The daughter of Prince William and the Princess of Wales turns 10 today
Princess Charlotte is celebrating her 10th birthday today, and her mother, Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales
has marked the occasion by sharing a new photograph of the young royal
the heartwarming snapshot shows Princess Charlotte on an adventurous-looking walk in Cumbria
dressed up in camouflage gear and a rucksack as she beams into the camera surrounded by rolling hills
‘Happy 10th Birthday Princess Charlotte!’ read the caption to the photograph, shared to the Prince and Princess of Wales’ official Instagram account
The image was reportedly taken by Catherine on her iPhone camera during a family walk in Cumbria earlier this year
Royal fans were quick to react to the new picture of Princess Charlotte, with many pointing out the family resemblance between the young Princess and her father, Prince William
This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from
In her love of nature, though, it's clear that Princess Charlotte has taken after her mother. The Princess of Wales has recently been showcasing her own outdoorsy style on her trip to the Isle of Mull with Prince William, donning blazers and skinny jeans as she celebrated her 14th wedding anniversary with the Prince of Wales.
Like mother, like daughter: Catherine recently showcased her own outdoorsy style on a trip to the Isle of Mull
The Princess of Wales will reign with a clear vision and unprecedented approach to her role, say royal experts
royal insiders have recently been reflecting on the role that Charlotte will play on the world stage as she comes of age
with one describing her as the ‘secret weapon’ of the royal family
and Princess Charlotte of Wales during Trooping the Colour on 15 June
And from one international sensation to another, Princess Charlotte is known for her love of Taylor Swift – whose music will no doubt be playing as the family celebrates her birthday today. Princess Charlotte is a ‘huge Taylor Swift fan’ and had wanted to go to the Eras tour for months before the royal family attended the concert at Wembley
Taylor Swift and her boyfriend Travis Kelce are pictured with the Prince of Wales, Prince George and Princess Charlotte
Before the time of ‘three of us in this marriage’ infamy, Camilla Parker Bowles and the late Diana, Princess of Wales were on good terms
'Princess Charlotte is the huge Taylor Swift fan in the family
She has wanted to go to the concert for months
this was a really special day to be able to celebrate her Papa's birthday like this.'
It was Princess Charlotte who brought the Swiftie craze of friendship bracelets making to the royal family, and after her trip to the Eras tour, Prince George and Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh
It’s not the only style guidance that Princess Charlotte has offered her loved ones
Prince William revealed that she convinced him to shave off his new beard
bursting into ‘floods of tears’ when she saw her father’s hirsute new look
Perhaps she has grown to love the Prince's facial hair
as it seems he will be sporting it once more as the Wales family gathers to celebrate Charlotte's birthday today

-- The Escambia County Sheriff's Office is investigating a homicide that occurred in Ferry Pass on Friday morning
Deputies say neighbors woke up and found a man dead in the lawn with an apparent gunshot wound
Those who live in this part of Country Walk Drive were shocked when they woke up to find a man lying dead in the front lawn of a home
Neighbor Keaundra Fegin says she heard nothing out of the ordinary Friday morning
"It is a very heartbreaking scene to just come out and see the police officers and the crime scene tape like that," says Fegin
"I've never experienced anything like that."
When deputies arrived to the complex Friday morning
they determined the man's death was a homicide
The man's identity has not been released
Fegin says she's lived in this area for months and said this part of the area is normally quiet
But said the violence around Escambia County has gotten worse
a very sad situation to see how Pensacola has..
"And the violence and the homicides and everything has gotten extremely worse
The most recent act of gun violence in the Ferry Pass area happened in July
Deputies say a shootout took place in the parking lot of the Dreamland Skate Center
No suspects have been identified in that case
Crime scene investigators spent the morning canvassing the neighborhood looking for any information to determine what lead to the man's death
Investigators were seen looking at home surveillance cameras and looking through a vehicle that was hauled away from the scene
"My prayers go out the family," says Fegin
"I've been in a situation like that before
It's not an easy thing to endure."
If you have any information that may help the investigation
you're asked to call the Escambia County Sheriff's Office

and it seems as if Major League Baseball players agree
Maybe you didn’t notice the last time you took in a ball game
but when it is a player's turn in the batting order (or when they come running into the game from the bullpen to relieve a teammate)
the stadium is filled with walk-up music of the batter's choosing
Some players change their entrance music often
use the same song for the majority of their careers
I still remember Jones coming to hit with Black Sabbath's "Crazy Train" blasting through the speakers
But what about in today’s Major League Baseball world? According to this chart from Brooks Gate
Outside of Billy Squier's 1981 hit "The Stroke," country songs have four of the Top 5 walk-up songs this season
Personally, I love seeing Cody Jinks getting some love down the list. Perhaps the biggest surprise is that Morgan Wallen is far down the list with "Cowgirls" — you'd guess he would be higher in popularity among today's baseball stars

– Several women accused a 26-year-old Cuban migrant who works in construction of masturbating while stalking them at their homes in Miami-Dade County
A victim reported he even knocked on her window and left his semen on the glass

Miami-Dade detectives reported they have incriminating surveillance videos of 26-year-old Yoel Setienmartinez
also known as Yoel Antonio Setien Martinez
and his tattoos — including one of a girl with a wolf — were helpful in a case that took months to solve
According to the Miami-Dade police arrest report
the women who identified Setien were 39 to 61 years old and residents of Miami-Dade’s Country Walk neighborhood
there were girls as young as 10 and 16 years old in the home
reported she first spotted Setien masturbating in her backyard at about 2:45 a.m.
and she was terrified when he returned to do the same thing at about 10:35 p.m.
a 39-year-old woman reported that Setien stood on a neighboring roof to spy on her at about 9:35 p.m.
and a 61-year-old woman reported she was getting dressed when she saw Setien masturbating in her backyard at about 8:25 a.m.
a surveillance camera recorded Setien kneeling in the bushes shortly before 8:30 p.m.
close to one of the homes of his prior victims
and police officers arrested him shortly after 9:35 p.m.
“It is sickening that you have to be worried about someone invading your privacy
someone that is obviously mentally ill,” said concerned neighbor Gabriel Caballero
Setien admitted to entering several fenced backyards over the course of several months
One of the home belonged to a woman who spoke to Local 10 about the incidents but asked not to show her face for fear he may return
(He was) looking through my windows,” she said
Resident told Local 10 News’ Roy Ramos they believe their community was being targeted because the suspect didn’t live far
He lived right in the neighborhood and he was accessing their yards right on the other side of a hedge
Records show Setien was at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on Friday facing 23 charges: 10 counts of burglary of an occupied dwelling
and one count of resisting an officer without violence

Four months after a fatal shooting in Ferry Pass
Escambia County Sheriff's deputies arrested a Pensacola man and woman and charged both with second-degree murder
Deputies arrested 27-year-old Derrick Stewart and 21-year-old Desirae McCants Wednesday in connection with the death of Larry Spires III on Sept
"Due to the above stated facts and circumstances
it is apparent that McCants and Stewart traveled to 8330 Country Walk (Dr.) to meet with Spires III," police records said
"It is apparent that Stewart exits the black 2015 Nissan sedan regularly driven by McCants and shoots and kills Spires III shortly after exiting the vehicle."
Family members of Spires told law enforcement that he may have had a problem with another man named "Bo." Since "Bo" was involved in a previous ECSO call
investigators knew they were looking for Stewart
Another witness who was in a "casual relationship" with Spires told investigators that he had "recently been seeing" McCants
who was also in a relationship with Stewart
the ECSO discovered McCants and Spires had made several phone calls with one another before the shooting
"When McCants and Stewart arrive in the area of 8330 Country Walk moments before Spires III was murdered
it is apparent based on video footage that McCants who was driving the vehicle
parked in a preplanned position and location where flight from the scene would be quicker by backing into a parking space," records say
The Office of the State Attorney has charged both McCants and Stewart with second-degree murder
Stewart is additionally charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon
Both are scheduled to be arraigned on their charges Feb

medieval fortifications clambered out from the marshland ahead of me
designated ‘Ancient Town’ to come
Winchelsea is one of the highlights of the 1066 Country Walk
which threads 31 miles along rolling Wealden hills between the coastal towns of Pevensey and Rye
Relaunched in 2021, the trail commemorates East Sussex‘s association with the Norman conquest
The path is waymarked by 10 sculptures created by local artist Keith Pettit
If split into two days of 15 or so miles, the first day sees the walker set off from Pevensey, where William’s Norman army landed on 27 September 1066, and head to Battle, where the Battle of Hastings took place on 14 October 1066
The Normans occupied the castle at Pevensey in 1066
which was once a Roman fortress and whose surviving
impressively robust curtain wall is originally Roman
The 1066 Country Walk picks up across the road where a shady corridor opens onto the Pevensey Levels
This Site of Special Scientific Interest is traversed with a steady plod over flat paths intersecting wetland meadows
The path ascends into the woody and gently rolling hills of the High Weald and soon passes directly in view of the 15th century
A few more miles took me alongside Senlac Hill, the generally accepted site of the Battle of Hastings. Battle Abbey was built on its summit on the orders of King William to mark the battle and perhaps compensate
inns and private apartments if prepared in advance
there are also campsites a taxi journey away
On the other hand, perhaps a more authentic means of bedding down on the route is to pitch surreptitiously beneath the conifers of Battle Great Wood, an old woodland criss-crossed by wide, muddy tracks. The early medieval English made use of the woods for charcoal and the iron industry
I claimed a well-drained patch between their roots onto which I unfurled a pocket-sized tent
The following morning I wriggled from my sleeping bag to a quiet dawn chorus. Overnight rain had made gummy bog of the morning’s tracks which headed south and east towards Rye
I had to remove my bag to crawl beneath a tree that had been wrenched over a walkway
I made coffee and porridge in a field beside a big oak
A regular sight along the 1066 Country Walk are converted oast houses
where hops were dried and stored for brewing
allude to the centuries of rural hop-growing which preceded 20th century industrialisation
The walk soon broke onto open pasture and delivered me to a sculpture known as Farbanks Henge
a circle of oak monoliths inspired by trees on the Bayeux Tapestry
and walked with him on the subsequent miles of country lanes and meadows through Icklesham to Winchelsea
he pointed out the isolated ruins of a gatehouse
I was already attuned to the town’s intriguing past
Over the past day I’d listened to Alex Prestons’ 2022 novel Winchelsea
which depicts the smuggling operations which ran rife in the area in the 18th century
The town was an important node in cross-Channel trade and became affiliated with the confederation of ‘Cinque Ports’
The present town was assembled on a grid in 1288
after ‘Old’ Winchelsea was abandoned to the sea – its name plausibly deriving from language for the marshland (‘qwent’) and the beach (‘chesil’)
which sits on a ridge above the intervening marshland
Rye is a substantially larger town with impressive historic remains
Its photogenic streets climb from venerable inns towards the Citadel
built to protect Rye and its harbour from later French raiders
I chose to wait in Winchelsea a little longer
I ate lunch while looking over its striking
half-ruined church and contemplating the extensive wine cellars which run under the town
and on Winchelsea’s Beacon Hill I dropped my bag by the remains of a mill destroyed by the Great Storm of 1987
which was once also the site of a Saxon church
at how the Weald comes to kneel at the sea
Then I lay with my back on the old mill stone
my mind alive to the tales I had gathered over the past two days

A MAN has died after getting stuck in the mud for over 24 hours while crossing a boggy field on a country walk.
William Morris Jones, 92, was reported missing on December 28 last year.
A major search was launched for the pensioner on the day but he could not be found.
However, William was later sadly found dead in a waterlogged field in Criccieth, Wales.
An inquest into the retired groundsman's death today has since uncovered the harrowing facts.
Assistant coroner Sarah Riley confirmed that he was found after he had walked across an "incredibly boggy" field.
She told the inquest how the conditions were "extremely difficult" to pass.
The assistant coroner said William then "appears to have been stuck in the mud whilst crossing the field".
Ms Riley added: "It was a route he would take often but unfortunately the conditions were extremely difficult to pass."
A post mortem examination was carried out by a pathologist at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd.
A police inspector officially declared William had died at 6.04pm on December 29 and he was identified by documents
At the time time he went missing he was wearing brown cord trousers
William had walking shoes and was carrying a rucksack
A spokesperson for the NWP Gwynedd South policing team previously said: “The man has now formally been identified as 92-year-old William
who we circulated as missing on December 28th
"There are thought to be no suspicious circumstances
"Our deepest condolences remain with William’s family
who have requested for their privacy to be respected at this difficult time
volunteers and members of the public who assisted in our searches.”
The assistant coroner Ms Riley adjourned the inquest to a later date pending the completion of further investigations

Nashville's 2024 Music City Walk of Fame ceremony highlighted all corners and eras of the city's multitude of harmonious legacies
Honoring Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jimmy Buffett
WSM 650 broadcaster and Grand Ole Opry announcer Bill Cody
Grammy-winning gospel quartet The Fairfield Four and Ryman Hospitality Partners' Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors Colin Reed satisfied all facets of how
national and global creators to its environs to celebrate music's inspiration
the Music City Walk of Fame festivities are hosted by Cody
given that the 30-year Nashville industry veteran was being inducted
his on-air partner — at WSM Radio and on the Grand Ole Opry — Kelly Sutton assumed those duties
She opened the festivities with a greeting
then turned over the stage to Nashville Mayor Freddie O'Connell
who noted that the Music City Walk of Fame was "Nashville's most exclusive club," a "sacred space filled with stars that never fade."
over 100 permanent sidewalk medallions with inductees' names displayed in a star design- have been inlaid in the park across from the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum
honors "those from all genres of music who have contributed to the world through song or other industry collaboration and made a significant contribution to the music industry with connection to Music City."
celebrated for their 'supernatural magic'One hundred years ago
a quartet of vocalists was initially formed as an acapella gospel act at North Nashville's Fairfield Baptist Church
via the soundtrack of the Coen Brothers-directed "O Brother Where Art Thou?," the quartet achieved global significance as foundational pieces of where gospel's spirit existed in pop-friendly Americana
another Nashville-based and gospel-influenced Grammy winner
offered that the quartet had "supernaturally anointed voices" and were "as much a part of Nashville as the soil beneath us."
posthumously inducted by chart-topping country songwriter and Buffett's Coral Reefer Band guitarist Mac McAnally
provided similar joy for the crowd in attendance
in a parrot-headed costume watched on amongst hundreds
McAnally discussed how Mississippi native Buffett evolved a sense of self-expression that
from songs like "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" and "Margaritaville" blended Nashville's outlaw sensibilities with a pop flair that inspired generations of artists from Paul McCartney to Kenny Chesney
Buffett's daughter Delaney delivered a tear-jerking speech that highlighted how he was "a pirate and poet who never took himself too seriously," whose musical catalog "taught people the tricks to being happy."
she quoted Buffett's 1973 song "He Went to Paris" as an epilogue to her father's storied life as a singer
it's important to note that the Ryman-owned Opry turns 100 in 2025
The duo's inductions represent a beacon for what the Opry strives to showcase as the best of what Nashville has been and will remain a defining American cultural bellwether
Cody's entire lifetime is encapsulated by country
pop and rock synergizing at the forefront of global cool
As a self-described "Kentucky hillbilly preacher's kid captivated by radio," he was educated on the importance of the history of the Opry's broadcaster

he was an inductee into the Country Music Disc Jockey Hall of Fame
Country & Cody" and being an announcer/host at the Opry have yielded multiple nominations for CMA
his co-host Sutton noted how Cody's studied appreciation of country's numerous histories and legacies color his broadcasting prowess
his quarter-century of work dedicated primarily to inspiring Nashville's national and global revival in popularity was highlighted
Squarely focusing on elevating Nashville's hospitality and entertainment offerings has led him to lead a varied Music City creative life
expanding through aiding in developing the "Nashville" television series and navigating Gaylord Entertainment Group into its Ryman Hospitality Group evolution
Ryman Hospitality Group is now earning revenues eclipsing over $2 billion yearly with entertainment
he oversaw a significant strategic investment by Atairos and NBCUniversal to bolster the growth of Opry Entertainment Group and expand its global reach
Describing himself as a Nashville transplant with no intentions of ever moving from town

London
here are the best walks within easy reach of London
We know that Londoners love to dress in hiking gear: you can’t move in east London without rubbing shoulders with a sentient Arc’teryx jacket
or stomping on a pair of fresh Salomon trainers. So
why not put all that technical wear to good use and take it on a scenic ramble through the English countryside
You can’t go wrong with a bit of fresh air
especially if it’s followed by a good sesh in a traditional pub
While there are a number of pretty walking routes in London
if you fancy something a bit more rural – the kind of trek that isn’t perennially two minutes from a bus stop – then head off on these hikes near London and you'll discover that the green and pleasant land beyond Zone 6 has plenty to offer.
From a bluebell-laden amble through Epping Forest
to a bracing walk along the Seven Sisters cliffs
So pop on your XT6s and head to one of these wonderful hikes near London.

The footpath (waymarked with acorn symbols) follows the curve of the river as it flows south
which is home to red kites and rare orchids.

Hadrian’s Wall Path: Housesteads to Sycamore GapOne day
As far as the Romans were concerned, Hadrian’s Wall represented the northernmost limit of the civilised world – two millennia later, it retains the aura of a wild, windswept frontier, especially when seen by walkers on Hadrian's Wall Path
The central section is the most swashbuckling stretch: the trail passes bleak whin sill crags
cold lakes and stones that remember the footfalls of the legions
It’s an easy there-and-back march from the Roman fortress at Housesteads to Sycamore Gap – the site of a poetically lonely tree that found fame in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves
Offa’s Dyke: Pandy to Hay-on-WyeOne long day
The Cleveland Way: Staithes to Robin Hood’s BayOne day
This is the ultimate choice for walkers looking for a rambling hike to be alone with thoughts and at one with nature
The Cleveland Way winds across the North York Moors
around impressive abbeys and the North Sea coastline
or rest your feet at similarly picturesque Kettleness
Whitby (home to some of the UK's best fish and chips) is also well worth a stop-off before moving on to the smuggler's haunt of Robin Hood's Bay
Southern Upland Way: Over the Galloway HillsTwo days
When most walkers think of Scotland
But in-the-know walkers quietly covet the Lowlands
where gentle hills and mysterious woodlands give way to vast
Choose your preferred section of The Southern Upload Way
or tackle the entire route – starting at Bargrennan
the walk takes you through the valleys of Glen Trool (history buffs will recognise the name from the First War of Scottish Independence) before heading towards spookily named landmarks such as the Dungeon Hills or ‘the Awful Hand’
If you want to spread the walk across two days
Finish off at St John's Town of Dalry
The Ridgeway: Overton Hill to Sparsholt FirsTwo days
The Ridgeway has been traversed by roving wayfarers and marching soldiers for centuries
Start with the mystical standing stones of Avebury
a World Heritage Site with Neolithic and Bronze Age stone circles and henge
Work your way to Overton Hill and head east through sheep-covered farmlands and shadowy forests before climbing the Iron Age hillfort of Barbury Castle to soak up the Wessex vistas
Split the trip in two with a night in Ogbourne St George
and reward your efforts with views of chalk hills near Sparsholt Firs
Norfolk Coast Path: Cromer to SheringhamOne day
Norfolk's fairly flat countryside makes for easy hiking on lazy summer days, and the stretch of seaside path from Cromer to Sheringham is among the best walks in the county
After pottering among handsome Victorian townhouses in Cromer
passing between the hedgerows and breakwaters
with the shimmering leagues of the North Sea as your companion
The (literal) high point of the walk is Beeston Bump: a 207-foot hill that counts as Everest in these parts
looking down onto the rooftops of Sheringham
The Berkshire stretches of the River Thames inspired The Wind in the Willows: a watery world of long
Join the Thames Path at Marlow Bridge – from which Budapest's Széchenyi Chain Bridge was famously copied – then follow the current east
Look out for devious weasels in Quarry Wood on the south bank – it's said to be the inspiration for the Wild Wood
You can hop aboard a train back to Marlow at Bourne End
or carry on a little further to Cookham station
For all the fame of Broadway and Chipping Campden, the unsung southern parts offer more stirring scenery and some of the best walks in the Cotswolds
Join the Cotswold Way just outside bohemian Stroud: heading south
the escarpment soon rises over the landscape
with the Severn Estuary and the Welsh borders on the horizon as oak woods hug the slopes below
Detour to the village of Uley – its biscuit-hued houses huddled under an Iron Age hill fort – before ending your trek in the market town of Dursley
From Cam and Dursley station you can connect back to Stroud station
South Downs Way: Lewes to DitchlingOne day 7.5 miles
Lewes and Ditchling count as some of Sussex's prettiest corners
cosy pubs and cottage gardens backing onto the leafy rises of the Downs
The walk between them is correspondingly lovely – join the South Downs Way not far from Lewes
ascending the summit of Ditchling Beacon and looking out for the twin windmills at Clayton
Lewes has easy onward connections from its station
The blink-and-you'll-miss-it village of Edale is a launch pad for walks on Kinder Scout: the plateau that is the spiritual home of UK hillwalking
ascending the stone steps of Jacob's Ladder until the lakes and woods of the Dark Peak unfurl beneath you
you could continue along the Pennine Way all the way the Scottish border
but if you don't have a month going spare
another (often hard to find) path heads southeast across the moorland
following gurgling brooks back to Edale and the station
South West Coast Path: Padstow to TintagelTwo days
This stretch of the South West Coast Path walk starts out deceptively easy
with a ferry ride across the Camel estuary
from the gourmet hub of Padstow to the village of Rock
Thereafter follows two days' intensive walking along the Cornish coast at its wildest and most wondrous: look out for bobbing fishing boats at Port Isaac
nesting seabirds in the cliffs and paddling surfers beyond the breaks
Finish at Tintagel Castle: associated with King Arthur
it has towering medieval walls that rise above Atlantic tides
Private transfers can be helpful on this walk
Yorkshire Three Peaks from RibbleheadTwo days
Completing Yorkshire's holy trinity of peaks requires strong nerves
with many walkers and fell runners attempting to conquer all three in the quickest possible time
split your time in God's Own County over two days: start at Ribblehead before scaling the mighty ridge of Whernside for views of Lake District fells
then head on to Ingleborough to seek out its Iron Age hill fort
before ticking off the summit of Pen-y-ghent after breakfast and looping back to Ribblehead station
Wales Coast Path: Nefyn to AberdaronTwo days
A craggy finger of land reaching into the Irish Sea
the Llŷn Peninsula serves up a sublime (and relatively crowd-free) slice of the Wales Coast Path
where a little pub watches over a crescent of golden sand
and sea cliffs look back to the summits of Snowdonia
arriving at the village of Aberdaron at the lonely tip of the Llŷn – from here
you can see Ireland's Wicklow Mountains on a clear day
West Highland Way: Bridge of Orchy to Fort WilliamThree days
The West Highland Way is an epic 96-mile hike across Scotland: you can however tune in for the edited highlights
joining the path on the final dramatic section from Bridge of Orchy to Fort William
On the first day the windswept mountains of Glen Coe rise out of the desolate expanse of Rannoch Moor: you'll want to rest at Kingshouse before climbing up over snow-flecked summits to Kinlochleven
walk northward until Ben Nevis rears up among the treetops – the finishing line is at Fort William
For more inspiration, see our edit of the best walks in Scotland
Glyndŵr's Way: Knighton to MachynllethFive to six days
Glyndŵr's Way counts as one of the quietest long-distance walks in the UK: silent hours pass without a soul on the trail as you follow in the footsteps of the Welsh rebel leader Owain Glyndŵr
Beginning on the English border in Knighton
the route snakes through the Radnorshire Hills
before the scenery steps up a notch at Plinlimmon – the highest point in mid-Wales
The one-time Welsh capital of Machynlleth is the midpoint of the Way
but it’s also a fine place to hang up your boots – like Knighton it's served by regular rail connections
Southwest Coast Path: Charmouth to West BayOne day
The Southwest Coast Path reaches a high point at Golden Cap – claimed by some to be the loftiest cliff on the south coast of England
the whole Jurassic Coast extends before you: pebbly beaches raked by the tides
pubs nestling in the nooks of valleys and limestone cliffs stacked with fossils (sections of which are prone to periodically slipping into the sea)
It’s best climbed as part of a point-point walk from Charmouth to West Bay
passing caravan parks and patchwork farmland
with chances to peer down from the crags to see seabirds on the wing (just don’t get too close to the edge)
The Jurassic Coaster bus service links the two villages
connects to mainline trains from Dorchester
Anglesey Coast Path: Beaumaris to Red Wharf BayOne day
Snowdonia offers some of Britain’s steepest hills
and most challenging hikes – but just over the water is Anglesey: a largely flat island whose shores look admiringly back to the mountains of the mainland
Its coast is also ringed by a long-distance footpath – one of the loveliest sections leads from the pastel-hued townhouses of Beaumaris to the striped lighthouse at Pen Mon: where the uninhabited islet of Ynys Seiriol (Puffin Island) lies across the rockpools
Continue to trace the headland westward – looking out for dolphins below the cliffs – and you’ll eventually come to the shifting tides of Red Wharf Bay
where the Ship Inn is a time-honoured place for a sunset pint
Bus 50 runs from Red Wharf Bay to Beaumaris
Speyside Way: Aviemore to AberlourFive days
Monsal Trail: Bakewell to Monsal HeadOne day

"As you return, don’t forget to take a detour through the famous landscape garden to see deep hues of red

Located on the Stourhead Estate, there's plenty to keep visitors entertained on the 2,500-acre stretch of countryside.
an Iron Age Hillfort and King Alfred's Tower
According to the National Trust website
there are several stops to follow on the walking route:
On the King Alfred's Tower Walk ramblers will glimpse Stourhead Estate's lake and a Gothic Cottage

Set in Somerset
King Alfred's Tower was built between 1762 and 1779 by architect Henry Flitcroft
Despite being named after King Alfred the Great, the tower was actually built to mark King George III's ascension to the throne
as well as the end of the Seven Years' War
The tower's ties to King Alfred are instead rooted in its location as it was there that King Alfred, and his army, defeated the Danes, thus saving Anglo-Saxon England from Danish occupation
which is made from more than one million red bricks
visitors have dubbed King Alfred's tower as the real-life Rapunzel tower
Entry into the tower costs £6 for a full-paying adult and £3 for a child
King Alfred's Tower is an 80-minute drive from Bristol, and it's a 90-minute drive from Southampton
There are plenty of other things to do in the area too
including Stourhead - a Palladian house with a landscaped garden
Other nearby attractions include St Peter's Pump - a water pump that was first constructed in 1474
While the water pump was part of St Peter's Church
it was relocated to Stourhead Park by Henry Hoare in 1768
The wooded slopes have been described as "particularly lovely in autumn" with its gnarled trees and moss-covered boulders making it look like the setting for a Grimm fairytale

From brewery tours and canal boats to ghosts and ties to the witch trials and firework displays in early November, Lancaster has been named the perfect place for an autumn break

The pop artist spent much of 2019 walking across the Unites States
When Mike Posner asked the 911 dispatcher on the other end of the line if he was going to die
she did not sugarcoat her uncertainty: "All she said," Posner remembers
Posner posed the question in early August 2019 on a hot
bright day on the eastern side of Colorado
where the gentle plains of the Midwest give way to distant glimpses of the Rockies' front range
A pop singer and rapper with a few Top 40 hits and a Grammy nomination to his name
seven months removed from the release of a tormented third album he had barely bothered to promote
He was about 1,800 miles into a roughly 2,800-mile
New Jersey — which he knew via one of his earliest influences
Bruce Springsteen — with the goal of reaching Venice Beach
where he'd first considered the ambition five years earlier after happening to hear a stranger mention the endeavor
The task simply struck him as a worthy adventure
a whimsical idea that lingered on his wishlist
walking the day's first eight miles in silence in his tennis-ball-hued safety vest
he would move into the scrubby brush along the thin shoulders of State Highway 10; at some point
a man in a Dodge pickup stopped to warn him that the grasses were a rattlesnake haven and to step lightly
He offered Posner some water and carried on
volunteer paramedics rushed him to a hospital and his first round of treatment
another team airlifted Posner to a second facility
where he got more shots and spent days learning to walk again
He returned home to Michigan and slowly rebuilt his stamina by going first to the bathroom
at the spot where the rattlesnake had struck — headed west again
"When the operator told me that she didn't know if I would live, I thought, 'Well, this could be it for me.' I really got to try out how that feels — dying," says Posner, laughing now with the hindsight knowledge of how incredibly rare it is to die from a snakebite in the United States
(Around five people succumb each year.) "I got to think about the fragility of life — about how quickly this could all be over
Posner felt might be his date with mortality — was oddly apropos for the journey
the catalyst of and backdrop for Posner's trek
offering the slightly older Posner a painful and poignant reminder of what can happen when the hamster wheel of stardom spins too quickly
Those feelings form the brittle core of A Real Good Kid
almost two years to the day since his father died
Interlaced with recordings of their bedside conversations
its dozen tracks dangle at the ostensible end of Posner's rope
during "Drip," he reflects on the cyclonic turmoil of death and a break-up and bad habits
He can't contain his rage: "I worked the last 10 years
You can't tell if he's laughing madly or crying deeply
Posner's wide-eyed sentimentality flanked by the savages of love and loss
Posner says the album is his best work yet — and maybe that's why it could
During an Alaska camping trip late in 2018
he told a friend about the "existential dread" he felt when pondering the album's impending promotional cycle
"I had nothing inside me that wanted to go to a radio station and try to convince them to play my song more than Ariana Grande
I didn't want to do incessant interviews to maximize my fame and income," Posner admits
It was tantamount to "Born in the U.S.A." soundtracking Independence Day cookouts
not really — why should Posner beg for airplay with songs that exposed his marrow
He knew the time to pursue his real goal had come
he decided to tell his band they wouldn't be touring across the country because he'd be hiking across it instead
"I realized I was always going to be the guy who only talked about doing it."
Posner is mostly in competition with himself — to become a real good adult
someone he finds more meaningful than some nouveau riche pop star whose vapid hits have become shopping-mall wallpaper
He stopped smoking weed almost a decade ago and stopped drinking seven years ago; he dabbles in psychedelics if he has a problem he wants to face
"to help me come back to my life better." He has sworn off and apologized for past misogyny
(He confesses to stockpiling Plan B pills in his suitcase during "Come Home," then chastises himself
rapping "That's gross / Time to grow.") During a series of increasingly long stays in solitude at a Colorado monastery
he learned self-control and patience — walking across the country became an arduous extension of that practice
whether raising a child or learning a skill
"You can be someone who celebrates and finds glory in the tedium
or you can be somehow who abhors tedium and lives in opposition to life
undergoing physical therapy after a rattlesnake bite
overcoming grief instead of giving in to it: Posner has learned to choose the tedium
It is tempting to romanticize Posner's walk as some monastic exercise, a sylvan expedition into the heart of seclusion and self-reflection, à la Thoreau at Walden Pond or vogue forest-bathing
seeing him in dreams and then waking up to worry about his mom back home
then call them during breaks to talk it out
But the truth — as with Thoreau and forest-bathing
fans would show up to walk with Posner almost every day
Those who couldn't join him could keep constant tabs via social media and a map on his website
which his managers would update with his progress
meaning Posner slept in an RV with one of two rotating assistants who bought and cooked his food
Hiking nearly 3,000 miles is onerous and even dangerous enough
and he had the luxury of affording the extra resources to help him actually succeed
like a Game Genie slipped into an old Nintendo console
Posner performing during the Okeechobee Music Festival on March 5
while only a quarter complete the Appalachian Trail.) But the journey between the coasts is a different story
requiring a patchwork of highway shoulders
with only an occasional sojourn onto a traditional trail
Posner walked directly through Pittsburgh and into a string of countless small towns
rarely alone or more than an hour from some civilization
In journeying across the Navajo nation, a woefully impoverished region the size of West Virginia where some residents still lack electricity
he realized he would never understand the struggles of all Americans
or the complex history of persecution and promise we've built
"My conception of America was based on my life
"My conception of America was obliterated."
Posner realizes that what he's done may seem like a publicity stunt, from the Forrest Gump-worthy beard and the made-for-Hollywood rattlesnake interlude to the deep reflections on what it all means
by Posner going away for five months in music's current turbocharged release cycle
But the trip had the opposite effect: Posner's social media followers actually multiplied
as people tuned in to watch him beam through the daily hardships
Posner has never gotten more press than when he wound up in the hospital
"There is a part of me that wants to feel special
And there's an even ickier part of me that wants attention," he says
that is the very essence of a journey like Posner's: to square up with the worst aspects of oneself
And his reasons for doing it are inherently secondary to the very act of doing it — of actually walking the walk
He hopes that perseverance and the payoff of finishing give something to his fans
a spark for those who want to pursue an idea that seems impossible or absurd
Posner talks a lot about being his own hero
but it's clear he wants to be someone else's
to "the kid who will one day do a deep dive on me." When he crossed the final state line into California in early October
that mixtape he'd listened to during the walk
handing over his inspirational score for someone else's adventure
"For Mike to say I'm going to walk across America or me to say I want to cross Antarctica
'I don't know who I am going to be on the other side of that journey
"The hope is you're going to learn something about yourself."
Posner says he has learned to speak his mind and to not be so scared of conflict
given the self-reliance it takes to put one foot in front of the other six million times in six months
And he realizes his relationship with the music industry must be different now
but maybe his next move takes him to the mountains
"I want to be somebody I am proud of," Posner says
"I don't want to die living someone else's life or having these dreams I know I have the ability to make real

Obviously nobody apart from Crocodile Dundee says hello to strangers on city pavements
but in the countryside it is an open question
depending on whether you are an extrovert or an introvert – and where you live
so it would be awful if I blanked something as fascinating as an unfamiliar person
if I’m feeling less perky and pass someone who refuses eye contact
I sometimes lose my nerve and nothing – or worse
definitely nurses a culture of not greeting strangers in the countryside
I wonder if it’s derived from a taciturn Viking/Scandinavian influence: a Cornish friend who has moved to rural Sweden is exasperated by the Swedes’ reluctance to say hello
Durham and Northumberland are dazzlingly friendly
In my experience as a reporter it’s far easier to interview strangers in the north than south
surly-south divide: I find poorer places more welcoming than rich
but I suspect that most of us quickly conform to whatever everyone else is doing
The most influential force for friendliness in the countryside is not a social media campaign but a real person
My favourite antisocial artist is the great Welsh poet RS Thomas, who would raise his binoculars to his eyes and feign interest in a non-existent bird to avoid small-talk with strangers on his beloved Llyn peninsula.
On a gorgeous spring day last week I popped into Ikea for a couple of deckchairs. As I carried them to my car, there was an immense crack of thunder overhead. Presumptuous fool!
How about I return the deckchairs if we all agree to abstain from purchasing hammocks, sun-loungers, barbecues, paddling pools and everything else peddled by shopkeepers preying on our optimism? Then, if the Environment Agency can be so kind as to issue a hosepipe ban and the Met Office predict a washout, we will finally be guaranteed a scorching summer.

2,800 filed out of Curie Metropolitan High School in Chicago

In a wave across the country Wednesday morning
students voted with their feet to protest government inaction on gun control
Nearly 1 million students took part in protests
which included kindergartners through high-school seniors
a new micro-pilgrimage is offered for those wanting to walk in complete silence
But is it an experience worth shouting about
A jovial chorus of voices was fast approaching
punctuated by the excited yelps from an accompanying dog
how far you walking?” came the call from the man at the front
The two people nearest to him moved awkwardly aside
Then our leader – Abigail Rowe – approached him
clasping a sign that read: “We are on a silent pilgrimage
View image in fullscreen Photograph: Phoebe SmithAlmost at once he voluntarily lowered his voice to a whisper and bade us good luck
This latest offering – a one-day pilgrimage between the small church at Stoughton
to the historic cathedral in the centre of Chichester – was offered to give anyone
regardless of their religion or lack thereof (they very much tout their “bring your own beliefs” motto)
chance for quiet contemplation in the chaotic run-up to Christmas
It would have been tempting to talk about these ancient trees
but we all just stood and admired them in quiet reveryFor me
but I was quickly discovering that the hardest part was not being able to chat to passing walkers – which is something of a sacrilegious offence between hikers
The 15 other souls who joined me had come from as far as Mexico (via London)
the Isle of Wight and Hampshire – with a few locals thrown in for good measure
Their reasons for taking part ranged from thinking of loved ones who had recently died or were seriously ill
to coming to terms with a health diagnosis and trying to make peace with a religion that had scorned them for their sexuality
were in no way religious and simply wanted some peace in the outdoors
View image in fullscreen Photograph: Phoebe SmithNo matter what the reason
asked us to think of an intention or subject we wanted time to consider and pick up an object to carry with us to remind us of it along the way
I wasn’t sure whether to think of something big – the recent loss of a friend – or something small
such as what should I do with my hair now it’s growing out post-lockdown
But I did decide to use the spiky husk of a beech nut as a symbolic reminder
Abigail read the poem Leisure
Here more passersby were shown Abigail’s sign and reacted much the same
View image in fullscreenDown the lane … Chichester cathedral
Photograph: Phoebe SmithWe began descending the hillside to a path that took us to one of the oldest yew trees in Britain
It would have been tempting to talk about these ancient specimens
about how they were used as gathering places by druids
used to make longbows for battle by the church and – these particular ones – believed to hold the deceased souls of the Viking soldiers who were defeated here
but instead we all just stood and admired them in quiet reverie
Here a few people gave the improvised sign to indicate a toilet stop (a necessary bit of sign language quickly learned to ensure no one got left behind)
where we ate lunch in the glow of candlelight
From there it was a march towards Chichester
then a pleasant diversion into Brandy Hole Copse
wild woodland on the outskirts of the city
My thoughts kept wandering as freely as my feet
Though now it was more about my surroundings: pondering the type of fungi growing on a felled branch
or questioning the whereabouts of some particular noisy bluetits
would cross the course of an old Roman road
I thought of the many who had walked this land before us and what their reasons might have been
Then I placed my hand in my pocket and felt the prickles of the beech nut husk
but I did feel I finally had earned the time to linger with my thoughts – and my friend – for a while
and for that last half-hour I felt oddly at peace with the world
We soon arrived at Bishop’s Palace Gardens
where the wild woods were replaced with the manicured gardens of the cathedral
and the tweets of woodland birds became the raucous cries of gulls
I smiled for the friend I’d had the privilege to know and now

16 new voices began to emerge from our small crowd in unison
I looked to my fellow pilgrims and thought how odd it was to have spent six hours with a group of people without really getting to know any of them at all
we had all learned something collectively – that no matter how chaotic it gets

We also have 2 long-distance walking trails that pass through NPT;
The Wales Coast Path (WCP) is a very important part of the heritage of Wales
In Neath Port Talbot we are fortunate that the WCP passes through a rich diversity of landscapes
Due to the geography of our County Borough
two sections of Coast Path have been created through Neath Port Talbot
Although quite a short section of the All Wales Coast Path
there is much interest and variety along the two routes
difficulty and in their features of interest
For any more information, please visit the official Wales Coast Path website
The broad coastal belt that comprises the settlements of Margam
is abruptly interrupted by the soaring mountains of the South Wales Coalfields
These are deeply dissected by the Afan and Neath rivers
It is this area which the upland route for the coast path traverses
there are many superb views across the Bristol Channel
on the hill above the Cistercian abbey of Margam
the closer you look on this walk the more gems are revealed
There are a number of walking groups within the area, and details of these can be found on NPT's Physical Activity & Sport Service website
The groups all have qualified walk leaders who provide a safety element to all group activities
offering plenty of encouragement and are always looking for new members
There are a number of documents available that relate to walking and the environment around you
An estimated 50 million people were living in situations of modern slavery on any given day in 2021
according to the latest Global Estimates of Modern Slavery
approximately 27.6 million were in forced labour and 22 million were in forced marriages
and migrants — remain disproportionately affected
More than 12 million of all people in modern slavery are children
and women and girls account for over half of them (54 per cent)
Migrant workers were three times more likely to be in forced labour than non-migrant workers
More than half (52 per cent) of all forced labour and a quarter of all forced marriages can be found in upper-middle income or high-income countries
These compounding crises have led to significant disruption to employment and education
which together heighten the risk of all forms of modern slavery
particularly for those who are already vulnerable
The Global Slavery Index is a national breakdown of the extent of modern slavery in 160 countries
This section presents findings of our country-level analysis of the extent and drivers of modern slavery
together with actions taken by governments to respond to modern slavery
The 10 countries with the highest prevalence of modern slavery are:
and Europe and Central Asia — are represented in the list of countries with highest prevalence
which underscores the global reach of modern slavery
The 10 countries with highest prevalence share some political
including limited protections for civil liberties and human rights
Many of these countries are in volatile regions
which have experienced political instability
Many are home to large numbers of vulnerable people
Migrant workers comprise the vast majority of the workforce in Saudi Arabia
and Kuwait where they effectively fall under the control of employers due to the kafala (sponsorship) system and have few
will fall short of the true extent of modern slavery
and Afghanistan were among the ten countries with highest prevalence of modern slavery in the 2018 Global Slavery Index and remained in the list of countries with the highest prevalence in 2023
North Korea and Eritrea each have a high prevalence of state-imposed forced labour
While international conventions recognise that states have the power to compel citizens to work
this is limited to specific circumstances; for example
compulsory military service or obligatory work or service for citizens in emergency situations such as famine and natural disaster
A state exceeds these limits when it compels citizens to work as a punishment for expressing or acting on political views
or for the purpose of economic development
the International Labour Organization (ILO)
and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have collaborated on the development of the Global Estimates of Modern Slavery (Global Estimates)
The three organisations worked together to harmonise definitions and methodologies to provide a single baseline estimate against which progress towards ending modern slavery could be measured
Each edition of the Global Estimates is based on the best available data and information about the scale and distribution of modern slavery
The estimates are derived from multiple data sources
as no single source can adequately measure the different forms of modern slavery
the principal sources are data from nationally representative household surveys (68 forced labour surveys and 75 forced marriage surveys) and anonymised data from the Counter Trafficking Data Collaborative that is collected by IOM and its partners in the process of providing services to trafficked persons
The methodology underlying the new Global Estimates is the product of an ongoing process of refinement made possible by an improved understanding of forced labour and forced marriage and of how best to measure them
Due to the refinements in measurement and more balanced geographical coverage in data
the new Global Estimates are the most complete and comprehensive to date
the estimate is conservative as substantial gaps remain
such as countries experiencing profound and ongoing conflict
where using existing methods is difficult and dangerous
The 10 countries with the largest estimated numbers of people in modern slavery include some of the world’s most populous
and the United States (1.1 million) — account for nearly two in every three people living in modern slavery and over half the world’s population
six of these countries are G20 nations — India
The last few years have taught us that the ability to respond to modern slavery in times of crisis requires governments to continually invest in modern slavery responses and to build resilient systems that can withstand external shocks
governments in the top 10 global responses to modern slavery in 2023 have largely stagnated
criminalisation should be implemented as part of a suite of legislative protections in national legislation
few governments are taking a more holistic approach to tackle the underlying drivers of forced marriage and providing protections including access to civil protection orders
Nearly half (59 countries) of the 130 governments that provide access to public primary education are reporting lower primary enrolment rates for girls
The countries taking the least action to respond to modern slavery remain as in 2018 — Somalia
These countries continue to be characterised by conflict and/or active involvement from the government in modern slavery either through corruption and complicity or state-imposed forced labour
Those countries with some of the weakest responses have been excluded — Afghanistan
and Yemen — due to ongoing conflict and extreme disruption
State-imposed forced labour is practiced in 17 countries in the GSI
and this greatly undermines any other aspect of a government response
The figure is likely much higher — our assessment is based on legal loopholes that enable forced labour to occur and publicly available evidence that this has occurred since 2018
which prohibit migrant workers from leaving their jobs and finding employment elsewhere in the country
Tied visas are not unique to these countries
as shown by a growing hostile environment across Europe to asylum seekers fleeing persecution and discrimination
Many wealthy countries across the Index are failing in their duties to protect the most vulnerable
and Yemen have been excluded due to ongoing conflict and extreme disruption to government function
While the methodology used in this edition of the Global Slavery Index (GSI) is broadly consistent with what was applied in the 2018 edition
some changes were made to reflect updates to the methodology of the Global Estimates
new data sources for measures of vulnerability
and stronger scoring systems for assessments of government response
These changes are likely to have some impact on comparability between the 2023 and 2018 editions of the GSI and are summarised below
A detailed description of the methodology is set out in Appendix 2
Other changes in the methodology of the most recent Global Estimates were due to improvements in the statistical treatment of the underlying data.58 Most notably
an imputation model was adopted to create estimates for countries in which national surveys were not conducted
While the refinements to the Global Estimates methodology do not affect the overall comparability between the results presented in 2017 and 2022
there was an impact on the estimates of forced labour at a regional level
which is reflected in the national estimates presented in this edition of the GSI and should be considered when comparing changes in forced labour at the national level
Changes to methods of data collection due to the COVID-19 pandemic may also have had an impact on comparability
Some surveys were conducted after the emergence of COVID-19
which shifted the face-to-face mode of data collection that was used for all pre-pandemic surveys
While measures were taken to minimise and assess mode effects
this may have impacted the comparability of the prevalence estimates
The model of vulnerability to modern slavery developed for the 2018 GSI was maintained for the 2023 edition of the Index
Changes to the model instead reflected shifts in data sources
particularly in instances where data sources had been discontinued (refer to Appendix 2: Part B); as a result
the vulnerability model had to incorporate new source data for four indicators
While every effort was made to replace discontinued data sources with others measuring the same phenomena
these updates likely contributed to country-level differences in vulnerability
Every effort was made to select consistent and ongoing replacement data sources to minimise the impact on future editions of the GSI
the assessment of government responses remains broadly comparable with previous assessments used in the 2018 GSI
due to changes in both the conceptual framework underpinning this study
which outlines what constitutes a strong response to modern slavery
Extensive reviews by Lived Experience Expert Groups and our Expert Working Group led to edits to the conceptual framework
Refer to Appendix 2: Part C for more detail
specifically in relation to calculating total scores for milestones to better reflect a government’s commitment to completely achieving an activity
This signified a recent improvement to the methodology that was used in the 2018 GSI
where milestone scores reflected the number of indicators met
While the data remains comparable at the indicator level
changes at the milestone level are impacted by the new scoring system
comparing indicator ratings would be the most accurate way of understanding how much better or worse a government has performed in eradicating modern slavery between the 2018 and 2023 GSI

Later this year, Blake Shelton will become the newest country music recording artist to have their own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame inductees
Twenty years ago today, on June 5, 2003, Dwight Yoakam was honored for his extraordinary music and acting careers with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
Yoakam first moved to Los Angeles, Calif., in the late 1970s, as much for the musical influences of artists such as Clarence White, the Byrds and Gram Parsons as for the TV and film opportunities
It was while in the City of Angels that Yoakam found his signature honky-tonk sound
blending the country music he loved with the rock 'n' roll sounds that were permeating the airwaves
Buck Owens and Earl Scruggs
both of whom already had stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
joined Yoakam for his star presentation ceremony
who “in an immediate sense drew me ..
In addition to his numerous chart-topping albums and dozens of industry awards
Yoakam had already started in several blockbuster films by the time he earned his place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
along with the TV movies Roswell and When Trumpets Fade
it's his iconic music career that Yoakam remained the most focused on during his speech
“I’ve been really fortunate,” Yoakam said
“Even to have had the opportunity to have a record deal was something monumental
and obviously to have finally been signed to a recording contract by a major label
and then to actually have records become hits and sell millions and millions of records
that in and of itself is enough success to hold me for the rest of my life.”
