Five people were injured Thursday afternoon in a violent car crash in Country Club Hills
County Club Hills police were called for the rollover crash on Cicero Avenue at 184th Street
Police said a Dodge Coup was headed north on Cicero Avenue when it struck a Toyota minivan crossing the intersection
Two occupants of the minivan were rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with life-threatening injuries

Kevin and Alyssa Wheeler lived in Washington
for many years—first in Mount Vernon Triangle and then in Southwest—but
they yearned for a single-family home where they could start a family
“We zeroed in on a couple of potential neighborhoods
but ultimately settled on Country Club Hills,” says Kevin
(Alyssa is also a lawyer.) “A large part of it was because of the location and how accessible it is.”
diverse mix of architectural styles and easy commute into D.C
Bonus: The elevated property they ended up buying in 2020 offered views of the National Cathedral and beyond
although the existing house on the lot wasn’t taking advantage of that asset
Razing it and starting from scratch made sense
To build the five-bedroom house of their dreams, the Wheelers selected GTM Architects in Bethesda and Arlington contractor Ventura Group
“We were aware of GTM because we had seen them around,” Kevin says
“but we have a close mutual friend who introduced us to [principal] Mark Kaufman.”
The couple’s brief to Kaufman was relatively simple
They wanted “a traditional home that had updated styling” and pointed to a GTM-designed home they liked in Chevy Chase as a starting point
but it definitely provided some inspiration for our house,” Kevin says
Raising and Educating Our Children During Uncertain Times
Kaufman’s first—and perhaps most important—decision was where to position the 7,000-square-foot residence on the lot
with a 14-foot slope running from south to north
The Wheelers had a strong preference for a sunny
“We had to reorient and rethink how the lot was being utilized,” Kaufman says
“meaning if there’s a big sloping lot from left to right … it’s now gonna be from the front of the house to the back of the house.”
Rotating the new home’s orientation opened up a number of design opportunities
It allowed the architects to tuck a garage into the lower level
and maximize the views from the upper floors
they’re able to drive under the house into the basement level for the garage
so we’re not sacrificing any first floor living space for a two-car garage,” Kaufman says
“And because we have a full walk-out on the north side of the house
and connects to a covered patio with access to the pool
The main level is essentially a modified open plan
A foyer flanked by a dining room on one side and a living room (“which we call the ‘piano room’ because that’s what we use it for,” Alyssa says) on the other leads to the kitchen in back
The uppermost level features three generously sized bedrooms
plus an owner’s suite with a large deck that captures views of the D.C
High ceilings (10 feet on the main level and 9 feet in the bedrooms) make the spaces feel grand. A collaboration with Bethesda-based interior designer Erica Burns produced an aesthetic that can be described as “pared back traditional,” with beefy trim work
They start about 9 inches above the floor and go all the way up,” Kaufman says
you really want to have a lot of connection to the outside and a lot of daylight.”
The kitchen exudes French country vibes with white-painted perimeter cabinets topped with quartz countertops
and an island with the same door style but rendered in oak
A blue French range strikes a dashing pose and is complemented by a large
the same plaster technique was used on the fireplace in the adjacent family room
the house fits in nicely among the neighboring Tudors
The whitewashed brick was a client request
Additional cladding in fiber cement and composite slate contribute to a low maintenance exterior
“A lot of the material you see on the house is consistent within the neighborhood,” says the architect
“We might have used it in a slightly different manner or had some different architectural elements.” But the palette speaks the same language
As in so many successful custom homes, landscaping completes the look. A plan by D.C. landscape architect Joseph Richardson uses retaining walls to create terraces
shrubs and flowering plants for privacy and aesthetics
Having lived in their new home for two years now—during which they welcomed a baby boy—the Wheelers say it’s everything they hoped it would be
“The benefit of building a custom home is that we were able to design it with our life in mind,” Alyssa says
“The spaces feel like they all have their purpose

(First Alert 4) - Murder and assault charges have been filed against a St
Louis man accused in a double shooting earlier in December in Country Club Hills
Louis County prosecutors charged 21-year-old Elijah Graham on Thursday with first-degree murder in the death of Michael Gist
Graham is also charged with first-degree assault in the shooting of a second victim and charged with firearm crimes in the incident
Louis County Jail without the possibility of bail
An initial court appearance has not been set
According to a probable cause statement filed by St. Louis County Police, officers arrived on Dec. 5 at the crime scene in the 7400 block of West Florissant and found a Gist shot and the second victim shot in the hand
An investigation showed the shooting happened following a car crash
After the crash police say Graham fired a shot out of the passenger window of the vehicle he was in
Graham is then accused of pulling in front of the victim’s vehicle
Police found the vehicle Graham was riding in the next day at the South County mall
Investigators lifted a fingerprint from the vehicle trunk
Graham initially denied any involvement in the shootings
He later requested to speak to police and told them he shot at the vehicle but someone inside fired at him first
video and other evidence from the shooting showed he fired first

Country Club Hills Fire Department Local 2720/Facebook
— Country Club Hills will no longer require that two paramedics respond to emergency medical services calls
prompting pushback from the firefighters union
The Country Club Hills Fire Department Local 2720
said it was notified of the change to require only one paramedic along with an emergency medical technician basic with less training and experience
“Local 2720 strongly disagrees with these extreme changes in services being provided to the residents,” the post stated
The union did not respond to requests for comment beyond their post
The union said the city also now counts EMT basics toward minimum staffing levels
allowing it to cut its daily staffing from six people per day to four
Mayor James Ford said by staffing ambulances with one EMT basic and one paramedic
the city still complies with requirements set by the Illinois Department of Public Health and follows the same minimum staffing levels as neighboring municipalities
The changes follow concerns from the Frankfort fire union about staffing in its village, going so far as posting on social media to notify the public when fire stations were left unmanned as a matter of safety
“Everyone knows the south suburbs are struggling because of the high taxes,” Ford said Thursday
“So we have to make adjustments to make sure we continue to stay in business.”
Ford said he has not heard of any reductions in the quality of service provided on the two ambulances that serve the city of about 17,000 people
He also criticized the firefighters union for airing out its concerns on social media
as they are working with the city to negotiate a new contract
“For them to go to the news media or social media — it’s totally unheard of,” Ford said
“I’ve never heard that in my whole life as an elected official.”
beyond having a high school diploma or GED
are trained through a one semester course that allows them to assess vital signs
operate an automated external defibrillator
splint injured limbs and assess a patient’s medical condition through a series of questions
according to the city of Chicago’s EMT and paramedics information
Paramedics typically must have experience as EMT basics and complete advanced training and extensive clinical experiences that allow them to intubate a patient
administer medications and gain a greater understanding of anatomy and physiology
Chicago EMT basics typically make earn between $30,000 and $50,000 per year
where Chicago paramedics make between $42,000 and $63,000
according to the Lifeline Ambulance Network
Ford declined to divulge details on savings brought by changing minimum staffing within the Fire Department
but said the decision was made with taxpayers in mind
The Local 2720 post received support from the Oak Forest Fire Fighters Union Local 3039
which posted that it was a “sad day for our neighbors to the east.”
“Lowering the bar or the level of care is never the answer and only makes the administrator’s and elected officials’ lives easier!” the union wrote in their post

IL — A Country Club Hills man on Tuesday was arrested and charged in connection with an attempted carjacking in Tinley Park in September
approached a 27-year-old man as he was leaving work Sept
Britton brandished a handgun and demanded the man give him the keys to his car
and Britton was able to grab the man’s key fob before pistol whipping him and entering the man’s 2012 Dodge Challenger
After realizing he’d grabbed the remote start and not the keys
officials say Britton fled without taking the Challenger
As previously reported by Patch, Britton then eluded authorities for hours
Cook County Forest Preserve Police and Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm Systems attempted to find him
police said Tinley Park detectives were able to identify Britton as the suspect through his social media accounts and determined he was living in the South Loop in Chicago
Detectives contacted Chicago Police Department officers assigned to the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force
who began an investigation into Britton’s whereabouts
The Chicago Police Department found and arrested Britton on March 3
He was arrested and charged with felony aggravated vehicular hijacking
“This superb investigative follow-up and great cooperation by multiple law enforcement agencies led to the successful arrest of this offender,” Mayor Michael Glotz said
“Their efforts should be applauded and admired.”
“This was great police work by our detectives and shows just how dedicated and talented they are,” Police Chief Tom Tilton said
“Our streets are safer because of their efforts
and I thank them on behalf of the entire Tinley Park community.”
Mayor Alsberry Welcomes Calumet Country Club to the Village of Hazel Crest (Hazel Crest, IL) — Mayor Vernard Alsberry and the Village of Hazel Crest on Tuesday voted unanimously to annex the Calumet Country Club property located at 175th St
“This is a great opportunity for the Southland,” said Mayor Alsberry
“We have been working hard to revitalize the village and this opportunity will allow for further investments in our community.” The proposed development of the land includes a number of businesses and amenities for the village and surrounding communities to enjoy
Mayor Alsberry said that the village and the residents could see a lower tax bill by developing the village’s business base
“Cook County property taxes are based on business
If a village or city isn’t bringing in the tax revenue from businesses
We are seeing sky-high tax bills that are pushing people out
We want the village to be affordable for all our residents
we need more economic investment and opportunity here.”
The village has been working hard to ensure that residents have a diverse community with more than just houses and empty storefronts. “We have a lot of amazing things happening here. Hazel Crest Proper is being transformed into a beautiful art district
We have turned the old fire station into an arts center
and we can benefit tremendously from the economic development that this project could bring,” Mayor Alsberry said
Some of the proposed projects for the land include more attractions
the development of the property could benefit the Southland as a whole
“Mayor Agpawa of Markham and Mayor Ford of Country Club Hills have expressed their support for the development
The development is also backed by the Chicago Southland Development Authority
the Southland Black Chamber of Commerce and a number of others who also believe that the development can bring more economic opportunity to the Southland,” said Mayor Alsberry
Southland Black Chamber of Commerce board member and owner of Rucker Holdings said
“I believe that Mayor Alsberry is doing a great job
A development like this can help bridge some of the disparities that exist in the African-American community
Bringing amenities that have long-since ignored the communities where black and brown people live is a breath of fresh air
I am excited to see what the development brings.”
Opponents of the project say that the development will bring unwanted truck traffic to the area
despite the fact that most of the streets surrounding the property do not allow for truck traffic
“All truck traffic must take a designated route
There is very direct access to the expressways from the property,” stated Mayor Alsberry
The village has already taken the steps to ensure that Dixie Hwy
would be expanded and widened to allow for more car and truck traffic
“I have opened discussions with the State of Illinois and the developer to make sure that we are addressing any traffic concerns.”
“This development is something that we need to discuss as a community
We must have input before moving forward with any zoning requests and developments
The safety and betterment of my community is always my top priority.”

The 2051 U.S. Open will be the centennial anniversary of Ben Hogan's U.S. Open victory at Oakland Hills
The course has far fewer trees with wide open sightlines
rolling greens that are a hallmark of Ross' design
The USGA made the commitment to Oakland Hills in 2022
marking it as one of the main courses to be featured over the coming years
along with other iconic venues such as Pinehurst
Here are quick facts to know about Oakland Hills
READ MORE: How Oakland Hills convinced USGA to bring US Open back to Michigan
Oakland Hills Country Club has an illustrious history full of many of golf's greatest champions
The club was founded in 1916 by Norval Hawkins and Joseph Mack
The South Course opened in 1918 and quickly became home to prominent residents of Detroit at the time
and began hosting club championships annually
Mack hired Walter Hagen in 1918 as the club's first professional — for $300 per month
plus any profits from golf equipment sales
(Hagen's 11 major wins are third all-time.)
The first major golf tournament was the 1922 Western Open
won by Oakland Hills pro Mike Brady; it was the first tournament won by a professional host
Junior Amateur comes during the 100-year anniversary of the first U.S
part of the 11 USGA events to take place there during its 106-year history
Open in 1951 on the remade "Monster," later describing it as the hardest course he had played
Open over a crowded field that included amateur Jack Nicklaus
followed by a 24-year hiatus until the 1985 U.S
won by Andy North despite shooting 74 on Sunday
The course has also hosted a PGA Championship three times. Gary Player won the first in 1972 after hitting a towering iron over the pond on the 16th hole during the final round, which he has described as the best golf shot of his illustrious career
David Graham won the 1979 PGA by beating Ben Crenshaw in a three-hole playoff
Padraig Harrington won the most recent major hosted at Oakland Hills
as well as dozens of club and state-level tournaments
the course hosted the Ryder Cup between the U.S
which the Europeans took home with the widest margin of victory for their team in the competition's history
Oakland Hills Country Club has hosted numerous championship tournaments
Open: Gene Littler1972 PGA Championship: Gary Player1979 PGA Championship: David Graham in playoff over Ben Crenshaw1981 U.S
Senior Open: Arnold Palmer in playoff over Billy Casper
Amateur: Ricky Barnes 2004 Ryder Cup: Team Europe2008 PGA Championship: Padraig Harrington2016 U.S

a renowned golf course architect who also designed Detroit Golf Club (now home of the PGA Tour's Rocket Mortgage Classic)
"The Lord intended this for a golf course" when he first saw the property
IT IS TIME: Oakland Hills, Michigan's 'cathedral of championship golf,' ready to return to spotlight
The par-72 course first had few trees and was played as a par-35 on the front 9 and a par-37 on the back
It became a par-36 on both nines ahead of the 1937 U.S
converting the fifth hole to a par-5 and the 14th to a par-4
the course removed 19 bunkers as part of a renovation cut short by World War II
The South Course remained largely untouched until 2006
when Rees Jones followed his father and increased the length of the course to more than 7,400 yards
and re-positioned bunkers and water on the course
Ross' further plans for renovations were discovered in 2016
leading to the recent restoration to fit his vision
which opened in 1924 just ahead of the first U.S
before becoming private again after a member vote
The North Course was renovated by Jones to increase its yardage and re-order the holes in the late '60s
Shawn Smith re-designed the 15th and 16th holes
while increasing the yardage to more than 6,800 yards
as director of agronomy Phil Cuffare explained in June
"We brought back the scale of the property," Cuffare said then
referring to the length and undulating hills on each hole
which now can be viewed with fewer trees blocking the layout
features more than 200,000 square feet of bunkering that line the fairways and greens
has more than 100 fewer trees than when it hosted the '08 PGA Championship and the greens were enlarged
adding in slopes and pin location possibilities

“Country Club Hills’ strategic location near three major highways
the Metra Electric line and the Indiana border gives the Bears the opportunity to develop a world class stadium and experience that management purports to want for the team’s future growth,” Gordon said in a statement
The first-term commissioner said she sent a letter to team brass last month
insisting their stadium investment could transform “a predominantly Black area into a thriving residential
business and entertainment district that will build generational wealth not only for the Bears
but families throughout the Chicago Southland.”
Country Club Hills is the fifth suburb to publicly court the team since its flirtation with Arlington Heights hit the rocks in June
when the Bears said the $197 million Arlington Park property they bought was no longer their “singular focus” for a new stadium
That’s because local school districts have pushed back against team efforts to lower their property taxes
Arlington Heights remains a strong contender for the stadium
A few state legislators have also floated Rockford as a far-flung potential home for the Bears
but officials in the city 90 miles northwest of Soldier Field have not made a pitch
the team has said it’s had “positive and productive discussions” with Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson about staying within their namesake city limits
The team punted on efforts during the current legislative session in Springfield to land tax breaks for its proposed $5 billion Arlington Heights development
But it’s expected to make another run at state lawmakers in January

A woman died after being attacked by several dogs June 3
A woman was killed in a dog attack Wednesday in south suburban Country Club Hills
to the 3900 block of West 167th Place for reports of a dog attack
they found four dogs mauling 70-year-old Kati Amos
Officers shot at the dogs to get into the yard
One dog was hit while the rest scattered throughout the yard
The dogs belonged to Amos and her relatives
She was taken to an area hospital and pronounced dead
Amos lived in the same block where the attack happened
The Cook County medical examiner’s office said she died of her injuries
Cook County Animal Care and Control was called to tranquilize and take in the dogs
Country Club Hills police said that Amos died after being attacked by four dogs in her driveway on 167th Place
Responding officers open fired on the dogs so they could enter the gated area in the back of the driveway where Amos was located
One of the dogs was shot and killed and the other three fled the driveway into the neighbor's yard
Cook County Animal Control took custody of all four dogs
and resided at the location where the attack occurred
Merrill Amos also resides at this location on 167th Place and runs a backyard pit bull breeding operation
he called four pit bull puppies "champions" and his asking price was $700
Police have not released the breeds of dogs involved
A person living at the victim's home was selling pit bulls on Facebook as recently as February
was killed by up to four family dogs on her own property in Country Club Hills
The fatal dog mauling occurred in the 3900 block of 167th Place

Good analogy… our neighborhoods becoming like the wilds of the Serengeti Plain… due to meat grinder pit bulls next door
“Do they remember victim dogs being killed on sidewalks or during invasion of yard and homes
Do they remember adult humans losing arms legs scalps and lives to dogs that invaded yards or public places?
Dog fighters don’t use normal non bully dogs because normal dogs aren’t “good” at killing
And that something is how the new across-the-street neighbors can afford to rent a house for $1,400 a month when none of the adults appears to have a steady job
What is Merrill Amos’ relationship to Kati Amos
So a relative was breeding the dogs that killed this woman
At first reading this I thought it was a neighbor’s dogs
I hope all of them get euthanized if they haven’t already (minus the one that was killed at the scene)
And I wonder what’s going to be stated as the trigger that caused the pits to maul
I feel like there’s been so much victim blaming on the elderly lately
between the appalling conditions in the nursing homes and pitbulls eating the elderly without consequences
us old fogies are living in a horror novel
