a privately-owned renewable energy company
has announced the commencement of operations at Crossett Solar Park
a 132 MW solar PV facility located in Ashley County
The project is the second solar PV plant to be brought into operation by Cubico in the past 12 months and takes the total capacity of Cubico’s operational portfolio in the US to over 800 MW
alongside a further 2 GW of greenfield development pipeline
Crossett has completed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Google
which will supply electricity to support its operations in the Midwestern US
New and existing data centres brought online or expanded to support growth in the technology sector will require several GW of additional power generation capacity over the next few years
creating substantial growth opportunities for renewable energy developers
This agreement was facilitated through LevelTen Energy’s Accelerated Process (LEAP™)
which was co-developed by Google and LevelTen Energy to make sourcing and executing clean energy PPAs more efficient
and contributes to Google’s ambitious 2030 goal to run on 24/7 carbon-free energy (CFE) on every grid where it operates
the tax equity financing for Crossett Solar Park was successfully closed with Greenprint Capital
one of the largest utility scale projects in the state of Arkansas
commenced commercial operations in September 2024
Following the completion of the Delta’s Edge solar farm in Mississippi
Crossett becomes Cubico’s second operational project connected to the midcontinent independent system operator (MISO)
one of the largest regional transmission networks in the US and an important growth market for the business
Cubico’s expansion into emerging renewable markets like Arkansas highlights the exciting potential for growth across the US
With Arkansas generating 1200 GWh of solar power in 2023
the state is primed to accelerate its renewable energy transition
By establishing a strong foundation in these regions
Cubico is well-positioned to drive meaningful progress toward a cleaner
commented: “With the successful launch of Crossett Solar Park
our team continues to demonstrate its capability in delivering high-quality renewable energy projects while actively developing a strong greenfield pipeline
“We are delighted to partner with Google to provide their data centre campuses in the Midwest with carbon-free energy from one of our assets
This Power Purchase Agreement highlights the crucial role of clean energy projects in sustainably powering data centres as the demand from AI and machine learning grows across America and beyond.”
“This partnership with Cubico will bring new carbon-free energy online from its Crossett solar facility in Arkansas to support our operations in the Midwest – helping power our data centres that provide digital tools and services around the world,” said Amanda Peterson Corio
“This agreement is another strong example of how our scalable procurement approach is transforming the way the industry buys and sells clean energy
which is accelerating the development of carbon-free electricity and the jobs that come with that.”
added: “We are thrilled to have partnered with Cubico on the Crossett Solar Park
The expertise and dedication of the Cubico team were instrumental in bringing this pioneering renewable energy project to fruition
The Inflation Reduction Act has enabled us to form innovative tax equity partnerships like this one
facilitating the monetisation of tax credits through their sale to corporate taxpayers
we’ve unlocked new financing mechanisms that support the growth of renewable energy projects nationwide.”

President Donald Trump’s proposed tariff plan threatens to push these fragile systems over the brink
As a rehabilitation nurse working in inpatient care
I see firsthand how supply chains affect patients
The wheelchair that doesn’t arrive on time
The splints that cost 40% more because they come from abroad
These aren’t just policy problems — they are clinical ones
And with the president threatening a blanket 10% tariff on nearly all imported goods
This isn’t just bad economics — it’s risky
And it’s especially reckless in a state like Iowa
where rural hospitals from Sioux City to Davenport already struggle with thin margins
Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman recently warned that these tariffs could shrink the U.S
But even that may understate the human cost
front-line clinicians and patients pay the price
Unlike large health systems or multinational corporations
small rural hospitals can’t simply absorb the cost — they cut staff
Even more alarming, Trump allies have floated the idea of capital controls — including forcing foreign holders of U.S
Treasury bills to convert short-term debt into long-term investments
That’s economic brinkmanship bordering on sovereign default
debt would rattle global markets and destabilize the financial foundation for everything from Medicare reimbursement to emergency preparedness
That’s why Sen. Chuck Grassley deserves credit for co-sponsoring the bipartisan Trade Review Act of 2025
which would restore essential checks and balances
The bill would require the president to notify Congress before imposing new tariffs and allow lawmakers to terminate them after a 60-day review
This is more than just smart policy — it’s constitutional balance
Joni Ernst to join her colleague in defending Iowa’s economy
and the integrity of our government’s financial commitments
Trade policy may seem distant from the bedside
it determines whether we have the supplies needed to heal patients
and the economic stability to protect our most vulnerable
Careless tariffs are more than a tax — they’re a threat to public health

students and families that they had gotten approval from the state fire marshal that the building was safe to reopen
Much of the first floor of the grade 5-8 school was impacted by floodwaters overnight last Wednesday into Thursday as water from the nearby Crossett Brook breached utility equipment between the brook and the school driveway
Water made its way through underground conduit pipe into the building where it spread through seven classrooms
school office and other spaces on the first level
School officials said it did not reach the gymnasium
Remediation contractors have been at the school since Thursday morning and will continue their work as classes resume Tuesday
Part of that effort will include running equipment to address and monitor air quality
Some classes will be moved to use space different from their usual classrooms
Parents of those students were to be notified with an additional email message from the principals
The full letter sent out Monday afternoon is below
We are pleased to report that school will resume for Crossett Brook students and staff on Tuesday
The school district received notice from the state fire marshal at this afternoon giving approval for students to occupy the building
this was an unexpected and very significant flooding incident involving multiple classrooms and building systems
Our custodial/maintenance staff as well as flood remediation contractors have been working around the clock since last Thursday and have made significant progress on the cleanup efforts
While there is still work that will continue over the next few months
we are in a position that we can safely resume educational activities for students
environmental equipment to ensure a safe environment is operating in impacted areas and ongoing testing will occur to ensure good air quality
It has been necessary to relocate some classrooms as a result of the damage and restoration work that is necessary
If your child’s classroom has been impacted
you will receive a separate email later this afternoon which will provide additional information
We appreciate your patience and understanding over the past four days
We will provide additional information in the coming weeks when necessary
March 7, 2025 Editor’s note: Below is a communication from Harwood Superintendent Mike Leichliter and Crossett Brook Middle School Co-Principals Duane Pierson and Jen Durren with an update following Thursday’s flooding at the school.
We are making progress on the cleanup efforts
but the building will not be safe for students and staff by Monday
We will need to close school again on Monday
We are hopeful that we will be able to get students back to school next week
but we ask for your continued cooperation and patience
but it is important to emphasize that this was an unexpected and very significant flooding incident
Our schools have experienced extensive flooding in the past
Pierson was the principal at Moretown during Hurricane Irene
Here are some lessons that we have learned that may be helpful to all families:
The Five S’s of School Flooding - prior to getting back to school
Given this is an on-going incident - building access is very limited at this point until we can determine when an appropriate window exists for staff to access the school
both for our maintenance crew and safety concerns.
All Systems must be tested - and ready to work
All spaces must be dried out - monitored for moisture
Determining changes needed in spaces to support learning as we go forward
documentation of school - classroom and personal belongings
Teamwork is essential more than ever as we share spaces and materials
initial days will be applied for a waiver from the state
continuous feedback and adjustment to plans
Some admin staff roles may be adjusted to accommodate a different workload
How can community members help… and when will we know
Accepting that there will be things that we can change and control and things we cannot - and accepting that this is the way it is
Know that this will impact some more than others
Understand that everyone wants to help
We assure you that everyone is working with the utmost urgency and understand the challenge of these circumstances
We will provide an update again on Monday.

Iron Chef 8th grade team: (left to right) Evelyn Andrus
Teams of sixth- and eighth-grade students from Crossett Brook Middle School are headed to this weekend’s Jr
competition at the Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction.
In its 17th year, Jr. Iron Chef Vt. is run by Vermont Afterschool
which describes itself as a program “dedicated to strengthening programs
and transforming communities so that all Vermont youth are active
The competition tasks middle and high school teams with discovering unique
and simple ways to incorporate local food into school cooking
Each team creates its own one-dish vegetarian and nut-free recipe – desserts and snacks are not allowed.
Middle school teams and high school teams are judged separately
Teams have 90 minutes to cook and plate their dishes
all chefs must step away from their stations and raise a flag to indicate that they are finished.
There are three awards given: the Lively Local award
which looks at the local ingredients included in the dish and how well they were incorporated; the Crowd-Pleaser award to the dish that “best incorporates color
and taste,” according to the guidelines; the Mise in Place award
which translates to “everything in place,” goes to the team with the best teamwork.
Winning teams get recognized on stage at the event and receive a gift basket with prizes
When a Crossett Brook team won two years ago
have been practicing for the past six weeks to perfect their dishes.
Iron Chef 6th grade team with their dish: (back) Abby Saltzgueber
The sixth-grade team members – Audrey Conyers
and Jasper LaRocca – will be cooking Green Mountain pizza crepes
which are crepes lined with a blended pizza sauce and topped with chopped tomatoes and basil.
and Willow Thomas – are cooking a Sugarhouse Stirfry
which has a maple sauce mixed with rice and topped with tofu and various mushrooms.
Each team picked their dish with a brainstorming session
and their first practice tested their top two recipes to decide which one to present at the competition
This decision boiled down to a few points: Which dish could be made under the time constraints
Which recipe included more local ingredients
The teams also had to decide how they would apportion their dishes
completely intact dishes to present to the audience
along with 12 smaller samples for the judges to taste.
At what coach Hudson called the “dress rehearsal before their dress rehearsal,” both teams had their first timed practice.
“They’ve already made some decisions about switching people
‘I’m left-handed and we’ll be bumping arms,’” Hudson said
One big adjustment was needed after Crossett Brook Middle School was flooded recently
Iron Chef teams from the Sustainability Room’s kitchen where they had been meeting and cooking
The room was then needed for classroom space to accommodate classes from the first floor whose rooms were off-limits for cleanup and repairs to carpeting and flooring.
the teams moved to practice in the Harwood kitchen
“It was a lot of problem-solving,” said sixth-grade team member Jasper LaRocca
Students said they got involved in this competition after learning about it in their Sustainability class
All of the students said that they joined because of their love of cooking.
“I thought cooking in a competition and working in a team would be fun,” said sixth-grader Audrey Conyers.
“I love the opportunity to work with people who get excited about this and who want to create their own recipes,” she said
“Any way that I can help anybody feel confident in cooking… if you’re confident in here [the kitchen]
you can transfer that confidence elsewhere.”
competition at the Expo in Essex Junction is open to the public
Vermont Afterschool recommends an admissions fee of $3 per person and $5 per family
and the afternoon heat lasts from 1 to 3:45 p.m
Concessions will be available and there will be family activities for attendees including crepe-spinning by Skinny Pancake
