DAPHNE, Ala. (WPMI) — Two young men are in critical condition after they were shot in a minivan parked at a Daphne apartment complex. Daphne Police identified the victims as 18-year-old Matthew Barnes and 20-year-old Demond Walker Police say Walker lived at 10x Audubon Park on County Road 64 where the shooting happened Tuesday night around 7:40 "They'd both been shot in the head and in the neck and they were unconscious," Captain Reginald Ardis One 10X Audubon Park resident who asked only to be identified by her first name says she saw the two shooting victims and two other young men outside her apartment minutes before the shooting took place She didn't recognize them and said they stared at her as she walked past them is when the gunshots happened," said Georgia She says one victim was sitting in the driver's seat and the other victim was behind him in the back seat Georgia described the other two who ran away from the van after the shooting as "very young." One of them put a gun in his backpack leaving the scene Another witness described the gun as a pistol caliber carbine that looks similar to an assault rifle and says she’d seen them walking around the complex previously Georgia says she called 911 and stayed with the victims until paramedics arrived We believe it's got to be drug-related," said Georgia NBC 15 News observed what appeared to be marijuana in a bag in the back seat of the minivan with an evidence marker next to it "We're not ready to say that that was a motive There was a drug component to this," said Ardis Ardis says the victims knew the shooter and declined to say if there was more than one shooter This is not the first violent act to happen at 10X Audubon complex Daphne Police say Kayden Gurley shot and killed J "It's definitely something to investigate whether or not there is there is an increasing trend of violence there," said Ardis Daphne Police encourages anyone with information about the double shooting Tuesday night to contact their investigators at (251) 620-0151 Daphne Wright: Deep-Rooted Things is the latest in the Ashmolean NOW series of exhibitions of new works by contemporary artists that relate to the Museum’s historic collections This exhibition by Irish artist Daphne Wright (b 1963) created in partnership with Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin features several new sculptures including the major new work 'Sons and Couch' in which she returns to the subject of her children that she last portrayed on the cusp of adolescence in 2014 It is presented alongside 'Fridge Still Life' (2021) and other recent works which are placed in dialogue with works from the Ashmolean’s collection Wright’s sculptures meditate on passing time The work continues a series that started in her work 'Sons' (2011) the earliest of the sculptures of her children when they were on the brink of adolescence and continued in the subsequent 'Kitchen Table' (2014) In 'Sons and Couch' the centre of domestic life has moved from the kitchen table to the living room couch where the bodies have grown and are once again on the brink – a moment of latency anxiety and possibility captured and rendered solid Wright was drawn to the plaster casts in the Museum’s Cast Gallery where the sculptures frequently take the young adult male as their subject representing ancient and pervasive ideals of masculine beauty as epitomised by athletes The show opens with a cast of the surviving fragments of a metope from the Temple of Zeus in Olympia from the Ashmolean’s collection showing a young beardless Hercules defeating the Nemean Lion in the first of his Labours just starting out on his violently heroic journey through adulthood Wright also places one of the few paintings by a woman artist in the Ashmolean in the gallery space alongside her own works Rachel Ruysch’s ‘Forest Floor’ Still Life of Flowers features a seasonally impossible combination of poppies all captured on the cusp of dropping their first petals with a butterfly – another emblem of life’s fleeting nature – alighting momentarily on a bloom An even more evidently deliquescent bunch of flowers sits on top of Wright’s 'Fridge Still Life' (2021) a recent work shown here for the first time In contrast to the hard and robust jesmonite of Wright’s casts this is one of the latest in a group of works made by the artist in unfired clay a material with which she has been working for the last 15 years Fridges are intended to slow down the effects of time but they are also strangely intimate and revealing personal spaces Here Wright invites the viewer to consider what is revealed by the oven-ready chicken drinks bottle and five asparagus spears that sit forlornly in the fridge’s interior in the exhibition speak directly to both the domestic and the museum and in doing so continue the exploration of time The way in which domestic objects carry memories and meaning is central to Wright’s series 'Plates' made by pressing clay between two plates A different response to the museum is suggested by the group of wall-hung sculptures of animals taken from collectible posters that once came free with the Guardian newspaper and hung on the bedroom walls of Wright’s children The urge or need to collect and to categorise is as much the preserve of the child as it is the museum curator and Wright’s carefully arranged 'Pet Amphibians and Reptiles' and 'Pet Rodents and Rabbits' squirm off the page in their low relief three dimensionality as if trying to escape such categorisation while also realising the familiar childhood fantasy of the image come to life The last work in the exhibition pulls together many of its recurring themes The mysteriously named 'Ugg' (2019) presents 18 strange amorphous objects on three shelves These might be a museum display of ancient artefacts and vessels models of internal organs or the maquettes of a modernist sculptor they are based on a collection of small plastic figures – Moshi Monsters – collected by the artist’s son when they were the current playground craze only to be discarded when a new trend came along The strange lumpen presences of 'Ugg' sit on their shelves suggesting some lost forgotten and only partially understood world said: ‘The exhibition title 'Deep-Rooted Things' most obviously suggests the importance of history inheritance and memory in the forging of identity vulnerability and mutability of those identities are indeed among the preoccupations of the works in the show which centres on a major new sculpture of her two young-adult children We are thrilled to be working together with Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin on this showing of Daphne’s work and look forward to seeing the different resonances that her works will have within our two very different institutions.’ Daphne Wright said: ‘I visited the Ashmolean often with the children when they were young and we had many discussions about objects and artworks in the collection The opportunity to exhibit in the Museum and to reflect upon how one’s children and young men in general are shaped and reflected by ancient and contemporary culture is amazing.’ said: 'We are delighted to work with the Ashmolean Museum on this exhibition by Daphne Wright She delves unflinchingly into issues of parenthood Daphne peels away at facade and image to reveal the complexities and emotions beneath the surface.' Plan your visit The more than 130-acre estate located in a small town just outside the French capital was purchased in 1981 There was a mountain of debt owed including a million in taxes to the French government Reckert and Figueira put their life savings into keeping the Chateau de Lesigny The place they’ve also called Beau Château has served as a venue for weddings and more than 50 French productions They’ll use every bit of their renovation and design backgrounds to transform more than 20 rooms which is easier said than done when looking to keep within budget in spite of a number of issues including bug infestations and structural obstacles Reckert and Figueira first look to transform the bell tower space into a luxury bedroom suite (solar room) seeing their vision realized means overcoming obstacles like potentially costly rotted roof beams and a windstorm Here the high school sweethearts open up about their relationship Daphne and Ian are renovating the kitchen pantry in the Hunter’s Lodge on Chateau de Lesigny (HGTV) Did you take any tips or find any inspiration from Escape to the Chateau as you were jumping into this Daphne Reckert: No, we found out about (Dick and Angel Strawbridge) later Ian Figueira: We became familiar with their show and actually like a lot of what they’ve done I feel like their approach to renovation and design is not bound or restricted by any ideas Daphne: We haven’t had a lot of time for TV or movies How was it having HGTV document your renovation journey I know you’ve been doing something like this through your YouTube channel you meet the crew and eventually it’s like you’re living with the crew It’s actually been very nice because they’ve all been super supportive and nice There have been times that were really scary and stressful Everybody that was here showed up each day and rolled with the punches It was significantly different from YouTube where I just have my one camera on a tripod Daphne: And it’s just the two of us making the decisions You have a great dynamic and seem to have a great relationship but how is it managing those difficult times I feel like we almost had to compartmentalize stress because we had different things happening every single day we just wanted to get some food and go to sleep We needed to be on the same page about what was coming next Daphne: And remember we are on the same team Ian: And that each of our problems is shared Daphne: It’s almost like the problems are so big at the chateau that we don’t have time to have problems with us if the biggest problem of the day is that I ate the last bit of ice cream Is there anything you do to escape the chaos of these projects We go to the village to have an ice cream or go to the market Ian: Before we really entrenched ourselves with these renovations we’d go to Paris more often because we’re really close but once we really kicked up the renovations Daphne: Sometimes what helps it’s good to just go back to California you have to actually deal with trespassers Ian: The thing is the chateau property is about 130 acres total There are boundaries and fences that cover the whole property but once you go past the lakes behind the chateau People have found ways or breaks through the fence so they can come in and walk around they are just high school kids and we’ll catch them and tell them to leave but every once in a while we’ll find they are broken again so there is not a lot for us to do other than build and rebuild the fences Ian: Although when we catch high schoolers it’s funny because Daphne will then ask for their mother’s phone numbers to let them know they are there What kind of challenges do you face this season Daphne: One of the biggest challenges is just how big everything is and this room is the size of an apartment or even a small house What can you say about the transformations we’re about to see Daphne: I think we’ve surprised ourselves with how wonderful these turned out to be Ian: We started these projects with a very clear idea I used to work on houses that I used to consider old if they were from the 1950s and 1960s It’s like they don’t even have electricity and insulation The approach to the renovation is a whole different ball game because you’re not just considering how you want the layout to be It’s how do we correct the layout and bring in accommodations like electricity or heat How has business been since the show announcement Are you getting more inquiries for it as a wedding venue I managed to triple the amount of weddings we were booking per year You mention in the show the potential of buried treasure on the grounds Ian: What’s fun about this is I actually didn’t understand there being a real mythology of the treasure until Daphne explained the history of the place there was someone in close ties to this family Ones married to the treasurers of France at the time Daphne: Multiple treasurers of France have owned the chateau Ian: This couple specifically was where the husband was shot or stabbed in Paris and the wife… She did something with that between those days Some people actually believe so much that when Daphne’s grandfather was still alive they would call him and be very convinced they knew exactly where the treasure was They would try to see if he would be willing to split the treasure 50/50 if they paid for the tractors to come and open up that piece of land He always said no because he didn’t want random people digging around his property Ian: We’ve definitely been watching a lot more HGTV There have been a few shows that we learned of after the fact Ian: It’s a great place for inspiration for designs I feel like all the different shows on HGTV have an educational factor when it comes to renovation or garden Do you think life will change for you much after the show premieres Ian: The truth is in France I don’t think they care so I don’t think it will change our day-to-day Daphne has seen a few famous actors in Paris before and nobody gave them a second look when they walked through Ian: We’ll see if people recognize us more now Sign Up DAPHNE, Ala. (WPMI) — Tuesday night, Baldwin County deputies and Daphne police converged on a crime scene outside an apartment complex in Daphne, just off Highway 64. Witnesses tell NBC 15 News two people we shot just after nine at Arlington Apartments, formerly named 10 X Audubon Park. They say at least one of them was taken away by an ambulance. NBC 15 News noted nearly a dozen yellow evidence markers in the area being investigated. Detectives seemed to be focusing their attention on a dark colored van with an open door. A picture obtained by NBC 15 News shows one evidence marker positioned next to what appears to be a plastic baggie filled with a green plant material. Police released this information Wednesday morning: our showsAn Ode to My Favorite ‘Bridgerton’ Couple: Daphne and Simon AuthorRebecca SnowAuthorRebecca SnowPublishedFebruary 14, 2025TopicbridgertonReading Time5 MINSShareIn December 2020 I often found myself in my childhood bedroom taking a break to make eggs for lunch (my specialty in the kitchen) Then I’d hunch over some more until — poof A massive part of me felt so grateful and lucky to have this wonderful home with lovely parents to retreat to during an uncertain time That was until I found myself transported far away from my bedroom and the sad eggs and into the world of a little show called Bridgerton bridgertonAn Ode to My Favorite ‘Bridgerton’ Couple: The FinchesIt’s been a long four years since the first season of Shondaland’s hit series graced Netflix so let me set that early stage for you: In the very first moments of the show your ears are greeted by the glorious voice of Julie Andrews as gossip columnist Lady Whistledown as we pan to Grosvenor Square in 1813 where our eyes feast on the beautiful British high-society enclave We meet the Featheringtons and the Bridgertons after being presented to the queen and her court have a less than ideal introduction to the queen — but it doesn’t matter “simply too seated,” enraptured by the Regency world that has been laid out before us And all this is in the first few minutes of the show All before we are truly engrossed by the heart of Bridgerton’s first season: the love story that will unfold between the Diamond of the Season who has come to shake up high-society London with his power all this immediately pulled me right out of my stupor I watched, along with 82 other million households as Daphne and Simon endured a horrible first meeting at Lady Danbury’s ball then set the limits of their “fake relationship” in order to survive a season of suitors and salacious ladies while their chemistry continued to build and build Daphne’s unprompted dreams of the Duke of Hastings But just beneath the glitz and glamour of Regency-era London the women of the ton and those outside of it are fighting for their own autonomy and agency in marriages that are essentially thrust upon them The series is a master class of excellent writing and directing and we watch as Daphne strives to protect herself in a world that’s dictated by her eldest brother who sees it as his responsibility to see Daphne perfectly matched that all comes crashing down when both Anthony and the Mean Girl of the ton witness a passionate (premarital) kiss between the duke and Daphne Cressida wants to expose Daphne; Anthony wants to defend Daphne’s honor by challenging Simon to a duel rather than buckle under the pressure of the near-scandal decides to take matters into her own hands arriving at the duel and committing to marrying Simon even if they both believe the other does not love them and Daphne must make this choice in order to not only protect herself but also her sisters and their family name our paramours not only realize they do in fact love each other but Simon also guides Daphne through her first intimate experience — and then her second How refreshing was it to see a woman in the uptight constrained world of Regency London actually enjoy sex and Daphne and Simon soon reach a monumental one when Daphne discovers that it’s not that the duke cannot conceive children — it’s that he won’t because of a vow Simon made to his terrible father that he would never extend their family name she ensures she’ll get the child she thinks she has the right to Anyone familiar with the scene will know it’s messy and complicated and upsetting and it leaves both characters feeling entirely alone in the aftermath But it’s also another layer of this wildly tangled romance that even as we watch it melt into a puddle of quiet resentment and rage makes this a compelling story that’s hard to peel ourselves away from And just when we think we’re about to watch the duke and duchess live separate lives in separate manors have politely agreed to have a couple of dances and then they’d go their separate ways While it may seem like a serious obstacle to the event in fact the glorious downpour brings with it healing powers you can literally see the moment when all the anger and shame and sadness are washed away and with it the duke’s seemingly impenetrable walls he has someone in his corner who will not let him go without a fight has proved she wants him not because he is a duke or is extremely handsome These two OGs pulled me out of the numbing doom that was 2020 (and also 2024 as I rewatched the first season for this very ode) I had the chance to really see how the DNA expanded into every crevice of every Bridgerton romance Daphne and Simon set the stage and the tone for everything that’s come after — how lucky are we for that Rebecca Snow is an assistant editor at Shondaland.com bridgertonCatching Up With ‘Bridgerton’ Director Andrew Ahn on His New Rom-ComAhn has reimagined Ang Lee’s classic film “The Wedding Banquet,” maintaining the original film’s delightful core bridgertonThe Star Files: What Your Favorite ‘Bridgerton’ Stars Are Doing Right NowWhat have our beloved “Bridgerton” stars been up to when not working on bringing us the upcoming season bridgertonWhy Are People So Obsessed With Sophie Baek? In 2021, it became the first organization from Malta to join GIJN Resources are allocated depending on what fires the foundation is fighting at any given time as the foundation was lobbying the EU to introduce a directive to protect journalists from vexatious lawsuits a workload that first took up to 20% of the foundation’s time surged to take up 90% when negotiations reached their peak The EU directive, known informally as Daphne’s Law and sets minimum standards in all of the EU’s 27 member states for the legal protection of journalists While that success has both domestic and international implications the organization has also been working for change on the island of Malta itself One of the most important moments was getting the government to set up a public inquiry into Daphne’s assassination Caruana Galizia describes the inquiry — which concluded in 2021 — as “groundbreaking,” since Maltese citizens were seeing people whom they previously thought to be untouchable being held to account in public The inquiry found that the Maltese state was responsible for creating the culture of impunity that led to Daphne’s assassination Malta’s current Prime Minister Robert Abela apologized to the journalist’s family on behalf of the state but so far has failed to implement the inquiry’s recommendations Having become the de facto experts on public inquiries in Malta in 2022 the foundation was approached by one grieving mother seeking justice for her son That year, six workers became trapped when a building under construction collapsed the lifeless body of 20-year-old Jean Paul Sofia was pulled out from under the rubble called for a public inquiry into the case so that necessary reforms in Malta’s construction sector would take place “I remember sending a message to Matthew [Caruana Galizia] and he answered me immediately saying they were willing to help,” Bonnici says recalling how she first approached the foundation I wouldn’t have managed to get anything done without them.” Although Prime Minister Abela had initially opposed the inquiry, he relented in the face of a massive protest outside his office. Upon its conclusion, the inquiry found that the Maltese state was, yet again, responsible for the death of one of its own citizens “More than six years after it failed to prevent Daphne Caruana Galizia’s assassination, the Maltese state has again been found responsible for a death that could have been prevented,” the foundation stated at the time It could be said that the campaign for justice for Daphne’s murder has snowballed into a broader campaign for accountability. This year, the country sank to its lowest-ever position on Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index the foundation’s doors will remain open to those who feel powerless The small team behind the foundation has been contributing to the local media landscape by offering free legal advice to journalists and by sharing documents with other newsrooms Their next milestone is to launch their own media outlet “One of the foundation’s key objectives is developing investigative journalism in Malta and I can’t think of a better way to do that than developing this publishing arm that is an editorial operation in its own right,” Caruana Galizia explains Amphora Media launched in February 2025 as a website publishing investigative reporting in English and Maltese Its team of four will be headed by Julian Bonnici as managing editor Bonnici had left Malta feeling frustrated that the local media landscape’s fast pace only allowed for “surface level journalism.” He spent the last two years working in Brussels as a communications officer for a think tank Matthew Caruana Galizia speaks at the European Democracy Conference in 2022 “I used to get frustrated that there was never the time or the support to really dig deeper into the big stories that are around Malta,” Bonnici says Pitching Amphora media’s exclusive focus on investigative journalism with a rigid fact-checking process Caruana Galizia managed to entice Bonnici back While a large focus of Amphora Media will be on the happenings on the 17-mile-long island Caruana Galizia wants the outlet to pursue international investigations — something he’s no stranger to having been part of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) but he’s keen to combat any perception that investigative reporters from countries like his aren’t able to hold their own with the biggest international players a journalist from the US or the UK or a big country and a lot of your work is in English then the media organization that you set up is going to play at an international level by default,” Caruana Galizia says or maybe a country where English isn’t the first language even if you do set up your own strong media organization Their main focus areas will be public interest stories They have not ruled out building on investigations that Daphne had started work on because every euro in Daphne’s bank account at the time of her death served as the foundation’s seed money she was in her early fifties when she was killed And didn’t expect to die at that point,” Caruana Galizia adds “Because we were so new to the field we lost some but we won others,” he explains the first four years were the hardest because of the limited resources He converted the ground floor of his house into an office and constantly had people coming and out Simultaneously the family had to keep up with the public inquiry into Daphne’s murder and the criminal cases But like media organizations around the world, it faces a complex panorama. Malta still only ranks 73rd out of 180 countries on the Reporters Without Borders Press Freedom Index which notes that journalists “considered ‘hostile’ are sidelined and targeted for attacks.” The latest RSF report notes how Daphne’s family has even been subjected to posthumous defamation suits and how Maltese society “suffers from deep polarization.” That’s a topic that Caruana Galizia has grappled with “Even among the people that we are helping with the fight against corruption there are many who don’t realize that we’re helping them,” he points out that we are enemies of their favorite political party.” Dr. Robert Aquilina is the Maltese representative of Italy’s Fondazione Falcone, which has a stated goal of creating “a culture in which what happened to Daphne can never and will never happen again.” He believes the Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation can contribute to public discourse from a point of view that others can’t: The family’s great personal loss has given the project high levels of credibility in Malta and abroad “No one can accuse them of trying to advance some political force or another they want to advance the journalistic profession,” Aquilina said In the aftermath of Daphne’s assassination skepticism about the country’s future was rife many people channeled their anger into something constructive opening new organizations or strengthening existing ones “I wouldn’t say that the work itself brings closure,” says Caruana Galizia “It is justice itself which brings closure But the work of the foundation in that regard is the means to that end.” Christoph Schwaiger is a journalist primarily focusing on science His stories have appeared in New Scientist and he has been interviewed as a guest on LBC and Times Radio He has a BSc from the University of Malta and an MA from the University of Groningen Ján Kuciak was building a name for himself with his investigations on corruption when he was shot dead alongside his fiancée — the first targeted killing of a journalist in Slovakia’s modern history A collective of reporters worked together to publish his final story and then set up an investigative journalism center in his name The nonprofit newsroom — whose founders and senior leadership are all women — has taken a innovative youth-focused approach to covering corruption Cryptocurrencies have taken the financial world by storm Despite an industry raked by volatility and billion-dollar scandals they have gained popularity not only among investors and anarchists but also organized crime figures and cyber thieves looking to avoid the traditional financial system Experts insist there are ways to investigate […] GIJN offers a snapshot of how watchdog reporters are confronting algorithmic abuses and misinformation while also employing AI as a key newsroom tool By Hal ScheurichPublished: Feb. 11, 2025 at 10:45 AM CSTEmail This LinkShare on FacebookShare on X (formerly Twitter)Share on PinterestShare on LinkedInDAPHNE, Ala. WATCHAmphitheater project on the bay in Daphne set to begin construction this summerby Robert Noonan (WPMI) — The long-anticipated amphitheater on Mobile Bay in Daphne is moving closer to fruition with plans to put the project out to bid within the next three months Construction is expected to commence this summer on the site of the old Bayfront Building on Bayfront Park Drive It's going to be a 2,400-person relax-in-a-lawn-chair amphitheater on the water with a full stage," said Mayor Robin LeJeune "The whole array so right on the water How can you beat a sunset down on the bay?" LeJeune anticipates the project will cost approximately $10 million and aims for the amphitheater to open in the spring of 2027 Zende knew about Daphne’s plan to seduce Carter on The Bold and the Beautiful and we haven’t stopped thinking about it Zende (Delon De Metz) assumed that Daphne (Murielle Hilaire) was a ruse in Steffy’s (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) plan The goal was for Daphne to end “Cope.” But she fell for him Daphne declared that she’s never met a man like Carter (Lawrence Saint-Victor) She’s not even the type to fall head over heels for someone she couldn’t help herself whenever she was around Carter Zende walked into an intimate moment between Carter and Daphne Zende didn’t realize that their relationship was serious He just assumed that Daphne was using Carter to help the Forresters NEXT: Here’s why Zende and Daphne are perfect for each other. We couldn’t help but notice Zende’s reaction Zende probably assumed they were all good friends He was probably disappointed to learn about her feelings for Carter Zende also probably thought he had a chance. He seems to enjoy their conversations. However, his head didn’t turn when he first met Daphne. Maybe he’s trying to keep his feelings to himself rather than wear them on his sleeve. Zende might believe he would be the better man for her. We would like to see this love triangle play out on the soap.
