Texas (KVII) — When you work in law enforcement
On Friday at the campus of Perryton High School in Ochiltree County
a ceremony was held for Oklahoma Highway Patrolman Cody Creswell
as Friday was declared Cody Creswell Day for the City of Perryton
I love being from the Texas Panhandle,” said Cody Creswell
”A lot of people are like you’re from the Panhandle
his family is from here and I just felt it was appropriate to do a proclamation to have a day named after him,” said Kerry Symons
Cody Creswell with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol was honored and recognized for going above the call of duty in July of 2024
helping to reunite a young boy whom he believed was being trafficked and return him to family members in New York
“If the tables were turned or you put the boots on another person
I would want that person to drive my child through the night and get him home to me,” said Creswell
“I have enough respect and honor that if you make a promise to a child that you keep it
we would get him home to his dad and that’s what we did.”
Cody Creswell was joined by a couple of state troopers from OHP as they talked to Peryton High School students about risk and consequences and always remember what one does in life echoes into eternity
They talked about the importance of always making good decisions and saying no to drugs and alcohol
They also reiterated the importance of wearing a seatbelt while inside a vehicle
the trio of OHP members visited students at other schools in Perryton
the Lane County Sheriff's Office received a report of a suicidal subject in the Creswell area who was likely armed with a handgun
Deputies soon located the person on the second floor of a warehouse in the 33400 block of West Lane in Creswell
The person was confirmed to be armed with a handgun and made suicidal statements
Deputies and officers assigned to the Lane County Sheriff's Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) responded and spoke with the person over the next several hours
Deputies assigned to the Lane County Sheriff's Special Response Team (SRT) also responded
"The call was unique as the person had committed only a low-level misdemeanor crime
but was armed and on someone else's property," the Lane County Sheriff's Office says
"At one point the subject fired a round from the handgun toward an area inside where SRT deputies had staged earlier in the incident
Deputies remained calm and continued working towards a peaceful resolution."
It was later determined that the round was fired on accident
the person followed instructions to be safely detained and was then transported to an area hospital for further assistance
"Their name is being withheld as no criminal action was taken," LCSO stated
The Sheriff's Office thanks the Coburg and Junction City police departments
and the property owners for their assistance during this incident
If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide

The University of Georgia announced recently that it will spend nearly $116 million on renovations to Creswell Hall
a 9-floor high-rise dormitory that originally opened in 1963 as a residence hall for women
The renovations follow improvements made earlier to the Russell and Brumby Hall dorms
where UGA officials lauded the modern updates as beneficial to students
but after renovations it will have 924 beds
While Creswell Hall is one of the better-known dormitories on campus
the origin of its name is likely less well known today than it was in 1963 when its doors first opened to students
The building was named in honor of Mary Ethel Creswell
who in 1919 became the first woman to receive a bachelor’s degree from UGA
the fact a woman had graduated from UGA in 1919 apparently didn’t merit a lot of attention from university officials or the press back when it happened
Coverage of that graduation was on the front page of the June 20
The headline read: “Diplomas Presented to Almost 100 University of Georgia Men
were all named and near the end of the article in the penultimate paragraph the story noted that a Bachelor of Science (Home Economics) had been awarded to Mary Ethel Creswell
The story never mentioned this was a groundbreaking moment for UGA
The young woman was barely noticed that day
but in the coming years her career in home economics would launch her as a person of importance in the state and the university
Creswell’s graduation also opened the door for women that year
The next year 19 women graduated and in 1921
1943 edition of Red & Black student newspaper that reported on how women 25 years earlier had gained admission to the university
College Education: What is the best college in Georgia? Niche ranks UGA, Georgia Tech and more for 2025
She initially became a school teacher before attending UGA
Later she taught at the State Normal School in Athens
Department of Agriculture with supervision duties in 15 states
her career shined when in 1933 she became the first dean of the School of Home Economics
according to the UGA Special Collections Library
The Special Collections Library at UGA owns her papers that includes photographs
speeches and other documents related to her life
but she continued to be active in the community and UGA
and was buried at Rest Haven Cemetery in Monroe
a street today lined with luxury homes including the longtime residence of the late Vince Dooley
Creswell had her home designed and built about 100 years ago by the architect Fred Orr
well-known by his peers through the many homes and buildings he designed in Athens and Atlanta
The house is now owned by Carol and Rob Winthrop
“We’ve lived in the house for 42 years,” Carol Winthrop said recently
While the home was originally owned by an admired faculty member for UGA and designed by a noted architect
there is one feature at the house that attracts visitors on a yearly basis
A gingko tree marvels viewers with what Winthrop described as its “shockingly bright yellow” leaves in the autumn
Local UGA sports expert and writer Loran Smith once called it the “prettiest gingko in Athens.”
That’s something that Winthrop and her husband
“We feel it is the most beautiful tree in Athens,” she said
University Grants: Will the pause on federal grants affect UGA? How do universities use these grants
we can get a dozen calls to photograph the tree,” she said
noting that once the UGA gymnastics team posed for photographs at the tree
Many others have wanted the tree in their background as children and even UGA graduates posed for photos
Winthrop said the tree was planted in the 1920s
“The most definitive thing I’ve heard is the seedling was given to Mary Creswell by a Chinese student,” she said about the tree which is native to Asia
who retired from UGA and became knowledgeable of the university’s history
said she once read a letter written by Creswell
“I’m building a little house on a hill where I will live,” Winthrop recalled that Creswell wrote
And for 60 years a building has stood on the UGA campus
where her name is long remembered by those who have resided within its confines

The University System of Georgia Board of Regents approved a multimillion-dollar renovation of Creswell Hall
Creswell Hall was built in 1963 and is a nine-story residence hall containing roughly 958 beds for first-year students
The board approved $115.7 million to renovate the building
The project is set to be completed in the fall semester of 2028
“We’re excited to offer more than 900 updated and modernized spaces to future students through this renovation,” said Linda Kasper
“We know from our renovations of Brumby and Russell halls that students appreciate increased bathroom privacy and updated amenities
which we will continue to offer as we renovate Creswell.”
Renovating the building will be more cost-effective than “a full replacement of Creswell,” University Systems of Georgia officials said in the board’s project authorization
By doing this it is estimated that around $54 million will be saved according to a statement from UGA
The project will begin with exploratory work starting in the summer of 2025 and construction is set to begin in May of 2027

Pleasant Hill claimed its first league title since 2019
"The last time that we played them in league we were playing for pride," Pleasant Hill head coach Luke Jackson told The Register-Guard on Tuesday
I think it'll be easy for the (Pleasant Hill) guys to get up for this game (but) it's going to be a tough game
"I think either one of our teams could go a long way in this tournament
and you got to show up and play hard and it's kind of win or go home."
Jackson, who played for Creswell and won a state championship in 2000
praised the Bulldogs' strong backcourt led by 6-foot-2 senior Tyler Whitson
Whitson is averaging 18.7 points per game and 10.9 rebounds per game
The rest of the Bulldogs' squad is young with 6-5 junior Luke Bailey and 6-4 sophomore Mason Schartz adding to the brunt of the work

The Bulldogs are back in the state quarterfinals for the first time since 2023
"We're going to have to limit his (Whitson's) influence on the game," Jackson said on what will take to defeat Creswell
"They do a nice job of pushing the ball and getting early post position
And then keeping them off the offensive class and just execute at the offensive end make simple plays."
Pleasant Hill is back in the state quarterfinals for the first time since 2023
when it went two-and-out in the tournament
The Billies defeated Scio 70-35 in the state playoffs last week and are riding a 17-game winning streak

Just because we're a little bit higher I don't throw that stuff out the window."
Pleasant Hill lost by five points at Neah-Kah-Nie in the state playoffs
The Billies have the talent and experience to get to the state championship game under senior Gavin Inglish
"A lot of tears were shed after that game from the boys," Jackson said

sometimes having a little bit of a traumatic event can really springboard some great things in basketball."
