Multiple media reports and a statement from Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman (D) indicate that Cleveland-Cliffs is idling three steel mills
including the one at 900 Conshohocken Road in Conshohocken (Plymouth Township)
and there is no established timetable to reopen the plants
an official from the company refers to the situation as “temporary” and cites the lack of demand from the railroad industry as the root cause
From Argus Media:
The idlings will impact about 950 workers spread across the 700,000 short ton (st)/yr Riverdale high-carbon coil mill in Illinois
the 500,000st/yr Conshohocken specialty plate mill in Pennsylvania and the 300,000st/yr Steelton
Senator John Fetterman offered the following statement to ABC27 News in Harrisburg:
I was informed that Cleveland Cliffs will be idling their Steelton Rail and Conshohocken Rail Finishing facilities,” said Fetterman on Friday afternoon
“My primary concern is for the impacted workers and their families
My team and I will continue talking to affected workers and community members to understand how this temporary closure will impact union jobs and our local economy
I’ll always stand with Pennsylvania’s steelworkers – they helped build our country

More than $10 million has already been transferred to SEPTA
SEPTA used $9.75 million to purchase the 6.5-acre lot next to the regional rail station in November 2022
but at the time Conshohocken borough officials were against any new residential development near the station
“Building a garage on its own has become essentially unaffordable in our current budget situation,” Holton said
“So we agreed with the borough that we would continue to look at a surface parking lot in the event that they don’t want to do this joint development.”
That would bring a total of 225 parking spaces to the station
about 100 existing spaces plus an extra surface lot with roughly 125 spaces

Conshohocken-based Lunatrain, Inc.
announced in February that it is developing a privately owned
and maintained passenger rail service to connect major cities and destinations
The service will focus solely on sleeper trains in express
it states that “Lunatrain is designed to serve the growing number of solo travelers
and families living in major metropolitan regions that want a practical alternative to short-haul flights and driving long distances.”
The 2019 Drexel grad was previously the Head of IT at Ori Biotech and Tmunity Therapeutics

connecting cities that are too far for daytime trains to serve effectively.” The focus will be on creating a service network between cities that mainly involves trips that can be completed in a single night
The service will offer several types of sleeping cabins to accommodate various passenger types (from solo to groups) and will include the latest technology to keep travelers connected
Avena completed a feasibility analysis for the project in the first half of 2024 and has since developed robust financial projections for North American night trains
He is now working with potential customers and industry partners on the detailed design and development of Lunatrain
Lunatrain is working to launch a demonstration unit by the second half of 2026 to gather initial feedback on cabin design and use a rapid
iterative design process to reach product-market fit
Lunatain will build a fleet of stress-tested and scrutinized sleeping cars for full revenue service

At SEPTA’s Thursday board meeting
the transit agency authorized a long-term ground lease and development contract at 101 Washington St
a well-known multifamily housing developer
Leaders at the agency said they hope this would be the first of many public-private partnerships to build housing on underutilized land owned by SEPTA
A SEPTA spokesperson confirmed that the planned apartment building along the Schuylkill would be market rate
with “appropriate parking for residents” and potential space for a small commercial use such as a cafe
The proposal would still allow the transit agency to add to its parking capacity near Conshohocken station
with 119 dedicated parking spaces for riders included in the project
The general public could use them during off-peak hours
“We don’t currently have the funding to build the parking garage as we originally envisioned
but this development enables us to do parking and get transit-oriented development there as well,” said Jody Holton
SEPTA’s chief planning and strategy officer
The approval comes at the culmination of a long debate over the redevelopment of the land
which was initially slated for a mammoth new $48 million parking garage that drew the ire of transit advocates
In the face of sustained criticism of its spending priorities
SEPTA retreated from the solo-garage plan and issued a request for proposals from residential developers
The company is known for apartment buildings like Lincoln Square at Broad and Washington and the post-pandemic office-to-residential conversion of 1701 Market St
(The company declined to comment on its plans ahead of Thursday’s board meeting.)
for a total of $330 million over the lease
Holton said they were negotiating with the developer over a potential revenue-sharing because the agency is giving the ground and parking investment
but it’s investments like this that make something like this parking project actually come to fruition as we face these challenges,” said Holton
But as MoreThanTheCurve reported in 2023
Conshohocken’s borough council initially protested the abandonment of the plan — with a previous council member saying “the borough cannot sustain additional multifamily development in that area.”
the borough council had changed the zoning of the area to prevent multifamily housing from being built on the site
That means a legislative change or a zoning variance will be needed for the project to move forward
the Borough has not received a land use application for a transit-oriented development on the subject property,” said Tina Sokolowski
Sokolowski declined to comment further on Alterra’s project or the possibility of changing the zoning at 101 Washington St
some county-level politicians expressed support for the project
“We are in the middle of a housing crisis, here in Montgomery County and nationally,” said Neil Makhija
who is on SEPTA’s board and is one of the county’s three commissioners
“Transit-oriented development like this project is exactly where we should be adding new homes.”

A series of protests against the policies of President Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s DOGE were held on April 5th across the nation
where two to three hundred people lined both sides of the lower half of the 400 block of Fayette Street from 11:00 a.m
MoreThanTheCurve.com spent about 20 minutes at the protest during its first 30 minutes and didn’t see anyone participating that we recognized
We asked Conshohocken Borough Council member Anita Barton if the protesters came by bus
We are not claiming that everyone there was from outside Conshohocken
That only mattered to us because we had hoped to find some locals to photograph and interview

The worst-kept secret in Conshohocken is that Angelo’s Pizzeria in South Philadelphia
has bought or is buying the bakery property at 79 Jones Street that was home to Conshohocken Italian Bakery for 52 years
a couple of people have told us to watch the Angelo’s Instagram page because someone familiar with Conshohocken would recognize a passing shot here and there of Conshy
Angelo loves to post under Instagram Stories
and we never saw one that appeared to be in Conshohocken
An Instagram account named Angelo’s Baking Co
went live and was shared by the Angelo’s South Philly Pizzeria account
with the garage bay door opening to Jones Street
A second video the same day shows the Conshohocken skyline from the Matsonford Bridge
we were also sent a video by a reader from the Instagram account for Angelo’s South Philly Pizzeria that had Angelo’s founder
paying tribute to the Conshohocken Italian Bakery and the Gambone and Manze families
The tribute (slightly edited for clarity) is below
It’s gonna be an honor to carry on the beautiful tradition that this family did for 50 years here
I hope to be here for 50 years and garner the same kind of love and respect and admiration as the family that owned this place before me.”So
what are Angelo’s plans for Conshohocken
there is some open-source information that can help provide some insight
The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Michael Klein interviewed DiGiampietro, for an October 2nd article titled “Get the door, it’s Angelo’s: The popular South Philly pizzeria and sandwich shop has a new delivery kitchen, and there’s more on the way.”
The article shared details on Angelo’s planned expansion and partnership with Uber Eats
Angelo’s has two new ghost kitchens that focus on pizza and sandwiches
which can only be ordered through the delivery app
There was no mention in the article about Conshohocken or purchasing the bakery
We have been told a handful of similar but different stories about the plan for Conshohocken by various people
The common thread to each story is that all the bread for its expansion will be baked in Conshohocken
we have heard that they will add a ghost kitchen in Conshy
We have heard they are going to create an Italian Market-style business
The latest one is that Angelo’s will bring a handful of popular city brands for a food court-type venue
if it involves significant retail (beyond what the bakery did)
The property is located within a residential zoning district established in 2001
The Conshohocken Italian Bakery opened in 1973 and exists today as a non-conforming use within a residential area
the bakery sought and received approval to expand its retail operation by converting a residential property at the corner of Spring Mill Avenue and Jones Street (adjacent to the bakery) into a cafe
It planned to offer coffee and the baked goods it has historically sold from the bakery and have a few outdoor seats
the Gambone family never moved forward with the plan
and any associated approvals have long expired.More to come
