A Glass Cypress installation at The Webster
the installation examines the tension between process and display — where garments remain unfinished
suspended by the very threads used to construct them
Join us May 8th for a live installation and special capsule release from 6-8PM at @thewebster
COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — According to the Columbia Police Department, officers are investigating the suspicious death of a woman as a homicide at the 2700 block of Cypress Street
Crime scene investigators have processed the location for evidence and say the woman is not a Columbia resident nor student
The Richland County Coroner’s Office is assisting with the case
A community member informed ABC Columbia that both the 2713 and 2714 Cypress Street homes
which are between Devine and Gervais Streets and near the Five Points area
with crime scene investigators and a heavy police presence most of the day
More information is expected to be released
Print An evening meant to honor Cypress City Manager Peter Grant’s work over the past decade began with a laudatory presentation by Cypress Councilwoman Bonnie Peat then later turned
She praised Grant during Monday’s City Council meeting for making Cypress a safer city while adding parks
Peat credited him for Cypress being in solid fiscal shape
“We have increased our financial strength over the past 10 years
We grew our reserves [by] $50 million [in the same timespan].”
Council members posed for a photo with Grant in front of the dais after Peat’s presentation ended
addressed the council after the presentation and called for Grant’s termination
Dancs touted his 23 years of experience as a department head under seven city managers and 28 council members
the City Council should fire the city manager for cause,” he said
“This opinion stems from alleged unlawful acts of misconduct during my tenure.”
Fred Galante interrupted Dancs before he could continue
“This is completely inappropriate,” Galante said
“These comments should not be made in a public setting.”
Galante referenced the separation agreement in urging caution
Dancs argued that the agreement did not prevent him from discussing unlawful acts in the workplace
Cypress Mayor David Burke gave Dancs the floor
“I’m not going to continue based upon the city attorney’s comment back to me,” Dancs said before leaving the council’s chambers
“If he’s saying anything that I ever learned was confidential then I will stop.”
accused his former boss of “unlawful conduct” during Monday night’s City Council meeting
(James Carbone) The brief exchange left the members of the panel flummoxed
Burke weighed calling an emergency closed session
didn’t feel adequately briefed on the surrounding legal issues to give an informed public statement
“The conservative side of me wants to go ahead and say ‘let’s hold off on making any comments until we better understand what’s going on,’” he said
I want to be able to be in a city where people can express themselves
there are agreements that people are entered into that existed way before I was involved.”
The discussion ended soon after Medrano’s statement
Dancs could not be reached by TimesOC for comment after the meeting
His accusation also took former Cypress Councilwoman Frances Marquez by surprise as she sat in the audience
Marquez had criticized Grant’s tenure earlier in the meeting and claimed he retaliated against her for complaining about alleged harassment to the city’s human resources division. She named him as a defendant alongside past and present Cypress council members in a lawsuit alleging “unconstitutional retaliation.”
“Now that Dancs has come forward, it’s clear that there’s a pattern of behavior,” Marquez told TimesOC. “I was not the only one.”
Marquez, who served on the City Council until December, claimed to be unaware of any separation agreement regarding Dancs’ employment.
Cypress City Council (James Carbone) In response to a TimesOC request, Cypress disclosed Dancs separation agreement as a public record.
Interviewed by phone, Galante said that he is not authorized to disclose what preceded Dancs’ separation agreement, which was signed in late October by Dancs and current Councilman Scott Minikus when the latter served as Cypress mayor.
Its terms include a confidentiality and non-disparagement clause.
Disparaging remarks are defined as “false information” that show a “reckless disregard to its truth or falsity.”
But the agreement doesn’t prevent Dancs from “discussing or disclosing information about unlawful acts in the workplace, such as harassment or discrimination or any other conduct” he has reason to believe is unlawful.
“The agreement does not allow him to raise past complaints that predated the agreement,” Galante told TimesOC.
It remains to be seen whether Cypress takes any legal action against Dancs or if council members call for a closed or special meeting in the future to discuss matters surrounding his accusation.
In the meantime, Marquez is calling for an outside investigation into Grant with a report that will be transparent to all about its findings.
“The residents of Cypress have the right to know the outcome of an investigation,” she said. “They deserve to know the truth about our city’s highest ranking employee.”

She'd picked up the keys to the store's new location on her birthday
and had the business up and running on March 4
"It was pretty quick," she said of sorting through a "mind boggling" amount of stuff that had accumulated in the store's former location on Park Marina Drive over the 18 years she operated there
behind an organic grocery store and near an antiques seller
But it's also bright and sunny and is drawing new customers and sparking new programs
"I have the proper things now that I need to carry on," said Piearcy
a stylish 77-year-old who's run the quilting and sewing store for nearly three decades and is an accomplished quilter herself
While some customers come looking for 100% cotton fabrics to make clothing
When the lease on the property at 2453 Athens Ave
Piearcy said she'll be 80 years old and might want to segue into something different
Or she might just keep The Sewing Room going
I don't know what I want to do in three years."
What led Piearcy into the sewing businessPiearcy
She said she lost interest after going to college and went on to become a dental hygienist
The Redding resident sometimes created Victorian-style pillows or children's clothing
which she sold at a store that was then operating on Athens Avenue
happened to be looking to do something different
They drove a van up to Portland to buy specialty quilting fabrics
notions and other supplies from wholesaler EE Schenck Company
We loaded the back of her van with fabric and we got a bill for $5,000
'oh my gosh' and you only had 90 days to pay for that."
So they opened part of the store as a room where people could sew
Piearcy also created some items sold there
including aprons and other goods made from batik fabric
It got bigger and bigger and bigger," she said of her store
where motorists going by could sometimes spot a quilt on display outside next to the front door
worked hard developing the inside of the store on Park Marina Drive
where the business operated for nearly two decades
Since her husband had shaped the store's interior
moving from that space "was a huge decision," she said
"He developed that whole store on the inside
So that was hard because we had his celebration of life over there because he did all that over there
Piearcy has set up an airy sewing retreat room where weekend scrapbooking and sewing enthusiasts can gather
Vibrantly-hued quilts are displayed all over the place
along with a collection of tables with hand-painted tops where retreat participants set up their sewing machines
Space is also leased by a "longarm" quilter who puts together quilts for people not wanting to do the work themselves
Another person teaches people how to place designs on everything from furniture to tennis shoes
Someone offering knitting and crocheting classes comes to the store three days a week
mugs and other goods produced locally are sold
Piearcy displays her collection of vintage sewing machines picked up over the years
very old machines are displayed in their boxes
One ornamental piece that's hand-crafted from porcelan used to contain liquor
She's waiting to see how the government's new import tariffs impact her prices of cotton fabrics
which are imported from textile mills in China
Japan and Indonesia and recently sold for about $12 to $14 a yard
"We don't know what it's going to be," she said in April
"My (wholesale) companies I deal with are preparing for that
This will most definitely affect our business tremendously."

According to B-Real, SNL creator Lorne Michaels didn't have an issue with the group smoking weed; instead, he believed it was NBC that wasn't feeling the stunt, and he had a message for Michaels regarding the group potentially returning to the late night sketch comedy show.
"Lorne Michaels, bring Cypress hill back, let's go," said B-Real before sharing what he heard Michaels say during the SNL 50th celebration in February. "He said no one is banned so we'll see."
However, B-Real revealed that if Michaels lets the group back in, he will not make any promises about not smoking on the SNL stage again. This isn't the only time B-Real has spoken about the alleged 30-year ban.
In various interviews with Vlad TV and Drink Champs, the group emphasized how little they cared about following rules at the time.
"This isn't even the stage yet and they said, 'Don't light up on stage.' After a while, I was like, 'Man, fuck them.' 'Cause you know we're young and aggressive. We really just didn't give a fuck," said DJ Muggs on Drink Champs.
B-Real added, "That's why they should have us back now. For as much shit as we got for it, it's one of the most re-run episodes and they don't cut his part out. That's the beauty of it."

a protected swamp shelters a champion cypress
By Boyce Upholt
December 2024/January 2025
Forget a vista or a visitors’ center. Forget aesthetics entirely, and infrastructure, too. Cat Island National Wildlife Refuge sits in rural West Feliciana Parish
Crossed by several ATV trails and a single gravel road
it otherwise consists of thirteen thousand acres of unadorned swamp forest
That makes for a place alluring to mink and bobcats
but not to many humans—a fact that may be reflected in what the French first called the creek that drains these woods: Rivière à la Chaude pissie
This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply
It helps to know that this refuge is tucked at the foot of the bluffs that line the Mississippi River
in some of the southernmost land unprotected by the river’s levees
the classic terrain of the Southern cypress swamp—wet and wooded
once home to trees that towered nearly a hundred feet
might barely encircle the trunks of the biggest and oldest of them
This was a keystone species—one that helped regulate the flow of water
thereby sustaining habitat for other creatures
the loggers cut down nearly all of America’s ancient cypresses
since when the Mississippi rises each spring
the boundaries between water and land drown
which explains why it took until the 1980s for a pair of foresters to find an old bald cypress big enough to set a national record
At nearly a hundred feet tall and seventeen feet in diameter
this is not just the country’s biggest bald cypress; a sign at the refuge proclaims it’s the largest tree of any kind east of the Sierra Nevada
Congress turned this land into a national wildlife refuge—a status that protects the forests
though without all the fanfare (or funding) of a national park
No one is trying to make things here any more beautiful than they are
and it’s nice to leave a space that’s more about everyone and everything else
it’s a thirty-minute drive from the little hamlet of St
Several other ancient trees exist in these woods
spared because they were useless for timber
so massive that it rewrites your notion of what a tree can be
it’s impossible to calculate its exact age
although everyone agrees it’s been around for at least a millennium
that could leave another thousand years of life
I learned all these facts a few years back while working on a book about what human beings have done to the Mississippi—how it’s been dammed and leveed
but we rarely get to see the water: There’s a brick wall in the way
separating our neighborhood from the local port
the closest we get to Huck Finn living is listening to the bellow of the passing freighters rising over the wall
as a chance to glimpse one remnant of all that’s been lost
We first ventured north during those early days of COVID
inaugurating what’s become an annual ritual
Some of the highlights of the trip lie far from the tree
We typically stay in a cabin atop the bluff
We go for a hike past waterfalls and a stroll through sleepy and friendly St
Sometimes we head down the hill to the Oyster Bar
as that crudely named creek has been more politely rechristened
The bayou was once home to the most bustling port between New Orleans and Natchez
but year after year of floods washed the town away
Army Corps of Engineers stores stacks of the concrete panels it uses to prevent the Mississippi from shifting any further
My wife and I aren’t particularly pious people
Usually I try to climb to the cleft where the trunk splits in two only to find that my own year of growth has left me less agile
looking upward toward the light beaming through the cracks in the trunk above
and thinking about how I’m just a small being
Dolly Parton’s Smoky Mountain wonderland still sparkles
These top-notch bakeshops let flour-free customers have their cake—and pies
With noses trained to find species by scent
these dogs work alongside scientists to help protect rare plants and animals
The future of conservation in the South just got a little bit brighter—and not just for salamanders
but they’re the craftsmanship of local crustaceans called lawn lobsters
The drawls are receiving a lot of flak across the internet
but a North Carolina linguist argues they’re actually pretty accurate

The Cypress Creek Bridge will see another multi-day full closure starting May 1
the Virginia Department of Transportation announced on Monday
Crews with project contractor Crofton Construction will close the remaining westbound lane on South Church Street at the bridge from 7 a.m
eastbound traffic will continue to be diverted via Main and Grace streets to the Route 10 Bypass
This will be the third multi-day closure the bridge has seen since work began in January 2024 on the two-lane
circa-1975 bridge that connects downtown Smithfield with the east end of town
VDOT said the closures will facilitate the removal of the final nine existing damaged concrete beams
entailed removing old bridge beams and placing newly fabricated beams in their place
Both of the prior five-day closures ended three days ahead of schedule
When the bridge rehabilitation began in January 2024
VDOT said to expect four multi-day closures through this fall
when the bridge work is expected to be completed
VDOT said the latest daily closures are expected to remain through May 2 with a backup date of May 5 or until all beams and cranes have been removed
All pedestrian access to the bridge remains closed
VDOT stopped allowing pedestrians to use the bridge’s sidewalk in February when contractors switched westbound traffic from the eastbound lane to the westbound lane
Motorists will continue to use the westbound lane through the duration of the project
VDOT said access to all businesses and private residences on either side of the bridge will remain accessible during the multi-day full closure
VDOT awarded the $8.6 million contract in late 2023 to Portsmouth-based Crofton
the demolition and replacement of 18 spans
the repainting of steel beams and replacing the bridge’s sidewalk and barriers
Much of the work to date has occurred beneath the bridge out of the view of motorists
Editor’s note: This story was updated at 10:55 p.m
on April 28 with additional details on which beams will be removed

Metrics details
Rainfall intensity and duration pose significant challenges to the stability of plantations in mountainous areas prone to soil erosion
Accurately understanding how tree transpiration responds to atmospheric evaporation demands under real-time rainfall conditions is essential for enhancing our understanding of tree water use
the alder-cypress forest has been completely replaced by a pure cypress forest
which led us to employ the heat dissipation probe method to measure sap flux of cypress wood
To analyze the responses of cypress trees to real-time and delay-time rainfall
we utilized no- and seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average with exogenous variables models to analyze the responses of sap flux to external environmental factors
Our analysis revealed that past values of sap flux and vapor pressure deficit jointly accounted for 79.6% (wet season) and 34.6% (dry season) of current sap flux values in the delay-time condition
past sap flux values and rainfall did not explain the variance in current sap flux values (R2 = 7.01 × 10− 4)
This indicates a decoupling between present and past sap flux and the other three environmental factors in real-time conditions
The findings demonstrate significantly different hydraulic drive patterns of trees under real-time rainfall conditions
providing a new basis for forest managers to optimize irrigation plans and allocate water resources effectively
Sap flux serves as a crucial indicator of tree transpiration and reflects the regulatory mechanisms related to plant physiological characteristics and environmental factors
few studies have investigated the relationship between tree sap flux and environmental factors during rainy days
This necessitates more sensitive models to accurately capture the transient effects of short-duration rainfall pulses
alder has been completely replaced by pure cypress wood forest
their growth is significantly constrained by site conditions
Rainfall serves as the primary source of soil water
but it also plays a major role in soil erosion
understanding how trees respond to real-time rainfall (0-interval) is crucial for maintaining plantation stability
The primary objective of this study is to investigate how cypress trees respond to environmental factors and to develop response models under real-time conditions (RT)
both dry and wet seasons (DT) were analyzed
The findings will help bridge the gap in predicting water use for cypress wood under real-time rainfall conditions and enhance forest water use efficiency in response to rainfall patterns
ultimately benefiting precise forest water management
Curve of original series for the RT (real-time) and DT (delay-time) conditions
Inverse roots of ARMA polynomials for the optimal models
a-1 and a-2 are optimal SARIMAX models for SFt and Gt in the dry season
b-1 and b-2 are optimal SARIMAX models for SFt and Gt in the wet season
c-1 and c-2 are optimal ARIMA(X) models for SFt and Gt in RT
Forecasting and performance of the optimal models in validation
a-b and d-f are optimal SARIMAX models for SFt and Gt in the DT conditions
c and f are optimal ARIMA(X) models in the RT
S12 and S10 represents first-order seasonal differencing for the wet and dry seasons
D represents first-order no seasonal differencing in the RT condition
This demonstrates the efficacy of the approach in capturing the variability of tree sap flux across diverse conditions
By uncovering the negative effects of immediate rainfall on the close relationship between tree sap flux and environmental factors
this study emphasized the beneficial effects of such disruption on tree transpiration recovery
It offers a theoretical basis for effective forest water management and improves the predictive accuracy of tree water use models during rainfall

The hourly canopy transpiration per unit ground area (Kg·m− 2·h− 1) is calculated as follows:
where \(\:{A}_{s}\) represents the sapwood area (m2, Table 5)
which was determined using concentric circles
\(\:{A}_{c}\) is the projected canopy area (1.34 m2)
and \(\:{K}_{t}\) is a units conversion equal to 3600 s·h− 1
To account for the combined effects of air temperature and relative humidity
the air vapor pressure deficit (\(\:{VPD}_{t}\)
KPa) was calculated by determining the difference in vapor pressure between saturated and ambient air
m·s− 1) was calculated using the following formula:
d (m) is the zero-plane displacement (approximately 0.75 h)
h is the reference height at which \(\:{WS}_{t}\) was measured (here 10 m)
\(\:{z}_{0}\) (m) is the roughness length for momentum (approximately 0.1 h)
and u (m·s− 1) is the wind speed at height z0 (m)
introduced a non-seasonal autoregressive integrated moving-average (ARIMA) model with autoregressive order p and a moving average order q
An ARIMA with exogenous inputs (ARIMAX) of order (p
Where \(\:\:\rho\:\left({L}^{p}\right)=1-{\rho\:}_{1}L-{\rho\:}_{2}{L}^{2}-\cdots\:{\rho\:}_{p}{L}^{p}\)is the non-seasonal autoregressive (AR) polynomial of order\(\:\:p\)
\(\:\theta\:\left({L}^{q}\right)=1+{\theta\:}_{1}L+{\theta\:}_{2}{L}^{2}+\cdots\:{\theta\:}_{q}{L}^{q}\) is the non-seasonal moving average (MA) polynomial of order \(\:q\)
\(\:{y}_{t}\) is the output series (\(\:{SF}_{t}\) or \(\:{G}_{t}\) series)
which needs to be integrated \(\:d\) times to become stationary before modeling
\(\:{x}_{t}\) is the exogenous input with k-dimension
\(\:{WS}_{t}\) and \(\:{RF}_{t}\) series in this case
\(\:\eta\:\left({L}^{r}\right)={\eta\:}_{1}+{\eta\:}_{2}L+{\eta\:}_{3}{L}^{2}+\cdots\:{\eta\:}_{r}{L}^{r-1}\) is the polynomial of non-seasonal order \(\:r\) for \(\:{x}_{t}\)
The first-order stationary series can be expressed as \(\:{y}_{t}(1-L)={y}_{t}-{y}_{t-1}\) (2)
and the second-order stationary series can be written as \(\:{{y}_{t}(1-L)}^{2}={y}_{t}-{2y}_{t-1}+{y}_{t-2}\)
\(\:{\epsilon}_{t}\) represents the error item
A seasonal ARIMA model with exogenous inputs (SARIMAX) of order (p
Where \(\rho {\:_S}\left( {{L^P}} \right) = 1 - \rho {\:_{S1}}{L^S} - \rho {\:_{S2}}{L^{2{\rm{\;}}S}} - \cdots \:\rho {\:_{SP}}{L^{PS}}\) represents the seasonal autoregressive (SAR) polynomial of order \(\:P\)
\(\theta {\:_S}\left( {{L^Q}} \right) = 1 + \theta {\:_{S1}}{L^S} + \theta {\:_{S2}}{L^{2{\rm{\;}}S}} + \cdots \:\theta {\:_{SQ}}{L^{QS}}\) is the seasonal moving average (SMA) polynomial of order \(\:Q\)
\(\eta {\:_S}\left( {{L^R}} \right) = \eta {\:_{S1}} + \eta {\:_{S2}}{L^S} + \eta {\:_{S3}}{L^{2{\rm{\;}}S}} + \cdots \:\eta {\:_{SR}}{L^{(R - 1)S}}\) represents the polynomial of seasonal order \(\:R\) for \(\:{x}_{t}\)
\(\:S\) is the order of the season (10 and 12 in the dry and wet seasons
and \(\:D\) indicates the number of seasonal integrations required for series stationarity
The first-order seasonal stationary series can be written as \(\:{y}_{t}(1-{L}^{S})={y}_{t}-{y}_{t-S}\)
and the second-order seasonal stationary series can be written as \(\:{y_t}{(1 - {L^S})^2} = {y_t} - 2{y_{t - S}} + {y_{t - 2{\rm{\;}}S}}\)
and the best-fit models were selected based on the AIC and BIC criteria
To investigate the response of \(\:{SF}_{t}\) in C
funebris to immediate rainfall pulses and soil water availability
we analyzed two conditions: the real-time condition (RT) and the delay-time condition (DT)
we focused on the rainy days between 2015 and 2017
specifically selecting instances where rainfall persisted for more than 4 consecutive hours each day and where \(\:{PAR}_{t}\)≥5 w·m− 2
This resulted in a total of 137 observations representing the RT
selecting moments where \(\:{PAR}_{t}\)≥5 w·m− 2 each day
with monthly rainfall amounts below 20 mm (12.3 mm in January and 4.1 mm in February) and exceeding 100 mm (324 mm in July and 135 mm in September)
This yielded a total of 220 observations for the dry season and 132 observations for the wet season
