When Father Tony Wroblewski woke up the day after Easter Sunday to his cellphone pinging with text messages
he had a flight to catch to Rome with his good friends
which was going to change everything in Rome," Wroblewski said Friday
where he and the Congers traveled after spending a few historical days in Rome
Wroblewski is the pastor of Our Lady of the Lakes Parish
Alice in Pequot Lakes and Our Lady of Lourdes in Pine River
He and the Congers had planned the trip to Poland last year
they decided to tack on Rome for a few days because it was a jubilee year
the holy doors are opened at the four major basilicas in Rome during this time
"They have a holy door that's actually sealed up by brick
but is only opened once every 25 years for the jubilee year
That's been happening for hundreds of years
and with it come prayers and blessings by going through them," Wroblewski said
Not only did they get to the churches to go through the holy doors
first they landed a prime viewing spot Wednesday
to watch the transfer of Pope Francis' body from his Casa Santa Marta residence
Peter's Basilica in the Vatican to lie in state for public viewing until his funeral Saturday
They were able to see Pope Francis being carried in an open casket from the second row
"We didn't know what the lines were going to be like
but we assumed people were going to descend in masses to Rome," Wroblewski said
"I don't know if it was a miracle or just a great blessing
but we were able to get in on one of the side entrances
"So we were able to get in really quickly through security
we were able to go to one of the areas where we were in row 2
They left their nearby rental apartment at 7:30 a.m
and were shocked that there wasn't a line of people to get in at the side entrance
They found their spot over an hour before the service started
we could see all the bishops and cardinals
and then them carrying his body through the square
and they were singing beautiful hymns and Litany of the Saints," Wroblewski said
"And it's just a very prayerful mood," he said
it was heartwarming and astounding to see the number of people who showed up to see the pope and to pray for him
and we felt so blessed to be able to be there for that," he said
Upon seeing others who waited eight hours to see Pope Francis for just 3 seconds
Wroblewski said: "We felt even more blessed that we had the opportunity to be there for that whole hourlong ceremony."
To be in Rome at such an historic time was something
He and the Congers were amazed to hear so many different languages being spoken and to see so many different races and ethnicities as all those people came to say goodbye to the pope
"And it was interesting too to see them praying
but they're the same prayers that we say every day," Wroblewski said
Mary Conger said it felt surreal to be there at that time in history
and to see all the different news media stations from all over the world set up around the Vatican
They all commented on the universal nature of the Catholic church
Pope Francis had his detractors and wasn't a favorite pope among traditionalists
but you wouldn't have known that by seeing all the people
"It was just a blessing that we planned to be there already
but for a completely different purpose," Wroblewski said
Wroblewski and the Congers last traveled to Poland together in 2019
when they also visited Rome for the diaconate ordination of Father Matthew Miller
who recently served in the Brainerd lakes area and at St
Christopher's Church in Nisswa for a few years
Rockland County Business Journal
Both prostitution and the unlicensed practice of massage are illegal in Clarkstown
and town officials have turned to the Court to close down four establishments it alleges are practicing both
Clarkstown last week filed a lawsuit in Rockland County Supreme Court seeking to close down HMS Cosmetic Inc
an establishment it says is offering both illegal massage and sexual conduct for a fee at 159 Route 304 in Bardonia
Clarkstown also filed a lawsuit against Happy Spa 46
operating at 44-46 Lake Road in Congers and Great King Spa at 16 North Route 9W in Congers
are offering unlicensed massage and prostitution services to the public
Iglesias is the owner of Iglesias Real Estate Holdings of NY (owner of 44-46 Lake Road) and serves as president of Snow Church Realty Corporation (owner of 16 North Route 9W)
Casmac Associates is the owner of 159 Route 304 in Bardonia
filed against both the owners of the properties and the massage parlor tenants
seek closing orders to abate a “serious public nuisance.”
undercover police officers went to the facility on two separate occasions last November where they say workers agreed to provide a full-body massage and “manual stimulation of genitals” for fees ranging from $60 to $100
said while receiving their full-body massages
the masseuse made a “gesture” suggesting an offer of a sexual act in exchange for more money
undercover officers visited the spa facilities multiple times over a period of several months
and were offered genital stimulation for between $60 and $140
officers received full body massages and in four of the instances
received “gestures” offering genital manipulation
the undercover officer says the masseuse asked him how much he normally paid for genital manipulation
He also states the masseuse “accepted the $100 payment for the stated genital manipulation.”
Offering massage services without a license and engaging in prostitution are violative of the town code
The Town charges the continued operations are “criminal nuisances.” The complaints says the owners/occupants’ certificates of occupancy do not allow for use of the premises for massage
The Town claims that unless the operations are closed
the Town will be irreparably harmed and it has no other adequate remedy at law
It asks the Court to grant permanent injunctions against the current use and removal of the operators at each location
the premises at 159 Route 304 has a history of providing illegal massage and prostitution services
the Clarkstown Police and the District Attorney’s Special Victims and Community Prosecution closed down a similar operation at this address called the Z Green Spa along with several other similar operations in Clarkstown and Nyack
the owner of 16 North Route 9W (Great King Spa) has an application pending before the Town of Clarkstown Planning Board to build a three story-senior housing development with twelve one-bedroom units on the property it owns at 36 North Route 9W in Congers
Rockland County has been using the “public nuisance” doctrine since 2014 where a fine of $1,000 per day was imposed against New City Spa that operated at 55-71 South Main Street in New City
The fine amassed to $800,000 over the life of the lawsuit for violation of the County’s public nuisance law
No court dates have been set in either of the cases
The developer of the Cedar Corners warehouse project in Congers returned to the Clarkstown Planning Board with two announcements: first
they’ve revised the scoping for its Draft Environmental Impact Statement to include concerns raised by the various government agencies charged with assessing the environmental impacts of the project; and
they have increased the size of the project from its prior submission
These announcements were made to a largely empty room
even though nearly 600,000 square feet of proposed warehouse space will sit about 200 yards from the residential neighborhood of single-family homes off Old Haverstraw Road in Congers
lined with cul-de-sacs such as Berry Court
The plan calls for the development of 41 acres comprising 16 distinct tax lots
The lots would be merged into three developable parcels
with warehouses planned for two of the three parcels
The third parcel has a conceptual plan for retail or fast-food
but no specific plans have been submitted to the town for that parcel
a Brooklyn-based developer of industrial properties and multifamily communities in New York
is the owner and developer and is working with the Town Planning Board on scoping for the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS)
Once the DEIS is complete and approved by the Planning Board in a public hearing
The meeting was part of a continuing process to allow residents and land use professionals to weigh in on the “scoping” of the DEIS
the State Environmental Quality Review Act
The DEIS addresses potential significant adverse environmental impacts that can be reasonably anticipated and/or have been identified in the scoping process
The largest of the three lots will house 383,652 square feet of warehouse in two buildings with 71 berths and would be occupied by a single user for warehousing
The smaller lot contains a 187,000 square foot warehouse building and would be used by up to 28 occupants
The site is designated by New York State as a “significant natural community,” populated with oak and tulip forests
and is part of a 175-acre contiguous habitat for wildlife
The DEIS will expand on the impacts the project will have on that habitat and verify the developer’s submission as to the scope and size of the natural habitat
The site also has 5.5 acres of wetlands as well as wetlands contiguous to adjacent sites
The DEIS will also look at the likelihood of groundwater contamination at the site and preservation of the wetlands
impervious surfaces (hard surfaces that prevent water from soaking into the ground) will cover more than 21 of the 41 acres of the project site
Part of the revised plan now adds 299 Route 303 North
The developer is offering to keep that parcel undeveloped as open space with a conservation easement
The area in Congers along Route 303 is designated as a “Disadvantaged Community” under the NYS DEC guidelines
requiring a more detailed analysis of the environmental impacts to ensure that the community benefits from the state’s transition to cleaner
making the mitigation of air quality issues from diesel sources and trucking more important
The various parcels are zoned for Commercial Office (CO)
Commercial Office Support (COS) and Local Shopping (LS)
The developer has declined to disclose whether it has tenants for the project or who the tenants are for the various buildings
It has indicated that the users of the larger warehouses would likely be interstate trucking companies
This lack of information has repeatedly been an issue as Clarkstown and other Rockland municipalities continue to field ongoing warehouse applicants seeking Planning Board approval
As residents have pointed out — particularly in the case of the Lincoln Equities warehouse project
on Route 303 in Congers — it is impossible for the town to adequately evaluate proposals if it cannot truly gauge the use and traffic impacts of the project
Primary access to the site will be from Route 303
a New York State road under the jurisdiction of the NYS Department of Transportation
The proposal is broken down into three development projects
but SEQRA requires the assessment of the entire project
the process of breaking a larger development into smaller projects to avoid meaningful environmental review
Proposed Lot 1 consists of two warehouse/office buildings connected by a common corridor with a total of 383,652 square feet
The maximum height of the building is 40 feet
While 402 parking spaces are required per Town code for the proposed buildings
404 parking spaces are provided along with 71 loading berths
The proposal for Lot 2 consists of a conceptual fast food drive-thru restaurant with a building area of approximately 1,800 square feet and 36 parking spaces
just to the south of Congers Colonial Plaza
The proposal for Lot 3 called for a conceptual two-story building proposed for warehouse and offices
The original plan was for a combined office/warehouse of 147,600 square feet with 209 parking spaces
The revised plan is no longer conceptual and ups the square footage to 187,200 square feet
The maximum height of the building is 35 feet
The expected tenants are small users such as machine shops and automotive repair workers
in its review of the proposed draft scoping document
including the loss of the existing forest and its impact on climate
and number and type of trees that will need to be replanted
The County also recommended an analysis of energy impacts and an evaluation of greenhouse gas emissions
a study of existing wetlands and efforts to avoid potential negative impacts on those wetlands
as well as the fiscal and economic impacts of the proposed development
The property is bordered by Route 303 to the east
Multifamily residential is located north of the site
and warehouse and manufacturing uses are located south of the site
The property surrounds an existing shopping center and parking lot and existing dwellings with access off Meola Road which connects to NYS Route 303
Single-family residential homes are to the west
across the CSX railroad tracks and adjacent to town-owned land known as the “celery” or “onion” fields
Warehouse projects on Route 303 have generally met with opposition from the New York State Department of Transportation with extensive mitigating steps required before approvals are granted
Development along the Route 303 corridor includes projects by Intercos for additional warehouse space
and Chartwell and Aktina for expansion of their existing facilities
A Clarkstown drug dealer who supplied the fentanyl-laced narcotics used in six Rockland overdoses
was sentenced Thursday to nearly 22 years in federal prison
The victims were friends and customers of Justin Turnick
the 26-year-old from Congers who sat in federal court in White Plains listening to the heart-wrenching accounts of the parents whose children battled mental health and addictions before succumbing to the pills provided by the young man they called a predator
And while Turnick expressed remorse
the parents and the judge for showing concern only for himself during and after the deaths — denying involvement
hiding evidence and even blaming the victims for their drug use
the powerful synthetic opioid that has annually caused more than 100,000 deaths in the U.S
requesting a prison term of 8 1/2 years saying the defendant was the victim of a horrible upbringing
and he tried often to get her to stop using to no avail
He also had learning difficulties and struggled through his education
ending up at the Birchwood School in West Nyack where he met some of his eventual victims
His mother died of an overdose in January 2018
hours after a 19-year-old Turnick caught her and his older brother getting high in the bathroom and kicked them out of the house
His brother died of an overdose in April 2021
Turnick faced a minimum of five years in prison
which Halpern was required to consider but was not bound by
called for a prison term of 210 to 262 months
The plea agreement called for a stipulated guideline of 235 months
which is what prosecutors Ryan Allison and Kate Wheelock urged Halpern to impose
The deaths that resulted from Turnick's drug-dealing were ample reason for them to seek an even stiffer prison term
prosecutors noted in their sentencing memo
but they did not because of his troubled background
"While Turnick's personal circumstances should be considered
it is also deeply concerning that having seen so many drug poisonings in his own family and having experienced a non-fatal drug poisoning of his own Turnick still did not change his destructive distribution behavior," the memo stated
The prosecutors emphasized that each case was a "fentanyl poisoning," sharing in the position of grieving families that the term "overdose" suggests those who died were solely responsible for their deaths rather than victims of whoever provided the drugs
Turnick was indicted in 2023 and pleaded guilty in August 2024 to conspiracy to distribute fentanyl
First death involved 'fake percs'The first death was that of 19-year-old Gustaf Olsen on Feb
Olsen and his girlfriend bought pills from Turnick
The latter pills were actually "fake percs," with the oxycodone replaced with fentanyl
although the girlfriend claimed Turnick had told them they were only oxycodone
warm son beset by attention deficit and mental health issues that schools regularly failed to address
"My son didn't choose to use drugs because it was fun," she said
to bear the life that had become unbearable."
She suggested society bore much of the blame for her son's death but that Turnick's callous actions "took me from being a mother of two to being a mother of one alive and one dead." She urged that every time he feels the sun on his face
Turnick realize that "my son Gustaf will never feel that sun because of what you did."
Second victim was high school classmateJust a month after Olsen's death
Turnick first sold drugs to 22-year-old Jonathan Shashoua of Haverstraw
Shashoua was a musician and songwriter who had recently completed a demo album and an associate's degree and was looking forward to moving to New York City to continue college
He was working through anxiety and mental health issues and the effects of the Covid lockdown and his mother sent him to a residential treatment facility that spring
Turnick sold Shashoua fentanyl-laced Xanax
The next morning his mother found him unresponsive in his bedroom and emergency responders pronounced him dead
called her son "Jonny Sunshine" and the light of her life
a gentle and beautiful soul," she told the judge
She said that Turnick's actions amounted to "depravity and a callous indifference to human life" but that she had "compassion for the boy who grew up with family trauma and loss."
"But family dysfunction does not give a free pass to commit crimes and destroy lives," she said in her impact statement
"It does not give a person a license to kill
The defendant is an adult man responsible for his actions
There is no excuse for repeatedly and knowingly distributing this poison that he knew was killing and injuring people."
Turnick gave an 18-year-old romantic partner a pill he said was Xanax but actually contained fentanyl
He brought her to a friend's house where the friend and his mother tried to help her before calling for an ambulance
Emergency responders gave her Narcan and revived her
was interviewed by police and claimed he did not know what the teenager had ingested
Turnick was present for the death of the third victim
Two nights earlier he had gone there with a bag of drugs and had to revive her with Narcan after she passed out from the heroin she used
He stayed over again on the night of July 30 and they continued to use drugs
Turnick was seen on surveillance video leaving the house and going to his car
When he returned he alerted Koenig's mother
who tried but failed to revive the teenager
When they interviewed Turnick he denied cleaning the room or leaving the house and said Koenig had taken nitrous oxide and not heroin or pills
Koenig's mother, Shoko Saito, said her daughter was full of life, with a heart as "big as it was kind." she remains haunted by the memory of that morning
seeing her lifeless body and pumping her chest repeatedly to try and save her
"Why would he give her drugs again after she had already overdosed the day before," she wrote in her impact statement
And more than that he was already responsible for the deaths of other victims
How could he keep doing this knowing exactly where it would lead."
The third non-fatal poisoning was a 23-year-old longtime friend of Turnick's in April 2022
at the same house where he had brought his romantic partner the previous year when she was unresponsive
as his sister sobbed and relatives of the victims scoffed
and he said that the fentanyl epidemic took over his life "and turned me into a monster."
In a handwritten note to the judge this week
Turnick expressed remorse for the pain he had wrought
"Every day I think about the victims and their families and I pray for their forgiveness which I probably don't deserve," he wrote
He said he was thankful for his arrest and incarceration because otherwise "I would probably be dead myself."
He acknowledged knowing the pain of losing family members to drug addiction and said he hopes to remain sober through his prison sentence and beyond so he can have a family himself one day
Halpern imposed the 262 months that was the top of the guideline range
He noted that Turnick took a cellphone photo of a passed out Koenig at 4:51 the morning she died

The Alden-Conger school board on Monday voted to approve Jenny Hanson as the district’s new superintendent
Hanson currently serves as the principal of Alden-Conger School
and will continue to work in this role after taking over the new role
She will be filling the position currently held by Allen Berg
who serves as superintendent for both Alden-Conger and Glenville-Emmons schools and submitted his resignation in February
Originally from a farm between Wells and Freeborn
Hanson is a graduate of Alden-Conger High School and has many years of teaching experience
After getting her education degree from South Dakota State University
she taught in South Dakota for a few years before moving back to southeast Minnesota when her husband got a job in Albert Lea
She taught for a year at Glenville-Emmons and eventually got a teaching job at Alden-Conger School
After eight years of working for Alden-Conger
Hanson took an administrative position in the Albert Lea school district
While working for the Albert Lea school district
Hanson pursued her director of community education license
She also got her principal license during this time
She became the principal of Alden-Conger School three years ago and has been in the role ever since
She got her superintendent license over the summer
Hanson said she had no immediate plans of becoming superintendent when she got her license
but she wanted to be qualified to help wherever she was needed
When it was announced that Berg was resigning from the position and the Alden-Conger school district would be separating from the Glenville-Emmons school district
it kind of felt like I was coming home,” Hanson said
Hanson will officially take over the position on July 1
She will continue to be the principal for Alden-Conger High School
which she said works great as it allows her to continue working closely with teachers and students
Hanson said she works well with Berg and the transition has been quite smooth
She also said she has a few very specific goals to work through once she becomes superintendent
is currently in a statutory operating debt and needs to get out of the deficit
“We have very strategically over this past school year looked at operations and trying to make everything as efficient as possible
and as financially responsible as possible,” Hanson said
One way the school plans to do this is by combining some classes
adding the plan would involve reductions and changes in the classroom structure to put the school in a more secure financial situation
Hanson said she wants to support the teachers as best she can during the transition
She held a meeting to try and alleviate any anxiety about the school’s new operation plan
She said the school must implement the plan while still being effective
meeting the students’ needs and helping them grow
The school district recently sent out a survey to students
parents and caregivers and other community members
and used the data to create a new strategic plan for the school district
Hanson said she and the school board go back to the survey answers whenever the school is making a decision to ensure they are following what the community
“It’s important that we’re all working on those things together,” she said
Hanson said the district plans to inform the community about changes being made to Alden-Conger School before the end of the school year

PARK RIDGE — Tara Ciannella found her station in life by doing what most heroes do
She ascended to her dream occupation — her “happy place” — by enduring pain
ignoring naysayers and taking one bold step after another
The borough native began her journey designing household effects
before co-owning a landscaping company with her mother and later
job-hopping as a sous chef at upscale restaurants in Bergen County
where she was usually the only female on the line
Each experience left her dissatisfied, she says, convincing her to start Tara’s Italian Cucina
a small business that she runs out of her home in Congers
and she prepares meals for on-the-go families
“It makes everything that I’ve been through worth it,” says Ciannella
Entertainment: Explore hundreds of animal-themed lanterns at Holiday Lights show at Bronx Zoo
Ciannella enjoys fringe celebrity status following appearances on reality shows “Chopped” and “Hell’s Kitchen,” the latter of which is hosted by British restauranteur Gordon Ramsay
arguably the most famous chef on the planet
is nothing like the overbearing boss he comes across on the show
strangers have recognized her in the most random places
such as at cooking classes and grocery stores — even south of the border
referring to having been thrust in the public eye
Ciannella placed second out of four contestants on a November 2017 episode of “Chopped,” a show on Food Network in which professional chefs race against a clock to create the best dishes — and to impress a panel of judges — with surprise ingredients
Baby octopus; rose water; and stinging nettle
a prickly green once used as a folk remedy for arthritis
were among the items used for their impromptu plates
Ciannella was inspired from an early age to operate a kitchen
Her Italian godparents lived on an adjacent property with a 7-acre farm on Spring Valley Road
she helped them to look after their tomato plants
“I always loved making people happy through food
I believe that you can create happiness around a dinner table just by giving someone a good meal.”
and the crops there are just as diverse as the produce she tended to as a child
She says she is assisted in maintaining the plot by her husband and her 9-year-old daughter
Having a garden is essential for clients who request vegetarian dishes
but there is no denying the carnivorous spirit in Ciannella
Ciannella tops her filet mignon or strip steak with red wine reduction sauce
Her favorite dishes to prepare are ravioli
“because they can be stuffed with anything,” and ricotta gnocchi
a fish stew that originated in San Francisco
She recently baked pizzas for 200 people using an Ooni oven at a benefit in New City
She describes her pie-making style as artisanal
explaining that she likes to “play around with toppings.” Her preferred combination is arugula
Ciannella was in a friend’s car traveling north on the Garden State Parkway when another vehicle suddenly swerved in front of theirs
causing it to careen off of the road and into a tree
at the junction of the parkway and the Atlantic City Expressway
broken ribs and a traumatic brain injury that resulted in memory loss
“Everything in my life got flipped upside-down,” Ciannella says
She was working in Philadelphia at the headquarters of Anthropologie
Ciannella says she did not like her role and that she planned to leave the company
because she could not remember how to perform important aspects of her job
“It was like the world was telling me not to do it.”
she bounced from one unfulfilling position to the next before settling on the realization that her destiny was to be a gourmet chef
she received a certificate from the School of Italian Studies at the International Culinary Center — formerly the Italian Culinary Academy — in Manhattan
Her catering business specializes in Greek
Italian and Spanish food — Mediterranean flavors — that she prepares and serves by herself
for events as large as weddings and for more intimate functions like farm-to-table dinners for two
a physical education teacher from Grand View-on-Hudson
She says she is “not very comfortable” in the kitchen and that she wanted someone to prepare food for her parties to allow her to entertain guests
and the chef now delivers meals to her home on Tuesday afternoons
It has taken pressure off of Pasquale and her partner to figure out what to make every night
says hiring Ciannella to be a chef in her home was “one of the best investments that I’ve ever made.”
She and her partner pay $250 per visit for Ciannella to cook dinners for them in their kitchen using ingredients the chef bought that day or harvested from her garden
“It’s like having a five-star restaurant in your home,” she says
“I don’t even want to go out to eat anymore.”
Arrigo says she sought such an arrangement because she wanted to eat healthier
“I never gain a pound on her food,” she says
She takes such good care in making sure that whatever she puts on the table is really fresh.”
Ciannella consults with first-time clients about allergies and dietary restrictions
from the accident to that stint in the fashion industry to leaving the restaurant scene
if I could — it’s my happy place,” she says
“Where I am is the exact place that I was meant to be,” she adds

Metrics details
Antarctica is currently losing net mass to the ocean primarily from West Antarctica and the Antarctic Peninsula
which together hold ~5.5 m of sea level rise potential
the East Antarctic Ice Sheet stores almost ten times more ice
and its evolution contributes significant uncertainty to sea level rise projections
mainly due to insufficient process-scale observations
Here we report the collapse of the Conger–Glenzer Ice Shelf in East Antarctica that culminated with its March 2022 disintegration
We use a combination of observations to document its evolution over four stages spanning 25 years
starting 1997–2000 when small calving events isolated it from the Shackleton Ice Shelf
followed by relative calving quiescence for a decade; the remaining ~1,200 km2 of the ice shelf disintegrated over a few days in mid-March 2022
These observations of the Conger–Glenzer Ice Shelf collapse shed light on the processes involved
the impacts of ocean and atmospheric warming and extreme weather events
have substantial implications for the stability of the Antarctic ice sheet and its contribution to future sea level rise

(a) The position of CG3 is shown in a Landsat image from 2006
CG3 was an along-flow bi-tip rift that formed ~ 15 km south of Bowman Island in that year
It propagated along-flow in both directions (b
after which widening rate accelerated and minor anastomosing spindle-shape fractures formed on both sides (e)
These expanded after 2018 (f,g) and eventually led to the calving of CG3 in 2021
(a) A Landsat image from 1989 shows the position of the CG2 rift structure
which began to appear in the surface in the wake of a subglacial rise around 2000
as shown in (b) an image from February 2000 (locations highlighted by red arrows)
This series of rifts propagated roughly perpendicular-to-flow
as shown in (c) an image from December 2006
(d) Continued expansion into spindle-shaped rifts by 2013
northward trends at the rift tips in the mid-2010s (e) enabled the individual rifts to eventually connect in ~ 2020
(f) An image from January 2022 shows these interconnected rifts forming lensing blocks (g) that served to further wedge the rift walls apart
(a) A Landsat 4 image from 1989 shows CG1 as a front-initiated rift that likely formed before 1973
relating to the tearing-like fashion of calving events that spawned the two large icebergs seen in this image
(b) A February 2000 image shows CG1 has turned eastward
after which it became dormant; (c) a new rift tip formed in ~ 2001 and continued propagating eastward before also becoming dormant (d) in ~ 2002
(e) Both rift tips were dormant as CG1 widened and deformed viscously over the next decade
shown here in 2011; CG2 and CG3 had propagated nearby during this time
(f) A 2020 image shows additional deformation and widening of CG1
particularly highlighting the status of its intra-rift mélange
sufficiently thin to manifest open water along the rift wall
(g) Two years later a January 2022 image shows CG1 status after CG3 calved
on the western end of CG1 to support backstress from Bowman Island
(h) A zoomed view (inset) shows a reactivation of CG1 at this time
with new brittle fractures extending southward from its rift walls
a February 2022 image captured about two weeks before the final collapse shows open water present in the intra-rift mélange and expansion of the new brittle fractures from ~ 0.5-1 km length to 10 s of km long
Tensile stresses likely related to increased flow velocities through late 2021, followed by compression upon a sharp slowdown in the early months of 2022 as shown in Fig.4 of the main text
Each scene shows the principal components of the strain rate tensor
where blue indicates tension and red indicates a compressive regime
