Timberlake x Nike shoe collab early access Riviera is an annual stop on the PGA Tour People go to great lengths to get on Riviera Country Club, but this method does not come recommended.  At around 1 p.m. on Friday, a small plane made an emergency landing at the prestigious private club in Santa Monica Calif., buzzing low over the course and bouncing to a halt in a wild scene captured on cell phone video.  According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, there were no injuries to anyone on the ground or to any of the three people on the plane, KTLA Channel 5 in Los Angeles reported.  A Riviera representative told Golf.com by phone that the club could not comment on the matter. In the video of the incident, which quickly went viral, a man’s voice is heard calling out in surprise from the course as a phone camera focuses on the near distance. Moments later, a single-engine Cessna comes into view, winging low up the the 1st fairway and bouncing on the turf just left of the 2nd green before swerving to a stop by the 10th tee as startled golfers look on. Yet it’s also new ground, as The Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course will host the PGA TOUR for the first time. It also marks the TOUR’s first trip to Philadelphia since the 2018 BMW Championship at Aronimink Golf Club, won by Keegan Bradley. Here’s all you need to know about the 1922 A.W. Tillinghast design that takes center stage for this week’s Truist Championship. In 1922, the club opened its Wissahickon Course, designed by A.W. Tillinghast, on a (then) remote 321-acre parcel four miles further northwest of town in the adjoining suburb of Flourtown. This will be the site of the Truist Championship. A look at The Philadelphia Cricket Club, host of the 2025 Truist Championship. (Credit: The Philadelphia Cricket Club) There was enough unused land on that Flourtown site for a third course, Militia Hill, designed by Michael J. Hurdzan and Dana Fry and opened in 2002. The Wissahickon Course has hosted the 2015 PGA Professional National Championship (won by Matt Dobyns), PGA TOUR Champions’ 2016 Kaulig Companies Championship (won by Bernhard Langer) and the 2024 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship (won by Brian Blanchard and Sam Engel). A keen writer and golf editorialist with strong opinions, Tillinghast made his mark on design through distinctive greens, dramatic greenside bunkering, and a penchant for such trademark holes as the drop-shot par 3 (Wissahickon’s 14th) and the mid-fairway “Great Hazard” at a par 5 (Wissahickon’s 15th). Tillinghast was a golf partner and occasional advisor to such native Philadelphia design innovators as Hugh Wilson, George A. Crump, William Flynn and George C. Thomas. Their cultivation of a heathland look and adaptation of links features to sandy sites (including Pine Valley Golf Club) formed one of the more influential design trends that comprised the “Golden Age” in the period between the two world wars. For all his success as a golf architect, Tillinghast fell victim to the Great Depression and a series of failed investments that nearly bankrupted him, and he moved in with a daughter in his final years. Today, his artistic genius is enshrined through his status as a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Veteran course designer Keith Foster has increasingly focused his practice on restoration. Among his other Tillinghast reclamations are Sand Point Golf Club on Long Island, Baltimore Country Club - Five Farms, and Brook Hollow Golf Club in Dallas. A greenside view of the fifth hole at The Philadelphia Cricket Club. (Credit: The Philadelphia Cricket Club) Foster’s restoration enhanced many distinct aspects of Tillinghast’s course. They include side-by-side par 3s running in opposite directions (third and 14th holes); a greenside bunker on the par-4 13th with a corner of the locker room building touching upon the hazard; an elevated railway line coming into play on the slice side of two long par 4s (fourth and 17th); and vast tracts of wavy, tawny fescue grass on the outside of holes to provide a native textural framing. That routing, starting on the members’ eighth hole and ending on the fourth, created the routing that will be used for the Truist Championship: Nos. 8-18, 1-3, 7-5-6-4. It sounds confusing but works well on the ground, with short green-to-tee walks and a crescendo of a golf course that starts with back-to-back par 4s and builds to a “hold on for dear life” finish The dramatic finish at the Wissahickon Course is actually set up by a vexing little par 3, the 14th hole, only 122 yards to the most tightly bunkered green on the course. From there, it’s as if the grounds suddenly open up and all hell breaks loose. No. 16, 215 yards, par 3: Slightly downhill, to a green protected up front by a tiny stream. The putting surface here, according to The Philadelphia Cricket Club Director of Golf Jim Smith Jr., “Doesn't offer a flat putt anywhere, least of all inside 5 feet.” No. 17, 498 yards, par 4: A slightly elevated railway line down the entire right side of the hole looms as an ominous obstacle and subliminally leads players to favor the left side on the drive and approach shot. No. 18, 517 yards, par 4: The narrowest landing area off the tee on the course thanks to three flanking fairway bunkers and a green whose entrance is pinched on both sides by sand. When Langer won the 2016 Kaulig Companies Championship in windy conditions, he had to pitch out from a fairway bunker and ultimately made a difficult 10-footer for par for a one-stroke victory over Joe Durant and Miguel Angel Jiménez. A greenside view of the 18th hole at The Philadelphia Cricket Club. (Credit: The Philadelphia Cricket Club) Back in 2016, the average driving distance on PGA TOUR Champions was 275 yards. On the 2025 PGA TOUR through April 25, the average drive is 300 yards. While the Wissahickon Course is only 101 yards longer now from 2016, the Truist Championship competitors will have gained on average, 350 yards (25 yards x 14 drives). How will the course hold up – even those last four holes? “The greens,” Smith said. “It’s all in the greens. There isn’t a straight putt to be found, especially if the greens are running at Stimpmeter speeds of 12-plus.” The Philadelphia Cricket Club – Wissahickon Course Copyright © 2025 PGA TOUR, Inc. Manhattan High boys’ golf finished second overall Friday at the Rusty Hilst Invitational, hosted at Carey Park Golf Course in Hutchinson. The Indians shot a team score of 290, just two strokes behind first-place Blue Valley North, who won with a 288. Manhattan edged out Shawnee Mission East (292), Bishop Carroll (294) and Olathe West (301) in a field that included 31 teams and 168 golfers. Senior Tate Reid led the way for the Indians with a 3-under 69, tying for third individually. The only lower scores on the day came from Brady Rapp (Blue Valley North) and Hudson Bennish (Shawnee Mission East), who each shot 68. Manhattan also had two other top-10 finishers, as Jackson Powers and Charlie Haney each shot 73, tying for ninth alongside three other golfers. Cade Cochran followed with a 75 to place 21st, and Cooper Graham added a 77, placing 36th. The Owensboro Times News By John Kirkpatrick The Summit Country Club opened in June 1993 with the American Red Cross Golf Classic, marking the beginning of a new era for golf in Owensboro. But few could have predicted the rollercoaster journey the course would take over the next three decades — or the perseverance it would require to become what it is today. Now known as The Pearl Club, the course underwent a transformation under the ownership of Terry and Melody Delk, who purchased it in 2014. It has become a thriving destination once again, drawing more than 20,000 rounds of golf annually and serving as a cornerstone for the surrounding Summit neighborhood. But Delk will tell you, the journey was anything but easy. “When we bought it, we didn’t know our fairways were dead from winter kill,” Delk said. “My very first meeting with the members was telling them, ‘We have no fairways.’” Rather than backing down, Delk leaned on his faith, the encouragement of friends, and the resilience of the club’s members. Membership donations helped bridge the gap to upgrade to zoysia grass, a better but slower-maturing surface. “It was a two-year growing process,” Delk said. “We went from 20,000 rounds before the shutdown to 8,000 the first year we reopened, and then only 12,000 the next year. It took time.” At several points, Delk admitted he questioned the decision. By 2019, he was on the verge of closing the doors. “I put my life savings into it and still was losing money,” he said. “It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done.” Then, the COVID-19 pandemic changed everything. With most recreational activities canceled, golf surged nationwide by 40%. Families rediscovered the sport, and The Pearl Club rode the wave. Memberships stabilized, rounds returned, and today, Delk said, the club is no longer “hemorrhaging money.” Still, it took more than timing to get the course to where it is now, with Delk crediting a loyal and hardworking team, including Superintendent Nolan White and Head Professional Dylan Hardesty, for helping rebuild the course’s reputation. “Now we have the best fairways around,” Delk said. “Our course conditions are better than ever, and a lot of our growth is coming from players across southern Indiana who are looking for affordable, high-quality golf.” Beyond the course, The Pearl Club offers members access to a pool, six pickleball courts, and a full-service restaurant open to the public Tuesday through Saturday. The club’s connection to the Summit neighborhood remains strong. Delk said it’s no exaggeration to say the survival of the course helped preserve the community’s property values. “When golf courses close, nationwide data shows property values can drop by up to 35%,” Delk said. “Since we stabilized the club, home values have risen, and nearly every lot has been built out.” The name The Pearl Club carries personal meaning for Delk as well. It was chosen during a family car ride home from his father’s funeral, with inspiration striking when his wife suggested “The Pearl” — a nod to Delk’s mother’s middle name, even though she famously disliked both golf and her middle name. “At first, I laughed,” Delk said. “But it stuck. And it fits. It reminds me that even through the struggles, there’s something beautiful at the core.” Today, Delk is proud of what the club has become — not just for himself, but for everyone who supported the vision through the toughest times. “I tell people all the time, nobody really understands how much blood, sweat, tears — and money — go into something like this,” he said. “But seeing families out here, seeing kids playing golf with their parents, seeing the community thrive again — that’s what makes it all worth it.” Features Privacy Policy Site by Tanner+West
