Let's work together to make Cutler Bay a greener
a 3.5-acre property located on Old Cutler Road and SW 87th Avenue
The acquisition and naming of these parks mark a victory for local grassroots efforts
as both names were suggested by the Town’s Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee
which comprises Cutler Bay residents dedicated to preserving our community's natural beauty and history
This collective effort highlights the importance of resident participation in shaping the future of Cutler Bay
Coastal Ridge Preserve: A Community-Driven Effort to Preserve and Protect
the largest environmental restoration project in U.S
In addition to the land purchase, the Town Council recently held a workshop where they discussed the masterplan conceptual design for the site
The conceptual design is set to be approved during the October 16
council meeting and includes nature pathways
pine rockland and hardwood hammock sections
and an observation deck overlooking the wetlands
consistent with the future CERP wetland rehydration project
The site concept was developed in coordination with Miami-Dade County
the South Florida Water Management District
Since the acquisition of Coastal Ridge Preserve
the Town has successfully secured significant funding to offset costs and support ongoing improvements
the Town received $1,106,570 in various grants from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Florida Communities Trust (FCT) Program to reduce the purchase cost
the Town was awarded $250,000 from the FDEP Resilient Florida Program to fund design
The Town has committed an additional $250,000 in matching funds
and the FCT contributed another $8,500,000
Veterans Park

The park’s name pays homage to the Town’s deep-rooted history of military service
as Cutler Bay’s origins are tied to housing built for Homestead Air Reserve personnel
Veterans Park symbolizes the Town’s gratitude and respect for those who have protected our freedoms at home and abroad
the Town of Cutler Bay received a significant boost to this project
securing $1.5 million in funding from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP)’s Florida Communities Trust program as part of its 2023-2024 funding cycle
The FDEP grant marked a significant achievement in the town’s ongoing effort to expand and enhance recreational and green spaces for its residents
The campaign was lauded for its creativity
utilizing internal resources to raise awareness about environmental conservation and the preservation of green spaces
and video materials aimed at engaging the community and fostering environmental stewardship
the town not only preserved the Veterans Park site but also engaged residents
and educational institutions in the effort
The park’s acquisition and preservation highlight the town’s dedication to maintaining its natural spaces while honoring the nation’s veterans
This project exemplifies the town’s broader commitment to environmental stewardship
Cutler Bay: Leading the Way in Environmental Stewardship

For the first time since Hurricane Andrew tore through in 1992
the South Miami-Dade town of Cutler Bay has a large-scale redevelopment underway
Officials met Thursday for a groundbreaking ceremony at Southland Mall, which is the subject of a $1.5B, 80-acre redevelopment from Electra America and BH Group
Electra subsidiary American Landmark’s Joe Lubeck and BH Group’s Isaac Toledano are spearheading the project
which will take an estimated five to seven years
The $1.5B construction project is starting with The Current
a 350-unit apartment building expected to deliver in 2027
“[Joe] said Cutler Bay was underappreciated
I think it was unrecognized,” Cutler Bay Mayor Tim Meerbott said at the groundbreaking ceremony
“Nobody realized how much we had down here
but these guys right here saw it and decided to invest.”
The developers landed a $125M predevelopment loan from New York-based Tyko Capital in November for the project
Southplace City Center is planned to include 150 hotel units
150K SF of retail and a community amphitheater at 20505 S
Southland Mall opened in 1978 as Cutler Ridge Mall before suffering heavy damage during Hurricane Andrew, closing and reopening in 1993. The 990K SF mall became the heart of the neighborhood but began to struggle in 2017 as major vacancies started to hit — first Kmart, then Sears vacating in 2020, The Real Deal reported
BH Group and American Landmark paid $100M for the mall in 2022
They don't plan to completely demolish the property — Macy’s
Buffalo Wild Wings and Applebee’s are all staying put — but it will be transformed into a more open-air retail center
surrounded by new commercial and multifamily
The developers envision a city within a city
aiming to create 3,000 jobs during construction
$44M in revenue within the first five years of the development's completion
and 2,000 permanent jobs after it is built
and it was a pleasure working with the city officials
with the county,” Toledano told Bisnow at the event
Since Meerbott stepped in to the role as mayor in 2019
redeveloping Southland Mall has been a top priority — an effort that Toledano and Lubeck were determined to see through
The developers are also replacing Cutler Bay Town Hall
which is relocating to a new civic development called Legacy Park
a police headquarters and a community center
On the stage at the groundbreaking ceremony
which was held in the mall’s parking lot in between the Applebee’s and the T.J
the mayor thanked Lubeck and Toledano for bringing the 16-year wait for a Southplace redevelopment to an end
“The smile on my face is genuine excitement for what's going to happen in South Dade.”

Guests of the pool at Cutler Ridge Park may be aware that the water-heater at the pool is broken—which has been especially noticeable this month with the cold fronts we’re feeling
we know these low temperatures won’t last long
but we also understand that swimming in a non-heated pool during this time may not provide the ideal experience
the pool has received wear and tear through these years and the water heating system has reached a point that is beyond repair
The cost to fully replace the system is over $50,000
which is in addition to the cost of a few more important updates the pool needs
While correcting this issue will require sizeable funding
we want to assure pool-goers that we’re looking at all possible solutions—long-term and short-term—to provide a better experience for you
This long-term solution may take several months
but it will allow us to make the most prudent financial decision while addressing all the pool's needs and ensure our residents can continue enjoying it for decades to come
If there is any additional information you would like to know about the pool, please contact our Aquatics Coordinator, Michelle Horne, at mhorne@cutlerbay-fl.gov or call (305) 238-5344
East Ridge at Cutler Bay is taking Hurricane season seriously
according to resident Jean Tong-Noon of the Cutler Ridge Woman’s Club
“Virginia Yermoli of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) joined a team of East Ridge residents
management and associates during their intense FEMA CERT training,” Tong-Noon said
The GFWC was founded in 1890 and is a federation of approximately 2,300 women’s clubs in the United States which promote civic improvements through volunteer service
“I was honored to be invited by The Cutler Ridge Woman’s Club last weekend to participate in their FEMA Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training,” Yermoli said
locally implemented initiative that teaches people how to better prepare themselves for hazards that may affect their communities
CERT trains the public in basic disaster response skills such as team organization
The ability for CERT volunteers to perform these activities frees up professional responders to focus their efforts on more complex
Yermoli was not able to participate during the entire three-day intense training sessions
but she did go one day to see first-hand how the program is taught
“It was an impeccable presentation put together by East Ridge and the club president
who is an incredible force to be contended with
not only in her club but the work she does throughout her community
and the CERT Program manager for Dade County
is not only committed to the program but looking for ways to adapt this training for schools
clubs and programs like human trafficking.”
Yermoli thought that the video presentations and hearing the speaker tell of the psychological aspects of witnessing any kind of disasters — how to cope
how to help others and the importance of what to say in these situations — was eye opening
“Watching the physical part of the training was intense as well,” Yermoli said
it occurred to me that this would be a program that all clubs across the nation could benefit from
being prepared for all kinds of emergencies is essential
not only to help the professional responders
buildings collapsing and other thingsm,” Tong-Noon said “Being prepared is something that will give you strength
whether you use it personally or to help others
CERT training is not only taught in the United States but also in many countries around the world. Visit FEMA’S website to learn how individuals, clubs and communities can benefit by taking advantage of this program.
