Anne Arundel County has moved closer to allowing Maryland to try to create a vibrant apartment community at the Cromwell light rail station in Glen Burnie the County Council passed an amendment to rezone approximately 16 acres at the state-owned transit hub to allow up to 44 residences per acre This was the second time the measure was brought to a vote. The council voted it down 4-3 on April 21 who represents the district encompassing the station expressing concern about a lack of community involvement Maryland transportation and housing officials who had said they would only invest in the property if it was rezoned as well as County Executive Steuart Pittman scrambled to talk with leaders in the Ferndale community surrounding the station about officials’ vision for the property The Baltimore Banner thanks its sponsors. Become one. this much is certain: Cromwell Station is a perfect spot for transit-oriented development That has never been the issue,” Smith said Thursday now urging his colleagues to vote for the amendment to rezone the property “While I still have concerns about the speed of the land use changes over the last week what gives me hope and hopefully the community some comfort Smith said he was able to bring the amendment to leaders of the Greater Ferndale Community Civic Association whose membership voted Wednesday on whether to support the proposal “The results given to me were roughly half and half,” Smith said “While they might not always agree with every decision that I make even the half that didn’t necessarily want to move forward what I am comforted with is they were involved and aware of what was going on before we made the decision.” The amendment paves the way for the state to start the process of bringing transit-oriented development to Cromwell Station State officials had told Smith they were prepared to begin the development process in the fiscal year beginning in July — but only if the property was rezoned Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld welcomed the rezoning in a statement Thursday “The Council’s action enables MDOT to begin the process of delivering a meaningful Transit Oriented-Development that builds ridership in our transit system and makes good on the planned investments in transit in Governor Moore’s recently passed transportation budget,” Wiedefeld said “We look forward to moving this forward and engaging all of the critical partners and stakeholders Under Democratic Gov. Wes Moore, the state has accelerated plans to redevelop parking lots next to its transportation hubs with apartments Officials say such projects would reduce the state’s housing shortage ease traffic by keeping cars off roads and bolster ridership of its underutilized mass transit trains The state is already in the process of developing its MARC station in Odenton with the county’s support Transit-oriented development also features prominently in Anne Arundel County planning documents which identified Cromwell Station as a promising site “If you go back into the plans that have been laid before us since about 1997 transit-oriented development has been targeted here,” said Councilwoman Allison Pickard Pickard originally moved the state-requested rezoning amendment when Smith passed on it She implored her colleagues to vote in favor of it the first time and doubled down on her arguments Thursday “If you’re going to build housing near a transit station that’s where your density will be,” Pickard said “What you should really think about is how many people are getting off the road because they choose to take the light rail all the way to Baltimore to work.” She celebrated the vote in an interview following Thursday’s meeting describing it as an “exciting time for North County.” The Cromwell Station project aligns with the county’s effort to revitalize the Baltimore-Washington Boulevard corridor in Glen Burnie “Without that 24/7 activity of residential living It will be a vibrant community,” Pickard told The Banner She is leading efforts to reimagine the Glen Burnie Town Center which is less than a mile from Cromwell Station Eventual residents of a community at the light rail will be able to walk to the town center and “have an ice cream cone The amendment would allow for up to 704 residences on the 16-acre property but Pickard said most development projects in the county only reach about 70% of the maximum allowed because of environmental regulations and other oversight Smith said he and the community were relieved to find out that the state only wanted to rezone 16 acres rather than the more than 200 acres it owns around Cromwell Forty-four units per acre on the larger site would have equated to a “little city,” he said The community’s concern about Cromwell Station largely centers on crime and safety A “healthy conversation” with Pittman left him believing the county and state “can at least mitigate some of their concern.” a Democrat who represents the western part of the county said revitalizing the area would go a long way toward reducing crime small businesses and homes around the station any public safety issues are going to be mitigated,” Hummer said “I think we all know that some of our train stations right now look like big empty parking lots that aren’t the most inviting places to be sometimes and so anything but that would be an improvement.” A final vote on the comprehensive rezoning bill that includes Cromwell Station is set for Monday night Alex Mann alex.mann@thebaltimorebanner.com Alex Mann covers Anne Arundel County for The Baltimore Banner He was a 2023 finalist for the Livingston Awards in local reporting he wrote for The Capital and for The Carroll County Times Welcome to The Banner's subscriber-only commenting community. Conway shared his frank assessment of Giuffra who served as his best man in his wedding to Kellyanne Conway how appalling is it that Trump — an outright criminal who should have gone to jail for far more than he was convicted of — is using his official power to punish lawyers for representing innocent people he doesn’t like and to deny people the very due process he’s getting And yet there’s [Giuffra’s firm] Sullivan & Cromwell and his firm should be embarrassed.” and intense portrayal of Thomas Cromwell in Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light marks the culmination of a decade-long journey Rylance reflects on revisiting Cromwell and the emotional evolution of the character Rylance also delves into Cromwell’s hyper-vigilance and vulnerabilities and the realities of his being torn between reforming the world and surviving it [Note: This interview contains spoilers related to Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light Episode 6.] Ten years have passed between your portrayals of Thomas Cromwell Did the passage of time lead you to bring anything different to him You can’t help but reveal yourself when you do anything artistic the events of the years since we made the first series and this new one have had profound effects I’ve also done a lot more film work in those years than I had done in the years previous to it But you’re talking really about the soul of artists and that keeps changing all the time What was it like for you to have such an intensity for Cromwell to have this near constant hyper-vigilance and hyper-awareness not knowing if he was like the hunted or the hunter during the run of this Cromwell carries a bit of rue and rosemary in his hands that he crunches to smell but the only thing he doesn’t remember is what he doesn’t know 900 plus pages of his thoughts and his observations Hilary [Mantel] writes that he thinks about other people Sometimes four or five pages will go by before he answers yes he will have thought all these wonderful different thoughts about things very busy and capable and saw things through and knew the income and the names and the history of all the powerful people in England there’s feelings and other things going on that are uplifting and undermining What has it been like for you to leave Cromwell behind after this long journey with him and you find something that you wish you had [In this case] there are a lot of things I’m very glad I don’t have But I wish I had his sense of self-worth and sense of authority that in itself gets transformed towards the end of his life it’s in me and I was able to find it and play it in a way that when I look at the TV series Did you have a favorite scene with Damian Lewis the last scene when we talk about [having gone] to Kent and Cromwell knows he never went to Kent I love the space he takes before and the care with which he contradicts the King’s reality There’s almost an acceptance that he’s done with me I wanted to think of Cromwell’s motives as pure In Cromwell there is his ambition and there’s some authenticity to his beliefs Can you speak a little bit about those parts of him That’s a great thing to remind me of; this is a story of a common man he really does get an opportunity to change the world and the opportunity matches the skills that he has So that’s a remarkable thing to happen in a life I only ever had a lot of responsibility when I ran Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre for ten years Initially you suffer a lot of fools because you don’t know who’s who … People come to know you more and they know your weaknesses and your strengths and you know your weaknesses and strengths And some of the mistakes you make are not easy to wash off your conscience tiny taste of what someone like Cromwell faced I was shocked by the scene when the common people have risen up in ignorance; they’re being misled His response is to bluff them until it’s winter and then we will go in and kill the leaders His teeth show at different points in this last episode If you could ask Cromwell one question what would it be sometimes he thinks he would like to marry again as it is seven years since he lost Elizabeth and his daughters but no woman would tolerate this kind of life [and] I came to feel after a month of filming that I was playing a woman within a man I feel she’s really channeling something from him I can’t imagine that this enormous amount of work she put into this was just to do with history There was something that he unlocked in her as an artist and a writer I feel like Cardinal Wolsey is at the center of this and that the love Cromwell has for Wolsey is why he collapses after seeing Dorothea I feel like we’re given some comfort—as if we’re being shown Cromwell is forgiven The Cardinal is the one who dubs him a butcher’s dog I based a certain part of [Cromwell] on my dog … The loyalty to a master who treats you well never goes away And that’s the animal basic element of this character I play Cromwell towards Wolsey and then towards the King … There’s an enormous amount of loyalty and connection [and] Wolsey is definitely the very heart of it Damian was saying [it’s true for] the King as well both of them very tied up in loyalty to Wolsey and regret about what happened to Wolsey in their different ways Perhaps that’s partly why the King is unable to forgive Cromwell I certainly [found] it incredibly hard to act that [final] scene I feared when I walked onto the platform and saw [the executioner] drunk and then a crowd of people who despise you and are spitting at you and hurling insults [He’s] not going to give you what you want I suspect [Cromwell] was made of harder stuff But what’s another beautiful thing I was seeing today that Hilary wrote very early on in the book with everything that is mined from the earth or forged everything that is made molten or wrought or given a cutting edge … He has an affinity with the edge of that ax Do you have anything that you might want to share with audiences whose hearts are utterly broken because of Cromwell’s end Maybe your brother or your sister is your boss … Or  you’re dealing with prime ministers and presidents and state if you can decipher and imagine what [he] might have done differently that would’ve meant that he didn’t get his head cut off but … a good thing I think would well cheer his spirit up More of Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light Sign up to get the latest news on your favorite dramas and mysteries get updates on your favorite dramas and mysteries Learn how to describe the purpose of the image (opens in a new tab) Leave empty if the image is purely decorative Subscribe to the free MASTERPIECE newsletter for updates on shows like Miss Austen No, thanks By: 6:30 am on April 15 Permits have been filed for a 13-story residential building at 1408 Cromwell Avenue in Mount Eden Located between Macombs Road and West 170th Street the lot is near the 170th Street subway station Shaya Seidenfeld of MZS Realty is listed as the owner behind the applications The proposed 121-foot-tall development will yield 61,744 square feet designated for residential space most likely rentals based on the average unit scope of 671 square feet The concrete-based structure will also have a 25-foot-long rear yard but no accessory parking Kao Hwa Lee Architects is listed as the architect of record Demolition permits have not been filed yet An estimated completion date has not been announced Subscribe to YIMBY’s daily e-mail Follow YIMBYgram for real-time photo updates Like YIMBY on Facebook Follow YIMBY’s Twitter for the latest in YIMBYnews ga('send', 'event', 'beautyofblock', 'Impression', 'https://newyorkyimby.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Standard_336x280-100-2.jpg', { nonInteraction: true }); The Mirror and the Light opened its first episode with a shot of Cromwell and the arrested Boleyn in a boat on its way to the Tower of London where the queen would live out the rest of her days before her beheading The finale recreated that same shot on the river only this time with Cromwell as the incarcerated passenger “Cromwell was very conflicted when he took Anne Boleyn to the tower at the end of the finale episode of the first series of Wolf Hall He felt it was a real waste,” director and showrunner Peter Kosminsky tells TV Insider “She was an incredibly talented person who saw eye to eye with him politically in so many ways But King Henry VIII had made it clear to him that it was him or her… So that seat in that boat the seat that Anne Boleyn occupied heading for the tower felt to Cromwell like he was just inches away from being in that seat himself And here we are four years later at the start of the final episode of the second and final series where Cromwell does indeed find himself in that seat in the boat So I tried to recreate it so it looked almost identical to the shot that we had used for Anne in that first series 10 years ago just so that the parallel for the audience and the uncomfortable parallel for Cromwell himself would be at its most acute.” This was just the perception of Cromwell’s actions and not his intent as he tried to explain in a gripping 15-minute interrogation scene in the finale The series ended with Cromwell’s execution the scene switched to a more peaceful sight: the garden of the home at which Cromwell had hoped to live out his retirement Kosminsky explains the decision to end the series here with no resolution following Cromwell’s execution Mark Rylance as Thomas Cromwell (Playground Television UK Ltd) “It would’ve been very tempting to see what happened afterwards,” Kosminsky says “And I did allow the audience to just glimpse a couple of little moments by visiting some of the characters as Cromwell is walking to the scaffold is built on the idea that we see everything from Cromwell’s point of view It always enters the room with him tracking in on his shoulder normally It’s a point of view and reaction-style of shooting — on his shoulder The audience never has the advantage of Cromwell It never learns something that he doesn’t know the audience is in the dark trying to guess what’s going on in the same way he is if the whole thing is told from his point of view Cromwell didn’t go down without a fight. The climax of the finale was the interrogation scene featuring Rylance, Timothy Spall‘s Duke of Norfolk, Alex Jennings‘ Stephen Gardiner, Tom Mothersdale’s Richard Rich, and Harry Melling‘s Thomas Wriothesley Cromwell entered this battle of wits assuming he would be exonerated in the end Henry’s refusal to see Cromwell in person paired with a lack of action in response to his letter begging for mercy Kosminsky says the interrogation scene “was about 25 pages of script” filmed in just two days They originally carved out three days to film this climactic scene but an illness among the cast forced them to cut that time down all those actors sitting around that table needed to run unbroken probably eight or 10 times about 16 pages of dialogue and complicated dialogue with pace and attack and interrogation,” Kosminsky reveals There was no reshooting for the first 16 pages on day two bearing in mind that you’ve only just got the evening before to learn it,” Kosminsky explains noting that these are stage actors who are very good at remembering dialogue “but the detail of the learning happens the night before So they had to retrieve what they’d done the previous day and do another eight pages [on day two] It was one of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen in 45 years of program making.” The interrogation scene is meant to depict Cromwell’s descent from the steely figure with an endless supply of bite into a man accepting defeat. “What I really like about the scene is, you see how far Thomas has traveled from when we first met him,” Peter Straughan, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Conclave who wrote every single Wolf Hall episode “Because he was always fast on his feet He was always clever and he could always out-talk and out-dance anyone else Every time they throw an accusation at him But there’s also this sort of weariness almost bordering on despair that creeps in.” “Peter [Kosminsky] and I talked about this I always felt in the end that it’s Cromwell that decides that Cromwell won’t go any further rather than the world,” Straughan adds “One of my favorite moments in the last episode is when he says he sort of breaks off the argument and says what are you going to do when I’m not here anymore What’s going to happen to Britain when I’m not here anymore When it’s just you and the French will use you and he’s not so much worried about saving his own life at that point He’s thinking about all the work he’s done being undone by these idiots who he already knows in a way are going to have victory over him.” Straughan sees a parallel between Cromwell and Boleyn in this interrogation Cromwell beginning this scene with the belief he’ll survive is like Boleyn “looking back over her shoulder as she walks to the scaffold,” as seen in the Wolf Hall finale and The Mirror and the Light‘s opening scene “Cromwell says it’s because she still thinks even now that he might come and save her,” Straughan explains and there’s “a little bit of Cromwell” who hopes the same for himself I can stop this,’ because he’s sentimental in a way And also [Henry] values loyalty even though he cuts people off.” Damian Lewis as King Henry VIII (Playground Television UK Ltd) According to Straughan, Cromwell knew hope was lost when “Rafe [Thomas Brodie-Sangster] reads the letter to Henry and Henry says don’t repeat it again.’ Cromwell thinks Cromwell is one of Henry’s closest confidantes up until the disastrous failure of a marriage to Anne of Cleves (Dana Herfurth) Lewis says that “like all powerful people they like having someone around them that speaks truth to that power until they don’t like it anymore And that’s when they’re at their most dangerous He has loved Cromwell…He’s really the only person who actually speaks directly to Henry and is prepared to contradict him So there is a respect and a love there.” Then why couldn’t Henry show his friend mercy He becomes increasingly paranoid and worried about England’s place in the world and the Tudor Dynasty’s place in the world He’s elevated him so he can bring him down I think that’s how Henry thinks.” One of Lewis’ final scenes as the infamous monarch is when Rafe reads him Cromwell’s final plea He’s sorrowful and tearful hearing Cromwell nobly beg for mercy Lewis thinks Henry came very close to doing so “It’s not dissimilar to the way he felt when he heard about Wolsey’s death or Wolsey being cast out north Cromwell pleads with his king and his master and despite Wolsey’s warnings has almost dared call him a friend at times And I think he very nearly pardons him in that moment And I don’t think he can change his mind once he’s set his course.” Alex Jennings as Stephen Gardiner and Timothy Spall as Duke of Norfolk (Playground Television UK Ltd) Viewers hear Rafe tell Cromwell in voiceover that he thought he saw a glimmer of hope that Henry would choose mercy The audience sees this look on Henry’s face as Rafe is describing it Lewis says the meaning of that look is “for the audience members to interpret it for themselves,” but “he loved this man “It is a sympathetic portrayal of Cromwell through Hilary Mantel’s books but this is the man who tore down abbeys and the great houses and monasteries in Henry’s name and went pillaging and marauding and redistributed a lot of that stuff to his friends and kept some of it for himself,” Lewis continues “He has been unbelievably loyal to Henry He talks about being Cardinal Wolsey’s dog but he’s got closer to the king than that it’s a very complex moment for Henry.” No matter how many Tudor-era tales get adapted onscreen no matter how much room for sympathy there is or isn’t for these powerful men one constant truth about this time period remains true: very few people get close to King Henry VIII and live to tell the tale As Norfolk says at the end of the interrogation scene it’s foolish for anyone to think they’ll be any different That’s Straughan’s favorite moment of the scene ‘You think you’re so invaluable We’re his tools.’ And he says it almost with this fellow feeling,” Straughan explains “I really love that moment because Norfolk understands how there’s no room in the court really for the human And Cromwell in the end is brought down by the human He’s loyal to his master’s memory He exposes himself to danger unnecessarily because he’s human and because he still has human values.” And that’s his “fatal error.” Sign Up Copyright © 2022 ALM Media Properties, LLC. But according to reporting by Law.com S&C says Giuffra was brought into the matter by a PW partner: According to a source familiar with the matter a Paul Weiss partner reached out to a friend soon after Trump signed the executive order against Paul Weiss the Paul Weiss partner—whose identity is not clear—asked for Farley’s help in securing a meeting with the White House (Farley at one point was considered a contender to be Trump’s choice to chair the Securities and Exchange Commission.) Farley offered to contact Giuffra but only after the Paul Weiss partner confirmed with him that Karp had approved the request to ask for Giuffra’s help Giuffra’s involvement in this matter prior to March 19th,” which was when the negotiations between PW and Trump began Patriots CEO Robert Kraft was also involved in the March 19th deal for reasons that remain unclear Karp and Giuffra got to talking they hashed out the Very Important™ national security and discrimination issues that were the facial justification for the Paul Weiss EO During the March 19 Oval Office meeting between Trump and Karp The president asked who was the better lawyer between the two Giuffra responded by saying he was the better golfer Trump and Giuffra proceeded to talk about golf for about 15 minutes according to a source familiar with the events Karp, Burck, Giuffra and Epshteyn were left by Trump to hammer out the terms of the deal. And like every deal that’s totally legit, not at all sketchy and not subject to the whims of an egotistical bully The entire situation has left many wondering what role Giuffra really has in the administration Giuffra also answered questions from his partners about his role in the PW deal once that became public But he says that the first deal was the only he was involved in A Sullivan & sparsely used parking lot at Glen Burnie’s Cromwell light rail station looks like opportunity for Maryland officials who are prepared to invest state dollars to transform the largely vacant space into a bustling housing and commercial development Anne Arundel County officials agree with the state’s vision — mostly But the failure of a recent rezoning amendment before the County Council to allow greater housing density on the approximately 16-acre state-owned site abutting the end-of-the-line station puts the project at a crossroad While state officials wouldn’t say they’d abandon the project if the County Council doesn’t change the zoning Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman said in an interview that Democratic Gov Wes Moore’s administration came to the county with hopes of bringing so-called “transit-oriented development” to Cromwell Station but that the state typically invests money “where the zoning is friendly.” Pittman said the “the state will not prioritize that site” for transit-oriented development if the county doesn’t rezone it to its highest density mixed-use category And in a recent letter to Councilman Pete Smith Wiedefeld and Housing Secretary Jake Day said: “This can only occur if the site is rezoned.” Under Moore, the state has ramped up plans to redevelop parking lots next to its transportation hubs with apartments ease traffic by keeping cars off roads and bolster ridership of its underutilized trains Transit-oriented development also features throughout Anne Arundel’s general development plan with Cromwell Station identified specifically The state approached Anne Arundel about changing the property’s zoning to mixed-use urban near the end of the county’s comprehensive rezoning process for the area encompassing the station a Democrat who represents the northernmost part of the county had first right of refusal to introduce a rezoning amendment “I wasn’t necessarily enthusiastic about the request coming at the last minute,” said Smith adding that he didn’t have an opportunity to discuss the proposed change with leaders of the Ferndale community around the station Smith said he wants mixed-use development at Cromwell Station but he’s not sure it should be the highest density — adding that the community should have a say “I was surprised and a little shocked,” said Councilwoman Allison Pickard a Democrat who represents the district just south of Smith’s We want to be able to take advantage of this moment in time.” Pickard eventually introduced the amendment It came up for a vote at the council’s April 21 hearing Pickard said she was advocating for her constituents some of whom live within a quarter of a mile from Cromwell Station “The community has already waited two decades to see an investment from their government a Democrat who represents the Annapolis area urged Smith to vote for the amendment due to the county’s housing shortage and on behalf of “the people who don’t have an affordable place to live who are living two to three generations in a single-family home.” “We may not have another opportunity like the one that’s before us if we wait,” Rodvien told Smith “This is why we’re elected to make the decisions at the time they’re presented to us when we can’t have the extended discussions we might like to have.” “This is what the constituents that I have been communicating with have asked me to do,” Smith said “Those folks that are in there adjacent to this property who will be impacted in the Linthicum area all they’re asking for is a few months to have this conversation.” with Smith voting no along with the council’s three Republican members Smith said he left the door open for the state to have the zoning changed by an administrative hearing officer an administrative hearing officer must find that the council made a mistake in the comprehensive rezoning process or that the community around the property has changed The properties surrounding Cromwell Station are being rezoned the way the state wants a Democrat who represents western Anne Arundel said voting down the amendment was shortsighted and it would be difficult to get an administrative hearing officer to approve a zoning change “Because he would see that our legislative intent was we voted down the legislation,” she said “This is an area that impacts the economic growth and health of the whole county it’s not an individual neighborhood or something,” Hummer said “We have an obligation as council members to consider our own districts but also the bigger picture of the county as a whole so that means looking at what’s best for the long-term economic and social growth of the county.” Pittman’s administration arranged a meeting for Smith and officials from the state departments of transportation and housing and community development saying the state laid out its plans for the community engagement that “the council member is rightly requesting.” Weidefeld and Day said that developers submitting bids for the project would have to submit a community engagement plan outlining how they would “meaningfully engage” with residents Wiedefeld and Day said it typically takes three to four years from a project’s inception to the start of construction Their agencies were prepared to move forward on Cromwell Station in the fiscal year beginning in July Smith told The Banner that there’s agreement “that property should be some kind of mixed use.” “I just want to make sure Ferndale feels like they’re being heard and we’re not going to do anything in that area that’s not brought to their attention,” Smith said He said he reached out to community leaders for a virtual meeting to discuss a potential amendment to change the zoning Thursday’s council meeting for Pittman’s budget address is the last chance to amend the bill portray the shocking downfall of Thomas Cromwell (Mark Rylance) as precipitated by his selection of Anne of Cleves (Dana Herfurth) as Henry's fourth wife Cromwell had been dicing with disaster (aka the King’s whims) for years in failing mental and physical health ever since his 1536 jousting accident had become notoriously vindictive and unstable he was grieving for Jane Seymour (Kate Phillips) and still desperate for more sons to ensure the succession.  now related to the throne with his son married to Bess Had Cromwell overstepped in his intensely emotional relationship with Henry’s daughter Mary (Lillit Lesser) Cromwell was massively influential and rich after years of shrewd deals and property purchases The shorthand version of the fall of Thomas Cromwell is that Henry VIII humiliated by marriage to the German princess the chronology of events in 1540 clearly indicates the volatility of Cromwell’s relationship with his King But according to historian Diarmaid MacCulloch it was much more their foreign policy mishaps that led to both Wolsey’s and Cromwell’s downfalls:  the trigger for downfall was failure in foreign policy Wolsey had found it impossible to persuade a pope intimidated by Charles V to annul the long-standing marriage of Charles’s aunt Catherine of Aragon to a selfish king of England the problem was his understandable inability to deal with Henry VIII looking a gift horse from Cleves in the mouth ... The reasons are locked for ever in the mystery that is Henry VIII; no one else could see much wrong with her Cromwell was negotiating a “Two-Princess Deal” matching the Cleves marriage with a bid to marry the Princess Mary to Philip a German prince with similar credentials to those of Cleves The Duke arrived in England at the same time as Anne of Cleves and kissed Mary publicly in the garden of the abbot of Westminster The two royal marriages should have addressed the European balance of power dominated by France and the Holy Roman Empire which was generally regarded by the continent as that of a small She held a rank below that of the King and his daughters She spent Christmas of 1541 at Hampton Court as the royal family’s guest.  For a woman with no prior knowledge of English culture or pastimes, she adapted remarkably well. Marillac, French Ambassador to the English court, wrote in 1540, quoted in Historic Royal Palaces: "Madame la Cleve has a more joyous countenance than ever and passes all her time in sports and recreations."  As for the poor teenager who followed Anne of Cleves she was not nearly as lucky or as savvy in handling her situation Katherine Howard (Summer Richards) was all of 17 when she was married off to Henry by Norfolk (Timothy Spall taking over the role from the late Bernard Hill) cementing his takeover as "the second most powerful man in England" now that Cromwell was out of the way  It was a disaster of epic proportions had well recognized long before it occurred she was ill-prepared to have her previous lover show up at the Palace demanding a position But Katherine's downfall started when she found herself sleeping with Thomas Culpepper who history suggests was a sexual predator and a rapist Whether or not she was seduced by Culpepper or the two had an instant love at first sight affair is a matter left to those who dramatize history it was merely a matter of time before it all came to light and all three wound up on the headsman's block Katherine's beheading pushed him out of favor and it wasn't long before he was plotting against the king and his new wife Katherine Parr by teaming up with the Seymours (now also out of favor since their daughter had the temerity to die from childbirth) by marrying his widowed daughter Henry VIII died less than a year later; however he remained imprisoned until Mary freed him Stephen Gardiner likewise fell from favor along with Norfolk after the Katherine Howard marriage he wasn't imprisoned in the tower until he was found to be the principal architect of framing Parr's childhood friend and confidante in an ill-advised attempt to convince Henry to behead yet another wife got sent to the Tower only to be saved by Henry VIII's untimely death but elevated to the position of her Lord Chancellor and there was surprisingly little in the way of retaliation from the King toward his household Rather than this being a deliberate act of mercy by Henry it was more likely that once Cromwell was destroyed and created a scenario where it wasn’t his fault anyway already making an impression at Court as a gentleman of the Privy Chamber was left in the dark about his uncle’s arrest Wriothesley called him for some master secretary business minutes before the Privy Council Members started their attack on Cromwell Sadler continued a brilliant career of over fifty years' service to the Tudors despite a quick stay in the Tower after Cromwell’s arrest the son of the steward to the Marquess of Dorset he later discovered that Ellen’s previous husband making Ralph’s children illegitimate and his marriage bigamous (Given the vagueness of Tudor marriage law and practices this is something that may have happened quite frequently.) Sadler used his influence to legitimize his marriage and children through an act of Parliament Gregory Cromwell (Charlie Rowe taking over for Tom Holland who was too busy getting engaged to Zendaya to return) was Thomas Cromwell’s only son He was sent away to school in Cambridge after his mother and two sisters died of the sweating sickness in 1529 and played the lute and virginals (an early keyboard instrument) He married the widowed sister of Jane Seymour The couple moved into Launde Abbey in Leicestershire in 1538 to escape the plague.  Gregory became involved in a serious and scandalous liaison for which he was ordered to perform a public confession and penance of distributing loaves one Sunday after Mass in Chichester Cathedral and the young couple were rapidly relocated to Leeds Castle in Kent where he became one of the two MPs for the county He was made Baron Cromwell of Oakham in 1540 (not to be confused with his father’s title of the same year Baron of Wimbledon and  Earl of Essex) He died in 1551 in another outbreak of sweating sickness Richard Cromwell (Joss Porter) was born Richard Williams in Wales in 1510 and was the nephew of Thomas Cromwell After working for Stephen Gardner (Alex Jennings taking over from the booked and busy Mark Gatiss) he joined his uncle’s household at Austin Friars and was introduced at court He was active with his uncle in suppressing the Pilgrimage of Grace and in the dissolution of the monasteries he distinguished himself at an international jousting tournament at Westminster where he defeated a pair of French opponents on the second day his most notable and surprising living descendant is actor Danny Dyer One could argue that Henry VIII’s fate is well known and his final wife was Katherine Parr (who despite being around as Lady Latimer and having a decent-sized role in the novels but they were married long enough that he decided she was a terrible mistake and threw her in the Tower she was lucky he died before the headsman could get around to her.  She received £7,000 per year to support herself as promised, and Edward VII allowed her to return home to Chelsea Manor where she eventually married the love of her life and Seymour wound up being executed for treason under Edward VII but also as collateral damage in a plot that was aimed at getting Elizabeth tried and convicted for the same she testified that Seymour was a sexual predator Edward VII did not rule long; Mary I succeeded him in 1553 and ruled for five years before Elizabeth became England’s first great queen upon the pretexts of trivial faults that [Cromwell] had committed they had laid several false accusations on him by which [the king] been made to put to death the most faithful servant he ever had.” Perhaps that small revenge of knowing he regretted his actions is enough Both Wolf Hall and Wolf Hall: The Mirror & the Light are now streaming with PBS Passport on the PBS app and via the PBS Masterpiece Prime Video Channel Writer Janet Mullany is from England, drinks a lot of tea, and likes Jane Austen, reading, and gasping in shock at costumes in historical TV dramas. It is so beautifully made it's breathtaking." But where do sumptuous production values end Such questions have accompanied Mantel's project from the start Chief Historian at Historic Royal Palaces and author of 2015's Thomas Cromwell: The Untold Story of Henry VIII's Most Faithful Servant tells the BBC about the impact Mantel's first Tudor novel I was taught that Henry VIII's chief minister was a grasping Then I read Wolf Hall and it gave such a different perspective… I was inspired to write a non-fiction biography so that I could find out where the truth lay."  Borman discovered a sharp-witted and enterprising Cromwell and realised just how thorough the novelist had been in mining primary sources for innumerable details she took artistic license when she needed to," Borman says "Notably in downplaying Cromwell's role in Anne Boleyn's execution and in making him something of a heartthrob at court." who teaches early modern history at Vanderbilt University "There are a great many popular novels about the Tudors I can't bear to read," she tells the BBC "Mantel's work is the gold standard – well-researched and rooted in history to paint a largely sympathetic portrait of Cromwell she does sidestep some crucial matters." Rogers notes that when King Henry wanted to rid himself of his second wife implicated her in serious crimes – adultery with five men including her own brother Cromwell most certainly supervised his torture and yet in the taut and chilling Bring Up the Bodies Literary critic and biographer Megan Marshall author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Margaret Fuller: A New American Life both a biographer and novelist "will pluck out what concerns us and what concerns the audience… although the novelist likely has a more conscious agenda than a biographer" Mantel's view of Cromwell is inevitably coloured by her personal perspective of the Catholic faith she was brought up in nor her scorn for the representation of Cromwell and his staunchly Catholic nemesis Sir Thomas More in Robert Bolt's play A Man for All Seasons both ruthless and underhanded in his methods and later venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church executed for refusing to swear an oath recognising the monarch as the supreme head of the Church in England and faithfulness to the dictates of his own conscience resonated amid the counter-culture of the 1960s "I think that [More] portrayal was the least successful bit of Wolf Hall."  Mantel is simultaneously rehabilitating Cromwell does she not give readers a Cromwell that fits the 21st Century pointing out that writer and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda recast Founding Father Alexander Hamilton in a similar way scrappy guys who come from nothing," says Rogers to audiences preoccupied by the structural barriers – be they based on class wealth or gender – that prevent people today from flourishing "Henry VIII's court was far from being a meritocracy: most of its members were blue-blooded nobles and the top positions were practically hereditary the son of a blacksmith from a seedy part of London and he takes the court – and its king – by storm It's a story as dramatic as it is seductive." • How History got Henry VIII wrong • Did a gay affair spark a 14th Century royal crisis? • America's most vilified First Lady  he said that "the one thing she played down… is the religion" He added: "Perhaps for a modern novel-reading audience Historical fiction may indeed reveal as much about the time it is written in, as the time it is written about. Mantel referred to this duality in her Reith Lectures on the craft, presented for the BBC in 2017 along with the many challenges of weaving fiction out of fact "The pursuit of the past makes you aware of your own fallibility and inbuilt bias," she declared It's in the gaps in the official record that a writer of fiction can do her most valuable work "it was with relish for his company." It is reported that it took several swings of the axe to sever Cromwell's head from his body It was later displayed on a pike atop London Bridge before he was buried in the Tower's Chapel of St really) his oftentimes enemies Thomas More and Anne Boleyn The Mirror & the Light handles Cromwell's death more gracefully to the series' emotional core rather than focus on the grisly truth of what most likely happened Cromwell's last speech is not a desperate appeal to a powerful man who has turned his back on him (That plea would have fallen on deaf ears anyway busy marrying his fifth wife at the precise moment Cromwell died.)  it is an apology to the one who loved him best and whose loss shaped the bulk of his life That this Cromwell is speaking solely to a Wolsey that only he can see is genuinely moving as is the show's decision to imagine his last moments as ones of peace as bees buzz in the sunshine of Launde Abbey's gardens or the horror reflected on the crowd's faces at whatever happens next Is it a better ending than the historical Cromwell deserved particularly given the pivotal role he played in orchestrating Anne's death Is it one that it's still a relief to say that this particular fictional version got Both Wolf Hall and Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light are now streaming with PBS Passport on the PBS app and via the PBS Masterpiece Prime Video Channel Lacy's love of British TV is embarrassingly extensive but primarily centers around evangelizing all things Doctor Who, and watching as many period dramas as possible Digital media type by day, she also has a fairly useless degree in British medieval literature, and dearly loves to talk about dream poetry, liminality, and the medieval religious vision.
