Many of Mikko Rantanen's greatest moments have come in a Colorado Avalanche sweater
It's just that the most defining moment of his career came at their expense
the feeling was incredible to win a series," Rantanen said in his postgame media availability
"This series was not exactly what I expected
Belief was there with the group the whole time
I was able to make a play to get the first one and the crowd started to roll."
The Stars, attempting to reach the conference finals for a third straight time, advance to the semifinal round where they will await the winner of the series between the St. Louis Blues and Winnipeg Jets
That encounter will be decided Sunday in Game 7 in Winnipeg
the Stars' collective focus will shift to another Central Division foe
Part of what made the Avalanche-Stars series arguably the most intriguing first-round matchup was because it placed two 100-point teams that are in championship window against each other
the most notable being the team that traded quite a bit to land Rantanen -- with the hope he could help it win a Stanley Cup -- needed him to defeat the team that he won a championship with in 2022
Rantanen responded with a three-point performance in Game 5 and a four-point showing in Game 6 only to then have a hand in each goal Saturday. His first goal came on a power play with 12:12 remaining in the third period when he found enough space to fire a wrist shot that beat Mackenzie Blackwood
Drury's penalty opened the door for Rantanen to score a tying goal that might be one of, if not, his signature salvo. Rantanen skated into the Avalanche zone in a 1-on-3 before he split two players before going around the net for a wraparound goal that went off the skate of Samuel Girard with 6:14 left
Three minutes later, the Stars received another power-play opportunity that saw Rantanen, along with former Avalanche forward Matt Duchene, work together to find Wyatt Johnston for the inning goal
"I couldn't care less who scored for them, I really couldn't," Avalanche captain and left winger Gabriel Landeskog said when asked about what it was like to watch Rantanen deliver
"Mikko is one of my best friends and I love him
but I couldn't care if he scored or if somebody else scored."
Rantanen was part of a homegrown movement that saw the Avalanche go from finishing what was then the worst record in the salary cap era in 2016-17 to becoming a perennial favorite to win the Stanley Cup
They also become a model by building through the draft
the Avs were facing the prospect of possibly making a difficult decision
They had yet to agree to a new contract with Rantanen
came the blockbuster trade that few throughout the league saw coming
The Avalanche traded Rantanen in a three-team deal that saw them get Martin Necas and Drury along with two draft picks
Rantanen's time with the Hurricanes was limited to just two goals and six points in 13 games
Despite the fact the Hurricanes are also among that cadre of championship contenders
Rantanen struggled to find cohesion in Raleigh
Rather than run the risk of watching him leave in free agency
the Hurricanes put out feelers to a few teams
A long-time admirer of Rantanen, the Stars packaged two first-round picks, three second-round selection and former prized prospect Logan Stankoven to get Rantanen
They signed him to an eight-year contract worth $12 million annually
"It's two things: It's where our team's at
and it's Mikko Rantanen," Stars general manager Jim Nill told ESPN in March
Rantanen finished the regular season with five goals and 18 points in 20 games prior to the showdown with his former team
Not only did Rantanen's hat trick hand the Avalanche to their second first-round exit since winning the Stanley Cup
but it continued a theme of former Avalanche players eliminating their former employers
The Avalanche and Stars faced each other in last season's Western Conference semifinal that saw Duchene
another former Avalanche first-round pick delivered the devastating blow
"It seems pretty fitting," Johnston said of Rantanen
and I think that goes a little extra when it's a guy like that who is such a big part of our team and was there for a long time and everyone knows the trade that went on
As if Rantanen scoring a hat trick in rallying from two goals down wasn't enough
there's also the fact that this is the ninth consecutive Game 7 that Stars coach Peter DeBoer has won in his career
DeBoer's nine wins in Game 7s broke a tie with Darryl Sutter for the most in NHL history
It was also DeBoer's third Game 7 win with the Stars
"I felt something was going to happen," DeBoer said

Just a day after the Stars pulled off a miraculous comeback in Game 7 of their series, the Winnipeg Jets did the same, taking down the St. Louis Blues in double overtime
The Stars will now face the President’s Trophy winners in the second round
Here are five things to know about the Stars’ series against the Jets:

The Jets trailed from just 70 seconds into the game and were two minutes away from the offseason when Vladislav Namestnikov brought the game within one goal
With 1.6 seconds remaining in regulation Cole Perfetti scored the game-tying goal to send Game 7 to overtime
The Jets and Blues battled through almost two full overtime periods before Adam Lowry scored the game-winning goal
The Jets may be more tired than the Stars entering Wednesday’s Game 1
having one less day of rest and playing an extra 36 minutes in Game 7
The Stars will hope they can use that to their advantage
It’s rare to want to face the league’s top team in the playoffs
but the Jets may have more than just the Presidents’ Trophy curse working against them
Winnipeg has a reputation for falling apart in the playoffs
as does its superstar goaltender Connor Hellebuyck
The Jets have reached the playoffs in seven of the last eight seasons but have advanced past the first round only three times
it has only won four total playoff series and never a Stanley Cup
The Jets entered the playoffs as the league’s best team
the last team to secure a spot in the West
But the series required a miraculous comeback and double overtime in Game 7 just for the Jets to survive
Dallas is the more experienced team this time of year
coming off back-to-back runs to the Western Conference finals
The two best American-born goalies in the league will go head-to-head for a spot in the Western Conference finals
and possibly the starting spot on Team USA in next year’s Olympics
Winnipeg goalie Connor Hellebuyck had safely secured that starting spot during what’s expected to be a back-to-back Vezina campaign and a standout performance in the 4 Nations tournament
He has posted a .830 save percentage and 3.85 goals-against average in seven games — and his road numbers are much
as the Jets gave up 17 goals on the road this series
was a big reason Dallas survived such a grueling series against Colorado
finishing with a .911 save percentage and 2.85 goals-against average
Both Dallas and Winnipeg are missing key players as the series approaches
The Stars played the entire first round without leading goal scorer Jason Robertson
who suffered a leg injury during Game 82 of the regular season
Both players have now been skating with the group and are labeled day-to-day
Head coach Pete DeBoer said Saturday night that he expects both to play at some point in Round 2
Winnipeg’s second-leading scorer in the playoffs
missed Games 6 and 7 after two major hits in Game 5
Scheifele finished with a career-high 87 points (39 goals and 48 assists) in the regular season
The Jets’ Josh Morrissey left Game 7 in the first period with an undisclosed injury
Morrissey has three assists in six playoff games and 62 points (14 goals and 48 assists) in 80 regular-season games
the return of key players will be an important storyline in the early games of the Dallas-Winnipeg series
The Stars will be without home-ice advantage for the first time since the 2023 Western Conference finals
The Stars battled down the stretch of the season to catch the Jets in the Central Division race
but Winnipeg’s hot start left them too far ahead
That means the Stars could have to make three trips to Manitoba for Games 1
They will also have to win at least one road game at Canada Life Centre where the Jets are undefeated in the playoffs
A large reason for Winnipeg having that advantage is the regular-season series between these two teams

Dallas City Council and school board elections attracted few eligible voters
a decadeslong trend that has voting advocates trying to figure out how to make local contests more appealing
According to the county’s elections department
Dallas County municipal elections attracted only 8.4% of 1.4 million registered voters
was not up for reelection and that helped keep turnout extremely low
And only 47,300 turned out to the polls on a beautiful May Saturday that featured Kentucky Derby parties and early Cinco de Mayo events
Political PointsGet the latest politics news from North Texas and beyond
The low participation rate is concerning because local elections feature leaders that most impact the daily lives of residents
from basic services like public safety and trash pickup
to tax rates and attracting businesses and amenities
Most Texas residents have tuned out local elections
with reasons ranging from fatigue over too many elections
poor outreach by candidates and general apathy
voters have been asked to go to the polls at least seven times in Dallas County
“People are unfortunately fatigued with all the elections,” said state Sen
“We need to reduce the number of elections that we are having and make them more meaningful when we have them.”
but Texas legislators are trying to address the problem
The Senate in April approved a bill authored by Sens
and West that would move Dallas council elections from May to November in odd years
Supporters hope the change will lead to greater voter turnout because residents are more familiar with November elections
Houston has its elections in November of odd years
Municipal election turnout in Harris County is usually about double that of Dallas County
Harris County’s November 2023 joint elections attracted 17.4% of eligible voters
“The idea is to have those kinds of elections decided by a large number of people,” Johnson said
a House bill on moving the election to November in odd years is expected to be heard in the Elections Committee this week
“The bill has a ton of momentum and I think it will help increase turnout,” Anchia said
“You look at similarly situated cities that have moved their elections to November of odd-numbered years and the turnout has increased.”
Dallas voters approved moving elections to November in odd-numbered years
the Dallas City Council will have the final decision
Moving the local elections to November has attracted bipartisan support
The Senate approved a bill authored by state Sen. Bryan Hughes, R-Mineola, that would move municipal elections across Texas to November to the same date as partisan general elections. The legislation would get rid of May elections, except in the case of runoffs and emergencies.
Hughes’ bill would give cities the option of staging elections in odd- or even-numbered years.
That option is significant because simply moving Dallas City Council elections to November of odd years won‘t be enough to boost turnout to the level of November partisan elections.
Many Dallas officials are wary of having November elections in even years and at the same time as partisan elections for president or governor. Still, that’s where you would get the biggest uptick in voter participation.
“Let local governments be the laboratories,” he said.
Moving Dallas elections to November in odd-numbered years could increase turnout and keep nonpartisan elections separate from partisan contests.
Council elections in isolation may not attract a large number of new voters, so supporters of moving the election date would also like to see school and college district elections also held in November.
“It’s really about election consolidation,” said David de la Fuente, a former Dallas Charter Review Commission member who supports moving the election date. “For a lot of folks showing up to vote on only one thing is just asking them for too much.”
No matter the election date, elected leaders concede that politicians need to do a better job of connecting with voters. It can be difficult in local races, where candidates don‘t have the money and resources of their partisan counterparts to mount effective media campaigns.
“We still have to figure out a way to incentivize elections and motivate people to vote,” West said. “We need to do what we need to do from a grassroots standpoint to encourage people to vote.”

DALLAS MAVERICKS' OFFICIALS and select staffers
packed the team's plane along with members of Dirk Nowitzki's inner circle
to celebrate the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame induction of the most legendary figure in franchise history
Mavs general manager Nico Harrison made the trip
but their relationship dated more than two decades to when Harrison began his career at Nike as an NBA regional field representative based in Dallas
Dallas' director of health and performance
was also part of the team's traveling party for the weekend
who arrived in Dallas as the Mavs' head athletic trainer in 2004 and was promoted to the executive ranks 15 years later
for helping him extend his career to 21 seasons
Others who joined them for the Hall of Fame festivities
which featured a pair of extravagant private parties organized by Nowitzki's longtime special projects manager Lara Beth Seager in addition to the Hall of Fame functions
don't recall anything seeming amiss that weekend in Springfield
when Harrison and Smith were each accompanied by their wives
the summer before the generational talent led the Mavs to the NBA Finals
A few days after returning to Dallas' Love Field from the Hall of Fame event
when the franchise that had endured a frustrating
losing season was on a high from honoring Nowitzki
Harrison informed Smith that they needed to meet
Smith replied that it wasn't possible to meet in person; he had gone to his hometown in Ohio to be at the side of his gravely ill mother in the final weeks of her life
Harrison set up a video conference meeting instead
Smith was then informed that his services in Dallas were no longer needed
ending a nearly two-decade tenure with the franchise
The reason for the dismissal centered on Smith being "too negative," according to sources briefed on the discussion who interpreted the vague reasoning to mean Smith wasn't enough of a yes-man
"He was 100 percent threatened by him," a team source told ESPN
referring to Harrison's concern that Smith's voice carried too much weight with the franchise
"He's going to show that I'm in charge and nobody else can question that."
It was a stunning first step in Harrison's overhaul of the team's health and performance group over the past two offseasons
Smith's unceremonious departure was followed by the dismissals of athletic performance director Jeremy Holsopple and manual therapist Casey Spangler in June
only days removed from Dallas' appearance in the NBA Finals
"You bringing up Casey [Smith] is like almost, it's kind of a joke," Harrison said Tuesday during an availability with selected Dallas-based reporters
to bring him up this year doesn't really make sense
So it's -- I'm not even going to comment on that."
Holsopple and Spangler were all longtime Mavs employees who had helped Doncic
a Slovenian who spent his adolescence in Spain
make the major cultural transition after coming to Dallas as a teenager
They had become confidantes for the superstar
but sources said Harrison saw them as "enablers" of Doncic
despite them being immensely respected by their peers throughout the league
Holsopple was the NBA's Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year in 2021
and Smith's tenure as Team USA's head athletic trainer included the 2008 and 2012 Olympic gold medal runs
"We feel that the guys that replaced them have done an amazing job," Harrison said
you're coming at me from a negative standpoint
and I look at it from a positive standpoint
Dysfunction between Harrison's new hires -- director of player health and performance Johann Bilsborough and athletic performance director Keith Belton -- has been problematic as the Mavs' medical misfortune mounted throughout the season
The Mavs have not employed a full-time manual therapist this season
the Mavs sweated out fielding an active roster with the league-minimum eight available players as Dallas dipped below .500 before finishing 39-43 to claim the Western Conference's last play-in bid
also drove Nowitzki away from the franchise that he proudly played for his entire career
opted to no longer be involved in the inner workings of the franchise's basketball operations after Smith's forced exit
Nowitzki had served as a senior adviser to Mark Cuban
frequently attending practices and providing input when he was in Dallas
Sources told ESPN that Smith's ouster also prompted the departure of Mavs vice president of basketball communications Scott Tomlin
another two-decade employee of the franchise who was close with Smith
Tomlin accepted an offer to become the executive director of the DN Companies and The Dirk Nowitzki Foundation
"My obligation is to the Dallas Mavericks," Harrison said Tuesday
"It's what's in the best interest of the Dallas Mavericks
some of those decisions are going to be unpopular
but my obligation is to the Dallas Mavericks."
Nowitzki and Tomlin have attended two NBA games since the beginning of February: Doncic's Lakers debut in Los Angeles on Feb
you could already see the team heading in a different direction," Nowitzki
who declined an interview request from ESPN
said in German during a recent appearance on his foundation's Campus 41 podcast
When the Dallas Mavericks fired longtime director of health and performance, Casey Smith, left, in August 2023, it created a rift between the organization and its two biggest stars: Luka Doncic and Dirk Nowitzki. Tim Heitman/Getty ImagesDERECK LIVELY II
a 21-year-old center who projects as a long-term cornerstone
20 because of a right ankle sprain after sitting out the previous two games
Lively went through an intense return-to-play workout before sitting out again that night
The plan was for Lively to play at home two nights later against the Minnesota Timberwolves
prompting him to send Lively for a CT scan
It revealed a stress fracture in his right ankle that sidelined the center for the next 2½ months
"Somebody should be fired for that," a team source said then
portrayed the handling of Lively's injury as proof that his medical staff is "elite," as he said Tuesday
Sources said that Lively's camp was pleased with Bilsborough's communication and collaboration during the recovery and rehab process
"It actually goes to show the strength of our medical team
but his signs and symptoms where our medical team knew it was something more," Harrison said
"So that's why they went and tested them again and saw the CT scan
which they actually avoided a potential catastrophic injury
they didn't feel right putting him on the floor
and thank God we saw that he had a stress fracture."
heated confrontation between Bilsborough and Belton that began in the trainer's room at the practice facility and continued into the weight room
Harrison did not reply to a question about the incident -- or several others regarding the health and performance group -- ESPN submitted to the Mavs' media relations department this week
The Mavs declined to make Bilsborough or Belton available for comment
but they were going at it," one of many sources who viewed the surveillance footage of the incident told ESPN
"That was coming for a long time," another team source said
The Mavericks have been the second unhealthiest team in terms of injuries in the NBA this season
according to ESPN's BPI. Kevin Jairaj/Imagn ImagesTHE FRICTION HAD been simmering for months
Harrison had created the uncomfortable dynamic by agreeing to hire Belton before Bilsborough
even though Bilsborough is in charge of the department
Bilsborough does not respect Belton's acumen
"He's a glorified cheerleader," one team source said
"But Nico clearly wanted cheerleader energy."
According to the National Strength Coaches Association database
Belton does not have either of the certifications from the association that are required for NBA strength coaches
per Article XXII of the collective bargaining agreement
The CBA states that an individual hired as a head strength and conditioning coach must have at least three years of experience since receiving those certifications
An NBA spokesman said the league office was aware that Belton lacked the required certifications
but that the league office accepted his certifications from the College Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association on a temporary basis with the expectation he would receive his NSCA certifications immediately after the season
Belton's UCLA biography noted that he "was a winner of the prestigious Stucky Award given to individuals who excelled during the practical section of the exam."
Some of Belton's critics describe him as more of a personal trainer than the "body engineer" that is standard for modern NBA strength coaches
"Johann is a little bit handcuffed in his department," a team source said
"[Belton is in] a pivotal role that trains players
but keeps the department in line to a philosophy and everyone working in the same way -- [Belton is] none of those things
the two of them have been beefing since day one
"He has shown no respect to Johann the entire year
He either ranges from completely standoffish to doing the dumbest s--- with a player just to prove a point to Johann
You can't do what he's done and not put a player more at risk by doing that."

had no previous NBA experience before this season
He had spent the previous four years as the director of football performance at UCLA
one of several college stops during a coaching career that has primarily focused on the sport he played professionally
One Celtics source described Bilsborough as a highly intelligent academic expert -- but not a practitioner -- and someone who tends to be "divisive when he disagrees with somebody."
the Celtics' head athletic trainer and director of performance at the time
They had no previous relationship but were hired in the same offseason to be co-heads of Boston's health and performance group
"That was a problem," the Celtics source said
There were Art Horne people and there were Johann people."
The communication between the cliques in the department was infrequent and unproductive
Bilsborough left the Celtics after three seasons
having been promoted to director of organizational growth and team development in 2022
Bilsborough struggled to establish rapport with Doncic and the five-time first-team All-NBA selection's "body team." Harrison had already alienated Doncic by running off the people he trusted and respected
who already had big shoes to fill in replacing Smith
It's not a coincidence that Jalen Brunson's New York Knicks hired Smith as their vice president of sports medicine as soon as his Mavs contract expired last summer
New York also hired former Mavs athletic trainer Heather Mau
The games lost to injury for the Knicks have dropped significantly from last season
and Smith and Mau recently oversaw Brunson's recovery from a gruesome ankle sprain
Weeks after leaving the Mavs in free agency in 2022
Brunson discussed how much he would miss "the Caseys," Holsopple and Mau during an appearance on the "Old Man and the Three" podcast hosted by JJ Redick
Redick mentioned that he still was in an active group chat with those then-Dallas staffers despite spending only two months with the Mavs at the end of his playing career a year earlier
"Not a lot of people understand how much of a difference those people make in your everyday life," Brunson said
And the fact that they're so personable and you can talk to them about anything
that makes it even harder [to leave the Mavs]
as well as agents and associates of multiple players currently on the Dallas roster
Some described him as evidenced-based and competent; others are critical
The complaints about him are that he doesn't establish relationships with players or staff
doesn't travel with the team often early in the season and occasionally had "optimistic" timetables for return from injury
"If you're not around the team all the time
you shouldn't be involved in decision-making," a team source said
Added another team source who otherwise praised Bilsborough: "That is definitely a challenge
You can't be perceived as this guy that hovers around
You got to be able to get in and obviously that's Casey's magic."
Harrison defended the Mavs' health and performance group
pointing out that the vast majority of injuries sustained by Dallas players this season have been "unavoidable" and caused by contact
Mavs players have aggravated injuries or sustained related injuries immediately upon their return
"It's hard to say what a guy should have for a contact injury
but how fast they come back or how likely they are to reinjure it
That's the medical staff and the [performance] staff."
Added another team source: "I think that is where you really see the effect of the dysfunction
but not just within the medical department
but the pressure to tread water until other guys come back so that you can prove what decisions [the front office] made up until this point were the right ones
I think there's a dysfunction on an organization level because of the trade itself."
The most notable and costly example is the left adductor strain sustained by Davis during his Dallas debut on Feb
when he returned from an abdominal strain that he sustained Jan
Davis was motivated to make a strong first impression to the outraged Mavs fan base in the first home game after the shocking blockbuster deal
He acknowledged that he should have waited another game or two to return
but Davis said it was his decision made in consultation with his personal medical team and Bilsborough
"They meet and communicate every day," said Davis
who works with his own staff in the weight room instead of Belton
That description doesn't apply to the dynamic between Bilsborough and Belton
who say their discord has been a detriment to the team
the performance and medical [staffs] are seamless," a team source said
"And here they're just completely separate and at odds
It's pretty clear to see the effect of the divide
The division created an unfortunate environment that ultimately the players had to suffer from."
employing their own health and performance staff to work in consultation with their team's department
Doncic and Seager had envisioned his staff working seamlessly with Smith
who made annual summer visits to Slovenia and often attended Doncic's national team games around the globe
With Smith having been dismissed for the final year of his contract
Holsopple was the Mavs' point man in the union with Doncic's body team
Doncic's camp considered the first season of the arrangement a great success
9.2 rebounds and 9.8 assists during the regular season and became the first player in NBA history to lead the league in points
He also led the league in total minutes with 3,524 combined in the regular season and playoffs
feeling as if that's how the Mavs portrayed the superstar in the aftermath of the trade
ending Doncic's dream to spend his career in Dallas
Harrison was concerned Doncic had still gained weight during the season while carrying the heavy workload
The tension thickened between the GM and the increasingly alienated face of the franchise and his camp
Bilsborough stepped into a difficult situation and didn't endear himself to Doncic's camp
From the play-in tournament to the NBA Finals
ESPN has you covered throughout the playoffs
who had made Doncic's happiness his top priority since Dallas acquired the draft rights to the prodigy in 2018 and worked closely with Seager for years before that
But Harrison had succeeded in pushing Cuban completely out of basketball operations since Patrick Dumont took over as the team's governor and didn't want to cede any ground
It didn't help matters that Doncic was hit in his left calf while scrimmaging with teammates at SMU just before training camp opened
It was initially believed to be just a bruise
but after Doncic experienced significant soreness in the opening practice of camp
which the Mavs did not mention in their injury release
Doncic sat out the preseason and added more than a dozen pounds during his absence
frustrating and angering Harrison and others in the organization
who also used his own team of doctors instead of the Mavs' physicians
was diagnosed with a sprained right wrist on Nov
Sources said Harrison and the Mavs' medical staff considered the diagnosis a cover-up to allow Doncic time to work on his conditioning and shed weight after a sluggish start to the season by his standards
a day before the fifth and final game he sat out
a television in the media room at the Mavs' practice facility was tuned into the closed-circuit feed of Doncic scrimmaging with low minutes players and staffers
launching long jumpers on almost every offensive possession
saying they were unsure how it became available
The feed has not been shown in the media room since
Barrio Calvo and Bilsborough communicated regularly
Barrio Calvo and Duffy were often tense and unproductive
The tension between the sides soared after Doncic sustained another left calf strain -- his fourth in a 28-month span -- on Christmas Day. Doncic's camp believed he had returned too quickly from a left heel bruise he had sustained during his 45-point triple-double in a Dec. 15 win over the Golden State Warriors and had been playing on his toes to avoid discomfort in his heel
"I did know that Luka was important to the fan base. I didn't quite know it to what level."-Mavericks GM Nico Harrison on the Luka Doncic trade pic.twitter.com/AIpzFygBb3
The sides also drastically disagreed on the timetable for Doncic's return after receiving the MRI results. Bilsborough believed Doncic could be back in two or three weeks, sources said, while Doncic's team adamantly stated that he needed to sit out six weeks. They got their way, and a target return date was set for the Feb. 8 home game against the Houston Rockets
Doncic didn't put any weight on his left leg for two weeks
using crutches and a scooter to get around
The MRI results four weeks later were encouraging but the plan remained in place
Another major disagreement emerged between the sides when Doncic refused Harrison's request to join the team on a five-game trip leading up to his target return date
Harrison griped that Doncic was holding the team hostage
Doncic's camp argued that he was better off having around-the-clock access to the Mavs' practice facility than traveling with the team
It pointed out that Doncic was doing two-a-day
which wouldn't be possible with court time difficult to book on the road
He also could utilize the weight room and the high-tech medical equipment at his convenience
which isn't the case in other team's arenas and hotels
said he'd be happy to practice with the G League Texas Legends in Frisco
The next time Doncic's camp heard from Harrison
it was to share the news that the trade he'd been secretly negotiating for weeks with the Lakers was finalized
This comes after the team missed the playoffs despite being in the NBA Finals less than a year ago
and the Mavs certainly proved that this year
trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers shortly before Kyrie Irving tore his ACL
With Doncic and Irving gone, the Mavs will need a point guard to rely on, which is why CBS Sports writer Kyle Boone has Dallas taking Oklahoma point guard Jeremiah Fears in his latest mock draft.

embattled GM Nico Harrison looks to the future here in a high-risk
He's an electric ball-handler with traits of a future star if he can become more well-rounded as a shooter and shape up his defense," Boone wrote
Fears will have the chance to learn behind one of the best point guards of the generation in Irving
while also learning to potentially become his successor someday
Fears would likely not start in his rookie season as he still just a teenager competing on a team that wants to win next season
the Mavs would be adding someone who could be part of their core moving forward
and that is the biggest goal with this pick
The Mavs will participate in the NBA Draft Lottery on Monday

A new era of professional soccer is coming to North Texas: The soccer entity previously known as USL Dallas has a new identity
The announcement about the new branding was made during a fanfare-filled event in downtown Garland on May 2 featuring appearances by local personalities such as Armando “El Chiquilín” Ulloa of La Grande 107.5 FM, who also joins the club as a minority owner and brand ambassador.
“This brand launch is more than a name reveal —it's a declaration of who we are and what we stand for,” Valentine said. “Atlético Dallas reflects our ambition, our roots in the game, and our commitment to uniting the community through our shared love of soccer."
Part of the new brand identity includes bold team colors: Texas Topaz (light blue), Blackland Crude (black), Silver Ore (metallic silver), and white. Hey sounds like Cowboys colors. There are also wolf and snake mascots.
Atlético Dallas' youth division will now be known as Atlético Dallas Youth, following a recently announced partnership with Renegades Soccer Club. With more than 2,500 young athletes and a reputation for competitive excellence, the transition will strengthen the club’s commitment to developing homegrown talent through a clear and direct pathway to the pros.
The club is preparing to kick off play in the USL Championship in 2027, joining the fastest-growing professional soccer organization in the U.S.

The NFC has been the weaker of the two conferences in recent memory, but the Dallas Cowboys continue to fall short year after year
Despite recent regular-season success, quarterback Dak Prescott has yet to lead Dallas beyond the divisional round in the postseason. The Cowboys have not been in the NFC Championship game since they won the Super Bowl in 1995

Dallas is one year removed from three consecutive 12-5 finishes but finished third in the NFC East in 2024 with a record of 7-10
There hasn’t been a repeat division champion in the NFC East for the last 20 seasons
The NFL is known for its parity and the NFC East is a prime example of that trend each year
The Cowboys have made relatively few headlines this offseason and have engaged in minimal transactions. This is largely because of the uncertainty surrounding contract negotiations - or the lack thereof - with their star defensive player, Micah Parsons
The most significant offseason move occurred when the team parted ways with head coach Mike McCarthy following the regular season and hired offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer as its new head coach
The new coaching staff quickly focused on rebuilding the once-dominant offensive line by selecting Alabama guard Tyler Booker with the 12th overall pick in the draft

And in the process DeBoer set the record for most Game 7 wins with nine
One small note about DeBoer and Game 7s, because I’m sure you’re curious: the last time DeBoer lost one in his career was the OHL final in 2000 as his Plymouth Whalers fell to the Barrie Colts 4-2. New Jersey Devils coach Sheldon Keefe opened the scoring in that one (Keefe was an incredible player in junior) and DeBoer’s leading scorer that season for his Whalers was…Mr
And while I may be in the minority on this point
I LOVED these two teams meeting in the first round before either team got more banged up than they already were later in the playoffs
and the more bangers we can get to kick things off the better
And if that means starting with what could have been a conference final
it’s tough watching Colorado exit the postseason early considering they were a legit pick to win it all
I wish every playoff season could start like that
part of what made Mikko Rantanen comfortable in Dallas during a tough adjustment period were the other four Finns in Dallas
now that we know Miro Heiskanen is going to return at some point in the second round: does DeBoer make history and start The Finnish Five
I can’t see DeBoer breaking up the Granlund – Hintz – Rantanen line
so all that’s needed is for Heiskanen to pair with Esa Lindell
While I don’t think the Buffalo Sabres are going to turn a frog into a prince with one kiss
I do think they’ll take steps this summer to inch themselves closer to a playoff spot
It would not surprise me if Kevyn Adams broke with his philosophy of building through youth exclusively and started to move younger players for established players – like he did last summer shipping out Matt Savoie to get Ryan McLeod
The feeling is it’s time to use some of their young assets
the field narrows for who will ‘win’ the 2003 NHL Draft
Brent Burns and Corey Perry remain active in the league
the 2003 Draft has also already spawned a number of hockey broadcasters – Paul Bissonnette of Spittin’ Chiclets/TNT
Nation Network teammates Jay Rosehill of Leafs Morning Take and Maxim Lapierre of La Poche Bleu
Nate Thompson (Energy Line with Nate + JSB)
Shane O’Brien (Missing Curfew) and Shawn Belle (Hello Hockey)
It also produced one Canadian country music star
whom the Canucks selected in the sixth round
The ’03 draft also featured one player whose son will be a top pick in the upcoming WHL Bantam Draft – Dave Liffiton’s boy Thor
should hear his name called early (and what a name!)
file under ‘If you’re wondering’; the last player from the 2002 draft to suit up in the NHL was Duncan Keith
while the winner from 2001 was goaltender Craig Anderson
Still skating from the 2006 draft are Jordan Staal
James Reimer and the ultimate wildcard Jonathan Toews if he returns next season
The finals in all three CHL leagues are almost set
Gavin McKenna and the Medicine Hat Tigers take on the Spokane Chiefs in the WHL
the London Knights play Oshawa in the OHL and Moncton faces off against the winner of Memorial Cup host Rimouski and Shawinigan
The Moncton Wildcats only lost a single game through the playoffs through three rounds
Not a surprise when you consider they’re coached by the ‘winning machine’ Gardiner MacDougall
but the D pair of Lian Bichsel + Alex Petrovic was excellent against Colorado

much of it born from a running style that puts on display his belief that he can "out-physical'' his opponent
And yes, that style reminds Dallas Cowboys fans of an all-time favorite
Can the former Clemson star Mafah really live up to the comparison to former Cowboys fan favorite Marion Barber
Mafah plowed his way to 1,115 yards and eight touchdowns
And over the course of his four-year career with the Tigers
230-pound Mafah seems slightly resentful at the suggestion that he's "only'' a power back
NFL scouting "comps'' are never fully fair
But they do provide some shorthand - and not just for fans and media
too - as to a player's skill set and style
Do some people look at Mafah and see Marion Barber
who sadly passed away in 2022 at the age of 38
Barber - who came to Dallas as a fourth-round pick and played here from 2005 to 2010 - was 5-11 and 218 and he initiated contact
"It's a mentality,” Mafah said
“My approach to the game is I got to be the toughest dude on the field
So that's all you see out there for me.”
he's got a steep hill to scale right now. Dallas didn’t stand pat this offseason as the Cowboys signed Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders in free agency
then doubled down by drafting explosive rookie Jaydon Blue in Round 5 and Mafah after that
the "Marion the Barbarian'' comp fits
Then new coach Brian Schottenheimer can play his "MartyBall'' (like his late father) and new offensive coordinator Klayton Adams (an offensive line coach at heart) can play ball-control and Cowboys Nation might just have itself a new fan favorite

a pastor and a former Dallas Independent School District trustee
said he was running on his record as an advocate of public education in his district
“I’m not taking this race for granted,” he said
Johnson dominated with more than 70% of the votes throughout the night
He’ll represent residents in South Oak Cliff’s District 4
council member Omar Narvaez’s chief of staff
is in prime position to take over unfinished projects started by her predecessor
She’ll represent District 6 residents in West and northwest Dallas
She was up against seven opponents and had enough votes — just over 50% — to avoid a runoff
a rarity for a first-time candidate with so many challengers
There were four open seats heading into Saturday’s election
Omar Narvaez and Tennell Atkins reached their term limits in Districts 4
and District 11 council member Jaynie Shultz opted not to run for reelection
Districts 8 and 11 residents will have to wait for a runoff on June 7
Former District 8 City Plan Commissioner Lorie Blair walked into the race with a bevy of endorsements and the biggest war chest of over $63,000. Yet, she was trailing former council member Erik Wilson into the wee hours of the night
In District 11, Jeff Kitner and Bill Roth raised thousands of dollars in campaign funds through donations and their own money
Kitner had collected around $129,000 in donations
Roth raised nearly $60,500 in donations and used $126,000 in personal funds to supplement his run
Outgoing District 8 council member Tennell Atkins has represented South Oak Cliff for 16 of the past 18 years
Atkins assumed the herculean role of shepherding the City Council through $4 billion shortfalls in the employee pension systems and hiring a new city manager
Atkins also led the influential economic development committee
he represented the city in the Texas Legislature and in board meetings when Mayor Eric Johnson couldn’t make it
“His absence will be felt,” Chad West told The Dallas Morning News ahead of the elections
West’s summation captures a major shift in southern Dallas’ politics
who has overseen her district for nearly a decade
was ineligible to run after the city charter was amended to add stricter term limits
She was the first Black woman to serve as the mayor pro tem in 2022 and has advocated for racial equity plans that give southern Dallas the investment it needs to match the progress the northern half of the city has experienced
endorsements from the two outgoing council members — Arnold for Kebran Alexander and Atkins for Blair — failed to get their chosen successors past the finish line
In District 11
Dallas’ business and political class coalesced behind former Park and Recreation Board member Jeff Kitner in his bid to succeed Schultz
had the support of a neighborhood coalition that has been advocating against the construction of a high-density apartment complex to replace aging retail center Pepper Square
Roth secured 48% of the votes and Kitner rounded out at 45%, and the two will meet once again at the polls next month.
This year’s elections weren’t that different from the ones in the past. Less than 8% of the city’s voters chose to return all incumbents back to council
The low turnout is likely to be worrisome for those who have been yearning to see a City Council that accurately represents the needs of the city’s more than 1 million residents
Still, some trends were far more pronounced. Over 40 candidates raised about $1.6 million
making it one of the most expensive in recent history
especially at a time when the mayor wasn’t up for election
Partisan influences became clear when local Democratic and Republican parties got involved in educating voters about their options and former Democrat Mayor Eric Johnson switched parties after his reelection in 2023
and community members who were emphatic about neighborhood rights
A majority of the city’s elected officials had double-digit leads when the polls closed Saturday night
Those who appeared to be vulnerable due to criticisms in social media circles won their races handily
many of whom are headed to their last terms
didn’t just win their races decisively; they made gains in their voter base
which covers North Oak Cliff and Kessler Park
has been at the center of the debate between development and gentrification
New types of multifamily housing have sprung up all around the Bishop Arts area
indicating a cluster of neighborhoods in the midst of evolution
has pursued a series of zoning changes as part of his West Oak Cliff Plan
which he says represents a defined pathway of mindfully developing the region
West increased his voter base by nearly seven percentage points
Near the Cedars and the southern half of downtown Dallas
council member Jesse Moreno staked an early win and expanded his winning margin against challenger Sukhbir Kaur
Zarin Gracey and Mendelsohn also won by double-digit margins
Their races ended as soon as they began after early vote totals were released
Mendelsohn evaded a unique challenge in District 12
after Republican consultant Joshua Frick recruited progressive candidate Marc Rossouw and abortion-rights candidate Jose Cavazos to chip away at Mendelsohn’s base
both her opponents targeted her political leanings as a Republican and her track record with entities like Dallas Area Rapid Transit
as well as former District 12 council member Sandy Greyson
But it did not resonate with voters as Mendelsohn won Dallas County with 68% of the votes and 65% in Collin County
the race to represent District 7 has historically had four or more contenders on the ballot
Races have almost always gone into a runoff
who ran his strongest race this time around
bagged nearly 57% of the votes — a near-five percentage point jump from his 2023 performance
The newly reshaped City Council will need to jump right back into work
Council members will begin parsing the city’s budget in what is expected to be another difficult budget year
The city received the last of its COVID-19 federal relief dollars
and there’s a lot of uncertainty on whether it will continue receiving federal grants
President Donald Trump’s administration has already pulled federal support for the proposed high-speed rail line between Dallas and Houston
Top of mind during budget development will be a mandate to hire 900 more police officers to the workforce
Voters approved two controversial charter propositions last November that set a hiring threshold for the city and charged the city to divert half of any new revenue it generates year-over-year to public safety initiatives related to salaries
Another proposition stripped the city of its governmental immunity
The passage of the propositions was widely seen as a “wake-up call” for City Hall to do better
The city’s financial position continues to be under a lot of scrutiny after credit rating firm Moody’s downgraded the city’s financial outlook from “stable” to “negative.”
homelessness solutions and libraries tend to take the biggest hits
Last year’s budget was built around pension payments the city will be ramping up in order to close the funding shortfall in 30 years
The police and fire pension system is suffering a $3 billion shortfall
and the civilian pension fund is short $1 billion
the city will also host thousands of visitors who will travel to the Dallas-Fort Worth area for the FIFA World Cup
The city is in the midst of readying the convention center and Fair Park for the festivities
but council members — who hold the power of the purse — will need to make critical decisions to balance the budget

A blowout loss like the one San Diego FC handed FC Dallas should feel like a match not worth examining
four against the run of play on counter attacks feels like more of the signs I've been pointing out for weeks that a good attacking team could exploit
As much as I would like to over think this loss in my weekly breakdown
the schedule this week thankfully forces us to move on from it rather quickly instead of dwelling in it
Yes in the sense that this game showed us once again how a formation and a lack of change in said formation will ultimately be the killer of this team
its more of what we've been seeing in pieces for the last few weeks
We saw signs of it breaking over the last few weeks
All the facts from FC Dallas’ blowout loss in San Diego
The unbeaten run away from Frisco has come to a close in a very ugly way
The Dallas Cowboys have some question marks in their cornerbacks room going into the 2025 NFL season
Diggs has missed a significant amount of games over the past two seasons and his status for the start of 2025 is up in the air after undergoing another knee surgery in January
which was the same knee he suffered a torn ACL on in 2023
And, because of his $97 million contract that has no more guaranteed money, and with the team drafting Shavon Revel, USA TODAY's Nate Davis rightly believes Diggs is "on thin ice" going into 2025
Davis' opinion has led to Last Word on Sports' Anthony Palacios to suggest possible landing spots for Diggs if he's traded
and Palacios names the Baltimore Ravens as one of them
It’s never a bad time to add more cornerbacks to strengthen a team’s roster
the Baltimore Ravens had a questionable secondary unit where veteran Marlon Humphrey was carrying most of the weight
Even though Brandon Stephens had his moments
it wasn’t enough to earn him a new contract in Baltimore
Head Coach John Harbaugh made a crucial switch in their safety unit
and the secondary game got better once Ar’Darius Washington gave some relief
The Ravens are coming off a season in which they sported one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL
so improvements were desperately needed going into the offseason
the team has added Chidobe Awuzie to start across from Nate Wiggins
and Marlon Humphrey is still under contract to man the slot
However, Awuzie has had issues staying healthy during his career
Baltimore also chose not to draft a cornerback until the sixth round
Diggs looked to be on a superstar trajectory over his first two years in the NFL and was an electric playmaker over his first three seasons after returning several interceptions for touchdowns
his coverage stats began to take a dip in 2022 and he has missed a ton of time since 2023
any team acquiring Diggs would be taking a leap of faith
That said, he does only account for a $12.5 million cap hit
and while his contract is scary on the surface at such a big number
so the Ravens wouldn't be trapped if they trade for him
But it's hard to envision any team taking a chance on Diggs
thanks to his uncertain status for next season
It would be quite the risky move to acquire Diggs not knowing when he'll be ready to take the field
and it would be a pure disaster if a team trades for Diggs and he doesn't play at all
Chances are Diggs is going to remain in Dallas through the start of the season
but if he returns healthy before the NFL trade deadline
all bets are off and he could definitely be dealt at that point

A suspect opened fire in a Dallas high school Tuesday
injuring four students in the second shooting incident at the school in just over a year
The gun used in the shooting was brought into the school outside of “normal intake hours,” officials said
but they did not specify what type of gun was used
Wilmer-Hutchins is equipped with metal detectors
and students are required to have clear backpacks
Almost exactly a year before Tuesday’s shooting
another Wilmer-Hutchins student was shot in the leg in a classroom
and the district was criticized in the weeks following for allowing the gun to enter the school despite the security measures in place
and it should not be familiar,” Dallas ISD Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde said during the news conference
described the investigation as “fluid” and said more details would be released later
Wilmer-Hutchins will be closed for the rest of the week
and Elizalde said the school would provide mental health resources to students
Nearby Wilmer-Hutchins Elementary School also was locked down
but there was no danger to the school and it will be open Wednesday
Elizalde said she spoke with Gov. Greg Abbott in the hours after the shooting
and Abbott released a statement Tuesday evening stating his office would provide the resources necessary to “arrest the criminals involved and bring them to justice.”

Phliadelphia Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert scores on a touchdown reception of 24 yards against the Green Bay Packers during Wild Card Weekend
Philadelphia did nothing in the 2025 NFL Draft to potentially replace Dallas Goedert
nor did general manager Howie Roseman give a firm answer regarding the tight end's future following the event
Roseman, who said ahead of the draft that the Eagles would not be affected by uncertainty surrounding Goedert -- currently in the last year of his contract -- forwent selecting a tight end with any of the team's 10 picks
"Dallas is part of the team as we speak," Roseman said when asked if the TE-free draft class changes anything
we're going to continue to address things on this team and right now nothing further."
Goedert's future has been called into question due to his $11.7 million cap hit in 2025
coupled with zero guaranteed money remaining on his contract
Goedert has played a full slate of games only once in his seven-year career -- and that was as a rookie
He managed a career-low 10 regular-season appearances last season due to injury
which led to a career-low two touchdown catches
Goedert's 496 receiving yards and 42 catches also both marked lows outside of his inaugural campaign in Philly
Roseman's non-answer on Goedert's future likely speaks volumes to some
There's still plenty of offseason left to figure out if it's simply the GM keeping things in house or a sign of a split to come
Roseman did sing Goedert's praises when asked whether or not he could see a path where the TE comes back to the Eagles
"Dallas is a heck of a player -- a heck of a player
"Certainly don't want to do anything publicly where we're discussing anyone's business
Been to two Super Bowls together and obviously would love him on this team
You always love having Dallas on this team
but we're not there right now on any of that
They did, however, add to the position in free agency, signing Harrison Bryant and Kylen Granson
Grant Calcaterra is also returning
The fourth-year tight end filled in capably during Goedert's 2024 absence with 24 catches for 298 yards and a score
Without a big splash at the position during the draft
it remains to be seen if Philadelphia at least finishes out Goedert's contract so he can continue to lead the group as he has for many years
NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo reported on March 31 that although his contract made for a difficult financial decision
the Eagles weren't actively looking to dump Goedert

DALLAS (AP) — A suspect in a shooting at a Dallas high school that wounded four students and drew a heavy police response to the campus has been taken into custody
school district officials announced Tuesday night
Three of the students were injured by gunfire and the fourth was injured in their lower body
according to the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department
The department said units were dispatched to Wilmer-Hutchins High School just after 1 p.m
were taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from serious to not life-threatening
And it should not be familiar,” Stephanie Elizalde
superintendent of the Dallas Independent School District
The school district said in a statement Tuesday night that a suspect was apprehended within hours of the shooting
but didn’t provide details about the person or say whether they had been arrested
assistant police chief for the Dallas Independent School District
said at the earlier news conference that the investigation was fluid and she did not have any information on what led to the shooting
The three who were shot were between the ages of 15 and 18
while the age of a person with a “musculoskeletal injury” was not known
School district officials and police gave few details during the news conference held several hours after the shooting
which drew a large number of police and other law enforcement agents to the roughly 1,000-student campus
“I know that there are many questions and we’re not going to have all of the answers right now because some of the information will be inaccurate,” Elizalde said
Authorities said other students and their parents had been safely reunited after the students had evacuated earlier in the day from the campus
Aerial television footage taken above the high school Tuesday afternoon showed multiple police vehicles thronging the complex
Elizalde said that there would be no school at the high school for the rest of the week but that counselors would be available to students
Smith said that the gun didn’t come into the school during “regular intake time.” She said “it was not a failure of our staff
or of the machinery that we have.” But she said she could not elaborate on that
said after the shooting that she was now considering homeschooling them
“I can’t keep going through this as a parent,” she told Dallas television station KDFW
it’s very frightening to think about losing your child
Greg Abbott said in a statement that “our hearts go out to the victims of this senseless act of violence.”

Texas — As the NFL offseason calendar speeds along
Brian Schottenheimer digs his heels in more and more as both a first-time head coach and the latest leader of the Dallas Cowboys
The latest tasks involved conquering his first NFL Draft and then welcoming a class of 18 rookies to minicamp
Schottenheimer is the same as he was when he was an analyst for the Cowboys in 2022
and the team's offensive coordinator in the two seasons that followed — not changing his approach whatsoever to his players or coaches
"I think I've always been someone that believes in connections
getting to know these guys," Schottenheimer said
"I've always been someone who's been able to be demanding and I'm pretty good at disciplining guys
because I think I've seen too many people change."
He went on to elaborate on the outcome for those who have
opted to morph into a different version of themselves simply because they earned the power to do so
"The guys I've seen change — I'm not going to name them — they weren't very successful
and I plan on being really successful," he said
"The reason I think I'll do that is because of my values and my beliefs and how hard I work
but also because I'm going to be me and I'm not going to change that for anything."
Another major key to establishing the new culture in Dallas will be interactions between players, something All-Pro pass rusher Micah Parsons made clear when asked about his recent viral exchange with former Cowboys’ defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence
Schottenheimer not only orchestrated locker reassignments that place Parsons next to All-Pro quarterback Dak Prescott — his still being next to CeeDee Lamb's (sending the message that they are the Big 3 as far as player leadership goes) — but the Cowboys' head coach is also
noting interactions between veterans who are currently in the building and the rookies who reported last week
Bottom line is this isn't simply the perfect time to get the rookies acclimated to the team and the expectations they'll face this summer and beyond
but to also take inventory of relationship-building within the locker room
"I was kind of sitting at the bottom of the team room watching the interactions go on with different position coaches talking to players … and everybody like that," said Schottenheimer of his early observations
and that's the culture that you want to build
one that's about being family-first and first class and joyful
is that your veterans reach out and will assist these young players
"Dak reaching out to [rookie first-round pick] Tyler Booker the night of the draft is one example
Jalen Tolbert told me he stopped and said hello to three or four of the guys
Luke Schoonmaker was here yesterday getting some extra work and stopped to talk to a few guys he had competed against
The hope is it all spills over onto the field by way of wins and a deep playoff run
because Schottenheimer is far from naive and knows this is a league where a championship is always the endgame; and especially for a club thirty years removed from its last dance with glory
we're going to be judged on wins and losses
and that's part of the deal," Schottenheimer said
No one wants to win a Super Bowl more than me
I'd not be doing my job if I didn't make sure that both young and old players alike weren't investing in one another."
The former Bruin showed what he could do at UCLA
and he explained what NFL gamewreckers he's been studying to bring that same violence for the Cowboys
It's been a long journey to the NFL for new Cowboys cornerback Shavon Revel Jr.
but he's finally gotten to where he's wanted to be his entire life
and now is looking to prove to everyone why he belongs
When Shemar James got the call from the Cowboys during the 2025 NFL Draft
the moment was as manifestation of everything he dreamt about his entire life
former Oregon wide receiver Traeshon Holden got his opportunity in the NFL when the Cowboys signed him
New Cowboys defensive end Donovan Ezeiruaku is ready to get to work in his new home
and prides himself on being a versatile "dawg" that can cause havoc in the backfield
The Cowboys hosted all 18 of their rookies at the Star in Frisco on Thursday to start the preparations for the team's rookie minicamp
Not content to use only one 2025 NFL Draft pick on a running back
the Cowboys launched one at Jaydon Blue and the other at Phil Mafah; and both appear ready for impact
Texas – Every football player dreams of one day hearing their name called in the NFL Draft
To get so close to living that dream and come up short hurts
But Cowboys undrafted free agent WR Traeshon Holden's disappointment is behind him
I'll do what I can to show everybody that I belong."
Holden was one of nine undrafted free agents that the Cowboys signed last week and now gets to reunite with his collegiate wide receivers coach Junior Adams in Dallas
He told me if he got a chance to come get me
After beginning his collegiate career at Alabama
Holden transferred to the Ducks ahead of the 2023 season
as Adams was heading into his second year coaching receivers in Eugene
Holden had the best two year stretch of his college career with 82 receptions
"Me and his relationship is more than player-coach," Holden said
"I call him if I just need to talk to somebody
It's good that we have it in the pros for sure."
Oregon has some of the best facilities in college football
with plenty of support from Nike CEO Phil Knight to make that possible
walking around the Star in Frisco blew Holden out of the water
it's like an Oregon times ten," Holden said
Heading into the start of rookie minicamp on Friday
the tours of the facility and paperwork are all over
Holden's ready to show teams that passed up on him they made a mistake in doing so
"Prove everybody wrong," Holden said on his mindset for minicamp
the Cowboys have added 30 new players to the roster
creating plenty of changes at each position
Former NFL head coach and current Boston College head coach Bill O'Brien has a unique perspective on the Cowboys' first two 2025 NFL Draft picks
He offered his perspective on the two and what they bring to Dallas
When Brian Schottenheimer became Cowboys' head coach
and that includes some that required looking in the mirror
While all eyes might be on the first-round pick named Tyler
there's another player – Tyler Neville – whose journey to get here is why he calls himself "the luckiest guy on the planet."
the Cowboys had a successful result but there are still lingering questions

Estimated project costs are more than $445 million
and construction is expected to begin near the end of the year
The firm is seeking property tax abatements for the project
It was on the Dallas’ EDC briefing memos for its Monday meeting
but the project was not discussed and the board took no action
Plans are expected to appear before the Dallas City Council later this month
D-FW Real Estate NewsGet the latest real estate news you need to know
The project’s first phase will include six new
8-story buildings on more than 5 acres surrounding the tower
Called “The Apron,” it will include 465 apartments
The project’s second phase calls for converting roughly 27 floors of empty office space into rental condos
Five floors of the tower will remain office space
Eight floors will be converted into a hotel
Branding and other hotel details will be released at a later date
according to the firm and public documents
The city estimates it will forgo more than $13.8 million in tax revenue if the abatements are approved
Plans for the conversion and redevelopment have been in the works for years
The latest iteration is focused more heavily on residential
Saks Global shuttered the Neiman Marcus corporate headquarters at the tower as part of cost-saving efforts
Plans were announced in 2020 for a 5-star InterContinental Hotel to be built inside the tower at North Central Expressway and Haskell Avenue
the project was delayed during the COVID-19 pandemic
NexPoint said hotel details have changed as the focus of the redevelopment has shifted
“The original luxury hotel concept catering to business travelers is no longer suitable,” said NexPoint spokesperson Lucy Bannon
“We are revising hotel plans to align with the project’s intended uses
NexPoint Diversified Real Estate Trust has owned the office tower since 2018
The firm paid $195.75 million for the property
The 42-story Cityplace Tower cost about $300 million to build in the 1980s
“Current plans at Cityplace have changed significantly from the original vision in 2018,” Bannon said
the project now has the potential to have an outsized impact on the surrounding area and address critical demand for housing amid Dallas’s rapid growth.”

DALLAS -- Mikko Rantanen had a hat trick and an assist
and the Dallas Stars rallied with four straight goals in the third period to eliminate the Colorado Avalanche with a 4-2 win in Game 7 of the Western Conference First Round at American Airlines Center on Saturday
Rantanen is the first player in NHL history to score a hat trick in the third period of a Game 7
and the first to record multiple four-point periods in a single postseason after also achieving the feat with a goal and three assists in the second period of Game 6
“I expected a seven-game series even before Game 1,” Rantanen said
a couple of games we didn’t play well at all
gave up a goal on our power play and they score first shift of the third
“But I think belief was there with the group the whole time
I was able to make a play to get the first one
The crowd really helped us there at the end.”
Gm7: Rantanen notches first postseason career hat trick for 4-point game
Dallas will face the Winnipeg Jets or St. Louis Blues in the second round
Even when it was 2-0 and we didn’t have anything going,” Stars coach Pete DeBoer said
“There’s a belief in that room that something was going to happen
Rantanen put the team on his back in the last 10 minutes
They have had a lot of stuff thrown at them from an adversity point of view
and they keep responding and keep responding
DeBoer is now 9-0 all time in his career in Game 7s
the most wins of any head coach in NHL history
Wyatt Johnston broke a tie at 16:04 of the third for the Stars, who are the No. 2 seed from the Central Division. Matt Duchene had two assists, and Jake Oettinger made 25 saves
“You can't write it up any better than that,” Oettinger said of Rantanen’s performance
One of the best individual performances I've seen in the playoffs in my life
would have been easy for us to say it just wasn't our year
Gm7: Johnston rips it home from a tough angle to the put the Stars on top on the power play
Nathan MacKinnon and Josh Manson scored for the Avalanche, who were the No. 3 seed from the Central. Mackenzie Blackwood made 15 saves
Rantanen cut Colorado’s lead to 2-1 at 7:49 of the third on a shot from the high slot into the top corner of the net blocker side
“I don’t really have any words right now to describe what happened,” Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar said
“We felt like our play was good enough 5-on-5 and we controlled the pace of the game
Rantanen’s second goal of the game tied it 2-2 at 13:46 on a wraparound that banked in off Colorado defenseman Samuel Girard’s skate
Johnston then gave Dallas a 3-2 lead on the power play 2:18 later with a one-timer off a cross-ice pass from Duchene
and Rantanen completed the hat trick with an empty-net goal with three seconds remaining for the 4-2 final
“There probably wasn’t a whole lot of belief that we were going to be able to get it done with 15 minutes left in the third
so just awesome that we were able to battle back
especially in front of the home crowd,” Johnston said
My ears are still ringing from how loud they were
a lot of pretty special games and special wins coming up in the next little while.”
Manson scored a short-handed goal to give the Avalanche a 1-0 lead at 9:50 of the second period. After Stars defenseman Thomas Harley lost a puck battle along the boards, Avalanche forward Logan O'Connor fed Manson as the trailing forward and his shot bounced in off Oettinger after the goalie made the initial stop
Gm7: Manson rings one off the post and in for a short-handed goal to open scoring
“You want to try to play your best hockey as much as you possibly can,” Colorado captain Gabriel Landeskog said
you want to make sure your B-game is as good as it possibly can get
You know it’s easy to sit here and say we should’ve done this
but I thought we deserved better to be honest with you
but I thought we played a hard-fought series and carried the play and we just couldn’t find a way to [win]
Lose a couple (games this series) in overtime and then this one is obviously a heartbreaker.”
MacKinnon made it 2-0 just 31 seconds into the third on a shot from the top of the crease on a delayed penalty call
“It’s tough because you put your heart and soul into the whole year
all of it and then you’re in a good position and then it slips away on you,” Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said
it’s tough because I know how hard these guys worked and how bad they wanted it and that’s all you really think of at this point.”
NOTES: Johnston became the first player in NHL history to score multiple series-clinching goals in Game 7s at the age of 22 or younger (2023 Western Conference Second Round against the Seattle Kraken)
… Rantanen became the first player in NHL history
to record four points in a period in two consecutive games
… DeBoer became the first coach in NHL history to record multiple comeback wins when trailing by two or more goals in the third period of a Game 7 (also first round in 2019)

His 9-under-par 62 on Sunday, which vaulted him to a fourth-place finish in the CJ Cup Byron Nelson
is the latest and best evidence that he is priming for the PGA Championship in two weeks
where he’ll have a chance to join Rory McIlroy as the latest to complete the career grand slam
Spieth’s 19-under finish still left him 12 shots behind that of winner Scottie Scheffler
with whom Spieth played the opening two rounds and often plays with at Dallas National and Royal Oaks and Trinity Forest
“I know if I’m able to clip him when we’re playing at home
then I’m playing really well,” Spieth said
“That’s just the way it’s been the last few years
It makes me want to work harder and be better
especially after watching him for two days and just getting my butt kicked
it would have been hard to be at 18-under in two rounds
“So just getting your butt kicked right there face to face at this tournament really stinks
to finish to backdoor into a top 10 or top 5 or whatever ends up happening.”
Before anyone gets Spieth’s words twisted, he considers fellow-Longhorn and Dallasite Scheffler a friend and said he was glad one of them finally became the first local product to win the CJ Byron Nelson Cup since Scott Verplank in 2007
Scheffler’s victory gave him 14 PGA Tour wins to Spieth’s 13
but Spieth still has the edge in major championships
or for some reason don’t credit him appropriately for it
Spieth won the 2016 Charles Schwab Championship in Fort Worth — about as close to a hometown win as it gets
alleviating pain that he’d experienced for the better part of two years
He was asked Sunday if it was nice seeing himself and Scheffler at the top of the leaderboard
which is cool; that was probably the best chance I ever had in this event was ’22,” he said
“With Scottie there — I don’t think this counts
it would have been really cool if I were the one in that last group
and at least we were going back and forth a little
I wish that I would have been able to keep up with him those two rounds.”

Sunday marked Spieth’s third top ten of the season and his fourth straight tournament of finishing 18th or better
when he had surgery it was with a 10-year vision in mind
not necessarily winning golf tournament right away
Sunday might have provided a breakthrough in that the four-foot putts on which Spieth has found himself grinding seemed easier
He credited the 21-foot eagle putt he made to complete his third round of Saturday
“My mechanics are just getting a little bit better each week,” he said
“I’m able to do sufficient stuff maybe that I wasn’t able to do last year that maybe my wrist is holding me back; I’m not sure
“I feel really good about what we’re working on
I know how to — I need to get a little bit on top of — I started to get some nerves going on the back nine
I didn’t drive it great when I was driving it really well
“Little nuances like that when you start to feel like you’re in contention — I mean
So just try to go in the next week and just cap off what these last 19 holes were here.”

How much do you think the Cowboys are going to regret not drafting a wide receiver
The Dallas Cowboys response to dropping out of the playoffs at 7-10 and third in the NFC East a year ago
after making the postseason as a 12-game winner the previous three seasons
For a team that was so fundamentally broken in the final year for head coach Mike McCarthy
one that left the team so unrecognizable from his past successes that many fans have a hard time remembering all McCarthy actually did accomplish on the football side of things over his tenure
this renewed focus on fundamentals has been praised at some turns
but criticized feverishly at others - mainly the hiring of offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to replace McCarthy as head coach
Schottenheimer’s first draft has cooled those waters considerably
The Cowboys front office has never wavered in wanting to use the draft as their main source of talent acquisition
Although this wasn’t expected to change under Schottenheimer at all
the team had to do more than sit on their hands and let players get away in free agency without signing new players themselves
and did so while also being active on the trade market
this was enough to go into the draft with a clearer focus on targeting the best players available
The Cowboys still showed preferences for the things their new head coach is seeking
like improved line of scrimmage play by spending the 12th overall pick on guard Tyler Booker and 44rd pick in the second round on defensive end Donovan Ezeiruaku
They continued to target high character prospects from blue chip programs like Texas
and Oregon on day three with running back Jaydon Blue
This full commitment from picks 12 through 247 to create a deeper roster and strengthen positions with existing star power is what’s earned the Cowboys strong grades for their draft as of now
but the obvious position of need this strategy left unaddressed is guaranteed to remain a talking point from now all the way to Schottenheimer’s regular season debut in September
talking about the Cowboys not being good enough at the wide receiver position
because a lack of dynamic skill at WR has been an off-and-on problem for the Cowboys through multiple head coaches
Even with it being a position they’ve shown a willingness to step outside their perceived comfort zone and address with in-season trades
like for Amari Cooper in 2018 and Jonathan Mingo last year
the Cowboys are regularly behind the best of the best in the NFL when it comes to making enough big plays on the outside to truly contend in the postseason
like the unfortunately brief period where CeeDee Lamb
and Michael Gallup were all healthy and on the field together
but also some incredibly low valleys like Noah Brown
or more recently KaVontae Turpin being asked to play well beyond what their roles should be on offense
There are an endless number of reasons why one of the most common critiques of the Cowboys
specifically from inside the realm of opposing coaches and players they line up against
and play against in high leverage situations
A lack of firepower at wide receiver belongs near the top of this list though
adjacent to it is one thing the Cowboys are not only hoping to fix early on at the start of the Schottenheimer era
but perhaps the only thing that will sell the majority of the fanbase on Schottenheimer being a legitimate HC in the first place
Through all of the changes mentioned above in personnel and coaches
the Cowboys have had a major lack of creativity in their offensive play-calling and ability to scheme receivers open
They do not help quarterback Dak Prescott in the ways that other passers around the league
all of which currently make less than the Cowboys leader who became the highest paid at the position prior to week one a year ago
are lifted by play-calling that always seems to allow for easy completions and yards after the catch
The Cowboys making a basic 10 to 15 yard gain in the passing game last season
felt so incredibly laborious if not borderline miraculous
the bread and butter for other teams that reached the postseason was to rattle off these types of plays with ease by creating space for their skill players to run
For Cowboys fans still questioning what exactly Schottenheimer brings to the table
or comparing him to Jason Garrett who was often asked the same over his tenure
the best way for the new HC in Dallas to answer it is now staring America’s Team in the face
Coming out of the draft without a single pick spent on a new receiver was a major surprise
and tolerance for the predictable Jerry and Stephen Jones sell jobs that Mingo
Ryan Flournoy or Jalen Brooks can be a consistent WR2 to Lamb is understandably low
The time is unequivocally now for Dallas to uplift the talent they do have at receiver with schemes that bring them up to the more modern approaches to offense in today’s NFL
Any realistic discussion about how the Cowboys can actually get the most out of young players with untapped potential like Jalen Tolbert
or even their full-time punt/kick returner Turpin has to start with how the brain trust of Schottenheimer as play-caller and Klayton Adams as OC will help these players create separation and access to routes with their scheme
Schottenheimer’s initial glimpses into his vision for the offense
one the Cowboys front office clearly felt he wasn’t largely responsible for the collapse of while working under McCarthy as play-caller
have been nothing more than just a small step in the right direction
With the team spending it’s first three picks on OL
there is a noticeable lack of new faces or points of intrigue to really hone in on once Dallas begins offseason workouts
The time for more pressing questions about why WR wasn’t prioritized harder in the draft
and what the Cowboys are going to do about it
and will be the first real litmus test of how ready this team is to compete again until proven otherwise
The Cowboys wanting to install multiple options out of similar-looking formations to the defense and run the ball behind an offensive line built to excel out in space are all great goals to have
but so too is getting a receiver not named Lamb - who was banged up all of last season and missed the final two games - open on a regular basis
The average water cooler fan getting ready for a fantasy draft in a few months would have a hard time naming another Cowboys player that has this skill
There may even be a longshot case for fifth-round pick Jaydon Blue to already be one of the best separators in route running behind Lamb for the Cowboys
The Cowboys have both their play caller in Schottenheimer and quarterback in Prescott under contract for the next four seasons
The sense of urgency to win in this window should be heightened with Prescott coming off yet another season ending injury to start 2025
The fact that Prescott will get this “redo” of sorts to begin his new contract that carries a heavy burden of expectations with a HC also coming into the job already under fire may be a good thing
The general direction of the franchise at the time they decided to hire Schottenheimer was difficult to understand
despite being so financially committed to Prescott and needing a quick fix around him
The fear around the hire was that Schottenheimer
being an internal candidate elevated to HC
wouldn’t have enough of an influence to steer the team out of the dark waters of distractions and lack of player acquisition outside the draft to get things going in a positive direction again
it was seen as a near admittance from the Jones’ that winning football games is not of top priority in Dallas
The way they’ve collectively rolled up their sleeves to show a coherent plan for how the Cowboys under Schottenheimer want to look has been an impressive response to this criticism
but offensive play-calling and wide receiver talent are still holding the entire ship back until proven otherwise
it has become something a yearly tradition for national media members
mainly former players that break down tape
to turn on the Cowboys offense and revel at the sheer amount of curl
The team becoming painfully predictable in this way was a problem under Garrett
a problem when Kellen Moore was here calling plays
Schottenheimer was only here for part of the McCarthy tenure of course
but the familiarity in the process that led to his hiring makes it feel like he fits in even more to this past offensive lineage in a sense
For a lifelong assistant that’s been in the league on-and-off since 1997
getting his first head coaching opportunity for the ninth NFL team he’s been with
Schottenheimer of all coaches should be eager to break this mold and immediately start writing his own legacy as Cowboys head coach in 2025
This is a coach out of the shadows of pro football obscurity for the first time at 51 years old
handed the chance to move a franchise that’s been stuck in the mud for nearly his entire career forward in the one area they’ve needed the most help as of late
The Cowboys don’t even need to surpass either conference finalist from within their own division
the Commanders or reigning champion Eagles
to make progress that would be seen as a great positive in this area with Schottenheimer calling the offense
As opposed to a jumbled up mess of outside noise about what Schottenheimer is or isn’t capable of as a first time HC
the time between now and week one of the upcoming season will now be spent mainly laser-focused on one position of obvious need for the Cowboys
and what their offensive-minded coach can do about it
Having this black and white area to judge Schottenheimer by could be a good thing when it comes to other things the Cowboys are preparing more in the background
like the sorting out of a RB depth chart currently crowded with five names
the development of a young offensive line looking to reclaim their spot as one of the league’s best
or the progress Matt Eberflus can make on defense in his return to Dallas after having a seemingly heavy influence on their draft choices
The Cowboys have used every point of the offseason so far to gradually show how serious they are about being a better running team again
but the viability of the passing offense to at least keep them in the playoff picture remains a serious question following the draft

The Rangers placed Taveras on outright waivers on Sunday, three MLB officials familiar with the waiver wire and process confirmed with The Dallas Morning News
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic first posted the move on X
Confirming @Ken_Rosenthal tweet that Rangers have placed OF Leody Taveras on outright waivers
Will have a story shortly on the ramifications of it
Any team can place a claim for Taveras by simply being willing to take on the remainder of his $4.75 million salary
The Rangers had attempted to trade him last week
but found no teams willing to make a straight trade that would involve exchanging players and taking on the remainder of the contract
has $5 million in innings-pitched related performance bonuses in his contract
If nobody claims Taveras over the 48 hours starting Monday morning
the Rangers could remove him from the 40-man roster and send him outright to Triple-A Round Rock

Heading into Saturday's do-or-die game, the Dallas Stars' secret weapon appeared to be coach Peter DeBoer's 8-0 record in Game 7s
He's 9-0 now because of the Stars' not-so-secret weapon. Mikko Rantanen stunningly turned the game around in the third period, erasing a 2-0 deficit with a tremendous skating display and three goals and an assist in a 4-2 victory against the Colorado Avalanche
He had 101 points in 81 playoff games with the Avalanche
and that's what the Stars were looking for when they made the move
The Stars looked spent when they were held to 10 shots over the first two periods and Colorado's Nathan MacKinnon made it 2-0 just 31 seconds into the third period
But Rantanen darted into the offensive zone and ripped a shot past Mackenzie Blackwood at 7:49
He tied the game on a power play after zipping behind the net and putting the puck out front
He picked up an assist on Wyatt Johnston's go-ahead goal and completed the hat trick with an empty-net goal
"He was a motivated guy to make an impact in this series," DeBoer told reporters
USA TODAY Sports provided live coverage of Game 7
They will either head to Winnipeg or host St
depending on what whether the Jets or Blues win Sunday night
They went 1-3 against the Jets and 3-0 against the Blues during the regular season
they might to be able to get back injured forward Jason Robertson
Their once-promising season is over after a first-round exit
“They were missing their best D and maybe their best forward," MacKinnon told reporters
The Avalanche will continue to be a threat with the core locked in long-term and Gabriel Landeskog back after a three-season injury absence
They'll have to make some decisions on trade deadline acquisitions Brock Nelson and Ryan Lindgren
who knocked his former team out of the playoffs
said it was emotional going through the handshake line after the 4-2 win
Obviously we were enemies in the series on the ice

Stars-Avalanche score: Nathan MacKinnon doubles leadNathan MacKinnon jumps off the bench on a delayed penalty to Jamie Benn and repeats the move he made in the first period
End of second period: Avalanche 1, Stars 0Defenseman Josh Manson had one goal in the regular season and five in the playoffs heading into this postseason
But he jumped up in the play for a shorthanded goal that gave Colorado the lead
Penalty killer Logan O'Connor pulls up and feeds a breaking Josh Manson for a shorthanded goal
That's two goals in two games for the low-scoring defenseman
Then Colorado kills off the rest of the penalty

Game 7 of the Avalanche-Star series is scheduled to start at 8 p.m
Colorado's Mackenzie Blackwood is in his first playoffs so this is his first Game 7
Dallas' Jake Oettinger is 2-1 with a 1.54 goals-against average and .956 save percentage
Jason Robertson, Miro Heiskanen injury updateStars forward Jason Robertson and defenseman Miro Heiskanen haven't played all series and have been ruled out in Game 7
Heiskanen has been out since before the 4 Nations Face-Off and had knee surgery
Robertson was hurt in the regular-season finale and is day-to-day with a lower-body injury
Stars 2: Colorado has created more of the chances throughout the series
Expect a close one that sees Cale Makar dominate
with the Avs finally sealing the series with a late empty-netter
Stars 3: DeBoer can't stay perfect forever
I had the Avalanche winning the Stanley Cup and I have faith they can pull this one off against a Stars team still missing Jason Robertson and Miro Heiskanen
Just make sure you don't give up a goal in the first nine seconds this time
Stars 3: I picked Avalanche in seven before the series and I'm sticking with it
holding a 22-17 advantage in goals and a 214-167(!) edge in shots

exerting energy in all areas and making subtle changes to how things operate
he made sure they all greeted each other along with the coaches
Schottenheimer also talked to every player individually and had dinner with some of them
“I think I’ve always been someone that believes in connections
getting to know these guys,” Schottenheimer said
“I’ve always been someone who’s been able to be demanding and I’m pretty good at disciplining guys
when I got this opportunity that I wouldn’t change
because I think I’ve seen too many people change.”
“The guys I’ve seen change — I’m not going to name them — they weren’t very successful
and I plan on being really successful,” he said
“The reason I think I’ll do that is because of my values and my beliefs and how hard I work
but also because I’m going to be me and I’m not going to change that for anything.”
What also doesn’t change is the time honored tradition of players not having a star on their helmet until they earn it
Undrafted rookie tight end Tyler Neville didn’t know when he’ll get a star placed on his silver helmet
Here’s a secret: The preseason opener in August
While Schottenheimer won’t change the type of person he is
some aspects of how the Cowboys interact has
“There’s also other things we‘re doing in there where guys are competing every day
and different things that we‘ve kind of put in there
but just they can challenge each other in a good way.”
The Cowboys also started contract talks sooner with draft picks as seven of the nine players are secured with four-year deals, which includes first-round pick, guard Tyler Booker
Schottenheimer said it gives players a peace of mind to have contracts concluded before even getting to the organized team activities
Instead of installing the offensive and defensive playbooks
While the players will get their playbooks
reviews about what they’ve gathered is stressed over the installation
The other thing that’s changed is when Schottenheimer started the offseason program
The rookie head coach started a week later than he could have under the rules
“I wasn’t going to do the [extra] minicamp,” he said
“You’d have to start the first week to do the minicamp
It’s like you get to run around a little bit
And I wanted the extra week to just kind of get these guys more time to get away and then when they got back it was time to get to work.”
The bottom line is winning regardless of the changes and that’s a place where Schottenheimer will be judged more than anything else
in a business like ours where I’m going to be judged
we‘re going to be judged on wins and losses
and that’s part of the deal,” Schottenheimer said
I’d not be doing my job if I didn’t make sure that both young and old player alike weren’t investing in one another.”

An institution in Dallas' Knox Street neighborhood has been uprooted: Chuy's
the Tex-Mex restaurant that had been open at 4544 McKinney Ave
The relocation is due to the fact that the old space at the corner of Knox and McKinney will be razed — part of a mixed-use development on Knox Street that's expected to open in 2026 and include a hotel
Rumors about the likely closure of that Chuy's location had circulated for nearly a year
A spokesperson said "It’s been an honor to be part of the Dallas community for more than 30 years and serve guests at our restaurant in the Knox-Henderson district
bigger restaurant just two miles away and to keep offering our guests everything they love about Chuy’s."
Founded in Austin by Mike Young and John Zapp in 1982
Chuy’s became known for its Tex-Mex cuisine and eclectic decor
Signature dishes include Big As Yo Face Burritos
The McKinney Avenue location was also known for its Hatch chile program that included not only featuring Hatch chiles in various seasonal specials
but also positioning a chile roaster outside the restaurant right on McKinney Avenue — very much Old Knox as opposed to the glossy high-rise direction in which Knox is currently headed
In July 2024, Chuy's was acquired by Darden Restaurants
the hospitality company that owns other big-name chains
such as Olive Garden and The Capital Grille
outfitting the new location wiith its iconic eclectic theming
ceilings filled with hand-carved wooden fish
and the Elvis fountain – which has just been refurbished
The new location is operated by the same team
and they've also expanded total staff to accommodate the space
"We relocated to Greenville Avenue because it was a great area with long-term growth potential and wasn’t too far from where we served our guests for more than 30 years," their spokesperson says

place it in the perspective it deserves and I feel — sort of like Colorado — I keep coming up short
Duane Thomas carrying the Cowboys to their first Super Bowl
I was there in Yankee Stadium when the defending world champs frankly gave up on pitching to Hamilton in 2010
Josh had just captured the AL MVP award for Texas
getting the Rangers to their first World Series
after swatting four home runs in six games against the Yanks
He would have hit more but New York intentionally walked him five times
Only reason he settled for just 35 points was he sat the entire fourth quarter of a blowout
I wasn’t covering the Cowboys in 1970 but I was watching when Next Year’s Champions finally reached the Super Bowl
Duane Thomas ran for 135 yards against Detroit in the first NFC wild card game
then rambled for 143 more at San Francisco in the NFC championship
As great as Tony Dorsett and Emmitt Smith were in playoff games to follow
they never approached 278 yards rushing in consecutive playoff games
And they never got to a Super Bowl with Craig Morton at quarterback
Why does Rantanen belong in this conversation
Because the Dallas Stars were finished without him
And they just might be bound for the Cup Final with him
As head coach Pete DeBoer said late Saturday night
Rantanen took over the last three games of the series
Five goals and six assists for 11 points in three games
Wayne Gretzky should have been here handing Mikko some kind of prize
Needed to be four seconds faster to set a new mark
Rantanen didn’t just achieve a hat trick which would have been a hell of a Game 7 storyline on its own
He didn’t just do it in the last 13 minutes
He did it in the last 13 minutes when the Stars had gone scoreless for 47
Dallas wasn’t even generating decent scoring chances
I might have been 600 words into my postmortem Stars-overmatched-without-Miro-and-Robo column when Mikko called for a rewrite and began to plunder the Colorado defense
You could not have scripted a better ending for Stars GM Jim Nill or a worse one for the Colorado management group that decided it couldn’t pay to keep Rantanen and shipped him to Carolina in January
“It was a difficult year personally,” Rantanen said late Saturday
I love every one of those (Colorado players)
The Stars have other worlds to conquer and already know that if they win the next round
they will face one of the teams that eliminated them in the Western Conference finals (Vegas or Edmonton) once more
With Miro Heiskanen and Jason Robertson set to return soon

They may not have to do the same in Round 2
“I believe you’re going to see them both play in the second round,” DeBoer said after the Stars’ 4-2 Game 7 win Saturday night
“I don’t know if it’s going to be Game 1 or Game 3 or Game 5.”
has skated with the Stars during the postseason but hasn’t been cleared to play
Robertson sustained a knee injury in the regular season finale and was initially declared week-to-week
while the Stars traveled to and from Colorado
Heiskanan had 25 points in 50 games this regular season
Robertson finished with 35 goals and 45 assists
“Hopefully we can get them back as soon as possible,” center Wyatt Johnston said
“Even though we can help try to fill those holes
they’re two amazing players and we want them in the lineup.”
