year and said his unit has embraced their status as the team’s leaders this offseason “It’s about us making sure that everyone shows up as a group,” he said he gave us a speech and said this (offensive line) group is probably the group that will take this team the furthest We all try to be accountable to that when we’re in the weight room or during our sets We know that this season is a very big one We’re trying to lead this group and this team because it’s very young Though Comstock Park graduated one of its best players in recent memory in Cummings the Panthers do have a bit of experience at quarterback Ashton Fish spent some time under center as a sophomore but missed his junior campaign in 2023 due to a knee injury He’ll have an established target in senior wideout Christian Robinson and a rising star at the position in 6-foot-4 sophomore Jace Cummings “I think we have a lot of guys that haven’t been household names that have a good opportunity to step up and have a great season Comstock Park allowed 380 points last season which is the most for the Panthers in a single year since at least 1950 That total is a big skewed by a 70-0 loss to West Catholic in Round 1 of the playoffs but Samuels said fixing that side of the ball has been the team’s focus this offseason and then if we get the opportunity to compete in the playoffs we’ve got to show up and compete,” he said “That’s something we haven’t done very well in my tenure here That’s something that we’ve got to improve on make them earn their entire way down the field and not give up big plays.” Comstock Park hired a new strength and conditioning coach former Central Michigan tight end Hunter Buczkowski who is also coaching the Panther linebackers “He’s been helping to build a lot of muscle in the weight room,” Jenkins said you can already see how strong their getting I feel like we would’ve been a lot stronger and a lot bigger but these younger kids are getting good work in with him.” Follow along for more info on this year’s Comstock Park football team 2023 review: Comstock Park went 0-3 against playoff-bound teams and also fell to Sparta during the regular season but they secured a Division 5 playoff berth with a 25-18 win over Newaygo in Week 9 The offense averaged 27 points per contest and generally kept them in most games as the Panthers allowed at least 45 points in four of their five losses The highlight of the season was a thrilling 35-29 Week 7 win over Hopkins in which Donovan Cummings tossed a 33-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass on the game’s final play 2024 outlook: The Panthers will look to avenge last year’s season-opening loss to Howard City Tri-County before hosting Holland Christian in Week 2 The Panthers have five home games in the first six weeks which will at least give the young skill players a friendly environment until the wrap up the regular season with three consecutive road games If Fish can return to his pre-injury form that saw him compete for snaps as a sophomore and if Jace Cummings can show he’s ready to take that next step as a big and athletic receiver Comstock Park could have a pretty potent offense it will come down to much the defense has improved and how well that strong offensive line leads the way “I feel like our (offensive line) group has what it takes,” he said “I think me and the other players all know that and we’re very excited because we’ve been playing together for a few years and our team chemistry and everything else is very good 2024 schedule (conference games indicated by *) Use of and/or registration on any portion of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement, (updated In just a handful of calendar days, the countdown to Christmas 2024 will reach double digits For Adrian’s sake, though, putting on and perfecting a holiday scene — as has been the case for more than one decade with the Comstock Christmas Riverwalk — takes plenty of time planning and the involvement of several groups of people from organizers to city of Adrian employees The 11th annual Comstock Christmas Riverwalk is coming back to Adrian this December with a tree lighting ceremony scheduled for Dec 6 as part of Adrian’s December edition of its First Fridays monthly campaign Christmas trees in Comstock Park will be on display for all to enjoy from the first week of December until early January 2025 a news release from the city of Adrian said Those wanting to get their hands on a Comstock Park Christmas tree will be able to make their purchase starting at 8 a.m which includes lights and a commemorative ornament Christmas tree sales for Comstock Christmas Riverwalk have regularly gone live on the third Wednesday of September to allow time for planning the layout of the park all available trees — 530 — sold out within three days Tree purchases can be made during business hours inside Adrian City Hall in downtown Adrian, 135 E. Maumee St., on the first floor. Trees also can be purchased online at tinyurl.com/comstocktrees There will be 340 trees sold online and 200 trees sold at City Hall the idea turned Adrian tradition to decorate Comstock Park with lighted Christmas trees started with just about 30 trees in its first year as a holiday event there will be 540 trees available for families individuals and local businesses around Lenawee County to decorate The popularity of the event has allowed Comstock Christmas Riverwalk to be successful but it's also become a holiday tradition for many in Adrian and Lenawee County said former Adrian Mayor and longtime Christmas Riverwalk organizer Jim Berryman “The success of this event is not because of me by any means,” Berryman said “The success (of Comstock Christmas Riverwalk) is because of the people who buy and decorate the trees I have always said the trees are the star of the show.” Comstock Park was the site of a successful Guinness World Record attempt in 2019 for the most cut and lighted Christmas trees in one location Coinciding with the sixth annual Comstock Christmas Riverwalk at the time 676 trees were placed and lit in Comstock Park the park has seen the addition of decorative displays for the holidays including strings of lights suspended over the River Raisin the artificial Tree of Wishes and the Adrian Noon Rotary Club’s Rotary Peace Arch Having the displays breaks up the park and gives people an opportunity to walk around and take various seasonal/family photos Subscribe Now: For all the latest local developments, breaking news, and high school and college sports content.
