PHILADELPHIA — Diamondbacks right-hander Corbin Burnes will miss his next start due to right shoulder inflammation but the club is hopeful the issue will not require a stint on the injured list and that Burnes will be able to make his next scheduled start after that “I think it had probably been a start or two that he had been expressing that and feeling (fatigue in his shoulder),” Lovullo said before the second game of a three-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies here May 3 pull back if we need to and let him potentially skip a start and he should be good for the rest of the year.” Burnes did not accompany the team to Philadelphia instead returning home to undergo an MRI on May 2 “Everything pretty much checked out OK,” Lovullo said all normal stuff for the things he’s been talking about We’re glad he knows himself as well as he does we feel like we’re going to be in a really good spot.” the issue is a troubling development for a Diamondbacks team that signed Burnes to a six-year is not believed to have missed a start in his career since moving into the rotation full time during the 2020 season Burnes this season owns a 3.58 ERA in six starts He gave up one run in six innings against the Mets on Wednesday (April 30) at Citi Field Burnes had been scheduled to pitch on Monday (May 5) against the New York Mets The hope is that he will be able to pitch on May 10 vs The most likely candidate to make a start in Burnes’ absence is right-hander Ryne Nelson who threw 68 pitches in relief on Tuesday (April 29) in New York Nelson could theoretically throw upward of 80 to 85 pitches on Monday More pitching woes: Diamondbacks' Merrill Kelly exits early, 'feeling like a liability'; Phillies rally to win MLB Trade Rumors By | May 3 Piercoro adds that Arizona intends to scratch Burnes from his next start It’s unclear whether or not he’ll ultimately require a stint on the injured list due to the issue though Piecoro relays that manager Torey Lovullo told reporters before today’s game that they remain hopeful he’ll be back on the mound after just one missed start The manager suggests that Burnes has been nagged by fatigue in his shoulder going back his last couple of starts and that led to the club sending him for an MRI back in Arizona That MRI revealed “a little bit” of inflammation in Lovullo’s words leading to the decision to skip the right-hander’s next start Even as the Diamondbacks remain optimistic that Burnes will miss just one outing the news is worrying for fans in the desert Arizona has fallen to fourth place in a hyper-competitive NL West division despite their solid enough 17-15 record That record leaves them on the outside looking in for an NL Wild Card spot and Reds in the standings aside from the division-leading Dodgers has a decent enough ERA of 3.58 that clocks in 18% better than league average by ERA+ That’s not quite what the Diamondbacks had in mind when they signed him to a six-year and his peripherals tell a more alarming story His pedestrian 20.0% strikeout rate is the lowest of his career and he’s paired it with a hefty 12.1% walk rate after having reliably excellent command in recent years and suggest that even his mid-rotation production to this point in the year isn’t sustainable Perhaps this inflammation that he’s been battling is at least part of the explanation for the righty’s struggles The 30-year-old hurler has made at least 32 starts in each of the past three seasons and while that durability is admirable it’s the nature of pitching in this current era of baseball that hurlers need more rest than ever before as they push themselves for higher velocity and maximum spin efficiency Perhaps this breather will be enough to calm the inflammation and get Burnes back on track which would surely be a relief for Arizona as they fight to force their way back into the NL playoff picture after their surprising World Series run in 2023 and narrowly missing out on October last year Arizona Diamondbacks He was regressing before he joined the diamondbacks I wonder if even in SSSs there’s a correlation between guys with good control and K::BB rates whose control goes blooey OTOH he had a similar BB rate in 6 starts fr May 5–June 2 Though OTOOH Burnes was still K’ing more than 9 per 9 that year And if he weren’t he would have gotten even more money He got as much as he did because he is still very valuable and “only” got 6 years There are only ever a small amount of very good pitchers to sign so you have to overpay Aaron Nola got 170m after a 4.46 era season It’s because of consistency of nearly 200IP partially But here we see the constant risk with any pitcher Reminder that regression is a statistical concept Ranger Suarez regressed after his hot first half (Not a perfect example since injury played a role) Walker Buehler has declined over the last few years all the Orioles fans that use him as the poster child for their armchair GMing are eeriely quiet on this thread “the reason the O’s are sucking eggs this year is bc they were “too cheap” to pony up for Burnes.” but they’re scared to blame the young bats for being limp so BAL fans like to just go to the starters last night with Sugano was a great example that they’re starters can be economical on their pitch count not tax the pen and still… bring shut out is totally not on the starter it’s also muscle memory to say the Orioles’s owner is cheap that worthless guy is gone and back to Nashville I said at the time that it was alarming how few Oriole fans knew his stats and I generally am pretty patient when people are hurting that doesn’t mean being blind to the faults but NOR does it mean that you trash you own club and throw around smug esp when it includes calling a player a “bum” I’m a Os fan of more than 60 years and am more than willing to say that the fan base The social media channels (blogs and Reddit) are so toxic that anyone even slightly prone to statistical or fact based arguments just gives up Probably has something to do with being on the Orioles last year!🤣 Helen Keller would have known something was wrong If this turns out to be a Greinke 2.0 signing then I am quite happy Gave up 3 more runs a game after signing with you Well yeah when he was coming off of a year where he had a 1 ERA you sure can make it sound negative that he “gave up 4 more runs a game” but the next 2 it was a 3 and the 4th it was was 2 for the 25 starts he made that year If you don’t think that 4 years of a 3.30 ERA 17 WAR (right there with the WAR he provided with the Dodgers) you might not have a clue what you are talking about with baseball It is a Madison Bumgarner 2.0 signing that the Diamondbacks want to avoid Greinkie had a 131 ERA+ and regularly tossed 200 innings a season with the D-Backs See the Orioles likely just avoided an albatross contract And hey at least Trevor Rogers only cost them two prospects (suspects) and no onerous contracts One of the “suspects” is Top 10 in MLB in RBI and OPS The other was the Marlins 2024 MVP after the trade He’s going to need a heck of a season to justify the trade And that’s why I said that Elias made a uniquely odd decision to trade for “possible” short term benefits and should never do it again Generating ad hominum social media attacks from Os fans The loudest voices on Os social media are uniquely toxic I wouldn’t be too optimistic about Tommy Henry That career ERA in MLB of 5.11 is entirely deserved he hasn’t been even that good in AAA for his career The ‘backs would appear to be in some trouble Ryne Nelson was their best starter in the second half of last season Arizona is one of the few teams that has enough starting pitching depth to weather a few injuries like this Ryne would have made the opening day rotation on pretty much every other MLB team Shoulder inflammation is the flavor of the week for pitcher injuries… The problem with the type of shoulder injuries you get from throwing is they don’t usually show up on MRIs very well So you have someone like Reynaldo Lopez going on the IL multiple times before he actually has surgery So the diagnosis always leaves room for uncertainty Ryan Nelson was one of the best SPs in MLB the back half of ’24 so he may surprise some people All were starting pitchers for the Orioles during the spring in 2024 “quite a coincidence..injured in some way”…First people blame the Rays for pitching injuries it’s the Dodgers who are ruining pitchers When will people learn that pitching is a risky proposition and that injury is virtually guaranteed in that occupation There is a reason that virtually all baseball teams are seeking “depth” practically all 7 days of the week throughout the season The Dodgers played the Orioles 3 times in August 2024 Obviously they caught the injury bug from the O’s Dodgers Braves now rumored to be starting at 10:15 ET Only if he knew how to throw a football slider. Don’t say his name 3 times or he might appear and desecrate the thread Posey may have made a smart move not pursuing Burnes & potential long term contract Yeah but then you have to face the fact of Willy Adames needs to improve the numbers but what he has brought outside of that has been phenomenal Very happy with the smarts in the Adames move Well Adames is below replacement level -.6 WAR with diminished fielding metrics from last season which in itself was a big cratering from his 2023 numbers The poor numbers make the attitude and vibe he has bought more noteworthy It’s been barely more than a month of baseball You can’t start judging a dude by his numbers They’re ~20% of the way through the season and he’s been awful well it’s also a coincidence that they’re all pitchers I think we should investigate the Orioles’ pitching coaches for their negative impact on the Dodgers and Yankees too but his K/9 has dropped from 13.3 to 12.6 to 10.8 to 9.3 to 8.4 You seldom see pitchers with 4 consecutive drops in the K-rate the bigger concern about the DBacks is the number and type of early season injuries The team needs to investigate this trend and respond with some appropriate changes They still have not missed a start out of their rotation and that’s generally the biggest injury concern Steve Stone used to say tendinitis and inflammation is a nice way of saying you will need surgery eventually Log in Register MLB Trade Rumors is not affiliated with Major League Baseball Register Burnes likely to miss next start due to right shoulder inflammationMay 4th PHILADELPHIA -- It seems likely, but not certain yet, that Diamondbacks right-hander will miss his scheduled start Monday when Arizona returns home to play the Mets due to right shoulder inflammation Burnes, who signed a six-year, $210 million contract in the offseason is not with the team in Philadelphia after returning to Phoenix following Thursday’s game against the Mets in New York The shoulder issue had been bothering Burnes for a few starts but the veteran wanted to pitch through it After his start against the Mets on Wednesday the team decided it was best to send him back to Phoenix to have an MRI taken “Just some right shoulder inflammation,” Lovullo said of the MRI results “Just very normal for what pitchers go through at this point in time Corbin has been dealing with this for a couple starts just a true professional and he wanted the baseball.” Lovullo indicated there were a number of options with the one that seems most likely being that Burnes misses his start Monday and then starts when his turn comes back through the rotation “We’ll probably know in the next 24 hours,” Lovullo said the logical candidate to replace him is Ryne Nelson who is currently pitching out of the bullpen but remains stretched out since competing for a rotation spot in Spring Training Nelson last pitched April 29 when he worked four innings and threw 68 pitches Scott White ranks the two-start pitchers for the upcoming scoring period and then categorizes them by how usable they are The names depicted here are highly speculative and subject to change One of the most common ways they change is with the addition of a spot starter when a team is scheduled to play six games in a row but it happens often enough that I'm taking the extra step this year of pointing out which of the two-start pitchers is scheduled for Tuesday and Sunday in the upcoming scoring period since they're the most likely to lose out in such a scenario All information is up to date as of Sunday afternoon and more below to make your Corbin Carroll player prop bets Carroll is hitting .279 with eight doubles Carroll ranks sixth in home runs and 19th in RBI Watch tonight's Diamondbacks game on Fubo! around the bases in 11.02 seconds from home to third set the mark for quickest in the big leagues thus far in 2025 ripping a ball to his pull side in the seventh and turning on the afterburners to make it to third in 10.87 seconds Since Statcast began tracking home-to-third times in 2015 Carroll became the first player to have two sub-11.05-second times in a single contest The previous top mark this season was Minnesota’s Byron Buxton who went home-to-third in 11.19 seconds on a triple Friday night Carroll is responsible for nine of the 20-fastest such times across the Majors So what goes into running the bases faster than literally anyone else in the league “I’ll just say that between first and second [base] there is like a decision point on most of those,” Carroll said “[The outfielder’s arm] is definitely a factor that's important there But I think the most important one is probably where the ball is … Our coaches do a really good job with that we've got a good idea of how the outfielders' arms play who also holds the top three home-to-second times in the Majors this year recorded a pair of triples in a game for the first time in his pro career But before his wheels could captivate the 33,544 fans in attendance The D-backs were in a pickle from the word go Sunday with each of the first two Atlanta batters getting into scoring position against starter Brandon have three instances in his career of recording an outfield assist and a triple in the same inning His 21 extra-base hits (and four triples) lead the Majors while his three right-field assists are ARLINGTON -- It’s probably the biggest reason he’s in Texas right now he made 32 starts for the Nationals in 2024 The 35-year-old southpaw led Washington in games started (170) innings pitched (946 2/3) and strikeouts (832) over his six-year tenure with the club (2019-24) ranking third in MLB in starts during that span But it works out even better when he’s able to keep the scoring low as well On Wednesday night, he did just that. Corbin allowed one run in 5 1/3 innings against the Angels at Globe Life Field, helping the Rangers to a 3-1 win over their American League West foe “It was just a great job of pitching,” said Rangers manager Bruce Bochy He just did a good job of keeping him off balance He kept them honest there by using the fastball in and he got some strikeouts by freezing them there with the changeup and the slower breaking ball This was just Corbin’s second start of the season He did not pitch in any Cactus League contests after signing with the Rangers during the final week of Spring Training when the injuries of Jon Gray and Cody Bradford opened up the need for starting pitching depth though one was erased quickly by a double play That was the first time he’s faced 16 or fewer batters through five innings since April 17 Though he got into a bit of trouble in the sixth after a string of one-out hits from Kevin Newman reliever Shawn Armstrong slammed the door shut to keep the scoring where it was “I know of Corbin,” Angels manager Ron Washington said of the former Washington National “We faced him for eight straight years when I was in Atlanta The thing about him is he stays in the ballgame Corbin collected six strikeouts to just one walk as he built up to 85 pitches This came after not striking out any of his 19 batters faced in his last outing on April 8 at Wrigley Field Corbin said the volume of strikeouts on Wednesday was a combination of pitch usage and just getting acclimated to facing big league hitters again after not going through Spring Training and that was something that we talked about,” Corbin explained it was good to get that one out of the way in Chicago and be able to come here and get better Part of that improvement will hopefully come just by getting more and more work with the Rangers' catchers and pitching coaches said the first time he had even caught Corbin at all was in the pregame bullpen at Wrigley that communication and work together should only get better “I was kind of learning on the fly,” Heim said of Corbin’s first start and had a lot of conversations before today's game I feel like we were on the same page for all the games He was making quality pitches and not leaving a lot over the plate for them to hit.” Why Carroll's early season power surge looks legitApril 13th With his 5-foot-10, 165-pound frame, nobody is ever going to confuse for or the D-backs speedster is slugging like one of the big boys Carroll had homered five times in 14 games to start 2025 And it’s not just a matter of jumping on a few early mistakes -- he has been blistering the ball all over the field That’s a who’s who of some of the game’s most feared sluggers -- and Carroll is right in the middle of it The other players alongside Carroll in the top five have combined for nine 40-homer seasons Nobody projected this kind of pop when Carroll was climbing the prospect ranks, ultimately peaking at No. 2 overall on MLB Pipeline's list prior to 2023 that seemed doable for a player whose power received an above-average grade before he debuted hitting 25 home runs during his National League Rookie of the Year Award-winning season in 2023 But players his size aren’t supposed to challenge the 40-homer mark Here’s why Carroll’s power surge seems like the real deal Carroll’s performance this year is a stark contrast to how he began 2024 his power disappeared for months at a time He didn't hit his second homer of the season until May 7 But last July, he began homering at a prolific clip and basically hasn’t stopped. Dating back to July 7, 2024, Carroll has gone deep 25 times Carroll has done that in 85 games -- which roughly extrapolates to a 47-homer pace over the course of a full season And Carroll is swinging much faster than he did the past two years (Bat-tracking data is available starting in the second half of 2023.) Granted, Carroll’s bat speed prior to 2025 was nothing to sneeze at. His average swing was north of 73 mph in both 2023 (73.2 mph) and 2024 (73.7 mph) But he’s gone to another echelon this year bumping his average bat speed up to 75.2 mph which puts him in the top eight percent of MLB hitters That’s a particularly notable figure given that Statcast defines a “fast” swing as anything 75 mph or above Exactly half of Carroll’s swings this season have met that threshold Carroll has sacrificed some contact to achieve that result -- his whiff rate has spiked to 28% after sitting at 21% across 2023-24 -- but he’s more than made up for it … the ball is jumping off his bat like never before Carroll’s average exit velocity, hard-hit rate and barrel rate have skyrocketed, with the outfielder ranking in the 93rd percentile or better in all three categories While those metrics can be quite noisy in small sample sizes it’s easier to buy into the improvement knowing that his surge began last year Carroll’s batted-ball breakdown since 2023Average exit velocity // hard-hit rate // barrel rate The fact that Carroll has generated multiple batted balls with exit velocities north of 115 mph an area to which most hitters rarely -- if ever -- venture Carroll’s 115.7 mph lineout on March 28 exceeded his previous career high by nearly 2 mph He topped that with a 115.8 mph triple on April 6 Carroll also hit the two hardest home runs of his career (111.8 mph and 110.7 mph) on April 4, both off the Nationals’ Hardest-hit batted balls of Carroll’s career: Max exit velocity can be incredibly telling revealing a lot about a player’s raw power in a single batted ball If a hitter is suddenly pushing their max exit velocity to new heights it’s usually an example of real physical improvement -- because that kind of jump doesn’t happen by accident It’s not just how Carroll is hitting the ball that’s making a difference Carroll has embraced a similar approach. In 2023-24, the outfielder’s rate of pulled air contact (fly balls, line drives and popups) sat around 16%. This year, it’s up to 24.4%, as you can see on Baseball Savant's new batted ball profile leaderboard it’s another tweak that has carried over from the second half of last season when his pulled airball rate soared to 23.9% -- up from 11.8% prior to the All-Star break Carroll hasn’t lost his ability to fly on the bases -- he’s still one of the fastest players in the game Written by RotoWire Staff Carroll went 2-for-6 with three RBI and a run scored in Sunday's 11-9 extra-inning win over Philadelphia Carroll helped fuel early offense with a two-run single in the second inning and run-scoring single an inning later The RBI were the first in nine games for Carroll no need for 'Answer-backs'April 16th MIAMI -- The “Answer-backs” didn’t need to do any answering Tuesday night at loanDepot park. In fact, it was Arizona which was making house calls all night, phoning home three times on homers in its 10-4 win over Miami And none was bigger than 's second-deck grand slam to right-center field in the sixth inning “[Marlins pitcher George Soriano] snuck a changeup in there and [then] threw a fastball and I was able to catch up to it,” Carroll reflected on the at-bat The big fly was Carroll’s sixth of the season tying him for second among big league hitters He joined Aaron Judge as the only players to hit a grand slam in each of the 2023 The D-backs mirrored Carroll’s fiery start to the season in Tuesday’s game scoring five of their 10 runs in the game’s first three innings The early onslaught was something that manager Torey Lovullo hoped for pregame and then the challenges of balancing out and the celebration afterwards it’s always awesome to win a game -- doesn’t matter how you do it -- but I think if we go out and pace ourselves and do the things that we are trained to do dominating wire to wire in what was an emphatic offensive showing And Carroll -- as he’s done all season -- made the team’s biggest statement at the plate Josh Naylor kicked off Arizona’s scorching night after playing the hero Sunday opening his Miami series with a single to right The D-backs were unable to plate a run in the first but things changed drastically in the second The squad had men on first and third when Carroll drove in the game’s first run with a double extending his on-base streak to 17 games (the longest to start a season in D-backs history) who leads all MLB shortstops in on-base percentage (.431) kept his momentum going with a three-run big fly in the second Arizona’s lefty hitters were fond of the right-field wall Tuesday and Naylor joined the party in the third with a 373-foot jack on a low-middle changeup highlighted by a resounding 434-foot blast from Carroll Carroll’s power thoroughly impressed his manager “The impact of the ball when it left the bat I was very impressed,” Lovullo reflected on the homer you could tell that that ball was struck very well.” He’s piece-by-piece eliminating swings-and-misses in parts of the zone He’s locked in … and the hard work is paying off.” Carroll attributes his early success to a productive offseason “[I put in] a lot of good work this offseason” he said postgame “Staying consistent … and just moving a little better always looking to learn about myself and I think those things for the most part are paying off.” The hard work has Carroll on an MVP-esque tear to start the season he ranks second in slugging percentage and fourth in OPS (1.158) and he's tied for fourth in doubles (seven) and for sixth in hits (23) Carroll was dominant in a rookie campaign that culminated in Arizona’s first World Series appearance since 2001 and resulted in him winning the NL Rookie of the Year Award seeing his batting average drop over 54 points and stealing 19 fewer bases than he did in 2023 he’s put together arguably his best stretch of baseball since becoming a pro “I’m always glad he’s on our team,” said Merrill Kelly who struck out nine and gave up just one run over six innings in his third win of the season “… He may be even better [than he was in 2023] … Obviously he’s a special talent as it is so the more reps he gets and the more comfortable he gets and then in intermittent bursts that suggest a true disregard for self-promotion and self-mythologizing—the temptation is to receive his songs as a series of experiments tips of an iceberg that will languish in a Google Drive folder until it melts seems to threaten that this release might disappear into the digital morass But the LP is a project of striking ambition It aims to marry optimistic melodies with writing that probes uncomfortably deep into questions of morality and feelings of existential exhaustion—and almost always succeeds refusing to sacrifice its depth for a cleaner shape or its hooks for the sake of mood The first line on Crisis Kid is: “God’s in a cage, snake in a circle.” A literal tension between human and hell recurs throughout the album, but so does this idea of the fight as a circular one. Surprisingly, given the morose imagery Corbin tends toward—but fitting given the album’s often sunny melodies—a sense of perpetual struggle apparently brings him peace, or at least catharsis. “It’s all going to burn off anyway,” he sings at the end of that verse. He’s talking about skin. All products featured on Pitchfork are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission. Right-hander Kevin Ginkel then entered for his first appearance of 2025, after spending the first portion of the season on the Injured List. Ginkel walked Alonso, but struck out Vientos swinging to the end the inning with his trademark yell as he walked off the mound. He pitched for just one out, but will see plenty more outings as the season progresses. Shelby Miller took over in the eighth, and retired the first hitter he faced easily. But the righty couldn't quite find his grip on a weak grounder back to him quick enough, and Jeff McNeil beat out the throw to first. Miller managed to work around that baserunner for a scoreless inning. The D-backs then tacked on a pair of of insurance runs in the ninth. Gabriel Moreno walked, and Gurriel doubled, finishing 2-for-4 on the night with the double and a run scored. Barrosa then plated Moreno with a sac fly to center. With Alek Thomas pinch-running for Gurriel, Perdomo managed a shallow sac fly of his own to make it 4-1. But then came a troublesome home half. Justin Martinez entered, after locking down a shaky save his last time out. The flamethrower's velocity was down significantly the last time he pitched, but he maintained that there was nothing wrong. But in Wednesday's game, the righty still didn't have it. Once again sporting velocity nearly 4 MPH less than his usual triple-digits, Martinez gave up a solo home run to Taylor on a center-cut fastball. He then walked Lindor and Soto. With no outs and Martinez spraying his pitches, Lovullo turned to Ryan Thompson, who hit his first batter with a sinker inside. He collected two outs but allowed New York's third run to score on a groundout. With the bases loaded, he forced a grounder to third, locking down a tough save when Arizona needed it dearly. "This is what we live for, right?" Thompson told Dbacks.TV's Jody Jackson postgame. "Coming in these big spots and we're always ready for it. Unfortunate with Justin, seeing his velo the way it was..." Thompson said he got ready quickly after seeing Martinez's fastball immediately clock in at around 96 MPH. It was Thompson's first save of the season. "This has never happened before since I've been here for him out there. So, it's an honor to come in and have his back," Thompson said. "It's kind of crazy," Perdomo later told Jackson. "[Martinez] doesn't feel any pain or anything like that. He'll get back to his normal velocity. We worry about him, but thank God he doesn't feel any pain... But he's going to come back to his normal velocity soon." Jackson reported the latest from Lovullo on Martinez's status: Torey Lovullo said Justin Martinez says he feels great but with the velocity down Lovullo said that imaging and/or an IL stint are possible. They are still evaluating him and he can’t rule it out. Regardless, Arizona will go into the rubber match at 16-14, and pick up a much-needed win on the road. "To get back on track is amazing. It was a great team effort right there," Perdomo said. The Diamondbacks will have a shot at the series in a Thursday morning game, with first pitch scheduled for 10:10 a.m. Arizona time. Become one. “That was kind one of the things that we were scratching our head at where they kind of got the years from,” Burnes said “Not to say they wouldn’t have jumped up at the end if things got a little more serious But just kind of even going back and forth a couple times with them Burnes added that the Orioles “maybe” would have stretched their offer to five years to get the deal done “but we were kind of scratching our head for that one.” Burnes said the issue wasn’t with the dollar amount “I just don’t think we necessarily matched up in the years it was going to take to kind of get to a dollar amount to stay there,” Burnes said I can’t guarantee I would’ve gone there [Baltimore] had this offer not come around these guys were going to be serious and have a fair offer But this was by far the best offer that we had.” whose son recently turned 3 and his twin daughters are almost a year old said the opportunity to be home more frequently was a strong incentive while pitching to a 2.92 ERA and earned Cy Young votes Burnes occasionally flew to Arizona to spend time with his family when it wasn’t his day to pitch “Just the magnitude of time I get to be around them be someone who helps my wife raise my daughters and my son a little bit more than years past is for me — I can’t take that for granted," Burnes said ‘What are you doing waking up at 6:30?’ I get to wake up and see my kids and change a diaper and play with them for six hours and then come to the field and do it all over again every day that was something I definitely missed last year The Orioles were a player in the chase for Burnes up until the end The 30-year-old said agent “Scott [Boras] was still in negotiations with them up until a couple days prior of us signing here.” The deal with Arizona came together within 72 hours Burnes said he’ll look back fondly on his lone season in Baltimore. The Orioles gave up a strong trade package to acquire him ahead of the 2024 season knowing that their starting unit was a weakness that someone like the former NL Cy Young winner could help solve. And for the rotation to crumble around Burnes all year and for him to stay steady, the fact that Baltimore didn't prioritize getting something done with their ace says a lot about what took place in free agency. The other strange part about this is the Orioles offered Burnes a record-setting deal when it come to the amount of money paid per season. Why they weren't willing to go beyond the four-year mark isn't known, but the fact it cost them a high-end starting pitcher when they already had question marks in that unit is head-scratching. "Burnes was open to staying in Baltimore, too, but waited nearly a month before the Orioles even made an offer," Nightengale added in his story. It would be interesting to hear Mike Elias' side to get a better understanding of what happened here, but based on what Burnes has shared, how things were handled by the front office was about as poor as things could have been handled based on the importance of the ace to this team. Roosevelt gave a radio address to 125 million Americans in which he coined the term “first 100 days.” Today the 100th day of a presidency is considered as a benchmark to measure the early success or failure of a president Donald Trump’s 100th day of office was April 30 and the world has witnessed his 139 executive orders a few cabinet meetings and numerous press briefings tariff-related flip-flopping and arbitrary capricious and erratic actions have created 1929-like turmoil in the stock market utter confusion among our 184 international trade partners and confounded unrest with consumers a UMass/YouGov poll found 26% of the people who voted for Trump have lost their confidence and appeal for our 47th president (April 17) It appears The New York Times was the first media agency to report on just the 18th day of Trump’s 2.0 presidency that he was creating a constitutional crisis That claim has been reported by multiple major news agencies spoken in town-hall meetings and observed in thousands of public protests with demonstrators from all political persuasions requesting Congress and the Supreme Court to stop turning our democracy into an authoritarian dictatorship I sent an e-mail to authoritarian scholar Barbara McQuade She is a professor at University of Michigan Law School; U.S 2010-2017; and author of “Attack From Within: How Disinformation is Sabotaging America I asked her expert opinion on what citizens would most likely witness when a constitutional crisis has occurred and recommend action citizens should take McQuade replied to my inquiry: “1) If a president were to deliberately violate a court order I think we could consider that a constitutional crisis 2) Citizens can do many things to push back against abuse of power write to their member of Congress or participate in a protest but I think the most effective thing a citizen can do is to talk to their friends and neighbors to explain their concerns and rally support.” Republican who served as the speechwriter for three GOP administrations (Ronald Reagan Bush) and senior fellow at Trinity Forum -- an American faith-based non-profit Christian organization -- feels Trump has created not one Wehner stated in an April 19-20 Wall Street Journal article “It seems as if we are moving at a rapid speed toward a genuine constitutional crisis a genuine separation-of-powers crisis and a genuine checks-and-balances crisis.” You can decide if any of the following actions and published repercussions put America in a precarious dilemma: Trump has openly defied federal court directives refusing to halt deportation flights to El Salvador and return an illegally deported Maryland man Trump has eliminated and/or dismantled federal agencies -- like USAID -- by executive order Trump has claimed the right to withhold or redirect federal funds appropriated by law undermining Congress’s constitutional power of the purse Trump has fired civil service-protected employees Trump is attempting to end birthright citizenship by executive action a constitutional right under the 14th Amendment Trump has withheld funds from universities without legal justification Trump has revoked visas solely because of the holders’ expressed viewpoints questioning their legitimacy and authority which erodes the independence of the judiciary Trump created the Department of Governmental Efficiency without congressional approval Trump has set tariffs on our trading partners as opposed to Article 1 Constitution that grants Congress the explicit power to “lay and collect Taxes Imposts and Excises” and to “regulate Commerce with foreign Nations.” Polling by the revered and non-political Reuters/Ispos found 83% of Americans feel “Trump must obey federal court rulings even if he doesn’t want to” (April 20) “voters want to keep constitutional guardrails in place that constrain a president’s power” (April 4) as of April 26 there have been 211 legal challenges to Trump administration actions (Just Security – New York University School of Law) a probable Trump-related contempt of court opinion was issued by U.S If you are concerned about Trump’s endeavors consider the advice offered by law professor McQuade: participate in peaceful rallies support political candidates committed to upholding constitutional democracy communicate with your two registers everything with keen sensitivity As he opens up about his faith and his struggles with addiction he looks directly at me with gentle eyes. It’s been 11 years since Corbin broke through as the melancholic lothario Spooky Black depicted the then 15-year-old wearing a black durag and turtle neck with a thick chain trudging through a snowy forest in his native Minnesota wearing the same ensemble but in all white The video quickly surpassed a million views and it secured a prominent place in the canon of niche internet ephemera It’s now sitting on 13 million YouTube views.“I try not to think about my music from the past,” Corbin says now rocking a choir boy haircut and stubble Without You was a paragon of the early SoundCloud era an exciting time when teenagers from niche corners of the internet had begun to bypass traditional industry gatekeepers reaching millions of listeners without compromising their sound or style with elements of genres being more commonly adopted outside of their traditional context As people raised eyebrows to Yung Lean emerging from Sweden with an Atlanta-inspired rap sound Corbin’s success stirred debate about the distinction between homage and appropriation when white artists experiment with R&B Corbin admits he had a “troll-like mindset” when he dropped Without You “[I wanted to create] a funny juxtaposition: a dumb video with really sad content,” he explains dropping the Spooky Black moniker just a few months after Without You was released in 2014 From his breakthrough EP Leaving that year to the apocalyptic love story of his 2017 debut album Mourn through to 2021’s emotionally tumultuous Ghost With Skin Corbin’s music spoke to a deep sense of generational despair “I feel myself returning to my shell a bit I’m trying to force myself not to go all the way back in” When Kylie Jenner misquoted a Without You lyric in an Instagram caption in 2014 Corbin tweeted: “i don’t give a fuck about your fame” and “you’re worthless like the rest of us” He claims his only regret about his breakthrough era is that he didn’t try to collaborate with late emo rap stars Lil Peep and Juice WRLD there was little musical output from Corbin he released Without You on major streaming services for the first time largely as a warm up for his new album Crisis Kid “I want to promote this thing instead of just dropping and disappearing Crisis Kid is largely a product of Corbin’s sobriety its dour and brooding melodies reminiscent of New Order and Drab Majesty He makes a focused attempt to unblur his words Although it lets in a newfound sense of light doesn’t map onto a neat redemption arc it won’t heal every scar /But it’s a start,” he sings on the jangly new wave song Come Down he reveals that he’s “tired of fetishising pain.” “I naturally write about sadness,” Corbin says “I know people can relate to sadness – that’s why my older music resonated They’ve stood by me through sobriety and the whole 12 years of me doing this music thing” a decision prompted by a pair of soiled khakis at an airport ‘Let me just get a couple more drinks in,’” he remembers Went to use the restroom before getting on internet popularity He began retreating from the world further and drinking harder when he was hacked around a year later “Some guy said to shout him out or else he’d take all my stuff,” he recalls the next day the hacker broke into all of his social media accounts and forwarded all of Corbin’s outgoing calls and messages to himself “That kid definitely beat down any sense of morale I had as far as online presence goes I really hit it hard between then and [the age of] 23,” Corbin says and generally terrorised my friends.” He turned to substances “so I could become a synthetic version of Universalist Church a pluralist religion that covers a broad range of ideas and doctrines at fifteen he was instructed to write a credo “nothing” is less a passive stance for Corbin and more a belief system in its own right “I don’t think we’re supposed to have a finger on the unknown; we’re only given tiny glimpses,” he says He found a Unitarian Universalist Church here in Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago He goes simply for the practice of being among strangers “I do wish there were more resources for secular sober people,” he says while living in a windowless guest suite at The W Hotel in Beverly Hills He felt abdominal pains from the high enzyme levels in his liver his digestion was messed up and his ankles were swollen There was no part of him that could go on drinking “I had to take a look at the world for the first time since I became an adult to actually look at it and not cower away in fear.” He began writing Crisis Kid shortly after the relapse spinach and berries and for the past four years “I’ve relapsed on cheese a couple of times,” he admits Eating a cheese pizza is better than drinking liquor.” Later this month Corbin hits the road for his Clown on Stage tour The North American dates sold out in seconds and now rehearsals are at the forefront of his mind “I feel myself returning to my shell a bit,” he admits “I’m trying to force myself not to go all the D-backs’ game on Sunday afternoon against the Rangers after the third inning due to lower back tightness but the outfielder does not believe the injury is anything serious and it was kind of just tight,” Carroll said “It didn’t really get worse or anything as the game went on but I just think the trainer kind of saw I was just grinding through and he’s like “Let’s just get you out of there.’ But pretty much minimal concern As he replayed his day in his head while getting treatment Carroll said one issue could have been that he lifted before the game instead of afterward and the back could plugging a durable veteran into their injury-addled starting rotation Corbin, who'll enter his 13th major league season, struggled through most of his six-year, $140 million contract with the Washington Nationals but he's a two-time All-Star who is the only pitcher in baseball who made 31 or more starts in every full season since 2017 The Rangers placed right-hander Jon Gray on the 60-day injured list to make room on the 40-man roster for Corbin. Gray broke his right wrist when he was hit by a line drive in a spring training game on Friday. Left-hander Cody Bradford who was shut down from throwing last week when he developed soreness in his elbow Corbin, who has logged the third-most innings in Major League Baseball since he broke in with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2012 somebody who's going to fit in our clubhouse well and gives us added protection," president of baseball operations Chris Young told reporters "We also believe that there's some things we saw in the second half of last year with his performance that indicate he can continue that and be a very serviceable major league starting pitcher Corbin had a solid debut season with the Nationals in 2019 when he matched his career high of 14 wins posted a 3.25 ERA in 33 starts and was the winning pitcher in Game 7 of the World Series But he went 33-70 with a 5.62 ERA over the next five years after the pandemic shortened the 2020 season The 35-year-old allowed the most hits (208) and earned runs (109) in the major leagues in 2024 but he was second on the 91-loss Nationals with 174⅔ innings Corbin is 103-131 with a 4.51 ERA and 1,729 strikeouts in 1,892⅓ innings.
